we're getting ready for the Week one kickoff, but look,

Taping loses its elasticity and tensile strength as you sweat

Speaker 4 (01:37):
Let's welcome in Jonathan Tabinar to the show. What's up? JT?
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Man? You know a little dreary, getting cold in the mornings.
It is it is falling football weather, my friend.
Speaker 4 (01:49):
I know, man, I love, I love that we got moisture.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
I said my prayers all this last week and I've
been praying for more moisture. We finally got it a
little bit of moisture along the way off that front,
and it started to cool down a little bit. I
love fall weather. I love getting a little moisture in
those mountains. We needed to clear out all the muck
in the air. But basketball season right around the corner
as well, not too far off from hoop season. What
(02:13):
have you been keeping your eye on in relation to
the basketball squad right now as they continue to you know,
practice and install and get their squad ready for.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
The tip off.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Well, I'm gonna answer that right away. But first of all,
first things first, Benjamin, congratulations on being sealed to your family.
My friend, that way man, A beautiful thing. I saw
the polls I shared with Kiri. We started crying. What
a beautiful thing. And you know, COVID was a wild
time man, and you know, I know how busy you
(02:46):
are and just things happen, and what a fantastic thing
for you and the missus and the family. So first
things for is my brother, congratulations.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
No, I appreciate that.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
And you know I don't divulge too much of my
personal life on the show. Oh, but I figured this
one was one that we needed to kind of share
with everybody, because everyone has a unique path that they
that they tread in this life. And you know, for us,
we got married during COVID and we did get busy,
there's no doubt.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
And then there was another component.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
So like you know, Brooke had been married very early
in her in her life, you know, twenty years old,
you know, one of those early marriages, and it just
didn't work out. It was it was short lived, she
didn't have any kids, and so there was that component
two that kind.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
Of delayed I think the ceiling.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
And so you know, I just want everybody to know that,
like you know, in your individual path to maybe ceiling
or certain covenants, and it doesn't have to be the
traditional linear path that most people are advised to take.
There are undulations in life. And I'll tell you what
it was so special the reason why I loved this
(03:51):
particular path for us. I can't tell you how emotional
I got when I was kneeling across the altar with
my four year year old and my two year old
that are cognizant and and and they they they may remember.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
I think the four year old will remember.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
They were holding hands across the altar and we were
sealed to them. You know, if they had been just
born into the covenant and we had accelerated this ceiling,
I wouldn't have had that extremely spiritual, impactful moment with
my children across the altar.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
So like I'm not saying one ways better than the other.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
I'm not saying that, like you know, every What all
I'm saying is that my personal anecdoties, that was extremely
impactful and spiritual for me to have that moment with
my two kids in the temple, and not everyone gets
that experience, so it was it was awesome. I appreciate you,
love you, and I know you've always been supportive of
everything that I do.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
And folks, that's your spiritual intake for today. So there
you go. You're welcome. And then I will tell you what, man.
You know, this time of the year for the basketball team,
regardless of nil or not, it's pretty similar and it
has been throughout all you know, the you know mother
and lets say the mother in times of BUYU basketball,
(05:09):
which is the guys are off, they're back home, they're
they're resting a little bit.
Speaker 4 (05:14):
Right.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
You have some psychos like Ritchie that never take time off,
and so they're in the gym twice as much now
because there's no official practice. But this is a time that,
you know, what I appreciate about the way BUYU does things,
And this has carried from Dave Row, from Steve Cleveland
to Dave Rose, to Mark pope Uh to Kevin Young,
(05:36):
which is this time they spend time with family, they
focus on things that matter most, and and the and
and the players. They actually have a time to almost
recenter themselves, right. This is a time where they're preparing
for the upcoming school year. They're upcoming, they're preparing for
the season. Some guys are usually and you remember this
(05:57):
has been some guys are usually changing where they live
because of the summer. The summer term is over. They're
going to go to fall so they can change housing,
they can get some things adjusted. And I know this
is gonna sound weird, but it's just a great time
that right after class, you know, right after the morning workouts,
you can go home and just take a long nap
(06:19):
and you can wake up and then go around and
go hang out. This is one of the times that
you get to be a little bit of a kid.
You get to be a little bit of a uh,
you know, a college kid, right, and so it is
a time where, you know, a lot of the preparation
for the season is done. It's not like the coaches
(06:41):
are in the office all day every day, you know,
for twelve hours a day. And uh, you know, certainly
they're working, they're putting in their their fair share of
uh of activities, but it's a time that they're preparing
for things.
Speaker 5 (06:54):
Right.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
There may be some film analyzing, some scheduling, conversations happening
for the upcoming seasons. You know, obviously I'm not gonna
name names, but I've been in the office where there
are a lot of conversations and hey, now with this
the way exhibition games are played, why don't we have
this in place? Why don't we have that in place,
(07:18):
you know, with with big name schools, And so these
are some of the things that that are happening. And
this is the time that they're aligning on on on
preparing not only for this upcoming season, but also for
the season to come. And so right now, that's the
way things are for bu Yu basketball. You know, school
starts next week and uh, and and with that being
(07:40):
around the corner, you know, I absolutely love having a
football game before school started because it was the unofficial
you know, you know, final party off the summer and
just got to see your friends and and so on
and and so that's where things are right now for
for the b YU team with the status and you know,
in this little break that they had after you know,
(08:01):
summer spring and summer workouts.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
Jonathan Devenard here on ESPN, the Fantok and some by
U Basketball in a segment brought to you by Orthropos
of Utah Arthroposofutah dot com brace up for the high
school football season at arthropros so JT. Who's made the
most progress do you think this offseason within the basketball
program and why?
Speaker 2 (08:24):
So? I have to say, I'm probably gonna go with
Canard Davis, Canard Davis. So I'll say this Canard Davis
number one, Tyler Mruss number two, and and then I
won't say Dominick Kadeem. I'll probably stick with with with
Canard and Tyler Canard because you know, high expectations for him,
(08:47):
but for him to actually be able. One thing, man
is for you to talk to talk. And I'm not
saying that Carnard was talking right, I'm saying one thing
is for you to have the hype. The other one
is for you to live the hype. Right. I think
this is you know the A J the bands, that thing. Right,
that kid talks the talk, walk the walk, you know,
plays the flute. I mean he is the whole shebanga
bang right. But Canard Davis was someone that coming in
(09:11):
high expectations, is he gonna be able to deliver? How's
he going to do? And boy, old boy, did he deliver?
Right right after that, I think I say Tyler Ruse
because the way Tyler has played very much came to
b i U as the stigma of he is only
a catch and shoe guy. He's only a shooter guy.
(09:31):
And and and you know again because of where he played,
It's not like there was a ton of publicity and
attention around him. But for him to be able to
come into the into into the spring and summer situation,
you know, the transfer portal, and to be willing to
do anything and everything that he takes to win, a
mentality that we saw Richie Saunders have the last the
(09:53):
last two years of his career. That has been a
side to see the coaches highly appreciate that he is
highly motivated. You know, people will say he's a locker
room guy. I don't mean a locker room guy like
he's a scrub at the end of the bench. He's
a locker room guy where he has earned his respect
around the team. They have seen his hard work, and
(10:15):
so that's someone I'm very surprised about. So I'll probably
say Ben that you know, those two are the one
that stood out for me the most out of everything
that I've seen.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
I love that breakdown, and you do need an elevated
off season, I think in order to maximize your potential. Right,
we all know about the talent that's coming into b
YU and that that that that Kyu has required through
the portal or brought in as a true freshman, and.
Speaker 4 (10:47):
The expectations are high.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
But you've gotta be willing and ready to put in
the work necessary in order to build the cohesion, chemistry
and culture that a final four team. Uh, you know,
ultimately I would more often than not emits and exhibits.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
I think that's the question. It's not always like this.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
Fab five modern day team that makes it to the
Final four, e lead eight and into a national championship run.
The get old, Stay old, adage is still tried and true.
Speaker 4 (11:18):
You see that with Houston this last year.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
They've been together for a long time with continuity and
chemistry and cohesion. And BYU, they do have retention here
of former players, but there's a lot of new faces.
What gives you optimism that they can build that get
old stay oled culture within such a little amount of.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Time because so one thing I want to highlight that
you said, and you hit the nail right on the head.
We are no longer in the era of basketball that
are big two or Big three can deliver you a championship.
Multiple examples for that. Houston's continued success is I think
the poster child for college of basketball. Flip the script.
(12:02):
Baylor's lack of continuity. Kansas lack of continuity has also
been you know, has also you know, created a very
interesting dynamics where those guys were constant Sweet sixteen, Elite eight,
Final four, you know, uh players, right, and they were
always there. They were fixtures. The same thing with Gonzaga, right.
(12:26):
And so I think d y U is getting to
that point if you look at Richie Saunders is there,
Keba Keda is there, and then you know, having the
understanding like I mentioned Kadema earlier, but he's been a
year at b YU right and he read shirt it.
But then he'll be able to play now. And so
I think your core of about three four five players
(12:49):
that has been in the program, it's going back to
the times of you know, the eighties and then you
know the nineties weren't super successful, but the eighties and
the two thousands and it's twenty tens for BYU basketball
where there was continuity of the roster and so that
to me is factor number one. Factor number two is
(13:10):
the coaching staff. You gave that man a couple of
months to put together a roster in a team last
year and he got YU to the sweet sixteen. We're
now giving Kevin Young an entire off season to prepare
for things it people should be scared, like if people
should be like dang, they able to accomplish that with
(13:31):
him have foot in at BYU and the other half
foot in the NBA with the Suns. And so that's
something that it's also not talked about enough. We'll void
Brian Dunstan, John, Chris Burgess. The entire staff has been
there for over a year now and they know each
other better, They understand each other better, They get now
(13:53):
that they didn't get the vision before. But there's a
difference band and you know what I'm talking about, you know,
in terms of, hey, you know this is going to work,
let's do it, and hey, this actually works, let's keep
doing it. And so to me, those are the factors
that make up a massive foundation for the success of
(14:13):
by U basketball this upcoming season.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
Jonathan Taban, are you talking some BYU basketball here on
your Utah ESPN Radio network brought to you by Orthropos
of Utah and American Fork. We distributed with Medican Sports
Medicine Devices building out to your insurance or you can
utilize in hsa FSA card JT. One last thing before
we let you go this how good is aj Debons?
(14:38):
I mean, you've seen this kid? Who would you compare
him to? You have a player comp what his ceiling
is this season?
Speaker 4 (14:45):
For productivity? Who he looks like, who he feels like,
who he plays like?
Speaker 3 (14:49):
What are we what are we gonna witness this year
at the Marriott Center watching this young man play?
Speaker 2 (14:55):
You know, it's interesting enough, you know for one of
the other one of the other networks that I'm that
I'm you know, I'm doing work for this season. I
watched about an hour of actual game film of AJ
where I sped through and I look at him every
single possession with the ball and without the ball. I
think a comparison Ben that I would say is Tracy
(15:18):
McGrady now the ish the you know, when you think
about t Mac, you think about the you know, Kobeasque
moves and the length and the dunks and the fade
away and the shooting AJ. I feel like, if and
I've always said this, if AJ is able to improve
his ball handling a little bit now that it's not good,
(15:40):
but there's a difference between AJ ball handling today and
Steph Curry and Chris and Chris Paul to have that
thing on a yo yo right, And so I think
if AJ tightens his handles a little bit, the comparison
to T Mac. And to me, I'll say it, not
a whole lot of people say it. He reminds me
a lot of Penny Hard the way because Penny had
(16:02):
that just the way he moves and he gets to
traffic and he watches the game. But Penny also always
played with the ball in his hand. AJ is amazing
off the ball with beckdor cuts, rebounding, tip dunks, understanding
the game and so he's a very unique player. And
(16:24):
so I would probably say to me he is a
cross between t mac and Penny and you know, maybe
Grin Hill off the ball because he's also got the
linked A lot of people think about KG and they
talk about Kevin Gardner and the way he plays and
and even Kevin Durant. I just I don't think I
would go that route just because of the way how
long those guys are and AJ is freakish, athletic and long.
(16:48):
But you know, I think regardless of whatever NBA comparison
he wants to do, Ben, it is safe to say,
you know that by U has gotten a one of
one guy and and something that to keep in mind.
And you know, I was having a conversation with a big,
big donor over the weekend, and it was interesting because
(17:10):
we were talking about a J and we're talking about
you know, brother Gilbert and uh, you know, the just
the educational aspect of by U and n I L
And again, you know, we've said this on the show
so many times. No one is ready for the level
of attention that b Yu is going to get this
(17:32):
year and for the years to come in because every
time Yegor is going to be announced in the NBA,
and AJ is gonna be announced in the NBA, and
then Robert Wright is going to be announced in the NBA,
and and Dominique is going to be announced in the NBA,
and and and Canard and most likely Kadeem and and
Xavion most likely, and Richie most likely. They're gonna say
(17:56):
six whatever and out of by you, out of Brigham
Young University. And you cannot put a dollar sign on
what that means to kids everywhere in the world that
are dreaming of playing college basketball. And so, you know,
I think AJ is one of one. I think he's
(18:18):
gonna have a fantastic senior year, a fantastic freshman year
at BUYU, you know. And and I'm happy that I
get to be a little bit closer uh, you know,
uh to the court, you know, just to enjoy this writing.
Speaker 4 (18:32):

way at Big twelve Media, as we found out that
(20:42):
he's a big BMX dirt track racer.
Speaker 4 (20:45):
Growing up, he was.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
He was like a national champion apparently on the on

(21:40):
and gentlemen, let's get into some of the sound bites
from earlier this week. What was the team's reaction when
Bear Blackmeyer was named quarterback and how have how has
the team rallied around him?
Speaker 6 (21:54):
I mean, we were all excited. We know our coaches
are gonna make the right decisions and who's performing the
best at this moment.
Speaker 4 (22:01):
We all love him.
Speaker 6 (22:01):
He's a great guy, great leader for this offense, and
he had a really amazing camp. So we're all rallying
behind him.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
He's gonna rally of course they're gonna rally around him.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
Up.
Speaker 3 (22:11):
Do you think there's any controversy right now within the
locker room about who the starting quarterback is or do
you think it's pretty clear that Bear Bachmeyer won the job,
because you know, obviously there's still a QB competition at
the two spot tracing versus McKay. Do you think there's
anyone in the locker room on the offensive for deep
(22:32):
inside of all of that, was kind of surprised by
this Bear Bachmeyer rise to power in the quarterback room
sound bite number two.
Speaker 4 (22:40):
Yeah, Brett thoughts, I don't think that.
Speaker 5 (22:43):
My guess is because from what we heard from Aaron
Roderkan from the team was this was the decision that
was gonna be made on the field, and whoever won
it on the field was gonna win the job.
Speaker 7 (22:53):
So I don't know if there's.
Speaker 5 (22:55):
Too many people who would be upset or not understanding
how Bear won the job. What I could see, though,
is someone being upset for a different reason. Because McKay
and Tracon have been here, they are the incumbent. There
may be some sentiment of, hey, these guys have been
(23:16):
here from day one, putting in the work, like we're
friends with these guys, we have chemistry with these guys,
and then Bear comes in three months in and wins
the job. I still don't think that that anyone who
felt that way would be in any way in the majority,
but I could see and maybe not upset, but maybe
(23:37):
just disappointed being like, you know, like McKay and traycon
or my guys have been with them for however long
and it's a bummer to see that they didn't win
the job.
Speaker 3 (23:46):
Yeah, I think it's been pretty like pretty clear.
Speaker 4 (23:52):
Yeah, right, I think he's been pretty clear.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
There may be a few stragglers still that were, like
McKay was doing some nice things, but I think for
the most part, most of the locker Room's body and it's.
Speaker 4 (24:01):
Sold on Bear.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
Now, how number two, how challenging was it going up
against Bear in fall camp?
Speaker 4 (24:09):
Jack from the defense side of the ball, it was challenging.
Speaker 6 (24:12):
He makes great reads, throws a good ball. I mean,
he's a dual threat, so he can run when when
the pocket collapses and things like that. So it was
it was a challenge. But it's good for us to
learn from that, and it was good for him to
be able to do those things against our defense as well.
Speaker 3 (24:25):
You wonder how much more of a challenge it would
have been having a red shirt senior, Like how much
of a drop off do you think there is from
Jake Retchloft to Bear Bachmeyer, at least from a fall
camp perspective?
Speaker 4 (24:35):
Do you think?
Speaker 2 (24:37):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (24:37):
That is?
Speaker 5 (24:39):
I mean, from what it sounds like, the offense really
did put it on the defense on a number of
days towards the end of camp, right.
Speaker 7 (24:49):
Towards the end.
Speaker 5 (24:49):
The beginning was all defense. Towards the end, the offense
really made their strides. I don't know, because to me,
if it wasn't close, I don't think Bear would have
won the job or the other guys just didn't have it.
It really sounds like from everyone we talked to you,
especially if you go back to the Isaiah Glasker interview
(25:12):
when he was in media I think it was last
week or the week before and they asked him. I
think it was Sean Walker who asked, are there any
young guys on this team who are really showing you things?
Speaker 7 (25:22):
Who are making noise?
Speaker 5 (25:24):
And Isaiah, and this was before the quarterback had been
announced in Isaiah goes, oh, yeah, Bear's a lot of
fun to go up against. And then and then he
kind of backtracks because the decision had been made and
he goes, but but you know, all the quarterbacks are
doing great, And that to me was like a little
nugget of Okay, Bear has really earned his respect. It
it's not been given to him by any means.
Speaker 3 (25:43):
Yeah, little nugget from the SoundBite. Reading between the lines there.
Let's move on to number three, Jack Kelly, what has
impressed you most with Sialia Sera and shape?
Speaker 4 (25:53):
Ryan Strather at the MAC position.
Speaker 6 (25:56):
Super impressed him and Ciali have done a great job,
have a great camp. Obviously, Chase had another year under
his belt with this defense, so he's been learning it.
He's playing a lot faster now, and he played some
DN and other stuff at UCLA, so his past rush
ability really comes into play. But he's had a great
camp learning the scheme and yeah, him and are going
to be great at that max spot.
Speaker 4 (26:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (26:18):
One of the things that I mentioned in our in
our depth to our conversation was the fact that Sile
and Shae we were getting the OR designation.
Speaker 4 (26:27):
That could mean that there's still competition brewing there.
Speaker 3 (26:30):
And I had chatted with John Tamwipeyo defensive lineman who
has become maybe a household name at least leading up
to from the media perspective Cougar Sports insider perspective, everyone's
been talking about j T in his off season. He
mentioned JT mentioned Shae has really stood out to him.
Shay has really balled out during fall camp. So I
(26:52):
always gotta take that, and I'm like, that's a Jim.
You know, his teammate is going out of his way
to give some love to a particular player. And Shae,
although was expected to be a contributor this year, I
don't know if many people are talking about his potential
within his defense and so, you know, shout out to
Shaefe for being a part of that competition at the
(27:13):
mac linebacker spot, and I think you can play with
Rover or Sam, you can. You can put him anywhere.
He's a smart kid, great football player. Now moving on
number four, Jack Kelly, do you believe you can achieve
your goal of double digit sacks this season?
Speaker 2 (27:30):
Yeah? For sure.
Speaker 6 (27:30):
I think coaches will put us in good positions. Obviously
that's my goal, so I hope I can accomplish it.
But we have a coach's pastress coaches that have all
done a great job with us as camp and we've
continually trend upward and everyone's got better pass rushing.
Speaker 4 (27:45):
So how about you, Brett Hammer?
Speaker 3 (27:48):
Do you believe that Jack Kelly will be utilized in
some way, form and fashion to eclipse the double digit threshold?
You look at his stats, what he's a food, what
he does well where they.
Speaker 4 (28:03):
May need him.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
Schematically, what type of multiple fronts they're gonna be imposing
against big twelve defense. You have to take into account
what type of personnel they're going against. Right, is it
gonna be in coverage, is it gonna be in pass
rushing situations? Are going to ten eleven twelve personnel? Twenty
two personnel versus certain teams. What are we looking at
(28:24):
on the offense side of the ball, they're just gonna
competing against.
Speaker 4 (28:27):
You think he can get there.
Speaker 5 (28:28):
So Jack Kelly, for reference, had five sacks last year,
which is a lot. That's incredible to me if he
wants to get to double digit sacks, though, I think
through this first three game stretch he probably needs to
be at four, maybe three, because that's gonna probably be
(28:48):
your your easiest competition. Obviously, I do think Jack Kelly
is capable of it. I also think the pass rush
with this team is going to be much improved from
what it was last year. Like the defense was great
as a whole, but in terms of getting to the quarterback,
it wasn't like they didn't have one guy who was
just always there.
Speaker 7 (29:08):
Outside of Jack Kelly.
Speaker 5 (29:09):
They only had three guys who had two sacks or
more Blake Mangleson, Isaiah Glasker, and Jack Kelly. I think
Jack Kelly, and yes, I think Jack Kelly is fully capable.
He said he wants to be all Big twelve. We
believe he will be all Big twelve. So it'll be
really fun to see how Jack Kelly reeks havoc this season.
Speaker 4 (29:29):
Especially because there's.
Speaker 5 (29:30):
Gonna be on I think maybe Keanu Tonavasa might be
the answer to that question. Yeah, where he attracts so
much the attention that Jack Kelly's gonna have even more
room to run through.
Speaker 4 (29:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (29:40):
My question is more based on, like, okay, like how
much confidence do we have on the back end in
order to bring five man pressures consistently? How often can
you get to the quarterback when you when you impose
a four man pressure, which you know he's he would
be a part of consistently if he's a to the
front and a part of you know, if he's a
(30:03):
part of the front consistently, if you're running a three
four right and you're going to roll him up into
the front as a stand up outside edge guy on
the weak side or strong side, you may see him
more so on the strong side this season, then I
could see it happening. Yeah, if you're having to play
more zone on the back end and you're a little
bit more judicious and cautious a lah. Last year, I
(30:27):
do think that there was less confidence in man situations.
They probably want to play more nickel even than they
did last year. But do you have the dogs, do
you have the horses to do that. Do you feel confident,
do you feel like you can across you know your
you're two deep in the secondary and even into the
linebacker room. Then maybe, Yeah, I think I think I'm
(30:50):
a little bit more confident right now.
Speaker 4 (30:52):
I think it's gonna be really close. I'm I'm thinking.
Speaker 3 (30:55):
Jack's gonna be flirting with ten No, maybe a leve
Like it's gonna be close. I would suspect that if
he's going to meet that mark of eleven to eleven sacks,
over half of these sacks may come in the first
six games.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
Yeah, you know what I mean, Like they're gonna come
in the first six games.
Speaker 3 (31:17):
Like the productivity and impact could very well be coming
on the front end, all right, Coming back, What has
made the difference in improving this year's teams Pass rush
cut number five?
Speaker 6 (31:28):
Really working on the little details like footwork, hands, different moves.
We have a lot more moves in our toolbox now
instead of just certain ones. So now we have like
different things we can throw and then have counter moves
off of those. It's just so just a lot of
different things in our toolbox now.
Speaker 3 (31:43):
Yeah, Chad k has done a great job. He's technique.
Coach number six is a former SCS player. Do you
emphasize the importance of not overlooking an FCS opponent.
Speaker 6 (31:53):
Yeah, for sure. This is gonna be a big game
for them. It's a big game for us as well.
FCS players are great players, they can play football really well,
so I think it's a definitely important for us to
stay locked in and stay true to our game plan.
Speaker 3 (32:07):
And then moving from the OE position to Sam, what
does Ephraim Osciata bring to that linebacker and he's gonna
be backing up Jack.
Speaker 6 (32:16):
I mean it's it's a very similar position. Obviously he's
going to be in coverage a lot more now, but
he from's a super physical, fast kid. He can he
can read run well, read pass, get and the drops
play man coverage. So he's done a great job at Sam.
Speaker 3 (32:30):
And then finally, what strides have you seen from Isaiah
Glasker and yourself going into the season.
Speaker 6 (32:35):
I would say understanding the full playbook. Obviously we knew
our assignments last year, but now we're understanding where safeties
are dropping, corners are going, so it kind of helps
us better with run fits, certain things just where to
fit because we know where the safeties or corners are
gonna fit off of us. So just playing at a faster,
higher level.
Speaker 4 (32:51):
Now begel. That's a little player profile.

(34:13):
bring in my guy Brett Haimmer to talk about this
as well right now too. But a certain receiver got
an offer yesterday from b HY you. That's right, Rider
Lions tore it up in this game. A lot of
people are watching that the BYU commit will be a
signing here in the near future, is going to be
joining the Cougars, but Rob Larson the three star. I
(34:34):
think by the end of the season he'll be a
four star. Per twenty four to seven Sports has a
composite rating of eighty seven. The six foot two, one
hundred and eighty five pounder that Rider Restaurants who received
an offer yesterday from b YU also has Arizona State offered,
as well California and Colorado State and Nevada just to
name an other. In Oklahoma State Boise. He's got a
(34:55):
bunch of offers. This guy's legit. You like this kid
a part of the two thousand, twenty seven class. You
look at the BYU wide receiver room now who they're
bringing in for the twenty twenty six classes.
Speaker 8 (35:06):
Deep, I like this kid.
Speaker 1 (35:07):
I like what he had on tape, and FESSI said,
you know what, I cannot not get that offer after
seeing what they can't put up two touchdowns over one
hundred and seventy yards receiving through the air. Brett, what'd
you like about this kid's tape to offer BYU to
Rob Larson.
Speaker 5 (35:23):
Rob Larson is one of those guys who your eyes
almost deceive you because you look at him and he
doesn't look like a guy who should be that big,
that strong, that fast. Especially you saw it in that
Grant Union game. There was a play in particular. I
talked about it yesterday, but I mean, look, the refs
(35:43):
were working overtime in that game alone, and there was
one play in particular where they go for two.
Speaker 7 (35:48):
It's backed up to the twenty five yard line.
Speaker 5 (35:51):
I'm pretty sure Rob Larson, if he wanted to, easily
could have gotten both hands on the football, but he
decided to go one hand on a two point conversion
and put a little extra.
Speaker 7 (36:02):
Cheese on it. Came down with it.
Speaker 5 (36:04):
I don't know the exact stats, but it was something
close to one hundred yards and a couple of touchdowns.
He also lines up at tight end occasionally for this team.
He's got to be bigger than six to two. That's
what he's listed at on two four seven. But watching
some of his tape, he plays like a guy. He
the way he plays football is like a Larry Fitzgerald
(36:26):
or or one of these bigger guys.
Speaker 4 (36:28):
Six to two.
Speaker 5 (36:28):
I don't think does him any justice at all. But
what this ultimately does, in my opinion, is just speak
to the host of the twenty twenty six recruiting class,
which is Brock Harrison rder Lions.
Speaker 7 (36:42):
These guys are.
Speaker 5 (36:42):
Going putting in work, trying to get as many guys
as they can to come to bou Rob Larson in
the twenty twenty seven class. These guys don't care whether
or not you're in their class or not. They are
trying to get any and as many great high school
players to come to Brigham Young University. I think you're right, Ron,
I don't think three stars does the man justice and
(37:05):
if they grade him the way that he should, I
don't think he'll be a.
Speaker 7 (37:09):
Three star when he leaves Fullsome high school.
Speaker 1 (37:13):
Part of the twenty twenty seven class, like we just mentioned,
Like Brett said, when he leaves, I don't believe he's
gonna be a three star. I think he'll be a
four star again. Eighty seven Composite ranking per twenty four
to seven sports in Fulsome, California, Fullsome high School.
Speaker 8 (37:27):
As we know, looks like he's six to two. He
looks more like he's six.
Speaker 1 (37:29):
Four to, Me, brett like we talked, about one eighty
Five Arizona STATE byu just offered, yesterday Cal Colorado, State, Nevada, Oklahoma,
State Sacramento, State San, jose SAY, ucla you and know
of E, Vanderbilt Washington. State it's good that by you
got this offer. Now, GUYS i really believe that you
offer the kid now when he's a four. Star next,
year when he's gonna be in the senior, year there's
gonna be a pleathora of more offers. COMING i think
(37:51):
you're gonna see big time schools. Come and you know what.
Helps it helps when you're starting quarterback is committed TO.
Byu it really does help her when you're gonna be a.
SENIOR i don't know if the KID'S lds or. Not
brett correct and me helped me if he's. THERE i
don't know the populative members in that part Of, California
but that's beside the. Point the point is that, WRITER
i believe will be getting off a mission by the
(38:11):
TIME i think this kid is done or is gonna be.
Speaker 8 (38:15):
Coming that is what you.
Speaker 1 (38:16):
Want you want the kid that is throwing to his
other receiver in high school right now to be able
to throw to him at the college level. Too The
chimirastry's already built to be able to do. That and
again they had a great win nine, catches one seventy,
five two tubs and a two point conversion That brett
mentioned lining up in the tight end. Spot, yeah this
kid gives me a little bit of chase For roberts vibes.
Speaker 8 (38:37):
TOO i don't know if six two dozen, justice but
one eighty.
Speaker 1 (38:39):
FIVE i think he's definitely gonna put on way more
muscle when he gets to. College but you Like BYU's
wide receiver room and how they're Recruiting Terrence serion remind.
PEOPLE i think he was the number, one you, know
receiver in the state Of washington on The west. Coast
Legend glasker a part of twenty twenty. Six very, speedy you,
know and. Athletic you also have Grand limits think as
well You kyle Wi. Kana you have multiple people and
(39:01):
now you get the wide, out big Body Rob, larson
very talented at the. POSITION i love What byu is.
Speaker 2 (39:08):
DOING.
Speaker 1 (39:08):
AP i want to get your thoughts on. This what
do you like about the offer That FeSi just dold
out To Rob.
Speaker 9 (39:14):
Larson, WELL i think it just kind of goes to
what you guys were talking. About Rob larson has a
connection With byu through his. Quarterback that's gonna be a
big recruiting pitch, Is, hey you've had a five star
quarterback throwing to you your entire high school. Career why
don't we make it so you have a five star
quarterback throwing to you your entire collegiate career and make
(39:38):
it easier for you to put tape up for even
the next. LEVEL i think that's something that's. Underrated and
If i'm not, mistaken they offered an offensive lineman from
that same fulsome high earlier this, year and so it's
not just Writer, lions it's not just you, know an offensive.
Line they're going after the best guys on this fulsome,
(39:59):
team trying to get that, chemistry seeing if it can
translate to the next. Level AND i don't, KNOW i
just like the idea of having a quarterback and receiver
who have had reps, together not just in, springball not
just in fall, camp but their entire high school.
Speaker 1 (40:15):
Career not to go too MUCH nfl and don't a famboy,
out BUT i Mean Joe burrow And Jamar chase ended
up on the same, team and chemistry is a real.
Speaker 8 (40:24):
There but that chemistry is.
Speaker 1 (40:25):
Nice you, know you don't get a chance to see
that too often as, well And brett correct me If i'm.
Wrong didn't they also offer the backup quarterback or the
backup quarterback has an offer TO byu as.
Speaker 8 (40:37):
Well Behind.
Speaker 5 (40:37):
RIDER i don't know if he has an, offer BUT
i do remember them talking about his.
Speaker 7 (40:42):
Interest IN byu during that.
Speaker 5 (40:44):
Broadcast and he's just as much of a stud as anybody.
Speaker 1 (40:48):
ELSE i, mean the kid comes in right in the
game and first play goes vertical down the. FIELD i
know it was a plus thirty yard pass right then
leaves the offense like the writer comes out of the.
Game didn't need to be in the game that, long
but it's in the game and he is able to you,
know just they pick up where they left, off and
then he goes for a rushing. Touchdown and then you
(41:08):
Got Brody rudd. NICKY i think that's how you. Said,
yeah he is offered as well BY. Byu doesn't have
any starts yet per twenty four Seven. Sports but again
Also Arizona, State, Minnesota, Colorado CAL.
Speaker 8 (41:18):
BYU i Mean cal doesn't offer.
Speaker 1 (41:20):
Guys they can't throw the, football you can Ask Aaron
rodgers D so they like Quarterbacks Oklahoma state as. Well so,
yeah you like this kid as. WELL i mean the
kid that's backing Up. RIDER i think you're gonna start
to see the pipeline OF byu recruiting out of all you,
know Fulsome california a lot more if you got, one, two,
three four offers coming from a high. School and you
(41:41):
see this across high school recruiting in high school football
all the. Time but if you're able to Get Rider,
lions you know that kid who's backing them, Up you're
able to Get, Robb you're able to get offensive.
Speaker 8 (41:51):
Lineman that's just gonna speak to.
Speaker 1 (41:53):
It Because california is a Great West coast school to
be able to recruit. From and when you're getting the
high level talent out Of, california the high LEVEL lds
talent only helps your. Program so again you gotta tip
my Hat festi's a, hockey he knows, talent he knows
how to recruit. It SO i just want to give
some love right. There and that little insider report that
