Speaker 3 (01:25):
Lots of news and notes I want to get into today,
Plenty of questions to also debate. How about the CBS
Sports College football so called experts predicting BYU finishing not
in the top half of the conference, but in the
bottom half of the conference. I've told you time and
time again, like there's a lot of haters out there,

(01:46):
a lot of people not believing in Brigham, they don't
believe in bear Yu. What are they seeing or not seeing?
What are they overlooking? Chime in. Want to hear from
all you Cougar fans and Cougar Country. Make sure you're
following it, following me at Critle Benjamin and at ESPN
The Fan. My question of the day is this depth parody.

(02:07):
One score games have been brand markers for the Big
Twelve recently, and I personally don't feel it's all that
of a good thing. I chatted with brett Ormark about
it at the Big Twelve Media Days and he alluded
to the fact that somebody or somebody's need to elevate
their play and step up and take hold of that bastion,
that flag and say we're the marquee brands, We're the

(02:30):
marquee teams of the Big Twelve. Which teams are most
likely to become the marquee teams and brands of the
Big Twelve and separate themselves from the pack in the
next few years, And why or maybe there's not going
to be a marquee brand. They could be shuffling back
and forth. It could be a good thing, it could
be a bad thing, depending on how you interpret it.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Chime in on that as well.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Want to hear from you because you have two ranked
Big Twelve teams duking it out as the marquee Week
zero matchup this weekend ten am on the Mothership. I
don't know if that's a net positive, net negative, or
net neutral. I probably lean net negative. I'll be honest,
I don't like two top twenty five teams with the
Big twelve tooking it out and having one of these

(03:13):
teams lose to start the season.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
I like the limelike, I like the LI I like
the eyeballs.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
I just don't like the Big twelve teams taking a
loss to themselves to start the season. I want the ACC,
I want the Big Ten. I want the SCC. Brett
Yormark I think wants that too. We want to compete
against the best. If you have a top twenty five team,
you want to try it out against the best of
an opposing conference.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Chime in on that. Want to hear from you.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Many of you guys may feel it's a net positive.
I'm not sold yet. You may have to sell me
on it. We got a great show for you. Let's
fire up the ESPN the fans starting lineup, and I
can introduce you to my co host and the rest
of the start start of Casjornanigauz for this Friday, August
twenty second edition of Cougar Sports, coming in hot with
all matter of hot takes and commentaries. A former BAU

(04:01):
TV sideline reporter as well as a Utah hockey Clip
digital content producer. He's co hosting today. Let's welcome in Bret.
I always bringing the hammer, Brent Hammer by my side.
What's up, Brett?

Speaker 1 (04:13):
I did something crazy today, Ben? What did you do?

Speaker 4 (04:16):
So?

Speaker 5 (04:18):
I'm very superstitious and OCD when it comes to my footwear.
Those who know me know that I have probably upwards
of forty or something shoes. I don't know the number,
but my wife would say, whatever the number is, it's
too many. I haven't worn these specific shoes since September
seventeenth of twenty twenty two.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
Wow.

Speaker 5 (04:39):
Because I was going to work at BYU TV b
WHATU was playing Oregon, and I was trying to decide,
you know, like, because here's the deal. If BAU wins
while I'm wearing something, I'll keep on wearing that. And
so my wife's like, hey, you should wear these. And
I didn't really want to. I wasn't really feeling it.
They're these blue and white jordan Ford Motorsports and I said,
I don't really know if I should wear those. She said, no,

(05:00):
you should wear them, like they're really cool.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
Whatever.

Speaker 5 (05:02):
I warren to the organ to work the Organ game
and b OU TV and obviously, everyone who watched that
game knows what happened. I have not worn these shoes
on my feet in three years since that game.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
And I said, you know what I'm feeling. I'm feeling good.

Speaker 5 (05:18):
I think, I think nothing bad can happen if I
wear these.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
So I put these on today.

Speaker 5 (05:24):
They they came out of retirement from the Oregon game.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
So we will see how the day goes. Let's see,
let's see how it goes.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
I love it. I'm a bit stitious myself. Let's also
welcome in Ronald the three man wear. What's it, Ronnie?

Speaker 1 (05:36):
What up?

Speaker 4 (05:37):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (05:37):
Superstitious about certain shoes. Uh. Fun fact, I have the
closet in the bag. It's deep like Rob Wright. So
fun fact.

Speaker 6 (05:46):
I wear actually a new pair of shoes to the
first four conference home games.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
One pair of shoes or you buy four.

Speaker 6 (05:57):
There are some in the closets that have never been worn. Still,
something people haven't worn, that are new to stepping inside
l ees. So I started it last year because the
five and seven season was just not good, right, it
was not good, Bob, not good. And then I told
Bill and say, look I got all the shoes and
new they gotta be worn.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
I can't collect, keep collecting.

Speaker 6 (06:15):
I'm gonna wear a new pair of shoes every home
game the start of the season, walking l e s fresh,
you look good, feel good, you know, do good.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
I think we have a sponsor that talks about that.

Speaker 6 (06:23):
Uh huh. And guess what happened. It was a magical season.
So I too, am superstitious.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
It's okay to be a little superstitious. Gotta rep the
why the right way, though. I'd like it if you
guys were repping some BYU licensed Apao Cougar Nation check

(10:12):
why I said I'm a positive guy. I want to
have some positive energy today, I've aggregate aggregated as many
positive Okay, reasons why Bear Bachmeier is going to be
successful as your starting quarterback. Okay, That's what I've done. Okay,
So I'm gonna lost them off for you. And let's
add anyone else that wants to add to this.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
Let me know.

Speaker 3 (10:35):
Okay, four star pedigree wanted from just about everybody in
the country. Okay, that that boat's well dual threat quarterback. Okay,
he can run, he can jump, he can throw, he
can crow.

Speaker 1 (10:50):
That's a horrible crow. You know what I mean. Have
you guys ever seen hook? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (10:57):
Okay, he can crow high football like you. He's brilliant, brilliant,
He's brilliant, you.

Speaker 1 (11:05):
Know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (11:06):
He he did get a spring ball under his belt
at Stanford, so got a little taste of P four
football some schemes before arriving at BYU and competing in
fall camp.

Speaker 1 (11:17):
The first six games are very winnable.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
By will be favored in most of these matchups, all
of them.

Speaker 1 (11:23):
Pretty much.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
You got a week three by extra prep extra, you know,
just kind of reset, recaliberate before going on the road.
He doesn't have a trial by fire start right with
Portland Portland State, and he's already familiar with the Stanford personnel,
their schemes a bit from participating in springball, the running

(11:48):
back room stability, He's got an NFL running back in LJ.

Speaker 1 (11:51):
Martin. He's got an.

Speaker 3 (11:53):
Emerging contributor in Sioni Molo. That's nice deep core of
wide receivers. Chase Roberts, Parker Kingston, Jojo Phillips, all big, strong, athletic, fast,
Cody Cody Hagen's going to be phenomenal for him too
in the quick game. I'm telling you right now, he's
going to be phenomenal. Phenomenal tenured offensive line, experience, offensive

(12:13):
line with a plethora of starts in experience under their belt.

Speaker 1 (12:17):
P four, P five talent.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
He's got a reliable tight end as well, experienced productive
Carson Ryan.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
The other components, continuity of staff, continuity of chemistry, continuity.

Speaker 1 (12:31):
Of culture a Rod Matt Mitchell.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
Okay, look at his track record with players as they've
gone through the system.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
Obviously bears young in the system.

Speaker 3 (12:40):
But when you have that continuity, it allows for everybody
else to booy up Bear. It's a quarterback friendly system.
I've seen many easy tuddies given unto those quarterbacks. Zach Wilson,
Jared Hall, Keaton Slovis, Jake Red Slow, easy tuddies when
you're heading on in. Okay, it's a supportive culture, It
build confidence, et cetera. You got a great home field

(13:03):
advantage too, to kind of start off your season with
some of these games at home. So that's that's kind
of where I'm at with it. Any other reasons why
you should be optimistic about Bear Bachmeyer at Brigham in
twenty twenty five?

Speaker 1 (13:20):
Any? Do I get them all? I think you got
them all.

Speaker 5 (13:23):
Still My all time favorite, though, is Aaron Rodericks saying
on three separate phrases in media the other day, Yeah,
he completes a lot of passes. Yeah, he throws a
lot of completions. Yeah, he has a really high completion percentage.
I'm like, and that was all within the span of
like thirty seconds. Like, my favorite thing about Bear is

(13:47):
it really just seems like Aaron Roderick is just blown
away with this kid, which to me says a lot
because Aaron Roderick's not typically the guy to just pump
somebody's tires for an entire afternoon. Like, not that he's
a rude guy by any means, but like, when Aaron
Rodericks says something about an individual, it means a lot

(14:11):
because he doesn't say it that often. I know, I've
brought this up a lot, but the other thing that
makes me feel really good is just the history of
true freshmen who start week one, because to me, it's different.
BOUS never had a guy who started week one as
a true freshman. They've had true freshmen start games, and

(14:33):
pre twenty fifteen ish the record was not so good
for those guys. But I think that's because for the
most part, those guys didn't know that they were going
to be starting games, or if they did, it was
on a week's notice, because they came in at the
end of a Nevada game or whatever, and then they
have to play the next week. The difference here is
Bear's not going to be surprised that he has to

(14:54):
go suit up for a full game and b BYU's
number one head honcho, the leader at the quarterback position.
That to me says the most is that this is
not a surprise for him.

Speaker 1 (15:05):
It's not being sprung on him.

Speaker 5 (15:07):
And he beat out two guys who were kind of
the incumbent who we're gonna probably get it. If Bear
didn't overwhelming we win it, and he did overwhelmingly win it.

Speaker 1 (15:21):
I and we can't really quantify again, his.

Speaker 5 (15:24):
Brilliance, like, well, I'm sure we need to get that
on a T shirt. Brilliant in quotes with a Bear
Bachmeier action shot, that needs to be up on there
on a Royal Army brand, because I think we are
really under selling the the intangibles, like how intelligent brilliant
is obviously, but then when Aaron Rodericks says things like

(15:46):
he leads in a way we've never seen a freshman
lead before. And I had a player tell me the
other day like he's such a stud, like everybody just
gravitates to him, which I feel like is really really
rare for a freshman unless they're justin Field's coming in
and you're the number one overall guy and everyone knew
you were going to start day one as a freshman.

(16:07):
There's just so many reasons to be optimistic about Bear Bachmeyer.

Speaker 3 (16:12):
Those are some of the reasons to be optimistic about
bart Blackmeyer. Three of the six first games are at home,
and you do have two P four opponents as well,
with Stanford and West Virginia at home, both possibly losable games,
but winnable games, especially because you're at home. You should

(16:32):
be favored in both of those. We'll see how rich
Rod gets his team run, and that is a question
mark for me.

Speaker 1 (16:39):
Rich Rod is very familiar.

Speaker 3 (16:41):
With BA football, having played against BYU when he was
at U of A. Knows their personnel and knows Kelane
pretty well. Knows what they do well. I know, different coaches,
different tenures, different turnover, etc. But familiar with what has
worked well in the past versus Brigham. So those are
some of the things that are keeping me up optimistic.
Let's change gears a little bit getting into some of

(17:04):
these other questions that I've put out for Cougar Nation. Guys,
what do you make of the CBS Sports college football
experts predicting BYU to finish at the bottom of the half,
bottom half of the conference. What are they seeing or
not seeing? What are they overlooking? This is what they said.
Call us crazy, but we don't think the best formula

(17:26):
for a preseason top twenty five team or one that
finished twenty six in the polls is to return only
nine starters and lose your likely starting quarterback to an
articode violations two muchs before the start of the season.
BYU is well coached and filled in the holes nicely
in the portal, but this is also a team that
lived on the edge in one score games. They've done it,

(17:48):
honestly for the last two years. A lot of one
score games ten in total during the Big Twelve, their
Big Twelve tenure, So one score games happened a lot
of the season, you know, a lot of the season.
These one score games could have pivoted the team in
a different direction, but they did have eleven wins given

(18:10):
out congested things are in the Big Twelve parody depth right,
and the question Bay is currently carrying. I expect they
expect the Cougars to finish in the bottom half of
the league. This is Chris Hummer, Brandon Marcelo, John Talty,
Brad Crawford. Your reaction, What are they seeing? What are
they overlooking? What should they be seeing? Brent always bringing

(18:32):
the hammer. I bring up this point all the time.

Speaker 5 (18:35):
This is why we got rid of the Big twelve
preseason Bowl, because you just don't know what you think.
You know, they make some valid arguments, but I think
if you really wanted to, you could find an argument
against any one of these.

Speaker 1 (18:48):
Guys that you put up the top.

Speaker 5 (18:50):
Like if I wanted to make an argument against Arizona State,
I could say Okay, last year was a flash in
the pan.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
You don't have Cam Skattaboo, who quite literally carried.

Speaker 5 (18:59):
You in the Texas game when Sam Levitt was nowhere
to be found. Sam Levitt also was nowhere to be
found in the Mississippi State game early this season. But
my point is we don't know what we think we
know these people who believe BOU will finish in the
bottom half of the conference. Did you think that Arizona
State was going to finish bottom half of the conference
last year because the media poll, everyone sure predicted them

(19:21):
to be dead last, and then they end up winning
the entire thing. So it really doesn't bug me because
again I've said this before, I think I'd rather media
outlets not respect BYU and then BYU show them why they're.

Speaker 1 (19:38):
Wrong again and again and again.

Speaker 5 (19:40):
And I don't know that BYU is ever going to
be a media darling, and maybe I'm wrong about that.

Speaker 1 (19:45):
I don't think that I am.

Speaker 5 (19:47):
But it doesn't really bug me that once again another year,
the same old, tired narrative of BYU is really not
that good. Yeah, Kilani's great and they have some solid coaching,
and they have all old players and all the other
cliches that guys like to throw out.

Speaker 1 (20:03):
But it doesn't.

Speaker 5 (20:05):
I'm not taking a lot of stock in the fact
that they think that BOI is going to finish in
the bottom half, if nothing else, because BOU has the
easiest schedule per PFF, per CBS, the easiest.

Speaker 1 (20:15):
Big twelve schedule. So yeah, does BILI have some things
to figure out? Yeah? Will they be fine? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (20:23):
This is an interesting, you know commentary. Look, and the
negative pessimist and the realist rather, I should say in
me does come out on occasion. I have brought up
the one score games. I've done it, I've discussed it,
you know, and I've been disgusted by those one score games.

(20:46):
I didn't like any one of those one score games. Yes,
the ones that BOU won, but any of the ones
that they lost, They're six and four. Okay, over the
last two years in one score games, have you had
the bill ball bounce your way?

Speaker 4 (21:01):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (21:02):
Of course, of course you have at times, other times
you haven't. It didn't bounce Boy's way versus Oklahoma or
Oklamba State in twenty twenty three. In twenty twenty four,
maybe the ball did bounce BYU's way versus Utah.

Speaker 1 (21:16):
You can also look back at.

Speaker 3 (21:17):
That game and say there were certain calls that shouldn't
that should have been made, or shouldn't have been made.
Isaiah Glasker did not hold the face mask. I guess
it didn't bounce his way. You want objective, you know,
you know stable refs that have great visual acuity, so
they they can call the right calls. Now they called

(21:38):
the right call in that final drive as Jojo Phillips
was held and extended the drive and allowed BYU to
march down. He included Patty to take a speed option
to the to the field and then to put BYU
in a situation where Will Farron could boot it through
the uprights and become immortalized. So I love that, love

(22:00):
love that that that one score game. But uh, I
understand where they're coming from. They feel that that b
YU is gonna they're gonna lean into that regression to
the mean, and those one score games will become one
score losses. They're gonna see an inverse effect similar to

(22:20):
what we saw in twenty twenty three when you lost
more than you won in those one score games. That
may be how it goes this year, but I want
to believe that the supporting cast, the continuity chemistry of
the coaching staff will win out. But the Big twelve family,
I've said this time and time again. You mentioned media, Darling,

(22:40):
the Big twelve internally does not respect b Why they
do not have b Way you as a favorite going
into the season. They don't Big Twelve media days. Okay,
you wonder if Jake Retzlov was at the Helm, would
they be a favorite? Would they have been a top
four team per the coaches, per the media? And a

(23:04):
lot of this was anonymously pulled with Brett McMurphy going
around and pulling everybody and discussing this with everybody.

Speaker 1 (23:10):
So if you're wondering where.

Speaker 3 (23:11):
I'm getting this from an unofficial official source, it's Brett McMurphy.
All the coaches have Byu in the middle of the
pack seven eight, nine, ten, That's where they had him.
Most of the media members, i'd say, probably have them
a little bit, a little bit higher than the coaches.

Speaker 1 (23:30):
Why is that.

Speaker 3 (23:32):
I think it's because of the quarterback situation and not
enough Look this coaches, some of them recruited bear Bachmeyer.
If it was Trevor Lawrence coming in to Byu, maybe
is Bear Bachmeyer akin to a Trevor Lawrence type, a
bow Knicks type.

Speaker 1 (23:51):
I don't know. Maybe.

Speaker 3 (23:53):
I mean he had a lot of great offers, he
wasn't on the I don't know. If I don't think
Bear was on the Elite eleven circuit deal. I don't
think he's that type of player where he's going around
and camping and and being featured and in the limelight,
which is interesting, A little bit gritty, a little bit
blue collar, you know, even though, and he comes from
a great family, which I think that's why Aaron Roddick

(24:15):
wanted him so badly. Aaron Roddick doesn't deal with entitlement
all that often. That's why I think he really liked Jake,
because Jake was so gritty, yeah, and like so like,
you know, he had this great belief about himself, but
like was always trying to overachieve and didn't have any entitlement.
So I think if b why you had Jake, they

(24:38):
would be actually more of a media darling this year.

Speaker 5 (24:43):
Can I pose a potential outcome for you? Okay, So
just I realized this is gonna sound a little crazy,
but just hang with me. Okay, we have talked about
the idea of BYU fans feeling spoiled.

Speaker 1 (24:58):
Especially. We talked with Andrew Peterson yesterday.

Speaker 5 (25:01):
He was talking about how he thought that Bear he
gave a conservative prediction for Bear and fans, Oh that's
not enough. He'll definitely go for more than that twenty
four hundred whatever. I wouldn't take this to Vegas. But
let's remember BYU fans are a little spoiled because they
went from not having a basketball coach to picking up
the number one recruit in the country and then making

(25:22):
it further than through a tournament than they've ever.

Speaker 1 (25:24):
Made in years. Yeah, so that that doesn't help.

Speaker 5 (25:28):
I do wonder if there's a world where Bear Bachmeier
season one is just as good or just a tick
below Jake Retzov last year. Now, the data would say
he probably is going to win somewhere between six seven games,
maybe eight if he's really lucky, but the data would

(25:50):
say he almost can't win nine games just because true
freshman you start week won, it doesn't happen. But I
do wonder if there's a world, because I've thought about
this as well, like what with what would the media
think if Jake was coming back?

Speaker 1 (26:02):
Would it be a massive swing.

Speaker 5 (26:04):
But then I think, is it possible that they have
a similar season to what they would have had with
Jake anyway, because maybe Bear ends up being a phenom
and he is that good Because to me, Bear has
every single tool in the bucket, and he has the
lineup to go along with it. It's really, to me,

(26:25):
just a question of if and how does he handle
the reality of road environments, how does he handle the
reality of a pass rush that isn't your own, guys,
But to me, everything that you would need as like
a foundational tool, the intelligence, the team, the lineup, the coaches,
that's all working in Bear's favor. So I do think

(26:46):
it's possible that Bear this season could win maybe one
game less than what Jake would have.

Speaker 1 (26:53):
You're giving him, uh little ten spot.

Speaker 5 (26:56):
Well, yeah, this is radio, so they don't know. I
have my goggles on right now. Look, I would love
to believe.

Speaker 3 (27:03):
And we'll talk about this with Greg and get his
thoughts on it.

Speaker 1 (27:07):
Greg Rebel is going to join us later on in the.

Speaker 3 (27:08):
Show, and I think collectively the fan base would all
upine that the quarterback play last year was average, average, adequate, solid, savage,
good effort. Yeah, it's like that old sound by good effort,
good effort, that kid, good effort. It was a good
effort by Jake. Yeah, so there's a possibility. Anything is

(27:33):
possible if Bear can reach that. I don't know if
Bear's as good of a thrower as Jake. But then again,
Jake is sometimes very erradic in his biomechanics, which.

Speaker 1 (27:44):
Sometimes worked out for him and sometimes worked against.

Speaker 3 (27:46):
Sometimes it looks sloppy, sometimes it's errand sometimes it's overthrown,
sometimes it's and because of that inconsistency, sometimes that is
reflective in how wide receivers also run routes. Like I
look back at that ASU game with Jojo Phillips, like
do I put the overthrow on Jake or do I
put it on Jojo? Was Jojo on his horse? Was

(28:08):
Jojo expecting the ball? Did Jojo think that? I mean,
you've got to always be expecting the bout the wide receiver.
Some people I've chatted with a lot of people at
the fifty to fifty like, some people are like, that's
on Jojo, Like did he come out of his break?
Did he come out of his out and up? Was
he on his horse or was he kind of going
sloppy kind of going lags of days ago. Did Jake
put too much sauce on that particular chicken nugget? Sometimes

(28:33):
you can over you can oversauce things anyway. We'll see
how it plays out with Bear, But I am optimistic,
as I mentioned some of the reasons why. That's your
nitty gritty brought to you by Complete Circuit Electric, Complete
Circuit Electric Utah dot com. If you're looking for an audience,

teams are most likely to become marquee teams and brands
of the Big twelve and separate themselves from the pack
in the next few years. And why we're starting the season, Guys,
I'm wondering if there's gonna be some separation this year.
I would love to see separation this year. Brett, your mark,

(29:39):
I can tell you on record, wants to see separation
this year.

Speaker 1 (29:43):
And you know who I think he's. He thinks it's.

Speaker 3 (29:46):
Gonna be ASU, his internal clock and opinion, ASU Texas Tech.

Speaker 1 (29:53):
I don't think he's thinking BYU. Quite honestly, I don't
think he is.

Speaker 3 (29:57):
He has respect, he loves the brand, and he loves
you buy tickets, he loves your interactions on social he
loves it all. I don't think he's buying b YU.
He thinks it's ASU Texas Tech or TCU or Baylor. Uh,
you know any one of those dants. Maybe he thinks
it's Utah for whatever reason. Chime in, Cougar Nation. I

Speaker 1 (33:05):
For the Big Twelve.

Speaker 3 (33:05):
Recently, with the start of a new season, I'm wondering
which teams are going to elevate their play? Even last year,
there were four teams, right that were at the top
of the food chain. Right, you could have made an
argument for any one of the four to win the
Big Twelve championship. There were tie breakers, etc. BYU you
could argue should have been in there. Okay, they didn't

(33:26):
make it. Which teams are most likely to become the
marquee teams and brands of the Big Twelve and separate
themselves with the pack in the next few years? And
why ASU, TSU, TCU, Texas Tech BYU UTAI U of A, ASU, Colorado,
Oklahoma State, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Houston, Cincinnati, West Virginia, UCF,
Who do you got?

Speaker 1 (33:45):
And why it's.

Speaker 5 (33:48):
So funny we were having this conversation during break and
the Big Twelve five years ago is so drastically different
than what it is this year. I remember a time
not too long ago, like twenty ten to twenty twenty,
when I was in high school, I thought Oklahoma State
was on their way to competing with Oklahoma and Texas

(34:10):
at the time to be one of the top schools
in the Big Twelve. If you go back a few years,
Oklahoma State and Baylor had that electric Big Twelve championship
and both of those schools were poised for dominance of
the Big Twelve. And if kind of taken a dip sense,
even though we do believe Baylor will probably be back
this year, you look at is it could Colorado be

(34:33):
the big brand of the Big Twelve. They're going to
have to prove that they weren't just a Travis Hunter
should where Sanders flash in the pan, but they were
competing to win the Big Twelve last year. I think
Iowa State. Iowa State, to me probably feels like they
deserve it. But we're using the word brand, and I
think Iowa State has a little bit of a branding
issue because even though they continuously compete at the top

(34:56):
of college football year and in year out, for some reason,
They're brand just isn't sexy and so people kind.

Speaker 1 (35:02):
Of forget about them. There are so many.

Speaker 5 (35:05):
Schools on this list, and then obviously BYU we know
I think the problem is when you're talking about brand,
you also have to incorporate history.

Speaker 1 (35:15):
What is that team historically?

Speaker 5 (35:17):
And frankly, I think a team can be bad and
live on history from the.

Speaker 1 (35:22):
Nineties for a while.

Speaker 5 (35:24):
I mean, I think Nebraska every year we talk about, oh,
could Nebraska could be good this year, only because they
were good back when my dad was in high school.
So and I think the problem is been people who
are having these conversations and they're thinking about the connotation
of BYU unless their team played BYU, they never interacted

(35:47):
with the Cougars because BYU was independent, they weren't a
part of a conference, so BAU almost was nonexistent in
their mind of college football history, which is why I
think BYU doesn't get brought up in this because you're
not only talking about who is BYU today and who
will they be in ten years, but you're talking about
the entire connotation of the program, fair or not, because again,

(36:11):
what you did twenty years ago doesn't really matter. But
I think when you're just looking at the tip of
your brain and thinking about what do I remember about
this team and could I convince myself that they're that good,
people don't think about BYU because in their history of
college football they never really interacted with the Cougars that.

Speaker 3 (36:29):
Much from a marketability interaction, ticket sales standpoint, fan passion
money that is somewhat backing it too, like BYU should
be a favorite amongst the group. I still think there
are those out there that feel like the honor code

(36:50):
the academics will be de terrence for some high level
recruits that don't necessarily align with a mission of BYU
and even the mission.

Speaker 1 (36:59):
Of Church Jus Christ. What I'm saying, so, there's still
some barriers.

Speaker 3 (37:02):
Of entry at BYU that disallows certain recruiting tactics to occur.
And I think those on the outside, I'll be.

Speaker 1 (37:11):
Honest, like like I mean, like.

Speaker 3 (37:13):
There's if you're gonna target non lds, but like religious people, like,
there's still plenty of ignorance out there as as it
pertains to the state the religion. The people you hear
from like Ryan Smith about the Utah jests, they are
having that same aga in the NBA yep of want
of acquiring retaining talent. It's been an issue for the

(37:36):
last thirty years. That's why that that last great era.
And I know the Gobert and Donovan Mitchell Air was
really it was also special. But like you look at
the roster composition that that that that Jerry Sloan created,
and you're you see John Stockton, Gonzaga, Karl Malone, a
Hillbilly brother, you know what I mean, like Mark Eaton,

(37:59):
and just go down the list of guys that were
on that roster.

Speaker 1 (38:04):
It was the composition was unique.

Speaker 3 (38:07):
And then you have a lot of the EuroLeague aspect acquisitions,
the eight Go Fourthtay sevens and things that nature guys
that can fit in here, right, the Kyle Korvers can
fit in here, and they want to be here, right.
Jordan Clarkson is unique in his upbringing, in his culture
that he comes from. Even though he's very he's got
this diverse mindset like he fits in. He likes quiet,

(38:28):
family oriented, like that's what it's about here.

Speaker 1 (38:30):
He likes the outdoors.

Speaker 3 (38:31):
So but a lot of people, Donovan, you saw him
become disillusioned with the culture. So you're not gonna be
able to get everybody right. You're not, no matter how
hard you pitched, no matter And I think from the
outside of his perspective, they're like, well, how do you
build a Big twelve championship team without some of those
high level recruits at like skill positions which BYU has

(38:53):
stereotypically not been able to acquire. Sure, yeah, they're good
in the offensive. Defensive line, they've been good. They got
some good running backs, NS linebackers, that's what they do best.
Safeties every now and again, corners up in the air,
wide receivers somewhat up in the air, you know what
I mean, historically speaking, So that's what I why some

(39:13):
people wouldn't pick BYU. But there's a lot of momentum
going going in b Wayu's way right now. We'll see
if Brian Santiago can can maybe convert.

Speaker 1 (39:24):
Some of that BYU basketball.

Speaker 3 (39:28):
Momentum into and funnel that into BAU football momentum.

Speaker 1 (39:33):
See how that plays out.

Speaker 3 (39:34):
I think Kansas State is a low key dark horse
here to become a brand, a powerhouse. I love the
culture that coach Climbing has created there. Look at they
got they got Avery Johnson there. They have a marquee
personality and player in Avery Johnson. People want to market
and people want to talk about them. The hair he

(39:55):
looks like sunshine, right, you know what I mean? There's
a lot there. Remember b why you had Taysum. It's
not the same vibe, but like it, there's some similar vibe,
Like Taysom could take over a game and electrify, you know,
an audience.

Speaker 1 (40:14):
Just we talk about brilliance.

Speaker 3 (40:16):
It's like his some of his unique singular skill sets
were marketable and that's why he was kind of trending
before his injury to become a Heisman candidate in that
two thousand and fourteen season. I believe before he got injured.
Versus Utah State, I'm not all in on Oklahoma State.

Speaker 1 (40:41):
I don't doubt Mike Dyund.

Speaker 3 (40:43):
I don't know, and he still has some vigor and
vim and pep in them, but I think he may
be in the twilight.

Speaker 1 (40:49):
I'm not gonna count on him.

Speaker 3 (40:51):
Utah is intriguing to me because, uh, you know, even
though Kyle Whittingham's gonna step down here in the years
to come, I don't know what's going to happen with
Morgan Scally. I think the culture still is going to
be maintained. And I'm also kind of concerned that they
co go and try to target Jay Hill.

Speaker 1 (41:13):
You know, that's one of my biggest fears right.

Speaker 3 (41:17):
The only thing that gives me hope in that regard
is that Kyle Whittingham chose Kalani to be his DC,
and then he chose Morgan Scali to be his DC.

Speaker 1 (41:28):
And where did Jay go? Jay went to Weaver to
be the head coach, So.

Speaker 3 (41:34):
You know, and would you rather be the head coach
in waiting maybe at BYU or the head coach in
waiting to get Utah?

Speaker 1 (41:39):
He's a Utah man, So I don't know. I go
back and forth with it.

Speaker 3 (41:44):
I hope there's like some disgruntled like almost like I
I'm like, I'm not going to coach for you, Morgan,
but he's got a great relationship. But I'm sure with
him anyway. But I think Utah should be in that conversation.

Speaker 1 (41:55):
I really do.

Speaker 3 (41:55):
I think Kansas State Utah are going to be in
the conversation.

Speaker 1 (42:00):
Issue you have to have issue.

Speaker 3 (42:01):
In the conversation with Kenny Dillingghan, because he understands his market,
he understands his demographic, he understands in the town he
can acquire. He is a player's coach, and so the
players coach with Tempe.

Speaker 1 (42:12):
Tempe's a lively place. The summer months are hot.

Speaker 3 (42:14):
So that's why they go up to flag Staff and
Prescott and Pine Top and you know, I don't know
where they did their preseason, you know, fall camp or whatever,
but man, it's a lively place. The winters are fantastic.
In Arizona, Phoenix, Metro Tempe. It's a fun place to be.
There's a lot of shopping, Scotts s Tales not too far.
I remember talking with John Beck, like, I mean, he's

(42:36):
an Arizona boy. A issue is a fun place to be.
There's also a lot of laciviousness and uh partying and
you know, all mannered of hedonism at debauchery.

Speaker 1 (42:46):
But you know, some people like that.

Speaker 5 (42:49):
I think the hard part for me with ASU is
ASU feels more barstool sports than it does IBM. What
I mean by that is like, yes, barstool in Arizona
State will always be big, but I don't know if
that's when you're in your forties and fifties and you
want to be the CEO of a big company. I
don't know that barstool and the ASU are where you

(43:10):
want to hang your hat as the pinnacle of your career.
And there are parts of me that and look and
we know Kenny Dillingham's all in. He's an ASU guy. However,
Kenny Dillingham feels like the next Dan Lanning, where like
that next guy who takes a job at one of
the big marquee programs. We're talking about marque programs today.

Speaker 1 (43:32):
I don't know. I think Kellying Dillingham is so good
at his job.

Speaker 5 (43:37):
I think there's a possibility that he doesn't hang out
at ASU for forever, and that would be what would
burst their bubble to becoming the marquee program in the
Big twelve, because I could see Kenny Dillingham he has
a couple more good years at ASU and then eventually
one of those big the Michigan's or that carousel with
those big programs, somebody moves out and Kenny Dillingham's slide

(44:00):
into there.

Speaker 1 (44:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (44:02):
I just think ASU is in Kenny, like I'd play
for that man, Like he's fun to play for, and
he's extremely articulate, and he's passionate, and he's competitive, and
he connects with the kids.

Speaker 1 (44:16):
I think ASU is going to be good.

Speaker 3 (44:19):
I'm not the reason why I'm not sold on Colorado
right now in becoming a top four brand and marquee
team is because I just think it's very difficult to
recruit great offensive and defensive linemen to Colorado and Boulder,
and he's gonna take a lot of like resources to
bring guys in in order for them to win the
trench warfare game that is going to that's going to

(44:41):
occur in.

Speaker 1 (44:42):
The Big twelve sec Big ten.

Speaker 3 (44:44):
If you want to compete there, I think you will
always be able to connect with the skill guys and
even quarterbacks, and he's gonna pitch him on things and
being a part of the Prime brand, that is a
great opportunity. But like once again, culturally, you know, we
just had Isaiah Jadah. Isaiah is our starting left tackle.

Speaker 1 (45:05):
He was at.

Speaker 3 (45:05):
Colorado, he was recruited to Colorado. He didn't like the
culture when he got there. And he's not the only
guy to say that he.

Speaker 1 (45:12):
Doesn't like the culture. He doesn't like the football culture.

Speaker 3 (45:14):
So if you're the if you have ever interacted with Isaiah,
and you get a lot of offensive linemen that are
probably similar in demeanor and personality, they're not about that.
And even defensive linemen they're not always about that. They're
just not And so I just don't see a sustainable
unless unless Prime really brings in some like if he

(45:36):
got like Jeff Grimes type of offensive line coach, right,
or you're gonna have to really get a talented offensive lineman,
defensive lineman coach with a robust resume and pay him
more than what he could get in the SEC, in
the Big Ten and even the you know, and I
don't know if that's possible. I don't know if it is.
I think there's gonna be some struggles there. I think

(45:58):
Baylor is actually an intriguing team. They've struggled offensively, and
they have a quarterback. When they have quarterback play, they're good.
I mean, Baylor's not too far off from GB three,
Ronald's favorite player over the last fifteen years in BWAU
football history, you know, should have been the starting quarterback.
He still still get choked up about it. He said, Imagine,

(46:20):
we wouldn't be in this situation maybe if a g
if GB three was our quarterback in two thousand, twenty
twenty twenty three or twenty twenty four. Excuse me, we
wouldn't be in the situation. Possibly anyway, chime.

Speaker 1 (46:34):
In on it.

Speaker 3 (46:35):
Texas Tech has the most money right now, they got
oil money. B YU definitely has tech money. That's fine.
The NIL space is going to be powerful. But Texas
Tech is actually.

Speaker 1 (46:45):
The team that.

Speaker 3 (46:48):
I would say may become the favorite to become that
that that that marqueep ran because they are investing so
aggressively in their program.

Speaker 1 (46:57):
Chime in on it.

Speaker 3 (46:58):

your QB two? QB three? Don't know it's slipt for
grab us Anyway.

Speaker 6 (49:59):
The point is is that it's about a week until
kickoff six pm Mountain time, Portland State Day. Some booboo
what is it dudooe Stevens and booboo Jones or whatever
Brian Logan will say to they, so poo poo right,
thirty five point favorite, well BYU is in that game
A week away, Brett, seven days, twenty two hours.

Speaker 1 (50:20):
They're gonna be able to sleep this next week.

Speaker 5 (50:22):
Now that we're so close, I'm getting greedy because I've
already moved on to the Monday after Portland State.

Speaker 1 (50:30):
Oh no, he's looking ahead to Stanford. I'm looking ahead, okay.

Speaker 6 (50:33):
I'll started planning the show for Stafford only because.

Speaker 1 (50:38):
I just sit there and I think, and maybe I'm wrong.

Speaker 5 (50:42):
You tell me, okay, how much can we possibly learn
from ba Verus Portland State? To me, the only thing
you learn against Portland State is if you suck, you
don't really learn if you're average, and you don't really
learn if you're great. All you do is learn if
you suck, and if you suck, it's because you struggled
against Portland State.

Speaker 1 (51:01):
I don't think they're going to struggle, but they have.

Speaker 6 (51:04):
There have been issues in the past with BYU and
Portland State.

Speaker 1 (51:08):
So look, if they win by fifty.

Speaker 5 (51:13):
That doesn't tell me whether or not they're average or
they're great, because both great or average teams.

Speaker 1 (51:19):
Would do both of those things.

Speaker 5 (51:23):
Even though the reality of the situation is we're gonna learn,
I don't know. I don't know that we're gonna learn
that much about bear Bachmeyer either, because again, the only
thing we would learn is if he struggles, and then
you're like a little bit concerned, which I guess if
he struggles, does that mean that it's just a first game, jitters,

(51:43):
or does that mean that we're worried?

Speaker 1 (51:45):
I don't know.

Speaker 6 (51:45):
I mean, he's a true freshman quarterback. They're gonna be jitters.
I mean, we're efforting to try to get Tanner Mingham
on to talk about what was that like taking over.
There's a bunch of guys, right, you know, we're here
from Alex carressa later, what was that like of playing,
you know, as why receiver, coming as a you know,
freshman medical red shirt and then going to Portland State.
It's nervous as the planet, the quarterback position, especially if

(52:07):
you've never done it before.

Speaker 1 (52:08):
But Bear looks so poised.

Speaker 6 (52:09):
Like we heard it from so many people my interview
with Ace CAFUSI, we've had Shan Simms, who's his quarterback
coach at Marietta Valley High SCHOOLF you missed that, get
that interview on the podcast and you put the transcription out.

Speaker 1 (52:20):
We've heard from his head coach, George Wilson.

Speaker 6 (52:22):
Bear seems that he was always built to be a
P four starter from jump.

Speaker 1 (52:27):
I hate to say that. It feels cliche to say it,
but it does true. Yeah.

Speaker 6 (52:31):
I don't want to be sound, you know, hyperbolic and
be have hyperbole on the airways, but it is. Let's
talk about stats having brought you about bantererwealth Banderwolf dot com.
But no, it definitely is to come in to win
the job the way you did, to be able to
make the throws that you're making. And John Beck said it.
You know, John Beck had something great to say in
regards to to Bear and everything going on. I'm gonna

(52:53):
pull it up right now. This is bad radio as
I look for it, but I agree with it wholeheartedly.
You think about his progress, that he's a freshman out,
John Becks said, if he's already at this level, imagine
what he can become with more reps and live game experience.

Speaker 1 (53:08):
That has to get you excited. He said.

Speaker 6 (53:11):
Anytime a freshman wins the starting quarterback job right out
the gate, it means he did a really he did
a lot of really good things. The coaches had to
look at what he showed in such a short time
and think, if he's already at this level, imagine what
he can become with more reps and live game experience. O.
Your schedule gives him an opportunity to grow and clear
the staff felt he's earned it, so they go excuse me.

Speaker 1 (53:34):
The staff clearly felt he earned it. The schedule's very favorable.

Speaker 6 (53:37):
Like if this was last year, would not feel confident
if you want a job over Jake or if it
had been that close, because you're.

Speaker 1 (53:43):
Like, okay, but this year Portland State, Oh, you love that.

Speaker 6 (53:46):
If you're a bou fan, bo Fens love that you're
gonna go and you're gonna mark them as we say
where I'm from Murk.

Speaker 1 (53:51):
You gonna catch a body, maybe multiple bodies. Then you
turn around.

Speaker 6 (53:55):
Stanford might be a tougher game, but by the time
he gets the conference play, he will have had some
wounds that he can lick.

Speaker 1 (54:00):
And that's the best part.

Speaker 6 (54:01):
That's why I'm not too worried that this team can't
be six and oh by the time they meet Utah
is because by the time Utah rolls around, you'll have
gone on the road in two environments. He cu non
conference in an actual big twelve environment, you know, with
Colorado you'll have Arizona, you know, which will be a
little bit more tougher. And then you have the short
week already with West Virginia, he will have had to
lick his wounds and chopping and grow already, and he

(54:23):
would have had a bye week of preparation.

Speaker 1 (54:25):
This is all good for his development. In my opinion, the.

Speaker 5 (54:30):
Most impressive thing to me about Bear has nothing to
do with the fact that he was a top five
dull threaten his class. It's not that he was a
four star. It's not the accolades. It's the inner working
of his mentality. It's it's Aaron Rodericks saying, hey, we

(54:55):
don't want you to scramble, and then he scrambles, big
risk ends up an interception like that really hurts you
in practice, because I think part of the reason Kalani
said that guys didn't really take risks in that first scrummage,
I think was because everybody wants to be in the running,
but nobody wants to hurt themselves to take themselves out

(55:17):
of the running. And to me, Bear again making a
mistake like that, and then after that, all we hear
about Bear Bachmeier is yeah, a lot of completions, throws
a lot of completions, completes a lot of passes. I'm
not having a stroke like that is literally those are

(55:37):
direct quotes that people continued to say.

Speaker 1 (55:41):
After watching him in practice.

Speaker 5 (55:46):
The great thing about Jake was that he was high
risk and high reward, and I like he sometimes he
was bred farv and sometimes he was bred FARV. And
what it means by that is sometimes it was a
gun sling to the end zone and sometimes it was
the end of the first half versus Oklahoma State where

(56:08):
he throws an unnecessarily an interception, ball runs down the
field and he ends up taking a shot as a result.
I think what you're gonna see this year is a
different version of BYU, a more controlled, more structured offense,
which neither one is a better thing than the other.
But with Bear, it's cerebral, it's brilliant, it's intelligent, it's intentional.

(56:33):
It's it's brilliant, it's intentional, it's okay, here's the checkdown.
It's a freshman who's going to be able to read
the field and go through progressions. I think faster than
we've seen a quarterback through at BYU in a few years.
And I'm just I'm really excited just to see how
he works in that way.

Speaker 6 (56:52):
He's got a new everything, he's got a new starting job,
he's got fans hyped around the new young talent. Got
a new haircutrew how long hair got it cut? People like,
oh no, Theanico made him do it? Not true, Roberts
had Jason Roberts does had longer here for a long time.
Connor pay is that picture Tiger has his hair, had
his hair braided?

Speaker 1 (57:12):
No, no, I feel about that. But there's a conversation
another day and not gonna get it in to that.

Speaker 6 (57:15):
But he's got the hair and knowing that, so people
saying that, no, it's not the point. I think he
just wanted the fresh, clean cut, you know, and he said,
check this out. I'm about to be fresh as I'm
gonna be OKB one going into competitions anyway. Uh, but guys,
that's your Let's talk about stat segment. Seven days, twenty
one hours now, fifty nine minutes and forty seconds ununtil kickoff.
