Nationally we Got, Burgess Owens. Burgess how the heck are, you, Brother.

Speaker 4 (02:24):
I'm doing great. Appreciating you mentioned running through a, wall
and that's called. Youth when you're, young you think like.
That so enjoy the, process, buddy enjoy why you can for. Sure,
No i'm excited about to sitt that with.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
You, No, no, hey you rad through some walls back
in the day, too, Right, yeah you know sometimes you,
know you have to learn through that.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
Process you think you're invincible when you're.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
Younger, Well i'll tell you.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
When WHEN i decided to retire at age thirty, two
one of the reasons WAS i didn't feel like doing
that a whole lot anymore because at some point started
hurt a little bit. More but, anyway it was a
good time to. Play i'm so excited about, that and
look for the chat with you a little bit about
what the Old raders used to be and the culture we,
developed BECAUSE i think we're trying to get back to
that in a bigger, way.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
No doubt about.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
IT i remember WATCHING i can check, TAPE i can
pull up the great thing about the digital ERAS i
can pull up burgers owing highlights on YouTube now and
you picking off passes taking it to the.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
House what did you learn and what did you enjoy.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
About your football career your football process from high school
to college to the national.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Football what a good question and loaded.

Speaker 4 (03:28):
Question i'll start by by first of all individual and
then about the. CULTURE i was one of those, guys
was very, introverted very, quiet was never never wanted to
actually get up and talk in front of, people BUT
i always wanted to be considered. Leader my goals be
a captain one day high school in college than the.
Pros and the only WAY i can see doing that

(03:48):
is just get on the field and. Hustle i'll hustle.
Everybody SO i learned number one that you can have
and have a. Theory you cannot control the school, board
but you can't control the. Hustle and that's WHAT i
learned through the. Process and of course at some point
you start getting confidence in some areas that that that
terrollor is into other. Things so the CONFERENCES i learned
by just being individual learning through merit learn that you.

(04:09):
Can you can command respect if you work hard. Enough
if you do the hard, things run toward the fear
by the, way that's WHAT i that's WHAT i really.
Appreciate but our first first, responders our, veterans they run
toward the field and. Fear and that's that says a
lot because you have to learn how to do. THAT
i would say that was the individual. PROCESS i will
always always be thankful of the chance that had a

(04:29):
chance to play, sports to understand the team, worked, loyalty
all those kind of. Things the other part of, It,
uh in terms of The, RAIDERS i can't can't go
to a little different. Time Al davis was quite different
than the rest of the. League he was a. Maverick
uh when he, said just win, baby that's all he cared.
About he was a, genius but it came down to
his egos based on, winning not not the aviance of

(04:50):
being an, owner not to, travel not the. Vacations he
would spend all his time to look at talent and
make sure that his team was affecting Al davis as a,
Man and it was great to be part of that
because one THING i learned AND i saw then THAT
i appreciate about our. COUNTRY i was that guy before
free agency that he would you, know there are guys
in the league that were too old to reg, boxes too,

(05:12):
crazy too well for any other, team and those are our.
Guys that was just right for The raiders because he
knew that bringing guys like that who knew how to,
work who knew how to put everything into, it might
have different, personalities but if you can get them to
think about a culture of just, winning he'd get the
very best out of. It and many of us who
got there were just so proud to be part of that,
organization that culture that would give anything we want to

(05:32):
make sure that we were adding to the, team not that.
Subtracting SO i would say that was one of the
greatest Lessons i've. LEARNED i played for ten, years seven
years of The, jets and unfortunately just to do it
exactly forty years. Ago what they're doing today can't figure
out how to make that. Happen but The raiders was
a time WHEN i walked in the, FIELD i knew
that everybody's going to do their. Job it was up
to me to do. Mine and anybody's been part of

(05:53):
a team knows that what that's. SUPPORTS i, like if
you could do your, part look at the film and
realize that you did not let the team. Down nobody
felt the same. Way it's going to lead to. Momentum
it's going to lead to, belief faith in each, other
and a lot of fun and good stories later on in.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
Life for shore doubt about.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
It it's a, brotherhood whether in you, know in the
high school, level the collegiate, level or in The National Football.
League each each has its individual. Brotherhood and the memories
that you create and the lessons.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
You learn do.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Translate how how have they translated to your modern endeavors
as a as a as a, politician as a, converssman
as a as an advocate for your your your community
and your population that you.

Speaker 4 (06:36):
Represent i'm gonna Do i'm gonna answer, that BUT i
want to start off with a company made about. Brotherhood
for athletes that are, listening recognize it's something that you
experience in this process that's gonna be hard to explain
later in, life because at some point we go off
and do our own, Thing we go out and build
out families out whatever it is that moment where you
have a commitment to work, out to go through a
lot of pain to go through the sacrifice you're gonna

(06:58):
add to a. Team and then even if it might
not be a, starter but you know you're participating adding.
Value there's something about that that will be, life life
landing along lifelong. Lasting i'm not right now planning on
going back to A uh to catch with some of
my high school. BUDDIES, uh and it's interest because we
haven't seen each other, years but it's something about those

(07:19):
years who went THROUGH uh years and years. Ago i've
went from high school The college of pro and Yet
i'm looking at hanging out by my high school budies
because we have some good so many good. Memories so
that that's that's the one part of IT i would
say in terms of WHAT i, LEARNED, uh sports bright
of way is as a character building process if you
look at it the right, Way if you if you

(07:41):
realize that you truly are getting in, shape not one for,
yourself but to participate and TO uh to get that merit.
Process you realize that you're gonna be your very best
because that's the only way you gonna be, chosen and
you kind of command. Respect and that allowed me to UNDERSTAND.
Uh as you go through anything in, life it's the
Same prince Suppos it's, hustled it's, commitment it's. Loyalty uh

(08:04):
is working with a team of guys that you. STILL i,
Mean i'll tell you, What i'll go back old. School
i'm back old. School, WELL i love to shake somebody's
hand and know that that is that is their. Word
now it's a little tougher to find that. Nowadays but
if you ever find, it, boy you really you really
treasure because it's something that that titans that brotherhood you talked, About,
Uh AND i think the most important, THING, uh it's

(08:24):
it's the concept of empathy that really makes our country
what it.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
Is.

Speaker 4 (08:29):
Uh you go through really hard times of, guys and
sometimes it's, winning sometimes it's, losing but whatever you are
going through it together and that little bit of empathy
allows you to commit and and find and find relationships
that actually will help you later on in life, too
because it's it's the feeling that once you get, it
you want to continue to to, uh to reach out
for it and find in other.

Speaker 1 (08:48):
Places ON, espn the Fan burgess reflecting back on YOUR nfl, Career,
yeah who's the best, player the most impactful most dynamic,
player most dominant player you got to either play with
or against in The National Football.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
LEAGUE i was very. FORTUNATE i played with some very
good talented. PEOPLE. O.

Speaker 4 (09:08):
J simpson Of, Larazanka Earl. CAMPBELL i can go through
The lindum. Guys but the guy that REALLY i had
so much respect for Was Walter. Payton and if you ever,
look have a chance to go back and See Walter pate, sweetness,
sweetness what he did was no other player.

Speaker 2 (09:24):
Did he brought punishment to what was coming at.

Speaker 4 (09:27):
Him and the fact, is because you think about the
other GUYS i just, MENTIONED oj was was, fastest, slick
so you kind of knew he was gonnary to get
away with from. You Earl campbell was a guy who
can try to run over. You so you grab a
egg and hold on to your friends and can show
up and help. Out, Uh walter made that decision when
he got to. You either he's gonna give your forearms
and knock your helmet, off or he's gonna do your

(09:48):
juke and get around you try to speed. It so
it was uh you had to kind of put on
your your steady. Habits what is he gonna do this?
Time and uh and then hold. On but a lot
of respect for that guy and and a lot of
respect for that group that came.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
Through at that.

Speaker 4 (10:02):
Time CAN i say this is something about THE nfl
in those days that they'll always always, Remember and it
was because it was produced by the greatest. Generation my
dad's generation Was World war two vat. Yep the dad
was A World war TWO. VET i grew up in
a home that respected our, flags respected the, sacrifice the
fact that these guys, ran these young people eighteen nineteen

(10:22):
twenty years, old that ran to, fear ran toward their,
dead whatever it. Is and because of, that they came
back with a different way of thinking about their. Country Number,
one they're proud of the country because they. Won the
ego was. Lifted they had an uplifting a little bit
of a step because they did things that really saved our,
world and they came back respected by our fellow. Citizens

(10:45):
then not only did they come back and build the
biggest middle class in the history of, mankind but they
started breaking down the walls that was going on around
during that time in.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
The fifteen and.

Speaker 4 (10:52):
Sixties SO i respect that cammaraderie that came from that
respect even guys who never met each, other you knew
somebody was in a particular place fighting at the same
tange time you're. Fighting there was an instant brotherhood and
it really didn't matter what color it, was which is
why the walls began to break down during that, era
because there's respect for folks to see, courage understand what it.

(11:14):
Is and here's the other. Pieces something that we didn't.
Realize we didn't realize that when things happened in that,
environment that guys bring it home with. Him we had
no idea the impact it has when you see and
do things and also just moving on with life and,
thinking you, know just man, up move. On but but
they were folks who came. Back now we recognize, that

(11:35):
and that's Why i'm so thankful whenever we have those
h those, people, individuals corporations who understand our first responders
and they don't just leave everything at, work the ore
the ones that have to take it home and and
uh and So i'm always appreciative. THAT i think here In,
utah because we're very service, culture we get. It So

(11:57):
i'm excited that we're we're seeing that for what it.

Speaker 1 (11:59):
Is you speak to a number of dynamics that are very.
INTERESTING i, mean we haven't seen a movement of like
enmity towards. Country it sponders all those. Things you, know
there's been kind of this growing population that Demonizes wait
a second, here you mentioned the greatest generation that built

(12:21):
kind of, this this platform that we take for, granted this,
foundation the socioeconomic, success all of these things that we
we receive these, fruits we take it for granted and
then demonize the.

Speaker 3 (12:32):
Past like wait a second, Here we've got to have
a little bit.

Speaker 1 (12:34):
More gratitude here and really understand our history and have
that gratitude is imperative for. Happiness if you want to
see the most unhappy, people they are the ones that
lack the. Gratitude they only demonize the. Past they don't
see all the positive fruits of the past and the
people that came before.

Speaker 4 (12:52):
Us i'll, say this is The american way to, have
This american way to have big. Dreams of, course we
can be, attacked were can be told that that that's
not none of that us is all. Good but in
the day we come back to those basic tenants that
really make us who we. Are and WHEN i talked
about the, generation what was the result of that generation

(13:12):
that began THE.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
Nfl you go back and see all the.

Speaker 4 (13:16):
Owners you See Al, Davis uh when when he was
he was a youth during that, time a teenager at that.
Time what did that translate to on the? Field pride
in our, COUNTRY a flag that. Flew, UH i, saw,
guys we all get teary Eyed washington At Star Spangled
bantner because now only did we appreciate that, generation that

(13:37):
what had been done to get us, there but just
the opportunity we're sitting here living in our. Dream it's
so important to to recognize when you're living your, dream
no matter how times can still be little, hiccups you're
living your dream.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
Appreciated.

Speaker 4 (13:51):
Uh you might lose this particular, game, mister particular bacle,
battle but We're, americans and guess, what we can dust
ourselves off and go all over. Again that's that's really
what it comes to. To SO i appreciate it that.
GENERATION i appreciate the founders of THE nfl that began
that league with, patriotism, pride, merit and that merit is

(14:12):
what brought.

Speaker 2 (14:18):
You on the.

Speaker 4 (14:18):
Field you don't care what the coultor. Is just like
you're on the, battlefield you could care. Less you want to,
survive you want to. Win and if somebody brings value
to that, process, man you're going to high Five patom
on the back to become. Brothers so that is actually
WHAT i think the entire sports process that we have
to continue to remember and hold on to. It we
can't let we can't let folks who do not appreciate our, cot.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
The drive and. Dividus we cannot afford to let that.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
Happen you speak the gratitude melting pod of you're supporting

not for profit nonprofit organization helping first responders suffering FROM, ptsd, depression,
trauma and. Addiction why are you so passionate about helping

(15:29):
the first?

Speaker 4 (15:29):
Responders you know, AGAIN i go back to the greatest
BLESSING i had with some fantastic, parents to the COMMUNITY
i grew up in the sixties where there was community
of feats came back just want to serve their.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
COUNTRY i served the.

Speaker 4 (15:42):
Community SO i, think keep in mind and every time
there's a, disaster anytime there's, fear there are people who
run away with, it one from it with most of,
us and there are people who have the, Mindset i'm
going to run as fast AS i can to. IT
i respect, that AND i think all countries should also respect. It,
police our first, responders our, firemen whoever they, are that

(16:03):
goes and make make sure our, country our community is.
Safe that we take things for, granted that we get
get up and get in our car and go to
work and come back and go to a. Game we
take that for. Granted, well only only is done that
way because they have people who don't take for. Granted
they get out, there they put on their uniforms and
they go out there and they deal with issues every single.
Day hoping that they get back home and sometimes most

(16:23):
times they, do but sometimes they. Don't and that's what
we have to make sure we appreciate and support whenever
we can our first.

Speaker 1 (16:30):
Responders Burgess, owns ladies and, gentlemen blessing pleasure having you.
Here it's event tonight and any last message to our
our listeners on this fantastic.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
Recognize that there will be times it's gonna be. Tough
get back up.

Speaker 4 (16:51):
Again that's one thing we learn in, sports AND i
will say that that our military understands The Thames.

Speaker 2 (16:56):
Uh the key is to keep moving.

Speaker 4 (16:58):
Forward and IF i can say that my team deals
with very simply AND i learned this over. Time we
cannot control the school, board we can control the.

Speaker 2 (17:06):
Hustle hustle through.

Speaker 4 (17:08):
Life do it, right treat what people, right have a,
vision have a, Dream always get up when you get knocked.
Down that will allow you to be excited by the
time your life is done with and it's come to that.
Point what is the legacy is when people speaking in
that way that means it was a great life and
you di good.

Speaker 2 (17:22):

Speaker 1 (17:23):
Wisdom pontificating on our, Airwaves Burgess owens ladies and gentlemen
