We got Hank Pocmera on the line. Hank, how are you.
Speaker 5 (01:56):
I'm doing great? Thank you for having me on.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
Hey.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Always a pleasure talking all with you. Uh and uh,
you know, getting to know you Hank.
Speaker 6 (02:03):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
Number one.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
I just want to say a big fan of yours
highly productive college football player, and uh, you got to
watch you cover.
Speaker 4 (02:12):
You when you were at Boise State.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
I've always felt that, like the BYU in the in
the late seventies, eighties into the nineties, you know, it
was a quarterback factory, and even into the early two thousands,
and then Boise State became kind of this quarterback factory
media darling that that BYU was in the seventies, eighties
and nineties and early two thousands and and since then
(02:35):
there's I think there's a mirror image to a degree
from those two eras. And so when you were getting
recruited by Boise State, why did you choose Boise State
out of high school?
Speaker 6 (02:48):
Yeah, you know, I think just a lot of the
values and principles that uh, for example, that that b
YU has that my brothers chose I felt were very
similar to Boise And it's a great university.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
I had a.
Speaker 6 (03:03):
Wonderful time there and just a great adventure there.
Speaker 5 (03:07):
You know. My son's name is Bronco. I'm seven months old.
Speaker 6 (03:11):
Yeah, And just I think a lot of like what
you just said, watching Kellen growing up and and and
Brett Rippin and these guys that were so great really
really inspired me to kind of take a different path
over some of my other opportunities. And just the system,
the pro style system that they had run what I
just thought really really fit my style of play, and
(03:34):
and I just loved the the creativity and the trick plays,
and you know, I kind of was just enamored and
all that stuff growing up and being a football fan,
and I just kind of it was really fortunate that
it worked out to be able to play there, and
and it you know, it was kind of a childhood dream.
Speaker 5 (03:50):
So it was it was a great experience.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
You got to play b y U a few times,
didn't you while you were at Boise State.
Speaker 6 (03:57):
I technically only really played them once. And so it's
funny because in nineteen I was hurt and we were
undefeated at the time. I think we were like number
twelve in the country. I think Zach was here too,
And that was a heartbreaker. That one was a tough one.
I missed that game, and uh, you know, I think
we might have been able to make the playoff potentially
(04:19):
that year. Uh that was our one one loss. That
was a great team, a lot of great players on
that team, and went out to.
Speaker 5 (04:28):
BYU and it was a cold, rainy, snowy night, and
oh it was.
Speaker 6 (04:33):
It was a miserable cold night out there, and they
got us.
Speaker 5 (04:36):
I think we missed a field goal at.
Speaker 6 (04:37):
The end there to tie it up or something like that.
And yeah, it was a bummer because I was hurt
that game. But that was my first experience, and then
I had COVID in twenty twenty. Obviously, you guys had
a great twenty twenty team there with with Zach Wilson
and all the studs that they had, and so I
had COVID that game, and then twenty twenty one was
(04:59):
my only I'm playing them, and that one worked out
a little bit better. You guys were very good football team, undefeated,
and it was a great experience, great memory for myself,
maybe not for BYU fans.
Speaker 5 (05:14):
Yeah, so it'll feel good. I'm going to go to the.
Speaker 6 (05:15):
Game this weekend, so you know, it'll feel good walking
in there again, you know, knowing that outcome. But yeah,
great program. Plane does a great job. And obviously I'm
a fan now.
Speaker 5 (05:27):
Of BYU and rooting my brothers and the whole team.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
Also, yeah, the little inverse effect, I remember that.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
I remember twenty nineteen B what you knocking you guys
off the pedestal and then in twenty twenty one, you
knocking BYU off the pedestal for like a magical season
in the making.
Speaker 6 (05:45):
Yeah, it was funny because I think BYU had kind
of struggled in nineteen, but their wins were, like I
want to say, it was like Tennessee.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
Yeah, that had some good marquee wins.
Speaker 5 (05:57):
Yeah, they didn't.
Speaker 6 (05:58):
I don't know how many total wins they had, a
lot of their wins were some big time wins from
what I remember. Yeah, obviously, like I said, just a
lot of respect towards them, towards B y U, and
and it's been awesome just getting to know them when
I was playing, and then even.
Speaker 5 (06:14):
Just just now. I mean, you guys do a great
job just from what I've.
Speaker 6 (06:18):
Seen being a being a fan now, you know, on
social media and and.
Speaker 5 (06:22):
You guys media team and everything like that. It's been
it's been really fun. Passionate fan base.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
So why why didn't b why you recruit you out
of high school? Did you ever get any b YU
coaches knocking on your door?
Speaker 5 (06:35):
I never did, No, I never did. Uh, you know,
I kind of know a Rod a little bit.
Speaker 6 (06:41):
Talk to them briefly, like very briefly out of the
portal one time, and and uh, just you know, it's
it didn't happen, but you know there's a Bachmeyer there now,
so uh but multiple bach Meyers are now.
Speaker 5 (06:53):
So it's it's it's it all worked out.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
I understand that. Uh, you did some pro day training
with John Beck too. What other connections do you have
with b YU that you could share with us, including
the John Beck connection.
Speaker 6 (07:07):
Yeah, so shoot, John, I mean I've been training out
there obviously. It's kind of in our backyard since I
was maybe a freshman or sophomore in high school. And
you know, John's always just been nomal to myself and
my family and and yeah, they did my my pro
(07:28):
day stuff and then just just playing them. Really, I'm
trying to think it's been it's been pretty cool just
reaching out. Obviously, the LDS Faith has such a global
network and so just people that I know and being
out and reted to Mecula. I feel like it's a
pretty pretty LDS region. So it's been it's been a great, uh,
(07:51):
just just getting to know a lot of different unique
people from from from d YU and and the connection
there and just in my own area, my own hometown.
So it's been it's been really fun just to just
to get to know more and excited to continue to
you know, want to fly out here and meet more
people and and just uh it's it's an awesome brand
you guys have.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
So we got hanging Bachmeyer on the line, Cougar Sports,
one of three, nine ninety eight point three years being
the fan talking some college football. Let's transition over to Bear.
Who is Bear Bachmeyer your little brother? You know what
stands out to you about her? How do you how
do you describe him as a as a person and
as a player.
Speaker 6 (08:29):
Yeah, Bear is you know, he's somebody I used to
beat up on a lot when I was younger. It's
kind of you talk about the inverse effects. Uh you know,
if we get I try not to get in too
many scuffles with him anymore, just because he he's a
big guy now, so I tried to We were big
w W family when we're growing up. So he used
(08:50):
to tombstone him and and uh, you know, triple H pedigree.
Speaker 5 (08:54):
And and I can't do that anymore. But uh, yeah,
he's he's a great, just person. Great human being.
Speaker 6 (09:01):
I credit my my parents just for everything that they
did for us, and and they're very you know, Tiger
as well, and just all my siblings.
Speaker 5 (09:11):
They're just very well rounded individuals.
Speaker 6 (09:12):
And and I credit that, like I said, too, to
my family and then just I mean, it's it's been
pretty remarkable to see just their journeys. And for example, Bear, like, yeah,
I think there's probably some stories out there coming out,
but just you know, since he was little, he could literally,
(09:33):
you know, he could dribble between his legs, and he'd
always have the whiffleball bat with the mental whiffle ball
and wouldn't you know, just go up to rams strangers
and you know, throw me the ball and hit it.
When he's you know, three years old and always could
throw and it was just always really coordinating, just always
tag along.
Speaker 5 (09:49):
You know, my dad coached myself and coached coach.
Speaker 6 (09:52):
My brothers, and and it's just a they have a
really unique upbringing. And like I said, just credit my
parents for everything that they did for us. And they
did a lot of traveling everywhere, and you know, it's
it's been awesome to see their journey and his is
just starting out.
Speaker 5 (10:11):
But I'm really excited for him.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
So, like, how would you describe the culture in the
Bachmeyer home?
Speaker 3 (10:16):
Because I find that each and every one of you
guys are are are There's definitely some similarities in the
way that you guys engage, you guys discuss. You guys
common articulate, smart guys, ceverbrawl, obviously great athletes, but you
guys come from a very grounded, religious, disciplined home. Like
(10:36):
what is the culture like growing up in the Bachmeyer family?
Speaker 5 (10:40):
Yeah, you know, I think.
Speaker 6 (10:42):
I think definitely there's all that stuff, but it was chaos.
Speaker 5 (10:46):
It was chaotic every day. You know.
Speaker 6 (10:48):
We have a long hallway in our in our house,
and we would play with the nerf ball, like every
day it would be tiger and bear vers myself and
there's pictures on the side.
Speaker 5 (10:56):
Of it, and there's always.
Speaker 6 (10:59):
A picture as a crack frame or when my mom
always had to replace it and somebody's crying, screaming, laughing.
Speaker 5 (11:05):
It was it was organized chaos, at least in my mind.
Speaker 6 (11:09):
Like, I think it really helped us out, Like at
least it helped me out, like with things that were
I don't want to say to other people, but like
some problems it would just I don't know, it gave
me a calm demeanor and a lot of chaotic things
in my life just to be able to handle. Like
we didn't come from from much, so like just the
way my dad was, you know, uh he would we
(11:32):
were homeschool, right, so like we would literally kind of
have our own curriculum and the guy would just give
us like the Wall Street Journal or just talking about whatever,
and and and sports were obviously pushed. We we did
that as well when we were homeschool, just athletic training
and everything like that. But yeah, it's it's uh, it's
it's really unique. Like I said, I have a seventh
month old, so uh yeah, I'll say it straight up.
Speaker 5 (11:54):
My parents are crazy. They're they're nuts, But uh, I
think you got to be.
Speaker 6 (11:59):
Able to put the boundaries a little bit to to
have you know, like Tiger for example, like I don't
know anybody else that could do that in computer science,
that in his schedule and just everything that he does,
you know, like it's a great honor being his brother.
And and Bear was you know, I I joke around
because he he likes economics, and he was like, man,
(12:20):
I might freaking try to be the president, you know,
at Stanford, and that was kind of a joke, but
I think, you know, he's the type of guy that
could could do it if he really wanted to.
Speaker 5 (12:28):
But yeah, it's just been, uh, it's it's.
Speaker 6 (12:32):
Been really fun to look at it, you know, with
my kid like, okay, this this was nuts or this
was good. But you know, they they had three Division
one athletes and and you know, my sister is getting
her MBA and ran track at a division three and
and so I look at what they did and very
honored to have them be my parents, Very honored to
be the oldest of the five of us. And yeah,
(12:53):
it's been it's been a really fun journey. But it's
it was chaotic and at the same time, though, my
my father was a military guy, and so he always
made sure, you know, he looked them in the eye,
shook their hands, whoever it was, and and you gave
him your time and he called me yes sir.
Speaker 5 (13:08):
And yes ma'am and did all that stuff as well.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
So it's a unique upbringing, I think, and you know,
coming from a home of seven boys and one girl.
The chaos I feel you on that, always something broken,
always playing, you know, I love that description reminded me
of my childhood. So we got Hink Bachmeyer here on
ESPN the Van. Let's talk about Bear's Bears, a quarterback.
(13:33):
What stands out to you about Bear? Highly chouted, highly rated,
maybe the most recruited out of the out of the
Bachmeyer family, right, and he had his option pick of
the litter, if you will, from the scholarships doled out
to him. What what stands out to you about about Bear?
What do you like about his play style?
Speaker 2 (13:52):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (13:53):
So for Bear, you.
Speaker 6 (13:55):
Know, I think obviously he's he's he's doing really well
so far. He hasn't played yet, and I'm sure he's
gonna make some you know, I'm just saying this as
his older brother, like you know, as a fan base. Like,
he's gonna make mistakes and he's gonna have growing pains.
But I think if you guys, you know, just let
him roll and be patient and just you know, the
plan that Coloni and a run a for him. I
(14:17):
think with the schedule too, I think it's really gonna
help him grow.
Speaker 5 (14:22):
But for Bear, he's just he's he's.
Speaker 6 (14:26):
Really like, uh man, I don't even know how to
say this, but he he just can do it all.
Like he he can play from the pocket, He he
can process.
Speaker 5 (14:35):
At a high level.
Speaker 6 (14:36):
He he understands to play within the scheme and uh,
take what they give you, and and and.
Speaker 5 (14:43):
It's a lot of things.
Speaker 6 (14:44):
You know, John Coach, a Rod Matt Mitchell, Coach Coloney
myself just.
Speaker 5 (14:48):
Like Preach because he is a very high IQ guy.
He can operate within.
Speaker 6 (14:53):
The system and at a really high level. And i mean,
I'm curious see how it's gonna go this this weekend.
Speaker 5 (15:01):
He's never played in a college game, and so we'll
see how it goes.
Speaker 6 (15:04):
But he has all of that, and then the added
element is just his mobility. And he played baseball. I
mean he played his junior year. He like led the
league of home runs and all that stuff. And he
he has that ability to play from different slots, and
he's got a really quick release, and he can throw
(15:27):
off platform. He can do all of that stuff at
a really high level. And then he's got a great
build like his bill.
Speaker 7 (15:35):
He's got like a.
Speaker 5 (15:36):
Kind of like a pretty ish kind.
Speaker 6 (15:38):
Of build in my eyes, and with his with his
lower half, and then yeah, he he has the capacity
to be able to run. Really curious to see how
all that pans out at the college level. But he
was able to do that at a high level in
high school, and so uh he he really he really
(15:58):
doesn't have anything yet in my high is that that
he cannot do.
Speaker 5 (16:03):
Uh, it's just gonna be h the ability to get.
Speaker 6 (16:06):
More experience and and and just kind of grow and
and learn from from what he does right and wrong.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
So you've been in those situations before as a young quarterback,
wending your way right, learning through trial and error, et cetera.
Trying to get the game to slow down for you,
watching as much film as possible so you can anticipate,
but the speed of the game, Uh, the familiarity of
the scheme, familiarity, familiarity of personnel, it can all be
(16:34):
a little bit delayed. What advice have you given Bair
through the process in order to try to stay within himself,
stay within the scheme and uh, you know, limit some
of those those uh those bone headed plays, the mistakes
that that every single quarterback engages in as a true freshman,
as a sophomore, even yeah, I mean you.
Speaker 5 (16:53):
Make those I mean I played last year. You making
those mistakes.
Speaker 6 (16:56):
It just happens, you know, nobody's perfect and uh yeah,
nobody's perfect really, So I think for him to be
able to understand that, and I love There was a
recent Jamis clip.
Speaker 5 (17:09):
I love Jamis just kind of his personality.
Speaker 6 (17:11):
He's very authentic, and he talked about how his thought
process and he's not He said something along lines of,
I'm not an outcome based quarterback. You know, I just
look at if my decision was right. And so that's
a big thing that I've been preaching the bare lately
because I just like, I love that personally because it
(17:31):
was like, man, it's detached from the result. And you know,
if you know, there's a famous Bill Walsh books, one
of my favorite books, The score takes care of itself.
And so if you focus on your process and and
and you focus on, okay, what do I need to
do to execute this play? Okay I need to do this,
and you get snapped my footwork, my protection, my progression,
(17:52):
you know, and and make sure that I'm sound in
my pre snap process. But then was my decision right?
You know, because jameson thing he talked about, you know,
did I throw a pick?
Speaker 7 (18:01):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (18:02):
But was my decision right? And whatever, you know, outcomes
you don't control the outcomes. You just control your process
and your decisions.
Speaker 5 (18:08):
And and those.
Speaker 6 (18:09):
Are all things that that I've been trying to preach
the bear and and you know, I think that stuff
really goes a long way and compounds if you really
sound in your process. And and another thing too that
I think is really huge, and uh, my brief brief
experiences with with Kilane and and a Rod is they
(18:29):
really have a support of nature. And so what it
looks like and what it sounds like with with for example,
Jake last year and Zach and some of these guys,
was that they don't and and just speaking as the quarterbacks,
like when you make a mistake, you're not like looking
over your shoulder or you're not getting showed out and
like oh my god, I can't.
Speaker 5 (18:50):
I'm scared to make this throw or I can't make
this mistake. It's not that mentality. It's like let's go
freaking score a touchdown like way to push the boundaries.
Speaker 6 (18:56):
And I really love that from a from a coaching environment,
the guys that are supporting him, it really seems like
that's the environment that he's in right now. So I
think that that all just helps your confidence because I
think confidence is everything, and and you know it's an
ni landscape now, so just I try to just preach him.
Speaker 5 (19:17):
You know, it's you're a professional in all facets in
your life. You represent a whole.
Speaker 6 (19:21):
University, you represent your family, and you know, you just
got to get professional every single day.
Speaker 3 (19:27):
I feel like all of you are stoics in the nature,
pretty even Keel, and I think that boats well in
the quarterback room.
Speaker 4 (19:35):
Obviously, Tiger's a.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
Wide receiver specialist, part tenter kick returner, he can do
a lot of different things.
Speaker 4 (19:42):
But you're pretty even, Keel.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
How was that that personality benefited you at the quarter
at the quarterback position, because I feel Bear reflects that
same type of stoicism.
Speaker 5 (19:54):
Yeah, I think it helps out. You know, Like I said,
I really credit our upbringing.
Speaker 6 (20:00):
Being so chaotic really to be honest, to handle some
of these moments, like it was, just going through going
through different experiences and adversities in our life.
Speaker 5 (20:12):
I think really helps you be in the moment in
the game. And and and I think I think, you know,
I think and a lot of people could probably.
Speaker 6 (20:23):
You know, attest to this, but you know, we're pretty
uh outlier family, were pretty quirky.
Speaker 5 (20:29):
We we do some different things.
Speaker 6 (20:30):
And I think that these guys, like especially my brothers,
they just don't really care, like they.
Speaker 5 (20:39):
They just are very very authentic people and they live
their lives aligned and what they believe in.
Speaker 6 (20:44):
And they're they're not worried about other people's opinions or
anything like that. And so I think, I think a
lot of that stuff really just uh helps you, you know,
be the best athlete you can be if you have
a you know, foundation of a faith and a purpose
and you know what you're you're doing. And I think
that that really helps them. And we like to have
(21:06):
a lot of fun, you know, I think, uh, you know,
we can do interviews here.
Speaker 5 (21:10):
You know, all the time.
Speaker 6 (21:11):
And but at the same time, like we have a
lot of fun. We're goofballs and and uh, it's always
an adventurer. You can ask anybody like I'll just it's
an adventure with us and and I wouldn't change change anything.
Speaker 4 (21:23):
So yeah, sure, you I mean Bear, first day, you
fit right in.
Speaker 3 (21:26):
He was talking about playing Settlers of Catan and ping
pong and chess.
Speaker 4 (21:31):
He told us about I think.
Speaker 3 (21:32):
Tiger and Bear talked about how they love playing chess.
I'm like, man, you guys gonna fit in just right
at b YU. You got some I call it a
jock Nerd hybrid syndrome. Like they they're a combination of both.
And b YU has a lot of those guys down there.
Speaker 6 (21:50):
Yeah, I thought, you know, I thought it'd be a
great experience for them.
Speaker 5 (21:55):
I think it really fits their personality.
Speaker 6 (21:57):
I went on the visit with them, and just like
I said, I have a ton of just mutual respect
from the years that I played against them and prepared
against them, and and I just thought that for them,
it was just a great, great opportunity to to just
come in and be at a place that you're really
aligned with and you know, really quick, I think, I
(22:19):
think Stanford is a just an incredible institution, an incredible university.
And you know, Tiger, he's going to go back and
get his master's in computer.
Speaker 5 (22:26):
Science eventually, and he loves that place.
Speaker 6 (22:29):
And obviously there were some some stuff that kind of
went on there that that led my brothers to buy us.
Speaker 5 (22:36):
So everything happens for a reason.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
Yeah, Troy's firing was not timely, I don't think for
either one of them. And and uh, you know, Obviously
b YU fans are grateful that they got Tiger and Bear,
you know what I mean, Like there's always, uh, there's
always uh, you know, another opportunity that you know, one
one door closes, another door opens, right, and a blessing
comes from that. But you know when when they were
(22:58):
going through that process as what was your advice to
him as they as they decided to enter the portal?
And I think you alluded to some of it, but
what was your advice to him?
Speaker 5 (23:09):
Yeah, you know, I think, well a lot of the
values and stuff that b YU has.
Speaker 6 (23:13):
But yeah, it was tough, you know with even just
coach Reich being there and Andrew and they're they're just tremendous,
first class university and program.
Speaker 5 (23:22):
But you know, even with like coach Reich, he was
only going to be there.
Speaker 6 (23:24):
A year, so it was like, man, there's going to
have an Tiger is gonna have three coaches in a year.
Speaker 5 (23:30):
So so there was just there was just some things that.
Speaker 6 (23:32):
That were going on there that I think BYU With
coach Kline, I don't know what year it is for him,
but he's been there a long time. And and even
at the receiver obviously the quarterback position is.
Speaker 5 (23:45):
Is very well regarded there, but the receiver position is
as well, and so I think for them, they just
wanted to find a lot of the values that.
Speaker 6 (23:57):
My family has, and I think just everything BYU offered
was kind of matched everything that they align with.
Speaker 5 (24:05):
So it just like you said, it ended up just
working out, I think in.
Speaker 6 (24:08):
The best possible way it could have. Obviously, they end
up play and they got to be successful and do
their job. But I just think that the foundation of
the program and the university really aligns with everything that
they are about.
Speaker 3 (24:23):
When in watching Bears film, throwability run ability is obviously
a dual threat kid true freshman quarterback, though, Like, what
should the expectation be for a true freshman quarterback at
a P four institution with the schedule that he's got
before him. Do you think from a fans media standpoint, right,
we need to sometimes you know, I'm a former football
player myself, trying to level it out, right, We're not
(24:43):
talking about you know, just absurd numbers here, but you know,
what type of expectations do you heap on a true freshman?
Speaker 6 (24:52):
Yeah, I as a former college FOOTBA player. Now it's
kind of funny because you don't want to talk about
your glory days where you once so I want to
bring it up. And so I I kind of been
giving him a little smack, like about my first game
and you know, through for over four hundred yards.
Speaker 5 (25:06):
And.
Speaker 6 (25:08):
It's kind of an internal brotherly competition. It's like, all right, man,
you got you gotta beat this, you know. But uh Now,
at the same time, I mean, I made a.
Speaker 5 (25:17):
Lot of mistakes.
Speaker 6 (25:18):
And I'm very grateful for coach Harson and Coach zac
Hill and that whole university and and just I think
that they knew that they were gonna have to roll
with some punches and and I'm really appreciative and grateful
that they gave me that opportunity, and like I said,
gave me that support to be able to go out
there and and just go be free and do your
(25:40):
best and and and understand that there's gonna be some
growing pains.
Speaker 5 (25:45):
But at the same time, like he he.
Speaker 6 (25:47):
Understands and and you know, I don't think that they
would have given him the job if he didn't prepare
like a professional and and he didn't have the talent.
It's not like we're just gonna give it to him
and let him just develop as a freshman. It's in
my eyes, at least when I was going through it.
I can't speak for Bear, I can't speak for the coaches,
but I mean I'm very much prepared, very very hard
(26:11):
for that opportunity, you know, And so I think those
same characteristics, those same attributes, that same preparation and process,
Like Bear has to keep it at a high level,
or else he wouldn't be where he's at. So at
the same time, like he's got to play at a
high level, Like you guys aren't putting a freshman out
(26:32):
there to be a freshman. He's out there to be
a starring quarterback, a BYU with a great tradition that
you guys have. So you know, there's standards of play
at that position, at that position, and he's got to
be able to uphold.
Speaker 5 (26:44):
Them, you know.
Speaker 6 (26:46):
But he's not gonna be perfect at the same time,
So it's it's a it's a fine line, but really
excited for him and just how he's going to handle
this journey.
Speaker 5 (26:55):
Like I am his big brother, but that's that's what
I am. I'm his big brother.
Speaker 6 (26:58):
I can only give him so much to just can
only give him so much, he's got to go out
there and experience it for himself.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
Well, Hank, it's been a pleasure getting to know you

Speaker 3 (30:54):
I know, man, Wednesday, you know, you know, I guess.
Speaker 8 (30:59):
I don't count today for any Saturday. And that's how
I'm going in my mind. Today is already it's already long,
It's almost.
Speaker 4 (31:05):
Here, It's already here.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
Man. I'm excited for you like when you think about
the college football seasons that you were a part of
the preparation, the fall camp, the game week prior to
game one, Like where do you reflect, Like where do
you go back to when I say, hey, game week,
back in your your heyday right before you know game
(31:27):
one of the season.
Speaker 7 (31:29):
Well, game one was awesome.
Speaker 8 (31:31):
I love game one because you had so much It's
like around the middle of the schedule, like game five
and six when trying to keep your nose above water.
And and this is maybe more for a quarterback than others,
but I think anybody who's taking their craft seriously, this
is their experience. Like game one is you feel like
you know that opponent inside and out, Like you feel
so good with your game plan going in because you
(31:54):
even actually maybe get a little bit even more than
a bye week, because the thing about a bye week
is that you had a.
Speaker 7 (31:59):
Game before you're coming into this off fall camp.
Speaker 8 (32:02):
So you've had your you've had almost two full weeks
a game prep, and you're just feeling ready to go.
And we always performed well. You know, Mike Leach came
in my senior year and we put it to Washington State,
and you know, we beat. My first start at BYU
was against Jake Locker and the Washington Huskies, and we
(32:22):
you know, we beat those guys by a couple of touchdowns.
And I always just felt extremely prepared, anxious. And then
not to mention, you just got fresh legs, bro, You
going going to that game feeling just looved up, just
like the joints feel good. There's no muscle sword is,
you don't have any contusions, You're not.
Speaker 7 (32:38):
Dealing with any of that.
Speaker 8 (32:39):
So Week one was, like, I'm not gonna say it
was the high point, because the high point came in
the best competition throughout the season and testing your medal
against the best teams. And that's not always a Week
one opponent, but Week one, like as far as vibes,
was the all time high.
Speaker 3 (32:53):
I love it, man, love the vibe of college football.
The preparation, the sites, the downs, it's all, it's all,
you know, it's you know, people say Christmas is the
most wonderful time of the year. This is the most
wonderful time of the year in my opinion. So I
sent you a reason to be optimistic that Bear Bachmeyer
(33:14):
can be successful this year. I think there's a good
chance a solid chance that he can be successful. And
I delved into a number of things that I would
you know, I would justify as.
Speaker 4 (33:27):
Creating a good chance for him to be successful.
Speaker 3 (33:28):
Obviously, a four star recruit, nationally recognized, Alabama, Georgia, Michigan,
Notre Dame. All these teams recruited him, offered him. He's
a dual threat kid. He's six two two twenty five.
He's a proven passor and runner. Comes from a football family,
high football like you is.
Speaker 7 (33:43):
He's a reclass what's that? All right? That's the in me.
Is either a reclass or he's really old?
Speaker 5 (33:49):
Is it true?
Speaker 7 (33:49):
He's nineteen already.
Speaker 3 (33:51):
He may be a reclass. I don't know how old
he is, but he is very mature.
Speaker 8 (33:55):
Dudes are double reclass in these days.
Speaker 3 (33:57):
But you never know, right, I've seen it. I have
seen that, no doubt about it. Gained early early college experience,
at least at Stanford for a spring before coming over
to BYU. He is familiar that game two with personnel
and based schemes, so you can get a dub there.
He was described as brilliant per Aaron Roderick, and then
his high school coach said he had a photographic memory.
(34:19):
The first six games are winnable BHY. You should be
favored in each. Three of the first six games are
at home. Week three by allows for early adjustment, correction recovery,
avoids immediate matchups against the toughest Big twelve defenses.
Speaker 4 (34:31):
You do have a good supporting cast in LJ.
Speaker 3 (34:32):
Martincionimoa, Chase Roberts, Parker Kingston, Jojo Phillips, Cody Hagen, tight
end Carson Ryan, a ten year at offensive line with
multiple returning starters. You have a projected top twenty five defense,
projected top twenty five special teams unit. You have consistency
of culture with Killane and less volatility within the coaching staff.
You have continuity of scheme with your coordinator too right,
(34:53):
so everybody else's is familiar with the scheme and the
install bear had to get up to date with it.
It is a quarterback friendly system. I've never seen as
many easy throws. Jaren and and Zach were pretty proficient
as young quarterbacks in the red zone, going in play action, rhythm, pros, design, mobility,
and then you got Lavelle Edwards Stadium. Obviously the home
(35:15):
field advantage. You should get to Bowl eligibility. You have
a new strengthen conditioning program that has been able and
capable of keeping this team a little bit healthier, and
you have some veteran leadership in there. And I'd also
add John Beck has trained bear Bachmeyer since he was
in seventh grade.
Speaker 4 (35:28):
That's that's kind to bode Well.
Speaker 8 (35:31):
Yeah, I mean essentially, what the case that you're making
is what I've always said. There there are a few
of the few, and we don't know that this is.
Speaker 7 (35:40):
Bear Bachmeyer, not like we all hope that he is.
Speaker 8 (35:42):
And most of the time, with what I'm about to say,
this doesn't materialize until a guy has been a multi
year starter.
Speaker 7 (35:49):
But there's a few dudes.
Speaker 8 (35:50):
A signal caller that no matter who around them, they're
gonna be able to put their team.
Speaker 7 (35:54):
On the back and like and go do it right.
Speaker 8 (35:58):
But and we see this in the NFL time everybody's
talented in the NFL, everybody's got a rock around. There
are some differentiatings and guy's ability to process and kind
of what happens above the shoulders, But quarterback position, more
than any other, uh more than any other position in sport,
is the product of his environment.
Speaker 7 (36:14):
So essentially everything he's just laid out, is.
Speaker 8 (36:16):
Just saying that the program is in as good as
shape as it has probably ever been. Like the program
top to bottom is as good as so. Like, yeah, whoever,
whether it's a freshman or whether it's whoever it is,
should be able to have every tool available to them
to be successful.
Speaker 7 (36:35):
And as you look at.
Speaker 8 (36:36):
Some of the individual reasons for Bear, like one of
the things I like, if I if I'm not mistaken,
his older brother Hank, started as a freshman at yeah,
at Boise. You know, I just listened to an interview
with ed Orgeron where he's talking about his his In fact,
it became over time his number one recruiting role was
bet on the DNA. Right, So obviously you got you
(36:56):
got Hank, you got Tiger, and now you got you
got Bear. So like that's you're placing a pretty good
bet on the d or that's pretty good DNA to
be placing a bet on And so yeah, I mean
the that's great. I can I can go into the
re I'm right and high with you, man, Like I'm there,
I can go into the reasons why maybe it won't materialize,
(37:17):
But like, what's the fun of doing that? Before we've
even played a game. Let's hold on to this hope
while we've got it.
Speaker 4 (37:22):
Yeah, yeah, now I feel you on that. I feel
you on that.
Speaker 3 (37:25):
Is there anything what's concerning to you this year?
Speaker 4 (37:29):
Like what where?
Speaker 3 (37:30):
Where could the wheels fall off? Do you think from this?
It's not so much concerning.
Speaker 8 (37:37):
It's just because I believe that they've taken a step
forward on defense, and I believe that we got a
very good chance of being neutral slightly improved on offense.
So if that's the case, but here's the difference or
like here's here's my case for non optimism is that
I don't know, like I hate to call it, but
(37:58):
like Utah and Oklahoma States were games that were won
and kind of flukey ways, right, and that that puts
you down to that puts you down nine wins.
Speaker 7 (38:06):
And then.
Speaker 8 (38:09):
My point is like even if they're only slightly better,
if the conference has gotten better and or the ball
doesn't bounce you away, honestly, you know what BYU's like
or what this big ball was like. It's like the NFL,
like so much of the NF. You remember two years
ago when the Vikings were the number one seed in
the NFC, but they were they had they were like
seven and one in one score games, and then they
got into the playoffs and they kind of got exposed
(38:31):
a little bit, and the reality was they had just
kind of gotten a lot of in game luck or
like the ball had bounced their way a lot. Like
my reservation comes from the fact that if we're just
being purely objective, last year, I think, like, to me,
Oklahoma State lost that game. We didn't win that game,
and and like Utah gave that game away more than
(38:51):
more than we took it over and we won it.
And maybe that doesn't happen that year, And if that
doesn't happen that year, that then we're down somewhere around
eighty or nine.
Speaker 7 (39:00):
And I think most people would take that. I would
hope most people would take that. But I don't have concern.
Speaker 8 (39:05):
But that's the thing I'm also I'm also on board
for like running it back at eleven and two and
being you know, and and where we fell short last
year with that Kansas game and missing our opportunity to
get in the conference championship. I can see us learning
from that and taking the step forward and getting in
the conference championship game and playing our way into the playoff.
I can just as easily see that because I think
(39:27):
we made some great moves in the portal. I think
the continuities in the staff of you already alluded to,
but also with your main producers. I know that forty
percent of the starters aren't coming back, but I think
we replaced him with starters from other universities. And I
think the like, just the names we got coming back
is pretty you know, they're they're like like you got
(39:50):
Glasger and Kelly coming back, you had tanu Vas, and
then on the offensive side you got you got Roberts
and Martin, who everybody feels comfort and then you.
Speaker 7 (40:00):
Add Ryan who is a very familiar name. Carson is
like very familiar.
Speaker 8 (40:03):
In going all the way back to how hard BYU
recruited him initially out of high school. Now they finally
got this guy, Like, there's no way that he's not
like an unknown commodity or a guy that's gonna drop off.
So like, I have some reason for caution, but I
could just as easily make the argument for BYU to
take that step forward. So this question, the original question
was like what are your reservations or what gives me pause.
(40:25):
What are my concerns for this bou football team.
Speaker 7 (40:28):
I don't really have any other.
Speaker 8 (40:30):
Than and honestly, I don't even think it's worth mentioning
injury because any injury is an existential threat.
Speaker 7 (40:36):
For any college football team.
Speaker 8 (40:38):
Right, And so I mean this guy, this guy's looking
pretty Cougar blue.
Speaker 4 (40:44):
Bro love that breakdown.
Speaker 3 (40:46):
Riley Nelson here on the uspn the fan talking some
Cougar football. What does it take to have a thousand
yard rusher on a team and a thousand yard receiver?
Aaron Roderick mentioned in his Coordinator's Corner that LJ. Martin
was the MVP of the Bauo offense, as as was
Chase Roberts. That they've taken their their their playmaking ability
(41:10):
to the next level. It hasn't happened all that often.
I think you may have experienced.
Speaker 8 (41:16):
The last Austin and Harvey Man.
Speaker 3 (41:19):
Well, I think Jamal and Cody was Jamal was Cody
in twenty twelve too?
Speaker 4 (41:24):
Or No? Was that not?
Speaker 5 (41:25):
No?
Speaker 8 (41:26):
I don't think Cody had Cody battles some injuries in thirteen. No,
Jamal didn't get because he was a true freshman. Jamal
didn't get to Ony and twelve, okay, and then Cody
battled injuries. Cody missed a couple of games in twenty thirteen,
and I don't think got to one thousand and thirteen.
So the other one might be Jamal and Mitch maybe
in thee some years, but it might go all it
(41:46):
might go all the way back to like Harvin Dennis
or Harvan Austin.
Speaker 3 (41:50):
That's a good fact check thing that I think internally
we're going to look at because I think the hype
surrounding lj And and Chase are so want a kin
to those, you know, those those certain seasons. I think
Tyler Aw's year, Dax Milne, I want to say two thousand,
was it twenty and twenty twenty twenty one. I need
(42:13):
to look at that because these this this two man
you know, wrecking crew of running back and wide receiver.
It's special. The question is, you know, what role does
the quarterback playing all that in your opinion, to get
that to meet that threshold, those thresholds, and I'm not
saying that is the goal, but I mean there's hype
surrounding these two guys and so much that you kind
of feel like they're on the precipiece of accomplishing that.
Speaker 7 (42:36):
Feed Well, I'll tell you the first thing.
Speaker 8 (42:40):
If we're laying the foundation for the possibility of this happening,
the first thing that these happens is you need a
defense that is going to be consistent game in, game out,
and not force you into positions. You know, maybe they
don't show up that day and now it's now you're
throwing the ball sixty times and you don't get the
luxury because you're constantly playing catch.
Speaker 7 (42:57):
Up on the other side of the ball.
Speaker 8 (43:01):
If the defense shows up and just consist I'm not
saying they're like lights out, but if the defense shows
up and is consistent, and that allows you as an
offense to be able to architect your game plan and
call your games from a very balanced perspective. And as
we've known with Roderick and as everybody's trying to i mean,
just basic football the last seventy years, is you want
(43:23):
to be able to establish the run, which establishes a
physical presence, allow you to control the game the momentum
of the clock, and then off that you want to
be able to really hurt the defense, damage the defense
by playing off of that run game via play action
and take shots to guys downfield. The other thing that
you want to be able to do is.
Speaker 7 (43:41):
Convert third down.
Speaker 8 (43:43):
Third downs are going to be so where the majority
of your thousand yard rusher is going to be made
on first and second downs.
Speaker 7 (43:49):
The majority of your thousand yard receiver.
Speaker 8 (43:51):
Is going to happen on play action and open downs,
but mostly on third downs.
Speaker 7 (43:55):
Like that's where those dudes need to show up.
Speaker 8 (43:57):
Your running back showing up on first and second, wide
receiver showing up on third. And so that's kind of
the recipe. There is just game management. But as funny
as it is, you know, you asked me, what, what's
a quarterback's role? What's an offense?
Speaker 7 (44:10):
What's an offenses role?
Speaker 8 (44:11):
But that even that quarterback, that offense is extremely dependent
upon the performance of its defense. Because if the defense
can't consistently show up and help you maintain control of
that game, then you can get significantly balanced one way
or the other, and that can make it hard. You know,
to give a guy enough at bats to generate the
production of one thousand yards.
Speaker 3 (44:32):
How often are you going to run this six to
two and twenty five pounds dual threat quarterback? Do you
think how many toats do you think he's getting a game?
You know, QB designed run and then you know freelancing
and scrambling and then taking off to you know, pass
the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 8 (44:50):
I like fourteen to sixteen, but that you know, But
it's different because Roderick my coach, was coach Doman and
that's I lined with him a lot.
Speaker 7 (45:01):
And I kind of like the fact that he always
would let me use my legs to get out.
Speaker 8 (45:05):
But like I've I've heard Roderick coach up the dudes
Beckloin's doing the radio and all that stuff, Like I
would hurt him say, like, hey, he's taking a sack
at the worst thing, like taking us. First of all,
it wasn't in my DNA for the first thing, and
second of all, it wasn't really one of our emphasis
of coaching. So I say it for like, fourteen feels
(45:25):
like the right number to me, and that like you're
maybe six to eight designed, and then as he's out
there extending plays on open downs or trying to convert
third downs, you're gonna get another six to eight attempts there.
I think that's how it happens. I think I would
hope that they go lean a little bit heavier like
to that fourteen fifteen. But you watch him and if
(45:46):
he's proven that he can't that he hasn't because I mean,
we've all seen the clip.
Speaker 7 (45:50):
Right, it's made its way viral. I'm sure it's got tens.
Speaker 8 (45:53):
Of millions, if not hundreds of millions of him trucking
that dude at the and I know he's I know
he's built like a brick house and all that stuff,
but there's big dudes on the other side of the
football too, and I guess sorry. My whole point to
this is if you can get a feel that he's
athletic enough to be able to get out, run and
protect himself. But if he goes out and he's trying
(46:15):
to just retread his high school playbook of using his
body of physicality, you can't do that because it just
shortens his lifespan. Right, Not a guarantee that he will
get hurt, but it just significantly increases the probability. And
if we're all as high on him, or if the
coaching staff is as high on him as they say,
they're gonna want to protect him and keep it in
there for the entirety of this season, and in which
(46:36):
case I expect that Carrie's number to come down more
to like five to seven rather than fourteen to fifteen.
Speaker 3 (46:44):
Love that Riley Nelson, ladies and gentlemen talks of BYU football.
Is there a player or players that you feel like
are a little bit underrated right now on the roster
offense or defense that are gonna break out? We always
have those breakout players, right I don't know if there's
a player that you thought on your squads was a
bit underrated and ended up breaking out. Not many people
(47:06):
knew about in the media, the fans, et cetera. But
the team maybe internally new or maybe you knew that
they would be special. So talk about it, reflect on
the past, and then is there anybody on the roster
this year that you're intrigued by?
Speaker 7 (47:18):
Yeah, I mean.
Speaker 8 (47:21):
It's tough now because all of our guys and like.
Speaker 7 (47:23):
We were able to see every one of our guys'.
Speaker 8 (47:25):
Career play out, Like I felt like Danny Sownson was that.
I don't feel like Danny got a lot of play
because all the attention was on Kyle and Ziggy, especially
in that twenty twelve defense. But Danny was such and
Danny was by the way you say offense or defense,
but Danny was.
Speaker 7 (47:43):
He was our special team's MVP.
Speaker 4 (47:45):
Yeah, they were awesome.
Speaker 8 (47:46):
You know, he was tremendous on specialty and honestly that
position that they had him, he was more just the
way that Bronco ran that defense in his position. In
that defense, Danny was much more like, hey man, you're
the backstop. And because we have security and you, it
frees us up to allow like Kyle and Wona and
Zagi to go do and play their games.
Speaker 7 (48:07):
But but like Dan, he's like a guy.
Speaker 8 (48:10):
But no one will say that now because he's a
super Bowl winner and he had a great you know,
he got a ten year career in the NFL, So.
Speaker 7 (48:15):
Nobody's now going to say that he was underseeniorunder preciate.
But in the moment, it kind of felt like that.
I I don't see. What's hard for me is I
just I feel like.
Speaker 8 (48:22):
At every position group and we've got we've got known commodity.
That's the thing is I feel like we have such
a breadth of familiarity with this team that coach j
Hill maybe it was him getting here and getting to
Noah's roster I feel like the rotations are pretty liberal here,
that we've seen a lot of the guys that we're
gonna do.
Speaker 7 (48:41):
Like when you first were asking me this question.
Speaker 8 (48:43):
Like Mike, my mind krying of went to Parker Kingston,
but that dude.
Speaker 7 (48:46):
Was like a trick play savant last year.
Speaker 8 (48:49):
And then of course no one is ever gonna forget
the punt returns against Kansas State and in Colorado, not
to mention just how consistent he was throughout.
Speaker 7 (48:57):
Like so, Parker Kingston's.
Speaker 8 (48:59):
About as close as I got for you there on
on the defensive side of the football. Kind of hard,
I'll admit as a quarterback offensive guy, and maybe haven't
been falling as closely as I could have during camp
to be able to give you a dark horse on
the defense. But I do feel like there's gonna be
just a lot of familiar production with this team, which
is another reason that we have for optimism of a
(49:20):
great year.
Speaker 3 (49:22):
Love that Riley floor and ceiling. I know we've talked
about this in the past. What do you think the
floor in the ceiling is for this BA football team
from a win loss perspective regular season those twelve games.
Speaker 8 (49:33):
Yeah, this is assuming nothing catastrophic happens, right, So like
floor is eight eight and for a regular season ceiling
is eleven.
Speaker 7 (49:45):
Like yeah, like I give it eleven wins.
Speaker 8 (49:49):
I say eleven because I think this team can compete
for the conference championship. Their non conference doesn't seem to
be too formidable, so I don't see him dropping one
non conference and then in conference if they're gonna, if
they're going gonna, you know, make it to the conference
championship game, which I think they have a very good
chance of doing.
Speaker 7 (50:04):
They can't afford to lose more than one game.
Speaker 8 (50:06):
So that's how I put that ceiling at eleven one
and play playing in the conference championship game for a
spot to buy for the playoffs.
Speaker 7 (50:13):
So that's that's my four ceiling.
Speaker 8 (50:15):
Listen these days, like it's just like with rookie quarterbacks,
Like rookie quarterbacks are not Everyone talks about how you know,
Aaron Rodgers came in and he sat behind far or
the even first rounders used to go in and sit
for a year or two.
Speaker 7 (50:30):
This is not nineteen ninety, this.
Speaker 8 (50:32):
Is twenty twenty five. And so the fact that Bear's
a freshman and for all the reasons that you you
know that we've laid out previously in this conversation, like
that's as soon as we kick the ball off against
Portland State on Saturday, that no longer becomes an excuse.
Speaker 7 (50:47):
Like seriously, if you, if.
Speaker 8 (50:48):
You know ball and you're actually going to be in
on this Cougar team, you can no longer say, well,
he's just a freshman, because moral victories disappear and we
have to put our faith in coach Tutake that the
twenty two dudes that he's putting out on that field
on Saturday are giving us the best chance to accomplish
our goals, which our goals are conference championship and a
playoff appearance.
Speaker 7 (51:08):
And so that's that's my ceiling.
Speaker 4 (51:12):
Love that final.
Speaker 3 (51:13):
Actually, one last thing for you, does by you under Kalanie,
in your opinion, tend to regress after a double digit
win season, right after a high level season. There's a
couple of examples that people have brought up to me
twenty sixteen to twenty seventeen. I know the nine and
four season twenty sixteen was not a double digit win season,
(51:36):
but you were like eight points away from being undefeated.
I mean, you were like right there, right there was
a couple of things that could have bounced your way.
So it was a really it was a good football season.
You end up with one of the worst seasons in
twenty seventeen to b AA football history.
Speaker 8 (51:48):
Do you want me to do you want me to
address that one now or wait for your name the other?
Speaker 4 (51:51):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (51:52):
Like, who's who's the Taysoum? Who's the Taysum that we lost?
Who's the four year starter?
Speaker 7 (51:56):
Who's the dude?
Speaker 8 (51:57):
It is like, the is a ten year pro who
was doing things in the NFL that no one saw,
let alone that did things at BYU that we didn't see.
Who's that that we're losing? Oh and by the way,
who's his counterpart? Who's an eight year or a nine
year NFL pro at running back?
Speaker 7 (52:13):
Like?
Speaker 8 (52:13):
Who were those that we lost from the twenty twenty
four team? So to me, that's an invalid that's an
invalid comparison. Like the next one.
Speaker 3 (52:21):
Yeah, so no, the next one would be because you
still had a double digit win season. Right in twenty
twenty one. You went ten and three. You lost the
UAB in the bowl game, which wasn't good. There was
a little bit of a pride cycle there one't up
for that game.
Speaker 7 (52:34):
That's crazy. You still made it to ten wins. Yeah,
that lost such.
Speaker 8 (52:37):
A bad taste in my mouth, being down in Shreveport
and just miserable, rusty old stadium and losing to UAB.
Speaker 7 (52:43):
But that's but the argument.
Speaker 3 (52:45):
The argument actually resides in the eight and five season
following that, when you had a lot of NFL talent
go down that twenty twenty two roster and all the
returning production.
Speaker 4 (52:54):
He went eight and five.
Speaker 3 (52:55):
He ended up in the New Mexico Bowl versus SMU.
It was a good win in the New Mexico Bowl,
but it was the bit.
Speaker 7 (53:00):
But it was sol Ja Mayava.
Speaker 8 (53:02):
It was sol Ja maiava Peters that won that game,
you know what I mean. And that's it to me.
That's the story of that season. And we've talked about
Florida ceiling. I made sure I had to disclaimer barring injury.
Speaker 5 (53:11):
We know that Jaren.
Speaker 8 (53:12):
I mean, I know he had a shoulder at some point,
and I know he had a rib at some point,
and I know he didn't miss many games till the
end there, but like he was, he was dinged up
from the get go and then didn't wasn't pooka battle
in a hamstring and then Samson also Samson was also out.
So like to me, I tracked that one up a
little bit to twenty twelve, where like the injury bug
(53:33):
bit him, we didn't get bitten twenty twelve on the
defensive side of the ball with the injury bug as much. Uh,
But offensive we were we were depleted, like we we
were limping uh.
Speaker 7 (53:44):
To finish that season.
Speaker 5 (53:46):
We did.
Speaker 8 (53:46):
We we barely even had a too deep I remember
one point we released it too deep and we had
the same player as the backup at three different offensive
line positions because we were because we were so thin,
we didn't even have a real thing. So that's that's
why I talk up to that eight and five because
what were the Obviously Liberty was tough, but I mean
that team won eleven games. We had the Notre Dame loss?
(54:08):
What were some of the losses in that eight and five?
Speaker 3 (54:10):
The twenty twenty two season was interesting for a number
of reasons, right, I would say as I evaluated.
Speaker 4 (54:21):
There were some good wins.
Speaker 3 (54:22):
Obviously you started with some some really you know good wins.
Remember the win versus us you had the DOUBLET. Yeah,
you got destroyed by Oregon at Oregon. That was the
f the Mormons chant from the student section. You beat Wyoming,
you beat Utah State, you lost to Notre Dame.
Speaker 4 (54:40):
That see that one.
Speaker 3 (54:42):
That one was really bad because like we just decided
not to guard the tight end, and he was a
really good tight end, but he wasn't like a thirteen
reception over two hundred yards in a game tight end,
Like we just we decided to cover.
Speaker 8 (54:52):
We got caught a little bit up in our pride,
like thinking like this dude's good, but he's not that good.
We don't have to bracket him or we don't have
to corner him. And they called our blowoff.
Speaker 3 (55:00):
And beat US Arkansas at home thirty five fifty two. Uh,
we got destroyed, remember by Liberty. That was like their
like marquee game of the season. That was like their
super Bowl because of their history they won. Liberty's athletic
department was literally built in the same image and likeness
as that of Notre Dame and BYU.
Speaker 4 (55:18):
That's their mission.
Speaker 3 (55:19):
They wanted to be a religious institution that could promulgate
their faith through athletics, and so like Hugh Freeze beating
Cut anyways, that that was a big loss.
Speaker 4 (55:28):
That was a drubbing.
Speaker 2 (55:29):
You lost the e.
Speaker 3 (55:30):
CU at home, Dude, you lost You lost the ECU
at home after that too.
Speaker 8 (55:36):
Yeah, but that's where I say, to that point, like
I don't and look, well, it depends on how heavily you.
Speaker 7 (55:43):
Want to weag injuries. That's what I'll say there, because.
Speaker 8 (55:45):
By that point, I know Jaren was like held together
with you know, icy hot and athletic tape, so and
like and like.
Speaker 7 (55:53):
He's your he's your best player. He's the one that
made that go.
Speaker 8 (55:56):
The other thing that I'll say is had they love Yeah,
Tyler wasn't on that team?
Speaker 9 (56:04):
Right?
Speaker 7 (56:05):
Or was Tyler still on that team?
Speaker 5 (56:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (56:06):
I think that particular season. Oh now I'm forgetting here.
Speaker 3 (56:12):
I think Tyler's last year was twenty twenty one. It
was twenty twenty one.
Speaker 8 (56:17):
So that that's what I was gonna say is is
Jared lot That's what I remember is Jared lost his
safety like it and so like again from last year,
who is the you know, NFL draft pick producer that
we that we lost you know, last year.
Speaker 6 (56:31):
On the.
Speaker 7 (56:34):
And so.
Speaker 8 (56:36):
That one's okay, like I'll buy I guess here's the
thing that The original question was does Kline not know
to how to handle the success of a double digit
season and does this mean we're headed for a letdown?
And I think I losing case and Jamal like that's
out of the question because that's not even comparable.
Speaker 7 (56:56):
And then this next season, just like I said, are kind.
Speaker 8 (56:59):
Of like how I've evaluated this is you get a
couple like Jared stays healthier, Puka stays healthier, and then
you got want we weren't really we didn't really have
any close losses.
Speaker 7 (57:10):
Hum.
Speaker 8 (57:11):
That's that's what's hard to say that the ball maybe
didn't bounce our way. But if the injury bug maybe
plays itself out a little bit differently, maybe you don't
lose to ECU, maybe you don't lose to Liberty, and
now all of a sudden you're at ten wins.
Speaker 7 (57:23):
This might be cope.
Speaker 8 (57:25):
I don't like this, Ben, I'm feeling like I'm making excuses.
Speaker 5 (57:27):
I mean, champions don't make excuses.
Speaker 8 (57:29):
So the reality is, look, you gotta come out the
way you want to know how you avoid a letdown.
You go one and oh each week, and that's what
we're going into. I'm on the Portland State and making
sure we take down the pilots.
Speaker 3 (57:41):
All I care about is I am an individual that
likes to stay humble, stay hungry. You're never as good
as you think you really are. Everyone who's highly competitive
in this field. For instance, you're very good at what
you do, Riley, and you compete and you win in Utah.
But if you go up against the Riley Nelson of
calif Fifornia head to head, you may take some els.
Speaker 4 (58:02):
Along the way.
Speaker 3 (58:03):
Right, and that's what we're facing with college football, right
You're going against some really good football teams, the best
football teams in each individual state.
Speaker 4 (58:10):
We'll see how it plays out.
Speaker 5 (58:11):
Riley.

Speaker 3 (59:43):
Issencha for the best service in the business. All right,
let's get into it. BAU Football announced the twenty twenty
five team Leadership Council.
Speaker 4 (59:51):
This was earlier this week.
Speaker 3 (59:52):
You got captains and co captains voted on by the players.
Speaker 4 (59:55):
The seventeen team member.
Speaker 3 (59:57):
The seventeen sorry, seventeen member team Leadership Council consists of
five captains and twelve co captains, representing all three phases
of the team offense, defensive, of course, special team. Senior
wide receiver Chase Robinson was against selected by his peers
as a team captain after serving in that capacity last season,
while twenty twenty four co captains Jack Kelly, a senior linebacker,
and Tanner wall A senior safety, joined him in being
(01:00:19):
named captains for the twenty twenty five seasons. Junior defensive
tackle cauntal To Navasa, in his first season in Provo
after transferring from Utah, and junior running back l J.
Martin were also voted as twenty twenty five team captains.
Senior kicker Will Farron, senior defensive end Logan Lutwis, senior
safety Tallan Alfree, and senior offensive lineman Wayland Lapoix, who
will also repeats selections by their teammates to fulfill leadership
(01:00:42):
roles as co captains for the second straight season. Additional
co captains on the defense include senior cornerback Moriy Bomba,
senior defensive lineman John Tomway, PEU junior safety Raider De Mooney,
and junior linebacker Isaiah Glasker. The other offensive co captains
include senior tight end Carson Ryan, junior offensive tackle Andrew Gentry,
junior center Bruce Mitchell, and fresh freshman.
Speaker 4 (01:01:05):
Quarterback Bear Bachmeyer.
Speaker 3 (01:01:07):
Love that shout out to the leadership council BYU Sports Illustrated,
Casey Lunguish put his top ten BYU Football Players for
the twenty twenty five season. Crazy times up here, he's
putting Isaiah Glasker as his number one player on the team.
Crazy led the Big twelve's top drank defense with seventy
(01:01:29):
tackles last year, fifteen tackles for a loss, four sacks,
three interceptions, and more at potential NFL Draffick with prototypical size,
I would say a typical size at that position, six five,
two forty. His versatility is tremendous. Glasgers Bau's top defensive player.
Is he the best player on the roster? Guys Ronald
(01:01:49):
and Andrew, do you think he's the best prospect to
get to be the most productive player on this roster?
Speaker 4 (01:01:55):
The best player.
Speaker 10 (01:01:57):
I feel like sometimes we're a little respectful to Jack
Kelly because I feel like they both play very It
just feels like Glasker is as they're on the same level,
but Glasger's role is a little bit more highlighted.
Speaker 4 (01:02:14):
I think Jack Kelly, I don't know.
Speaker 10 (01:02:17):
It's just really hard for me to say that Jack
Kelly is not every bit as good as Isaiah Glasker is.
Speaker 4 (01:02:25):
They're different. Isaiah's in coverage a lot more.
Speaker 3 (01:02:27):
He was his length to pick off passes, but he's
also involved the pass pass rush game.
Speaker 4 (01:02:32):
Jack is gonna be.
Speaker 3 (01:02:35):
More of a pass rusher, right, and uh, and he's
still pretty versatile in coverage. But I think you're right.
I do believe that there's a there there's an.
Speaker 4 (01:02:44):
Argument to me.
Speaker 3 (01:02:45):
Now, Jack is coming in at number three, so not
too far behind Chase Roberts at number two.
Speaker 10 (01:02:48):
Well, and and isn't Keanutanovasa projected as like a number
of like a first or second round draft pick, that's
what they're projecting. Yeah, it's like, how how are we
gonna say? And this is in disrespect to Iach Glasker,
but I'm not ready to put him above a first
or second round draft pick.
Speaker 4 (01:03:05):
Yeah, it's it's a great debate.
Speaker 3 (01:03:07):
Chase Robbins coming in at number two senior receiver at
eight hundred and fifty yards eight hundred and fifty one yards,
four touchdowns, seventy two point two percent catch rate, excelling
in contesta catch at seventy seven point eight percent. Roberts
is a critical security planket for Buoy's offensive potential.
Speaker 4 (01:03:20):
One thousand yard receiver. Jack Kelly is at number three.
Speaker 3 (01:03:23):
Top pass rushing linebacker with potential for ten plus sacks
if used.
Speaker 4 (01:03:26):
As an age rusher.
Speaker 3 (01:03:27):
Kelly ranked high nationally in sacks, pressures, and QB hits
last year, boosting Bou's defensive ceiling.
Speaker 5 (01:03:33):
L J.
Speaker 3 (01:03:33):
Martin coming in at number four, Boy's offense hinges On Martin,
whose return from injury last season boosted the team's yards
per carry from four point one to five point one.
A dual threat with improved speed, he could be the
Big twelve's best back. Caneleton Avasi, coming to a number five,
a Utah transfer to Tanovase, is Boi's most talented defensive
(01:03:53):
tackle since cayros Stone.
Speaker 4 (01:03:55):
Got agree with that.
Speaker 3 (01:03:56):
The five quarterback hits in seven games last season pretty
nice because he was injured a lot. He's a projected
first round NFL pick for the twenty twenty six draft class.
Waitlan Lapoa, who coming in at number six, a senior
with two one hundred and sixty six career snaps and
only three sacks allowed. Lapooi, Who's versatility across guard and
tackle positions makes him a cornerstone of Bay's offensive line.
(01:04:18):
Tanner Wall coming at number seven, per Boa Sports Illustrated,
a former Walk on turn captain while allowed just four
catches and no touchdowns on three hundred and fifteen covered
snaps last season. His grit and leadership and body boy spirit,
he's more than grit, guys. I mean he's six', one
like two hundred pounds and he's a four to four,
legitimate four to four legitimate laser forty.
Speaker 4 (01:04:39):
Time like he do.
Speaker 3 (01:04:40):
You he tracked down The Oklahoma state running or wi
excuse me quarterback from behind and ended up like it
was getting into dire straits with That Oklahoma state game
Until Tanner wall injured that. QUARTERBACK i forget his name,
now he would have to google it real.
Speaker 9 (01:04:56):
Quick Oklahoma state. Quarterback, yeah they got injured. Back it
Was aska did?
Speaker 5 (01:05:00):
It wasn't?
Speaker 7 (01:05:01):
It?
Speaker 3 (01:05:01):
No, no that Was Oli. Gordon he had two Players
isao was Injuring Ali. Gordon so they took out two.
Speaker 10 (01:05:07):
Guys Oklahoma state quarterback would have been Rang, Gell, Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:05:11):
Rango?
Speaker 9 (01:05:11):
Yeah who Was virginia right there At rangel and transfer To.
Speaker 3 (01:05:15):
Virginia, yeah because so he he got the, start remember, like,
hey he was on a fifty yard, Run that's what it.
Speaker 9 (01:05:20):
Was and he got tackled from behind By Tenner wall
And Jacob robinson at the bottom and. Landed that's just
unfortunately you just land on your shoulder the wrong. Way
but T wall took him out though he all got.
Speaker 5 (01:05:28):
Him you.
Speaker 3 (01:05:29):
KNOW i, Mean i'm not asking for. Injuries i'm just
saying that was a great play by T.
Speaker 4 (01:05:32):
Wall showed.
Speaker 9 (01:05:33):
Me you stopped the touchdown from, Happening that's What i'm.
Saying in the, process you took out the.
Speaker 3 (01:05:37):
Quarterback, yeah, Man i'm, saying and that quarterback was doing some.
