season Baby, that means trench warfare is and live and well.
The best offensive and defensive lines win championships, but they
can't do that if they're not healthy and strong, nourished

(00:50):
and strengthened and braced up and supported in the joints,
the knees, the ankles, the wrist, the elbows.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Brace up today, don't just tape that.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Gets loose as you, uh, as you, as you exercise,
as you get sweaty, make sure you got braces that
support those joints. Today at Orthopros of Utah and American Ford.
All right, let's get out to the hot line. Welcome
at Cougar Sports in Sadder representing the Desert News.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
We got the one, the only j drew on the line.
What's up?

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Jay? Uh? Not a lot. It's beautiful day and beautiful
day in provo for practice and uh it was really uh,
I thought really really good segments to draw a lot
from today.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
So it's all good, the gems, the takeaways.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
What did you see from this Cougar football team that
stood out to you today?

Speaker 1 (01:41):
You know, I'm uh, I don't want to give away
what I'll be writing about today, but it it just
a little bit and that's it. It looks like Bear
Bockmeier is taking taking a kind of a step forward.
It's that was my biggest takeaway is he made some
beautiful throws. One to uh Carson ra that was I
mean nfl asque. Really it was a beautiful throw. And

(02:06):
you know, you guys are there, you saw it. I'm sure,
and I just that's just the biggest takeaway as I
it just looks like and judging what Aaron Rodericks said afterwards, Uh,
it looks like Barry Bauckmeyern might be dare we say,
in the lead in this quarterback derby. But that's kind
of my take. You know, maybe opinions may vary across

(02:28):
the board, but that's what it looked like to me
for certain.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of
trotting out a true freshman, you know, as the starting
quarterback at b YU.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
Well, the pros I think would be if you want
to look for maybe next year, if you might might
want to say, well, this year, you know, we would
dealt the bombshell with the Jake Rretz left thing, and
and maybe this isn't quite our year, but we can
develop you know him, and obviously he's the guy with
the biggest upside, the big ceiling, highest ceiling, so that

(03:03):
would be the pros, he's the better athlete. It looks
like he's taller than the other guys. The cons would
obviously be he's a freshman. No one really knows what
he's going to do when you know when he's facing
you know, a Big twelve defense or maybe even a
Stanford defense in week two, So you know, does he

(03:24):
know the playbook? Does he have a grasp of the plays?
If he's in there? Do you have to cut it out?
Aaron Roderick loves you know, he calls him specials or
trick plays, gadgets, and do you have to take those out?
Do you have to you know, lighten it a little bit?
The one word that I keep going back to, and
I was reading some of the stuff I wrote before

(03:46):
in Last Quarterback Battles, and that's the word poise. Aaron
Roderick wants to know which of these guys has the
most poised under pressure. And I think you've seen that
with the pass rush and talk then talking about what
are these guys going to do when we go live
even though they can't be hit yet. And it just
seems to me watching and what I've seen is that

(04:10):
that Bart Bockmeyer hasn't really a lot of poise. He
reminds me a little bit of Zach Wilson when Zach
came up as a freshman and I broke into the
starting lineup. Just that kind of that poise where he
doesn't panic, he doesn't overthrow a guy out of the
backfield like we saw today, you know, miss a guy

(04:30):
by three feet. That sort of thing goes a long way.
So yeah, I know I'm rambling a little bit, but
that's kind of what I what I I've kind of seen,
and or the pros and cons of going with the freshmen.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Love the breakdown from Jay Drew talking from BYU Cougar
football camp. Kalani bear Bogbyer may have taken a step
in the direction of a starting quarterback, and so bear
Bachmeyer is U is quickly becoming a fan fav You know,
there's some pomp and circumstance surrounding him, his name, his ara,

(05:05):
his demeanor, number forty seven on the football play. We
have never seen a quarterback where the number forty seven.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
I think it'd be what you football is, hister.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
I don't even know if there's a starting quarterback in
college football history that wore the number forty seven.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
Yeah, very interesting, and he talked about that a couple
of practices go about why he's on that number. He
grew up kind of playing a combination of some running
back and some linebacker, and he thinks that number I
think he called it brings out his basic instincts or
something to that EF factor. I can't remember that thatch

(05:42):
word was, but kind of more of a physical, hard
nos football player, which I think is what he wants
to be known as.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Love that.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
What else is standing out to you about this BYU
football team? And let me ask you this as well
as a follow up, what's this ceiling and what's the
floor for the regular season?

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Do you think for this team?

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Yeah, one thing that stood out to me from what
is Carson Ryan's really good if they can get him
the ball, he stays on his feet, he catches the ball,
he gets open. I love his stride. He just looked
for a big guy. He just he looks like a
prototypical BYU tight end of the past. And last year
they had to do it by committee as everyone knows.

(06:27):
And think I think he's going to be a big
weapon this year. So that's one thing that stood out
as far as the floor and the ceiling. You know me,
I hate to make predictions, you know, I think the
ceiling is maybe nine wins. I based out on the schedule,
on the quarterback situation, kind of a best case scenario

(06:49):
that I think the floor is probably five wins, probably
a little bit of a repeat of twenty seventeen or
I mean years ago was twenty twenty three season. So yeah,
I would say in between five and nine wins, kind
of Florida ceilings.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
There you go, J Drew breaking it down here on
your Utah ESPN Radio Network. By the way, college football
talk is always.

Speaker 2 (07:16):

Speaker 1 (07:30):
Oh, I like it all any kind of ice cream.
But yeah, since they're a sponsor, absolutely Robins all the way, right, We'll.

Speaker 3 (07:38):
Get you a free ice cream over at Baskin Robbins
so you can try all thirty one flavors today, Jay
Drew talking to College Football here on your Utah ESPN
Radio network. So, Jay, are you confident as confident as
Aaron Roderick is that they can establish the run game.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
We've heard this before. A rodd has said, Hey, well
we're gonna be able to run the ball.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
Are you believing what Aaron Roderick is believing right now
that b Yu is going to be able to run
the ball effectively this season?

Speaker 1 (08:08):
Yeah, I'm gonna have to go. The jury's still out
on that. I mean, it's running the ball in fall camp.
It's you know, sometimes guys can be tackled. Sometimes they can't,
you know, all the all the rules and stuff. Uh
So I'm I'm I don't know yet. I've heard it before.
I've made a vow this season that I wasn't gonna
pump up the offense and line until they actually did

(08:29):
something in a game. I'm trying to hold to that.
G Man. I used to talk choke with him a
lot about that. So, uh And obviously they're a huge
key to the to the run games. So I will
say this, l J. Martin looks good. He just looks
great actually in practice, and what we've seen of him

(08:50):
just ought his body the way he's more chiseled. He
looks like in you know, an RB one and then
a guy, uh, it's ready to get up twenty five
carries a game if if need be, so I'll kind
of take. I'll hedge a little and take and say
that if they stay healthy, if they those two main

(09:11):
running backs and LJ. Martin stay healthy, I think they
can run the ball effectively. But I'll hedge and say
that both guys were injured a little bit last year,
and so they have that track record level.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
Of optimism that Hinkley roll plot he receives his waiver
from the NCAA and that he can become an RB two,
RB three and be in that running back rotation.

Speaker 1 (09:36):
Yeah, that's a tough one anytime you try to predict
the NCAA and all that. I just think the longer
it goes, the lesser the chances. I just from what
we've seen in the past, it seems like and other
athletes across other sports like basketball, the longer these things
go and then the bad news is delivered, you know,

(09:56):
kind of closer to the season or whatever. I'm a
little pessimistic as far as that's concerned, but so that
I don't have any insight source or anything like that.
I'm just kind of going by past history and I
would just tell people not to get their hopes up,
and then if it is, it's you know, it's a
kind of a blessing kind of comes along.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
Later, you mentioned Carson Ryan's really stood out to you.
Aaron Roderick stated that Carson Ryan can do it all.
I think his position coach as well. Gilbrid said he
can do it all. He's just a well rounded tight end.
The last tight end that could do it all per
Aaron Roderick was Isaac Rex run blocking, pass blocking, running

(10:40):
great routes, good catching, radio radius, et cetera. Inline and
flexed tight end ability, has the the inability to get
the tight end the ball been over the last few
years been more? You know, can you attribute it more
to the personnel scheme quarterback? When you analyze that, what

(11:04):
do you see what's the issue in getting the tight
end the ball?

Speaker 1 (11:10):
I think it's part part of Aaron Rodericks's scheme. I
don't think that's a priority to him or hasn't been.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
Maybe is that more personnel related then, because like you know,
he says Isaac Rex, could do it all right, and
he he did get a lot of touchdowns. You know,
he wasn't like a thousand yard receiver, but I mean
he was always you know, competitive and productive.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
I would say pre injury, Isaac Rex could do it all.
I think he never fully one percent recovered from the
injury at USC so twenty twenty three when they struggled
a little bit, and you know they that wasn't the
full Isaac Rex. I don't think we saw everything, but
I think they tried to stay loyal to him, and

(11:52):
because of all he had gone through to get back
that they used him a lot, but they didn't they
didn't go to him a lot. And then last year was,
like we said, by committee, and I think last year
was a personnel thing. I don't think they really had
a tight end one that they really really felt comfortable with,
and so they maybe moved away from throwing to the

(12:13):
tight end as much as you know. The key onu
Hill experiment was it was it didn't work. It just
did not work and for whatever reason and kind of
left them where they were.

Speaker 3 (12:29):
Jay Drew, Deseret News Cougar Sports insider talking some college football,
bau football here and a Cougar Be brought to you
by Orthropos of Utah Orthroposoutah dot com. Jay, you didn't
want to tease this with an article, but what have
you written that we can read on the Deseret News
and what can we read maybe in the future.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
Yeah, I'm obviously gonna probably jump into something on the
quarterback deal again today. And then I got something coming
up on Justin Kirkler and uh and kind of what
he brings and he's probably won't play in this opener,
is what he tells me. But but just kind of
a feature on him. And then I got a really
really big piece on kind of like what b Yu's

(13:14):
placed in this brave new world of college football and
whether kind of exploring whether or not b why you
can maintain its identity, its culture, what it's known for, uh,
what it's made it successful on the football field in
this brand new day and age of transferport or ni L,
revenue sharing and whatnot. And so that that piece will

(13:37):
be coming out at the end of the week. And obviously,
as you know, Ben, I interviewed you for it and
I hope people like it.

Speaker 3 (13:44):
Yeah, you know, Jay, I said, Jay, I'll give you
a quote but don't make me look yeah, don't make
id the pontificate and and just meld ideas together in
a chaotic and uh you know, schizophrenic way. So I
appreciate you you helping me out with the quotes.

Speaker 1 (14:03):
Well, I'll do my best. It hasn't hit the printing
presses yet, so I hope you like it.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
All right, Jay, appreciate you man, Thanks for joining us today.

Speaker 1 (14:12):
