Speaker 8 (03:39):
It turned white. If you think I'm lying, g man,
there's that.
Speaker 7 (03:42):

they step up to the mic and professionals.
Speaker 6 (04:47):
Man, we put it, we put away inside our grievances
and we and we perk up and we beat Chipper
on the showy.
Speaker 5 (04:56):
I love that about you guys, always bringing the the
the fire, always bringing the fervor. Check out the rest
of our ESPN the fan starting a line to pick
out Riley Jensen, former b YU and Utah sed eight
quarterback to top quarterback room. What does he think about
this particular quarterback controversy? You know who else was in
a quarterback competition at BYU back in nineteen ninety seven?
(05:17):
G men, remember that Kevin Federick, Paul Shoemaker, and there's
another Riley Jensen.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
Oh that's right.
Speaker 5 (05:28):
Riley was a part of that quarterback competition. Is Paul Shoemaker?
It was Kevin Federick and Riley. After springball, Riley said, look,
I think I know who the favorite is. Went into
Lavelle's office and probably asked to transfer. So he'll tell
you that story coming up at three h five.
Speaker 6 (05:49):
Ah, g Man, Well this is based on a little
conversation we had off the air.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Yeah. G Man didn't think I was privy and savvy enough.
Speaker 5 (05:58):
What do you know about the Kevin Fan Paul Schuemaker
Schumacher Shoemaker controversy and quarterback?
Speaker 4 (06:05):
Of course, I asked, Ben, where did you give this knowledge?
He asked a coy. You know, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
He mean, I'm well connected, well sourced. I know you are,
but I talked to a lot of people.
Speaker 4 (06:15):
Yes you do.
Speaker 6 (06:16):
Anyway, it was an interesting time. Like I remember Paul
Shoemaker was. He was the guy, really decorated high school career.
I think he won like two state championships or something.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
I think he was undefeated.
Speaker 4 (06:27):
He was going to be the big deal.
Speaker 6 (06:28):
And when he was put aside and what this Kevin Federick, dude,
what I don't know as a kid.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
I was like, no, this is I should be. But
Federick was pretty good ended up. Okay.
Speaker 6 (06:40):
I don't think the way fans ever loved Kevin Federick
though they never felt kind of had a dour personality,
like he always had a look like nah, it's not
going on.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
I don't know. His ambiance wasn't there.
Speaker 5 (06:54):
You know you you personally never fell in love with
Kevin fan as a.
Speaker 6 (07:00):
Believe, fans did not love Kevin Frederick. Give me a
Commarison Nelson.
Speaker 5 (07:05):
So Kevin Frederick and Riley Nelson are equivalents.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
Yeah, I think so.
Speaker 6 (07:12):
I still if any be way fans out there that
love Kevin Frederick, let me know, because I didn't know
any fan that loved him. I mean he was okay,
he kind of liked him, but it's like, oh yeah, that's.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
My dude, Kevin Frederick.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
But let's go.
Speaker 5 (07:24):
There weren't a.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
Lot of fans that were like that.
Speaker 5 (07:26):
I feel really bad for Riley because I think it
had Riley stayed healthy in twenty twelve and not been
injured and broken his back, he had vertebral fractures.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
By the way, I.
Speaker 5 (07:39):
Think he would have had a tremendous senior season, go
back and watch.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
The Washington State game at home. He looked good, and
then he.
Speaker 5 (07:47):
Was looking great versus we were saying until he got
a helmet rammed into his spine and then it became
a much more difficult scenario for him. So anyways, always
trying to defend Riley Nelson and my guy Riley Jensen
from the feverish and fanatical BAYU fans that you know,
(08:09):
they expect high level, elite quarterback play.
Speaker 6 (08:13):
And you got to think about when Kevin Federick came along.
I mean it was right after b Way's amazing line
of quarterbacks where I mean, yeah, Ty Demmer than John Walsh,
then oh Federick.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
You know it's like, yeah, whatever.
Speaker 5 (08:28):
Alright, g man by my side, we got a great
show for you. Check out the rest of our ESPN
the fans starting lineup. As I mentioned, Riley Riley Jensen's
gonna be joining us. At three h five, Schehan j
rajah Getta talk some college football in that segment, discussing
Bear Bachmeier and the prospects of him becoming the quarterback one.
Jackson Payne the Little Cougar beat at four o five
(08:48):
representing the Dease red New Shout out to Tim Brown
of OURGS six series going to join us at four
thirty Austin Colley at five O five e YU wide receiver.
I'm gonna ask him, how do you get the ball
to widers receivers with an inexperienced quarterback? And how, uh
you know, how can they build some chemistry here in
the weeks leading up to and during the season, And
how can a rod architect and offense that can showcase
(09:10):
this very talented wide receiver room, very deep wide receiver room.
Rob Daniel get to join us at five thirty cornerbacks,
defensive backs. He's worked with and mentored all these guys
as a graduate assistant at b YU over the last
few years. So you're not gonna want to miss that.
A star started cast. Know these stands or butts about it?
Why don't we get into the nitty gritty brought to

That's eight A one four hundred zero at eight five,
Complete circuit Electric, Complete circuit Electric Viewtah dot com. I
want to play some sound for you Cougar fans and
Cooker Country. This was from earlier today. J Hill, your
defensive coordinator, discussing. Okay, give me a moment here. We'll
(10:46):
get to that here momentarily. But Jay Hill gonna break
down what he saw, what he's seeing from his defense.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
I'll give you a few gems though.
Speaker 5 (10:52):
Okay, g man, from our media availability, what we saw
Number one McKay hills dead running with the ones today.
Some really nice throws had a couple of really nice balls.
He can spin it, he can rip it. Do you
take into account that McKay's still getting reps with the
ones and they're kind of alternating back and forth. Bear
was with the twos during our media availability.
Speaker 6 (11:14):
We got to give him the opportunity. And you also
don't want to pronounce Bear. You want Bear to progress
as much as possible, So you want to give him
a real battle. And yeah, I think you owe that
to McKay Hillstead to have that opportunity to respond. Going
back to what we saw last year is Jake responded.
They want to give the framework where hey McKay, this
(11:35):
is what it is. But yeah, you have your opportunity
right now. You owe that to him, And yeah, I'd
love to see him respond. I think that would be
a fantastic thing for all parties involved. If he did
respond and did enough to where he became that starting quarterback,
that would tell me a lot about his ability, his mindset,
and what the way he can do with McKay Hillstead
under center.
Speaker 4 (11:55):
So I think that would be a fantastic development if
that happened.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
You want McKay to push back a little bit.
Speaker 5 (12:01):
You want to create a sense of urgency surrounding this,
and you want to, you know, to a certain degree,
see how Bear reacts to being the guy. Is he
taking on a good leadership role. Is he getting comfortable?
Is he gonna take more risks now that he's running
with the ones? Does he make some poor decisions along
(12:23):
the way now that he's been ushered into the reps
with the ones? And then you know, McKay's over here,
like I can be that guy. I can be that dude.
Maybe I take a few more chances. Maybe he hasn't
thrown many picks. I haven't seen many bad decisions from McKay,
but maybe he's not being aggressive enough and he can
start taking a few more shots downfield.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
And we saw a couple of those shots today.
Speaker 5 (12:45):
We saw a lot of intermediate over the over the
middle passage from McKay. He made some good throws, not
only Carson Ryan, but I think he hit one to
Jojo Phillips as well over.
Speaker 4 (12:53):
The middle Carson Ryan.
Speaker 6 (12:55):
Every practice, every single practice, he's doing things he does
not catch at least thirty five balls this year. I'm
gonna be stunned. I'm gonna be absolutely stunned. I'm saying
forty maybe fifty for Carson Ryan.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
He's good.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
He is really really good.
Speaker 6 (13:11):
I don't know what I was anticipating before he came,
Like I thought, yeah, he's pretty good.
Speaker 4 (13:15):
We'll see if he works in But what I've seen,
he has exceeded everything.
Speaker 6 (13:19):
In my opinion and talking to Kevin Gilbright, I did
an article on Carson just recently. Fantastic interview. By the way,
he presents himself very well. Majoring in economics that ain't easy.
He gave this quote. I think fans will well this
see he goes. I asked him about the academic ration business. Well,
it's definitely harder than Utah. That's what he said. Wait
what Yeah, yeah, it's a lot harder than Utah. It's
(13:43):
on a record, so there you.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
Go on record.
Speaker 6 (13:47):
But I think he's been fantastic. I think he's gonna
be a revelation this year. I don't know what I
was talking about or what you asked me about, but
I wanted to talk about Carson Ryan just because I've
been so impressed with that kid.
Speaker 5 (13:57):
We're talking about quarterbacks, but Carson, he's been very one
and I suggested this a tight end.
Speaker 6 (14:03):
Can be a new quarterback's best friend, and Kevin Gilbray,
he says, I agree with you one hundred percent, which
makes you feel good as a journalist wins, but a
coach agrees with you one hundred percent. But tight ends can, man,
they can be a security blanket in a lot of ways.
They can provide that underneath thing. But when everything's clogged
up down Piel's like, oh, I got my tight end
(14:24):
underneath boom, big body, big target right there, catch it.
Or he can go over the top, present that big
target there. Plus he can add pass pro. He can
absolutely be a quarterback's best friend. Lean on Carson Ran,
he's ready, he's amped, he's he's in the flow of things.
And I think I've said this before on the program,
but lest year it seemed like the way he's trying
(14:45):
to force speed tight end, it's like, no, we need
a tight end to do this. We're gonna try this
didn't look natural, didn't look like in the context of
what the offense does.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
Its absolutely in the context right.
Speaker 6 (14:54):
Now, it's like, oh yeah, that's what the way he
does Carson Ran is this, he's that, he's running routes,
he does everything.
Speaker 4 (15:00):
It's just smooth there's a.
Speaker 6 (15:02):
Connection there, and it's organic, it's real, it's not forced.
Speaker 4 (15:06):
That's why I think Carson rey is gonna catch a
lot of passes this year. My over under forty and
I might go over. He's gonna catch a lot of balls.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
And then you said, like six hundred yards receiving.
Speaker 4 (15:16):
He's going to be a big part of this offense.
Speaker 6 (15:18):
Yeah, I think I was at forty for six hundred
yards and we'll say six touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
Yeah, he s it's I think five touchdowns.
Speaker 4 (15:26):
Let's go five. Yeah. Yeah, I'm gonna stand by that.
I absolutely see that.
Speaker 5 (15:30):
For Carson Rayan, there so forty or forty five receptions.
I think he said forty five, six hundred. I think
I said forty six hundred yards and five touchdowns. If
those are the over under thresholds, I'm gonna ask Cougarnation,
are you taking the over or the under on these?
Speaker 4 (15:49):
I think those are solid numbers.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (15:50):
I like that. I'm confident in that.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
Very confident.
Speaker 5 (15:53):
A couple other things, Cody Hagen continue to continues to
impress a guy that you're very high on.
Speaker 3 (16:00):
He's targeted multiple times. He was targeted at Lavelle.
Speaker 5 (16:04):
On I think it was Thursday night they went under
the lights of Level after their camping trip. Cody runs
a mean double move, you know, slugos post corners hard
to guard, and he was going against Evan Johnson, one
of the premier cornerbacks for the bau Cougars, and.
Speaker 3 (16:22):
He created a decent amount of separation.
Speaker 6 (16:25):
When you talk about mobility of players, young players with
lots and lots of potential, I already talked about Baron
Botmeyer in that regard. Cody Hagen's absolutely that receiver with
its team this year. As far as the guy that
can make the most progression throughout fall camp, I was
gonna say it was Reggie Frishknick, but he's been kind
of hopble. We haven't seen a lot of him. But
to me, even if Frishnick was healthy, I'd go.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
With Cody Hagen.
Speaker 6 (16:45):
We saw it last fall guys, he was going to
be a big part of the offense.
Speaker 4 (16:50):
You would be.
Speaker 6 (16:51):
Bellyaching as much as with Keeland Marrion leaving off, Cody
Hagen would have remained healthy.
Speaker 4 (16:56):
I stand by that. I think he's that good. I
think he can do.
Speaker 6 (17:00):
He can absolutely do what Keelan Marion did last year,
and maybe even more so.
Speaker 4 (17:05):
He has that type of talent. I think he has.
Speaker 6 (17:07):
More upside than Keelan does. He's a better athlete than Kilan.
He has better speed, it's probably similar size. I think
they're pretty similar in size. As far as quicks, Cody's better.
I mean, Keelan was good. I don't want to say
was Keelan was really really good. But the thing which
Cody has over him more than any other it's just
straight ahead speed. He can flat out burn.
Speaker 3 (17:28):
He can run.
Speaker 6 (17:30):
But I think that's the potential proof for Cody Agan
is to match, maybe even surpassed what Klan Marion did
for the offense last year.
Speaker 4 (17:36):
I absolutely believe that. I'll stand by that.
Speaker 3 (17:39):
Let's get to some sound. Let's talk defense with Jay Hill.
Speaker 5 (17:41):
What he's seeing, who's stepping up, who's making plays over
the last few practices.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
This is your assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, j Hill.
Speaker 5 (17:51):
Well.
Speaker 11 (17:51):
I thought today was a very good practice. Last night
was a little sloppy. So as camp goes, sometimes there's
give and take offense the day defense has a day.
I think that's the sign of a good team. But
we still got a ways to go for the next
two weeks.
Speaker 7 (18:10):
A couple of damation with that.
Speaker 11 (18:19):
Well, there's five guys that I feel like we can
win with. And I think all those guys are fighting
in clawing and digging, and uh, every one of them
has different traits and qualities as to what I love
when they're on the field. So they're all gonna play
how much We'll see how the next two weeks continue
to go. But I love the group right now because
(18:41):
any of.
Speaker 4 (18:41):
The new defensive linemens stuck out.
Speaker 3 (18:44):
He's front of the jobs so far taken.
Speaker 11 (18:47):
Oh yeah, like Hunter Klegg, I notice a lot, uh
tell Celia Kna does some really good things. I'm thinking
new obviously counting a ton of USA stands out out. Yeah,
there's probably ten of them I could name, but yeah,
(19:07):
those guys come to mind right now.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
How has that group specifically progressed since they've even just
to start a time.
Speaker 11 (19:13):
I think we're more athletic in that spot than last year,
especially the defensive end group, so the pass rushes got better.
They still got to continue to improve physically. I mean
we lose a battye By was a huge presence on
the edge, just how physical and nasty he was, so
we still got to get some guys to step.
Speaker 4 (19:32):
Up in that role.
Speaker 11 (19:33):
But I do like the pass rush. I've seen that progress,
and I think just the overall knowledge of the scheme
continues to get better.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
How about playmakers any guys?
Speaker 11 (19:47):
You know, it's weird because every day it seems like
it's someone new, Like today, Talon Alfrey had a huge play.
Jack Kelly had an interception. I mean, you know, Glaser
is going to make his huge plays and Kelly's gonna
make him. But yeah, I think the safety group's made
a lot of plays today. Tommy Prass has had a
couple of good ones. Trey Alexander had a nice PVU today.
(20:08):
So I think each day it just goes in waves.
It seems different every day, which is a good thing.
Speaker 4 (20:16):
You mentioned Jack and it's you pick.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
Does he ever have days in him racket?
Speaker 11 (20:20):
And he's been around him so long now where.
Speaker 8 (20:21):
He's surprises you.
Speaker 11 (20:23):
Oh yeah, he's still no. I don't know if surprises
the word, but like a smile where he just does
something pretty special that that seems like almost every day
that he'll do something that. I think that's a good
way to put it. Puts a smile on my face.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
All right, there you go.
Speaker 5 (20:43):
That's Jay Hill, defensive coordinator assistant head coach g Man
thoughts takeaways from media availability earlier today.
Speaker 4 (20:51):
What's funny to be and this is kind of personal note.
Speaker 6 (20:53):
I've covered a lot of these practice sessions, but then
reaches a point where the media doesn't really know what
to ask. Did you gotta get that a pressure during
media ability today? Anyway, that's an aside. What jumped out
at me, and this is a good thing.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
And at what point in fall game is like week uh.
Speaker 6 (21:11):
No, we're here, We're here, this is the dog days
of fall camp. Yeah, yeah, that's what happens. Anyway, what
jumped out at me is you want the offense to respond.
The fact that the offense won the thing last night,
whatever it was, is a very very good thing. We
know this defense is gonna be good, but what's gonna
push this defense to be better? It's defending against a
(21:33):
proactive offense that can do things. That's good for all
parties involved. You want that offense to push back because
that means that the offense is progression, that they can
do things. Plus they're gonna force that defense to be
that much better. I was sick of hearing all the
defense defense is killing these.
Speaker 4 (21:48):
Guys all that.
Speaker 6 (21:49):
No, you want that offense to fight back, and that's
what you saw last night, and that's a very very
good thing for this team going forward. I like that
he pointed out to see Leacana. Like that he pointed
out Hutter Clegg, and I think by us the defensive material.
You know what names I wish I would hear more about,
and I want coaches to volunteer these names. I've been
waiting for all fall camp and I haven't heard it.
(22:10):
There's six defensive tackles that were added on that we
know nothing about. And guess what, we still don't know
anything about these guys because they haven't been mentioned one bet.
I want to at least one of these guys to
step forward and coaches to make mention.
Speaker 4 (22:24):
You know the six I'm talking about right here, I'll
go ahead and name them all right. We got uh Levy.
Speaker 6 (22:34):
Yeah, we haven't heard a thing from him, right, Maverick McManus, Kafusi, Pakofe,
Alvin Pea, Kendall wall.
Speaker 4 (22:46):
Collecti Lotu feenw Okay.
Speaker 6 (22:49):
These were just like additions. And I've been worried about
the defensive tackle thing.
Speaker 4 (22:53):
And I've just been waiting Crittle, been waiting every j
Heell interview.
Speaker 6 (22:56):
Because you don't want to ask him, You don't want
to say suggestica, you just want to.
Speaker 4 (23:00):
Bring it up. Right.
Speaker 6 (23:01):
They haven't brought up any of those guys, and I've
wanted it and I haven't had it. But I am
appeased that they they mentioned Body schoonover, they mentioned uh
Billy Ampua'll quite a bit in Percell, quite a bit.
I think i think Body's gonna have a big ear.
(23:21):
I'm I'm high on Body. I think Body's gonna do
nice things. I think he's gonna be kind of that
Blake Mangelson type. He's gonna be that new Nebo nightmare.
I'm high on Body. I think Body's gonna.
Speaker 4 (23:33):
Do some good things.
Speaker 6 (23:34):
But but I I am satisfied that the defense tackle
of business is gonna be fine.
Speaker 4 (23:38):
But still I wanted to I.
Speaker 6 (23:40):
Just want to hear one of those guys, just one
of those six that I know nothing about.
Speaker 4 (23:44):
And it's a tragedy to this day that I still.
Speaker 6 (23:46):
Know nothing about any of them, because I wanted coaches
just to bring him up. Yeah, he's really looked good.
He's stepped up. No, I haven't heard any of that.
Maybe I was in on the wrong interviews, Maybe he
just didn't cross their mind.
Speaker 4 (23:58):
But I'm have you guys eard mentioned of any of
those guys that I listened to.
Speaker 5 (24:03):
I'm trying to think if there's any you have to think. Yeah, No,
I think uh Peafua is uh with someone that they
expect me to bring in a Hawaii transfer defensive tackle
some people. I mean it's a depth piece, but that
one was a kind of a late edition transfer portal player,
(24:26):
big player, big guy.
Speaker 3 (24:28):
With some experience.
Speaker 5 (24:30):
He hasn't been mentioned, but you know, could maybe be
looked upon as a reliable ronch stoppers.
Speaker 6 (24:37):
See, my ears are always at you and during fall camp,
and I know what matters. I know you don't bring
players up. You have them bring it up because I
don't mean anything. If you have to ask, you want
them to ask.
Speaker 3 (24:48):
You want them to organically, you.
Speaker 4 (24:50):
Want them to be on that.
Speaker 6 (24:51):
Yeah, yeah, that guy's good. I gotta mention him. No, No,
we haven't heard any of those guys.
Speaker 4 (24:56):
I don't like that. I want to just just watch.
This could be one guy.
Speaker 5 (25:01):
Let me ask you this, Jim Man, knowing what You've
delved in deep into.
Speaker 3 (25:04):
This defensive line room.
Speaker 4 (25:06):
Yes, too deep.
Speaker 5 (25:07):
Do you think bwu's defense will play more of a
thirty front or a forty front this season?
Speaker 4 (25:14):
Thirty front?
Speaker 3 (25:14):
You think so?
Speaker 6 (25:15):
Why because that's what they played in the past. You
look at what they were playing last year. This ain't
a forty front defense. Guys, I know everyone likes to
think that. Watch the tape. This team's a thirty front,
even a twenty front. Can we say that? Is that
a thing?
Speaker 4 (25:30):
Twenty front never been said? But the two man front?
I guess yeah, I'm going twenty front, A.
Speaker 3 (25:36):
Two two defensive lineman front.
Speaker 4 (25:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (25:42):
No, I think thirty front is gonna be what this
team's gonna present. This is a three three five defense.
I would be willing to bed if you watch tape
and you looked at the most basic formation b way
he runs more ties and often, And I know I'm
you're ready to pounce on this.
Speaker 4 (25:58):
I could tell you because you.
Speaker 5 (25:59):
Don't think it's a three three four defense just a
three three five.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
You think it's a three three five.
Speaker 4 (26:04):
Yes, well it's variable.
Speaker 6 (26:05):
I mean it's not just just sad, but I would
bet man step into it that if you reviewed all
the field. The most common formation for b A last
year would have been a three three five.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
That's that's when Jacob Romson's running Nickel.
Speaker 6 (26:22):
Yeah, and I'm up against against the guy I probably
should have. Let me tell you how good Ben is
at recognizing formations. I'll be in the press box and
not everything I say, you're like two steps ahead of
it's trussy guy checking whatnot true.
Speaker 4 (26:37):
You're a freaking I've given you credit.
Speaker 3 (26:39):
You're You're a freaking machine man. I'm trying to give
you credit back anyway.
Speaker 6 (26:43):
Two steps Okay, tell me tell me if I'm wrong,
three three five, I'm right.
Speaker 5 (26:48):
I would say that it's going to be multiple. I
would say a thirty front and underfront, maybe more a majority.
I'd be willing to say sixty forty.
Speaker 3 (27:01):
You know, I don't.
Speaker 5 (27:02):
I can say fifty to fifty, thirty to forty front.
That's what it could be. Seventy thirty. I would say,
you're doing yourself a bit of a disservice if you go,
If you go too much Nickel. Even though Tommy Prasses,
my nephew, has been playing a lot of Nichols, which
I want to see him on the field, obviously, and
I've been playing some free and strong et cetera. Gives
(27:23):
him some multiplicity of movement and positional mastery playing time.
Speaker 3 (27:29):
I like that, But.
Speaker 5 (27:32):
I think you may be doing yourself a disservice if
you don't have four linebackers on the football field.
Speaker 3 (27:36):
Yeah, because those.
Speaker 5 (27:37):
You have so much talent in the linebacker. You're stacked
like that's your most talent.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
You can make any mean, that's your most talented.
Speaker 4 (27:43):
Rules you look good.
Speaker 6 (27:45):
Chase Strawford, Bryant's had a good jay, he's had a
good practice.
Speaker 4 (27:48):
And as Kafusie, those are two guys. I don't think
we're talking about.
Speaker 3 (27:51):
Ace Caffusie picked off another pass.
Speaker 6 (27:53):
I think under the lights of the bell, they look
really good in my opinion, yep, yeah, they.
Speaker 3 (27:58):
Have been uh looking in very nice. Are right.

We were in the house as well. We're gonna get
into our pollar that day. Question of the day one
of the things I've been debating with Kugarnation over since
bear Bachmeyer has positioned himself to become the starter of
(30:02):
BYU football. By the way, the biggest nugget of today's
media availability media access was that McKay Hillstead in our
segment of the media availability, was taken reps with the
ones and bear Bachmeer was taking reps with the twos.
So take it for what it's worth, and McKay made
some really nice throws. By the way, but how many
(30:25):
times in BYU football history, I've asked this Kugarnation has
BYU won ten games when being led by a freshman
or redshirt freshman? How many times in BYU football history
has BYU won ten plus games when being led by
(30:48):
a freshman or red shirt freshman. The idea behind this question,
g Man, is that for many in kugrenation, they feel
as if BYU will win ten games this season, they
should win ten games this season.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
That's how they feel, g Man. I'm not telling them
how they can feel.
Speaker 5 (31:11):
They are also extremely excited for a true freshman to
lead him because they feel like he's the best available. Now, look,
you want your best you want your.
Speaker 3 (31:20):
Best player available, and if bear Bakchmeer is your best
player avariable quarterback, then so be it. Let's go. Let's
roll with them.
Speaker 5 (31:25):
But I also think you have to, you know, level
out your expectation a little bit. Let's be a little
be a bit more grounded in our approach. Is he
so good? Is bear Bachmar so good that he can
lead be what you two glorin victory and do something
that has traditionally never been done, even in college football
for that matter.
Speaker 6 (31:43):
I think what fans are relying on, and this is
not crazy, is this supporting cast is really good. And
if he can rely on that supporting cast, that booie
and mop you're looking at Chase Roberts, He's gotten more involved.
That's a really really good option to have. On that outside.
You have Carson Ryan stepping up. Carson RAN's gonna catch
(32:05):
a lot of passes this year. And given that framework
and then the rushing attack, what the defense is gonna
give you. You have to look at the supporting cast
and you have to qualify that into it. Whereas I
think the current supporting cast Bway you has is a
lot better the most years that I've covered this football program.
Speaker 4 (32:27):
It is h dating back.
Speaker 6 (32:29):
You put a lot on that quarterback, and I think Bway,
He's reached the point.
Speaker 4 (32:33):
There's always a lot on the quarterback. I'm not saying that.
Speaker 6 (32:35):
But the supporting cast, you know, it has to be
a give and take thing, and I think the sporting
cast is giving more than it has in past years,
even in recent history. I think the offensive line is
going to be improved. Tight end position is going to
be very much improved. That's gonna You're gonna say a
big impact uptick there. Running back if they stay healthy,
(32:58):
is going to be improved. Receiver man, even with Kielan
Marion and Darius Laster, I think it can be a
similar product. I'm not gonna say improved I'm not there
yet because I think Darius Laster was outstanding and so
is Klyn Marion. But I'm very high on Jojo Phillips,
who I interviewed today, and and uh Cody Hagen, I've
been singing.
Speaker 4 (33:18):
About him a lot.
Speaker 6 (33:20):
Tiger Bockmeyer, he's gonna play a Rod's very sure about that.
That's four guys right there, and no five guys because
you have Parker Kingston. Sorry, I forget about that. Parker
has been out there a lot whatever, but Parker was
out there today. Well that's good. Yeah, I missed the
open portion. I met at myself for it. But anyway,
check your emails guys. As I'm saying, but uh, the
(33:43):
framework and and just the continuity with the system. And
also I think Bear's good. I think he's just really good.
You look at his recruiting accolades. B what you has
not paired a freshman with that kind of recruiting profile,
with what Bway you has in a lot of those years.
(34:07):
I would argue his recruiting profile is about as good
or better than just about any quarterback, be what he's
brought into the program. Seriously, what quarterbacks can you look
back at and say they were bigger recruits than bear Backmeier.
There's not many, not many at all. Max Shall was
a pretty big recruit. Ty Debra wasn't recruited. Nobody wants
(34:31):
Zach Wilson. But I think it's measuring up. He had
that spring practice session and I just think that upper mobility,
that potential when he's allotted the supporting cast, he has
the opportunity to work with them. You're just seeing improvements
day by day where there's a degree of comfort with
(34:51):
what bee what he's doing, where there's at relative to
other years.
Speaker 4 (34:55):
With all that going into it.
Speaker 5 (34:57):
Yeah, it's it's one of those those situations where and
by the way, like I said, I still think there
is a little bit of a quarterback competition occurring.
Speaker 3 (35:07):
I am it's not over.
Speaker 5 (35:09):
I'm saying eighty percent, you know, eighty percent confidence level
that I think it will be bare.
Speaker 4 (35:14):
Hey, that's down for eighty five he said on Tuesday.
Speaker 3 (35:16):
Eighty eighty five and kind of go back and forth there,
it's like eighty eighty five under the lights of level.
You know.
Speaker 5 (35:25):
It's like last time Gary Bohannon was seemingly in the
lead after two two and a half weeks and then
they played another scrimmage and he threw He threw like
four picks and he dropped out of the QB one slot,
Like you can't throw the ball away that many times
and not have some sort of a reprimand. And Jake
(35:48):
came on strong in the back half and ended up
winning the job and didn't didn't wasn't unseated from that.
So McKay very well could start slinging it and he
actually looked pretty good.
Speaker 3 (35:58):
He was spinning it.
Speaker 5 (35:59):
McKay can can throw the ball, he can.
Speaker 3 (36:05):
He can rip.
Speaker 6 (36:06):
Here's the argument against McKay when you look at the
framework that you just provided between Gary Bohannen and Jake Redslop,
which of those two had topped out and which one
had the potential for better mobility. Jake Renslop was the
guy with more potential. He was still kind of new.
He only started three games carry board games, yeah, four games.
(36:28):
Whatever point remain is the same. Bear absolutely has the
potential for better mobility. The accelerator process and the fact
that they're competing and they're on solid ground right now.
How much better is McKay going to be from now
and how much better is Bear going to be? McCay's
had more than a year within the program. He has
(36:49):
collegiate starting experience. I don't want to say he's topped out.
Everyone has the potential to improve, but Bear's got I'll
argue all day a Bear house the opportunity to grow
a lot more than.
Speaker 4 (37:03):
Mekaida's at this stage. And the fact that they're equal.
Speaker 6 (37:06):
We know that Bear has better athletic a better athletic profile,
He's bigger, he moves at least as well, and he
has a better arm. I would argue it's going to
move that way. But here's the thing that I rest
on more than any other. Bear smart. He's a very
(37:27):
very smart guy. You look at a guy like Emerson Gileman.
No one wants to hear about Emerson Gileman when he
was on this program. By the way he conducted himself
and how intelligent he is, I regard him. No, this
is a real thing. This guy isn't just brought in
to take up a green shirt. In that depth, this
is a real thing. I put a lot of stock
in intelligence at the quarterback position.
Speaker 4 (37:49):
Overachievers.
Speaker 6 (37:50):
That's the Bockmeyer family, that's Bear Bachmeier, and I think
what he's done that first practice. I should have put
more stock into what I was seeing than I did
at the time, because we're a true freshman to go
out there a second day of practice and able to
do anything that's big. It is that's big, because usually
they're overwhelmed. Usually it's like, now, okay, just stand back
(38:14):
to drills. Maybe it we'll work you back in two
weeks from now. It's just too fast for you. No,
he's adjusted, and again he had spring practice with Stanford
that helped tremendously. But given the opportunity and how each
is going to improve from here on out, it's hard
for me to believe that McKay's suddenly gonna get on
his horse and like, Nope, here we go.
Speaker 4 (38:35):
Maybe something click. I don't know.
Speaker 6 (38:36):
I don't want to put that past anyone, but it's
a hard argument to make that he's taking the framework
that they're basically on equal puting right now, that the
McCay's going to show more progression from now here on
in than bear Bachmeyer.
Speaker 5 (38:49):
What's your win loss prediction project prediction with bear Bachmeyer
at the helmetf he's your quarterback?
Speaker 4 (38:56):
Seven and five?
Speaker 3 (38:58):
Really seven and five?
Speaker 4 (38:59):
I'm at seven and five?
Speaker 3 (39:00):
Seven man says.
Speaker 5 (39:03):
So even though the supporting cast is what it is,
that's justification too, to beause there's going to be growing pains,
and when you look at the Big Twelve, it's a
very competitive and just the slightest thing can.
Speaker 6 (39:16):
Overturn everything in this conference. We know this, and it
is fraught. It is chalk full with starting quarterbacks. I
take Iowa State. No one's thinking about Iowa State, which
is just nuts to me. They have nine returning your
stars on offense. They have Rock Gobeck back, that guy's good,
and the fact that they're fifth, they're picked finished Smith.
(39:38):
It's just hard for me to believe the bee Way's
gonna have enough to overtake what this conference is and
what it's going to present week in and week out.
Speaker 4 (39:46):
It's still going to be behind it. Even if Bear suffices.
Speaker 6 (39:50):
I don't want to make a definitive statement because he's
exceeded every expectation so far and he might do so again.
But it's it's hard to believe the b way You's
offense is going to be up to par what's going
to be presented to them in the Big Twelve during
conference play. It might be I'm not going to say
that's not going to be a thing, but running back
depth still worries me, and and just the lumps the
(40:13):
bear botmer is going to take throughout the season that
that that could be a thing.
Speaker 5 (40:17):
Just so you know, the poll of eight, I'm pretty
certain b YU has never won ten plus games. I'm
positive being led by a true freshman, a red shirt
or just red shirt for.
Speaker 3 (40:33):
True freshman.
Speaker 4 (40:34):
There haven't been a lot of freshmens that have started
a rich shirt. No, no, no, he had he had a.
Speaker 5 (40:41):
Four year, a full year red shirt sophomore.
Speaker 8 (40:46):
That's the only one. This comes close to my mind
I could think about.
Speaker 6 (40:49):
That's a sophomore sophomore when he got to ten games,
started one game as a freshman, say it, Tian Max.
Speaker 8 (40:55):
The only ones, but there are sophomore so never.
Speaker 5 (40:59):
It was John Walsh. No, John watsh was in ninety four.
He was a senior senor. No, I don't think this
has ever happened before.
Speaker 7 (41:06):
No, I'm gonna say, I'm gonna say eight and four.
I don't know about eight, seven and five. I can
I can do.
Speaker 6 (41:12):
Seven and five is optimistic? I mean, I mean Creus
over there giveing me a look like a no I
think that's I think that's a good season.
Speaker 3 (41:24):
I still want to get to eight eight wins.
Speaker 5 (41:26):
So maybe if you gober, if you go seven and
five and you win a bowl game, then you're like, Okay,
the solid season.
Speaker 8 (41:33):
You gotta go eight and five.
Speaker 5 (41:34):
That's quota quotas eight wins on a season that'd be
white quotas eight wins in the season. You got to
you gotta get eight wins. Otherwise it's a failed season.
You go seven to six.
Speaker 3 (41:43):
No failed.
Speaker 5 (41:44):
Wow, that's the quote failed eight eight and five. Quota
eight and five is quoted for Cougar fans. I'm telling

list has been dropped. Okay, my guy Bill Conley does
a fantastic job, marvelous job breaking all this stuff down.
Speaker 3 (44:07):
I love Bill Conley, and you know.
Speaker 5 (44:10):
BYU is a team that deserves some SP plus respect.
Last year, I think they ended up in the top forty,
top twenty five. Actually in splus, I think it was
seventeenth overall. The preseason sp plus projection puts him at
(44:31):
thirty six overall, just behind Baylor, Arkansas, and Boise State.
Now sp plus is an efficiency rating breaks down offense, defense,
and special teams to a model that I think accurately
depicts who a college football team is and is going
(44:52):
to be. I think Bill Conley projects quite accurately using
advanced analytics. So currently at thirty six, Look, if you're
the thirty six best team in the country, that puts
you in that nine win mark, you may go eight
and four in the regular season with an additional winn
(45:15):
in a bowl game. Wouldn't be too bad, wouldn't be
too shabby with a true freshman quarterback that could be
trodden out and leading the Cougars to glory and victory.
But granted, Cougar Nation, I don't think ten wins has
ever been achieved when you trot out a true freshman
(45:35):
to be your quarterback. So I don't know if you
should have that as your ceiling of ten wins just yet.
Speaker 3 (45:41):
I'm sitting at nine and three.
Speaker 5 (45:45):
Is my ceiling for the regular season, and you know
I'm hesitant to even go there. Okay, it'll be a
difficult task. So sp plus Bill Conley puts b YU
at thirty six, right behind them Washington with Scott Unson,
Florida State, and Minnesota round out your top forty. The
Ohio State's at one, Alabama's two, Georgia three, Penn State four,
(46:08):
Texas is five, Notre Dame six, Oregonish seventh, Michigan eighth, Ole,
Miss nine, and Clemson round out the top ten. At eleven,
you have LSU twelve, Tennessee, Texas A and m at thirteen.
The most overrity team in college football Miami at fourteen,
Oklahoma fifteen, Florida sixteen, South Carolina six seventeen, Kansas State eighteen,
(46:33):
SMU nineteen ok SMU, Missouri twenty, USC Auburn, Indiana, Louisville,
and Iowa.
Speaker 3 (46:40):
You're twenty one through twenty five.
Speaker 5 (46:42):
Utah's at twenty six, Illinois twenty seven, TSU twenty eight,
Texas Tech twenty nine, Arizona State at thirty BO You're
coming at thirty six. Year Reaction Ronald SP plus is
a metric that we use every single week on the
show to see where BYU currently sits among six peers
and the preseason evaluation. Advanced Analytics per Bill Conley of
(47:06):
ESPN says b Way's the thirty sixth best team in
the country.
Speaker 7 (47:09):
UH definitely gonna have that Bill on the show to
talk about this as my idea that came to mind.
Speaker 8 (47:12):
You know, the produc inside.
Speaker 7 (47:14):
But I mean losing Jake Retz laugh, thirty thirty six
is not too bad, right. We really don't know where
they're going to be at. Ben I said, my floor
is seven and five and that you know the ceiling
is nine to three. And the reason why I believe
that is you're getting You're gonna go through and OO
to start non conference, and I believe Bear can get
(47:34):
you four games in the Big twelve. He's named the starter,
which I believe he will be. I think you can
get Colorado, West, Virginia, Arizona, and then you look at
Cincinnati and UC if those are teams that you should beat,
you get some of those at home, and they haven't
been good football teams lately, right, So I think you
can get those And I what in people are gonna
give me pushback when Colorado was nine and three? Yeh,
But without your darn Travis, what really are they? We
(47:56):
don't know all of that's going on. There's a lot
of uncertain I know pri Almost is gonna be coaching,
but you don't know what's gonna be in regards to
his health anyway. Now, to get on a long tangent,
I think that you could go four and five in
conference play.
Speaker 8 (48:08):
I really believe so.
Speaker 7 (48:09):
So I think Flora's seven and five, and Gurney just
said this in the prior segment. For a true freshman quarterback,
that's maybe what's good. I think the standard is eight
and four. I think, like you said, sham old times,
you go eight and four, Bafens are happy now.
Speaker 8 (48:22):
Whether you lose the ballgame or not, there's none here
nor there.
Speaker 7 (48:25):
But I think thirty six is a good way to
start with everything, granted, because that means you're teetering. Ben
if your top thirty, like you mentioned, it's eight or
nine wins. So right now, Bill Coley, with what looks
to be like is gonna be a true freshman to
say you'll be seven to five.
Speaker 8 (48:37):
So I don't think that's inaccurate.
Speaker 7 (48:39):
But I still think with this defense, they'll produce enough
turnovers to give bear second chances.
Speaker 8 (48:45):
Right, look what they did with Jake last year.
Speaker 7 (48:46):
How many opportunities did they give Jake a short field
or scooping scores did they get We talk about the
ball bouncing that way. Sure it bounced away with special teams.
But the Jack Kelly you know fumble in Kansas State,
that wasn't the ball bouncing your way. That's a playmaker
can play right now. You can say maybe TP scoop
and score is but look what happened when they turn
the ball over by Tyler Baddy Jake had a quick
(49:07):
strike to Darius and you were an in zone. Two
plays one play. So that's just what I believe. I
believe that it's thirty six. I think is fair. It's
accurate right there. I don't think that's bad. But I
think by the end of the season. I don't think
they'll be there. I think they'll be top thirty. I
got BYU. Like I've said multiple times, eight and four
in the season and again, a wins is quota.
Speaker 5 (49:26):
I got someone dmm me right now saying bear Bachmeyer
for Heisman. I don't know if it's not he that's hyperbole.
There's a little hyperbolegue. Guys, come on here it relax.
Speaker 4 (49:37):
Now.
Speaker 7 (49:37):
There is an account that says Bachmeyer for Heisman. There's
an account that has been created. By the way, I'm
being like Utah fans, I'm too much on the X.
Speaker 5 (49:47):
Love it guys, that's your Let's talk about stats segment
brought to you by Premo Golf Apparel Premo golf Apparel
dot com. The advanced analytics gurus of ESPN, Bill Conley
is putting b while you at thirty six in the country,
even with the true freshman possibly being trotted out.
Speaker 8 (50:05):
It's fair. What do you think you think that's fair?
Speaker 5 (50:08):
Yeah, I mean, I think if you look at his
analytics b way, you will be favored in every game
except two, which would lend yours, lend you to maybe
believe that be what you should could go ten and two.
Speaker 8 (50:19):
That's why I want two games be Iowa.
Speaker 5 (50:21):
They're ceiling to me, they're seeing these ninety three. But
that unless bears just.
Speaker 8 (50:26):
A baller, which it could be, we don't ever know.
Speaker 5 (50:28):
I mean, he's great, he's good. He's good football player,
there's no doubt about it.
Speaker 8 (50:32):
It's just taking a snap.
Speaker 5 (50:32):
You're you're expecting something that has never been done in
BA football history. For him to get to ten wins.
Speaker 8 (50:37):
It's a big expectation. I think it's a big ask.
Speaker 7 (50:38):
And the two games you're talking about would have to
be Iowa State in Texas Tech on the road, right,
I think those are the games that would be the
Utah game at home too, because you say all but
two games. So if you're thinking about them from a
logical standpoint, you're thinking on the road on in the
big twelve Iowa State in Texas Tech would.
Speaker 8 (50:55):
Be the two games.
Speaker 7 (50:55):
I would have to think I could be wrong about that,
but I'm pretty confident that you're not say those two
games your favorite.
Speaker 3 (51:01):
In every other game, Yeah, I think you're right. I'll
pulled up right here.
Speaker 5 (51:05):
Per per Bill Conley of sp Plus, I believe it's
those two.
Speaker 3 (51:12):
Road games that they're not gonna be fair. They'll be
slightly maybe slightly favored versus.
Speaker 8 (51:16):
Utah, slightly favorites of Utah. Yeah that makes sense. Yeah.
