Aaron Roderick being interviewed by b y U Sports Nation.
Let's start off with the first question here, just kind
of breaking down a few of the the questions here.
What are you noticing in terms of the general progress
of your offense.
Speaker 5 (02:19):
Well, I think we're you know, we're we're working progress.
That's that's what I would say. We're I've been doing
a lot of good things.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
You know.
Speaker 6 (02:26):
We have some veteran players who have played a lot
of football for us that are doing a lot of
good things. We have some young guys that are developing,
and really it's just a matter of just accruing more
reps so that you're timing and and everything is in sync,
and you just have to keep keep practicing to get
ready for that first game.
Speaker 5 (02:46):
But I think we're on the way. You know, we've
been doing a lot of good things in practice.
Speaker 6 (02:49):
I wasn't super pleased with how we played today, but
I'm very optimistic about how we're going to be on
offense this year.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
Very optimistic about how we're going to be on offense.
It was a slop Saturday. Did not look good. That
being said, they did not have all their ones there.
I don't think LJ was playing. I don't think SCIONI
was playing. They did have their wide receivers, they did
have their tight ends. They did have their offensive line though,
so I don't know if they held out Waalan, who
has been a little bit dinged up. That's a possibility
(03:18):
holding out a few of the guys that you don't
just don't want to lose, the tried and true players
that you don't really need to prove, and you don't
need to have them build chemistry with their teammates because
they're gonna be able to be cohesives no no matter.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Who they played with.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
I thought it was interesting though that Chase Roberts did
get trotted out for his quarterbacks to build some chemistry
with That was that was McKay tracing and par Blackmer
trying to get him the ball. There were no highlights
that came at least that we saw from Chase Roberts
that the social media team put out, not to say
he didn't get targeted or didn't get didn't, you know,
(03:57):
obtain a few receptions, but it was it was a
bad day for the offense. The defense definitely won the day.
But a Rod seemingly feels confident that this offense is
going to be able to move the sticks, be able
to score points this season. So any thoughts there, Ronald
(04:19):
the three man weaver or anything that shoot out to
you from that initial.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Answer from a Rod.
Speaker 7 (04:25):
Yeah, to your point, you want to have Chase out there,
regardless of what the situation is. It's your wide receiver one.
He needs to build the chemistry. It's going to be
the primary target on offense. So you need to have
whoever the quarterback is going to be been taking those
reps building that chemistry because, like Brendon Gurney said, one
and down looked for too early and often. Chase, who
has been delegated honestly by the national media top ten receiver,
(04:47):
you know in the country, top receiver in the Big twelve,
he has to be playing in these scrimmages to build
that chemistry.
Speaker 8 (04:55):
But yeah, I think.
Speaker 7 (04:56):
It's I think the biggest thing is just is going
to take time, new quarterback, new system. But when you
have you know, as we talked about before, procedural penalties
that affects how you want to implement go about certain things.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
What are some of the things that were causing you
some concerns in the scrimmage A Rod.
Speaker 6 (05:15):
Penalties today and you know it's what happens in fall campus.
The first day we had a full big twelve officiating crew.
Speaker 5 (05:22):
And when you have, you know, that officiating crew, you
can't get away with all the little things that sometimes
you get away within in a football practice.
Speaker 6 (05:30):
You know, you realize that the game you have to
be on point with all of your execution. You got
to play fast, you got to get lined up, get
your feet set before somebody goes in motion. Just a
lot of those little details that get exposed when you
have an officiating crew. I think, you know that's that's
where we need to start there because you have some
of those mistakes and now you're second, long, third and long.
Speaker 5 (05:52):
It makes it tough.
Speaker 6 (05:52):
But like I said, we've been doing a lot of
good things, but today having that full officiating crew as
an eye opener.
Speaker 5 (05:58):
I think for a lot of our young players.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
I think talent wise, I think physicality wise, length wise.
I like our offensive line. You do have some new faces.
Andrew Gentry at right tackle, Isaiah Johna moving over from
right to left. He did get some time and he's
got experience, but you know a little bit new right
(06:25):
Waylon at left guard, Bruce Mitchellitzen or Austin lew said
right guard. When he says procedural penalties you wonder if
that's offensive line related or more tight end related or
running back related. It's a good point or wide receiver related.
We've seen a legal procedure be a issue, be an issue,
and it doesn't always come from the offensive line.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
It's come from the others.
Speaker 8 (06:51):
Tight ends, receivers covering up people.
Speaker 4 (06:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Yeah, so that could very well be an issue.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
We got to get that. We got to get that
trimmed up. We got to get that prim and proper.
We gotta get that dialed in. So can't have that.
You don't want to be behind the sticks, especially if
you're gonna try it out a true freshman quarterback, an
inexperienced quarterback at the P four level. It doesn't help him,
ain't gonna help you. It's hard to play from behind
(07:21):
like that. How much of the frustration or mistakes a
rod were because you were trying to break in a
new quarterback?
Speaker 6 (07:31):
Honestly, today, I you know, I didn't have that much
to do with the quarterback.
Speaker 5 (07:35):
It was just as a unit, just.
Speaker 6 (07:39):
Getting lined up quickly and playing with a real play
clock and a real officiating crew. And you know, sometimes
you get away with a little holding penalty in practice
that isn't going to get called and there's no consequences
for it, and or maybe it does get called in practice,
but we're not actually driving the ball. You know, those
things get exposed in the scrimmage like today, and that's
why you do It's you have.
Speaker 5 (07:59):
To scrim to learn from those things.
Speaker 6 (08:01):
And I'm really confident that our players will, you know,
take those lessons and apply them to our next practice.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
Got to apply those lessons learned, no doubt about it.
A Rod discussing breaking in the new quarterbacks. Any thoughts there, Ronnie.
Speaker 7 (08:16):
Yeah, I love tell you said it wasn't so much
the quarterback. I think that gives you a little bit
more confidence, he said, a unit. But and maybe you
can shed some light on this. How much of is
on the quarterback to get the call in and get
the guys to the line right, you know?
Speaker 3 (08:30):
I mean it can, but you can't put it on
their shoulders. But ultimately, I think when you're not in
a huddle and you're going quick.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
So if you're going no huddle, and he.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
Mentioned the tempo at which they were trying to play at,
then then you individually have to gaze towards the sideline,
get the call and.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
Get in the right position. Now.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
Granted it's not loud in the stadium at that time,
there can be verbal communication from the quarterbacks to the
tie ends, to the running backs, to the wide receivers. Uh,
do we have a quarterback that's going to orchestrate right
now and you're gonna put that on him? Maybe not,
which then it falls on the individual to know where
(09:15):
to line up rather than being coerced into and in
quarterbacked into the spot. I've seen it both ways where
a quarterback is liable for those things because they're experienced.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
You don't have any experience out there, right, And that's
what I think is not a whole lot at least more.
Speaker 7 (09:32):
Concerning when he says the union part of when you're
not doing anything, you don't have, like you said, the
experience you'd expect guys like you know, and this is
just in general, the offensive line you know, whoever was
playing receivers to have that called out, even if you
know Cody, you know Hagen was out there, Tay like
you guys there there have been guys been that offensive
(09:53):
lineman and receivers that have been in the program now for
two years. Those things shouldn't happen, like, you should know
what the calls are and I don't want to say
have play the bog down, but you should be able
to go up tempo and know that. So there might
be some little concerns, but again it's first scrimmage. They're
trying to figure everything out. Chemistry is a big thing.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
Infesti Satake's initial interview with BYU Sports Nation, he alluded
to the ten.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Day practice threshold.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
Where they wanted to go forward and make a move,
and they have now completed ten practices after Saturday, so
we know that they want to start giving certain quarterbacks
certain reps and understand who that guy is going to
be what specifically a rod are you encouraged by after
(10:41):
ten days of practice.
Speaker 5 (10:44):
Well, I think we're gonna able to run the ball.
Speaker 6 (10:46):
And when we have our best eleven, you know, eleven
to fourteen to fifteen guys available to us, we have
some pretty dynamic personnel groups. We can do some things
in the run game and in the passing game. I think,
you know, we have some good players that are proving guys.
You know, Chase Roberts and Jojo and Parker and lj
(11:07):
And and Carson Ryan. Those are guys that have played
in big games. I probably just left somebody out. And
we have a good offensive line, so I'm very confident
we're going to be good on offense.
Speaker 5 (11:18):
But the offense, there's no shortcuts, you know.
Speaker 6 (11:21):
You have to just rep the plays over and over,
execute and learn to deal with all the different looks
of defense can give you.
Speaker 5 (11:29):
And we're on our way to doing that.
Speaker 6 (11:31):
It's just like I said, it's we're about eight nine
practices in and we've got a few weeks to go.
Speaker 5 (11:36):
Before we're ready to play.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
There you go.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
One of the things that stands up to me, he's
very confident that they're going to be able to run
the ball.
Speaker 5 (11:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Are you as confident that b Y, He's going to
be able to run the ball effectively this year?
Speaker 8 (11:51):
Absolutely?
Speaker 7 (11:52):
Even with the guys that along the offensive line haven't
maybe necessarily all played together, they all have a lot
of experience in the offensive line that's better this year,
and I trust that they all have been working hard.
Like seeing what Isaiah Jada did, seeing Austin LEUSA, seeing
whalanappo a hole excuse me, Bruce Mitchell, Andrew Genthy what
(12:12):
he did in Michigan. I think they will be okay
and able to run the football.
Speaker 8 (12:16):
When you saw what happens when l J.
Speaker 7 (12:18):
Martin is healthy, you saw have spurts last year before
you got dinged a little bit. Those two guys that
you're one and two, still concerned a little bit about
the running back that Ben.
Speaker 8 (12:28):
But yes, I'm very confident.
Speaker 7 (12:29):
I go back to this, remember Aiden Robbins in those
last two games at the end of the season where
he was just breaking off ten yard runs behind that
great offensive line. I really believe you're gonna see something
similar this season. You're gonna see l Jancione get multiple yards.
I think Byu will be close to averaging, if not
over five yards to carry.
Speaker 8 (12:50):
Close to it.
Speaker 7 (12:51):
I really think the boys up front can get a push.
I had answering conversation, you know, when I got the
chance to interview Tree Alexander, and he talked about that
the boys up front can move, and that's something that's
you know, stuck out to him in the offseason was
the offensive line.
Speaker 8 (13:05):
So I trust the boys up front to get it done.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
T J.
Speaker 8 (13:07):
Woods is a phenomenal coach. I think they'll be able
to run the ball. Ben just fine.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
Yeah, I would say I'm confident that Bay you can
run the ball effectively. That being said, Jay Hills defense
did stuff the run. The ones did. They stuffed, they
stopped the passing, stuff the run. So and that's the
top twenty five defense.
Speaker 7 (13:33):
Vas's Jack Kelly, as I say, Laskars next level player,
yali yep.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
So they struggled a bit to run against BYU's defense.
We do know that, but we also know that Bway's
defense should be a top twenty five defense or even better. Yeah,
at least that's the expectation. So take it for what
it's worth, right, that's us reading between the lines here.
How do you feel about the overall health and depth
of your offense?
Speaker 2 (13:58):
Aaron Roderick.
Speaker 6 (14:00):
Well, it's one of those things, you know, no coach
is ever going to say I feel great about our depth.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
You know.
Speaker 6 (14:04):
It's just like because everybody's greedy and you always want
more and more of it. But I do feel like
we're a deeper team each year as we grow in
this program, each year we get a little bit deeper,
and so we've had guys step up at every position
when we've lost people, and I do think we have
enough depth to get through the season. At every position,
(14:27):
but you have to have a sense of urgency when
you're one of those younger guys that's a backup. We're
trying to teach the sense of urgency of how quickly
your opportunity can come, you know. And I think our
running back position last year was a great example of
guys just stepping up game after game after game, different
guys stepping up. Or Enicknawahene played huge for us in
(14:48):
the SMU game and the Baylor game last year, and
he was probably the fifth running back on the depth chart,
you know. And Sony Molla came out of nowhere to
help us, you know, LJ obviously everybody knows him. But
those those types of opportunities happen and you have to
be ready. And so we're we're we're getting to the
(15:09):
point where our younger guys are starting to realize that
game is coming up fast and then gotta be able
to execute.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
So he's greedy, you know, he wants where does he
want more depth?
Speaker 2 (15:25):
Running back?
Speaker 4 (15:26):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (15:27):
Hey, you mentioned like you're now he was the fifth
running back. This is reading between the lines, right, yes,
broke out right, yeah exactly?
Speaker 2 (15:36):
Could I be honest?
Speaker 7 (15:37):
Gotta make a hot take, and you might have to
put this out on socials and I might get pinged
for this later yelling.
Speaker 8 (15:42):
But you might have to buy some stock.
Speaker 7 (15:44):
In the press. Preston Rex have you you may have
to write. And I think that's a smart hot take.
I don't always have gos. But then I'm gonna go
with that one. A did mention Press mentioned Preston, and
I bring that up. It's a position change. You're without
pole guy this year, and it is back like you
might need Preston Rex. He's looked good in you know,
his reps that he's had. But I'm gonna say you
(16:06):
need to buy stock in Preston Res now because you
have no idea.
Speaker 8 (16:10):
It's a long season.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
Ben Preston was mentioned by A Rod in the post
scrimmage press conference.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
If you will so, if if Preston is the.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
Guy, and he's looked good, he's got good vision, good physicality,
good h good lean, good ball security, maybe he's gonna
be a guy that can step up for you that
transition to safety, from safety to running back.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
It has been done before from Matt Hadley.
Speaker 8 (16:43):
He looked good in that day that game I saw
against you, Dubbman. He looked great.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
There you go.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
By the way, guys, we're talking college football here in
the segment reading between the lines, and football season is
here here on the UTI ESPN Ready to network. We're
getting you ready thirty one Days of Football presented by
Baskin Robbins to in daily for the best coverage of
NFL college and Utah area high schools. It's the thirty
one Days of Football presented by Baskin Robins.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
You're home for football on ESPN.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
The fan has one of the three quarterbacks, Aaron Rodericks
started to create some separation in this race.
Speaker 6 (17:19):
Yeah, yes, I mean I think there's starting to be
some a little bit of a separation there.
Speaker 5 (17:25):
I need to watch this film to confirm that. I think.
Speaker 6 (17:28):
You know, because the body of work grows incrementally. You know,
you get a certain number of pass attempts each day
in practice, and you know that body of work grows,
and we're keeping we're keeping track of how these guys
grade out every practice. We keep track of every stat
in practice the same way you would in a real game,
because stats aren't everything, but they do matter.
Speaker 5 (17:48):
It's part of the position.
Speaker 6 (17:50):
And then also just we grade them on if they're
doing the right thing with the ball every play, and
so yeah, it's not going to be equal reughs forever.
Speaker 5 (17:59):
You know.
Speaker 6 (17:59):
That's that's the time is coming soon where we're gonna
have to make some decisions.
Speaker 5 (18:04):
You can't keep you can't keep giving equal reps.
Speaker 6 (18:06):
To three guys or nobody will be ready to play.
So that that time will be coming soon. I'm not
exactly sure how soon, but we are watching it very
closely every.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
Day, so it seems like after ten practices they are
going to whittle it down.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
Yes, they're gonna pay it down.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
They're going to give two quarterbacks the opportunity to compete
now at least for the next week before they decide
who the guy is. They could be leaning one direction.
As you heard from Aaron Roderick. That was nice sinc
for a guy they can't sink. I'll take that.
Speaker 8 (18:45):
You know what that tells me?
Speaker 2 (18:46):
Right there?
Speaker 7 (18:46):
That's a good time. But I'm going to cut you
know what that tells me. I want to tell you,
but I need to counsel maybe.
Speaker 8 (18:55):
A little bit before I tell you.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
All right, all right, there you go. It's it's whittling down.
Speaker 3 (19:05):
So that would lead me to believe that McKay hill
said versus pair Bachmeer's occurring this week. Agreed, and they
could be leaning one direction or the other. But that's
where it stands right now. You gotta pair it down,
you gotta whittle it down, and I think McKay Hillstead
and bear Bachmeyer going to get most of these reps
now moving on. You have been very outspoken a right
(19:28):
over the years on ball security, on a quarterbacks ability
to get his team to the line right and to
do so in maybe a timely fashion.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
Along with the red zone efficiency.
Speaker 3 (19:36):
What else would you add to the list of a
rod love language is great question. I think that from
Spencer Land when it comes to who the starting quarterback
is going to be, well.
Speaker 5 (19:47):
Yeah, you're you're right.
Speaker 6 (19:48):
It starts with taking care of the football because if
you can't score without it, okay, if you give it
to the other team, you can't score.
Speaker 5 (19:54):
So that's scoring is the name of the game.
Speaker 6 (19:57):
If you take care of the football, you always give
yourself a chance to win. So you know, last year
we want to tight.
Speaker 5 (20:03):
You know you win.
Speaker 6 (20:04):
You win some tight games that are high scoring, you
win some tight games that are low scoring. But if
you if you're if you take care of the ball,
you give yourself a chance. So it starts there, and
then you know, just accuracy, throwing completions, moving the team.
Speaker 5 (20:18):
You know, the guy that moves the.
Speaker 6 (20:19):
Team the best down the field and scores points because
that's the name of the game.
Speaker 5 (20:23):
You got to score.
Speaker 6 (20:24):
And so that's kind of what we're looking for in
you know, decision making is huge part of the game,
and so we're looking for a good decision maker who's
accurate and takes care of the football, and then.
Speaker 5 (20:38):
Explosive plays is the final thing.
Speaker 6 (20:41):
You know, you can it's hard to it's hard to
win games going on twelve thirteen, fourteen.
Speaker 5 (20:46):
Play drives. We love those and we've had our share
of those over the years.
Speaker 6 (20:50):
And when you do when you when you know, when
you chew a bunch of minutes off the clock and
score a touchdown, that can be demoralizing to the other team.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
But it's hard to.
Speaker 6 (20:57):
Do that over and over and over again without getting
some chunk plays. And so we're looking also for the
quarterback that can create those explosive plays for us. You know,
those twenty thirty forty fifty yard games that you know,
really put pressure on the other team, and so I'd
say those are those are the things that are really
driving this decision.
Speaker 3 (21:20):
Anything can stand out to you there, Ronnie, you want
to delve into as we shore up finish up this
reading between the line segment that all bring up the
caboose here.
Speaker 7 (21:29):
Yeah, he said, the guy that moves the team down
the field the best and has explosive plays. Don't get
me wrong. Remember Oklahoma State they ran the ball ten
ten plays in a row. They took time off the clock.
They were on a mission, right, that was a part
of the game plan and adjustment and at halftime.
Speaker 8 (21:43):
But what did they do after that?
Speaker 7 (21:44):
You know, they went back to running a normal offense
where they threw the ball down the field remind you
what it was four or five plays and they got
Knians on the walk it off, right, And you don't
want to be in that situation. But I bring up
as my example of you need explosive plays. We saw
from Jaron and Zach explosive play sometimes one, two, three
or four, maybe six. You can't have ten to eleven
(22:06):
twelve long drives in a game. Look at the NFL
like at that point, like you don't see guys doing
that sometimes they take it off. But the most successful
offense is of what ben if you can push the
ball vertical for twenty twenty five thirty forty fifty plus
yards on certain plays. So the quarterback that does that
will be named the starter. All have the armability and
can spend it right to do so. But yeah, whoever
(22:28):
does that the best, as a Rod said, will have
the greatest chance. And that might be right now, you know,
mchayhill stad in bear Bachmeyer.
Speaker 3 (22:36):
There you have it, A great reading between the line segment.

continue down the line of questions that we're posed by
Aaron Roderck after the scrimmage, your offense coordinator, you're quarterbacks
coach as he tries to figure out who his QB
one is, It looks like it's McKay Hillstead or bear Bachmeyer.
We're going to get into some of the final questions

Speaker 2 (24:30):
All right, Aaron Roderick.
Speaker 3 (24:32):
Now he has said a few moments ago in this
particular interview that is going to be equal reps going
forward for these uh, these two quarterbacks. When do you
anticipate that is going to happen?
Speaker 5 (24:47):
I'm not sure. I want to watch this film.
Speaker 6 (24:49):
I want to talk about with our staff and obviously
with Kilane. But you know, we, like I said, it
won't be it'll be soon. It'll be soon, and I
don't that could be, that be the end of next week,
it could be early next week.
Speaker 5 (25:02):
I need to see.
Speaker 6 (25:04):
It'd be unfair of me to make that decision right now.
And we just played about one hundred snaps out there
and I haven't watched the tape yet.
Speaker 3 (25:12):
Got to check the tape and start distributing those reps equally.
Earlier today we saw McKay hill, State of bear bachmer
get the majority of the one reps, and so it
looks like those are the two lead horses right now,
the two top dogs. We'll see how the quarterback competition
continues to play out.
Speaker 2 (25:30):
But follow up here.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
Last year, we weren't sure, at least publicly, who was
going to be the starting quarterback until game number one.
Do you anticipate a similar situation this season?
Speaker 5 (25:43):
Probably not.
Speaker 6 (25:44):
I think last year it was sort of to our
advantage to not let the opponent know who is going
to run out there. And this year, you know, we
haven't really talked about that yet. But I think this year,
when we do make a decision, we'll probably just make
it and say say who it is.
Speaker 5 (26:01):
But again, I need to talk to Clawnie about that
and see what.
Speaker 6 (26:04):
We haven't discussed that yet, so he might he might
answer opposite me, and you guys might think come up
on the same page or something.
Speaker 5 (26:09):
But because we haven't talked about it yet.
Speaker 6 (26:12):
But personally, I don't see any big advantage this year
to not letting the opponent know. Last year, you know,
it was that was an interesting situation with Jake and
Gary and you know Gary's ability to run the way
he did at Baylor and that that type of thing.
Speaker 5 (26:28):
It was we just tried to, you know, give ourselves
an advantage in game one.
Speaker 6 (26:34):
The game before the game, I respect it, really, and
really game two in game three, because those those teams
are already looking ahead, Hey, who are we preparing for?
Speaker 5 (26:42):
That type of thing?
Speaker 6 (26:43):
So you give you give your second opponent and your
third opponent a little less time as well to know
who to be ready for.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
There you go.
Speaker 3 (26:51):
H So they're going to actually announce, most likely who
the starting quarterback is going to be, citing the fact that.
Speaker 2 (26:59):
It really doesn't matter.
Speaker 3 (27:00):
They haven't seen any one of these quarterbacks recently. They
don't have film on them. It's not gonna matter who
they tried out there. I guess they can pull up
the old high school tape. But it was somewhat of
a competitive advantage because you had Gary Bohanna significant Garable
handed film the former fashion which he played, and then
Jake Retz left as well, Retil Jake.
Speaker 7 (27:19):
Had played the four games prior, you know, been before that,
so there was more tape on those guys as like
you mentioned not to.
Speaker 3 (27:25):
The how much does Festi's opinion on the passing game
in the passing game coordinator position factor into the decision
as well as Kolane's a rod.
Speaker 6 (27:40):
Oh, yeah, Festi has a huge role in this. He's
our passing game coordinator. He coaches our receivers. I've been
coaching with him for a long time and we have
a great relationship, and I trust him very much, and
so I very much counted his opinion. And then I'll
add to that though our whole coaching staff, this is
the most quarterback friendly, quarterback knowledgeable coaching staff I've ever
(28:05):
worked with. You know, Kevin Gilbride played quarterback in college.
He's our tight ends coach. He played quarterback in college.
He's been in the NFL for a long time. You know,
his dad was a famous offensive coordinator and and UH
head coach that he has a lot of knowledge as
well where he gives good input.
Speaker 5 (28:23):
Coach Woods our offensive line coach. I mean, he is.
Speaker 6 (28:27):
Absolutely every single thing he does in the run game
and the passing game, he's always thinking of the quarterback first.
And that's that's a pretty interesting approach for an O
line coach. A lot of those on line guys don't
think much about the QB part of it. And then
of course Matt Mitchell's involved, and but Fesi's role is
huge to you know, to go back to that, and
(28:49):
I trust him very much and he'll he'll definitely be
be in that conversation. That's why I don't want to
like go too far with making bold statements until I've
talked to these guys, because I welcome the input and
I want it, and I don't sleep well at night.
This is you know, I feel an obligation first of
all to our players and the coaches in the program,
(29:10):
and then I feel an obligation to you know, our
our quarterbacks. I want to do right by them and
be fair to them. And then all of kugarnation is
counting on us. You know, the standard doesn't drop. You know,
whoever takes that feel is gonna be expected to play
like up up to the BYU quarterback standard that's been
set by so many other great qbs.
Speaker 5 (29:29):
And so you know, I take that very seriously and
I want to do right for everybody. And so it's tough.
Speaker 2 (29:38):
He doesn't get much sleep these days.
Speaker 3 (29:41):
Takes He's gonna take a lot of time, a lot
of effort, a lot of counsel from from his staff.
It's not just his decision, it's everyone's decision, all right, Abron.
Final question from his interview with Spencer Land and bau
TV Assess what each of the quarterback is doing well
and what you are pushing each of those three individuals
(30:03):
to work on right now, beginning with McKay, Hillstead.
Speaker 5 (30:07):
McKay.
Speaker 6 (30:08):
For McKay, it's just a matter of you know, he's
operating so much more quickly this fall than he did
in the spring, and you can just see that his
comfort level in our offense has really grown.
Speaker 5 (30:18):
And I'm pleased with that growth.
Speaker 6 (30:20):
And it's what a difference from springball till now and
how he's operating, and I would like to just see
him continue to be able to just push the tempo,
like get a play called, get our team going, get
lined up, you know, move things along. You know, it's
one of those things as a fan you're watching the game,
you probably don't really notice, but the faster you can
(30:41):
get that.
Speaker 5 (30:42):
Call, get things, get people going lined up, the more.
Speaker 6 (30:46):
Playclock you give yourself to see what the defense is doing,
you know. So that's why I want to see McKay
just keep growing in his and how fast he plays
and how how he processes the information and moves our team.
Speaker 5 (30:59):
And yeah, that's that's that's what I'm looking forward to him.
Speaker 6 (31:02):
Trason, he actually is the guy who knows the offense
the best of the three, I would say, just he's
been in the program a little bit longer than the
other guys, and you know, I think Trayson is doing
a lot of good things for our team. And really
it's just consistency day in and day out, just being consistent.
Speaker 5 (31:19):
He knows what to do, he runs the team well.
Speaker 6 (31:21):
Just I just want to see a high level of
consistency from him.
Speaker 5 (31:24):
Very very talented guy, very smart.
Speaker 6 (31:27):
It's amazing he's only been here well I think it's
a camera tables practice eight or nine, But to be
in college football, you know, for eight or nine practice
and to know our offense as well as he does
is very impressive. And with Bear, you just what we
just need to see is just reps with our best players.
You know, those those reps just grow a little bit
each day. And there's times where like he's doing the
(31:50):
right thing with the ball, but maybe he hasn't thrown
that particular route to.
Speaker 5 (31:53):
That guy before and might maybe work.
Speaker 6 (31:57):
A couple of inches off, because just sometimes it's things
like a person's body language as they're coming out of
their break and understanding the timing of it.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
You know.
Speaker 6 (32:06):
With Bear, it's just a matter of building up his
reps and gaining experience. But I'm very pleased with him.
And like I said, all three guys are better than
Tracon and McKay are both much better than they were
in spring and much better than they were a year ago.
So I'm pleased with their improvement. And then Bears giving
them everything they can handle. He's right in the mix.
Speaker 3 (32:27):
All right, man, there you go. That's the breakdown from
Aaron Roderick. What are your takeaways, Ronnie from that soundbites
Aaron Roderick breaking down all three quarterbacks.
Speaker 7 (32:37):
Well, he said, obviously Ben and guys, reminder give to
people some context right here. Ben, to finish up this
segment of the sound from the previous segment, he went
back and looked at the film.
Speaker 8 (32:46):
This was from last week. They narrowed it down.
Speaker 7 (32:49):
This is Saturday. This is Saturday, so remind people. So
he's looked at the film. He's declared okay, two horse racists.
What we've seen McCay and Bear from being at practice
today tracing looks like it's gonna be QB three Emigon
government is getting reps and pass us whatever that means.
And Bear has taken more reps with the ones and
they've liked what they see. So that's what it's come
(33:12):
down to. So everything that he discussed with us on
Saturday has come into life fruition. They've started to make decision.
They haven't made eight a decision. He's gonna have to
ask Fessi Kalanie. But if you go back to Fessi Ben,
what if Fessie said about Bear. They've all had high
praise about Bear and McKay both, but they like something
about Bear Bachmeyer. And he's a freshman, he's young, he's
(33:34):
got a lot of upside. So it's gonna be tough.
So I'll go back to my declarative statement. It might
be right now Bear Bachmeyer's job to lose.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
Actually we'll go to break.

They hired former.
Speaker 3 (36:19):
Duke assistant Jay Lucas and added top transfers Malik renew

few nice opponents. It's a nice way to kick off
Turkey Day and the Thanksgiving weekend. Shout out to this
Cougar basketball team, Ronald any thoughts, any commentary here in
the Cougar in Sader Report.
Speaker 7 (36:55):
Look, if you had to ask, been based on you're
looking at brand, you're looking at name. We've talked about it.
We spoke with at John Ordenberg, you know, with non
conference and you and I both don't expect them to schedule,
you know, obviously games like that unless you have the
number one recruit in the country. When you think of that,
going back to my original comment, who's probably b why
(37:16):
you would want to see them face from a national
brand perspective, all of that, it's Miami done against George Own,
not against Dayton dat and I think is probably the
best besides team next out of BYU. But if you
were to ask from that standpoint, who do want to see?
You're probably gonna want to watch Thanksgiving night? B why
you play Miami?
Speaker 4 (37:34):
Right?
Speaker 7 (37:34):
That's gonna get the views, gonna get the clicks on Thanksgiving,
people are gonna watch a viewership on ESPN.
Speaker 8 (37:39):
That's the best game to televise.
Speaker 7 (37:40):
And then most likely in the championship game, not even
most likely what I will think I'll be declared the
championship game, b Yu versus Dayton Black Friday, That's what
I think.
Speaker 8 (37:50):
I like the matchup. It's a good opportunity, Ben.
Speaker 7 (37:52):
We need to enjoy this and that when I mean
media fans, I know Kevin Jung signed a long term deal.
You don't know if you're ever gonna get number on
recruiting the country every again. You know, and they're advertising
them in every which way, shape or form, Thanksgiving, Christmas,
you name it, New Year's enjoy it. So enjoy this
opportunity for BYAU to play Miami. You might not get
this again next year, the next three or four, five years.
(38:14):
Nothing's guaranteed, right, So enjoy this opportunity for the opening
round against a good opponent, a brand opponent football school,
probably Miami, but they've done some great things basketball wise
as well.
Speaker 8 (38:24):
So I'm looking forward to this matchup. And not too late.
Speaker 7 (38:27):
Been five pm right on ESPN, so you and the

So where does that come from?
Speaker 6 (39:28):
Like were you mimicking?
Speaker 5 (39:30):
Did it just come naturally?
Speaker 9 (39:31):
I think it just like kind of came naturally. I
don't know. It's kind of hard to put my finger on.
Speaker 4 (39:36):
Honestly.
Speaker 9 (39:36):
I grew up like a basketball junkie, So I think like,
even if you're not like intentionally like watching and like
paying attention likesmosis, yeah, you're just like absorbing what you're
you're consuming. And I think, like I always watched Steph
or even Jimmer, like who I love, Like I told
Jim or this, like when we were doing Sue's places,
like he was one of my favorite players growing up,
and there was the famous song teach Me how to Jimmer,
(39:57):
And I had the shirt that said teach me how
to Jimmer, Like if you haven't seen it, look it
up on YouTube. It's to teach me how to Dougie Reenman,
to teach me how.
Speaker 2 (40:05):

Speaker 4 (40:06):
I know.
Speaker 9 (40:07):
I don't think I have the shirt anymore, but yeah,
but I think it's just like from how much I
watched basketball, even like high school basketball, the college basketball,
and then obviously professionally, like I just loved being around
the game, and I think it just kind of came
with some of that.
Speaker 3 (40:20):

guy's the greatest score of all time.
Speaker 8 (41:29):
Are saying, Hey, that's all I gotta say to that.
Speaker 3 (41:31):
And do you think Caitlin Clark's going to be the
best score all time in WNBA history?
Speaker 8 (41:37):
She has the potential to. I won't to be declared
of and say that.
Speaker 7 (41:39):
You want to talk about, you know, things going on
on the w She's dealing with the growing industry. You know,
she's not playing right now and you never know, like
is that gonna derail? I hope everybody gets healthy, but
right now she's not playing Ben and I can't really
say that. So, yeah, she's not playing her sophomore season.
That was supposed to be a year she was in
an MVP conversation. I didn't even think she was nowhere
(42:00):
near that, but that's what the sources in the league
were saying in the WNBA. But she's got the potential
she stays healthy. Definitely, the three point shot helps you.
I mean, look at Steph Curry. Steph Curry's increased his
you know, all time ranking of scoring because of that.
Speaker 8 (42:14):
So she got an opportunity.
Speaker 7 (42:15):
Don't know she'll be that, but if you're healthy, you
don't have longevity, and you can hit a lot of threes,
you got an opportunity.
Speaker 8 (42:21):
Still like Jim, are better though.

I think it's a fantastic team. You know, obviously Miami

one of those things that they're not a household name.
It's not like they've made incredible noise, consistent noise in
the last decade. But it's none of thee less a

me a lot of the year after Hoppa. You know,
back in two thousand and four, two thousand and five
they got to go to Maui. They have all sorts
of all situations going on, and you know, this is
this is the AJ effect, this is the Kevin Young
impact effect.
Speaker 4 (45:45):
And so to have BYU highlighted.
Speaker 10 (45:47):
In one of these holiday tournaments, I think it's a
fantastic thing. And it's only only beneficial to grow the
BUYU brand.
Speaker 2 (45:54):
It's huge to grow that BYU brand.
Speaker 3 (45:58):
Get Nashal if you will, and rep the y throughout
the country doesn't hurt that you're going to be in
a warm weather destination. You can go check out Harry
Potter World and Disneyland if you want a disney World rather. So,
you know, where do you stand right now with the schedule?
What do you like about the schedule? Is there anything
you dislike about the non conference schedule for BAU basketball.
Speaker 10 (46:21):
I mean, I to be one hundred percent honest with you,
I can't imagine anybody not being set aside with this schedule,
not being over the moon with this schedule.
Speaker 4 (46:30):
You know, you look at the types of games are
going to play.
Speaker 10 (46:33):
You know, going to to the to the Celtics gym
to play Yukon, going to Medicine Square Garden, you know,
for a massive challenge.
Speaker 4 (46:42):
I mean when you.
Speaker 10 (46:43):
Look at the type of of of of teams that
they're playing, you know, playing North Carolina for an exhibition game,
you know, inter squad scrimmage. I mean the level of
the level of height that is surrounding this team. And
I think it's very much earned and very much you know,
on Paul, with the way the season is going to go,
Ron made a point the last time I was going
(47:03):
to show last week he said, you know, Kevin Young
is preparing the last year he prepared for the season,
for the postseason, doing Big twelve, the second part of
Big twelve, you know, the Big twelve play. And so
it feels like he is anticipating, not like anticipating in
the sense of, you know, he's waiting for something, but
(47:24):
he is starting the process off, crapping for a lot of.
Speaker 4 (47:29):
Success much earlier in the season.
Speaker 10 (47:32):
And so you look at the way that the the
year ended, and they were peeking, you know, at the
in the middle of February and of February they were
going on them. They were they were super hot, right,
and so you know, talking to Bhim the other day
as well, looks like they're doing all of this and
you may be able to challenge Houston for the Big
(47:53):
twelfth crown at this point, right with North Carolina coming
in early, you know, facing Yukon, facing all of these
teams early in the year. It will allow you to
be more battle tested. You know, when those dog days
of January that you know it is, knowing outside it's cold,
it gets dark at two thirty in the afternoon, and
(48:15):
you have Baylor coming in, you have Houston coming in,
You know, you have all of these different all of
these different massive programs that are.
Speaker 4 (48:21):
Coming in and U and so Kevin.
Speaker 10 (48:24):
Young is you know, starting early the process of getting
these guys to peak so that when they peak, they
can stay at the high level and knock thrash it down.
And so what an amazing schedule has been put has
been has been you know, organized and put together.
Speaker 7 (48:38):
Now we know JT the Big Twelve schedule won't come
until I believe it's a second weekend September.
Speaker 8 (48:44):
It won't come until a little bit later.
Speaker 7 (48:45):
We got the non con I want to jump the
conference play because the metrics say they're supposed to go
twelve and one, if not thirteen and O. Do you
expect this team to finish number two in the Big twelve?
It's hard to bet against Houston what Kelvin Sampson has going.
But do you anticipate that Big twelve, you know, championship game,
you know, Calm March.
Speaker 8 (49:04):
Do you think you'll be b YU in Houston?
Speaker 10 (49:07):
So I very much expect to be BUYU in Houston.
I think there are a lot of factors that you know,
we can't consider at this point, you know, especially in
the middle of August. You know, injuries is one performance,
you know, maybe a dark force that comes out of nowhere,
right that we're not expecting. But I will say, is
ron I think my answer what may satisfy you, which
(49:29):
is if BYU doesn't finish in the top four of
the Big twelve, that is in itself as a red flag.
Speaker 4 (49:35):
Now is it a massive red flag?
Speaker 10 (49:37):
Not necessarily, but it is one that if everybody's healthy,
everybody's playing, and they're not at the top four, you're like,
you know, I'm most like the Scooby Doo, like you know,
like what's going on here?
Speaker 4 (49:48):
Like what you know?
Speaker 10 (49:50):
And so I think there are certain metrics that you're
expecting to see, right, is it going thirteen and oh?
Speaker 4 (49:56):
Twelve and one? Is that one of the metrics? I
don't know. I'll very much to expect them to probably
be you know, eleven and you know, eleven and.
Speaker 10 (50:04):
Three, maybe twelve and two, maybe you know, twelve and one,
thirteen and one. I remember exactly how many non conference
games they have, but I was very much you know,
if they lose more than two games on their non
conference schedule, I think that's a red flag.
Speaker 4 (50:19):
Ce. Okay, you know what is going on here, right.
Speaker 10 (50:22):
I mean, you look at New PRAWLN and you look
at the game of Medicine Square Gardens. Those are the
ones that you're like, you know, this is a test.
And I'm okay with those tests. Even Miami in Orlando.
I don't think that's a massive, massive test, right, you know,
mainly because excuse me, guys, maybe because the Kevin Younger
read to prove he can win. That reminds me of
(50:43):
the of the UCF game last year for b YU
desperately needed to win. UCF is not a powerhouse. They
went and got the job done and they were able
to win, and they were able to move on, right,
And and that's finally happened.
Speaker 4 (50:58):
And I think that's what I'm seeing here.
Speaker 10 (51:00):
You know, I see that game with Miami as a
game that you're supposed when you should win and unless
there is something you know, odd, like there is injury
or there is somebody not playing or whatever, or maybe
Miami has you know, someone that's playing, like a top
ten pick, you know, it won't explain that loss to Miami.
Speaker 4 (51:22):
And so that's my expectation.
Speaker 10 (51:25):
And then you know, obviously going to conference just to
reach away what I said if YU doesn't finish in
the top four, at that point you have to look
in and go, wait a minute, what is happening here?
Why is this not a top four team in the
Big twelve conference? And so I think those those types
of things, right, those types of checks you know, throughout
the season are going to tell us a lot about,
(51:45):
you know, where this team has the potential. And then
we talked about this a lot, you know, back in May,
back in June when all of this was coming together.
To me, the ceiling of the scenam is in the
national Championship. That's always the ceiling for every team, right.
I think if this scene, you know, goes to the
final four, that is damn really maxing out their potential,
(52:07):
you know, to an incredible level.
Speaker 4 (52:09):
Right.
Speaker 10 (52:10):
And and then again if they don't, if they have
more than two losses in the non conference schedule, if
they don't finish in the top four in conference.
Speaker 4 (52:19):
Play, and then.
Speaker 10 (52:22):
If they don't make you know, to the second round
of the NCAA Tournament, to the round of thirty two,
I think that you know, this this season needs to
be needs to be reevalued, you know, in terms of
a success.
Speaker 8 (52:34):
Yeah, you definitely look at all of those.
Speaker 7 (52:36):
When you finish technically tied for third, but your fourth
in the Big twelve, the expectations the bar has raised,
you know, with a great sophomore trench or point guard.
Speaker 8 (52:45):
Getting Richie back AJ. I want to stay on Richie.
Speaker 7 (52:48):
We've talked so much about Rob aj Rifley, so but
I feel like Richie has gotten left out at times
this summer. Not all the way, you know, because Rob
and AJ posting one on ones. Rich is kind of
a silent killer, just works hard. But then I see
a video of him being guarded by Caernard right dom
and he just gets the ball, dribbles right, pulls up
right in their face and hits a three. Please give
(53:08):
some love to Richie and just having him back, because
I feel like he gets lost and sometimes people even
refer to him as the third option on a team,
which I just don't believe is going to be true.
Speaker 10 (53:20):
Well, I mean, so, you know, perspective is reality, right
and the perspective right now is that AJ is the
number one player in that country from high school, rightfully so.
And Robert Wright is you know, a lottery pick in
the making. Right when you look at Richie, he is
(53:44):
not as high as those guys, and I think I
think that's that's not a bad thing right now.
Speaker 4 (53:49):
The difference is he's been there, he's done that.
Speaker 10 (53:53):
I mean, Richie Saunders is going to go through a
gauntlet off a season where he already went to a
gauntlet of sea and he was able to deliver one
for the record books. Right The fact that he wasn't
an All American is you know, is a travesty. And
so it's but it's a typical Richie rounders. You know,
Richie Saunders, you know story, it's the narrative around him.
(54:17):
You know, nobody thinks much of him, you know, forever
reason that's unknown to men, and he goes and proves
everybody wrong. I mean even last year, if you guys remember,
and we were on the show all the time talking
about this, he wasn't even the number one guy that
was being talked about as the main returning guy for
Kevin Young.
Speaker 4 (54:37):
It was dellan home.
Speaker 10 (54:39):
And so it's the narrative around Richie, which is the
absolutely you know, underdog.
Speaker 4 (54:45):
And he thrives on that, thrives on that.
Speaker 10 (54:48):
Think about the little smirk right now, the Richie Saunders,
you know, you know spirit animal in me is giving
a little smirk, just like he was giving a little
smirk when he was walking up to the free throw
line in that Arizona game in Tucson. And so that's
just the way it is about Richie Saunders. And obviously
it's not the way that you know, you want it
(55:09):
to be, not the way that he should be because
of how good he is, because of the way that
he played last year, you know, But what it remains
to be seeing. What remains to be seen is with
Robert Wright with a j with all the weapons that
they have on the arsenal right now, with you know,
(55:30):
Luke Bernard and Dominique Diamante and all of these guys.
Speaker 4 (55:37):
Richie is still under talked about. And we haven't even
mentioned Xavion, we haven't really talked about KaDee.
Speaker 10 (55:44):
We haven't really mentioned a ton of Keva, you know,
like we you know, we're barely mentioning Alexey because because
he just got here.
Speaker 4 (55:55):
But there are multiple things you haven't even talked about.
Speaker 10 (55:57):
In Brodie Kablowski, who should have a bigger role this year.
Speaker 4 (56:00):
And so all of these things.
Speaker 10 (56:02):
You also have the tires Kid, the new Kid, the Shooter,
and so there are there are so many weapons on
this team and that's why I say it is and
then we haven't even talked about Baker yet, and so
there are so many This team is so loaded that
if you know, when Kevin Young get these guys buying
(56:23):
into they're gonna be like a well oiled machine, you know,
just performing and playing well. And I just want to
I just want to ch rate something that you know,
it was very much done last year. Trey Stewart never
got upend of playing time until mid January, right until
mid January or early February, and then he turned out
(56:44):
to be a massive contributor. And so you know, it's
not how you drive, you know, it's it's how you arrive.
And but again, there are some metrics during the season
that as you count on that you will see how
this team is progressing. And for these guys to be
where they should be, Richie is gonna have to be
the Richie that we saw last year. Anything else less
(57:05):
than that, then you know, expectations gets cute.
Speaker 3 (57:08):
Speaking of Trey Stewart, he just signed a professional contract
to play overseas. I thought that was interesting, right, that
guy that didn't play a Ton in his career was
a role player.
Speaker 2 (57:20):
How did he get a professional contract?
Speaker 4 (57:22):
Do you think?
Speaker 10 (57:25):
Well, because he does all the little things.
Speaker 4 (57:27):
Let me tell you guys something.
Speaker 10 (57:29):
One of the the best, one of the best American
players I ever faced in Italy was someone that.
Speaker 4 (57:38):
Could and shoot to save his life. Wasn't a score.
Speaker 10 (57:42):
He was someone that became a defensive specialist. And his
name is David Moss. I don't remember where he went
to college. You guys can look it up. Look it up,
David Moss basketball, Sienna.
Speaker 4 (57:54):
You guys are in front of a computer. I'm not,
and you can't see that.
Speaker 10 (57:58):
David Moss became one of the best in Europe, making
a million dollar plus a year, over and over again,
making to the euro League Final four because he became
a role player, because he was a defensive specialist that
shut down the other team's best player, knew how.
Speaker 4 (58:14):
To play basketball, knew how to make smart plays.
Speaker 10 (58:17):
That is the definition of Trace Tours. And so beyond
excited for Trey. I'm sad because of some of the
some of our favorite.
Speaker 4 (58:25):
Hats will now take longer to be released. But you know,
very very.
Speaker 10 (58:30):
Proud of him, about of mag for also getting a contract.
We knew about Foos going to France to Strasbourg. Trey
Kraft is doing the three or three thing, and obviously,
you know Yegor, I think he's going to pay play.
Speaker 4 (58:46):
New York next year.
Speaker 10 (58:47):
Guys, I don't remember now playing Brooklyn or Queens one
of those teams.
Speaker 4 (58:52):
Jegor is gonna be playing for, right, So.
Speaker 3 (58:55):
Yeah, I was, I was, you know, looking at those
five players that signed, you know, contract professional. Actually Trev's
gonna play in the three on three circuit, which is awesome.
Trey getting signed overseas, I thought that was great. We
know Yegor was going to be a lottery pick, but
b way, you continue to produce even you know, I
(59:16):
would say over the last twenty years, continual league produces
high level talent that.
Speaker 2 (59:21):
Can at least play overseas at the highest levels.
Speaker 4 (59:25):
Absolutely, Ben, and that's something that you know. I'm glad.
And I don't remember who he was. I don't know
if it was Will Void or if it was a BD.
I don't remember exactly who it was.
Speaker 10 (59:36):
But you know, provo doesn't mean NBA because the NBA
is not the only way for you to make a
living playing basketball. Yours truly happened to be the living
proof of that. And so you know, it's it's a
place that you can come And I think that's the
type of that's the type of pitch that you can
give to a lot of the guys, you know who
(59:56):
happened to be maybe a three star or a four
star repreved, you know, typical guys that they may be
a rubber right in the making. You know that they
probably wouldn't be b YU type players in the first place.
But you're like, look, you can come here. You have
a chance to go make money overseas. You know, money
is money, doesn't matter if it's eros or if it's
rubies or if it's the dollars.
Speaker 4 (01:00:18):
Having the chance to know the world and to see
the world.
Speaker 10 (01:00:21):
And I'll tell you this then, to be exposed to
the b YU network, you know, to to the LDS
network around the world, it's a phenomenal thing. Obviously, Ben,
you've been around the world, you know, for as long
as we've known each other, you knew about you know
about the experiences I had, you know overseas with the
church with you know, different areas, you know, being a
(01:00:44):
part of the Rome Temple, and that process was.
Speaker 4 (01:00:46):
A blessing in our family. But it's a part of
the BYU connection.
Speaker 10 (01:00:50):
And once you're a part of this network, then you know,
as long as you don't do anything stupid, you're going
to be a part of it for the rest of
your life.
Speaker 2 (01:00:59):
Love that peron perspective.
Speaker 3 (01:01:00):
Love the comments from Jonathan Tabernari here on ESPN the
Fan real quick, give us some perspective on where mowat
mag Fustraer, and Trey Stewart are gonna be playing, Like,
what what are we seeing here?
Speaker 2 (01:01:13):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (01:01:13):
As far as location level of play, I think, uh,
what is with Karen's type hands fus And I'm not
I'm probably completely butchering the name Fustrare is with sig
Strasburg and then Trey Stewart with SBB Baskets.
Speaker 4 (01:01:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (01:01:33):
So I actually know the teams for for FOS and
for the teams for FOS and the teams for for
Trey really well, mainly because when you do pre season
in Europe, you go to random areas all of the
continent and you play there, and so Trey, you know,
Trey will be playing, you know, in the in the
second division in Germany and uh, you know it's a
(01:01:56):
solid team and as you know, your Europeans have relegation
and promotion and so these are teams that you know,
I look at look at Excelius, who was able to
literally go from you know, rags to riches and now
he is going to be a euro League player.
Speaker 4 (01:02:12):
And we got to see.
Speaker 10 (01:02:13):
You know, Zach playing you know with the YU team,
in practicing with them, and.
Speaker 4 (01:02:17):
So uh Pray has a chance to really build a
career there. And he's going to.
Speaker 10 (01:02:20):
Start from a place that would expect a law from him.
You know, you're coming in as an America and you
best delivered or they will send you home very quickly.
Speaker 4 (01:02:30):
Fus is expected to contribute right away.
Speaker 10 (01:02:32):
I know that just because of the type of team
he's going to and also because of who he is.
Speaker 4 (01:02:38):
And you know, I'm not one hundred percent sure.
Speaker 10 (01:02:40):
Charles Abul who confirmed that maybe Fus because of his
you know, African roots, he may be able to play
as like Katonu, which is an agreement that which is
an agreement that France has with African African countries, which
(01:03:00):
is stem from their times as colonies. And so soosi
expected to contribute right away. That's a team that you know,
used to be in.
Speaker 4 (01:03:08):
The euro League, euro Cup.
Speaker 10 (01:03:10):
You know, plays on, plays on a lot of a
lot of different high level leagues. Mag I believe is
going back to Australia and uh you know he is
going to play at at almost like a home league
for him.
Speaker 4 (01:03:26):
But you know, don't don't sleep on the Australian League.
Speaker 10 (01:03:29):
If you remember, that's where LaMelo Ball went to perfect
his game before joining the NBA. That's a very up
and that's a very up and coming league. It's a
place where a lot, a lot of a lot of kids.
You know, just before the n I L D n
I L wave hit college, a lot of kids were
going to Australia to be able to get paid and
(01:03:51):
develop their game. And so these guys are off to
incredible leagues, incredible leagues, right I personally, you know, in
all my conversations with Track, I thought that he was
going to be able to get and he may still
he may still have an opportunity to do what Spencer
Johnson you know, is doing. We're going to a league
that's not very well known, although it is London, but
(01:04:12):
the British League, you know, it's I mean, it is.
Speaker 4 (01:04:15):
Very very very very very low on the total pole.
Speaker 10 (01:04:20):
But nonetheless, Spencer Johnson had a fantastic year and he's
able to build himself and so I hope that that
Trevin Nell had an opportunity to do that as well.
Speaker 4 (01:04:28):
And then obviously you know our boy Jegor. You know
our boy Yegor shining in the NBA. This is impressive. Guys.
Speaker 10 (01:04:36):
You know my senior year, my senior year, obviously you
know I signed a three year deal to go to
Italy to go to europe Cup team, and.
Speaker 4 (01:04:45):
Then Lamar didn't have a really a chance to go.
Speaker 10 (01:04:48):
Chris Miles went to Germany and so, uh but Ben,
to your point, U Yu, guys been doing this year
after a year, and Ben, I'll never forget this. We
were at the Thanksgiving Force Golf studios. You were having
an Arnold Palmer, which I had no idea what it
was at the time, and uh, I remember having a
(01:05:08):
conversation with Brian Keele and Brian Kell said something about
about football, about football teams going far and having a success,
and Brian Kle said, if you have a QB that's
a pro QB, your team is going to do well.
And what Brian meant by that is, as long as
you have you have a QB, that will you know,
we'll get Bade to play professional football, be it in
(01:05:31):
Canada being as a as a as a practice squad guy.
But if he played, if he gets paid to b
a QB, you're gonna be okay. And that stuck with
me because that's the same thing about B y U basketball.
As long as you have pros in your team, you're
gonna be fine. Then go look at the times and
the seasons that b YU has had incredible years. Greatest
(01:05:52):
season is BYU history is the one with Danny Ainge,
who is you know, considered one of the greatest, one
of the top five white boys to ever play basketball
in the history of the NBA. And then he also
had Michael Smith, and he had Andy Toolson, and he
had Devin Durant.
Speaker 4 (01:06:11):
And he had Jeff Chatman.
Speaker 10 (01:06:12):
He had all of these guys that ended up playing professionally.
And then you look at you look at you know,
the back to back thirty win seasons, which has never
been done in YU history. You know, when you go
back to my senior year and then Jimmermania and then
you had me, you had Jim Er, you had Charles Abuoh,
you had Noah Hartsoft, you had at Morgan. You know,
(01:06:35):
the list goes on and on about people that played
professional basketball. And then you had Kyle Collinsworth in that
team as well, who became an NBA player. As long
as you have more than two, as long as you
have three or four pros in a college team, and
he doesn't mean if it's NBA or Europe. As long
as you have four pros in your team, you should
(01:06:57):
have a good season. And when you look at the
roster this year, Ben, they probably have about seven or
eight pros at least.
Speaker 3 (01:07:04):
Love that breakdown that only Jonathan Tabinari can give. Make
sure you're following him on x and try to connect
