Speaker 3 (02:58):
Uh. How's everything, man, how's the family?
Speaker 5 (03:02):
Oh my gosh, everyone's doing great. In fact, we just
had our second grandchild, so.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
Isaac, who seems like yesterday he was playing at BYU.
Speaker 5 (03:12):
Just had his.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
Second baby, girl named Eliza, so we were visiting him. Amy,
my wife and I were babysitting his oldest Luca. By
the way, having kids been, as you know, is a
young man's game.
Speaker 5 (03:26):
I've been out of.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
Practice for a little bit, but yeah, that is a
young man's game. Luca wore Amy and I out for
the last couple of days. But yeah, so new addition
to the Rex family. Everyone's doing great. First girl, his wife,
my daughter in law, Lexi is one of four and
she has three brothers and then we only have three boys.
Speaker 5 (03:46):
So I got to be a little delicate with the girls,
but great to hold her and her being born into
our family. So lots of blessing has been lots of blessings.
I love it.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
You're a blessed man and and a Brigham baller, and
so you got everything handled even.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
In your older age. Now you know you were a.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Little bit taxed, a little bit fatigued after taking care
of your grandkids, but you still got it in. You
still got some vigor and vim to you.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
I know you do.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
You played in twenty four games as a BA you
cougar eighty six receptions, and twenty three yards fourteen zero
point two yards per perception, seven touchdowns. You were all
round tight end, you were blocking tight end, a flex
tight end, you were you were with the total package,
Isaac Rex per Aaron Roderick, your son was the last
(04:32):
tight end to be that total package. He did say
now that Carson Ryan is the total package as well.
And you know what, like watching Carson, he kind of
reminds me a little bit of Byron Rex height weight,
his ability to be in line B flex.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
You may have a little bit of.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
More boot scoot and boogie, if you know what I mean.
I'll give you a little more credit there. But he
kind of reminds me a little bit about the you know,
the the number ninety five Byron Rex back in the
eighties early nineties.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
Well, I hate to diminish the stock so much as
to come down to where I reside.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
Come on, come.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
On, I know that, you know what I've been impressed with.
I think we always knew he was, you know, at
the point of attack, like he blocks the point of
attack really well yep. And I think he has the
ability to take on a defensive end, which Isaac and
I always sort of worked on right, that was the goal.
(05:32):
Can you be that guy to move the edge, so
to say, at the point of attack. I've seen him
do that. I think where I've been pleasantly surprised is
I didn't know he was that nifty out in space,
especially in one on one situation. I thought, I have
to bring down a strong safety. You know, it might
(05:52):
be one of those things where contested catches sort of
all over the place, but I've seen separation and you know,
I've only been to a few practices, but not only
in practice, but you know, in the game, and that
critical third.
Speaker 5 (06:04):
Down catch that he had, I think it was like, yeah, last.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
Week, that's big time, Like like Aaron doesn't call your
number unless he has confidence that you can be the
one on one matchup. So I thought that was one
of many to come probably where Carson can be that
third down guy along with Chase or Parker any of
the other guys that we have on the field. So
just an added weapon that Bear has in his arsenal.
(06:29):
But I've been impressed again he has a little more
wiggle out in space than I thought that he might
based on what I'd seen before at Utah and UCLA.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
I just love seeing you know, the total package out there,
someone that can can do it all.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
It helps as a play caller, it helps you know everyone.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Involved in that offense because you want multiple targets, you
want multiple playmakers, and I think Carson can do that
for this Cougar football team in twenty twenty five, What
do you make of the offense thus far?
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Two games in? What do you know? What would you
like to see going forward?
Speaker 5 (07:07):
I think they've kept it really vanilla.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
I don't think we've shown really anything we haven't needed to,
which I can one hundred percent appreciate. So I'm looking
forward to it opening up, you know, taking what's given
to us. But I think that's probably the biggest thing
at this point is we've shown nothing, and so you're
gonna you're gonna have to figure out what we're gonna
(07:29):
do against what you're gonna show us. I think we'll
open it up more against East Carolina, obviously, I think
we'll have to. I think team speed, based on what
I've seen on film with those guys, is something that.
Speaker 5 (07:41):
We'll have to kind of figure out.
Speaker 4 (07:43):
And I have every faith in Aaron that he knows
exactly what he wants to do against that defense, So
I think that's number one. I think number two. Easing
Bear into you know, no these no pressure games that
he's had has been great. And then of course eld
and have been awesome the first two games along with
(08:04):
offensive line.
Speaker 5 (08:05):
Let's I mean, that's a whole you know, team effort.
Speaker 4 (08:08):
But if if we could keep that going, it just
sets up everything else.
Speaker 5 (08:13):
So I'm looking forward.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
To the next test, you know, not this week, but
the next and seeing if we can continue to run
the ball, which I believe we can, to set up
everything to keep easing Bear into what's going to be
a difficult kind of middle four, middle five games there
of the season where it's you know, it's gonna get tough.
We we got to get some of those close games
(08:35):
and hopefully Bear step up to the occasion, which I
know I know he will, and I know aeron' said
him up for success as well.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
What do you like about Bear's game thus far that
you've seen him practice sending games?
Speaker 4 (08:48):
Yeah, well, people forget so San Clementy and Myriad, a
valley effect, Preston, Bear and Tiger and I were, you know,
dinner last week or something.
Speaker 5 (08:58):
We're in the cafeteria seven are at the Legends Grill.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
Having some food, and we were reminiscent we've seen from
Hank and Bear and Tiger. We've seen We've played these boys.
Isaac and Preston have played these guys and Xander.
Speaker 5 (09:10):
Actually I've played these guys for the last several years.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
So as long as i've been coaching in San Clemente,
we've had Mariada Valley on our schedule.
Speaker 5 (09:18):
So I've known and watched Bear essentially grow up.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
He's thrown with John tagging along with Hank back in
the day when Isaac and Hank threw together down here.
So I think he's I mean, obviously it's the decision making,
the processing of the information and then you know, getting
the ball to the right people will be I think
his job this year, but there's gonna be a time
(09:44):
where he's gonna win games, you know, sort of like
other great quarterbacks.
Speaker 5 (09:48):
At B what you have done right.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
And we could go on forever on those guys. So
I've loved Hank's game. O excuse me, Hank. I'm gonna
call him Hank because I've loved Bear his game ever since.
You know, I've seen him in eighth grade. So and
He's only going to get better. In Aaron's offense. You
know Festi as the passing coordinator, and then you know
Harf coaching the running backs. As long as he has
(10:13):
lj Andon and the rest of the running backs to
kind of ease him into it, along with the offensive line,
He's only going to get better. And yeah, there'll be
a few games this year. I'm sure he'll make the
mistake or two, you know, hopefully not throw it to
the wrong team. We've cut down or minimize the turnovers,
but there'll be a few decisions.
Speaker 5 (10:32):
There's a few already that I'm like.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
Oh, you know, he might have made it, you know,
a better decision, you know already, but they're not none
of our cauchstraphic So I just like that he avoids
the major mistakes.
Speaker 5 (10:46):
He obviously protects the.
Speaker 4 (10:47):
Ball, which Aaron want wants, and then his decision making
and processing is really way above his his years and
his pay grade and worries that.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
Now love that perspective.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
Buying rex Former by he tied in talking some Brigham
football here on ESPN the Fan, brought to you by
Odion Men'swear odeon menswear dot Com. Bench Press like Byron
Rex does with your elevate suit on, you can rep
out two or three more to twenty five reps under
that straight bar when you're in that elevate suit. We're
(11:19):
gonna prove it in the weeks to come. Now, Byron,
this uh this schedule right? The next four games? Which
game is most concerning to you? And you can't say
the next one unless you really believe it.
Speaker 5 (11:33):
I won't.
Speaker 4 (11:34):
Yeah, no, I think, well, I mean just okay, so
I don't get too far ahead of myself. So you
know that they're still the coaching athlete in.
Speaker 5 (11:44):
All of us, right.
Speaker 4 (11:46):
I do think East Carolina will be our biggest tests.
I think the team speed that they have will challenge us,
like the first two weeks have not. Okay, So there's that,
and then we're.
Speaker 5 (11:59):
Uh see you I think is next after that? Then
I don't have a schedule in front of me, but
so East Carolina.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
So you got the bye week East Carolina on the road, okay,
and then you have Colorado on the road, you have
West Virginia at home, and then twoson you of A
on the road.
Speaker 5 (12:15):
Okay. I got my West Virginia and TCU mixed up.
Speaker 4 (12:20):
Okay, I'm I've watched limited stuff on Colorado. Again, not
getting too far ahead of myself, but I think we
handle business. Maybe it's biased because of what happened in
the Bowl game last year. I just you know, I
think we should handle that, even though it's on the road.
Speaker 5 (12:38):
But I would say East Carolina is one I am.
I think this is the true test.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
We haven't been tested like we we we have so
far with them. We're traveling, you know, time zones, two
time zones going east right, hostile environment, bear on the road,
what we don't know, what we don't another test. So
I would say going forward, those are the one. I
(13:05):
think West Virginia coming to I would normally be if
we were going to West Virginia, i'd have the same
sort of argument.
Speaker 5 (13:10):
I think them coming to Provo.
Speaker 4 (13:12):
And I'm pretty sure that's a Friday night if I remember,
We're just we're so good in that time zone and
so good in that slot, you know, late night, and
the play.
Speaker 5 (13:23):
You know, the fans are amazing, ghost bonkers.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
So I just think we picked up seven to ten
points on that game just right there. So I would
say that East Carolina for me, over the next three
games is the one I am most and not just
because it's the next one, because I think they actually,
you know, give us the biggest test. I think we
handle our business obviously, but that's the one I'm I'm
(13:47):
thinking about the most.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
Right now, give me your thoughts on who stood out
to you throughout the season and maybe even fall camp. Offensively, defensively,
who could you highlight that shoot out to you when
you've watched film?
Speaker 5 (14:06):
Yeah, for for our team, you mean for by Yeah,
for for us.
Speaker 4 (14:14):
Gosh, it's gonna be hard to pick someone on the defense.
Speaker 5 (14:20):
They just they're so in sync. I don't know.
Speaker 4 (14:23):
I mean Shawn's boy, right, Keanu Tonavasa.
Speaker 5 (14:27):
We know Keanu since he's been a kid. He played
at Mission Bahi, so we played him since high school.
Speaker 4 (14:31):
But he's just you know, I just love his energy
and I think as a leader.
Speaker 5 (14:36):
So it's as much on the field as.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
Off the field. For Keanu. Shawn has done a great job.
Here's the chaplain by the way of the team, who knew.
But Shawn's awesome, great family. So I would say Keanu
probably defensively, although you know our linebacking corps, like Kelly
just moves.
Speaker 5 (14:56):
Like that's sack. He had that strip sack was like
off the edge. I'm like, yeah, I knew it in him,
but he just didn't.
Speaker 4 (15:02):
I didn't feel like he was there enough last year
where all of a sudden, you know, Coach Hill puts him,
Jay puts him in that position.
Speaker 5 (15:09):
That was awesome.
Speaker 4 (15:10):
And then offensively, I'll just stick with LJ just because
and the offensive line jelling. I think the offensive lines,
by the way, they just scratched the surface. I think
there's an upside still to go. And Todd's boy gentry is, uh, yeah,
he'll be special right and the left side, so yeah,
(15:31):
he's like he's just built right, Like that's an NFL body,
you know, an NFL type of guy right away.
Speaker 5 (15:38):
But LJ still hitting the holes.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
I like what he's done with his body as far
as I'm a huge fan of.
Speaker 5 (15:45):
And I think Jerry Rice, you know Tatus this early on.
Speaker 4 (15:48):
Like five pounds for a skill position is a ton
of weight because not for your breakaway speed or just
you know, your forty time, but that quickness to where
LJ maybe doesn't take as many clean shots as he
did last year. So if you have just that five
pounds where you're just a little bit more shifty left
or right instead of taking that shot directly into the rib.
(16:10):
Maybe it's a glancing blow where you get a shoulder
pad in the rib instead of a helmet.
Speaker 5 (16:14):
In the rib.
Speaker 4 (16:15):
You know, maybe it's that thing where you're just moving
just enough wiggle to where you can avoid. You may
not break for extra yards, but you're going to avoid
that shot that you would get clean up or.
Speaker 5 (16:24):
Squared up by a running back.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
So I love the fact that he's changed his body
and he's quicker now than I've seen him. I mean
it reminds me kind of visits freshman year, but stronger
obviously and more physical and then just to just experience.
Speaker 5 (16:38):
So I'll go with LJ.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
But I also, I mean, you know, it's hard not
to go with Chase either. Chase has been so impressive,
like as a leader on that team. So I'll go
with those two from the scale position and then the
up side of the offensive line that I think their
best days are ahead of them, and I mean really
good days yet to come if they can geil like
I think they can.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
Yeah, A Rod was adamant, adamant that b y who
is going to be able to run the football effectively
this season.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
And I think a lot of it has to do with, yes, the.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
Running backs, the running back room, but yeap, that front,
that front five. You know that they look pretty strong
in the run game.
Speaker 4 (17:18):
And we who's our guard that still hasn't played, that's
still Whalen. Yeah, so here comes another experienced guard also,
you know, a Keanu type for the offense where you
know he's just out there to just destroy and a
leader off the field, like I think you only get
stronger now.
Speaker 5 (17:39):
I don't. You know, they'll have to figure out where
to plug everybody. But I mean that's gonna be the difference,
right if we can do that.
Speaker 4 (17:46):
And I mean the battle against Utah their offensive line
against our defensive front seven is just.
Speaker 5 (17:52):
Off the charge. I can't wait to see it. And
then you know the Fano brothers right on both sides
of the ball, Like that battle is going to be epic.
Speaker 4 (17:59):
I mean I think that when of that, the way
I see it lines up nicely to take on maybe
in Iowa State or you know, Arizona State. I'm not
I think they got exposed you know last week. I
think they're just okay.
Speaker 5 (18:12):
I think Scataby is that good but those are.
Speaker 4 (18:15):
The type of teams that you're gonna see. You know,
you're gonna have the battle in a big twelve championship
if we can get there. But Utah looks impressive that
way too.
Speaker 5 (18:22):
It's all up front. It's all up front on both
sides of the ball.
Speaker 2 (18:26):
Iron Byron Rex, Ladies and gentlemen talking some BYU Football.
What's your I don't know what your preseason win lost
prediction was. Has it changed it all after looking at
this team? Give me some thoughts on that. Where where
do you stand in that matter?
Speaker 5 (18:44):
No, it hasn't changed. Well, let me back up with Jake.
Speaker 4 (18:49):
I had as double digit wins, yeah right, I did
back down with Bear.
Speaker 5 (18:54):
I just you know, it's tough. Yeah, it's hard. This
is big, all right.
Speaker 4 (18:57):
So I came down to nine the first two games.
I'll be honest with you, I just haven't put a
ton of stock in them just yet.
Speaker 5 (19:06):
A wins, a wins, a win, and you got you know,
every win is hard, so I don't.
Speaker 4 (19:10):
I'm not I'm not negating those as well. I'm just
saying I'm waiting and this week will I'll have more opinions.
Speaker 5 (19:18):
After this week in East Carolina, I do. I think
this is the toughest game that we're going to get
up until.
Speaker 4 (19:23):
I mean West Virginia will be tough too, and Colorado
will be so I don't again, but it progressively gets tougher.
But I think out of the next three this he's
Carolina one. I'll have a different opinion after we play
this one.
Speaker 5 (19:34):
But no, I think I said Okay, we're gonna win.
Speaker 4 (19:38):
Ten, Now we'll probably win nine. So I think that
middle four, right, I think it. I don't know what order,
but I think it's Utah. I will stay TCU and.
Speaker 5 (19:49):
I forget the Texas.
Speaker 4 (19:52):
Yeah, that middle four is just a gauntlet, and so
I you know that'll be the test, but I just
want to get there to the test.
Speaker 5 (20:03):
I want to pass all the quizzes along the way.
Speaker 4 (20:05):
You know, I think they're more than quizzes, but you
know the preliminary tests, and those are four finals that
you know you're gonna.
Speaker 5 (20:11):
Be tested every week.
Speaker 4 (20:13):
I hope we're healthy obviously going into those and really
can see what we could do.
Speaker 5 (20:18):
But yeah, I would say win total maybe went from
ten to nine.
Speaker 4 (20:22):
But if we play where I think we can, I
don't see any reason why we can't get to ten either.
Speaker 5 (20:27):
You know, so big problems is.
Speaker 4 (20:30):
So tough man, man, I mean, Ben, that conference is
just every week, you.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
Know, I know, I know that four game Gonalless could
be tough. But even you know you vague Colorado is
gonna be tough. West Virginia could be tough. We'll see
how it all plays out. Byron, I always appreciate our
time together, brother, And when you're back in town, let's
head on over to Odeon menswhere to get you outfitted.
Speaker 5 (20:52):
I love it.
Speaker 4 (20:52):
I'm gonna go from one rep of two twenty five
to four reps.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
Yes, let's go. I know you can do more than that.
What do you mention these days?
Speaker 3 (21:02):
Huh? I know you still put in that upper body.
Speaker 5 (21:05):
Yes, it's less than I was the last time we talked.
Speaker 4 (21:07):
I guarantee you that, but it's still more than most
fifty seven year old dudes could do.
Speaker 3 (21:11):
So let's go.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
Appreciate you, Byron, much love to you, man, Thanks for
hopping on today.
Speaker 5 (21:17):
You guys are the best. Appreciate you, man, appreciate you on.
We'll talk to you guys. There you go.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
That's uh, Byron Rex former by you great tight end
and that was brought to you by Odeon Men'swear, Odeon
Menswear dot Com Get your Suit Game elevated today at
Odeon Men's where Odion Menswear dot Com mentioned Myself, ESPN
Inch Myself, Benkrittle or ESPN the Fan. You get fifteen
percent off when you head into any one of their
four locations along the Wassatch Front. I love the the
(21:42):
Elevate suit because it has ranged of motion right. So
like when I get in into the car with my
suit on and I go to buckle my seat belt,
like I don't have that restriction. I don't have to
literally like turn all the way towards like bump my
knees on the center console and then and grab the
seat belt and bring it across like I can just
reach stay square to the steering wheel and then put
(22:06):
it right into the buckle. Ronald knows what I'm talking about.
