a phenomenal rugby player as well. Gonna get his inside
and knowledgist to what this Cougar football team is made of.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Welcome in six foot one, two hundred and five pounds
of solid muscle, maybe eight percent body fat. To this day,
he's multiplying and replenishing the earth with future BYU Cougar
football players and regular players. We've got Johnny Lenehan on
the line. Johnny, how the heck are you?
Speaker 4 (01:40):
I'm good.
Speaker 5 (01:41):
I don't think I've grown to six to one, but
the waistline's definitely growing.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
However, it might be lit out of breath.
Speaker 5 (01:46):
I just got upstairs from racing one of our sales
reps on the rowing machine. So trying to keep up
with the youngins these days.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
Love it, man, Glad you're doing well, Johnny, let's talk
about this. BYU Football Team twenty twenty five, first off
pull of the day for all the Cougar fans. We
got four days of data, four days of reports, four
days of inside and knowledge from all the media members
and of course your insiders that are within the building
where you're leaning right now in the quarterback battle? Is
(02:15):
it bear Bachmeyer's at McKay Hillstead, is it Tracon Borgay?
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Is it? Have you not decided?
Speaker 3 (02:21):
Are you kind of in between and not willing to
put your name on the line here.
Speaker 5 (02:27):
It's whoever doesn't throw rid zone interceptions when we're a
twelve ranked team against Kansas at home.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
So whoever can do that, they can be the gang.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Let him be that guy. Don't underthrow a goal line fade,
and you can be the guy. Hand the ball off,
running a little bit, don't get injured, and then don't
throw goal line fades, underthrown intro ionts.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
That's it, That's right.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
No, I mean, I'm pretty excited.
Speaker 5 (02:52):
I usually stay out of the loop on the recruiting game,
I mean, and even some of the insider stuff. I
jump on Twitter to get my news, but everybody asks
me for insider information. Even when I was on the team,
they were like, oh, did you know Jamal Lift.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
I was like, I had no idea. I did think
it was weird. His locker was empty when I woke
past this morning. But I had no idea. So I
have no inside of tied bits.
Speaker 5 (03:13):
But it looks like it's McKay hillstiad o Bear's race
to win, and I'm excited for both of them.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
Yeah, it's an exciting time to be a Cougar fan
and a Cougar alum, no doubt. What's your win loss prediction?
At least give me a little bit of analysis here.
I think the over under is set at six and
a half per Vegas, so Vegas a little bit more
optimistic as it pertains to be.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
Yu.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
Joel Klatt hopped onto his podcast says you should sell
stock BYU stock right now because they lost Jake retch Lava.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
They just can't. They can't.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
I guess you know, recover from that loss is what
Joel Clatt is saying.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
But what say you, Johnny? Where do you stand?
Speaker 4 (03:56):
Oh man? I would I would buy all day on
the six and a half.
Speaker 5 (03:59):
I do think, just my heart, I don't know if
I can believe in another season like last year because
that was quite special and I don't want to get
my hopes stashed, but I think eight wins is the floor. Absolutely,
especially with the schedule this year, I think it is
a little bit easier than it has been in previous years.
And Jake was great. He was a phenomenal leader. I
loved having him on the team. He was great for
(04:20):
the program. But I also don't think he made or
broke us last year.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
I think the.
Speaker 5 (04:25):
Defense is still phenomenal this year, led by Jay Hill,
who knows how many more seasons, So I think we're
going to do just fine there.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
And I think just as long as we.
Speaker 5 (04:35):
Can get a quarterback in that can do just enough,
we should be able to get eight, nine, even more
wins this year.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
So I'm definitely on the overside of the Vegas line.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
You want just like someone that is a game manager,
if you can manage the game not mess it up.
As Gordon Behakley once said, don't muff it. If you
don't muff it, we can win a lot of football
games this year.
Speaker 4 (04:58):
Absolutely.
Speaker 5 (04:59):
I think that's that that's the key, right, don't try
to do too much. And I think if you can
never really knock a player for doing too much, but
I do think Jake last year probably tried to do
too much at times, and it was kind of reminding
me a lot of Zach Wilson when he was younger.
Tried to do too much right, took a deep sack
instead of throwing it away, forced to pass instead of
throwing it away, got killers with the football instead of
(05:20):
just taking it to the ground.
Speaker 4 (05:22):
So if you can just get someone that cuts the losses.
Speaker 5 (05:24):
And manages the game, I think we'll be just fine.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
Johnny Linahan, former b YU Great Special Team are here
on ESPN the Fan Now, Johnny can be why you
continue to be elite elite in Special Teams unit productivity.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
What do you make of what's occurred over the last years.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
It's been tremendous watching this Special Teams unit perform.
Speaker 5 (05:50):
Yeah, well maybe that's because you look back and I said,
such a low bar or anything is better than that.
So the Special teams have been phenomenal to watch lately,
and I think that that is one that's absolutely controllable
if you look at how much talent there is, especially
within the Church for kickers and punters. My buddy, he's
probably going to win the job for the Jets this year,
(06:11):
and then we'll have two LDS punters in the league.
So there's a lot of really phenomenal talent through the
special teams that we should be able to attain, no doubt.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Yeah, that's the thing, you know, It's more than just
kicking and punting though, Like the kickoff returns, the punt
returns that are occurring. I just wonder if there's a
sustainable stat Is that a sustainable metric to have that
type of explosivity, productivity from your return game.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
Well, you know where I stand on kickoffs.
Speaker 5 (06:41):
I hate to see them, especially I hate them less
when they return them for a touchdown, as we did
a few times last year, especially against Utah that was awesome.
But again, it's like not making mistakes and limiting liability
on the returns, and I think we just have such
a great scheme everybody doing their job and playing their
eleventh and that's what it was. When I was on
(07:02):
the team, Coach Lane was a big proponent of the
best players play special teams. So we had a lot
of really talented players playing special teams. If you look
at my punt team, we had Fred Warner, Zane Anderson,
Dian Lake.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
Chris Wilcox.
Speaker 5 (07:16):
We had NFL players on the special teams and that's
how it is to this day. Uau's culture is the
best play and they make plays, and it doesn't have
to be on offensive defense.
Speaker 4 (07:26):
You can change the game on special teams.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
That's a way to win.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
It's three facets of a football team, and we as
BYU fans, we tend to adore and worship the offensive productivity.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
I see the tides turning a bit.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
I see BYU fans saying we can win through defense,
we can win through special teams. We don't need a quarterback.
I mean, I thought we were QBU. I thought we
were the quarterback factory. Johnny, what's happened? What is kugarnation drinking?
Speaker 4 (07:58):
We still need a quarterback.
Speaker 5 (07:59):
If we have a quarterback, that's the full package, right,
It is the most important position on the field. So
again that is a huge question mark. So people selling
stock are probably right to do so I hope we
can prove them wrong, and I'm confident that we can.
But the fun thing I was thinking about it today
is I really like individual sports because you can't blame
anybody else but team sports especially because you can lift
(08:23):
everybody else, and whether it's team in regards to sports
or team in regards to family or business, everybody doing
their job can lift everybody else.
Speaker 4 (08:31):
And motivate and aspire.
Speaker 5 (08:33):
So then you really get the one plus one equals
three unless you have that true synergy magic happens.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
Johnny Lenahan, Ladies and gentlemen, a little keeping up with
the cougar segment brought to you buy Odion Men's where
Odion Men'swear dot com. As far as the quarterback racist concern,
are you, like, I know, you know that, you know,
don't have any insight, You don't have any insight or
knowledge here, But like, are you more prone to store
(09:00):
the tenured somewhat Vet McKay hillstead duel threat to transferrom
Utah State who has been in the system.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
For well over a year now, or are you.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
The type that's like, hey, like, we got a four
star quarterback and if there's not much of a difference
between these two guys, we got to roll with the
youth in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 5 (09:23):
Yeah, I'm kind of I'm probably in the case camp
right now just because he has that experience.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
Now, well, was a phenomenal note. Could he be absolutely?
Speaker 5 (09:31):
Am I a little bit prone to supporting the short
kings one hundred percent? But I also think you saw
last year right the Utah, for example, really want Isaac Wilson.
They celebrated when they got him. They threw him in
a little bit too early and his confidence got shot.
Right now, he might be back this year because he
is a very talented quarterback. But I do think you
(09:51):
run the risk of throwing someone to the wolves or
into the fire a little too prematurely, and it can
damage them for a long time.
Speaker 4 (09:58):
So I think the coaches will make whatever the right
to say decision is.
Speaker 5 (10:00):
I don't think they're looking at youth over experience.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
I think they're just looking at who's going to perform
in the best and who's going to put the best
forward for the team.
Speaker 5 (10:08):
So that's what's great for fall camp is they're going
to compete against each other and the coaches will make
the best decision, and hopefully both of them can stick
it out because they've got long careers ahead.
Speaker 4 (10:17):
Of them and they can be great for the Kudes
in one way or the other.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
What do you like about the special teams right now?
As far as the kicker and punter are concerned, What
do you like about Will Farren and Sam vander Hohr.
And I do think there's there's maybe a pro style
kicker that's trying to push. Sam vanderhhr as well came
into the program and had a good spring, but and
I think he forced Landon Rico out to Utah Steak.
(10:43):
Kind of an interesting You very rarely see these these
punter battles in spring ball. By the way, I thought
that was interesting this past spring. But give me your
take on Sam Vanderhrr and Will Ferren.
Speaker 5 (10:55):
Yeah, I mean two experienced specialists and performance phenomenally last year,
not just with the but with the ball in hands too.
They were incredible when the number was called.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
And I love Will. You probably won't find a more
humble person.
Speaker 5 (11:09):
I think God didn't let me kick a game because
I would always talk about it every day.
Speaker 4 (11:15):
But Will's Will's kind of indifferent. He's just super humble.
Speaker 5 (11:17):
That's his job and he's living his dream and doing
it really well. And Sam's right there with him, more
of a laid back Ozzie who's just privileged to be
in the position he's in and non Healds kid that's
embraced the BYU lifestyle. So there's a lot to like
about the kicker and punter right now.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
The BYU has.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
No doubt about it.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Johnny Lenahan here on ESP of the Fan Briefly, Johnny,
what are you doing for work?
Speaker 6 (11:39):
Man?
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Give us an update?
Speaker 4 (11:42):
Yeah? So I work for a company called Jolt Software.
Speaker 5 (11:44):
We do operations management for the disc list space, so
I think the restaurant industry. I work in finance, so
I'm the CFO there and mostly it's just spreadsheets. So
I'm sitting at my desk on Twitter on one screen
and Excel on the other screen, trying to keep up
with the coops.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Love it, man?
Speaker 3 (12:01):
How can people get ahold of you? How could they
connect with you if they're in need of your services?
Speaker 4 (12:07):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (12:07):
Man, I respond better to Twitter than anything else, as
you know, so if you need me reach out on Twitter.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
I'm more than happy to help when I can.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
What have you seen recently on Twitter that you're intrigued
by anything?
Speaker 2 (12:19):
By you re lated? Do you want to chime in on.
Speaker 5 (12:23):
Just I hope that the money continues to funnel in
for the coops because the nil is interesting.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
I obviously really love BYU.
Speaker 5 (12:30):
I was born a fan, was fortunate to be a player,
and now I'm a fan again.
Speaker 4 (12:34):
The NIL dynamic is tough.
Speaker 5 (12:36):
Because you're going to get players coming into the program
that might not necessarily be brought into the program, and
it's going to be a really interesting time to see
how we navigate it. But as fans, what we can
do is just chair on the guys in blue and
not get too caught up in any of the transfer
of portal stuff. Let's just support the guys who choose
to show up.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
In the season starts and be loud and proud.
Speaker 2 (12:58):
You did.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
You did drop a gift, a jiff, whatever you call
it on the Jake Retzlaf sound his SoundBite from two
Lane media availability that dropped on it. I believe on Friday,
did you shed a tier or two with those words?
Those poignant words, powerful words from Jake.
Speaker 4 (13:19):
Yeah, it was awesome.
Speaker 5 (13:20):
I think what he does, what he said and shared,
embodies everything that Kalani's trying to build at b YU.
Speaker 4 (13:26):
I think there's no more perfect person.
Speaker 5 (13:29):
To be leading the football team than Klinie Satake and
privileged just to know him and learn from his example,
and that's why I really hope the team continues to
have his back and perform on the field, because I
would love to see him be the next level.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
One of my one of our contributors here co hosts
and content creators, Andrew Peterson said this is his hot
take on the matter.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
Listening to Jake and I want to get your thoughts on it.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
Jake Retzlaf still loving b YU after everything fell apart
says a lot more about how good the culture is
there at b then the commitment of big time recruits
because there's no money involved in him still loving Bayu.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
It speaks volumes to me agree or disagree.
Speaker 4 (14:09):
F one hundred percent agree.
Speaker 5 (14:10):
And I think that's the thing that's easy to get
caught up if you're not a BA fan, is the
rivalry factor that oh BYU tries to be holy, then
now they try to be bitter, and that just frankly
isn't true. I mean, at the end of the day,
these BYA students, they're just eighteen to twenty two, maybe
twenty four to twenty five year old kids, and they're
going to make mistakes. They're interested in the same things
(14:32):
that everybody else is interested in. They have shortcomings like
everybody does. And they're not perfect, and sometimes we expect
them on the outside looking in to be perfect, and
so it's easy to amplify their mistakes. But when you
get to know these kids and their intentions and their hearts,
you realize that they are pretty pure and that they
do mean well even if they do make mistakes. It's
just unfortunate that some of the more public than others.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
Yeah, how do you feel about the public stockading of
honor code violations?
Speaker 5 (15:00):
It's kind of it comes with the territory, which is unfortunate,
but it's it's easy to easy to judge and get
caught up in it. But it is interesting that when
it comes to buy you you're guilty until proven innocent,
and even if you're proven innocent, you're you always have
that on your back. And so it's really unfortunate what happened.
That will continue to be unfortunate when it happens. But
what we can do is just support the kids and
(15:21):
and uh, just be confident that I'll continue to make
the right decisions and chair.
Speaker 4 (15:25):
Them on on and off the field.
Speaker 3 (15:27):
Yeah, it's uh, you know, well, said Johnny Lenahan. Ladies
and gentlemen always appreciate our time together. Thanks for uh
joining us for a little keeping up with the cougar segment.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
Yeah, I'm more than happy to you. Go Koops, Let's.
Speaker 3 (15:41):

Speaker 2 (16:18):
Ronnie, any thoughts, any commentary.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
Follow up before we move on to the next segment
of Cougar Sports.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
Yeah, I think a couple of things.
Speaker 7 (16:23):
Let's start with the first and the last thing you
mentioned about what Andrew Peterson said. The culture is why
we've heard that family one of my official visits. Now,
let's let's not deter the cultures good, but it's because
they're winning to like, I don't think if they were
winning at a high level, then I don't think that
play a factor. Sorry, the culture is the first thing.
But now that you're winning with that culture, yeah, if
that plays a factor. You don't get recruits unless you perform,
(16:46):
unless you do all on the field. But it is
not all about the money we need to take away
from everyone's paying. I think with the conference nature, you'll
not you get your market rate. But it's because that
culture has proven to win and get talent to the
next level. I think that's why hec recruits committing and
something else that you know he mentioned that was impactful
is Jake redslife, believing in Kolonie Sataki Like being a
(17:08):
guy like that just proves like he's the coach for
the future. I remind people he got an extension. We
don't know how long it was. We're assuming through the
two thousand and you know, thirty one, thirty two, maybe
thirty three seasons somewhere around there. But I'm gonna say
this and I hope this doesn't buck the people. I'm
not comparing the two, but I'm just saying what they
will mean. Kilanie Saitaki by the time he's done, will
(17:28):
be what coach Kyle Whittingham is to the University of Utah.
It will be that in that regards, and Kilanie is
is someone that honestly, when you look in the community,
like and I'm not trying to pin this on him,
but Ben he's it's like the modern day le Velle
in his own way.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
He said he wanted to be that.
Speaker 7 (17:45):
He's doing that, he's speaking at devotional he's out in
the community. Like I like to think, is this the
next visecond him of guy? Is he gonna when he's done?
Is he gonna be, you know, in Salt Lake? Like
he's such a good person. There's more to him than
just being a football coach. And then the last thing,
you gotta love Jay Hill for as long as you
have them. I don't know how long he'll stay, but
I think that's something that's crucial is Kalanney's staff members.
(18:09):
A Rod's a good coach, Bessie's one of a good
recruiter on the staff. You got Harvey, you got Jay,
This coaching staff being able to stay together. We discussed
it last week. It's pivotal. You don't get always in
college football. We're we're able to retain all of your
talent and then promote guys on the defensive side.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
And that's what they've been able to do.
Speaker 7 (18:26):
They've been able to elevate internally, give other assignments and
promote other people already a certain position groups. And you
need to enjoy it whil to last because it's only
a matter of time before some of these coaches are
head coaches and are picked off by other places. You
have to enjoy it, like I'm pretty sure, and I
know I'm connecting this that those that had Kenny Dilleham
elsewhere would have loved to keep him now. But you
(18:47):
see what he's doing in Arizona State. So you have
phenomenal coaches, you have a phenomenal culture. Enjoy it while
the last, because all good things been do eventually come
to an end.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
We'll gotta break guys.
Speaker 3 (18:56):

Carla, Well, let's get into some women's soccer news and notes.
The Blue White scrimmage. How did you see it? What
did you like about what you saw?
Speaker 6 (21:19):
Yeah, I am, I'm feeling good about it. I could
not say the same thing twelve months ago, when BYU
women's soccer had lost almost all their seniors, starting with
brand new freshmen, there were a lot of questions about
the team. Now that that building year is behind us,
the team is looking really good. There's still a lot
of new faces, though, because you have so much experience
(21:40):
returning from the year prior, the team is looking really good.
They for sure look better than they did in last
year's Blue and White game, where there was still so
many unknown questions. But this year it seems like the
way you already has an idea of who they're starting
eleven is going to be with the exception of one
or two pieces, and the team will good. The tempo
(22:01):
was really quick. You saw a lot of fun play,
confident play, and you don't always see that in the
beginning of the season, with players willing to take risks,
and so I think the team is looking good this year.
Speaker 4 (22:15):
I think it'll be a good season for the Kuges.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
Who are the leaders of this squad.
Speaker 3 (22:20):
Who can we expect to stand out, show up, show
out for sure?
Speaker 6 (22:25):
I think it's definitely would be Elie Wallbrook. The Cougar
fans who watched last year and though that she was
out last year with the season ending injury, and one
of was the I was promoted to be one of
the assistant co coaches of the team at the time
because she's just such an integral leader for the team.
But she is back this year.
Speaker 4 (22:43):
She actually got the.
Speaker 6 (22:44):
Two goals for Blue in that Blue and White game,
she got the brace, and she is going to be,
if I can predict, the star of this team. Just
so talented, so quick on the ball, and like I said,
a leader on the team. Everyone looks to her for guidance,
and a lot of that is because of her experience,
but a lot of it is also because of how
she plays. She has a very assertive mentality. When she's
(23:04):
out there, she demands the ball, she demands her teammates
make the right runs and get into the right positions.
And so I think Ellie will definitely be the face
to look for I think another player will be in
the midfield, and I consider these two a duo, so
I'll add a third player. But Micah Cromanhook and Lucy Kessler.
It came in last year as true freshman, played almost
(23:26):
every minute of every game, and even though they're still
so young as sophomore as they are the glue in
the midfield. They are the ones that are connecting and
unlocking everything for the rest of the field. And so
I think those three players are three players that the
fans should keep an eye.
Speaker 4 (23:42):
On this season.
Speaker 7 (23:44):
Yeah, Lucy had a phenomenal season. I remember our first
goal and you could see that the clay is there,
the towns there as well as Mico just you know,
took off was like a lightning bolt. But there's another
lightning bolt on the team she plays up top was
leading goal scorer Ali Fryer. What do you expect from
Ali going into this season? And I expect her along
with Eli to be up there as the two leading
goal scorers this.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
Season for sure.
Speaker 6 (24:06):
And I'm glad that you mentioned that. Hallie I think
still has a big question mark because she was originally
supposed to be out this season, and that's one of
the reasons I didn't mention her is because right now
she is listed as out for a season ending injury.
She missed all of the spring game that she had surgery,
and January the surgery didn't take and so she was
(24:26):
going to be out. But it's been a big question
mark because even though she is scheduled for surgery later
this week, she actually played and got quite a few
minutes in the Blue and White game and played well,
had some good shots, made some good runs. Did not
look like someone who you know is unable to play
from injury, and so I think there's still a big
(24:46):
TVD on her if she is able, and you're right, RN,
if she is able to play and play to her
you know, full capacity and potential, there is no doubt
that she will be again one of the stars or
one of the leading scores on this team as she
was last season. She plays primarily as the target striker,
so she plays in that center position and her job
(25:07):
is just to get the ball, turn and shoot, turn
and shoot, very similar to that of like an Ashley Hatch.
And so if she is able to play this season
and play to her best ability without injury, then she
will make a big impact on the team. I think
the question will be does she keep that surgery scheduled
for this week and is she going to be healthy
(25:29):
enough to play?
Speaker 3 (25:31):
Very intriguing there. You always want to get eyes on
those those injuries, may it cute or chronic injuries, and
how they impact the squad.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
And so my question to you is this last year was.
Speaker 3 (25:44):
A bit of a rebuild. Have we rebuilt in order
to compete at a top twenty five level this year?
What do you see?
Speaker 2 (25:52):
Yes, I do.
Speaker 6 (25:54):
I feel very comfortable saying that. Obviously, it's still very
early on in the season. The team will have their
official season opener at Minnesota and then cal Poly. That'll
give us a better idea. But from what I've seen
in practice and from what I've been seeing in the
Blue and White game, I think this is back to
the BYU that we recognize that will compete and play
(26:14):
very well. Uh you know, do they win the conference
tournament at the end?
Speaker 4 (26:19):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (26:20):
I'll have to wait to see how TCU is looking,
as TCU is the favorite to win it. But that
being said, this is a team that I could see
making a deep run, if not to the finals of
the conference tournament. And I do for c BYU winning
a majority of their games and getting a seed for
the NCAA Tournament. So I do feel confident in saying
that this team does seem to be looking back to
(26:40):
the traditional BYU that we've seen in years past.
Speaker 7 (26:44):
Carla, we saw BYU post the roster of the players
that would be there for the season. We saw the
blue and white scrimmage. No, Lynette Arnez is it? I
think that's how you said, right. I did not see
her U listed on the raws season ending injury was
to ed bid on Lynette.
Speaker 6 (27:04):
No, it's It's one of the big, probably the biggest
storyline that we're sitting out of BYU Women's soccer now
is Lynette Hernez Bryant decided to leave the sport. So
she didn't transfer. She's not on injury, but she decided
to leave the sport just days before the season started,
and no one saw that coming. I've chatted with the
coaching staff and with some of the other players, and
(27:25):
they did not They were not expecting that. Coincidentally, my
father Jason Swinson, who was just on your show a
few days ago, did a story on Hernez about the
upcoming season and her thoughts, and you know, she gave
him a great interview about the season and what she
expected from herself and from the team. And so I
don't think anybody saw this coming, but she called the
(27:47):
coaches just a few days before the season started said
she would be leaving. And now the question is who
will be the new starting goalkeeper? Again, it was so unexpected.
There are you know, several players who I think are
looking to fill in those shoes. Peyton Collins, who has
a very interesting story. She came from UVU not as
a transfer, but played on the UVU women's club team.
(28:10):
She was she's been a great goalkeeper in Utah, but
ultimately didn't play Division one soccer right out of high school,
but she played for the club team and Bran Anderson
and the rest of the coaching staff I've had their
eyes on her for some time. They've brought her in
now as a full you know, Division one goalkeeper, and
Sarah Mathis is another goalkeeper that's coming in and competing
for that time. And so I don't know if the
(28:32):
coaching staff knows yet who will be thus starter. They
probably have a good idea at this point, but it
has been a tumultuous few days for by women's soccer
in trying to fill what is arguably the most important
position on the field.
Speaker 3 (28:46):
Yeah, this is a very unique. I don't know how
often this happens. Ever, Yeah, I'm surprised, but I mean
we're days before kickoff of the season and and if
someone leaves your program to pivotal piece, can they fill.
Speaker 6 (29:03):
That starting goalkeeper?
Speaker 1 (29:05):
Yea?
Speaker 3 (29:05):
Can they fell that that that vacancy with with someone
either on the team or or on the outside.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
Do you think?
Speaker 4 (29:14):
Yeah, I think they'll do.
Speaker 6 (29:15):
I think they'll keep with It's hard to say. I
think they'll keep with someone who is currently on the team.
I know the coaching staff is trying to figure out
if they could perhaps bring another player on. There's a
few things that they need to solidify to see if
that can happen or not, just to get a third string.
You know, you never want to be left with no
goalkeepers or with few goalkeepers. And so that's another TVD.
(29:40):
And so it's interesting because the team as a soccer
team is looking really good. They're playing very confidently, they
they are prepared, and yet there are these little pieces
that play an important role that are still to be determined,
you know, as we go into this week of scrimmages.
Speaker 7 (30:00):
Lasting for me on this point. I had a chance
to catch up with coach in the off season at
some point. She laughed at it because you know, she's
all professional, she's all about business. But it was the
timeline on Jennifer Rockall. We've been blessed with greatness. I
would have to think, you know, there, and I'm not
trying to force Jenna. I want I told Jen I
want to see fifty years of coaching. That's not gonna happen.
(30:21):
But she answers thirty one plus years. How long do
you think she has, you know, left in the tank.
She's a goat of you know, one of the go
coaches at BAU, one of the goats of soccer in general.
But I don't think we're going to see too much,
you know, much more of Jenniferroku in the future.
Speaker 6 (30:38):
I really don't know. I really don't know. I mean,
when I'm out there, Jenna is still very much full
of energy and involved and and you know, very dedicated
to the team. So I'm not getting any sort of
vibes or communication that would say she's on her way out.
So I know that's not the answer you're looking for,
but I really don't know, And to be honest, i've
(31:02):
talked to her about it too, and I don't know
if she has a set timeline on it either.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
Can't wait to see what You're right.
Speaker 6 (31:08):
She's been there, She's been there since the beginning. She's
been the only coach for BYU women's soccers, been there
since nineteen ninety five, so she has seen.
Speaker 3 (31:17):
It all, seen it all, done it all, and I
hope twenty twenty five can be a great one for Carla.
Best way to support you. What you do, how you
do it, for all of our listeners before we let you.
Speaker 6 (31:29):

home games at Southfield. I'll be calling it with Greg
Rubel and we've got a great crew behind us, and
so feel free to tune in. This week, we'll just
have two scrimmages. BYU is playing two exhibition matches against
SUU on Wednesday at eight o'clock and then against Utah
(31:53):
Tech on Saturday at seven pm. And again these are
exhibition matches, so they will not count towards the regular record.
It will be televised and after that things are going
to get going. I will highlight that Utah or excuse me,
b YU plays four ranked opponents in their first few
games of the non conference schedule, Minnesota and then UCLA
(32:18):
will be at Southfield on the twenty third, so that'll
be a huge game. If you remember, Elie Wallbrook was
a transfer from UCLA. So for those that want to
come and tune in, come to Southfield. The energy is electric.
But if you're unable to make the drive to Provo,
catch it on ESPN Plus.

They're going to take care of you know, if sands
or butts about it.
Speaker 3 (34:47):
Let's talk Dean Ruker, the number sixty eight overall recruit
in the national twenty twenty six class. He's announcing his
college basketball decision on CBS Sports YouTube channel this evening
seven thirty Mountain time. UH and I can't wait to
see what the six foot eight, one hundred and eighty
pound wing out of Provo tim Few High School does
(35:09):
with his talents? Will he keep it in the family,
Will he keep it local? Or will he will he
look outward? Is gonna be the siding between Brigham Young, Clemson. Okay,
there in the mix Stanford and Utah as well as Washington.
He's only taken two official visits BYU and Washington. You
(35:31):
wonder if that really matters. Here's the scouting report per
two four to seven Sports. The director of scouting Adam Finkelstein,
on what Rukert could bring to one of his finalists.
Rukert is a skilled shooter with a good wing size
at six 't eighty shot thirty six percent from beyond
the arc in eybl play on just under seven attempts
(35:55):
per game, but was a whopping forty seven percent on
the unguarded catch and shoot threes. He has supreme gravity
as a spot up floor spacer, but is also a
movement shooter who can make threes off screens. His release
is compact and extremely repeatable, beginning with very good balance
(36:16):
in his lower body. The threat of Ruker shooting also
opens up the rest of his attack while he may
not have a dynamic first step against set defenders.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
He's a fluid ball handler.
Speaker 3 (36:30):
Very adept at using subtle shot fakes, able to drive
both sides with an advanced left hand and then be
crafty in the lane. He's also an underrated vertical athlete
when he can elevate off two feet and has a
sneaky bounds jumping off his right leg for a right
handed player. As he continues to build up his body,
(36:53):
Adam Finkelstein continues improve his ability to absorb contact and
contain or maintain the line of his drives, his game
will go to new levels.
Speaker 2 (37:03):
His size is going to allow.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
Him to play multiple positions offensively, but he lacks great
strength or sorry great length, and isn't especially elastic or
bendy in his upper body. He has the basketball like
you and awareness to be a reliable team defender, but
needs to establish a primary position on that end of
(37:25):
the floor, either by either by being consistently or being
consistently keeping smaller and quicker wings in front of him,
or by being able to rebound and to hold his
ground against opposing fource. Overall, his shooting skill and potential
to flourish in offensive structure gives him an obvious niche
(37:45):
at the next level, while his ceiling will be determined
by the games he can make with his creation, physical
strength and defensive impact. So, Ronald the three man Weaver,
how you're feeling about BYU's chances right now? He just
finished up up is official recruiting visit last week to
bring them How you're feeling.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
Ben, There's a couple of things.
Speaker 7 (38:06):
One, I just want to say this, I think BYU,
from everything that I've heard, is in a good spot.
So think they're in a good spot. When you have
the entire coaching staff in your recruitment picture, this has
a lot. And I bring it up because you've had
you know, Kevin Young, just with Rob Wright, obviously AJ,
they had everybody. But when you have the entire coaching staff,
(38:28):
like everybody, we're talking about every assistant in the mix,
that tells me that you have.
Speaker 2 (38:32):
A really good relationship.
Speaker 7 (38:35):
I would not be surprised if Dean committed tonight to
b YU. We had discussed it. We've discussed it many
times on the show. Been right, We've been bind on it.
You need the local kids. There's nothing wrong with bringing
in the Rob Rights dajs. But you need the next
Richie Saunders. You need the Dawson Bakers. Dean fits into
that category, y'all. Chamblain Burgen is on a mission right now,
(38:57):
serving down there in Texas. So this is another kid
that I think you need and if you want Ben.
I also heard that they've also looked at, you know,
William Openshaw's teammate. If that's another guy you know that
you're looking for another guy he's played with and aau.
Then this is a good start, you know, recruiting people,
getting one to commit, and then getting friends. Obviously that
(39:18):
that's intriguing. But you got to have these guys in
your back door. You can't let a local product like
this go to Clemson. And I bring up Clemson. Somebody
asked me, why is Clemson the mix? Well, they got
two other LDS kids over there. You know, you got
Carson Welling who left from Utah Valley over there and
Jake Gualleen from Utah Transfer. So Clemson has been able
to recruit and get LDS talent. So that's why they're
in the mix. Don't know if it will happen, but yeah,
(39:39):
I mean having him only take two official visits tells
me a lot, and then BYU being the last one
in the entire coaching staff. From what I heard, I
really like Buyu's chances to land this kid. This is
a kid that you need on the wing, who doesn't
demand the ball, who can do it, and when you
look at what role could he he play in those regards,
I'm not gonna give him a CA it's too early,
(40:01):
but I think you need you need the six foot
seven kid.
Speaker 2 (40:03):
You need this kid, man.
Speaker 7 (40:04):
You need to get the six foot six, six foth
seven kid over to Provo and we'll find out at
seven thirty tonight.
Speaker 2 (40:11):
That we will big time recruit.
Speaker 3 (40:14):
Would be a boon for BYU in the twenty twenty
six basketball recruiting class. Dean Ruker the product at a
tim View High School baller shot collar deciding between BYU, Clemson, Stanford,
Utah six eight, one point eighty lean mean and a
an efficient shooter that can develop into too much more.
(40:35):
I think with a prim, proper and powerful strength and
conditioning program.
Speaker 2 (40:41):
Check it out today.
Speaker 3 (40:42):
Uh, ladies and gentlemen, UH, you're gonna want to stay
tuned at seven thirty later tonight, CBS Sports YouTube Channel.
