(00:40):
it's time for a little Cougar byte. Josh Pick college
football insider commentator has heard from a few sources that
there are rivalry games that and rivalry names that certain
administrators within the universe versities are trying to change, including
(01:06):
the Holy War by versus Utah. There's a number of
games that they're trying to change but the Holy War.
And so I'm like, okay, let's say for arguments sake,
that we're gonna have to change this name. You know,
Ronald had an experience apparently on his play by play.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Utah preps.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Game of the Night this last Friday, where he actually
uttered the words holy war. He said something the effect of, Ronnie,
you could correct me, like this seems like a holy war,
like these two teams going against each other.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
It was a rivalry game, right, It's.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Kind of volatile, and there was a frenzy going on,
and apparently you got you got maybe a season desist
text saying hey, there's a certain religious group that doesn't
want to elute utilizing this term. I'm just wondering if
there's some ip involved that we're not we're not familiar
with here.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
It must be something, because I mean, as far as
I know, people have enjoyed you know that name.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Fans call it that. That's why you know, it was
a joke made.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
But I was informed of by a higher up to
not refer to that on the broadcast.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Don't say don't utter the word, don't yeah, don't utter
those words. Don't say that.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
And it's just it's interesting, right because I mean, this
is all fun ancer for crying out loud. I mean
I don't want the name to be changed, but if
you had to be and I mean Kyle Whittingham, Oh
you mean the D State game?
Speaker 2 (02:33):
You mean the N State Bold Well, yeah, we haven't
even like what would we change it?
Speaker 4 (02:38):
I was just kind of addressing, I know, and I
just think it's that issue. Like, I don't think there's
an issue. Would call and get the Holy War if
fans want to call it that.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
What if b YU and Utah don't want to call
it that their athletic departments they should.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
Come out with the official statements and say and don't
refer to it as that and then go for from it.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Like again, these are businesses, right.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
If you want something to be the professional way that
you should go out and make a statement. Or if
this is agreed upon ben that they're going to change names,
the athletic departments on both sides should say, hey, this
is being banned or not, you can't do this, and
then put out a statement and then go forward from there.
If you got to take the you know, the correct
and proper channels to do such.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
Let's play the sound bite, and then let's comment on
any of the names that could be potential. I guess
that we would agree upon to change the Holy War
to to one of these projected names. Some of them
are funny that we've come up with. We'll tell you
what they are here coming up. But this is Josh
Peyton Company over there talking changes in rivalry game names.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
And you got folks who have no clue which way
is up when it comes to tradition and pageantry. You
got folks wearing school colors that have no clue what
those colors represent. And I'm telling you, as much as
you made to test some of these people, you do
not detest them enough. Nobody hates college football more than
some of the people that try to run college football.
The types of people we're talking about here are not coaches,
(04:03):
They are not media executives. Even in this case, it's
your good old fashioned campus sweater vest. The kind of
people who you don't see a whole lot. You don't
see them because they wait until mid first quarter to
arrive at the stadium and they leave mid fourth quarter
so they don't have to rub shoulders with you. They
will pose with the concession food, but then they toss
(04:25):
in the trash after you put the phone away because
they're still full from brunch at the country club. Their
job exists because of you, but they can't stand you.
They have nothing in common with you. They could not
care less about you. And they look at a name
like farm Ageddon, and they say it's got farm in it, farming.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
Who farms?
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Farmers? That's who farms. Check your fridge, Check where you
think that came from. They don't know real people, and
they don't want it to be any other way.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
They got nothing in common with.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
You, and it's okay if they exist outside college football.
But every now and then one of these folks weasels
their way into a decision making position in college athletics.
And they look around and they say, oh good, I
can make a lot of money over here, but I
don't like this world. It doesn't look like a world
that I want to have anything to do with it.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
And so what do they do?
Speaker 5 (05:18):
Do They leave?
Speaker 2 (05:19):
No?
Speaker 1 (05:20):
No, Instead, they try and fundamentally change everything about this world.
Things that we would consider great they consider a nuisance.
Rivalry game names being.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
One of those. And I am here to tell.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
You that as Pate State Investigates looked around this issue
earlier today. I uncovered some troubling news. While there may
be nameless, faceless sweater vests at Iowa State and or
Kansas State that would like to do away with the
rivalry game name for Armageddon, that's not the only rivalry
game name that is under threat even in the Big Twelve.
(05:53):
Let them know what college football means when they throw
around those words tradition and pageantry just cause they focus group, well,
let them know they mean more than just the needle
ticked up in their focus group meter. Those aren't just
tested words. Those words mean something to people, culture, ways
of life. That stuff means something to people like us.
(06:16):
And so I would recommend you speak up long and
loud on this sort of thing, or else you may
find yourself on the defensive. Like our fine friends at
Cracker Barrel did okay.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
So great stuff there from pet Investigate. I do think
it's an interesting commentary. There is a silo. There are
silos within every university. There's the academic silo. There is
the research institution silo many times within that academic silo,
and then you have the athletic department silum. And there's
always enmity. There's brotherly enmity there. I mean, the administration
(06:53):
tries to keep everybody happy within the travelistic silo world
that they have to live in.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
But decision makers.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
That Josh Paiter's talking about do reside within these institutions,
and they do not like that. There is worshiping, there
is money, There is a world that exists outside their silo,
and they degrade it, they undermine it. They don't want
(07:25):
anything to do with it. Yeah, they'll pose as he
mentioned with you know, other peop but they don't want
anything to do it. They need at the country club
or whatever. There is a higher key, if you will,
it is after all, these are institutions of higher learning.
That's what it's based off of. And then ancillarily, you
have sport, you have athletics and their quest Remember the
(07:47):
NCAA is this overarching governing body that these institutions give
power to. What are they saying the students athlete, student athlete,
We can't pay these players to represent our school.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
We can't give them more money.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
They're getting an education for long term earning potential. Our
education is the finest in the hemisphere. It's the finest
in the region. That's the mtside about. So as it
relates to the Holy War, this is one of the
things that is up for debate here. I don't think
(08:30):
BYU likes the name, the Moniker, the nickname Holy War.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
There is historical things that they probably want to.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
Avoid, whether it's jihadis or the Crusades or what have you.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
The Holy War.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
That is a term, especially in our modern day anti
imperialism movement philosophy, that we're seeing expanding and that we've
seen expanded in recent history amongst the institution of higher learning.
They they've they don't like it. I think there's an
element there. There's a religious element too, right, there's obviously
(09:10):
a religious element.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
So let's make it light. Let's turn it into levity.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
If we have to move on from the holy word, moniker,
the nickname, where would we go. I've always been open
to church versus state. Oh boy, I'm okay with it.
The Church of Jesus Christ, the Latter day Saints versus
the state University University of Utah.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
Most recently, we had a debate with Kevin Reynolds.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
Kevin Renolds says and he got some quotes from a
CSU Pueblo you know, professor, and some random BYU fan
named rasmisim that says it's the you know, spending money
in athletics is not concruted with the Church of Jesus Christ,
the letter states, and not concrut with the mission of bringing.
Speaker 6 (09:51):
Me on university, by the fact that doesn't come from
either of those places.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
Despite the fact, despite the truth of it all right,
I totally get it. So, you know, it's just interesting
to me that that dilemma of like of you know,
the spiritual nature, and that moral dilemma that people are
seeing from the outside, the haters, the antis. And then
I brought up well, I thought the University of Utah
(10:17):
was an academic institution. Why are you spending Why is
Kyle Whittingham the highest paid employee in the state of
freaking Utah. If you guys are all about truth and
knowledge and science and medicine, and why are you guys
investing all of your money into athletics, all that money
into athletics. It's an issue, So church versus state, there's
(10:37):
enmity there. It's powerful.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
I like it. Ap What do you got for me.
Speaker 6 (10:42):
I've got a few, So I've got four right now,
I'm not sure how great they are, but these are
just I don't know.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
The morality bowl we could throw it's not that great.
Speaker 6 (10:54):
The faith crisis, Okay, it's in there the founder's viewed.
I think both there's out of the founder's view because
both were founded by Brigham Young. I think there's something
there I found when it kind of code versus cure,
you know, and integrating a little bit of the medical
versus the technology or the honor code.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
I don't know, it's not they're not great.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
I think we need to go all in with Kyle
Whittingham's suggestion the in state robbery, the m state, the
instate in state rivalry, that's what we're saying, the in
state rivalry. Thanks Kyle.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
There's the Seer showdown.
Speaker 6 (11:36):
You know, there's an argument between the two schools of
the School of the Prophets, you know, profits coming from.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
The University of Utah. B Yu was like, we're the
school of the problem Brigham Bowl.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
M interesting. Yeah, the desret duel. No one wants the trash,
no offense to whoever made that up.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
That has to be Yeah. I like this rule. This
is the one that I really like.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
Saints versus the sinners that Oh yeah, I give that,
buy into it. It's and Brett Hammer brought this up,
you know it, and it does kind of I think
it leans into a little bit of this what about
the Utah Civil War? We gotta you can't do civil
(12:23):
war once again? Suns Prodigal Sun game, Prodigal Sun Game.
But then I don't know, yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean
I like kind of I I kind of dig the.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
You know, the whole you know, what is it? The
Catholics versus the convicts? Is that what it was? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (12:45):
Saints versus the sinners class, come on, let's gots versus
the sinners Mountain mission. Anyway, Saints versus centers, Church versus state.
What was your favorite at it? The ones that you mentioned,
is there one that none of them were backing off?
Speaker 2 (13:02):
You're backing off?
Speaker 6 (13:04):
This crisis is kind of funny to me see your showdown?
I think is the family feud? No, the house divided,
House divided?
Speaker 2 (13:11):
How's divided? I thought it was funny that house divided?
Speaker 3 (13:15):
Yeah, yeah, anyway, I like that segment. I'm I'm taking
a stand. I am the temple tussle.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
I am taking a stand.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
I will not get rid of the Holy War at
least on my hours until I received that season desist
you know, hey, we're gonna sue you property.
Speaker 4 (13:32):
I'm like, all right, well, actually I have a good time.
What about the Great Soda War Pepsi versus Coke? Like
you know that powerate?
Speaker 6 (13:39):
Mhmm, yeah, I do find it funny though, Pepsi and Coke.
Pepsi is more blue and they sponsor Utah Red Like
where did?
Speaker 4 (13:47):
That's That's what I'm saying, and that's why I think
it's funny. Like the Great Soda War, you know, Twig
versus you know is all that.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
We'll let the We'll let the fans decide on this
one on what their favorites were and why. That's our
segments we're sticking to. It's gonna be brought to you
by Baskin Robbins. Try out all thirty one flavors.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
Guys.
Speaker 3 (14:05):
It's college football season, and we talked a lot.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
Of football on this show.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
After you're talking so much football, what's the best thing
to do, It's go It's it's it's best to go
over to Baskin Robbins and try out one of their
wonderful flavors. I know, it's all about thirty one flavors
in thirty one days here. You can try them all
leading up to kickoff, not too many days away before kickoff.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
Beway your Portland State at home.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
We'll see how it plays out for the Cougs, hopefully
better than you know. You gotta you want to at
least throughout forty two on him, like Tarlington State did.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
That's that's quota. Am I wrong? Now you're wrong? They
gotta they gotta go more.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
I think quotas forty two. Dude, it's Tarlington State. Like,
if the twos and threes aren't putting more, just get
forty two. That's all I need.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
Nah, you gotta get more. Give me forty two.
Speaker 4 (14:47):
I mean, because think about it, if you were to
play Charlton State, what would you need to do?
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Like, I don't know. I think you gotta.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
Brett and I had this conversation, you know, off the
air about Killowney's not gonna go and embarrass him. But
I mean, hey, look, you played the West Virginia game,
in the West of Virginia game years ago, and I
know they put.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
Up forty nine, but you put them sixty six.
Speaker 4 (15:05):
So I don't know Roote sixty six in the first game,
so it that's me being funny.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
But I don't know.
Speaker 4 (15:11):
I think you need to at least score two more
touchdowns than forty two. So that's why I said sixty
you know, go for one hundred. No, OK, not that far.
But I think sixty ben is a purple Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
My thing is, I don't think Colinie's gonna like just
like you know, just pummel them into a pulp. Like
it's you're gonna continue to compete and play and run
the football.
Speaker 4 (15:31):
And if they can't tattoo threes, I know, but if
they're not going to the house, this is like it's like.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
I think the game, I think a shutout and getting
upwards of forty points to me is quota.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
That's fantastic. I don't know.
Speaker 6 (15:44):
Portland State is so bad that even if you send
in the backups, I think you're gonna That's what I mean.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
And that's what mean. It's like rugby. You can't well,
i'ma lay down right here.
Speaker 4 (15:51):
Like if it's six minutes left in the fourth quarter,
you break up the middle, what you're gonna tell them
go slide? Like that's bad football? Like that I would
have to talk Alina again. This is not the comingy one.
I just think I think Portland State is not is
that bad that if Joe Vessa de Mooni breaks up
the middle, you're not gonna tell him slide at.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
The one yard line of likely, No, he's gonna score.
Speaker 4 (16:12):
So I just think with how bad they are, it
might be ugly and there's no reflection of killane.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
They're just not equipped.
Speaker 6 (16:19):
Here's one of my expectations between Stanford and Portland State.
I think one touchdown and one field goal. That's how
bad both those teams are to me.
Speaker 3 (16:30):
Well, see how it plays out. What's quota in your mind?
Cougarnation will maybe save that for another segment. Don't go Anywhere, guys,
head on over to Baskin Robbins after our show though
for thirty one flavors that are delicious and delectable. Check
it out Baskin Robbins try out all their flavors today.

All right, Jay Hill, Jay, you played at Portland State
when you were at Weaver State. Could you tell us
what you've seen from them on film?
Speaker 2 (18:17):
Jay?
Speaker 7 (18:18):
Yeah, I have a ton of respect for coach Barnum.
I think he does a great job with his program.
They're always tough, they always have good players, So I'm
excited to see coach Barnum again. But they have all
of our respect and focus right now, all the respective focus.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
Do they have good players? Who's their best player? Portland
State Football's best player? Typically you're going to look over
on the offensive side of the ball, right I've scoured
the roster. I've looked at returning productivity. I've tried to
watch some tape on Portland State from this last game.
(18:56):
I feel like the best player offense Lee very Well
could be number two. Brandon Alvarez wide receiver. He's a
transfer I believe from San Jose State. If I'm not mistaken.
Brandon Alvarez gonna be the guy. He's got some shift
to him. Five to eleven, one eighty. He's a senior
(19:17):
play that Centennial High School, originally from Norrico, California. He's
produced been a good football player, decent, maybe their best player.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (19:27):
Versus Tarlington State, he had sisterception seventy two yards, not
too shabby, No tuddies, they did not score. H He
did have a long reception of twenty one. Last year
he played in ten games, thirty six reception four and
eighty yards and five touchdowns. Not too bad. Thirteen point
three yards per reception. That's a young man you need
to keep an eye on. He's a good enough player
(19:48):
to maybe make someone look silly on occasion.
Speaker 2 (19:51):
He plays slot receiver.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
So who's ever in that Sam linebacker spot or the
Nickels spot. You gonna have a tough time maybe with Brandon.
But this team is not good. Don't get it twisted.
But Jay's given some love to the head coach. Now, Jay,
you obviously want to treat this like a regular game
with it being an FCS opponent. When are you expecting
to play the second and third string players?
Speaker 7 (20:15):
Well, We're going in this game to win, and our
starters is going to be in there as long as
they need to be to be able to do what
we need to do to play well. Ideally, in all
of our games we get backups in there to get
valuable reps and we get guys in there that because
you got to have your depth and so they need
reps to be able to continue to progress.
Speaker 5 (20:34):
And so yes, I would expect to see the twos.
Speaker 7 (20:36):
In there this game and early in the game, because
that's how we handle every game.
Speaker 2 (20:40):
Let me do a little commentary here.
Speaker 3 (20:42):
Look I think Jay, I mean you go to it
through the linebacker room, the defensive line.
Speaker 2 (20:48):
Defensive line more than anything.
Speaker 3 (20:49):
You typically are always going into the two deep immediately
right like two drives in the second stringers one drive in.
I mean they could be inserted, the second ringers could
be inserted in the middle of the first defensive drives
that you're getting into seven eight, nine plays period. You
see second level defenders also and even third level defenders
(21:12):
that are swapped out in the middle of drives, but
more often than not is defensive line. So your second
stringers are going to see significant playing time even in
the early periods of the early minutes of this bau
Portland State game. I will say this much, and during
the Elisa Tuyaki ed lamb defensive defensive era time and
(21:39):
time again, I as a player, and even I think
fans also joined in on it. Media members, everybody joined
in on it. I think we all hated the fact
that there was always these like hockey substitutions. Do you
guys remember this. I don't know if you guys monitored it.
I mean, goodness, crazy, yeah, but even it was just
it was just crazy, right, It's just and and also
(22:01):
like not only were their hockey gat substitution, but there
was also just this element of like why are we
pulling our best players out of the game, Like we
need to have them in the game, like they need
to be in, especially in the goal line situations, and
we pull them out and I'm like, what are we doing?
Speaker 2 (22:17):
And it's to keep them fresh and to give people opportunity.
Speaker 3 (22:20):
I'll be honest, I thought we were gonna go away
with that when Jay Hill came in. But Jay Hill
has also been pretty adamant about rotating players. We saw
like five safeties four safeties last year, so there is.
Speaker 2 (22:33):
A correlation five safeties.
Speaker 4 (22:34):
Different the talent that Jay has compared to like Elijah Tuyaki,
Like these players are way more athletic and have an opportunity.
Speaker 2 (22:42):
I feel like.
Speaker 3 (22:43):
Keenan, Peelee Peyton, will Gar and Max Tully, Ben Biber
that's a perfect example of like you did have great
players at the linebacker room and like they split reps
and they those linebackers hated it.
Speaker 2 (22:56):
They did. They hated it. They hated it.
Speaker 3 (22:59):
Keenan hated it, hated it, Ben Boywater, Max, whw they
a all hat it. We're gonna maybe catch up with
Ben Bider like, hey, what how was that? He's gonna
beig need to give you that look.
Speaker 4 (23:08):
Well, I think that was Elijah Tulyaki's Elia Elijah, excuse me,
that was his foundation. Jay is like if a guy's
earned it and they're good, then he wants to put
them on the field. I mean, look at Tommy Prassa
being moved to Nickel in the package. Those guys in
the safe room, all of them can start. And I
think that's different compared to back then, Like, honestly, if
you look at it, Keenan shouldn't got the reps. Ben
(23:29):
should have got some here, then Ben should have been
a designated guy. And when j Hill came in, you
saw some of that when before being went out with
the injury. And that's that's my point of I think
it was different mindset of different head coaches. Like we're
gonna get to the sound clip here, but I asked
him a question and the sound bite about, hey, why
is a certain linebacker rotating with another?
Speaker 2 (23:47):
Well, when you earn it, you earn it. I think
I'm not.
Speaker 4 (23:50):
I don't want to say, you know, Elijah didn't do
it like that, but I think some guys might not
have earned it. And he was being nice and Jay
Hill is like, no, if that guy's made plays like
you mentioned, I gotta put him on the field.
Speaker 3 (24:00):
Jonathan CABEYA, he's out of this game, not on the
depth chart. Could you tell us about the cornerbacks the
depth chart for this game at that CB room.
Speaker 7 (24:09):
Well, I like Jayden Dunlap's done some really good things.
Marcus McKenzie's done some good things. Coach Gilford's done a
good job of getting that room ready. We know obviously
Evan and Moury and Trey Alexander.
Speaker 5 (24:20):
Those guys. I love the way they've played.
Speaker 7 (24:24):
Tommy process is kind of going back and forth right now,
And yeah, I mean I think Taveon has done some
really good things.
Speaker 5 (24:32):
So bottom line, that corner group will be ready. Coach
Gilford does a great job.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
With those guys.
Speaker 3 (24:37):
How we feel about the cornerback room right now? Guys
film confident, film swag. You got Evan Johnson, Morty Bomb
Betray as your level one guys, after that Jayden Dunlap
and then Marcus McKenzie as your four and five spot.
Speaker 6 (24:51):
I'm gonna be honest, if there's a weakness on the defense,
I think it's probably the corner room. And simply because
of this, it just feels like that room is a
little bit injury prone. Like Maury has he ever been
able to stay healthy? Like to me, it feels like
he's always had something, and there's a.
Speaker 2 (25:10):
Marcus maybe a little bit being done.
Speaker 6 (25:12):
There's just a few guys in that room that just
every time have just been injured a lot, and you're
already hearing some of them are injured in fall camp,
and that to me just doesn't bode well. Like the
safety room not worried at all. Linebackers not worried at all.
A little bit worried on the defensive line, but to me,
the corners just it just feels like they're very injury prone.
Speaker 3 (25:34):
Yeah, you wonder if Kabaya had stayed healthy with Tommy Prassis.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
Had been moved to cornerback to Nickel maybe at some
point during the season.
Speaker 4 (25:42):
But now right now, it didn't happen in spring. No,
it probably wouldn't if we're gonna be honest.
Speaker 2 (25:47):
So this was a fall camp adjustment.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
Now that could very well mean that Tommy really improved
his man technique.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
We had Rob Daner on the show.
Speaker 3 (25:54):
Did Rob was very effusive in his praise, and you said,
he he's got bend, he's got some swagger to him,
he's got some mobility to him.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
So Tommy's been going back and forth with his safety
and it be true. I think, man, I think so,
I think Tommy improved.
Speaker 4 (26:09):
And that because let's go like this, why did they
bring in Tavon Beasley depth, right, why did you bring it?
Speaker 2 (26:15):
Because of what competently happening?
Speaker 4 (26:17):
And look, it happened so that you always mentioned when
you go on the portal, it's a knee position, and
then when they got a need there and now Tommy's
been moved, which lets us know is confirming what we're
believing to be true about.
Speaker 3 (26:27):
That Tommy's legit. I think he's gonna have you know,
it's gonna be a learning cover that. That is not
an easy position to play by any means. It is
very difficult, but I think he's built for it. We'll
see how it plays out. Uh Jay, next sound bite.
What do you like about Tommy that makes him a
good fit for the position at Nickel?
Speaker 5 (26:48):
Well, he's fast.
Speaker 7 (26:50):
He did that a lot in high school, where you know,
he's covered a lot. I like his instincts, and I
like his toughness, so and his preparation. He does a
good job watching film and trying to understand what I
want him to do and doing it that way. He's
been in the safety room for a long time, so
those guys hear all the adjustments that we do in
(27:12):
all the positions, so he'll be ready.
Speaker 3 (27:14):
Yeah, tell me he's a well rounded football player. I
think he can do it all for you. I think
you know, when I engage with fans that have, you know,
their opinions.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
They're like, well, Tom's just not big enough. He wasn't
big enough. Lash I stopped that.
Speaker 4 (27:27):
You said the same thing about Jay rob He said,
like Jay Robb was like one.
Speaker 3 (27:30):
Hundred and sixty five pounds, soaking wet, and he was
a baller.
Speaker 2 (27:33):
By the way, I think, oh Bro just made the
roster too. But anyway, that's a.
Speaker 3 (27:37):
We tend to like, we tend to heap maybe too much. Uh,
you know, I don't know how I say we We
think football players should look a certain way and traditionally,
like your linebackers, a defensive linemen are bigger, you know,
Cornerbacks and safeties can be big, they can be buff,
they can't, but they can also be like long, lean
(27:59):
and skin like and just explosive and can be rangy
and still four sequels, mass times acceleration, wide receivers and
corners and dbs like they can get away with.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
Not being like massive like that.
Speaker 3 (28:13):
You you would expect uh to see a traditional football
player beat.
Speaker 4 (28:18):
Can I be honest with you, Like you look at
how and I know I'm going NFL, But how Jayleen
hurts is I don't want my quarterback looking like that.
I don't look like Tom Brady Patrick Mahomes Dad. I'm
sitting how many Super Bowls like I'm just keeping it
a buck like they don't. We just to your point
of we expecting to be like Miles Garrett, Michael Parsons,
you know, Aaron Donald Chisel.
Speaker 2 (28:36):
They don't need to be that well.
Speaker 6 (28:38):
And also freshmen usually aren't coming in out of high
school and like tip top college athletes.
Speaker 2 (28:46):
They're eighteen years old. They're an age old. Like give
them a year or two to grow into their frame,
you know.
Speaker 3 (28:51):
And he likes his physicality, he said, Uh, Tomas got
good physical good physicality, great prep. He's got great man coverage.
So we'll see how plays out for him. Now, moving on,
let's talk linebackers here with Jay Hill. What do you
like about Shae Brian Strather he'll be rotating with or
Sarah at the mac linebacker position.
Speaker 5 (29:10):
Yeah, Chay's done a great job.
Speaker 7 (29:12):
We have five or six linebackers that I think are
playing very well right now. Chain are in a battle
right now for the mac spot. Both of them are
going to play a lot. I trust both of them wholeheartedly,
and I think they both add a little different dynamic
to what we're doing.
Speaker 5 (29:29):
And I can't wait to watch them both play.
Speaker 2 (29:32):
So then I have a comment. Let's go.
Speaker 4 (29:35):
Could it be possible that her we maybe saw something
else than just that was like, oh man, wait a second,
somebody else coming because now I and I'm shocked by
this comment. I asked this question, right, I didn't think
i'd get that response. Like when I saw the depths,
I was like, wait a second, he's gonna rotate.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
I thought, had this lock down?
Speaker 4 (29:57):
Could it be that maybe Okay, I'm compete with cial,
but is there somebody else beyond now this nicking place?
Like you gotta think now if here's a tag with
the state you're talking about Jay Bryan Starr, who's a
good football player by the way, Now he's pushing for
time as well.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
Yeh, Shay's good.
Speaker 3 (30:14):
Shay's experience from I mean he's got great Clay too,
some more experience within the system, more confidence, smart kid,
becoming more physical. I think that was his biggest issue,
Shay's issue, I think coming into b why you was
just is he going to be physical at the point
of attack? Not everybody wants to be violent at the
point of attack. There's a reason why Logan latuis you're
starting a wee and he's a good He's a good
(30:37):
pass rusher, but he will bull Russia and he will
set an edge. He will hat in hands, destroy pulling guards.
Speaker 2 (30:45):
He will lean in with.
Speaker 3 (30:47):
Ferocity, no fear, no fear whatsoever for in contact. Not
everyone's built that way. A lot of people like to
play patty Cake. A lot of people like to you know,
you know, just kind of belly up to you and
you know, not logan, not Logan. There's a number of
guys up here that you know, they you know.
Speaker 2 (31:05):
I think I.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
Caught up with Oriyan Miley Kalfusi and I asked him yesterday.
Speaker 2 (31:12):
We'll get to that sound later on.
Speaker 3 (31:13):
I was like, hey, what what what what have you
done to differential yourself? Differentially yourself to be in the
too deep? And he's like, he said two things, nifty
pass rusher, and he's like, my physicality, he's got you.
Hear me talk about this. He's got a really good base.
He's only two forty five, but most of his weight
is in his dairy are he's in his lower half.
(31:33):
So like when he's setting an edge, he's based, he's grounded.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
He's got a firm foundation.
Speaker 3 (31:40):
He's got the firm foundation. That's what we like to
talk about here on this showy fir amen in Hallelujah.
Let's move on another guy that's been standing out the
linebacker room.
Speaker 2 (31:53):
He got what he did? He say, five or six linebacker.
Speaker 4 (31:55):
Said, he said, there, we got about five guys that
I like, five or six guys.
Speaker 2 (31:59):
Six guys. Yep.
Speaker 3 (32:00):
A scout Fussi has gonna be one of three guys.
A scout Fussi has put in a lot of work
this offseason. What does he need to do to see
the time this season?
Speaker 7 (32:08):
What he's been one of the most improved guys on
our defense. He's played very well this fall camp. He
is going to play a bunch this year. He's a
guy trust right.
Speaker 3 (32:19):
Now, definitely trust He's he's the most improved, one of
the most improved all right.
Speaker 2 (32:24):
Final thing, this is the fear of Brandon C. Gurney.
Brandon Gurney has very few fears. Okay, you know, I.
Speaker 3 (32:33):
Would say one of his fears is that he will
have to listen to John bon Jovi every day for
the rest of his life. He hates John bon Jovi,
never wants to listen to him. Shot through the heart
team man and the other one who is depth at
defensive line.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
He's always scared about.
Speaker 3 (32:48):
Depth along the defensive line, so we asked him this question.
We asked Jay Hill this question, how comfortable are you
with the dept at defensive line after fall camp.
Speaker 7 (32:55):
He's got better, We've seen the emergence of vill Pouha
has played very well.
Speaker 5 (33:00):
Odie Scoon overs played very well.
Speaker 7 (33:02):
They give us some flexibility on whether to play those
guys inside or to play them outside. I like that
dynamic that they give us. The inside guys have played
very good so far through camp, and we're faster and
more dynamic off the edge this year, So I'm excited
to see how it all comes together Saturday.
Speaker 2 (33:22):
You get hear it.
Speaker 3 (33:22):
He wants more, he wants more. We've gotten better, But
what that tells me is is like not completely satisfying.
I want more depth, I want more playmakers. We're more
dynamic off the edge. We have the ability to have
multiple fronts. We can go forty front, we can go
thirty front, we can go overfront, we can go under front.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
We can do a lot of different things. We can
do some fun things up front.
Speaker 3 (33:44):
But the depth and the quality, the quantity is just
not where his quota is what he experienced maybe when
he was even at Utah what he wants coming through
the pipeline. There's a reason why they had to go
out and get an easy person and Kau from Weeper
State and I was Alvin Peafua from Hawaii like you
(34:08):
like those are late editions that don't know the system.
Does that make sense though?
Speaker 2 (34:12):
Like that to me?
Speaker 3 (34:13):
Justin Kirkland was also an addition. We we need Justin
Kirkland back. We need him healthy, strong, nursed and strengthened.
And he's on a depth chart by so it looks
like so it looks like he might be good.
Speaker 2 (34:25):
Go is he gonna go? Yeah? Are we ready? He
didn't even mention Justin though, did he in that? No?
Speaker 4 (34:31):
No, but I think you know a guy like that's
capable of a film. I think it was getting him
and he mentioned this in fall camp for him back
on when will Justin be back? That's the one question
we didn't ask. That's the that's the question will just
to be back? Is what we should have asked, because he's.
Speaker 3 (34:42):
Given me an official date for return, Jay Hill, Justin Kirkland,
when is he back?
Speaker 2 (34:47):
And we'll know?
Speaker 4 (34:48):
Uh? And can I be honest now and remind me
you guys know a little bit better with the new
Big twelve conferencing. I don't know if that's in conference
or every game now. The injury report that's once conference
play starts, okay, so we won't know then yet.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
I was like, if that applies now, been because.
Speaker 6 (35:02):
If it was, they would release it today.
Speaker 8 (35:06):
But the thing that makes me think that he's good
to go is Jonathan Cabaya was left off of here, yeah,
because they were like, hey, we're not going to comment
on injuries, but basically if you don't see them on there,
that means they haven't had a season ending injury, but
they're not good to go yet.
Speaker 2 (35:21):
To me, this almost feels like a.
Speaker 8 (35:22):
Little bit of like a either available or unavailable.
Speaker 2 (35:26):
Like if if Justin Kirkland is.
Speaker 8 (35:27):
On here, why would they tell us back in fall camp, oh, yeah,
he's injury, he's got something to deal with, and then
put him back on here, but then take other guys
off because they were injured. So to me, Justin Kirkland
being on here that may be their way of saying like, look, guys,
he's good to go. We're not going to make a
whole deal about it, but he's good.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (35:45):
It seem like it's been like they said, game time decision.
He could be available. I guess we'll find.
Speaker 8 (35:49):
Out, or maybe just if you don't need him, you're
probably not gonna rush it because my guess is he's
not going to be in desperate need to play versus Portland.
Speaker 6 (35:57):
So yeah, just kind of along those Along those lines,
it tells me a couple of things. Number One, if
it was a big game, he would start. Number Two,
he's probably on a snap count for how much he's
allowed to play. Honestly, I mean I have a story
about depth charts and how the way you put out
their depth chart.
Speaker 2 (36:16):
I don't know if you guys want me to share
it now or later. Feel free.
Speaker 6 (36:19):
Well, I know who fills out the depth chart on
one side one time last year. Remember last year when
there was about a billion ores on that first depth
chart I heard. The story is that he filled it out.
It's not a coach. He filled it out and just
put a bunch of ords because he didn't know. And
(36:40):
he goes to the coaches and says, hey, this is
what I got. Where should I take the oars out?
And they looked at it and went, no, that's good.
Sure go with that, and they were like, we kind
of like the confusion and they just sent it out.
And so Kirkland being on the depth chart, to me,
it says he could actually just start and the same
(37:02):
guy filled out the depth chart and it's not the coaches,
and he just put him in there. I don't want
to burst any bubbles with depth charts. They're not always accurate.
Going into very true, very true true.
Speaker 3 (37:13):
It's kind of like if you go back to what
are the Kilani sound bites from last week, he was
asked a question about.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
The injury reports and he's like the depth charts.
Speaker 4 (37:24):
And he's like, hey, Kennedy, can you.
Speaker 2 (37:27):
Yeah, we're doing depth charts. K Hey, we doing depth charts.
Speaker 6 (37:32):
We're gonna doesn't even know that what depart.
Speaker 4 (37:35):
So it might be maybe that's the person put out
the depth charts, because if you're asking about hey.
Speaker 2 (37:39):
We do yo, hey you go right, just expose it
that way to go. We don't know, we don't know,
we don't know who's put him out.
Speaker 4 (37:46):
But I mean, if Kilanie's asking the guy, look, there.
Speaker 3 (37:48):
Is a council, Like in all things in the Hunters,
there's a council always, and there's a hierarchy, and you know,
no one man can make a decision, but there's got
to be checks and balances within the faith.
Speaker 8 (38:00):
I don't think they care about that. To your story,
to your point to.
Speaker 9 (38:10):
The problem, the illusion is everyone who's looking at this
list that has been put out on Twitter and all
those places, everyone thinks that this is the list that
Kilanie and Jay Hill and all those guys are working out.
Hate to spoil everyone Wednesday wrong. You're not looking at
the same documents document that has so it's unfortunately, it's
(38:34):
literally b YU knows they need to put something out
for the media to talk about. They check something off,
they check off the list and go they do this.
Speaker 2 (38:43):
All connect it to the church, right, And I'm talking
about multiple time. I am curious.
Speaker 4 (38:47):
I've been the executive secretary for the bishop. The bishop
don't make all decisions, okay sometime sometimes.
Speaker 2 (38:54):
Sometimes I don't know if I'm going back on Sunday.
Speaker 4 (38:57):
Sometimes you know, you're you're the one just throwing to think, hey,
just do this, Okay.
Speaker 2 (39:02):
He doesn't decide when the Pinewood Derby is are you wait? Okay?
Hold on?
Speaker 4 (39:07):
The church is still secretary stary. Sometimes your secretary gives
you a little bit of information. He's like, yeah, that
sounds good.
Speaker 3 (39:14):
Let's go with that point being the thesis of this
post SoundBite commentary is that j Hill thinks it's good
the depth, but he's not all in on that.
Speaker 2 (39:26):
It's good but doesn't think it's great. It's not great. Better,
but it's not the best. It's not great. So that's
where he's at. He's a little lukewarm with that. You
can tell yeah, souse Jay tells you how he feels.
Speaker 3 (39:38):
He's like, eh, eh, you could feel it. You can
feel it in your loins. Let's go to break. Don't
