Speaker 8 (03:46):
Ben?
Speaker 7 (03:47):
Obviously, like I said, I don't get too much time
to talk. Like we talked about on Friday, if it's
you're gonna talk about the quarterbacks. If it's close, I
kind of have to agree with Jaren Jordan. We talked
about it on Friday. I think bear Bachmeyer deserves to start,
AD proved it. McKay Hills sets to get the start.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Yeah, So if it's too close to Kyle, you're leaning
four star transfer from Stanford bear Bachmeyer. A lot of
Bear fans out there in Provo.
Speaker 7 (04:12):
I think so as well. Listen. I talked about it
earlier today on the Bryson Banuccie Show. Listen. This year
is a mulligan type season. It's a season where you know,
you know, the expectation was eleven twelve wins BYU fans
know they're gonna get anywhere between seven and nine wins.
If you have that type of season, why not throw
Bart Bachmeyer out there. You know he's the future quarterback
(04:33):
until Lions comes back into the program. McKay Hillstead is
a great quarterback, but he's not your true future quarterback,
and nor is Tracon Borgay. Barrett Bachmeyer is the future
quarterback until Ryder Lions comes back. You might as well
throw him out there. See what you have and build
upon that for season after season until Ryder is ready.
Like I said, I love McKay, but McKay is not
the guy who's gonna stick around for four seasons. Bear
(04:55):
will stick around for four seasons. You might as well
throw him out there and see if he can survive
in the big We'll.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
See how it plays out. We'll give you some some
nuggets coming out of provo here momentarily after the scrimmage.

O one, four hundred zero eight eight five. Complete Circuit Electric,
Complete Circuit Electric Utah dot Com. Let's get into a
Kalini Shataki, head coach of BYU Cougar Football. After the
scrimmage on Saturday.
Speaker 11 (07:30):
Yeah, good scrimmage, A lot of great live work. Had
over one hundred plays of live stuff. Got some special
teams stuff in there too. I really feel good about
the work that we got in. Obviously had to watch
the film, but it's exactly what I wanted to see.
I think there's some administrative penalties that I want to fix,
(07:52):
but it's good day one stuff. Honestly, we didn't have
any issues with the clock as far as getting the
call in things like that, but we did have some
uh you know, pre snap penalties. I think about five
of them, so we have to get those fixed. And
then overall, I had a couple of defensive penalties that
extended drives. But you know, I think defense, uh, usually
(08:16):
in the first scrimmage, that's how it works. Defense got
the better of the day for our team. Just concerned
because for team to get a lot of interceptions, we
didn't do that this this scrimmage.
Speaker 4 (08:28):
So good thing that the offense took care of the football.
Speaker 11 (08:31):
But I don't know if if if we would have
had taken more chance of taking more risks, maybe we
would have we would have put ourselves in better position.
So it's one of those teas you have to watch
on film. But offense to care of the football. Defense
didn't getting turnovers, But I think overall defense was able
to pretty much come out ahead. Usually happens in scrimmage
number one with the defenses further ahead and had a
(08:54):
lot of guys flying around. But I just liked that
we were able to tackle play live ball, getting the
state and just have the guys under just understand the
game and get the feel for it.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
And so it was. It was a good day, productive day.
Speaker 11 (09:08):
Watch the film, we'll learn from it and looking forward
to next time we go live again. Get some situational
football game game type situations and and but our guys
in a little bit of pressure. I thought defensively, they
put a lot of pressure on our on our offense
today and uh, we'll be better because of it.
Speaker 4 (09:25):
So what questions do you guys have for me?
Speaker 1 (09:28):
All right, let's start with Jake Hatch.
Speaker 12 (09:30):
Go ahead, Jake, Yeah, Klawnie just wanted to ask you,
based off of this scrimmage, are you planning on parademic
quarterback battle?
Speaker 4 (09:37):
Oh? Possibly.
Speaker 11 (09:38):
I think we would talk about it as a staff
and see I talked to a Rod and the offensive staff,
and uh, we'll see what we decide after today. It's
hard to make that decision now. Want to look at
the film and want to see, you know, certain reason
if they if they made the right decisions. I think
you guys heard me talk about that before.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
Is a just.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
Decision making is what we want to see.
Speaker 11 (09:59):
So we were able to get a lot of really
cool moments where it's hard on the quarterback to make
the decisions see if they made the right one. And
then sometimes the defense just makes the plays. And I
have a feeling of defense just just I mean a
lot of the guys were leading. I mean, we had
we had a bunch of guys in there started realizing
that there's a great leadership on this team on the
(10:19):
defensive side, offensive side.
Speaker 4 (10:21):
It's just everything's got to click.
Speaker 11 (10:23):
If one guy makes a mistake, it could it could
ruin the play, you know, so defensively, one guy can
make a mistake and sometimes people don't.
Speaker 4 (10:31):
Know about it.
Speaker 11 (10:31):
So that's how it works. But we well, it was
just a really good day one quarterback wise. We'll see
how it goes on Monday. We'll let you guys know,
all right, Jake, if you have a follow up? No
one else has asked yet for another question, so I.
Speaker 8 (10:48):
Got another one.
Speaker 12 (10:49):
Kwan, you talked about your defense. You feel like they
may have won the day. Do you feel like this
defense is ahead of where it was at this time
last year and do you think it can be as elite,
if not better than it was the season ago.
Speaker 4 (11:00):
Well, they better be ahead.
Speaker 11 (11:01):
I mean, there's a bunch of guys that have played
on this defense that understand a lot more. I mean,
it's it's even the the operational part. It's them knowing
and getting a good feel from the play caller in
j Hill. So I think having that that that connection.
Obviously going to year three for for Jay and and
(11:21):
his defensive staff, you know, you could tell that it's
they're a lot more comfortable with with the scheme, with
the coaching, with the expectations, and there's a I mean,
the communication is there so and but they have guys
that have joined us. That's the key, having the new
guys in in the program, and it seem like they
just gelled really quickly. It's a huge compliment to Jay
(11:43):
and to their position coaches. But usually it's easier to
get the defensive defensive side going first, but offense you
will usually respond, it's good to get this going because
an OFFENSI will respond next week.
Speaker 13 (11:55):
All right, we'll go next to Sean Walk with KSL
dot com and then Casey on Quist with SI dot Com.
Speaker 6 (12:03):
Yeah, that kind of devetails coach into sort of what
I don't want to bring up on the defense, because
you mentioned there were a number of interceptions that the
defense came down with today.
Speaker 5 (12:13):
I think it was raphically your words, where do.
Speaker 4 (12:16):
You kind of exceptions? There's none? Yeah, that's the lack
of interceptions.
Speaker 10 (12:21):
So lack of interceptions.
Speaker 6 (12:23):
Yeah, where do where do you kind of where do
you kind of draw the line as you start getting
into I guess sort of this this more live part
of camp, between the defense getting better and doing their
thing and all that, while also still bringing the offense along.
And I mean, obviously you want to avoid injuries and everything,
(12:43):
but are you are you getting to that point of
more and more live?
Speaker 5 (12:48):
I guess I.
Speaker 11 (12:50):
Think it all depends on I'd like to keep a
flexible schedule and lean on the ability to go live.
If we're not seeing enough of the competition. It's hard
to compete for a position if you're doing skelly, and
if you're not really tackling to the ground, it's hard
when you're you're just gonna assume that they're going to
make tackles when they're in the in the area.
Speaker 4 (13:12):
I don't like that. I like to know for sure.
So if you know, it doesn't mean that everybody needs
to go live. But there's nothing.
Speaker 11 (13:19):
Wrong with with even the starters getting getting some tackles
in there or getting tackled or breaking tackles.
Speaker 14 (13:25):
Uh.
Speaker 11 (13:26):
We we we already did that a couple of times
this week, and you know next week.
Speaker 4 (13:31):
I know we can do that if we need to.
Speaker 11 (13:33):
It's just it's just a matter of if the competition
calls for it.
Speaker 4 (13:37):
You know.
Speaker 11 (13:37):
That's but there's some some guys that just we already
know that they can do it. But it's also you
got to get you got to get the rhythm down.
You got still got I don't want them the first
time that they're tackling or that they're being tackled the
Portland State game, that's not going to go well for us.
So it's it's just a hard thing to do because
(13:57):
I think the hesitation is that, well, we want them
to stay hell for the game, But then how are
you supposed to get ready? Prize fighters? They have to
spa that's just part of it. And guys got banged
up today, that's part. We know we're not one hundred
percent healthy because of today. But that's what do you
want me to do? I want to know. I mean,
so it's the risk that you have to take sometimes
(14:19):
and that's a hard thing to say. But like I
don't want guys getting hurt just in the ever, but
if we don't prepare them right, then they're going to
get hurt in the game.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
So we got to do that, all right, Go ahead, Casey, coach.
Speaker 14 (14:32):
I was gonna asked about the health of the team,
and I think you just provided a little update there,
So we'll pivot and ask you. Through the first half
of camp, do you feel like there's an identity forming
around your team or is that still to be determined.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
Yeah, I feel the identities for me.
Speaker 11 (14:47):
I mean, I look at the leadership on the team.
You're starting to see the personality come out in this team.
So part of the identity will be how our offense
responds next week and how they respond on to today.
And it wasn't a horrible day for them. It was
just was a really good defensive day. I mean, but
I'm sure there's some things that Jay and the staff
(15:08):
are going to look at and say, we need to
do better defensively.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
But it was pretty good.
Speaker 11 (15:13):
I mean, like, they didn't they didn't win every rep,
but man, they were really really good and then if
they play at that level, I feel really good about it. Offensively,
we did some really good things, but it just comes
down to the execution, making the right read, making the
right block, running the right route, things like that, and
and those are fixable items.
Speaker 4 (15:32):
So I'm not really I'm not down on the offense.
Speaker 11 (15:36):
We've I've coached long enough now, especially as the head
coach to know that to what to look for in
scrimmage one. And what I saw was really good taking
care of the football. But but again, is it because
we were too cautious and we're in the competition as
a quarterback. As far as interceptions the fumbles, though, I
(15:56):
thought ball security is pretty good. I mean, I emphasize
that as much as possible, But I think the guys
are done a great job all camp. Now, now that
I said that, we might have some problems next week,
but we still got three weeks to go.
Speaker 4 (16:11):
All right.
Speaker 13 (16:11):
We'll go next to Sam Foster and remind everyone just
state who your organization you're with as well, So Sam,
and then we'll have another question from Jake hatch.
Speaker 15 (16:23):
Hey coach, I'm with the Daily Universe, speaking of the
wide receivers, has there been a wide receiver who's kind
of gone out and taking a hold of that wide
receiver two spot behind Chase where it's still kind of
group of guys after him.
Speaker 11 (16:38):
Well, I think the hard thing is to name them
one through ten because the goal is to actually get
the gap between one and ten, to narrow that gap,
and have that gap between one and two to narrow.
And I think that the gap is actually closing in
not because number one is not better, is because two
(16:58):
through ten are getting better, you know what I mean.
And I saw some really good things from from the others.
I mean, Chase is won, but you think others don't
know that Chase roberts Is are a top receiver, so
you know we're going to need other guys to get
open and get the ball too. So it helps that
we have a bunch of bodies there. So we haven't
sorted it out. I can tell you I'm really excited
about the depth of the receiver group though. It feels
(17:21):
good that we have a bunch of guys we know
we can go to and are capable making plays. And
that's a huge credit to Fessi and to what Aron
Then have done on the offensive side.
Speaker 12 (17:31):
Excellent with KSL Sports, Jay keatch I just wanted to
ask you about your offensive line. Do you feel like
coach Woods has got his guys and they're getting I
guess a pecking orders established.
Speaker 4 (17:42):
Yeah, I believe we have a good too deep.
Speaker 11 (17:44):
And what I've been really impressed with is we do
have some depth there at O line, and I know
we do have guys that, you know, if we need
to can go twelve thirteen deep. There's a lot of
guys that have kind of grown up in the program
that have come along that I feel really good about
being on the field and get trust them. And they've
earned this trust by being in the system and more
importantly earning earning the.
Speaker 4 (18:05):
Trust from t J. Woods.
Speaker 11 (18:06):
And so TJ's an amazing job with the old line.
You got to keep working though. There's a lot of
things that you can do, uh to get better. And
today they they made a step forward, but it's again
we we got to it's all about bottom line, which
is putting points on the board, and we got to
do that more. But I saw some really good things
from them. They're physical. They have no choice but to
be physical when you're going against you know, Keanu and
(18:27):
the and the rest of the group. So but I
did like the physical part of the game today. Was
I love the physical the aggression, the the uh just
a smacking of bodies. It was.
Speaker 4 (18:36):
It was a pleasure to see.
Speaker 12 (18:39):
Got one quick follow up to if I could real quick.
I just want to ask you, when you flip over
to the defense, you talk about guys like Keanu, you
said you want to make this as game like as possible.
Do you feel like your guys responded inside the stadium,
et cetera.
Speaker 11 (18:51):
Oh yeah, I thought, I thought, I mean, the challenge
was to get the energy going. And then I thought,
I thought, Keanu to the rest of the guys, Tanner
Wall and you know, Jack Kelly and Isaac Glasker, just
the leadership. The corner group did really good job today too.
I Evan Johnson and Marie Bomba. I mean that they
group really talented. General has done a great job with them.
(19:14):
So but it's one day, you know. Can we do
that consistently over and over again? Can we correct the
mistakes that we made today make sure it doesn't show
up again?
Speaker 4 (19:25):
We just can't.
Speaker 11 (19:26):
We can't just be satisfied with with how we perform
today as a team and as a as a as
a defense or offense. But we can't get down too.
I mean, I feel really good about the progress that
we're making, the steps that we've made towards our first scrimmage,
and now that we're done with the first scrimmage, I'm
really really excited about where we can go with this.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
Very good.
Speaker 13 (19:48):
Are there any other questions that people have while we
got coach Skataki, anybody have anything else?
Speaker 10 (19:57):
Hey, Bran, let me ask coach to Steve McCann.
Speaker 4 (20:01):
Where's the most pressure on a kid who's trying to
be quarterback for the first time at b YU or
a defense that's expected to be as good as they
were last year? Where do you see which group has
the most pressure? Might say, but pressure on all of them.
It's okay, they can handle it.
Speaker 11 (20:20):
Yes, there's nothing wrong with having high expectations of your
team and of your of your players. And so I
think Jay and a Rod and the rest of the
coaches have done that already. We're not ready to play yet,
but we will by the time we show up, you know,
on the thirtieth, we'll be ready to go.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
All right, there you go, all right, all right, there
you go. That's Kalati Sataga, head coach b YU Cougar Football.
Little media scrum post scrimmage let's talk about takeaway sean
some of the nuggets they can from Kalani's comments. What
would you make of it?
Speaker 6 (21:03):
Uh, Yeah, a lot of really good things with the defense,
some less good things about the offense. But everybody wants
to talk about offense, so I think we should probably
start there. I've been really impressed by the level of
physicality that's come through the first week plus a little
more than a week and a half of training camp,
particularly defensively, offensively as well to an extent. But this
(21:27):
defense could be really, really good. And so when you
hear some things about how the defense won this scrimmage
or they're definitely the defense definitely haad of the offense.
Not only is that normal for this time of year
in training camp, I think that's probably going to be
the case with this BYU team in particular. The defense
(21:48):
is probably going to be significantly ahead of the offense
and maybe for a while, maybe even all season. Right,
I don't think that should necessarily stand by itself as
a sign that the offense is in trouble, because there
are a lot of things to like about the offense.
Maybe we'll get into them a little bit later. With
offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick as well. But the defense is
really good. The offense not so much. I think a
(22:10):
lot of that is to be expected and probably expected
because of the question marks around quarterback.
Speaker 3 (22:16):
Hey, you wonder is the comment about the defense being
ahead of the offense in a first scrimmage? Is that true?
It can be true. There's no doubt about it. It
can be true. I will say this much about the
defense versus the offense right now. I believe the expectation
(22:38):
for the defense is to be a top twenty five
defense or even better than that this year. The expectation
is for dominance upfront. The expectation is to have an
equivalency of takeaways that can be replicated from twenty twenty
four to twenty twenty five. Mirror that productivity. Jay Hill
(22:58):
and Killane or happy with the personnel, I'd say the
only void that they would like to fill. I think
they would like to have a consistent and deep forty front.
And I don't know if you have enough of personnel
that you love to go forty front all of the time.
(23:19):
So you're gonna see a you know, multiple fronts. You're
gonna see a lot of different schemes, whether it's three
four four three three three five. It's gonna be a
multiple front. This defense is gonna be good. That is
the expectation. If they aren't good, if they don't pull
(23:41):
their weight, you could be flirting barely getting over the
hump of ball eligibility. If they are top twenty five squad,
then you're getting the Bowl eligibility. Plus you're getting to
that eight win mark, and you're eclipsing that threshold. When
you get into the back end of your season, you
(24:02):
could get the nine wins and so. Discussing floors and ceilings,
which is our question of the day, chime in on
that at Qudal Benjamin want to hear from you on
X chime in, you know, I think the floor for
this team is six and six, and I think the
ceiling in the regular scene is probably nine to three.
(24:24):
The reason why it's not ten and two like it
was last year's because you lost Jake. I think you'll
lose a game, maybe two because of that. The quarterbacks
are not as good as Retzlav. I think you're beginning
to realize that if you're watching any of the tape
coming out of Tulane. Jacob's great, like he looks good
(24:48):
now I know. Decision making, he made some poor decisions
at times. Sometimes he threw the ball side him. Sometimes
he underthrew the the goal line face. Sometimes he was
off balance, off kilter, out of rhythm, maybe on an
RPO quick slant and it got away from I get it.
I'm right there with you. But he looked great this
(25:11):
offseason going into the season. It's unfortunate that he's not
leaving the Cooks because I'd be a whole lot more optimistic,
optimistic about BYU's offense if Jake was at the helm.
So pairing down the quarterback battle, there were some hymen
in han him and han him and had possibly got
(25:31):
to talk to the offensive to have hard to make
that decision. Now got to watch the film. Decision making,
decision making, decision making. They didn't turn the ball over.
Speaker 5 (25:38):
That's good.
Speaker 3 (25:38):
I think early on in practice you probably saw a
lot of picks from Tracon and and and and I
think Bear I think you saw in the first weeks,
even though like we didn't get total eyes on everything,
you probably saw more picks coming from those guys. And
that's why McKay has begun to separate himself. Someone not
(26:00):
do to like playmaking, but just management, which we've discussed
this time and time again. All we're looking for is
a manager. That's what you said. That's what I think
the coaching staff is looking for. Someone's gonna manage the
offense and keep the defense, keep you know, the strength,
the main thing, the main thing, which is don't turn
(26:21):
the ball over. Let the defense do what it's been
built to do, which is get three and outs and
take take the ball away. They're gonna take the ball away,
they will, and they're gonna stop the run. This is
a good, great, maybe even an elite defense this year,
and the special teams won't be too far behind it.
With k Pop at the helm and a great you know,
(26:42):
robust special teams depth chart. They got some good talent there.
So those are some of the things one hundred plays
you did special teams. There were some some some defensive
penalties you didn't want to see, but like overall, the
defense won the day and you can either like that
or dislike that, but that's the reality. That's who we knew.
(27:05):
We know who this team is. I don't think there's
any surprises right now about the identity of this team. Yeah,
I don't. I don't see that changing a whole lot
in the next two weeks leading up to Portland State.
I just don't. I don't see like all of a
sudden McKay becomes Zake Retzlaf and and is even better
than Jake, like you just wanted to manage the game.
(27:30):
If Bear becomes the guy, somehow, some way, you may
go through some growing pains with Bear through those first
six games and they're still very I do think the
pairing down could occur this week, and you may see
you may see McKay and Bear going after it head
(27:53):
to head for the next week or so prior to
the final prep week for Portland State. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (28:00):
Well, on a big chunk of that is because the
longer you go giving equal reps to a three man
quarterback battle, the fewer reps you're, the fewer closer to
live because nothing's totally live right during training camp. But
the fewer closer to live reps you can give to
the guy who ultimately wins that decision. By August thirtieth,
(28:23):
you need to start building up more reps to your
presumed starter, to the guy that's starting to seize control
or will eventually seize control by the start of the year.
Speaker 5 (28:35):
Otherwise nobody's going to be ready.
Speaker 6 (28:38):
Like if all three quarterbacks, all three quarterbacks should prepare
as if they're going to be the guy. But if
all three quarterbacks are receiving the same number of the
guy reps, then none of them are receiving a full share,
If that makes sense. I don't know if I'm explaining
myself very well, but you need to be able to
(28:59):
establish a higher just so that the rest of the
offense can be acclimated in an accustom to to one
guy who was in there. And I'm with you, Ben,
I think that could come as early as this week.
That could start to come as early as tomorrow when
we talked to talk to BYU coaches and some of
the players after practice a little bit. I think we're
(29:20):
going to slowly see that number slowly pair down again.
As a final decision imminent, not necessarily, but I think
as early as this week we're going to see that
number bear down from three to two. I guess kind
of from four to two. Even it's a little bit
of Emerson Gileman in some of those scrimmage high Yeah. Sure,
but you'll as early as this week you'll see that
(29:41):
number kind of paired down to two and then eventually
to one as they look towards that season opener against
Portland State.
Speaker 3 (29:48):
One of the main gyms that I would that I
would take away from the scrimmage, and I know we
want to talk quarterbacks. I think they are going to
pare down. I do think it's going to be McKay
hill said versus bear Bachmeyer type of situation. That's I
take on the matter. But multiple fronts just super dynamic,
Like what's your best position group. It's not necessarily the
(30:11):
defensive line, being though you have some stars on that
defensive line. To me, it's the linebacking corp and you
need to feature that linebacking corps. I think that's an imperative.
Don't sleep on guys like Max Alford Utah State transfer.
That dude could see some playing time, obviously, Isaiah Glasker,
(30:31):
Sialia Sarah Jack, Kelly, Ace Kafu, Sie Micah Kafusi, Max
Out like Shay Bryant Strather, don't sleep on him either.
They're trying to get their playmakers on the field. So
that's an intriguing storyline in of itself. Who's behind those
(30:52):
initial three guys, who's gonna get the additional reps you
know in certain and who's the most versatile because you
may be moving Jack Kelly or you may move in
Isaiah Glaska around in order to get those guys in
pass rushing situations, si Alia Sarah. All three of those
guys are unique in the sense that they can be
first level defenders and second level defenders. That is super
(31:16):
unique that they can hold an edge, pass rush and
b fleet of foot enough to be able to track
sideline to sideline. Those guys are all NFL dudes, and
Ace and Micah and Shay and others are right behind them,
not too far off. We'll go to break. We'll come
(31:37):
back with our question of the day ceiling and floor

get to get into our question of the day. What's
the floor? What's the ceiling regular season for this BA
(34:27):
Cougar football team? To me, the floor is six and six,
like this team will go to a bowl game. There's
no answer butts about it. Everyone's like, well, Ben, that
seems a little low. Like we're coming off eleven two season.
We have a lot of productivity on the defensive side
of the ball coming back special teams should be very
(34:48):
strong offense. Yes, there's some question marks, and the reason
why is because you know, things can fall off the
rails really quickly at certain key positions when injuries occur.
We do have depth, we do have talent, there's no
doubt about it, but there can be a few positions
if you lose certain guys, things could get a little
(35:08):
bit dicey. Like the offense still has to be respectable.
The offense still has to be able to move the football.
The offense has to be able to move the sticks
and score the football. You don't need thirty eight points
a game to win eight, nine, ten games this season.
I don't think you need thirty points a game, but
(35:29):
you gotta be respectable. You gotta be over that twenty
four points per game threshold because and if you ain't, then, yeah,
you could be flirting with a situation where where six
and six is what you end up putting on your
plate and having to eat that up and go to
maybe an inferior bawl, albeit a big twelve related ball.
(35:54):
So the floor is six and six to me. Without
a leader at over back that he's dynamic and and
and has a dual threat capability. I still think the
ceilings nine and three, that's where I'm at, And I
think if you get there and you can be competitive
with prep in a bowl game, you can get the
(36:16):
ten wins. If you're ten and three this season. To me,
that's an awesome follow up to an eleven and two year,
a tremendous, tremendous work being done with some of the
attrition that he experienced. That's kind of where I standing.
The reason why I stand in at nine and three
(36:36):
potential for ten and three is because of the defense,
because of special teams. And Jay Hill addressed the media
after the scrimmage, and you can tell Jay's optimistic. Jay's
a perfecttionist. Jay wants more out of his squad. But
this man likes what he's seeing, So let's get to it.
(36:57):
Let's listen to Because he likes what he's seeing, Oh
my god, there's no doubt about it. But he's always
gonna ask for more. But he likes what he's said.
You can tell in his tone. Let's listen in. Jay Hill,
assistant coach, assistant head coach, as well as your defensive coordinator,
post post practice, post scrimmage.
Speaker 16 (37:15):
Okay, I thought today was a very good day. A
lot of physicality, which I thought was good. We had
a lot of our best players took reps today and
live reps, which I.
Speaker 8 (37:27):
Thought was huge.
Speaker 16 (37:29):
We stayed relatively healthy, which is another huge deal. I
thought we were physical upfront against the run game, which
was a huge bonus. I thought for the first scrimmage
we tackled pretty good and with the ones, we really
didn't give up much in the throw game. So a
lot of good there. I see the depth building, which
(37:52):
is a huge part of camp. You got to build
depth right now. But there's still some two's that got
to get better, and we got time, but we need
to make some progress. So that's pretty vague and vanilla,
but I think that's where we're at.
Speaker 1 (38:11):
All right, very much, very good, Thank you.
Speaker 3 (38:13):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (38:13):
We'll go ahead and start with some questions. So if
you have questions for Coach Hill.
Speaker 13 (38:17):
Just raise your hand in the in the zoom and
we will get to you. We'll start first with Casey
Lindquist with SI dot com.
Speaker 8 (38:28):
Hey, case Hey, coach uh.
Speaker 14 (38:30):
Clannie said, you guys had a really good day on
defense today. What was it that you did so well
in particular? And do you feel like you've started to
establish a pecking order at at you know, along your
depth chart.
Speaker 16 (38:45):
Well, I can say this, the defense should be ahead
on the first scrimmage.
Speaker 8 (38:49):
Normally we have some veteran.
Speaker 16 (38:51):
Guys that have played a lot of football, and I
think I think getting them out there together today was
a huge deal for us, and I thought they played
well together. We don't have the burden of execution, like
the offense hasn't as much, and we don't because like
we could all screw up in the quarterback throwing complete
and no one even knows that we screwed up, and
(39:11):
so they still have the.
Speaker 8 (39:13):
Burden of execution.
Speaker 16 (39:15):
There were a couple of false starts or penalties that
cost them that had them playing backed up against the
chains a.
Speaker 8 (39:21):
Little bit today, which helped us.
Speaker 16 (39:23):
Now, our guys responded well and did some good things.
But I would say for the first scrimmage, I feel
good about where we're at. But we're not content ever,
and we're heading in the right direction. I think the
biggest thing I took out of today that when we
do things right, we can be stout against the run.
And that's a big emphasis of ours off of last
(39:43):
year's season to this year is we got to be
a little more stout and more dominant against the run.
Speaker 13 (39:51):
Okay, go ahead, Sean Walker with kissl dot com, followed
by j Drew from The Desert News.
Speaker 6 (39:58):
This might be a little bit big picture. I'll cry
to micro it as much as possible, coach, because usually
ten days or two weeks, that's where you start getting
sort of the live ish work, the more physical work
where the pads are on. And obviously you want your
guys on defense to you know, the dB sicle for interceptions,
h russures to you know, get after the pastor and
that kind of thing. But how do you sort of
(40:19):
balance that physicality with the offense.
Speaker 5 (40:22):
Working as well.
Speaker 6 (40:23):
Have you kind of started having that conversation of of,
you know, be physical, but also maybe not too physical,
but also.
Speaker 5 (40:30):
You want to be physical if that makes sense.
Speaker 8 (40:32):
Well yeah, no, no, no, I love the question.
Speaker 16 (40:33):
And one thing I love about by U is Kilani
allows a Rod and I to do what we really
need to get done. And working with a Rod is
the best. He understands the big picture. I understand the
big picture, and it's just what you said, like today
we needed to tackle and coach Roderick had a lot
of his guys that needed to get hit, and we
(40:56):
needed to hit because you can't go into game one
without having hit.
Speaker 8 (41:00):
And sometimes we as coaches, we all want to get
there with our best guys.
Speaker 16 (41:03):
But if you get there with your best guys and
you pamper them all through camp, then.
Speaker 8 (41:07):
You're not going to be ready either.
Speaker 16 (41:08):
You're going to get them hurt in the games because
the games are going to be too physical. And so
it's a fine line between doing what you got to
do to be ready to go and not just beating
the crap out of them to where you got everyone
injured come.
Speaker 4 (41:21):
Into the season.
Speaker 8 (41:21):
So I think we've handled that well.
Speaker 16 (41:25):
Like I say, I love working with our offensive staff
because I think they're phenomenal and it's just it's a
good mix right now that we've been able to accomplish.
Speaker 8 (41:38):
Jay at the start of camp, you mentioned that.
Speaker 5 (41:41):
The safety group was a dogfight.
Speaker 8 (41:43):
I think this is what you called it for the
starting spots. Has there been any separation?
Speaker 5 (41:48):
What did today teach you about your safeties group?
Speaker 16 (41:52):
Well, I mean I think there's some separation. I still
think there's five guys right now that we can win
with there's two knocking on the door to join that
group of five. In the five, I would feel comfortable
with either any one of those guys playing. I think
right now, Tanner Wall continues to be Tanner Wall, like,
I just trust him so much. He's he's the guy
(42:14):
that just seems like he's always.
Speaker 8 (42:16):
In the right spot at the right time.
Speaker 16 (42:19):
And then those those next three guys Raider, de Mooney,
Fallaw tell us out the Wall, Tommy Process, those guys
show so many signs.
Speaker 8 (42:28):
Of just being great players that we'll do a good.
Speaker 16 (42:32):
Job of getting those guys all on the field, and
we we might need to come up with some packages
where there's three of them out on the field at
the same time, and that's not things that we've done
that before.
Speaker 8 (42:42):
Okay, So I like where we're at in that room.
We've got to continue to.
Speaker 16 (42:46):
Get better, but I think those guys are showing that
they're ready to be big twelve safeties for sure.
Speaker 1 (42:55):
All right, Our next question is from Jake Hatch.
Speaker 12 (42:59):
Yeah, Jay, your defensive line obviously, Keanu's kind of leading
the charge there, but how do you feel those guys
performed in the scrimmage?
Speaker 4 (43:05):
Just up front?
Speaker 8 (43:06):
Hey, Jake, I love Keanu.
Speaker 16 (43:11):
It's crazy that kid's so hard on himself, Like I mean,
he just expects perfection, and sometimes I think he needs
to just relax a little bit and just allow himself
to have fun because he's playing at.
Speaker 1 (43:22):
A very high level.
Speaker 16 (43:23):
I thought uh JT played at a very good level today.
Those guys are doing some good things and easy. I
can't wait to get Kirkling back, so we're hoping sooner
than later with that.
Speaker 8 (43:35):
That just that just really firms us up in there.
Speaker 16 (43:39):
And then vill Whoah is a He's a real weapon
because he can play on the edge. He's athletic enough
to play the end, and he's big enough to play
inside too, so he he does.
Speaker 8 (43:51):
Some great things. Maybe one of the.
Speaker 16 (43:55):
Places I'm most happy with is our pass rush looks
different right now than it did last year. We got
some dynamic guys off the edge. Some of those young
bucks that we recruited the first year as I was
here are starting to show up, and I can't wait
to watch them in the game because the pass rush
looks good right now.
Speaker 13 (44:18):
All right, A reminder, if you do have a question,
go ahead and raise your hand in the zoom.
Speaker 12 (44:23):
Yeah, I got a quick follow up real quick on that.
Jay Klonnie mentioned the fact that a guy like Body
Schoonover could slot inside to help you get depth issues
at defensive tackle. Are you seeing that yourself? Is he
capable of doing like John Nelson and Blake Manglson have
done in the past.
Speaker 16 (44:38):
Him and Viill Poola are both guys that are big
enough to play inside. They're physical enough. You know, they're
a little undersized, kind.
Speaker 8 (44:47):
Of like Blake was last year.
Speaker 16 (44:48):
But the way coach Pooha and Coach Anderson teach our
inside guys like, I'm okay with those guys moving in there.
Blake Mangleson played outstanding last year in the Big twelve
when he was undersized all year. So I think we're
going to have a good year out of both those,
both those guys. And I love Body because he plays
(45:10):
way stronger than he plays like a three hundred pounder
even though he weighs two seventy.
Speaker 13 (45:18):
All right, Tom, are there any other questions that we
have for for Coach Hill?
Speaker 12 (45:24):
I do have one more for nobody else has got anything?
Speaker 1 (45:26):
All right, You're lucky day.
Speaker 4 (45:28):
Go ahead.
Speaker 16 (45:28):
Hey, you guys are easy on me, Like you sit
there and grind the offensive coordinator.
Speaker 8 (45:33):
I get out of here early. That's good.
Speaker 12 (45:34):
Well, you talked about they have to perform and you
just gonna react, come out.
Speaker 4 (45:38):
It's a different Oay.
Speaker 12 (45:39):
I just wanted to ask you in terms of looking
at your linebacking Coret. You got two veteran guys in
Isaiah and Jack, but you've mentioned guys like Jay, Bryant, Struth,
et cetera, who are stepping up. I know that Celia
Sarah's done his thing. How deep is that unit looking
right now in your opinion?
Speaker 16 (45:54):
No, I just got asked the same question by somebody else,
and I think there's eight deep that can win with
right now. Do I think all eight are ready to
go right now? No, but they've shown signs that, either
athletically or whatever it is, that if something happens and
we got to play with those guys, that will be
all right.
Speaker 8 (46:14):
And Chase one of those guys. Si Ali is one
of those guys.
Speaker 16 (46:17):
As Kafusi, I've seen some really good progression in like
Max Alford, He's done some good things, and then the
future is bright. Now there's some young guys like Pearson
Watson is going to be a really good player. And
I really don't love calling guys out because I don't
(46:39):
want to miss one. But right now, I love what
coach Enna and Coach kaha I have done with that
linebacking crew, and I really believe there's probably eight guys
that come game time we could probably win with.
Speaker 1 (46:54):
All Right, we got a question from Ron Weaver.
Speaker 17 (46:56):
Go ahead, Ron, Thanks coach, what did you like about
your cornerback play today? A lot of guys in that
room had an opportunity to play last year, evaluate their
play after the first scribbage.
Speaker 16 (47:06):
Hey, Ron, so I think before he dinged his shoulder
and he'll he'll be back soon. But I thought Trey
Alexander was playing very good. And then Evan Johnson the
last two practice, two or three practices is really stepping
up and proving to.
Speaker 8 (47:21):
Me that he's going to be ready to go.
Speaker 16 (47:23):
I think Morey's the best he's been since we've been
here and past that.
Speaker 8 (47:28):
We need someone else.
Speaker 4 (47:29):
To step up because I like those three.
Speaker 16 (47:32):
Guys, but we got to have more than three.
Speaker 4 (47:35):
I can say this.
Speaker 16 (47:36):
There's been flashes by Marcus McKenzie. I thought Jonathan Kabay
had a great spring, but we need somebody else to
step up in that room.
Speaker 13 (47:48):
All right, Well, it looks like that's the end of
the questions, Jay, so we appreciate your time.
Speaker 3 (47:54):
All right, there you go. That's defensive coordinator assistant head
coach Jay Hill. One of the first thing that stood
out to me was there during the post post scrimmage
media Ville j Hild state dude that his first team
defense didn't give up much of anything through the air.
Is that something you'd like to hear or dislike to
hear after a first scrimmage when you have a quarterback.
Speaker 6 (48:16):
Battle, it's a catch strange, it's the ever present catch
twenty two of training camp. Is that more of an
indictment on the offense or is that just how good
the defense is? And I think there's a little bit
of both in there. There's a little bit of both
because again, you've got three guys taking the majority of
the reps of the reps with the ones at quarterbacks,
(48:37):
so no guy can take a true majority right again,
ever since Islelmand working in there as kind of the
fourth quarterback as well, so that takes up some reps additionally.
But this BYU defense on the back end has the
potential to be really good. They're extremely experienced at safety,
(48:58):
somewhat experienced cornerback, but with a lot of upside from
a lot of younger guys like the Trey Alexanders and
the Jonathan Conbiaz of the world, who are kind of
jumping into the.
Speaker 5 (49:08):
Fray, if you will.
Speaker 6 (49:10):
And there is a real potential of this being kind
of a no fly zone under j Hill, Gavin Feller
and Gennaro Guildford kind of that three headed monster on
the back end of that defense. So like, yes, that
can go either way, Ben, and it always can go
either way. And I think there's definitely something to be
said about the offense with that remark, But I think
(49:33):
that also says a lot about this BYU defense.
Speaker 5 (49:35):
I think it particularly particularly on the back end.
Speaker 3 (49:39):
Part of the reason why they weren't able to throw
the ball effectively is because they probably weren't able to
run the ball effectively versus this this first team defense,
and a major contributing factor that is I don't I
don't think. I highly doubt LJ. Martin, Shoe Mooa were
running the football in this scrimmage. Nothing to prove. You
don't want to get him injured. You're still the looking
(50:00):
for an RB three, RB four so you were given
a lot of your reps to Joe Vessa Demoni as
well as Nick now Heine. And by the way, I
do find it interesting that Chase though trot it out
there now that that lends itself to continuity chemistry, discussions
between the quarterbacks and having their prime targets out there
(50:22):
that they're going to have in the season and to
try to target Chase as often as possible and get
in a rhythm with them. So but they weren't able
to run the football.
Speaker 5 (50:30):
We did see a little bit of LJ and.
Speaker 6 (50:35):
On the highlight reel of highlights that Brandon's band and
his crew distributed to the media afterwards. From that scrimmage,
we saw a little bit of LG and Shone. But
to your point, we saw a lot of Enich now
Ahine and even a fair amount of Jove, said Mooney,
which I think trends towards that idea that that's sort
(50:56):
of your emerging for if you.
Speaker 3 (50:58):
Will, we need Clear or Patti back, We need an
NCAA waiver to come through. If you want to win,
they're still late in the season. You want to win
early in the season. You needed Hinkley as a part
of that three three core running backs. And that's an imperative.
Fingers crossed. Say your prayers if you need to, you know,
(51:20):
do other things. But I'm telling you, man, it's uh.
I think it's an imperative.
Speaker 6 (51:26):
Hinkley is still in town. He has been around practice. Yeah, yeah,
he was a camp practice because he did technically sort
of have his eligibility labs before the Pavia waiver and
the the new issues around junior college players and that
kind of thing, which is the part he's.
Speaker 3 (51:41):
Got medical COVID year he's got.
Speaker 6 (51:46):
He He has been practicing with the team, but he
has been practicing.
Speaker 5 (51:50):
He's been working out a little bit. I don't think
I'm saying too much.
Speaker 6 (51:52):
With Jaren Hall and Connor pay I saw him the
other day on the practice field. They were actually getting
some work in some routes and hitting like that kind.
Speaker 5 (52:02):
Of stuff, mostly like scaley based stuff with.
Speaker 6 (52:05):
Some pros now Cougar alums obviously trying to get back
into the NFL in the case of Jaren and then
Connor as well.
Speaker 3 (52:13):
Yeah, I thought it was really interesting. He said. Body
Schoonover is two seventy, but he plays like he's three seventy.
I love Body, scooed over. A big fan of Body.
He needs to be on the football field. In my opinion,
if you're gonna go with it with kind of this
multiple front, you're gonna run a little bit more zero technique,
(52:34):
which means count a town of Oscar is gonna be
in the middle with guys like John Tamwipeo and a
Nissi Purcell. Who's gonna be those five techs that can
also too gap but also disrupt and in bull rush
and penetrate and be disruptive. I look at guys like Body, Yes,
Villiambi Pouha can be that guy too, But Body is
(52:57):
a baller. Body can play outside, he can play inside. Yep.
He's got a multitude of talents, a multituit of of abilities.
And I really want to see Body involved in that
defensive front. I think he can do some. I think
he can do that BYU defensive body good.
Speaker 6 (53:11):
Yeah to that note a little bit. I expect a
Body screwon over to be in that two dpit defensive end.
He's gonna see a lot of time there. He should
see a lot of time there. He's one of your leaders,
one of your veterans. Jay Hill also said he can
slide over to defensive tackle right there, so he can
play a little bit of both positions, maybe slightly kind
of sort of undersize in terms of a new tackle,
(53:32):
but that reminds me a little bit of former nose
tackle Blake Mangelsan.
Speaker 5 (53:36):
And you know, we love the Mangler on this.
Speaker 3 (53:38):
If body can two get, then you can run a
little bit more forty front, I think, especially once when
once Kirkland gets back, once he's healthy. Right, absolutely, So
it's gonna be multiple fronts that you're gonna see all season.
Loss They'll get mad by defense. They'll get mad if
you see a thirty front. Okay, just don't get mad.
Don't get mad if we're you know, in a three
(53:59):
four and Jack Kelly's a stand up outside linebacker or
something like that, or Isaiah Glaska is a stand up
outside linebacker.
Speaker 5 (54:05):
Hey, I personally love my thirty techs.
Speaker 3 (54:07):
So you know what I mean. All right, guys, that's
our question of the day. Chiming on it. What's the floor?
What's the ceiling for this BA Cougar football team. I'm
saying six and six is the floor. Nine and three
is the ceiling for the regular season. What do you
think and why we'll go to break. Don't go anywhere.
We're gonna get into our interview segments coming up next,
Let's get to know this BAU football team. What's going
(54:28):
on with the football team? From former BYU greats eyes
and voice Brady Papinga joining us. Next, this is Cougar
Sports on one of three nine ninety eight point three.
Speaker 5 (54:39):
