Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's chat with one of our favorite guests online, a
representative Advanced Windows form Utah.

discounts for our listeners. If you need new windows within

Speaker 3 (00:18):
I'm doing fantastic. Yeah, things are well here at Advanced
Window Products. Just happy to you know, in honor to
be a part of the show today and just kind
of let the folks know what we're about, what we
have to offer for them here at Advanced Windows.

Speaker 4 (00:31):
You know, he's been a company that's been around for
forty years and right now for your listeners, we want
to do a little special something and we want to
give them three thousand dollars off the purchase of ten
or more windows. And all you got to do is
call us or visit us at our website. The number

one hundred.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Love it eight one eight five zero ninety one hundred
and three thousand dollars off when you buy ten or
more more windows, Utah's number one window replacement team, Nate.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
It is football season.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
And I imagine when you're going about the state, everyone's
asking about college football. What your takes are regarding Utah football,
BYU football, Utah State football, how you feel about the
overall state of football in Utah.

Speaker 4 (01:17):
That is a great question, you know. And for me,
you know, being fortunate enough to play my college ball
at Utah. Seven years in the NFL, I've been a
part of so many organizations, some better than the other,
but you know, this one common denominator to all of it.
In three years in Cleveland, I won only four games

(01:37):
in nine weeks. In Kansas City, I went eight and one.
And all that is surrounded by the quarterback.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Right.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
Quarterback play will determine the outcome of a team season
without a doubt. And obviously there's you know, a lot
of pieces around that, but I promise you that one,
one position alone can really affect the season. And so
I'm just excited to see how you know each of
these schools, how their quarterback play is, what their situation
looks like, how it kind of pans out as the

(02:04):
season progresses. And I tell you what, after the first
two or three weeks, we'll have a good gage on that.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Yeah, last year Utah had to trot out a true
freshman quarterback after an injury sustained by Cam Rising. This year,
BYU because their quarterback was in a bit of an
offseason scandal, outer code violation, et cetera. He's now at
Tulane and they and b YU has to trot out
a true freshman quarterback. Do you think BYU well fare

(02:32):
better than Utah did last year with their true freshman quarterback?

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Yes, you know? And why or why not? Do you
feel that way?

Speaker 4 (02:39):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (02:39):
You know.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
I think the biggest thing for is understanding Klawney and
you know, the situations that he's been in the past,
and just his track record, and most importantly just his
relationship with players. I think if a player can feel,
you know, beyond the football field, the love and admiration
from it his fellow teammates and let alone the coaching staff,

(03:03):
it does something to your spirits. And I know, Colone
is the time to rally around a quarterback, especially being
a true freshman. In that position, you're putting a predicament
where you know, it's the next the best man up,
next man up mentality, and uh, you know, it's it's
gonna be It's gonna be good, good to see how
this plays out, because Kelane just sit for this kind

(03:23):
of situation and I'm looking forward to seeing him make
the most of it with this with this Fristland quarterback.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
If you want a great window company to work with
him to be able to talk some college football because
you're a college football fan, contact Advanced Windows Today. Chat
with an aid Orchard, give him a call, set up
an appointment, get a console the don't want a five
zero ninety one zero zero, that's e. Don't want a
five zero nine one zero zero. Head on over to

Speaker 2 (03:47):

Speaker 2 (05:28):
We got John Kurtz on the line. John, how are
you living? Hey? What's up?

Speaker 4 (05:32):
Ben?

Speaker 6 (05:32):
I'm doing great? How are you man?

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Doing fantastic college football this year? It was great catching
up with you at Big twelve Media Days Big Twelve.
One of the questions I asked Brett yor Mark at
Big twelve Media Days was I feel like we have
to speak out both sides our mouth depth parody and
how great that is. But we don't have maybe the

(05:54):
the Marquee brands, the Marquee Team Jet that have separated
themselves in order to be considered, uh, the the elite
in that elite tier. Do you see kind of the
pros and cons of the depth parody conversation?

Speaker 2 (06:08):
John? How do you view it?

Speaker 6 (06:11):
One hundred percent?

Speaker 2 (06:11):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (06:12):
I mean I think it's it's definitely true, like you
would you would much rather be, for instance, like the
Big Ten, which you know has I think a lot
of stuff dragging it down at the bottom. It's not
nearly as deep as the SEC the Big Twelve, probably
more like on par with the ACC. Like I think
the ACC and the Big Ten are both leagues that
kind of fit this where it's a couple of big

(06:33):
brands at the top and then like everybody else. And
you see what has happened with the Big Ten. Obviously
it's been able to elevate its status because there was
such monster brands with the Ohio State, Michigan now Hadding Oregon.
I mean, Penn State USC certainly a brand, maybe not
the football program to back it up right now, but
they've got five really really good brands at this point.

(06:54):
You would rather if you're the Big twelve, have you
know whoever it's going to be, Arizona State BYU Texas Tech.
If it's a couple of these teams that over the
next five years can make it to multiple playoffs and
they start to pull away, I mean, I do think
that would do the league some good. Now, is it
too late to really do that in this environment when
you have so many of the like huge brands that

(07:15):
have just decades and decades of equity built up in
their brands stacked together in the SEC and Big ten. Maybe,
but I mean it definitely can't help if you start
to get at least some brands that are stronger at
the top, that people trust in the playoffs, that know,
have won some playoff games. I think all that that
could definitely be a beneficial thing for the Big Twelve.
It's just kind of like, well, you're here right now.

(07:36):
You do sort of have to sell what you have,
and so what you have is I mean, everybody can
see it. It's just a league full of programs that
are going to fight each other to the nail and
be pretty similar to each other in terms of resources, talent, coaching,
et cetera.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
John Kurtz talking some Big twelve football, What did you
make of Week zero in the Big Twelve which stood
out to you?

Speaker 6 (07:59):
Yeah, I mean, I think we saw a pretty good
game between KSE State and Iowa State. You know, I
was a little frustrated with some of the the snark
that was out there in the first half, in particular.
I mean, a lot of that's just I mean a
Viva Stadium. They got to get that figured out, man.
I mean, the field conditions were terrible with a little
bit of rain led to things being sloppy. We didn't
have a first down marker on the broadcast for a

(08:20):
while because you can barely see the hash marks of
the yard line. So I think that all really contributes.
And plus when you're when you're throwing two rivals against
each other that know each other that well, the first
game of the season in bad weather conditions in a
foreign country, like, I just don't know what anybody expected.
And then after you know, a little bit of sloppy sparring,
they put a show on really in the second half

(08:43):
and in particular in the fourth quarter. So I think
everybody deserves to take some of that with a grain
of salt, like what the actual product there was. But
to me, the Iowa Stage is such a rock solid
program right now. I mean the difference between Case State
and Iowa State, and for the record, I mean I
picked Iowa State to win. I thought it would be
a somewhat similar result to that. What I saw from

(09:04):
the two teams last year is like, I mean, Case
State's pretty talented, They're pretty athletic. I think they have
plenty of talent to win the league if they wanted to,
but they don't have guys they just need more edge
to them. They don't have an edge. They didn't really
have one last year when it comes down to a
tight game or just a play where someone really needs
to go make a play to stem the tide, or

(09:24):
what it was in this game was all the fourth
down conversions where Iowa State was a perfect three for
three in case State was one for four. Who are
the guys on k State's roster that are going to
go do that? And I think it really starts at
the quarterback position. I mean Abray Johnson by any metric,
PFF grade, NFL passer rating, just looking at the stat line,
he easily outplayed rock Obec, but rockebec is the guy

(09:46):
that made the plays when it mattered. I mean they
both had a crucial fourth and one late in the game.
Rock Obec's is in the third quarter, but he's running
an option pitch. He gets hit by an all big
twelve safety and he knocks him back and leans forward
for like two yards, gets the first down by the yard.
Avery Johnson gets hit in the open field on a
fourth and one, gets pummeled, knocked down, doesn't get the
first down, Say which will about the spot which seemed

(10:08):
a little bit shaky but didn't leave no doubt didn't
get the first down. And that's kind of the difference
I think between the two programs right now. I always
State just seems to be a little tougher, a little grittier,
even if KSE State has the talent so plenty of time,
I mean, it's tough to make that statement definitively about
the team for an entire season in week zero, you know,
when we're sitting here before September. But I think it

(10:30):
still looks like case date right now is searching for that.
And if they're gonna win the Big Twelve, if they
want any shot of making the playoff, they're gonna have
to find that. And that's that's why I think they
went from seven to one to eight and four at
the end of last year. They didn't have enough of that.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Do you think this matchup versus two Big twelve fos
to start the season? Week zero two ranked teams in
the foreign land in the variable volatility you know platform
in which they competed in was a net positive, net
negative or a net neutral for the Big Twelve as
a conference.

Speaker 6 (11:01):
It's a really good question. I mean, you know, I
think it was a net negative for sure for k State,
who gave.

Speaker 4 (11:07):
Up a home game to do it.

Speaker 6 (11:08):
So I don't know if you're going to I don't
know if you're gonna have an easy time selling another
Big Twelve school on doing it for a conference game.
Like it's a different deal next year when you have
TCU playing North Carolina there that that's a much different situation.
If the Big Twelve did definitely get a lot of
spotlight out of it. I mean it also helped to
have Kansas as a five thirty game, like five thirty

(11:30):
Central game that was going on Big Fox to show
off their new stadium and all that too, So it
was kind of like a day where the Big Twelve
got to take center stage. But yeah, when you do
have that sloppiness and it doesn't look that great for
the first part of the game, you wonder how much
good that it actually really did. Like I kind of
leaned toward net neutral, but like I understand why they

(11:51):
do it, right because last year the Ireland game had
a viewership of five million. It was the most watched
cable game of the entire season, and you don't Colorado
was far and away the most watched Big twelve team
last year and they were like in the three like
three million per game. And that's the Dion effect, right,
all those people. So I mean that shows you just
how many more people are watching a game in weeks

(12:13):
zero in Ireland. You just you don't have the opportunity
really to do it outside of that right now, So
it might be worth it to still take those shots,
even if it feels like in the moment after this
like maybe it didn't do all that much for you. Again,
like brand building that that stuff takes time, So I
think you gotta gotta either be committed to it or not.
But after seeing Case State's experience, I do wonder if

(12:35):
they would be able to sell anybody else from the
league on actually moving a home game for it.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:41):
I struggled with this matchup, but I know this is
a Brett your Mark initiative to go international, but I
think they missed the mark by not matching up a
powerfaux foe against the Big Twelve. To me, even if
you lose that game to a ACC team or an
SCC team or a Big ten team or even a
high level G five team, give me, you know, like

(13:03):
at least you know you're not cannibalizing yourself.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
But I don't know. I think it's a debate.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
Some people are like, well, you mean, everybody knows Kansas
State and I programs this year, and they're gonna whoever
loses this game is going to make up forward. On
the back end, I just don't want to see an
initial loss in the season to the Big twelve when
when we are looking for more objective metrics between conferences,
power conferences as are kind of that that threshold, that

(13:29):
delineation of who deserves to be in the college football
playoff or not strength of schedule, you know, strength of record,
et cetera.

Speaker 6 (13:36):
Yeah, and I totally get it, And I think, you know,
that's why I like having that opinion. You'd have to
like what you see next year with TCU North Carolina.
I mean, that'll be great because assuming that Bill Belichick
makes it to year two, which I guess maybe we
shouldn't assume, but if he's going to be there, there
will be a lot of attention on that game beyond
just the typical like, hey, it's the first football game
of the year, and everybody's just absolutely craving it. So

(13:58):
I think that's about as well as you could possibly
do it to shift away from a conference game. And
you know some of this if you listen to Gen Taylor,
Case State's athletic director tell a story. It started with
Jamie Pollard and he was like, I don't know what
game we would do case State catches wind of it.
They come to Gene Taylor and he's like, well, I mean,
IOWA stage schedule wised would be the one to move,
but I don't think there's any way Chris Climent would
actually go for it. And Climent sat on it for

(14:20):
a while and decided to actually pull the trigger. So
you may really just add Case State may just have
to look in the mirror basically and be if you're
believing the story that they tell publicly, it would be
I mean, Case State basically has to look in the
mirror and be like, probably something that we shouldn't have
done there, And that's how this all happened. But you
never know what's going on beyond the scenes. If there
was more pressure from a league wide perspective. It was

(14:40):
really just all about the extra money, which I think
they got about two million extra dollars for doing it.
Who knows, But I think next year is a much
better like prototype for what you're looking for for sure.

Speaker 1 (14:54):
John Kurtz here on ESPN The Fan Big Twelve in Shoder.
You got to subscribe to his Big twelve newsletter to
stay up to date on all things in the Big Twelve. John,
let's preview some of the Big twelve games this week.

Speaker 2 (15:07):
Who should we be looking out for? Which games are
most intriguing to you? And why?

Speaker 6 (15:12):
Well, man, it really starts on Thursday. Like, first of all,
this is just a great opening weekend for Big twelve
fans because you've got football like throughout the entire weekend.
There's a bunch of games. In four games I believe
on Thursday, now three games the team should win. You
see f Oklahoma State Houston, they should cruise. But in
Cincinnati Nebraska, like I think quietly there's there's a decent

(15:34):
amount of optimism for Cincinnati at least in terms of
being like a team that could maybe jump up win
seven or eight games. There's also a lot of us
that hey, Nebraska could take a big lead toward Matt
Rule in year three has been you know, that's trend
line throughout his career that they've become much much better
in year three every time he's taken over a program.

Speaker 4 (15:51):
So we'll see.

Speaker 6 (15:53):
I mean, I'm still a little skeptical on it, just
because we've seen over a decade now in Nebraska football
kind of walling and mediocrity or worse. They'll have a
ton of fans. It's being played at Arrowhead, interestingly enough,
at eight eight o'clock on Thursday. But we'll see if
Cincinnati can make something out of that. They're only a
six and a half point dog in what's going to
be a defect on Nebraska home game. So that's what

(16:13):
I'll keep my eye on. But for sure, I think
the biggest game of the weekend is Auburn Baylor. You
get a shot at an SEC opponent. It's going to
be at home for Baylor. It's Jackson Are probably Jackson Arnold.
Auburn is talking about playing maybe three quarterbacks, but Jackson Donald,
who really struggled at Oklahoma last year. They're trying to
reboot and fix him after just an awful season. His
first game he's got to go on the road to

(16:35):
a Big Twelve team that most people, myself included, I
think Baylor can really contend for a Big Twelve title.
That's a game the Big Twelve needs to win. You're
not going to get many opportunities like that, So I
would circle that one for sure. I mean TCU North
Carolina on Monday, same matchup we're talking about next year.
They're playing it in Chapel Hill on Monday night. A

(16:55):
ton of people are going to be watching that. Tc
USE a slight favorite. I really don't know what to
expect North Carolina. But you know, for TCU, it's like
if you narrative there. They have a tough schedule, but
I think talent wise, they've got a great quarterback Josh Houber,
who maybe a little bit overlooked. Hey, if TCU is
really that good, if they've got that good of a
roster that can really compete, this is a game that
you probably should go win in Week one of the seasons. So,

(17:19):
you know, beyond that, there's still Utah UCLA. We'll see
what We'll see what Devon mper what the Devon Mpier
era looks like for Utah. Is it really going to
get back on the rails after what's happened the last
couple of seasons, And I mean, hey, Georgia Tech, Colorado,
what do things look like now for Teon Post, Dedor
Sanders and Travis Hunters. I think there's there's a lot
of meat on the bone this week in the Big Twelve.

Speaker 1 (17:41):
One of the questions we've broached in preparation for this season,
and it piggybacks off with the initial inquree that I
gave you here about marquee brands, Which two three four
teams are most likely to become elite or the brand
the brand that can lead the Big twelve to parody

(18:05):
of the SEC and Big Ten.

Speaker 2 (18:06):
Do you think?

Speaker 6 (18:07):
Well, I think you have to start with Arison, a state.
They just had a head start being in the playoff
last year. I mean, it would have been a great
thing for the league and their brand building had they
won that game against Texas. I think that would have
made a massive difference. But they're already a team generating
a lot of buzz. They have a young head coach
who's a pretty popular name. They have a quarterback that
people know in Sam Levitt. So they've got the head

(18:28):
start there. But you know, I think beyond that, you
start to let we still don't know exactly how this
rev share era is going to shape up, and what
money is going to mean and all that, how much
you'll be able to spend beyond the rev share cap.
But just because of the sheer force of the dollars
that Texas Tech has, they're going to be a factor.
However much money is going to matter, you know that
Texas Tech is going to match that thing out. So

(18:50):
just because of that the world that we live in,
Texas Tech has to be there. I think b YU,
the way b YU has been recruiting the resources we
know that BYU has, they're definitely there. They had a
nice season last year with double digit wins. They became
a national story starting nine to zero, so there's a
bit of a head start there also, And you know,
you can't forget you. You really can't forget Utah. I

(19:10):
think in this conversation Utah probably gets a little overlooked
because of what happened in the last two years, but
you got a lot of success to back that up.
From Kyle Winningham, who was a name that people know,
it's a brand. Utah does have a brand that people trust.
I think in college football to be a nine to
ten win program, and if they pop back up and
do that again this year, I think it'll be pretty

(19:31):
easy for a lot of people to forget the last
two seasons of what happened with the Cam Rising injury
saga that was going on there. So, you know, I
think those those schools come to mind as I start
thinking about this. You know, TCU being in DFW and
being a team that's jumped up in won twelve games
multiple times in the last ten to fifteen years, you
know they have some equity built up there too. They

(19:52):
certainly could. Iowa State, k State, Oklahoma State are kind
of in the same sort of tier to me, like
just really rock solid programs that everybody knows are going
to be in that eight to nine to ten win
territory almost every single year. So certainly I think they
have the base built up to do it too. But
I'm kind of start with the with the top three
or four that I listened there.

Speaker 4 (20:13):
Love that.

Speaker 1 (20:14):
My guy Michael Luke of ASU, let me, I want
to get your perspective on news. He's he's a a
issue insider. He says this earlier today, actually it may
have been yesterday. It really is amazing. How cool almost
all the Big twelve fan bases are.

Speaker 4 (20:28):
Now.

Speaker 1 (20:28):
You've been covering a lot of Big twelve football for
a long time, right, and there's been new players in
the mix, new fan base coming into the fold and family.
Would you echo those same sentiments the Big twelve fan bases?

Speaker 2 (20:41):
What do you make of them?

Speaker 6 (20:43):
Yeah, I mean I think so. I think it's taken
on a different context than the last le's let's see,
we'll go back to twenty one. Since Texas and Oklahoma left,
everybody just had to come together a lot more than
I think had happened before. You know, before, I mean,
you're in the same conference, sure, and a lot of

(21:05):
the like original Big eight schools have been through a
lot because you went through the Big Twelve breaking off
the first time with Nebraska, Missouri, Colorado, Texas, A and M.
So maybe there's a little bit of like forged by
fire sort of nature with that. But I think it
got cranked up to a different level when Texas and
Oklahoma left, so I think people started noticing it more.
We're also way more online than we used to be,

(21:27):
and so that's led to a lot more interaction between
all the fan bases. So I just think there's more
camaraderie these days because of that, and we're just you know,
let's be honest. I think all that's led to just
the human beings. Everybody's kind of more tribal in nature
right now anyway. So you've seen it happen with the
SEC and Big ten, and everybody's kind of in their
corners more, and it's led to this, like you know,

(21:48):
Big twelve kind of being a wounded animal. Everybody just
like taking up arms together and getting ready to fight
over the last few years just for the survival one
and then once you survived, then the respect of the conference.
I think that has has fostered quite a bit of that,
and you know, maybe like something like Utah obviously came
in I think with sort of a different attitude from
a lot of folks because of their situation, but I

(22:10):
think for the most part, everybody was feeling like they
were basically in that same sort of boat, kind of
left for dead. And so there's this like band of
brothers sort of element going on with everybody in the
league right now.

Speaker 2 (22:23):
Love that perspective.

Speaker 1 (22:25):
John Kurtz, Ladies and gentlemen talking to some Big twelve

many Big twelve teams do you think make it to
the CFP this season?

Speaker 2 (22:50):
And why? Yeah?

Speaker 6 (22:52):
I mean, I think unfortunately, like the smart money is
always just going to be on one. It's not impossible
for it to be two. You'd certainly want it. Your
best case scenario to get two into the playoff is
going to be kind of a redo of what you
had in twenty twenty two, which was an unbeaten team
in TCU going into the title game against a very
good team in Case State and they go to blows.

(23:15):
It's an overtime game in Case State pulls out a
close win. So you feel like, all right, well, the
unbeaten team, you can't just lead them out at that point,
especially now that we're in this twelve team playoff era.
I think that's definitely the route. I think the other
thing to keep in mind is it would I know
there wasn't an actual preseason media poll this year, but
we have seen plenty of other polls done by people

(23:36):
you kind of know who the group of like six
to eight teams are that people feel like are going
to be competing for it. You'd probably want the teams
up there coming from that group as opposed to lower
just because last year I think we saw like BYU
and Arizona State were absolutely harmed by the fact that
nobody thought either team was going to be a challenger

(23:56):
or any good at the beginning of the year, and
that kind of hurt perception wise, not only the conference,
but there their cases for seeding in the playoff in
Arizona State's case and BYU in terms of getting in
with an at large. So you would prefer it be
one of the teams that people think quote unquote are
going to be good this year. Maybe the one exception
to that I could throw out is, you know, Oklahoma

(24:18):
State does go to Austin Stadium. They're playing Oregon this year.
If somehow now I'm not even sure I could tell
you two or three players on the Oklahoma state roster
right now, they have so many new faces. But if
there's somehow able to pull that out and win an
Oregon then that maybe generates enough attention like oh okay,
well this team could be pretty good, and then they
go on a run like maybe maybe something like that
would would buck the trend that I'm talking about there.

(24:40):
But I think those are kind of the that's the
bullet point checklist that you'd have to look at if
you're if you're trying to get multiple teams in the
playoff from the Big.

Speaker 1 (24:47):

Many times when you get a filling done or you
end up getting a crown, those those materials used are

actually detrimental to the adjacent teeth and the adjacent health

the properties of the original enamel, so that can lead
to degradation of other teeth that come in contact with it.

a point today they stopped a little player profiles Chase Roberts, Baby,
what are our expectation for Chase Roberts this year? With
a true freshman quarterback delivering the football to him. Really like,
I think from a potential standpoint, Chase Roberts should be
on track to a one thousand.

Speaker 2 (27:14):
Yard season, which hasn't been done. In a minute. I mean,
it's hard to do.

Speaker 1 (27:19):
Dax Milne, right, Austin Colly, Cody Hoffman, Pooka didn't even
get to that point. Pooka did not cross the threshold
individually as a one thousand yard receiver.

Speaker 2 (27:35):
It's hard to do because there's so many variables.

Speaker 1 (27:39):
Right, your supporting cash, your quarterback, Can you stay healthy,
can you be consistent? Can you get in the year
of your quarterback to maybe deliver a football to you
in an impromptu fashion? Maybe that goes outside of the scheme.
You know, there's a lot that goes into a thousand
yard season. They check with me, rout, hot route? How

(28:01):
many high routes do you see to Chase Roberts, repair
Bachber's are true freshman, We'll see, but we're.

Speaker 2 (28:07):
Gonna get to know Chase. He addressed the media yesterday.

Speaker 1 (28:09):
This segment's gonna be brought to you by Stansbury Park

Tuila County's historic golf course.

Speaker 2 (28:21):
It's a hidden gem, I believe in the state.

Speaker 1 (28:23):
You got water on almost every hole, greens that roll true,
and layout in a layout that keeps you focused and
fired up and you actually play. You can actually play
a full round without spending your whole day out there
either no long waits, no overpriced green fees, just pure
golf play eighteen holes for only forty five dollars and
fifty dollars on the weekends right off the I eighty.

(28:43):
Super easy to get to and honestly, it's a it's
a go to spot. I think it's a hidden gym.
Whether you're a weekend warrior or just need to escape
the office grind, this is the place for you. Set
up a nine or eighteen hole extravagans and put your

golf course. That's Stansbury Park dot gov Ford slash golf course.

(29:06):
Head on over there to have a fantastic golf outing.
All right, let's get to it. Chase Roberts b YU
wide receiver looking to make some Hey, this season for
the Coups.

Speaker 2 (29:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (29:15):
I mean I've had a new quarterback every year i've
been here, so it's not nothing new.

Speaker 2 (29:20):
You know.

Speaker 7 (29:21):
I'm excited to go out and play and we've done
great in years past when we get a new quarterback
and when he's learning the playbook, and I think, like
you were talking about with Bear, he's gotten the playbook
down so quickly, and he's a stud. He's been making
a lot of players. There's a reason why we named
him the starting quarterback this year. So he's got that fire,
he's got that energy when we get in the huddle

(29:44):
and we go out and go against the defense, you know,
he's the one to get the energy going to pump
us up. So we love Bear and we're excited for him,
and you'll be able to see his you know, his
playmaking ability in a week so exciding.

Speaker 1 (30:03):
So it's unfortunate that Chase has had four different quarterbacks.

Speaker 2 (30:07):
Right.

Speaker 1 (30:08):
We wonder why he is not eclipsed the one thousand
yard threshold. Last year he got pretty close. A lot
of it has to do with that lack of chemistry
or the chemistry you have to develop a year in and
year out with new quarterbacks.

Speaker 2 (30:21):
And he's had some great quarterbacks.

Speaker 1 (30:22):
It's not like and he's been He's had to compete also,
I think for playing time and reps and volume versus
some really good football players. Got some highlights early on
because of injuries. That Baylor game at Lavelle Edwards was
an iconic just a kind of game for him to

(30:48):
launch him into stardom, you could say. And I think
that was twenty twenty two at home, a fantastic game.
Chase Roberts balled out in that game.

Speaker 2 (30:58):
You know, So you have you know Jared Hall that
have that.

Speaker 1 (31:02):
He's quarterbacked with Keton Slovas, Jake retch Law now Bear Bachmeyer.
He's had multiple starting quarterbacks multi I think with Baylor,
was Baylor Romney also on that team? Yeah, Baylor Romney
was on that twenty twenty two team as well.

Speaker 2 (31:17):
So anyway, it's.

Speaker 1 (31:19):
Something of note and uh that that may be one
of the reasons why Chase hasn't always been on the
case to get a thousand yards. Maybe this year is
the year because of the supporting cast and because he
is a wide receiver. One moving on a few more
cuts from Chase Roberts, let's get to know him a
little bit better.

Speaker 2 (31:37):
Yeah, oh for sure.

Speaker 7 (31:38):
Yeah, it took me a while to get it to
get it down. But uh, you know, when when you
got a guy like Bear and his mentality and what
he wants to accomplish, I think it makes sense on
how how quick he picked it up and how much
time he put in. It's you know, it just takes
a little bit of effort, right effort and time to

(31:58):
pick it up and be the guy. And he's done
what he needs to do to accomplish what he needed
to in camp and then to be the guy going forward.

Speaker 1 (32:10):
Look are you essentially blown away Chase that Bear Bachmeyer
picked up the playbook to a level in which he
has earned the starting job.

Speaker 2 (32:22):
That's what he was commenting on.

Speaker 1 (32:24):
And look, Bear also went into this yesterday and he
gave credit to I thought it was interesting Matt Mitchell. Essentially,
Matt Mitchell is the quarterbacks coach of BYU. So as
much as we make of the photographic memory that Sean Simms,
the quarterback coach of Bear Backmeyer in high school, discussed

(32:46):
with us in that interview, you could check that out
on the podcast if you missed it. Sean Simms was
a fantastic interview, and he discussed, Hey, like he just
sees things differently, and he's got a photographic memory that
is a part of it. That accelerated learning capability. But
also you got to give credit to your guy, Matt Mitchell.

(33:06):
I'd also say I'd also piggyback off of the investment
that a Rod and Matt Mitchell have always had in
bear Bachmar. I disgusted it yesterday. They fell in love
with bear Bachmer in eighth grade. They got him into
the program and they accelerated his learning. Matt Mitchell now
has been He was with the program in twenty twenty,
left for a brief stint and then he's been with

(33:28):
b Y since twenty twenty two. He's a Wheaton College graduate,
smart guy himself, Wheaton College bachelor's in communication. Back in
twenty fourteen, everyone wants to know who's Matt Mitchell because
I don't know if you saw this.

Speaker 2 (33:42):
Tom Homo, former BYU.

Speaker 1 (33:44):
Athletic director said, essentially, he said, a name you should
remember or name you need to know.

Speaker 2 (33:50):
Matt Mitchell.

Speaker 1 (33:51):
Remember the name almost like Eminem remember the name. Coaching experience,
he was the quarterbacks coach of the assistant quarterbacks coach.
He was named twenty twenty five, getting an elevated status
at that moment, but going back, he was with Notre
Dame as an offensive analyst twenty fifteen twenty sixteen. He
bounced to Western Kentucky as a graduate assistant for the
wide receivers in twenty seventeen, in twenty eighteen quarterbacks quarterbacks

(34:16):
coach to Western Kentucky snow College offensive coordinator in twenty nineteen,
BYU offensive analysts for the quarterbacks in twenty twenty Baylor's
offensive quality control.

Speaker 2 (34:27):
So you look at that, you're like, okay, grime.

Speaker 1 (34:30):
He took him over to Baylor in twenty twenty one
as a quality control offensive analyst, and then he came
back to BAYU in twenty twenty two as offensive analystic
quarterbacks coach and he's been with us since then and
now he's the assistant quarterbacks coach for the BAYU Cougar
football team. He played wide receiver at Wheaton College. He's
from Los Altos, California. Shout out to his wife, Megan,

(34:52):
as Matt puts in long hours at BYU prepping and
sitting down with Bear Bob Meyer and giving him all
of the data all the inside, all the knowledge of
the playbook. Now moving on, Chase, what's the mindset this
year versus previous years.

Speaker 7 (35:11):
I think, enjoy every moment being able to be, you know,
on the field again at Levell Roods Stadium, and to
be with these guys that you know, I've come to
love so much. I think I just want to take
advantage of every second I have with them. And I
think it's a lot more fun when you win games.
So that's definitely up there on you know, wanting to

(35:32):
do that for sure, And so just enjoy every every
single moment I get and make the most of everything.

Speaker 1 (35:43):
Make the most of this year, the light at the
end of the tunnel. He's gonna have to make the
jump to the NFL after this year, no more eligibility.
He's got to have a big season. I think you
always want your senior year to be the best year
as a player, whether it's coming into the high school
ranks or throughout the collegiate ranks, you always expect kind

(36:06):
of this crescendo, this sequential progress. Before you bid farewell,
you say a you to your collegiate career. I mean
I could say, hey, I felt like mine was that way,
felt like we had our best years in two thousand
and seven in its totality and in its ranking at

(36:27):
the end of the year, with a big win in
the in the Vegas Ball. So moving on and I think, yeah,
I think he's gonna have that year.

Speaker 2 (36:34):
I really hope he has that year.

Speaker 1 (36:36):
A lot of your teammates, chasing coaches use the phrase
good to great as a mentality for this season.

Speaker 2 (36:41):
What does that mean to you when.

Speaker 7 (36:44):
You tie it to the you know, just life in general.
You know, you can live a good life and just
go through and be kind of on the fence. But
if you really want to, you know, live a great life,
you put a little extra work in and you go
out and you look for people in need, and you

(37:06):
go be like the Savior of Jesus Christ, right, And
I think stepping.

Speaker 2 (37:09):
Up to that level is hard.

Speaker 7 (37:12):
It takes a lot of hard work. And I think
that's what we need to do as a team, is
to take it to the next level, to not only
be there for each other on the field, but off
the field, build that trust and ultimately just be like
the Savior. And it's gonna take a lot of effort,
a lot of hard work. A lot of sacrifice, a
lot of discipline. But I think that's the team that

(37:33):
we have this year. We have guys that are capable
of doing that and understanding that, and ultimately, when we
do that, we're going to win a lot of games
and have the best team, you know, that we've had
in you know, in a long time.

Speaker 2 (37:47):
So one of.

Speaker 1 (37:48):
The reasons why you love Chase Roberts is a BYU
fan is because he embodies the holistic player that you're
looking for that you can't miss out on in the
recruiting battles. You got Chase, a legacy player. You got
Chase an individual that has been a return missionary. You
got Chase an individual that wants to embody not only
the great football abilities on the field, but also the

(38:11):
christ Like discipleship qualities that you're looking for off the field.

Speaker 2 (38:15):
The guy that can ball.

Speaker 1 (38:16):
Out for Brigham on the gridiron and then head on
over to the local steakhouse and give you a rousing
speech on discipleship and inspire the next generation of BYU
football players to be their best selves on and off.

Speaker 2 (38:30):
The football field.

Speaker 1 (38:31):
He's talking about christ Like discipleship and he's been doing
that on the two point Conversion podcast as well with
Connor pay So. Love that and he's looking for that
holistic experience. I think that's what by you's pitching right
now under Collaishataki. Now, Chase, how do you acclimate getting
up to speed starting the season with a true freshman
quarterback with Bear Bachmeier at the helm?

Speaker 2 (38:53):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (38:53):
Everyone has different personalities and ways that go about their life,
right and Bear's a guy that is very mature and
someone that you don't think of as a as a
freshman quarterback.

Speaker 2 (39:05):
Right. Uh.

Speaker 7 (39:06):
He's got the body of a you know, a linebacker,
and you know he can hang in D one football.
You know, that's not anything you're worried about. He doesn't
need that, you know, growing when it comes to like
the physical aspect. So uh, and then you know his
mentality that he's had all camp. He doesn't act like
a freshman quarterback. So when you go out and you
make plays and you lead the team, doesn't matter if

(39:30):
you're you know, a freshman or you've been in college
football for six years. You the people rally behind you
and they trust you. And I think once you go
out and you prove that which he has during camp,
and I think which he will during these first couple
of games. Then we just get rolling and doesn't matter
I guess the the age or you know, the experience,

(39:52):
but that you go out and you play, you play well,
and that's that's what he's gonna do. So excited for him.

Speaker 2 (40:01):
Love it, man.

Speaker 1 (40:03):
We want to believe, right, We want to believe that
Bear Blockmeier is just different. He's better than the other
true freshmen that have been trotted out at other schools
or at BYU.

Speaker 2 (40:16):
There's a hope, there's.

Speaker 1 (40:18):
A glass at full blue goggled kool aid. You know
that we want to sip on throughout the entire season.
I hope he meets the expectation that his teammates have
for him, as well as what Kugarnation has for him.
I believe there will be some undulations, but as I
mentioned time and time again, there are many factors that

(40:40):
can contribute to his success and he can have a
good season and maybe even a great season as a
true freshman. Now, Chase, do you prefer opening with an
FCS opponent a powerful opponent or does it even matter
to you?

Speaker 7 (40:54):
I don't think it matters. I mean, we just like
to go play football. I think whoever's on our schedule,
we just go out and play our best and try
to get that get that win. So if it's yeah,
Alabama Week one or Portland State, we're gonna go out
and we're gonna have fun playing the game that we love,
that we do dreamed of as a kid playing. We

(41:17):
get to be a Lavell Edward stadium. So whoever shows up,
they're gonna they're gonna get a game. They're gonna get
a team that goes out and plays their hardest and
it makes a lot of plays and gets the crowd rolling,
and so we're just excited to go play some football.

Speaker 1 (41:33):
It doesn't matter for these guys. I mean there's pros
and cons to every single one of these. Like, as
a fan base, how do you want to kick off
the season?

Speaker 2 (41:42):
You know what I mean?

Speaker 1 (41:42):
Like that's a question from a consumer stand, but the
entertainment value is of import I think the hype leading
up to the college football season.

Speaker 2 (41:53):
Like I've said this before, if you don't want to.

Speaker 1 (41:56):
Play Utah, if Utah doesn't want to play B one
in the traditional rivalry week setting, right, I wouldn't mind
that being your college football kickoff to the season. I
mean the Holy War week zero or week one. Probably

(42:16):
maybe it's week zero that you look at it. Some
people wouldn't like that. I personally wouldn't mind it. You know,
it starts it off with a bang, and there's a
lot of hype and a lot of pomp and circumstance
and in viewership in regards to that game, I don't know.
Could be an interesting way to approach the Holy War

(42:38):
if Kyle and crew up north in the leadership up
there doesn't want to c byu W on the traditional rivalry.

Speaker 2 (42:45):
And I do think me reading way too far into this.
The fact that b YU and Utah.

Speaker 1 (42:50):
Are not playing during Rivalry week okay, speaks to how
I think the University of Utah has over the last
decade plus viewed the rivalry. It's just another game. Oh,
it's the in state game, not the rivalry game. We
have rivalries with USC, we have rivalries with Colorado.

Speaker 2 (43:14):
No, you don't.

Speaker 1 (43:15):
What a bunch of fodder, what a bunch of fecal matter,
what a bunch of just hullabaloo? Just ridiculous rhetoric coming
from up North. I hate to say it, but like
I'm a pretty grounded, calculated, reasonable human. Some Utah fans
may not think I am, but I am, and that

(43:37):
whole rhetoric to me is just a bunch of poppy cock.

Speaker 2 (43:41):
All right, So let's get into this.

Speaker 1 (43:43):
What is weird getting what's kind of the weird news
or new news of getting used to a quarterback wearing
number forty seven?

Speaker 7 (43:52):
No, it's awesome.

Speaker 2 (43:53):
I love it.

Speaker 7 (43:53):
It just shows his personality and who he is, and
it fits him perfectly, like he just doesn't care about
what other people think of him or fitting the mold,
or he's just gonna be him and do what he does.
So I think it's a perfect number for Bear and represents,
you know, the type of guy he.

Speaker 2 (44:07):
Is, Number forty seven. Moving on quickly here, all right?

Speaker 1 (44:13):
Now, does it weigh on your mind in how you
represent your faith going into these games?

Speaker 7 (44:18):
It brings the most pressure and but also what calms
me down the most is, you know, understanding that whatever happens,
you know, I'm just gonna trust in God, and whether
I have one catch or nine catches, right, it's I
still get to go out out after the game and
sign kids, you know, helmets and footballs and and be
a light to them. And that's what keeps me happy,

(44:39):
keeps me going and playing this game. And but yes,
you gotta win games too to be to be a
light to others. So I also want to, you know,
be one of the best teams in college football so
that we can have a better opportunity to do that.

Speaker 2 (44:56):
Winning matters is not the end all be all.

Speaker 1 (44:58):
But if you're not winning, yeah, how many people are
really talking about who you are as an individual player?
So I think there's a fine balance there. As you
discuss the mission and the message of College BAYU College

high school football here in Utah. What do you make
of the product that we're producing here in the state

I love it. I love it through and through, and
you see it, you know, at the collegiate level, not
only in the state but out of state. And then
to see the recognition that some of the play in
the NFL, I mean overall, I'm just you know, blown
away by the talent and to see what Corner Canyon
did down in Florida, you know last week. Like, the

(46:42):
talent is here, people know, and and it's starting to
catch a lot more recognition, especially through the recruiting ranks
as well.

Speaker 2 (46:51):
Yeah, I love what I'm seeing.

Speaker 1 (46:52):
I also love what I'm seeing from Advanced Windows right now.

Upgraded as well. Last question before we let You Go, Nate.

Speaker 1 (48:06):
A few years ago on my show, I asked the question,
who's the best high school football player you've ever seen personally,
you know, up close and personal at a game?

Speaker 2 (48:17):
Right? And I got so many great responses.

Speaker 1 (48:20):
You know, you have your recency bias, like Britain Covey,
but then he get into like my era. I played
high school ball in Arizona, so I didn't get to
see it, but Fahutaki and Reno.

Speaker 2 (48:31):
Mahe were some of the questions.

Speaker 1 (48:32):
And granted this was like you know someone maybe BYU
slammed right BYU base, but give me your thoughts on
this particular question.

Speaker 4 (48:41):
Oh man, that is a great question, geez. And I
guess football in particular, right, because yeah, it's.

Speaker 1 (48:49):
Football, right, And this is for you, right, like who
did you see that you just thought they were like
you could have been growing up, You could have been
like in sixth rate and you're watching this happen and
that the player was a hero or maybe he was
in high school a contemporary, But who is the high
school football player in the state of Utah that is
just the best high school football player that you've ever seen?

Speaker 5 (49:10):
Yeah, one person that comes to mind is Alosi Nata
right Washington, Matt And you know, he was a man
amongst boys, and he the way he just.

Speaker 4 (49:20):
Tossed people around and control the line of scrimmage, you
just you he was just fear But then you got
up close to him after the game as a little kid,
and he was just the biggest teddy bear and was
so nice. And I was like, all right, you know,
maybe he's not so bad even though he just tossed
somebody like fifty yards across the field. He's got a
nice so but no Helosi in person. And then I

(49:43):
was very fortunate years later, towards the end of his career,
I got to play with him in the NFL or
against him in the NFL, and that was kind of
a surreal moment. Was to, you know, see him on
the opposite side in uniform and play with him on
Sunday was pretty cool.

twenty twenty five season. You got to replace schdor Sanders

(50:44):
in the NFL quarterback one that was able to throw
to a Heisman Trophy winner and a star starting cast
that's surrounded up. Who's going to be leading the Buffs
to glory and victory? And coach Prime's second season? Uh?

Speaker 2 (50:58):
Now is it third season?

Speaker 5 (50:59):
Now?

Speaker 2 (50:59):
Is it third season at Colorado? Is this second season? Man?
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (51:03):

man third season now with the Buffs at any rate.

Always support local, always support former Cougars in their businesses.
Chat with Jared Bledschell, let them know I sensia. All right, So,
who's gonna lead the Buffs to Glorian victory this season?
And do you think they'll be just as good or

(51:59):
better than they were last year? They lost some in
the portal, but they also gained a significant amount of
talent via the portal, and it looks like they got
a portal player that's gonna be.

Speaker 2 (52:12):
Leading them this season.

Speaker 1 (52:14):
Deion Sanders, head coach of the Colorado Buffs, announced on
August twenty six, earlier today, that Caden Salter would start
at quarterback for the team season opener against Georgia Tech,
choosing the experienced Liberty transfer over a highly touted freshman
Julian Lewis.

Speaker 2 (52:30):
Crazy times up there.

Speaker 1 (52:33):
Sanders emphasized Salter's maturity and readiness, stating, Caiden Salter is
going to start. The kid has a ton of experience.
He's a dual threat. He can throw the heck out
of the ball. He highlighted the importance of Salter's background,
noting that his experience is vital, while also adding that
Lewis would still get some periodic reps. Sanders also praised

(52:53):
Salter's personality and drive. He has a serious, but fun
loving nature. He wants to win on this stage. This
is the largest stage in college football. Caden Salter sixty one,
one hundred and eighty five pounds. He's a dual threat
quarterback from Cedar Hill, Texas and a four star recruit
in the class of twenty twenty one. Initially signed with

(53:13):
Tennessee before transferring to Liberty University, where he started for
multiple seasons. He amassed over five thousand passing yards and
forty touchdowns in college. In twenty twenty five, he transferred
to call roder to us succeed or replace rather shudo
her Sanders. So look, I have said time and time

(53:36):
again on this show that Liberty was a bit of
a sleeping giant.

Speaker 2 (53:41):
They have a lot of nil, they have a lot
of resource resources.

Speaker 1 (53:47):
And they were recruited at a high level under Hugh
Freeze before he bounced to Opera, and I personally.

Speaker 2 (53:53):
Believe he should have still stuck it out at Liberty.

Speaker 1 (53:56):
I think the upside and the support of Liberty is
one that could be sustainable.

Speaker 2 (54:03):
He didn't listen to me, he didn't carry You want
to go compete.

Speaker 1 (54:05):
In the SEC and die a slow and painful death
like unto Gus mauls On there at Auburn after his
heyday in twenty twenty eleven. And then also oh Man,
former Boise State head coach. Now forgetting his name off
the top of my head. Who was I think a
consultant now with maybe Washington or something like that, or Oregon,

(54:29):
I believe anyway, maybe no, I know it's a cow.

Speaker 2 (54:31):
He's at Cow.

Speaker 1 (54:33):
Help me out here, head for my head coach over
at Boise State. Oh gosh, like this is a CTAM
moment and I would like a little bit. Does anyone
remember the head coach's name at Poise State that went
to Auburn and was head coach Brian Harson also took
his talents to Auburn before getting ousted by Donors.

Speaker 2 (55:00):
Athletic department.

Speaker 1 (55:00):
They had buyer's remorse because it's hard to win in
the SEC and it's hard to win at Auburn.

Speaker 2 (55:09):
Let's just be honest. I think it was.

Speaker 1 (55:11):
Uh, they're a consistent program, a good program, but they
have to overachieve time and time again at any rate.

Speaker 2 (55:18):
You know.

Speaker 1 (55:19):
It's it's always intriguing to me to see what Liberty
has done and where these transfers end up, because with
a transfer portal, I do think there's high level talent
that's going to Liberty, but there's also a lot of
high level talent that's exiting Liberty because they want to
play on a power flour level and and Liberty just
can't do that right now. So Salter killed it at Liberty,

(55:44):
they did. He was a tremendous player, tremendous talent.

Speaker 2 (55:47):
Some believe.

Speaker 1 (55:50):
That Salter is actually going to be better than Shoudor
because Shador never utilized his running ability, his escapability, his.

Speaker 2 (55:59):
Extension of play. He's passed the line of scrimmage.

Speaker 1 (56:02):
Shador has been labeled more so, I think, as a
pro style quarterback by some because he didn't he didn't
scramble to pick up first downs. He didn't scramble to
cross that line of scrimmage, Whereas Salter I think, has
a little bit more of a propensity to scramble a bit.

Speaker 2 (56:21):
Now he can sling it, he can sling it with
the best of them.

Speaker 1 (56:23):
But I believe the dual threat nature of Caden Salter
will actually benefit UH. This Uh, this Colorado Buffs team
six one ninety and uh is a good football player,
good football player. You have to wonder if he's going
to utilize his running ability a little bit more.

Speaker 2 (56:44):
In twenty twenty three.

Speaker 1 (56:45):
By the way, if I'm not mistaken, Cayden Salter ran
for one thousand yards and twelve touchdowns one thousand yards
and twelve touchdowns, one hundred and sixty three carries. Okay,
in twenty twenty four, he he that off a little bit,
and he may have had some injuries in that season.

(57:05):
I have to go back and look, but he only
had one hundred and fourteen carries, five hundred and eighty
seven yards, five one yards per carry, and seven touchdowns.
That dual threadability is gonna aid and support what I
believe is their biggest weakness, which is passed pro along
that offensive line.

Speaker 2 (57:21):
So that's a little nova faux segment. Keep an eye
on Caden Salter.

Speaker 1 (57:24):
You're gonna have to beat Caden Salter in Boulder, Okay,
versus the Boffs on week five?

Speaker 2 (57:30):
Was it week four? Week five with that bye week,
so we.

Speaker 1 (57:34):
Wish that defense luck in containing Caden Salter.

Speaker 2 (57:37):
That's your segment.

Speaker 1 (57:38):
We're gonna call that a wonderful segment of no the
foam and we're gonna take a brief time out.

Speaker 2 (57:45):
Don't go anywhere
