staff from my guy BYU stats man earlier this week.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
He says, trivia time.

Speaker 2 (00:47):

this year we will see the fifth D one transfer

you name the previous four to do it. So we're

in one of the most talented quarterbacks to come through
Brigham Young University. He was actually, you know you talk about,
you know, players that balled out in high school. He

(01:51):
was named to several high school All American teams, including
Parade Magazine and USA Today, which named him the Texas
High School Player all the Year in nineteen eighty nine.
Let's welcome in Steve Klevits to the show.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
What's Up? Steve?

Speaker 4 (02:06):
What Up?

Speaker 5 (02:07):
Dude, how are you man?

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Doing good? Man?

Speaker 2 (02:09):
I was a blessing to talk some ball with you
and get caught up on your world. It's great to
chat with you. We ran into each other in the
summer months. Looking fantastic, coaching, staying active.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
Man, give us an update on your world.

Speaker 5 (02:25):
Yeah, no, boy, I'm doing better than I deserve.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
Probably that's not sure. You're good exeter in your life,
my friend.

Speaker 6 (02:35):
Oh, I don't know about all that, but I appreciate it.

Speaker 5 (02:39):
No, things are good.

Speaker 6 (02:41):
I started and I taught coach high school football for
basically the first twenty five years of my professional life.
And then you know, LEI West Leag High School here
in Utah, school down in Texas, bounced around, and then
about six years ago, I started working in the oil

(03:03):
and gas industry, selling fuel and lubricants. So I'll sell
the construction companies, trucking companies and and kind of that
ilk of the downstream oil and gas industry as we
call it.

Speaker 5 (03:19):
And uh, it's really enjoyable. I'm in the sales part
of it.

Speaker 6 (03:23):
And I think as you're as a teacher, as a
coach man, even as a parent, you're you're kind of
always a salesperson, right, And so it's it's interesting because
growing up, probably two professions that I told myself I'd
never want to do was teach and be a sales dude,

(03:43):
because I just I know how much crap I gave
my teachers growing up with a bad kid. But I
was a kid, you know, and I was a male
on top of that. That's a double whammy, right, And
so the crap that I used to give teachers along
with my butt, he's just you know, having fun whatever.

Speaker 5 (04:02):
It's like, dude, there's no way I'd want to do this. Well.

Speaker 6 (04:05):
As my first twenty five years, last six years, I
had a lot of bad.

Speaker 5 (04:10):
Sales experiences, you know, whether that's.

Speaker 6 (04:14):
Used car or whatever. Like, dude, I'm good. I don't like,
don't throw up on me, you know. So but here
I am.

Speaker 5 (04:23):
That's the only two things I've ever done and got
paid for, you know.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
So never you're good at both of them.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
Gosh, singing, and I would say, oil and gas you
being a Texas boy, like it's like this is perfect, harmonious, bliss.
This is what you were born to do. Man's cell
oil and gas.

Speaker 6 (04:40):
Yeah, It's it's nice to be able to speak that language.

Speaker 5 (04:44):
Thats faux show.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Yes, indeed, Steve Clements here on he gives me the
fan I the trivia trivia question. Four quarterbacks that have
transferred into BYU from a Division one school that got
starts at BYU.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
Who are they? Do you know who they are?

Speaker 5 (05:03):
Well?

Speaker 3 (05:03):
I know one of them. Who's one of them?

Speaker 5 (05:06):
Well you're talking a lot of them, yeah, buddy, So
that's easy. Coming out of high school, you ended up
where University of Texas. Why Longhorns? Why?

Speaker 6 (05:19):
Why?

Speaker 5 (05:20):
Oh man? I get asked herself something.

Speaker 6 (05:24):
My dad was a quarterback there in the mid fifties
where he met my mom, who was actually the first
head cheerleader at the University of Texas.

Speaker 5 (05:35):
So back then, you.

Speaker 6 (05:37):
Know, the ladies weren't getting a lot of respect, and
so it was all male. Every industry was mailed down,
even including college cheerleading if you can imagine it, and
you know that's that's a long time, that's seventies years ago.

Speaker 5 (05:53):
But no, she was the first female head childer.

Speaker 6 (05:56):
My dad's dad is in the Hall of Honor at
University Texas as a baseball player in the mid twenties.

Speaker 5 (06:03):
So it's it was two and a half hours.

Speaker 6 (06:06):
From Huntsville, Texas, where I grew up, which is about
an hour north of Houston. And I grew up a longhorn, dude,
like that's where I always wanted to go. So I
tell people I probably followed my heart instead of my mind.

Speaker 5 (06:24):
Because I knew I was going to be a long horn.

Speaker 6 (06:26):
Even though they said, look, we're going to change the offense,
we're gonna make it all about you, we're gonna throw
the ball, well they didn't.

Speaker 5 (06:34):
They never changed the offense.

Speaker 6 (06:35):
They never moved the third string quarterback over to defense
like they were going to say. They recruited, and they recruited. Well,
but I think they already knew. Dude, I was locked,
you know, to go to Austin and so and it
didn't work out because you know, they said some things
that didn't happened or go away. I thought that they

(06:59):
said they will good and so, you know, I had
two recruiting visits. One was Austin, Texas, one was Provo, Utah.
And I don't know if you can get more extreme
as far as cultures between the two cities in America,
but uh, yeah, so I made the change in Uh.

(07:20):
Claud Bassett was recruited me when I was down in Texas,
and so I came up and did a visit. And
even though I went to Austin, you know, I came
to YU wanting to be like the next line of quarterback,
you right, And so if I had it all to

(07:42):
do over again, honestly, I probably would.

Speaker 5 (07:46):
Have gone to University of Alabama.

Speaker 6 (07:49):
Uh. The offense coordinator at the time was Homer Smith,
and he's an offensive guru and genius and in jeans
Stallings was the head coach. And I watched them play
the University of Miami in the Sugar Bowl, and that
would have been nineteen nineteen ninety or nineteen ninety one anyway,

(08:15):
and I was I mean, I really liked Alabama. Dude,
like offensive mine, like passing the ball center around the quarterback.
But again, Hart was Austin, and you know, I ended
up at BYU because I want to go to the league.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
But I'm gonna throw a curveball at you.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Homer ended up leaving Alabama after the eighty nine season.
He went to UCLA. You should have gone to UCLA, Yes,
you should have.

Speaker 5 (08:43):
And we played them and they worked us, dude, like
worked us.

Speaker 6 (08:50):
And I ended up being really good friends with Rob Walker,
which was one of their quarterbacks back in the early
nineties when I was at BYU and we.

Speaker 5 (08:59):
Still talk this day. But he's from Texas as well.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
But yeah, well we we're grateful Yu Cougar, Steve grateful you.
You know, you're still loyal, strong and true to the
Cougzi didn't head to Alabama or U c l A,
et cetera. Uh, but you know, you got injured early
on in the in your career and in that was
a that was an era right the in the in

(09:27):
the nineties early nineties. I mean that was a kind
of the tight dept meer, you know era. And then
he handed it off to, uh, you know, other quarterbacks.
And you know, I don't know your entire story and
how it all went down, and you know, why didn't
you become the star of of b YU Cougar and
end up in you know, as one of the greatest
pastors in BAU football history.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
But you know, there's there's plenty.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
Of quarterbacks that have come through the quarterback factory that
have not gotten their shot, even though they probably would
have been prolific pastors at other schools. Man, it's hard,
it's a hard position. You only want a quarterback at
a time, right.

Speaker 6 (10:02):
Well, absolutely, and you have here the present day. I
mean this is you know when I was in nineteen
ninety two. Well, so back then, and maybe we'll talk
about nil a little bit later, because.

Speaker 5 (10:18):
Man, if they had the nil back then, Holy.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
You would have got a lot of money there, Steve,
you wouldn't have to worry, you know anymore.

Speaker 5 (10:25):
Got to be retired right now, not even close anyway.
But you know John watsh was.

Speaker 6 (10:34):
It was John Walsh and I in nineteen ninety two,
and we battled back and forth in the spring and
and fall camp, and there was there was a definite controversy,
and he beat me out on the job and his
fair and square, and you know I backed him up.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
And I wouldn't say.

Speaker 6 (10:56):
We were suppressed a friend, right, I don't think we
were on each other's Christmas list. But but when you
go through that, I mean you learn quite a bit
of things. And one of the things you learned is
you can't get everything you want. A lot of times
you don't get half of what you want. But if

(11:18):
you full circle with basically three guys in the running,
usually the addage and really back then obviously.

Speaker 5 (11:27):
I was upset when they named John the starter and.

Speaker 6 (11:31):
I was the backup, because you know, you come out
of high school and you throw for a gazillion yards
and breakreakers and this and that, and you know, I
attempted I think it was over a thousand passes in
my career in Texas to like forty seven in four
years at BYU. And so at some point you go, Okay,

(11:53):
what's what's this really about? And that's another probably another time,
another story, the things that I learned as a backup.
But my point is, uh, it's it's very difficult, and
you really become you have to think of other things
that that kind of drive you and motivate you. Obviously

(12:18):
you want to be on the field. But again that's
there's one positions, not receivers, four different receivers. Uh, one
person per you know for a quarterback position obviously, and so.

Speaker 5 (12:31):
And now fast forward, I.

Speaker 6 (12:32):
See these three guys battling, and uh, they're all leaders,
and they're all they're all be able to athletically do it.
But what I used to think, both as a player
and as a coach a little bit later after I
graduated BOU was if the old adage was if you.

Speaker 5 (12:52):
Had more than one quarterback, you had zero. Right, if
you have two quarterbacks, you had zero. If you had
four quarterbacks you had zero.

Speaker 6 (12:58):
So in this case, you have three quarterbacks, and the
old adage that says you have zero, Well, I don't
think that's the case anymore, because if you look at it,
I think that's more of a class half empty. Look,
if you look at a glass half full, you go, Okay.
Let's say we start quarterback A and for some reason

(13:20):
he gets hurt or he can't do.

Speaker 5 (13:22):
It, or you stall out or whatever. Then I'm confident we're.

Speaker 6 (13:26):
Going with B because I didn't really know coming out
of my first maybe second week of fall camp who
the starter should be.

Speaker 5 (13:32):
There.

Speaker 6 (13:33):
Maybe there's been, you know, not a lot of separation.
I don't know if there has been. It doesn't seem
like there has been much separation between the three. So
it's it's more pro three guys rather than an anti otherwise,
you know, I don't know if I'm making any type

(13:53):
of sense right now.

Speaker 3 (13:54):
No.

Speaker 2 (13:54):
No, Yeah, you're taking ane and you're saying, hey, no,
there's there's some there there used to be.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
Yeah, this particular case, in this particular case. You've seen
these quarterbacks, you've seen them throw.

Speaker 2 (14:07):
What do you like about McKay Hillstate Tracing, Borgae Bear Bachmer?
What have you seen? What would you oppine about this
particular quarterback competition? Who do you like in the quarterback competition?

Speaker 7 (14:20):
Well?

Speaker 5 (14:20):
With Bear what stands out I think is I mean
you have to know that. I mean, my gosh, the.

Speaker 6 (14:28):
Guy makes thirty four on the act because calculator ran
out of batteries or whatever it was, or AESCU would
add a perfect score, you know. So, so it's obvious
that he's already picked up the offense in a short
amount of time, right, So now it goes okay athletically
and experience wise. Athletically, Yeah, he can throw the ball.

(14:49):
You look at his tree trunks for legs. He's going
to be able to run the ball and probably run
pretty victually. He reminds me more of like a Tim Tebow,
but as a better but but a better thrower.

Speaker 3 (15:02):
I guess, yeah, I like that a lot actually.

Speaker 6 (15:07):
And he just he just throws it from the wrong side,
which is the right side, because the left side is
the right side, you know what I mean. And so
and then you go to Hillstead and you go, okay, well,
physical physically, I know he's been here. I'll go back
to experience. As far as in the system, he knows
the system. He's been here for a while, right, so

(15:27):
he knows the playbook. He knows what a Rod's looking
to do and what's him to do, and so he's
familiar with the system in that regard. The guys know
on the team know who he is. He's been here
for a minute and so. And then physically, yeah, he's shorter,
but he can do some things with his feet.

Speaker 5 (15:48):
And I think his arm is underestimated because you look
at him and he's you know, he's shorter.

Speaker 6 (15:57):
Right, and so you know, I don't know if that
dude can look over the line. Well, I mean, if
we're we're doing what we're supposed to do up front,
then we're creating passing lanes, right, So I mean you
could be a hobbit and throw and passing lane. You
should be able to do, right because we're doing what
we're supposed to be doing upfront.

Speaker 5 (16:19):
No, no, no, no, I did not that.

Speaker 8 (16:21):
No. I just said, like Bilbo would be okay, you
could be no no, no, right.

Speaker 3 (16:33):
So.

Speaker 6 (16:35):
But like he's been he's but then experience wise, he's
played at Utah se right, so he has the experience
over somebody like a bear, right, and so then you
move to what I call and actually I met him
today for the first time is uh uh Trey. I
call him Bob Cluche because yeah, so so so to

(17:00):
so two springs ago.

Speaker 5 (17:02):
You know when when Jay and Gary jered no Gary,
when they were going at it, right, I'm like this,
there's this number sixteen, right, he's taking all the two's
and the trees reps.

Speaker 6 (17:17):
I'm like, who's this dude right here? And somebody says, well,
that's that's whatever.

Speaker 5 (17:23):
Boy. I couldn't I couldn't say his last name.

Speaker 6 (17:25):
I was like, like Bobby Bouche and so and so.
But he's got experience, right. He he went and played
and beat Michigan State at I was the Central Michigan
or Western Michigan. Wes your Michigan, thank you, and he
beats Michigan State and so he got some experience right

(17:47):
on the college level. So and then they and I
was talking during today and I told hehrm that He's like, oh,
that's pretty funny to you. I'm gonna have to keep
that nick name. And uh, he's a he's a really
neat kid. I have met the other two, so it's
it's kind of unfair. But I met Bobby today, but uh,

(18:11):
he's a he's a neat kid. We had similar stories.
Is that he is, uh, he's a Lutheran, he's non LDS. Well,
I came to buy u. Yeah, I'm a convert and
so I came to buy you as a non ld
S athlete and we kind of swapped stories.

Speaker 5 (18:27):
And he's interesting. But it's really good dude.

Speaker 6 (18:32):
I really like enjoyed talking to him this morning before practice.

Speaker 5 (18:36):
But uh, so we've got.

Speaker 6 (18:37):
The experience, he's got the tools physically, uh gifted arm strength.
I mean, none of them are gonna wow you with
their arm strength. But I don't necessarily think that a
Rod looks for Coach Mitchell looks for that would just
Cannon like are you a winner? Like can you can

(18:58):
we move the ball down the field, matriculate the ball
down the field and go score some points at least
put up you know, twenty one, twenty four to twenty
five points because their defense is gonna.

Speaker 5 (19:11):
Lock the dudes down on the other side of the ball.

Speaker 6 (19:13):
And we just gotta, you know, play some a little
bit of ball control and uh, and that's how we're.

Speaker 5 (19:23):
Gonna win games. And so.

Speaker 6 (19:27):
Again I go back to that, I don't know if
that completely is true. I think you can flip it
on upside down and go No, we got actually three
solid qbs that can come in and go win game,
not just manage games, but I really think go win
games and maybe do it a little bit differently. But

(19:49):
a Rod has been in the game enough and he's
calling enough plays and seeing enough defenses that he'll have something.
He'll be able to take the strengths of those three
kids and be able to implement that into his offense
and enhance the weaknesses that they may have for whatever reason,

(20:13):
whatever those weaknesses are, that each one of them, we
all have weaknesses. But no, I feel good. I feel
very confident that position in.

Speaker 3 (20:26):
You lean in one direction or the other.

Speaker 2 (20:27):
You think McKay's the guy, You think bear Bachmeyer could
overtake him.

Speaker 7 (20:35):
I don't.

Speaker 6 (20:36):
I don't know, because I'm just being a coach man.
There's no substitute for experience, you know. And so so
if that's the case, and if the world was according
to me, that leans towards.

Speaker 5 (20:54):
McKay and Bouge.

Speaker 6 (20:57):
So boys, I should say that the right way make
his his mom's gonna come after me, dude. So But
at the same time, you know Bear's Bear knows the system,
He's got the playbook down, He's been there a short time.

Speaker 5 (21:17):
Physically, he's got it. I don't know if I lean
the experience and then it's those other two. But you
can't just pigeonhole this position.

Speaker 6 (21:30):
You know, well, we're just gonna look at this. You
gotta look at all the variables everything there. What makes
him great or what's you know, what their weaknesses are,
and you know how they lead the team, what's what's
the temple like in the huddles? And that's some things
that we don't we're not gonna see on a Saturday.

(21:51):
But being assessed with a fine two comb by a
Rod and Maddie and and uh Colonnie.

Speaker 2 (21:59):
So what's your win lost prediction right now for the
regular season twelve games? I don't know if you've reviewed
the schedule. How do you feel about Bewie's chances right now?
With wins and their losses.

Speaker 5 (22:13):
I'm gonna go.

Speaker 6 (22:16):
At least eight and four for I think I can see,
we can see a nine and three, Okay, but I
don't predict.

Speaker 5 (22:24):
That's why I don't go to Vegas. Dude. I'm awful predicting.

Speaker 6 (22:28):
Like night collar basketball bracket like sucks after twelve o'clock
on the first day.

Speaker 5 (22:35):
Dude, I can't even get through a whole day.

Speaker 3 (22:38):
But that's basketball. We're talking football here, you know.

Speaker 5 (22:40):
Ball.

Speaker 6 (22:41):
Oh but for.

Speaker 2 (22:44):
The floor eight and floor eight and four? Is the
floor ten and two?

Speaker 3 (22:48):
The ceiling?

Speaker 9 (22:52):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (22:53):
Yeah, I'll do that. I'm down with that.

Speaker 6 (22:56):
See yeah, And I like a nine and three right
in there is is hot.

Speaker 3 (23:02):
I like that.

Speaker 2 (23:03):
Sure. Steve clements, ladies and gentlemen, one of four quarterbacks
to come in as a D one transfer and start
for the Cougars. He transferred Texas Max Hall transfer from
Arizona State. The winning his quarterback in BWIE football is
Sir Riley Nelson, Utah State transfer, and then Keaton Slova's
pit transfer. So those are the four D one quarterbacks

(23:23):
that are transferred from other schools.

Speaker 3 (23:25):
To BYU and played ball for us. So Steve, uh,
we'll catch up with again soon. We got to get
out on the golf course.

Speaker 2 (23:31):
In golf soon, love and appreciation s thanks for hopping
on with us for a keeping up with the cougar segment. Brother,
all right, see dude, all rightasure much love to Steve Clements.

Speaker 3 (24:26):
Go lord guys.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
Any thoughts, any comment before we wrap up that segment.
Brett always bring the hammer.

Speaker 7 (24:30):
I just love that he kept calling him Bobby Bouche.
I just I could not. We got Bobby every single time.
That was awesome. I couldn't even pay attention. I was like,
that is that's so great?

Speaker 2 (24:44):
My gem was actually the Tim Tebow cop. He's like,
he reminds me of better throwing Tim Tebow, and the
reason being is because of his his IQ is off
the charts. Tim is extremely intelligent. Thickness wise, density, athleticism.
Like the running style of Tim is probably gonna be
somewhat equivalent to bear Bachmeer's running style.

Speaker 3 (25:05):
Does that make sense? Big? Strong, fast enough, quick enough,
good footwork.

Speaker 2 (25:10):
He was looking at his legs he was down at
practice earlier today, he's looking at it like those are tree.

Speaker 3 (25:15):
Trunks, Yes, tree trunks.

Speaker 2 (25:17):
Well, big boned, Okay, big boned is what our guy
bear Bachmeyer is.

Speaker 3 (25:23):
Now.

Speaker 2 (25:23):
I will say this, Tim Tebow was a unique and
singular leader that inspired through UH through his own example
of hard work, weight room and being the first in,
last out and also being vocal. We'll see if Bear
can rise to that type of that type of standard.

Speaker 5 (25:41):
I wonder if we're gonna be under selling.

Speaker 7 (25:43):
I know we're talking about how smart bear Bachmeer is,
but I wonder if we are even under selling how
intelligent he is, especially when you look at like Stanford quarterbacks.
I mean, I was just watching Tanner McKee yesterday. He
was bawling out in his NFL preseason game. Obviously, you know,
and luck is like guys are also a savant. Guys
who go and play quarterback at Stanford, first of all,

(26:06):
are already geniuses, and clearly that genius helps on the field.
And then you add on top of it, not only
is Barrett genius, he's also athletically gifted. Maybe the most
athletically gifted at the quarterback position. We don't know, but
it's he has the book smarts and he has the
athleticism to go with it. I'm very curious just to

(26:30):
see how this guy's career plays out.

Speaker 2 (26:33):

Speaker 5 (28:10):
I love it.

Speaker 4 (28:11):
I'll take the I'll take the comparison of the Swiss
army knife.

Speaker 5 (28:14):
I love it.

Speaker 2 (28:15):
Let's go so Timmy first and foremost. It starcks on
BYU football for a moment. Who's your favorite to be
the starting quarterback? Is it McKay, Hillstead or bear Bachmart?
I think it's being whittled down to a two quarterback
race right now.

Speaker 4 (28:29):
Well, I mean, I've been saying it all year and
I'll keep staying about it.

Speaker 3 (28:32):
I think McKay's the guy.

Speaker 4 (28:34):
I mean, I certainly could be wrong, but I think
he's going to be the guy that he's gonna win it,
and I think he's gonna actually have a really good year.

Speaker 3 (28:42):
I would love to see it.

Speaker 2 (28:43):
A lot of the local high school football coaches love
McKay Hillstead. Brandon Doman's been on the show loves McKay Hillstead.
I've had, I think recently Steve Klements loves McKay Hillstead,
like pretty much every coach, oh.

Speaker 3 (29:02):
Think of, I'm trying to think of some other guy.

Speaker 2 (29:04):
But we've had two or three four guys hop on
that have coached locally and they all love McKay.

Speaker 3 (29:10):
Hill staid. What is it that McKay does that's so unique?

Speaker 4 (29:14):
I think, And that's where I'm coming from, right from
the high school coach and watching him.

Speaker 5 (29:20):
I think, look at three year starter at one of.

Speaker 4 (29:22):
The top programs in the state means something. I mean,
he was extremely good as a sophomore, right and maybe
I can play now the knock on him as he's
five to ten or whatever he really is.

Speaker 3 (29:35):
Who knows what his real height is, but that's the knock.

Speaker 5 (29:39):
But I don't know if it's that critical.

Speaker 4 (29:40):
I mean, look at Drew Brees Hall of Fame quarterback,
I really matter you can overcome it, and I think
he will. The other thing I think McKay does is
I don't think he's going to make a lot of mistakes.
You look at historically what he does. He's a good quarterback,
but he's consistent. I don't think he's going to be
that special guy. He's not gonna, you know, throw for

(30:02):
four thousand yards in the season. But I think he's
gonna do just enough and not make your mistakes and
how's the game.

Speaker 3 (30:07):
He's a winner.

Speaker 4 (30:08):
I mean, he's been a winner his whole life.

Speaker 3 (30:10):
Love that.

Speaker 2 (30:10):
Let's move over to the BYU Cougar football team as
a whole. ESPN came out with their their rankings and
they ultimately did it by tiers and BYU out of
the twenty tiers comes in at Tier eight and it's
entitled regression to the mean, the bad kind.

Speaker 3 (30:29):
They say there are five.

Speaker 2 (30:31):
Teams BYU, Duke, Miszoo, Syracuse, Vanderbilt.

Speaker 3 (30:34):
They said this about him.

Speaker 2 (30:35):
This group of teams won thirty two games against powerful
opponents last season. Twenty four of those wins, seventy five
percent came by one touchdown or less one score games.
Missouri Duke each won four games in which they trailed
on the fourth quarter. BYU and Syracuse each were tired
or trailing in the fourth quarter seven times.

Speaker 3 (30:53):
Each went six and one.

Speaker 2 (30:56):
So that's kind of their take on BYU too many
one score game games. They feel like regression to the
mean is going to occur here. Do you agree or
disagree with that assessment.

Speaker 4 (31:08):
I think it's a fair assessment on paper, I would
agree one hundred percent. I think the other side and
maybe the flip side to look at it is they
just do what it takes to win. You know, numbers
are numbers, and statistics are there, and look, you're going

(31:29):
to have those close games and it's gonna buite you.
I think Kansas was that example for us last year.
You know, we just too many close games and you're
going to lose one. But there's something to be said
about again, just like I said with mckaydau was a
winner last year.

Speaker 5 (31:44):
They just expected to win.

Speaker 3 (31:47):
You know.

Speaker 4 (31:47):
And I think what they did against Colorado and the
Bowl game is a great example of that. I mean, everybody,
everybody had Colorado not only winning but winning big, and
obviously it was the other way around. So I think
when a team believes in themselves and thats who they are,
they're going to win those close games. And in that regard,
I put my money on BYU all day long.

Speaker 2 (32:05):
College football begins and college football hype begins with their
recruiting rankings, and there's some momentum as well in the
recruiting game that is maybe leading to a little bit
of hype leading into the twenty twenty five season for
BAU despite the Jake Retz left news and the questions
surrounding the quarterback BYU per ESPN okay, they ranked out

(32:26):
the top forty in recruiting for the twenty twenty six
class and BAU comes in at number nineteen per ESPN
dot com. They got three top three hundred commits. Their
top offensive prospect is tight end Brockcarris, top defensive product
is DN Braxton Lindsey, and they state this about the

(32:49):
twenty twenty six lass as the potential to be the
pro A program defining class as by you build on
the momentum of last year's eleven win season, which saw
the Kog Climate side is number six in the college
football rankings. The Cougars currently hold commitments from two top
one hundred ESPN standouts. Obviously, Writer Lions as a headliner

(33:10):
as well. Some people would say that he's the top
offensive product or a prospect in this class.

Speaker 5 (33:16):
Harris is definitely up there. As well. Bot Mulatalo is
a part of it.

Speaker 2 (33:21):
You see the momentum in the recruiting ranks, and it's
not a surprise that BYU fans are as optimistic as
they've ever been about this program. Where do you stand
in your level of optimism in the future. Being a
part of a P four structure and having recruiting rankings
and classes such.

Speaker 4 (33:39):
As this, well, a couple of things come to mind.
Number One, I think in the state Utah give HM's
credit where credits do has owned the recruiting for the
last several years, you know, out of state in state,
they've just had a higher recruiting class. Think we've seen

(34:00):
that really flop in the last two years. BYU clearly
is getting the edge. Now again, his rankings really a
matter of these kids. As a kid really a three star,
four star, five star, who knows, but that BYU is
getting that edge, which is really, you know, a good thing.

Speaker 3 (34:17):
The other thing is I think that.

Speaker 4 (34:22):
When you have money, you can get kids. And however
it's working out, basketball, football, BYU is getting money. The
collective is earning it.

Speaker 5 (34:33):
We've got big.

Speaker 4 (34:33):
Earners members the church whatever it is, that are donating
and that is that matters? Now, are you ever going
to compete with Alabama? Are you ever going to compete
with the big SEC schools Ohio state that some of
the big ten schools. No, but if you can be
in that conversation and you start putting some money in it,

(34:54):
you're going to get.

Speaker 3 (34:55):
Kids, no doubt about it.

Speaker 2 (34:58):
Uh, Timmy, let's transition to RGS Exteriors. Tell us a
little bit about your business, what you do, how you
do it, and why our listeners should get a hold
of you for all your products and services.

Speaker 4 (35:09):
Look like we've been saying, I think for for quite
some time, as we've been doing this for five generations.
Our whole our whole goal is that let us just
show you who we are.

Speaker 9 (35:19):
You know, there's a reason why we've won twenty one
Best of State awards, why we have almost one hundred
five Google reviews. You know, it didn't happen by accident.
We get them and uh, you know that's that's that's
our goal. And I said, take care of these customers,
and then we just want to earn your business. I
think really the thing that sets us apart from everybody.

Speaker 4 (35:38):
Else is really the process from the day you make
a phone call to get an estimate until the job
is done and you hand us the final check. It's
the process, and it's not just about how amazing your
project looks. It's not just about the quality that goes
into it, which you know, we're seconds not on all those.
But I think what really matters is the process and

(35:59):
how it's done, because it's a very intimidating process, and
it can be scary and it can be hard, but
we walk the homeowners all the way through that process.

Speaker 2 (36:09):
Love that breakdown, guys, give them a call, set up
an appointment today. Eight oh one nine ninety seven sixty
six one six. That's eight A one nine ninety seven

serving Utah for over five generations and counting. Timmy, I
always appreciate our time. Thanks for talking some college football

(36:32):
with me here today on Cougar Sports.

Speaker 5 (36:36):
Hey, we love it.

Speaker 3 (36:37):
We appreciate it, you know.

Speaker 4 (36:38):
And for us today intersquad scrimmages for high school next week,
high school games a week from a day officially start.

Speaker 5 (36:44):
So look, man, I love it.

Speaker 3 (36:46):
We're in let's go and remind everyone we're you're coaching
real quick.

Speaker 4 (36:50):
Yeah, so something academy, a little little two a school
for football, but pretty good little school. And we're just
excited right at the point of the mountain, and let's
go Bears.

Speaker 2 (36:58):
You guys, have any knee kids, You guys got your
your roster already filled. Have any needs at cornerback or
wide receiver at all this season?

Speaker 4 (37:07):
Hey, we'll always take kids, right, we can always find
room for anybody.

Speaker 3 (37:11):
You may have a late addition for you, possibly, we'll
let you know. Let's go.

Speaker 2 (37:16):
All right, Thanks Timmy, chat with you soon. Thanks so much,
bother all right, any takeaways? Brett always bringing the hammer.
I gave you a few interesting stats in relation to
BYU and college football as far as rankings and tiers,
not only in recruiting but also in preseason ESPN dot

(37:37):
Com insider information. Anything that stood out to you there, Brett,
I feel like, Look, I'm happy for Vanderbilt.

Speaker 7 (37:45):
They've done a lot of great things. They beat Alabama
last year. Again, I've been watching the SEC docs heres
on Netflix.

Speaker 3 (37:52):
I'm happy for Vanderbilt.

Speaker 7 (37:54):
However, I don't think that Vanderbilt is qualified, nor do
I think I think Duke is qualified to be in
the same breath as BYU.

Speaker 5 (38:05):
It feels a little disrespectful.

Speaker 7 (38:07):
And I know the adage is BYU plays better when
they're disrespected because they love the bulletim wore material. I'm
here for that, and it's about content. It's about getting
people riled up. And ESPN has me all riled up
for this take putting BYU in a class with Duke
and with Vanderbilting. These other schools love that. But but sorry,

(38:30):
I just we talked. We talked about this already. We
talked about BYU coming onto the scene, and then the
national media pushed them off the scene once they lost
the Kansas c inanders to stay again, and then they
came back on the scene again twice in the same season.
And you're gonna to And it's not like they had
one flashy heisman guy who never came to BOU. Like
they built it on defense and special teams, things that

(38:52):
are sustainable. So it's just kind of crazy to me
that BOU has now been kicked to the curve. Hey,
it was nice to see what you did last year.
You won't do it again, so we're gonna put you
in a tier with Duke and Vanderbilt. Okay, got it,
We'll see you. We'll see you. You know, I don't worry.
We'll be seeing you. I will say this much.

Speaker 5 (39:10):
Now.

Speaker 2 (39:10):
I have brought up this concern myself, and this is
before the ESPN article dropped. Ronald can attest to it.
I have discussed the one score games. It's true that
BYU has experienced during their Big twelve schedules. Right this
new landscape, it's a little bit more difficult to navigate.

(39:32):
We're experiencing that that oblong shape ball bounces certain ways sometimes.
And year one in two thousand and twenty three, the
ball did not bounce Buy's.

Speaker 5 (39:43):
Way like never. It didn't want some at all.

Speaker 2 (39:46):
It just never seemed like it bounced Buy's way in
these one score games, especially on the back end right
Oklahoma Oklahoma State Top twenty five teams.

Speaker 3 (39:57):
Twenty twenty four.

Speaker 2 (39:58):
It did, Let's be honest, for the most part until
pooch punts from Jalen Daniels and and I guess goal
line fades right that one hurt shot through the hardest brantasy.
Gurney likes to say, huge fan of Bon John, but
John bon Jovi can't even say it right anyway. The
one score games are concerning to me is that a

(40:22):
sustainable model of winning well, when you're winning through elite
to great defense and elite to great special teams. You
can make an argument for it is Will Farron just
the greatest kicker to ever come through BYU and he's
going to continue to just hit you know, just hit
it right through the uprights. We thought that about Jake Oldroyd.
I'm not trying to curse anybody, but we thought.

Speaker 3 (40:42):
That about Jack the mare right. We thought it was
just not.

Speaker 2 (40:47):
And Jake struggled a little bit, even though he's the
all time leading scorer in BAU football history. Jake Oldrady
is one of the great kickers in BAU football history.

Speaker 3 (40:55):
Just don't get it twisted.

Speaker 5 (40:56):
He is.

Speaker 2 (40:57):
He hit a lot of game winners, hit a lot
of great really good punter as well.

Speaker 3 (41:04):
Do we think that the pump.

Speaker 2 (41:06):
Returning kick return game to the house is sustainable? That's
a tough one. Those are game changing moments.

Speaker 10 (41:14):
Well here's why, Ben, What did I tell you? They
didn't vote Parker and Keelan and those things. They voted
Will right, because you gotta respect field goal kicking. What
did I tell you? They can say whatever they want,
but what will always tell you, Brett, what is the
coach gonna do what he I'm gonna go off what
he does.

Speaker 5 (41:30):
They're not going to kick to Parker. You're just not.

Speaker 10 (41:34):
There be times when he will be at a return punts.
I don't want to make it seem like he won't.
But when you're the best punk return in the nation
and you got guys that can return kicks for kickoff, Ben,
don't sit here and tell me like, yeah, they're gonna
kick the ball right to him.

Speaker 5 (41:46):
So, yeah, you're right, it's not gonna be sustainable.

Speaker 10 (41:48):
You know why if I'm a special teams court and
if I if I were to ask Kelly Papinka, if
he were the opposition to what he kicked to Parker Kingston,
he would tell me absolutely not what you say tell me,
So I would have to think that other special team
coordinators would think the same thing. So you're right, And
the landscape with the ball bounce your away. It might
even bounce away because they might just kick the ball

(42:09):
at the mountains, So you're right.

Speaker 5 (42:10):
You might not be at a.

Speaker 10 (42:11):
Liboff that because you're not gonna get maybe as many opportunities.
So I do agree with your point because of that,
you could live off special teams. But what's the likelihood
that that hunter is gonna kick it directly to you
to return it.

Speaker 7 (42:22):
I will say to Ben's point, if I have to
be in one score games eternally, I'd rather go in
with a great defense than a great offense, because great
offense means you have to have the ball last and
you can't control that. But if I have the defense
that that's fine. We'll give you the ball. You put
your offense out there, you try and score on our defense.
I would rather go defense than offense if I have

(42:44):
to play that many one score games.

Speaker 3 (42:47):
Guys, Uh, whether it's.

Speaker 2 (42:49):
Sustainable or not, you know what is sustainable? Head on
over to Paskin Robbins. That's sustainable. You can eat ice forever.

You're a creature of habit. I like to just try
anything and everything. Give me the sampler. Give me the sampler, baby.

Speaker 7 (43:34):
I will say when it comes to ice cream, though, Look,
there's not a lot of bad ice creams in the world.

Speaker 5 (43:39):
I'm a man of habit on a lot of things.
Ice Cream is probably.

(46:41):
Yesterday we got to see number seventy three Blake Freeland
ball out for the Indianapolis Colts versus the Baltimore Ravens.
Who's on the NFL network? Were you able to did
we able to watch that game?

Speaker 3 (46:54):
By chance? Ronnie?

Speaker 5 (46:55):
I was able to catch one. I can tell you
one I did catch?

Speaker 3 (46:57):
Which one? Did you catch?

Speaker 10 (46:59):
I catch the prime? I'm telling you know, I should
have cut it up. This is bad producing on my part.

Speaker 5 (47:03):
A little Rico suave.

Speaker 10 (47:05):
I got to see the boot one of the you know,
great and greatest punters in BYU history. That's up there,
Ryan Rico been two punts in a preseason game. Inside
the twenty five punts you had total. I think that
the total what was two hundred and twenty five yards
somewhere around there.

Speaker 5 (47:21):
So that's what give the.

Speaker 10 (47:22):
Math about what forty four forty five yards per punt?
So I got to see that game with the Bengals.
He looked good out there. He looked good. Good, look
like a second year punter very smooth Umben and not
just him. Got a chance to even see our guy
Big Tree as they call him. Tree was also out there.

(47:43):
ETN got a chance to see him at one of
the tackle positions. So got to see two former Cougars
playing in that Cincinnati Bengals Philadelphia Eagles game.

Speaker 2 (47:51):
The Bengals ended up losing that game thirty four to
twenty seven, but it's the preseason after all. In that
Colts game, you saw significant pt from Blake Freeland at
the left tackle position, blocking well for the former Notre
Dame quarterback Riley Leonard, but the Colts ended up falling
to the Baltimore Ravens twenty four sixteen. Tonight, you got

(48:14):
the Cleveland Browns at the Carolina Panthers. You're gonna want
to watch Brady Christiansen. He's been a guard, he's been
a center, he was a tackle at BYU. You may
see him at center at least shortly on in that game.

Speaker 3 (48:28):
Check him out. Brady Christensen.

Speaker 2 (48:30):
His pro day was one of the best pro days
I've ever watched from an offensive lineman.

Speaker 3 (48:35):
Can't like go.

Speaker 2 (48:36):
I think it was had like a ten foot broad
jump at that height and weight. You know, six five
sixty six over three hundred pounds looked really good.

Speaker 3 (48:46):
Brady Christiansen shout out to him.

Speaker 2 (48:48):
Washington Commander's taking on the New England Patriots. Watch out
for Kiris Tonga along that defensive line. Love Kiris, big
man in the middle, two gap in in the middle.

Speaker 3 (49:02):
Rudon Kiris as well.

Speaker 2 (49:03):
Saturday, though, Houston Texans Keten Slovas taking on the Minnesota
Vikings Tyler Battian's a two pm Mountain Time kickoff on
the NFL Network. A lot of people doubted Keten. They said, Ben,
you don't know ball, you don't know talent. I kept
on telling you, guys, Keten Slovas is an NFL talent
and he's gonna make an NFL roster. Every time I

(49:26):
make a prognostication about NFL talent, I have Utah fans
sliding it into my DM sliding into my mansion tell
me how I'm wrong and at that and every.

Speaker 3 (49:35):
Single time they've been wrong. Gosh, it feels good to
be right. I'm right again. Keiden Slovis with the Houston Texans.

Speaker 2 (49:43):
Now people say, well, Ben doesn't mean he's gonna be
on the fifty three.

Speaker 3 (49:47):
Man. I'm like bro He's been with the Texans for
the last year. De Russ.

Speaker 2 (49:51):
How tough it is to make a roster, to be
on a practice squad in the National Football League, Sin
sane man look at the numbers an improbability. Most of
us don't get to see the light of day in
the not for long lead. Keaton Slovas has been there
for a year, so yes, he is an NFL talent.
Minnesota Vikings Tyler Batty can't wait to see what he
can do. He's had a good camp thus far, and

(50:14):
he's gonna make some hay in the league. Pittsburgh Staeler's
gonna be taken on the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Speaker 3 (50:19):
Watch out for Darius Lassiter.

Speaker 2 (50:22):
Ladies and gentlemen, one of Ronald's favorite players to watch.
You always gotta keep the Brethren tight, right they keep that.
You know, there's there's not many of them in Provo Rodney,
so you gotta you gonna keep track of your brother.

Speaker 10 (50:33):
He's in good spirits from the last time I checked
up on him, so he's doing really well right now.
Happy for him. I think that's another guy you're gonna
see for a long time.

Speaker 5 (50:41):
Been play.

Speaker 10 (50:42):
Keaton going on here two with the Houston Texans. As
you mentioned little cougar and cougar action. Maybe TV Tyler
Baddy gets to Keaton Slovas. We'll see what happens. But
I'm excited to see Darius Asia, but not as excited
for this next game that you're about to mention. Two
guys that have got a lot of PT ben I
for like over the last couple of years New York.

Speaker 2 (51:00):
That's a team that BYU fans would call a hiss
and a byword at the Green Bay Packers. We like
the Green Bay Packers a whole lot more. Zane Anderson
and Chris Brooks a part of that Green Bay Packers squad.
Zane Trey and Anderson one of my favorites out of
Stansbury Park in the Tuila area, came to Brigham, played safety,

(51:22):
played linebacker, played safety again, bawled out at Brigham had
some injury issues. He's still in the league on his
second contract. That was one of the other guys that
YOUTHAH fans got wrong. I said, Zane Anderson's gonna have
a longer career than Chase Hanson.

Speaker 3 (51:36):
I'm telling you.

Speaker 2 (51:37):
In the NFL, they're like Zane's not even gonna make
the NFL. I'm like, bro, he's there and he's still
cashing paychecks. He's balling out. Chris Brooks at running back.
He's done well for the Miami Dolphins. Now he's with
the Green Bay Packers. Can't wait to see what Chris
Brooks can do with the Green Bay Packers Tomorrow, six
pm Mountain Time on the NFL.

Speaker 3 (51:55):
Network, Kent City Chiefs.

Speaker 2 (51:56):
Obviously Kingsley swam at the end at the tackle position
taken on the Arizona card.

Speaker 5 (52:00):
He's going to be a guard. I think, oh, that's right.

Speaker 10 (52:02):
I think them moving him inside the guard and they
got I think, Josh Simmons, I think that's what they're doing.

Speaker 3 (52:06):
I think you're right. I am incorrect. I was erroneous.

Speaker 2 (52:08):
He's gonna be moving inside to the guard position, which
is probably a good thing. Yeah, he's got the footwork
for a tackle, he's got the height and maybe length
for a guard. We'll see how plays out for him
at the guard position. Denver Broncos at services for forty
nine ers. Jacob Robinson with the Niners. Let's go, Jay
Robb gonna make that fifty three man roster. We did
have a insider for the forty nine ers hop on

(52:30):
with his representing Sports Illustrated, and he chatted with the
defensive staff and the cornerbacks coach and if things are
looking well, things.

Speaker 3 (52:38):
Are looking good for Jaco Robs.

Speaker 2 (52:40):
There's some injuries, yeah, currently on the roster, giving him
an opportunity to showcase his abilities. Jacob Robinson may be
a part of that fifty three man as a rotational
corner for the Niners.

Speaker 10 (52:49):
Niner gag. Let's ride bang bang Niner gag. Yeah, Ben,
that's isn't it how it goes? He says, especially when
at the highest level, next man up, they don't have
a lot of depth at that nickel position from what
the insider told us. So when you're getting one in
two reps, we'll see him, you know, on Saturday. You
gotta go on it. If he goes out there and
earns it, Ben, I think this, this is the opportunity
I would love to see.

Speaker 5 (53:07):
I would love to see Jay rob prove everybody.

Speaker 10 (53:09):
Wrong with size and everything, because we're hearing that now
even in down in byu Land, about a guy that
has size and he might not be big. It's not
about the size of the dog in the fight. It's
about the size of the fight and the dog.

Speaker 2 (53:21):
Sunday, Miami Dolphins in the fighting. Zach Wilson's at Chicago.
Oh boy, shottown Baby eleven a amount time on the
NFL network like this. We'll see some Zach attack, won't
we Yes, we will.

Speaker 10 (53:35):
He's been beat up on my Bears. Yeah, that's exactly
what's gonna happen.

Speaker 3 (53:38):
What's going on with the Bears right now?

Speaker 10 (53:39):
I don't know, man, I can't tell you if I
if I would have, if I knew, I would say it.

Speaker 5 (53:43):
It's just Zach about throw for a lot of touchdowns.

Speaker 3 (53:45):
That's all I know.

Speaker 2 (53:46):
Now, this may be controversial if I was in Chicago,
but since I'm on a Utah radio station, I think
that is primarily BYU fans. Let me tell you one
rule that you should always a by when you're drafting
a quarterback. Never draft a quarterback that paints his nails.

(54:08):
And I'm telling you, like, don't do it. Bad decision.

Speaker 5 (54:13):
Let's just say not focused on all things football. That's
what I would go with.

Speaker 2 (54:16):
No, if he is concerned about the colors of his
nails and he's painting them weekly, a different color. Do
not draft him. I don't care how talented he is.
I don't care what he produced at the collegiate level.
Don't draft him because you ain't gonna change that.

Speaker 5 (54:37):
Man. Please help us Ben Johnson the Cello say.

Speaker 3 (54:40):
You're not gonna change him. You're not gonna change him.

Speaker 5 (54:43):
If Ben Johnson can do it and all help his
lost Cellar team, No, man, don't, don't.

Speaker 2 (54:47):
Don't draft painted nails quarterbacks. You know where they got
it right was when they drafted a by U quarterback that,
you know, maybe circumvented the honor code a little bit
with his partying ways, carry around, you know, some some
coolers of cores light, which was Jim McMahon, because he's
got a little balance, right, He's got craziness, but he

(55:08):
had also had the balance and infrastructure and honor code
that was trying to keep him on the straight and narrow.
He had like in his mind he wanted to go
to UNLV and party, but his dad said, no, you
got to go to Brigham because it's not it's a
big it's a bigger school and they're gonna highlight you
like that, that's a guy that you want to draft.
You want to graftor Jim McMahon that has a little
bit of jeckle and hide to him. You don't want

(55:31):
Julian Hyde, you know what I mean? You don't want that.

Speaker 5 (55:35):
I could only have Max Hall as my quarterback.

Speaker 3 (55:37):
You know when that was you growing up.

Speaker 2 (55:39):
