Speaker 1 (04:22):
We have a ton of great interviews that we're going
to welcome into the show, some.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
High profile people.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Blaine Fowler gonna join us at three to h five,
former Cougar quarterback who's on BYU TV, as well as
the wise guys. He's going to delve into this quarterback competition.
Why is it that Bear Bachmeyer, you know, should or
shouldn't get the job? What are the pros and cons
of trotting out a true freshman quarterback for the beginning

(04:49):
of the season Portland State Stanford. You got a bye week,
You see you on the road? Call right on the road.
It gets a little bit tough after that bye week?
Can the Bear the Bachmeyer? Can he win his way
through that that that those first six games are so
prior and get ready for the refining fire of a
holy war?

Speaker 3 (05:08):
The holy war is.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
Game seven, the perfect number according to the Hebrews. Will
it be a perfect number for Cougar nation? Will b
yu three p? Will they give Kyle Whittingham three losses
in a row? Forcing Kyle Whittingham to come back for
another year to try to end his career at the
University of Utah.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
With a W and I am of the opinion, I
am of the theory. And JB.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
I don't know how you feel about this, but Kyle
Whittingham shall not, will not retire until he beats Brigham
Young University one last time.

Speaker 3 (05:44):
He's got to go out on a high note. Agree
or disagree.

Speaker 4 (05:48):
Yeah, it's hard to imagine him taken off after he's
lost that many in a row. He's too competitive for
a three pat Yeah, he's got a he got a
three peat l you know on his resume.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
He ain't gonna do that.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
No, he's too competitive. If I think you're right, I
think he comes back if he loses again.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
So he's hired a new OC up there, But that
new OC he's gonna go, gonna go up against the
top twenty five defense.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
But a true freshman in.

Speaker 1 (06:14):
A holy war that doesn't always turn out all that well, right,
Like historically speaking, holy wars with true freshmen, you don't
want the true freshman on your roster starting in that game,
even if it's at home. If it's at home, great,
Yeah it's a little bit better. But you know, bear Bachmeyer.
If he's the guy, if he's the dude, if he
earns the job per Aaron Rodert, Feshi, Matt Mitchell Kolani.

(06:38):
You know that pie chart of decision makers, if you will.
If par gets that start man, man, he's he's gonna
have a that may be the most difficult game that
he experiences all season long, with the top twenty five
defense on the opposite side. But at least Bear is

(06:58):
going to facing our opinion, a top twenty five defense, right,
So we'll discuss that with Blaine Fowler. By the way,
I did put out a statut at the day, brought
to you by our good friends at Batterwealth Banterwealth dot
com get on a free q and a O obligation
too with best QNA, with attacks more wealth advisors certify
financial planners. Nobody does it better than Blaine Anderson and
his crew. I put this stat out here and maybe
you did. You knew this, maybe you didn't. Bya Football's

(07:21):
final ESPN SP plus ranking and rankings from twenty twenty four,
b Way's offense actually came in with an efficiency rating
of thirty six in the country. I think a lot
of people are surprised by that. They figured it would
be a middle of the.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
Pack efficiency rating.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
BoA's defense was twenty first in the nation and special
teams were fourth in the nation. I would say the
ranking that is the biggest surprise to many is the
fact that that Bay's office with thirty six overall. All,
those three metrics combined put BAU seventeenth in the country.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
Pretty good nine season last year.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
Can you replicate that with a true freshman quarterback at
the helm? Can you get back to top forty top
forty offense in the country with a true freshman quarterback
because you had a top twenty five defense last year
and a top five special teams unit, which one is
most replicable, most likely to be replicated this year? With

(08:24):
this schedule for six games, look winnable. Last six games
our last you know, I guess the four to the
last six games looked very, very difficult. Don't be surprised
if BYU goes eight and four this year with a
true freshman quarterback, and they shouldn't be weeping and wailing and.

Speaker 3 (08:43):
Nashing their teeth if that is what occurs.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
At any rate, I'm gonna have a number of former
Cougars on the show today, including Blaine Fowler. Alemma Harrington,
one of my favorite people on the Earth, is going
to be joining us as well. We had a show together,
this show for three years. I mean, it was tremendous.
It was awesome, a magical time in my life where

(09:07):
I got to hang out with one of the best
individuals on Earth and a fantastic former Cougar one of
the most dynamic in front of a camera or in
front of a microphone.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
Alema Harrington will join us at four twenty.

Speaker 1 (09:19):
Matt Bellini, former BYU great out of the backfield joining us.
One of the best receiving running backs slash wide receivers.

Speaker 3 (09:26):
He could do it all for you back in the
day at four fifty.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
Purchase Owens, former NFL great, now politician and active in
the community making an impact Burgess ocil just at five twenty.
Jason Buck at five point fifty Outland Trophy winner, baller
shot collar one of the best in the basin. Hope
we can get him a little bit earlier than that
so we can have more time to discuss Cougar football
with him. But I'm sure he likes the new scheme

(09:54):
being employed down there at BYU we'll discuss it with
him here on your Utah ESPN Radio Network nine ninety
eight point three ESPN. The fan, guys, let's get into
this quarterback competition. Let's get into the nitty gritty always
brought to you by Complete Circuit Electric, Complete Circuit Electric
utah dot Com.

Speaker 5 (10:10):
Gentlemen, well, please present our dances with their interpretation of
the nitty gritty You went to went to.

Speaker 6 (10:22):

Speaker 3 (11:06):
You will not be disappointed in his.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
Products, his service, or the discounts he provides to all
of Cougar Nation completely are gonna like a utah dot
com all right, you know, it's always interesting to me.
We can talk with coordinators, we can talk with with
quarterbacks themselves. I always find it interesting to get the
opinion of the offensive line as to who the quarterbacks are,

(11:31):
what they do well, and maybe a little insight into
the quarterback competition. Andrew Gentry one of the leaders of
this team, Michigan transfer, former four star recruit. You can
make it argue he's a four star, five star tackle
transfer to Brigham Young University. Started at Michigan last year

(11:51):
before his Liz Fronk injury. He's a national champion. He
opined on the quarterback competition and broke down the individual
skill sets what he likes about each and everyone of
Jerem Jordan from BAU TV was interviewing him. Let's listen
in What did Andrew Gentry have to say about these
three quarterbacks.

Speaker 3 (12:07):
McKay hill said. McKay hill said, just a great athlete.

Speaker 7 (12:10):
You know, he comes out there and there's instant respect
for him and he knows what he's doing. But then
also he can make plays with his feet really really well.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
So he's done some really great things.

Speaker 7 (12:18):
Ray Borg Trayson Bourgate knows the offense really really well.
He's a super smart quarterback, super smart player, so I
know that when he's there, he's gonna get us in
the right spot. And it's no hesitation on his part
as well. And then Bear buckmer It, Barry, he's just
he's really smartest in general too. I mean, you see,
you know, I've been around some really good quarterbacks, and
as a true freshman, I don't know if I've seen
somebody quite like Bear with just how advanced he is,

(12:40):
how well he knows the offense, how fast he's picked
it up, and just the confidence he has too, you know,
and he's back there behind us and he comes in
with the ones. There's no you know, there's no stoppage,
there's no hesitation from him. He's just out there slinging
the rock and doing what he does best. And you know,
that's huge for a freshman because I think a lot
of times that's the biggest curve is just the speed
of the game and understanding of the game. And Bear
has just picked that up right, and there's no drop

(13:00):
off when he's.

Speaker 3 (13:03):
No drop off when Bear Bachmeyer's in.

Speaker 1 (13:06):
I've never seen these are these could be construed as hyperbole.
I've never seen a true freshman quarterback, come in and
be up to speed, be as competent, be as competitive
as Bear Bachmeyer and Andrew Gentry's been around the block.
He's seen a lot of football, no doubt about it.
But is that are you buying or selling that rhetoric

(13:29):
right now? I think most of kugrenation is buying that rhetoric.
They're all in on Bear, They're all in on the
bach Meyer. McKay's been in the program for a while now.
If he has not captured the hearts of the locker room,
if the locker room is not pushing, pulling a pining

(13:50):
on his behalf, then you may have to resort to
starting a true refreshment quarterback.

Speaker 3 (13:57):
That is not an idealic situation.

Speaker 1 (13:59):
By the way, this is not an ideal situation to
be starting a true freshman quarter I don't know how
many stars are behind whose name, his resume, his productivity.
It's not an ideal situation. The ideal situation was playing
Jake Redslock this season and then having a nice QB
two battle between Trason McKay and Bear, and it would

(14:19):
have turned out that it was McKay versus Bear in
that QB two battle, but not so fast. I will
say this much. I know he hasn't been talked about.
I know no one's really opined on Emerson Goleman. But
I have been extremely impressed with Emerson Goleman at every
single practice in which I've been able to watch him
get reps.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
He is smart, he is intuitive, he is.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
Agile, he is fast, he is big, he is strong,
and I was actually impressed with his decision making how
quickly he got through his reads. Now is he gonna
cept this year? Most likely not. But I'll tell you what,
I've been as impressed with Emerson as I have been

(15:00):
with with McKay at times. And I think the first
week of the quarterback competition, what I think happened, what
I've been told has happened. You know, Tracon and Bear
probably threw too many interceptions, and McKay was managing because
I think McKay's coachable, and he's been told you got
to manage the game, you got to manage the offense,

(15:20):
you got to manage So he probably didn't push the
field the ball downfield as much. I don't see McKay
in any of the highlights pushing the ball downfield.

Speaker 3 (15:28):
Is that architectural.

Speaker 1 (15:30):
Is that schematic or is that his decision making that's
a little bit safer, a little bit more game management focused.
Whatever it is, that's what's happening. Whereas I see Bear
pushing the ball downfield, I've actually seen Emerson Goleman pushed
the ball downfield a little bit more as well. Chunkyards plays,

(15:50):
dynamic plays. These are the things that score touchdowns. Okay,
these are the plays that ultimately puts you in the
best position to win football games.

Speaker 3 (16:01):
Are they a little bit more chaotic?

Speaker 1 (16:03):
Are they a little bit more Can they be you know,
controversial because they end up as turnovers?

Speaker 3 (16:11):
But that's what I've seen.

Speaker 1 (16:13):
So anyway, I just wanted to side note that as
Emerson Gallman has not been discussed.

Speaker 3 (16:19):
The only guy that's really discussed.

Speaker 1 (16:20):
Emerson as was actually Killanie at like Big twelve media Days.

Speaker 3 (16:24):
He gave some loved Emerson. I actually really like Emerson.

Speaker 1 (16:28):
I wish I wish we could see more of Emerson
and maybe we will because from an athleticism standpoint, even
a football like Q standpoint, and even a throw ability,
I really like Emerson. Anyway, Bear Bachmeyer is becoming QB one.
I was asked earlier today by a former BYU Great.

(16:48):
He said, how far ahead is bear Bachmeyer? How far
ahead is he? Versus McKay Hilson. I'd say, you know,
he's he's a little bit ahead right now. But when
you're a little bit ahead of Beckay Hills, that, considering
you've only had twelve eleven practices under your belt, that says.

Speaker 3 (17:07):
Everything you need to know about this quarterback competition.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
The fact that bear can at an accelerated pace get
into the quarterback conversation is truly.

Speaker 3 (17:19):
A phenomenon.

Speaker 1 (17:21):
It shouldn't happen, not with two quarterbacks that have G
five experience and have been in the program for over
a year.

Speaker 3 (17:28):
So speaks to bear.

Speaker 1 (17:30):
Bachmeyer's ability, his football acuity, his decision making, his IQ
And as I stated before, I'm not overly impressed with
bear Bachmeyer's mechanics. I don't like you know, I don't
love his footwork, but he's just a football player.

Speaker 3 (17:50):
He just gets it done.

Speaker 1 (17:52):
Reggie Miller, I hated his mechanics when he was shooting
the ball, but it went in more often than than
it did not, it seemed, and and bear Bachmeyer has
a similar feel to it. It's not like He's got
an ugly throwing motion. It's just not my favorite at
any rate. Andrew Gentry of pining on the quarterer and
his longest answer. His longest answer, I know I'm reading

(18:15):
between the lines here in our nitty gritty segment. His
longest answer was centered on who Bear Bachmeyer. I feel
like we need to play the bear Bachmeyer interview today.
We may get to that later on. By the way,
bear Bachmeyer hopped onto our show after he committed It

(18:35):
was a great interview, fantastic. You can get to know
him a little bit better. Stay tuned forward. We'll get
it dialed up for you maybe later on in the hour.
But Bear Bachmeyer has only been out, only trotted out
in front of the BYU media one time. We haven't
really heard from Bear outside of that initial media availability
when camp Collotti kicked off. We'll get to know him

(18:58):
a little bit better later on at the show. Stay
tuned to go, don't go anywhere. Want to remind you
guys that were live from Thanksgiving Point Golf Course at
the Help for Heroes Fundraiser six annual golf tournament.

Here the cello Suite.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
Number one written by bach Yes, indeed Bachmeyer.

Speaker 3 (21:49):
Is it a Bachmeyer type of show.

Speaker 1 (21:52):
We're gonna get to know Bear Bachmeyer actually in there
saying what do we know about Bear Bachmeyer?

Speaker 3 (21:56):
Question of the day?

Speaker 1 (21:57):
You know, band of the day, the bach figure. We'd
go that route as Bear Bachmeyer's on everyone's stung right now,
everyone's talking about and how he's elevated his play in
order to be in the conversation. Not only in the
conversation but getting team won reps. As I mentioned in
the prior segment, Andrew Gentry, one of the leaders of

(22:18):
the team of the Faces of the Program now the
transfer from Michigan.

Speaker 3 (22:20):
The national champion.

Speaker 1 (22:22):
I mean he elaborated and pontificated on the skill set
and what Bachmeyer brings to the table more elaborately, and
I think that's a sign reading between the lines, maybe
going even too deep, but we know how we like
to go with.

Speaker 3 (22:34):
Those deep cuts, those deep evaluations.

Speaker 1 (22:38):
Aaron Roderick called bear Bachmeyer on what day two or
day three of fall camp, he said, he described him
as brilliant, brilliant. When do coaches ever call college football
players brilliant? That's a big word for a college football player. Okay,

(23:01):
great player, solid player, dynamic player.

Speaker 3 (23:05):
You don't ever hear of the He's brilliant.

Speaker 1 (23:08):
The bespectacled play caller from the BYU booth, Aaron Roderick
calls him brilliant.

Speaker 3 (23:16):
I say brilliant, ben Bachmeer's brilliant.

Speaker 1 (23:20):
I say so much alliteration, so much pontification when you're
talking about Bear so I figure in this segment, we're
gonna talk about it. Brought to you by Royal Army

I interviewed him a couple of months ago when he
signed when he committed to the Byau Cougar football team,
four star quarterback at a high school transferring to BYU

(24:58):
now the former Stanford Cardinal nowt b A you Cougar,
We got Bear Bachmeyer on the line.

Speaker 3 (25:02):
Bear, how are you, buddy?

Speaker 6 (25:04):
I'm doing well.

Speaker 3 (25:05):
Thanks for having me on hey.

Speaker 1 (25:06):
Man, appreciate you spending some time with his Bear. Congratulations.

Speaker 3 (25:10):
Man.

Speaker 1 (25:10):
How does it feel to know where you're gonna be
balling out, uh in college football for the next few years?

Speaker 6 (25:17):
Yeah, it feels. It feels great.

Speaker 5 (25:19):
You know, obviously, I think the culture of b i
US is definitely great fit for me and and you know,
unfortunately my my my brother's joining, so that that'll be
it'll be fun times.

Speaker 1 (25:28):
Yeah, Like, how how big of a role did that
play in this process, that that where both of you
guys could be on the same team again, did you
guys want I mean, obviously you guys are at Stanford
for a reason together, right and and uh, there's probably
some influence there in the initial recruitment and things. Was
that a priority for you guys to play at the
same school.

Speaker 6 (25:50):
It wasn't a priority.

Speaker 5 (25:51):
It's definitely a you know, definitely definitely a big additional factor.

Speaker 6 (25:57):
You know.

Speaker 5 (25:57):
Obviously we played in high school together and we always
thought it was cool, it would be cool to play
in college. You know, at the end of the day,
we we had to do its best for ourselves, and
luckily it was uh, you know, initially coming to Stanford
and then uh.

Speaker 6 (26:08):
You know, ultimately ending up at by U. So I'm
hoping that all where it's out.

Speaker 1 (26:12):
What was the recruiting process like coming out of high
school for you what what were some of the factors
that led you to Stanford the first go around?

Speaker 3 (26:19):
Because you were you kind of had the pick of
the litter man.

Speaker 1 (26:23):
You had many offers around the country, some high profile
offers as a four star quarterback, Uh, big names here.
Why why Stanford the first go about?

Speaker 5 (26:37):
Yeah, I was I was obviously fortunate that, you know,
the most two of offers. You know, I think I
was kind of looking at my ceiling one night and
it's kind of you know, what, why not Stanford?

Speaker 6 (26:46):
Obviously? Uh, you know, high in academics.

Speaker 5 (26:48):
And you know, they've they've been a dominant program, you
know in the past, and you know, I think the
fact that playing with my brother was big as well.

Speaker 6 (26:56):
Obviously, circumstances arose, and you know, I don't don't regret
any decisions that I made. Again, I'm just hoping it
all over.

Speaker 1 (27:02):
So yeah, and look, Stanford's a fantastic university. The academic component.
They played good football as well. We chatted with Tiger
and he told us that he I mean, he graduated
from Stanford two and a half years. Apparently mom and
dad really prioritized the academics. So I imagine that played
a big role for you. And uh, you know, not

(27:25):
only are you guys great football players, it looks like
you guys care about faith as well as as football.
Pretty well rounded kids. What what what do you attribute
that to?

Speaker 3 (27:36):
Sure?

Speaker 5 (27:37):
Yeah, no, I appreciate you guys kind of pointing that out.
My my dad was an officer in the Marine Corps.

Speaker 6 (27:43):
He went to Annapolis. He actually played basketball as well.

Speaker 5 (27:47):
But I think you know him raising us, and you know,
I got four siblings, so he kind of brought that
that militant kind of attitude. And you know, we always
organized very family oriented and then my mom, you know,
it's raising five kids as hard, and you know kind
of you know, it's got me thinking, I guess I'm
getting kind of choked up. But you know stuff, you know,
she she could uh you know, three meals a day

(28:09):
and you know, drove us around everywhere. But I think
just being in that household and and you know me
kind of blindly copying. You know, I have three older siblings, Hank, Ellen, Tiger,
and and you know me blindly copying them and and
their their their traits and then you know, me being
a good role model to my younger brother. I think
it just made the best of those both worlds. And
and you know I think, uh, yeah, I think I

(28:31):
think having my parents there and you know, just really
caring if it was my my younger Sorry I'm kind
of rambling, but if it was my younger brother's game
at seven seven in the morning or my oldest brother's
game at seven at night, we were always there. My
dad was really adamant on us always being at our games.
So I think just just are tight knit and you know,
being very family oriented definitely shaped who we are.

Speaker 6 (28:51):
And yeah, I wouldn't change it for the world.

Speaker 1 (28:53):
Well, I respect the culture that your parents build. I'm
always intrigued as to you know how you know, successful
people are are created in this life, and you guys
are obviously very successful, you know, on and off the
football field, well rounded, and uh I love great familial

(29:15):
cultures that produced high that produced high level people, and
I view that, you know, looking at the Bachmeyer family here,
I knew Hank. I mean we were recovering when he
was playing against Britt Bregghel. He's like, he's a great quarterback,
a great person. We got to know him a little bit,
you know, through that that b YU versus boys you
state rivalry that occurred during independence, and so uh pretty

(29:37):
pretty cool to see, uh the uh, you know, this
kind of come full circle and the bach Myers are
now part of the b YU family. So what attracted
you about b YU then coming out of the portal?
What was the pitch to get you to provo SU Yeah.

Speaker 5 (29:53):
I think I think kind of you know, when I
took my visit there and I really got to sit
down and talk.

Speaker 6 (29:58):
Ball with with a Rod and coach Mitchell.

Speaker 5 (30:00):
You know, I think when you look at the scheme,
there's a lot of you know, pro style principles, but
but then.

Speaker 6 (30:06):
You know, you mix in you know a lot of.

Speaker 5 (30:07):
The college principal with with the with quarterback run game,
and I just felt like, uh, you know, I think
I could fit fifth offense really well. And so I
was attracted attracted from from a scheme standpoint. And then
you know, sitting down with coach Hockey and you know,
the cultural aspect of by you, I don't think there
could be a better place for for for me to

(30:29):
to be at.

Speaker 1 (30:31):
How do you describe your your skill set on the
football field? Like if we we haven't seen tape of
bear Bachmeyer and I asked you, hey, describe your your
your skill set?

Speaker 3 (30:40):
What what? What?

Speaker 1 (30:41):
What am I going to see when I pull up
tape of bear Bachmeyer? Yeah?

Speaker 6 (30:47):
I think, you know, I think.

Speaker 5 (30:48):
I think I'm a guy that can you know, make
a lot of throws and and you know, if I
need to, I can go get a first down with
my legs.

Speaker 6 (30:55):
But you know, it's it's a team sport, so I
test test a lot.

Speaker 5 (30:58):
Of the the win and and uh you know, I
guess success in a sense to to to the team.
You know, it's it's a team sport and uh yeah,
so that's why that's why football, that's my football is awesome.

Speaker 8 (31:10):
Yeah, Bear Andrew Peterson here, we're talking a little bit
about your skill set. You know, you mentioned you're a
bit of a running quarterback. You can throw it too.
There's a lot of dual threat quarterbacks out there. Who
do you who do you look up to in the
game of football? Who do you model your game after?
Who do you learn from?

Speaker 6 (31:29):
Yeah, well.

Speaker 5 (31:32):
I'd say I'd say my brother, Hank, He's my brother.
But you know, I guess I guess Caleb Williams as well,
when when he was at USC and not now now
the Bears, you know, I think, and then Josh Allen
kind of I think we all have kind of same
build and and you know, again can make a lot
of throws and if if needed, to utilize our legs.

Speaker 6 (31:52):
On the ground.

Speaker 1 (31:54):
I know a Rod recruited out of high school, but
he probably felt the sting, the pain of losing you
maybe the first go around. What do you recall about
that that recruitment the first go around? And did you
did you flirt at all with b Yu? How flirtatious
were you with a Rod the first go around?

Speaker 5 (32:13):
Yeah, we were flirting a little, it was I was
I was committed.

Speaker 6 (32:18):
I committed to Stanford.

Speaker 5 (32:19):
Pretty early, so just kind of the character. I didn't
want to, you know, take another visit anywhere. But you know,
coach Mitchell and and and coach a Rod Uh, they
were always you know, they always kept a good relationship
if if something were to happen in the future, and
and man, I'm glad they did because you know, here
we are now.

Speaker 1 (32:38):
You know. Yeah, it's it's important to keep those relationships strong,
no doubt about it. Beart Bockmeyer here on ESPN the Fan, Uh,
when do you arrive in Provo? When do you plan
on enrolling and getting into your uh to your your
housing and start uh, you know, preparing for the twenty
twenty five season.

Speaker 3 (32:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (32:58):
So I have to finish up the quarter here at
Stanford and then I think i'll be up there in
about five weeks.

Speaker 1 (33:05):
I think, nice, man, what are you gonna be studying
at b YU. Have you got that figured out yet?

Speaker 3 (33:11):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (33:11):
I think I was gonna do econ economics here at Stanford,
so I think I'll probably do that at BYU as well.
But I've been looking at the branches of business at
by U and so I'm pretty fascinated with with entrepreneurship
as well, so maybe maybe a major minor deal going
on there.

Speaker 6 (33:29):
But yeah, we'll see.

Speaker 1 (33:30):
How how money worked, how it uh you know, the
the how how just kind of the financial systems works.
It sounds like you're you're intrigued by that.

Speaker 5 (33:41):
Yeah, yeah, what's cool about economically, There's there's a multitude
of different avenues that you can take.

Speaker 6 (33:45):
You know, there's obviously finance, there's.

Speaker 5 (33:47):
Also you know, the political side, which which at Stanford
there's something called the Hoover Institute, which is one of
the most renowned economic centers kind of in the country
that I kind of fell in love with.

Speaker 6 (33:59):
So yeah, I mean.

Speaker 5 (34:01):
That there's a lot of apvenues that that you can
take with with with an ECON degree.

Speaker 1 (34:06):
Love that man, Well, b Y is a pretty good
NBA program. Tiger told us that he's, uh, he's looking
to be admitted into that program as well. After two
and a half years getting that computer science degree. Is
NBA maybe on the doctor for you as well?

Speaker 6 (34:20):
Yeah, yeah, no doubt.

Speaker 5 (34:22):
I mean, why not why not go get an NBA
from from from BYU.

Speaker 6 (34:28):
But yeah, Tiger got his degree in two and a
half I'm gonna try and get mine in the to
in a quarter.

Speaker 1 (34:32):
So le's yeah, I guess it seems like you guys
are pretty competitive.

Speaker 5 (34:35):
Now.

Speaker 1 (34:35):
We have had Tiger on and he said he's never
lost a race to uh, and he's stronger than you.
He's never lost a wrestling match. I mean, you're a
big dude. I mean I was told you're you know,
you know, six one six two to. You know, I've
seen you've listed at two twenty five. I think great
Biggin said he's two thirty five.

Speaker 3 (34:51):
I don't know if you just.

Speaker 1 (34:52):
Said that, like because he thinks you've gained weight recently,
you know, kind of like is this is this true
that Tiger is faster and strong younger than you.

Speaker 3 (35:00):
I know he's older, but you look like the bigger guy.

Speaker 6 (35:04):
Yeah, not not stronger. He was he was uh he
was lying there. I think, uh yeah, I mean, you know,
he's a receivers. He's gotta be quick, gotta be fast.
And then the wrestling it, you know, this is he's
a he's the bigger brother and uh, you know he's
kind of got like the the wiry kind of deal
going on. So every time we would wrestle, he would

(35:26):
give me. Sometimes we haven't.

Speaker 5 (35:28):
We haven't actually fought in a while, so we I
probably got to start something to get it going again.

Speaker 6 (35:34):
But and then, but I will say the cerebral sense.
We would play chess almost every.

Speaker 5 (35:40):
Night growing up, and you know, obviously you're a younger
brother trying to learn.

Speaker 6 (35:44):
He would get me.

Speaker 5 (35:45):
But I practice for however many hours a day, and
I don't think he's beat me in chess since uh yeah,
since that.

Speaker 1 (35:53):
So wait wait, so like when did that threshold? When
was that that threshold crossed? Like when did did younger
brother go from padawan to master in chess?

Speaker 6 (36:05):
Yeah, so we started. I can't I can't remember.

Speaker 5 (36:07):
I mean we we would play I mean seven, eight,
nine years old, and I mean I probably say like
the nine ten year old threshold right there. Yeah, I
mean I don't I don't even remember losing tune and
chess after that.

Speaker 3 (36:20):
So love it, man. We got some chest that dud.

Speaker 1 (36:24):
We got some chess masters going at you see, now,
what's going to be awesome. So like I was, I'm
a former bau guy BA football player. We used to
have like king pong and we had the shuffle board
in there. What we should have had in there is
a chess board or multiple chess boards, so we could
you know, get that mental acuity, the strategy, you know,
the the the it's a it's a it's an enlightened game,

(36:49):
right and Mike, it's said, so you need to with
Tiger bring in the chess board and and start having
little one v one tournaments there in the in the
locker room. That's that that'd be a nice And we
were talking about culture with Tiger and you've brought it
up as well, you know, fit culture that would fit
there at BYU and that then that locker room that

(37:10):
could be a nice addition to the b YU culture.

Speaker 6 (37:14):
You have no doubt.

Speaker 1 (37:15):
So I'm putting that request for you guys to bring
the chessboard into the locker room. Bear Bachmeyer here on
ESPN the Fan.

Speaker 8 (37:24):
Yeah, we're just we're talking a little chess. Obviously, you
love football, so we've covered those two things. What are
the other hobbies that Bear Bachmeyer likes to get into
when he's not playing football, when he's not beating Tiger
at chess.

Speaker 6 (37:38):
Yeah, we I like to sing and I like to
play the guitar.

Speaker 5 (37:42):
Me and me and Tiger. I actually created the club.
So at our high school. We call our mascot is
called the Nighthawks. And so we created an acapella club
and we called it a Cappella and so it was
a lot of the football guys and we just created
that club and we started seeing in at rallies and
we started doing Valentine grams and yeah, it's a really

(38:03):
fun time.

Speaker 3 (38:04):
Love that man.

Speaker 1 (38:06):
You know, it's it's good to be well rounded, and
it sounds like the parents have instilled that in you guys.

Speaker 3 (38:12):
So Bear.

Speaker 1 (38:15):
Pete Damiloy initially reported, Hey, he's coming in, you know,
and he's he's here to compete. Obviously, there's the incumbent
Jake Retzlaw. There's some four star guys out there that
want to come in immediately and they're like, hey, I'm
the starter. I don't care that I'm coming in right
before fall camp. Like I'm the dude, I'm the guy.
I'm going to be that starter. Now, what's your mentality
like coming in and you know, do you do.

Speaker 3 (38:36):
You want to compete for the job this year?

Speaker 1 (38:38):
Do you do you kind of you know, kind of
understand the dynamics in that quarterback room right now with
some experienced FBS players et cetera. What's your mindset like
as far as competing this year and even next year.

Speaker 5 (38:52):
Yeah, the the mindset is is kind of always to compete.

Speaker 6 (38:56):
You know.

Speaker 5 (38:56):
Obviously obviously somebody of Jake's pedigree, you know, I think
it'd be great to learn and develop from him. And
then you know, obviously there's a lot of studs does
in the room, and so I think just being in
that environment and you know, being surrounded in that atmosphere
is definitely going to elevate my game.

Speaker 6 (39:10):
And yeah, I can't wait. I'm really excited.

Speaker 1 (39:14):
Okay, so Ben Crittle here, we're coming back. We may
get back to that sound. I was interviewing Baron Barker, right,
this is a couple of months ago, So you're getting
a feel of his personality, getting a feel for his mindset,
his fit at BYU, his not only he's act but
football acuity, and how he's been brilliant in his ability

(39:36):
to read, retain, apply the playbook thus far and fall
camp through. What eleven practices are sore so, uh, unique individuals,
singular individual and that's why you heard the question about Hey,
Jake Redslaugh. We had we didn't even know about Jake
at that time it wasn't hadn't been officially announced, and
so I was asked the question earlier today. Do you

(39:57):
think that you know, Bear knew that Jake was.

Speaker 3 (39:59):
On the w No, I you know, I don't think
he did.

Speaker 1 (40:03):
But you know, there was probably a reason why be
why you wanted Bear at you know, in this quarterback room.

Speaker 3 (40:11):
You wonder what the quarterback two.

Speaker 1 (40:13):
Competition would have been would have been, probably similar to
what we're seeing right now, with a QB one competition.
Jake would have still been the guy, but Bear would
have been positioning himself to be QB two. So that's
a note here. Anyway, let's get back to the shown.
We'll finish up this. This interview, by the way, brought
to you by Help for Heroes. We're live from Things

(40:34):
Coming Point Golf Course. We have a fantastic auction event
going on tonight six pm to nine pm. If you
want to be a part of it, come on buy
six pm to nine pm. Golf memorabilia signed by Tiger
Woodsville Nicholson, Scottie Scheffler, John Ram.

Speaker 3 (40:48):

Speaker 1 (40:50):

Autographed Heisman Football's autograph, sports and music posters Taylor Swift
guitar signed A Smith Van Halen, Kenny Chesney, Garth Brooks.

Speaker 3 (41:03):
You damn it.

Speaker 1 (41:04):
We got a one hundred percent of all proceeds benefit the
Bigger than Us nonprofit organization helping first responders suffering from PTSD, depression, trauma,
and addiction.

Speaker 3 (41:15):
Okay, we'll get.

Speaker 1 (41:18):
Back to some Bear Bachmeier sound here and finish up
this segment. Yeah, well, what did you find out about
your game? You participated in the springball correct, what did
you find out about your game in spring ball?

Speaker 5 (41:33):
Yeah? I mean, you know, there's obviously a big adjustment
with the speed of play from from from high school
to college, and I think it kind of comes down
to preparation and so you know it schematically being very prepared,
and you know, I think just you know, how many
hours in the film room or you know, with your
with the other quarterbacks trying to just get that one

(41:55):
percent better every day.

Speaker 6 (41:57):
Yeah, I think that that's a it's a big help.

Speaker 1 (42:00):
In discussing, you know, getting to know you and Tiger.
One thing's pretty obvious to me, and there's there's a
few things that are obvious, but like what, you guys
don't have really any entitlement and in this modern era
of football, man, I mean I see entitlement everywhere coming
out of high school, going into the portal. Uh, there's

(42:21):
it's sometime somewhat synonymous with entitlement.

Speaker 3 (42:24):
How how come you guys aren't entitled? What does that
step from? Yeah?

Speaker 6 (42:31):
Sorry that Yeah, I mean I think I don't know.

Speaker 5 (42:34):
It kind of just you know, being being surrounded by
my siblings and you know, kind of how we were
raised by my parents.

Speaker 7 (42:40):
You know, just.

Speaker 5 (42:42):
I don't know, I just we always wanted to, you know,
be be humble and and you know, just kind of
give it all in the field, and you know after
after the game, just bill get ice cream with our
family or you know, just have a good time with
with with your loved ones. And you know, we don't
really care about the whatever the social deals and all that.

Speaker 6 (43:01):
But yeah, I mean it's it's it's cool.

Speaker 3 (43:03):
Yeah, well I love it.

Speaker 1 (43:05):
I've always said I I've talked about this. I don't
think entitlement really works at b YU and Stanford's probably
similar in that regard. You probably didn't see a whole
lot of entitlement there at Stanford either, right, Yeah, I.

Speaker 6 (43:17):
Know, I mean, uh, I mean on Saturdays.

Speaker 3 (43:20):
Uh, it was.

Speaker 6 (43:21):
It was definitely weird.

Speaker 5 (43:22):
I mean there's you know, billionaires here that they probably
got a lot of better things to do and you know,
go create a software business or something like that.

Speaker 6 (43:29):
But yeah, not a lot.

Speaker 5 (43:31):
Of entitlement, which you know, I'm proud of and you know,
I'm glad, glad you guys can can see that as well.

Speaker 3 (43:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (43:36):
Man, I'm excited to watch you compete and and to
see how you can integrate into this by U roster.
Have you been able to get to know any of
the players, the current players on the roster yet.

Speaker 5 (43:47):
So when we took our visit there, there weren't a
lot of a lot of players up there.

Speaker 6 (43:53):
Actually I got to go to top Golf with a.

Speaker 5 (43:57):
Couple of them, and uh yeah, I've had jig Jake's
number for a while.

Speaker 6 (44:01):
So once I once I committed, he congratulated me. So
that was really cool.

Speaker 1 (44:05):
And I want to say that there's a few Utah
football players from the state of Utah that are that
are currently at Stanford. I know you were just there
for a uh, you know, a few semesters, right, but
I think Bo Tait. I'm good friends with his dad.
I competed against him when he was at the University
of Utah and I'm kind of rolling through the roster

(44:29):
neuc Tamopayo. I don't know if he ever arrived at Stanford,
but he he came from Stanford, you know, via the
portal he came to be Why you did did you
get to know bo or or Nucy in the in
the process there at Stanford?

Speaker 6 (44:43):
Yeah, I got to got to know Bo. I'm actually
really good friends with Lucy.

Speaker 3 (44:47):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (44:47):
I mean I think when when you think about the
those kind of people in the character that that that
they have, you know, you just kind of think of,
you know, good, good people and you know, just people
that you want to be around.

Speaker 6 (44:58):
And yeah, I'm really excited in that aspect.

Speaker 3 (45:01):
We've talked about culture fit.

Speaker 1 (45:03):
What why do you think you're a good fit at
b YU, like from a culture standpoint.

Speaker 5 (45:09):
Yeah, So when we sat down with coach Tataki, he
was telling stories about how he gets mad at his
coaches when when they don't go to their kids game,
they don't go to their kids games. And again, my
dad was very adamant on you know, if it was
my sister's tracked me for for five hours.

Speaker 6 (45:26):
You know, we have to sit down and watch the
wol track me for five hours.

Speaker 5 (45:31):
And so I just think that that family oriented, you
know kind of vibe and just that culture being there
from that aspect is definitely very enticing for me.

Speaker 6 (45:41):
And then the spiritual aspect, we're Catholic.

Speaker 5 (45:45):
And so I think just being around, being in that
environment definitely well well will grow my relationship with Jesus.
And and you know, I don't think anybody epitomizes that
more than than Jake, who's Jewish and you know, he
embraces his religions so much, and so that's I'm also
excited for that.

Speaker 3 (46:02):
Love that man.

Speaker 1 (46:05):
You mentioned the faith aspect, and not not all people
they not all people put faith as a priority when
they're making these decisions. And so how how is faith
played a role in your life? Uh to make such
a positive impact in your world, your your family, your life.

Speaker 5 (46:27):
Yeah, I mean I mean a big role. You know,
why would you not want to be surrounded in that environment?
You know, Fortunately at Stanford, we we had this club
called called.

Speaker 6 (46:37):
S c A which.

Speaker 5 (46:41):
You know it was was was was kind of a
great you know pedestal and and you know, growing, growing
my relationship. But you know, I think just being in
that that that true environment, and you know, I think
I think it plays a big role in Yeah, I'm still.

Speaker 3 (46:55):
Well, Barret. It's been a pleasure getting to know you.

Speaker 1 (46:57):
Can't wait to cover you when you arrive in prove
I get the you know, get eyes on the skill set,
and get to know you a little bit better.

Speaker 3 (47:04):
It's been a great interview.

Speaker 1 (47:06):
And let us know if you need anything from us,
good luck with everything.

Speaker 3 (47:09):
We'll see you here shortly in Provable. All right, there
you go.

Speaker 1 (47:14):
That was our interview a few months ago with Bear Bachmeyer.
Truly a singular soul man, a singular human. Some people
have asked me, hey, what what of what faith is
Bear Bachmer? Where's where's the Bachmeier name come from? And
you heard him discuss his faith, Catholic faith.

Speaker 3 (47:31):
He was a part of the I.

Speaker 1 (47:33):
Think the Christian Athletes Association there at Stanford and.

Speaker 3 (47:39):
Bachmeyer.

Speaker 1 (47:41):
You know, I'm not exactly sure the etymology of Bachmeier
and so we have to de Devin did that.

Speaker 3 (47:47):
But I believe it's German. I believe it's of German descent.

Speaker 1 (47:51):
The state of and I may not be saying the
Bavaria or Bavaria, but yeah, the Bachmeyer clan from Germany
and of Catholic faith faith, and you got to know
him a little bit better. Loves chess, studying economics, just.

Speaker 3 (48:07):
To name a few of the gems from that interview.

Speaker 1 (48:09):
And now by my side, now live from Thanksgiving Point
Golf Course. Thanksgiving Point Golf Course is going to be
holding a helpful Heroes Evan extravag answer. Tonight premiere auction
of sports and music memorabilia six pm to nine pm.
Come on by a banquet, live music and food, much
more a golf memorabilia sound by Tiger Woods, Phil Nicholson,

(48:29):
Scottie Scheffler, John Ram and John Daily, Autograph, Jerseys autograph,
Heisman Football's autographed guitars from Taylor Swift, Aerosmith, Van Halen,
Kenny Chesney, Garth Brooks Stop By one hundred percent of
all proceeds benefit the Bigger than Us, not for profit
nonprofit organization helping first responders suffering from PTSD, depression, trauma

(48:52):
and addiction. Ronnie, your thoughts, your commentary, What did we
learn about Bear Bachmeier?

Speaker 9 (48:58):
Don't forget us sellers of you know, or containing whatever.

Speaker 3 (49:01):
Yeah, he said, and that was later.

Speaker 9 (49:03):
You know, I want to add that into getting to
know Bear. He's definitely easy. He's a smart, nerdy guy
but likes that fun. And he's a competitor. I think
the biggest thing is it's an individual without Guyle, not
in no entitlement at all, knows he has to go
when the job came in of I'm coming in, I
got to compete, I gotta do this. Nothing was you know,
you didn't come in as I'm promised anything. He said,

(49:25):
I have to go earn everything. And you see that
right as being the favorite taking the one reps and
the talent speaks for itself. I was listening to the
interview on my way up pick it a litter like
you said of offers in the interview, he could have
gone anywhere he wanted started to Standford. Things changes, they
always do, and there's a connection here the culture right
developing at the next level a Rod and what he
can do with quarterbacks and then getting to the next

(49:45):
level Nucy Tom Mapea. If I said that right, I apologize.
If I didn't, you got lots of reasons of why
and been we've seen this before, not just with Bears.
And we're starting to see with the more guys that
aren't members of the church. We see what guys that
are their work. They're finding they back to Brigham. You
know in the beginning, maybe that wasn't the case when
they first committed somewhere else, or things don't work out,

(50:05):
but they're coming home. They're finding their way home. And
I believe it was his brother just when I had
this tidbit that said, I am the culture, I am
a mode. I do fit here, and you're starting to
see that they fit right in. And now he's winning
get on the field, Ben Rally in the locker room
is emerging, or as I already said, has emerged and
will be. The guy has to solidify it this week.

(50:27):
But yeah, I'm very impressed for a guy that's nineteen
years old. And I'm very impressed because a nineteen I
was not I was not Bear Bachmeyer. And he's the
standard he's in.

Speaker 3 (50:38):
He Kudos to him.

Speaker 9 (50:39):
Kudos to a guy that has only played what eleven
or twelve practices at BYU, that got here a month
and a half ago and is already up to speed faster,
and you already mentioned it. I have never heard, i think,
in my time of covering an offensive coordinator call a
kid brilliant.

Speaker 3 (50:56):
That's what I was saying.

Speaker 9 (50:57):
And when you call a kid brilliant, and this is
no disrespect, Zack and Jared were brilliant in my opinion
what they're able to do. But when you say that
about a kid who's got so much potential and upside,
when you say, yeah, he's brilliant and other two guys
are in the room, that speaks a lot to what
you see in the upside and what it could be. Yes,
there are a lot of cons if it goes bad. But

(51:18):
what he has around Ben, and I'm gonna say this,
I think the biggest thing to get him confident, God'll
have him run. If you can have him run Ben
and run over some linebackers, you know, outrun some defensive
linemen and non conference play and conference play. If he's
able to do that, imagine what he's able to do
next year. Even if he manages the game. Can you
imagine when you get to year two, year three, or

(51:39):
now in the row will happen before Rider Lions comes.
So at the end of the day, very impressive kid,
a super humble kid and can't wait to see what
he's able to do.

Speaker 3 (51:48):
Love it, guys.

Speaker 1 (51:49):
As I mentioned, we're live from Thanksgiving Point Golf Course.

Speaker 3 (51:53):
If you'd like to be a part.

Speaker 1 (51:54):
Of a fantastic event, it's tonight banquet, live music, food,
six pm to nine pm. It's a premier auction of
sports and music memorabilia. Come on by one hundred percent
of all proceeds benefit Bigger than Us, a nonprofit organization
helping first responders suffering from PTSD, depression, trauma, and addiction.
So you can be a part of this fantastic event.

Speaker 3 (52:17):
You're gonna love it. It's gonna be fantastic.

Speaker 1 (52:20):
And that was a great segment as well, getting to
o Bear Bachmeyer.

Speaker 3 (52:24):
We'll take a time out.

Speaker 1 (52:25):
We'll come back with Blaine Fowler, former BYU Gray talking
BYU quarterbacks. What has he seen from these quarterbacks? Why
is Bear maybe a favorite in his mind?

Speaker 3 (52:38):
That up next. This is Cougar Sports on one O
three nine ninety eight point three E
