(01:03):
rehashing the sixty nine to zero victory, the demolition, the
destruction of Portland State, the vikings. I've gotta ask this question,
is Portland State gonna end up being the worst team
in college football in twenty twenty five, And by that
I mean will they be the worst team in FCS.
(01:23):
I think they will be. In twenty seventeen, they were
the worst team in college football. They went oh to thirteen,
which is crazy because Bruce Barnum told me in the
post game that that twenty seventeen team was better than
this team that trotted in, and that was my assumption
anyway going into this game. I said that I felt
that twenty and twenty five Portland State team was worse
(01:45):
than the twenty seventeen team that actually was somewhat competitive
versus a the worst BYU football team maybe in its
history in twenty seventeen.
Speaker 4 (01:54):
So crazy times.
Speaker 5 (01:55):
Bruce Barnum, when I asked him a question about you
know you've been here now twy well, what do you
make of the experience here, He's like, number one, I
had a better team last time. Pretty crazy anyway, where

(03:06):
for this Tuesday edition of Cougar Sports. This man went
on a tirade in the post game. He went to
social media and he was ticked off. He was angry.
He brought a lot of girth to the post game.
He said, I'm going to submit a bit of a
ran here concerning Cody Hagan. Not aimed at Hagen himself,
(03:29):
mind you, not at all. This ran is aimed at
several media members last night patted themselves partily on the
backstating something to the effect of, see Gurny, that's why
Hagen was my.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Dor from dark Horse.
Speaker 5 (03:43):
The superst secrets player on BYU's football team.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
Really g men questions.
Speaker 5 (03:50):
Four star Cody Hagen, the six foot one white cheer
collect at ten five hundred meter.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
Dash at the state championship.
Speaker 5 (03:56):
One of the most impressive wide rechievers have to come
out of this Utah. Who supports a phenomenal mindset of
work ethic.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
That's your team pull. Coby Hagen performed.
Speaker 5 (04:05):
Last night like like a properly evaluated ports star wide
receiver prospect does as opposed and it's supposed to perform.
Speaker 6 (04:13):
Last night was just the beginning.
Speaker 5 (04:15):
Hagen will be a phenomenal wide receiver the Cougar's barring injury,
and shouldn't surprise anyone when he rises to become wide
receiver too by the end of the season, right behind
Chase Roberts, if.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
He isn't already there already.
Speaker 6 (04:28):
And man, wow, I loved it.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
I need to edit that last sentence.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
Yeah, the already already I was, I was, I was
a little bit I.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
Was mad at you for that.
Speaker 5 (04:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
Yeah, but g Man, angry g Man is my favorite.
Speaker 7 (04:44):
We're really gonna lead the program with that. I was
just feeling a little just irolly.
Speaker 5 (04:49):
Well, that was your best tweet of the last forty
eight hour, was you know, I mean judging by well,
I said the barlow, but uh, judging by the the
comments set and the views fifteen thousand interactions on that.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Yeah, because it's controversy.
Speaker 8 (05:04):
Ow.
Speaker 7 (05:04):
People like that and they like strong opinions, and that
was a strong opinion. And I hold to you that
Cody Hagen is phenomenal. There's no question this guy is
going to be a guy. He's he's fantastic. He has
everything you want. He has size, he has speed, he
has mindset, he has quicks. There's no chance he's not
(05:28):
going to be arousing success of b WA you and
I felt that wasted's last year when he's just no,
he was hurt last year. He would have asserted himself.
There's no question in my mind he absolutely would have.
I dare say he may have provided even better reachers
than Keillen Marry. And that's how high I am on
Cody Hagen. He's fantastic anyway, happy to be I know
(05:48):
you love Kelan, thank you, but I love Cody. So anyway,
as far as what we learned about this team, the
one notable thing to me is who came off the
bench first. That's what I readily noted. On the defense,
and there's several players. Body Schoonover came in quickly. I
(06:11):
think maybe the third play they were shuling in Body Schoonover,
Hunter Klegg, Oriyan, Miley, Kafusi, and Satawala. I think those
are four guys you got to keep an eye on.
Body Schoonover really intrigues me. I think he has the
(06:31):
potential to add a lot to that interior defense. It's
gonna be more of an interior thing than an edge
think for Body, I thought that since the first day
of fall practices, and I think he's arrived. I think
he's reached that potential. I think he was a four
star coming out of high school. He was a highly
sought after recruit, and he's kind of not been anywhere
(06:52):
within the first few years. But I just think he
has to develop and become what he should be, and
I think he's there. And yeah, I think he's gonna
be a guy hutter Klegg. I don't think that's a
surprise at all, and we kind of know that for
a while now. But what are these guys except for Oryan,
These are four star prospects, properly rated four star prospects
(07:13):
rise to the occasion, and I believe that all these
guys are falla. Tel might be the most intriguing to
me of all of them. It's a very apparent that
coaches see an extraordinary ability, an extraordinary opportunity where he
can come into that safety backfield and provide things that
other guys can and I'm very interested to see how
(07:34):
that unfolds. He was listed as co starters at both
the strong safety and free safety position, I mean free state.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
We kind of no, come on, Tanner Wall, that's not
a real thing.
Speaker 7 (07:45):
Maybe it is maybe that's what they have in store
for him, what they believe that potential. But he's definitely
someone I want to watch throughout the season to see
how he progresses, because he's a fantastic athlete in every regard.
But to me, that's what I noted more so than
anything else, is who was used, who was used.
Speaker 1 (08:05):
When, and how often?
Speaker 7 (08:08):
Very bare Hunter klegs can be used a lot, and
you'll notice in this week's dep chart the ore was
kind of removed and no, Hunter Klegg's definitely are second guy.
Did you guys know in the depth chart, Yeah, he
kind of validated himself and.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
It's very apparent he's going to be fantastic.
Speaker 7 (08:23):
But as far as his team went, I like the
twenty seventeen comparison because what Bway You has, and I
think Kilane stated very well and is is they have
a very entrench system. They know what they are. This
is what Bway You does. This is how Bway You
wins football games. It's defense, special teams, and offense kind
of follows thereafter. That's how they won last year. They
(08:46):
could have beat Portland State in any number of ways.
We know this, but how did they win this game?
Special teams kind of give them the jump start defense dominating,
then all wa, yeah, here comes the offense. That's what
b way you football, that's what it's going to be.
And I think it's a very sound method. I think
it's going to be successful. And b we absolutely has
(09:06):
identity right now. And that's what you saw with the
sixty nine nothing win. Yes, Portland State's awful. Yes, Portland
State's going to lose a lot of games. They're gonna
get creamed. But BAU has the identity where no, you're
not messing No, we're not screwing around with in any regard.
This is what we are. This is what we do.
It's it can be overwhelming to a vastly inferior opponent,
(09:28):
and that's what you take stock in. And you could
tell Klanie was very, very satisfied after the game and
on Monday, after evaluating everything.
Speaker 4 (09:36):
No doubt about it.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
G Man bringing the fire today as we break it
all down here on your Utah, ESPN ready to network call.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
So let's welcome in. Brett always bring it the hammer,
Brett Hammer, How are you? Hammertime show?
Speaker 6 (09:48):
This is what I have to say.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
Are you ready?
Speaker 6 (09:50):
I'm ready?
Speaker 1 (09:51):
All right?
Speaker 9 (09:52):
If you're gonna wear bright green cleats or bright red cleats,
or go as far as to them, because the worst
thing is when you show up at church ball and
the guy shows up with the brand new Kobe's and
then he doesn't do anything, and it's like, all right, brother,
you kind of put yourself up on a stage to
not do anything. And look, I love Jojo Phillips, I
(10:14):
love Parker Kingston, but if you're gonna wear bright Kobe kleats,
how about we at least get on the board. And
I would like to declare myself that I was not
a member of Brandon Gurney's media tirade because I said
on a number of occasions, I said, on a number
of occasions I was not convinced that Parker Kingston and
Jojo Phillips would end up in that first three group
(10:37):
of receivers when we got to the end of the season. Look,
I don't think Cody Hagen is a sleeper pick by
any means, but I did say on multiple occasions I
wasn't sure that Parker or Jojo would finish because the
depth is so good. They still could. But I feel
pretty comfortable, confident, confident, and comfortable with my take on
this wide receiver room. But also like if you're gonna
(10:59):
wear a nice cleats, get on the board.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
Yeah, and I do think Parker had a couple of
nice punk returns, true, And I mean there's a reason
why he's punt returner number one. And look, you got
to realize to Parker was a little bit dinged up
throughout fall camp and whenever you see kind of a
deemed up, tenured vet. It was maybe a little bit
sloppy on on the reception of those punt returns. But
(11:23):
I do think Parker's still gonna be punt returner one.
But that being said, Canon Devrez should be punk returner too.
Can we all agree on that one. I can agree
with you on that, like he he deserves more looks
when Parker is maybe needing a spell or you wanted
another change up at punt return or two. That's my
take regards to Cody Hagen, real quick, Brad, I appreciate
you chiming in on that, because you know, it's one
(11:43):
thing to be a contributor as like a sophomore.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
He was a contributor last season, he was dinged.
Speaker 8 (11:48):
Up a little bit.
Speaker 5 (11:49):
I think we're some media members got maybe a little bit,
I don't know, they thought it was a deep cut,
you know, a hot take is because he he didn't
really register many stats last year, and you had the
three guys right that were highlighted by FESSI is Parker,
(12:09):
Jojo Chase, and so they're like, well, he's not the
feature guy, but you and I know Bret knows, like,
look the guy.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
One of the guys that we probably.
Speaker 5 (12:19):
Collectively as as media members we didn't maybe discuss enough
heading into the season was the star power that.
Speaker 6 (12:26):
Is Cody Hagen.
Speaker 5 (12:27):
It's one thing to be a contributor, it's another thing
to become a star. And I think you you elaborating
on it is a powerful uh a powerful you know,
ramiumpt the moment for you, right, because.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
I wasn't serious.
Speaker 5 (12:42):
I wasn't like, really, no man is looking down on
all I get down on everyone. Wide receiver too, though,
I think that's an awesome take because I am all
in on Cody Hagen being in that conversation. I am
all in on Cody Hagen because I mean a maybe
(13:03):
even like I think he's got the potential to be
a wide receiver one type of player That's what I
think by the end of the year, I think he
could become that.
Speaker 1 (13:13):
Over two play cornerback at the level.
Speaker 5 (13:23):
Realize, Aaron Roderick will never just feed one guy in
the receiving game. Like even with Puka Puka, you know
he was.
Speaker 4 (13:32):
Involved in a number of ways.
Speaker 5 (13:33):
But even he had the ancillary auxiliary wide receiver two
wide and Suvar.
Speaker 4 (13:38):
Three, there was there was balance to it all.
Speaker 5 (13:41):
It wasn't this high volume of Puka all day every day.
He also had injuries, right, he also had injuries.
Speaker 4 (13:46):
So you want volume, right, but at what cost?
Speaker 5 (13:50):
And that's where I see the wide receiver two thing
most likely playing out. But from a skill set standpoint,
the top end speed with phenomenal catching rage itous that
he has, he can break you off really quick coming
out of his routes. He's phenomenal. I love the Cody
Hagen rant. I need more of it, all right, guys,
Ronald three man, we were also in the house, Martin
(14:12):
Kelly behind the glass. Let's get into some of the
nitty gritty, Okay, always brought to you by Ruby's in
rubies in dot com.
Speaker 10 (14:18):
Gentlemen, we please presents with that interpretation of the.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
One to one too.
Speaker 8 (14:39):
So anyways, let's get down to.
Speaker 5 (14:43):
Ben nitty gritty always brought to you by our good
friends at rubies In rubies In dot Com.
Speaker 4 (14:48):
I love rubies In.
Speaker 5 (14:48):
It's where me and my wife fell madly, deeply in
love as we were walking through the red rock formations
called hoodoos.
Speaker 8 (14:55):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (14:55):
It is a beautiful place to visit. Make sure you're
staying at Ruby's In.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
Ruby.
Speaker 4 (15:00):
I love Bryce Canyon National Park.
Speaker 5 (15:02):
Just a short scenic drive away from your Utah County
location or Sale County location, wherever you're at, it's not
too far away from you.
Speaker 4 (15:09):
Ruby's In is your spot for family fun.
Speaker 5 (15:11):
It's a little bit cheaper than some of ther other
vacations you go on, Like at the Mouse, right, g Man,
that's very it'll just take all your money.
Speaker 4 (15:19):
At Ruby's In. We're not taking all your money.
Speaker 5 (15:21):
We're gonna give back to you with an experience. See
at the Mouse. I'm not trying to compete against the mouths,
but I'm just saying the Mouse will take all your money,
and then you're gonna be addicted to going there, and
you're gonna spend more money. Like look, save a little
bit of money and get a new experience, A novel
experience at Bryce Canyon National Park.
Speaker 6 (15:39):
How about a guided horseback ride? How about that?
Speaker 5 (15:41):
How about a boot scooting boogie night at Ebenezer's Barn
and grill delicious food and fantastic music.
Speaker 4 (15:47):
Get the most value for your.
Speaker 5 (15:48):
Getaway at rubys in rubies in dot com, rubies in
dot Com. All right, guys, Kladi Shataki post Gablet's read
between the lines if you will. This was his opening
statement after the sixty nine to zero demolition of the
Portland State Vikings.
Speaker 11 (16:03):
Sorry being late the have you got the win. Proud
of a lot of things I saw in the game. Obviously,
I'm gonna be a coach and say that it wasn't
perfect and there's a lot of places that we can
improve on. But I was really proud of the entire
team from beginning to end. And at the beginning it
(16:26):
we had some uh some rough times. I mean I
think we punted the first series, uh defense, gave up
some plays, got the turnover, and so the block field
goal kind of wash, you know, swung the moment of
our way. The guys never looked back afterwards, even come
in after halftime. I really liked the what what our
(16:47):
ones are doing. But we knew that the game was
pretty much done, and so we put our reserve guys
in in the second.
Speaker 8 (16:54):
Half, and I was really proud of the way that
they played.
Speaker 11 (16:56):
Got some really good valuable reps and great competition that
we were from them, and I thought they performed at
a high level. So that's going to help our depth,
you know. But you know, I wish Portland State best
luck the rest of the way. I mean, I know
they got banged up in this game in the game before,
so hopefully you can get healthy and be ready to
play the rest of their schedule, especially next week. So
(17:17):
but proud of the team and looking forward to next week.
I think you can make a lot of improvement from
week one to week two, and looking forward to getting
that done. Watching the film, but overall, just really excited
about what we saw from them.
Speaker 6 (17:29):
Yeah, there you go.
Speaker 5 (17:32):
That's Coladasataky's opening statement after the Portland State game. By
the way, do you know how much money that Bay
you paid Portland State to come to provo?
Speaker 1 (17:41):
I do not.
Speaker 5 (17:42):
Bruce Bartum said, I just raised a million dollars from
my school.
Speaker 4 (17:48):
I mean, that's what he said, A million dollars for
a school. That's crazy.
Speaker 6 (17:54):
That is crazy pay games maybe.
Speaker 5 (17:57):
I mean there were times in which BYU was heading
out on the road too to a Power for destination
to getting one point two million, you know for a
that was kind of like a pay game to come
to a Power for school, right, pay game to probo
one million dollars for Portland State.
Speaker 4 (18:12):
Nice for Bruce Barnum and Barny Ball.
Speaker 7 (18:14):
Colonnie kind of expanded on this today in today's presser
on Monday's presser, But I think the remarkable thing and
the notable thing is when you play a team that's
vastly inferior, like Portland State, you lose focus, right. I
think that's a tendency of a lot of players. It's like,
all right, you're not as engaged, you're not as intent
on completing your assignment.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
I don't think you saw that hardly at all from anybody.
Speaker 7 (18:38):
That speaks to team culture, that speaks to coaching, and
I think that's what the overwhelming sentiment that Colonnie had
where there was no drop off between the second and
third or fourth team.
Speaker 1 (18:49):
They all went in.
Speaker 7 (18:51):
Plus the sideline was engaged having some major dance party
going into the fourth quarter.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
The engagement is really good on.
Speaker 7 (18:59):
This team, and that's culture and you can absolutely see
that is there. Yeah, that opponent vastly inferior, but you
did every single thing you were supposed to do, and
I think you can take a lot from that.
Speaker 5 (19:12):
Is Portland State the worst team in college football? He
might be, I think they are. I think they are.
But to your point on dance parties, you had to
wait twenty five minutes before they got to the pulpit
because they were having a dance party in the locker
room as well. You got to celebrate even the wins
over fcsfos, especially the worst in the FCS. I guess
all right, Portland has had a total of negative yards
(19:36):
in the second and third quarters. Klattie, What did they
do on the defensive end to clamp them down?
Speaker 11 (19:42):
I think the defense, I mean this is they're in
the system now, so there's a lot of guys that
have been here for a while and spend a lot
of time with Jay Hill and the.
Speaker 8 (19:52):
Entire defensive staff.
Speaker 11 (19:53):
Having the whole defense staff intact and returning was huge
for us, and it shows and the way these guys
have been ready, I mean, I think a lot of
times when you have some turnover and and some some
changes in the coaching staff, he could you have to
get guys used to a new coach. And I think
that's harder than what people think. And so I'm really
thankful that we were able to hang on to our
(20:14):
coaches and uh, you know, I think it's going to
help us in the long run, especially through the season.
But for the depth and for what we're looking for
the team, having the consistency in the positioning group in
the room who's speaking was nice. And j Hill's done
a great job with the defense. I'm really really happy
with what he's done and looking forward to what they
(20:36):
can accomplish even more this year, especially Week two when
we take on Stanford. Offensively, I thought we did enough
that what we needed to do. I mean, I think
A Rod felt like he he knew we could run
the ball. I think at the end, we just wanted
to see bear in that two minute situation. I thought
it did a great job, you know, and so but
after that it was kind of we knew to just
shut them down and LJ and and the rest of
(20:58):
the guys, and so we had a lot of threes
playing in the game too, so it was a lot
of fun.
Speaker 4 (21:03):
I think the defense all right, there you go.
Speaker 5 (21:06):
Dan's kelatate discussing the defense performance kind of piggybacking off
of what you just stated about the continuity of the chemistry,
the culture of the defense. That's where you see little
to no drop off, no drop off whatsoever.
Speaker 4 (21:17):
In the twos, the threes, the fours. Shoot.
Speaker 5 (21:20):
There may be even have been fifth stringers that saw
PT versus portland Stone.
Speaker 7 (21:23):
One thing I really liked, and I've been high on
this guy all preseason, is Isaiah Jada. Did you see
how enthusiastic he was throughout the game, just celebrating, just
cheering and all that. That's weird to see from an
offensive tackle. Let's be honest, Isaiah Jada wants to pummel
guys out there. I think that's the big benefit you're
gonna see from him. Maybe as opposed to kayleb Bett
(21:45):
in last year's I think Isaiah Jada has a different
mindset and I really like the tackles, especially run block.
I think Andrew Gentry is everything you wanted him to be.
He's born out. In my opinion, I think it's going
to be an exceptional offensive line. It's going to be
better than last year. I think in every single position.
Bway's going to be stronger across the board. On the
(22:06):
offensive line and that's where it starts. And with the
strides bee Ways made on that defensive line, this is
the final piece for Bway football in my opinion, and
you can see it forming and it's very exciting with
this offensive line, this defensive line's coming together. Defensive tackles,
I had that concerned. I stated it, it's not there anymore.
I think they had the pieces to be a very
(22:27):
very good line muted on both sides of the football.
Speaker 5 (22:32):
How do you break down bear Bachmeier's performance, Kalate, what
did you make of it?
Speaker 8 (22:37):
Great job?
Speaker 11 (22:38):
I mean, I think the physical part of the game
was was something that once he started getting hit a
little bit, then I think he was able to settle down.
I think it's hard when you get into this environment.
I don't know if they were ready for the stands
to be that packed. And there's a huge, huge credit
(22:58):
to our fans. They're all somber, we're not even school yet,
and then there's a packed house and they're excited to
watch Boa football, and so I think that could get
you a little bit nervous. So I think he was
able to settle down, and I think on some of
the throws he wished he could get those back. But
over I thought he had a good demeanor about him.
I thought he had a great presence. The guys felt
(23:20):
really good about him leaving the offense, and I felt
good about how it finished in the first half.
Speaker 7 (23:27):
What I liked about bear Bachmeers he was making correct reads,
even his incompletions. He was just missing the throws that's
going to come. But that's what I really liked is
I did not see him throw him the double coverage.
He undergrew that pass to Carson Ryan, which Carson made
a fantastic play on. It's two incompletions to Chase Roberts
down the sideline. I like that every single time. I mean,
(23:48):
Chase had tight coverage, but throw it up to Chase
Roberts every single time you see him in single coverage.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
Wasn't able to deliver it to him. But I liked
that mindset a lot.
Speaker 7 (23:57):
Miss Cody Eagan on a post pattern that would have
gone for a touchdown probably, I think I think that's
all those incompletions, but.
Speaker 1 (24:05):
I like that mindset.
Speaker 7 (24:08):
As he settles in, gets those reps that's going to come.
But I like that he was making the right reads.
I think you would ask a Rod to break that down.
I think all of his eleven passes, he probably threw
it to the right guy, and I think that's.
Speaker 1 (24:20):
Extraordinary for a true freshman quarterback.
Speaker 7 (24:23):
That's the positive I took away from this, And I
think what Coloney said is absolutely like.
Speaker 1 (24:27):
I'm gonna argue with Colonnie, but.
Speaker 7 (24:28):
Bear is what he is. It's not something all I
can run, No, I want to run. This is what
I do. I have a girthy lower body. I can
lower the boom. This is what I am. My name
is Bear Bachmeyer. I work forty seven. Get me out there,
let me lower that shoulder, then everything comes thereafter. You
absolutely saw that that's what he is. That's what he's
(24:50):
going to be throughout his career. I think coaches recognize that.
So yeah, let the bear feast, let him lower that shoulder,
and everything's gonna come thereafter.
Speaker 5 (24:59):
Klan, did you consider playing Bear Blackmeyer in the second half.
Speaker 11 (25:03):
We thought about it, but I think at the end
of the first half was kind of like that was enough.
I think we wanted to see him in that and
I don't think anyone can blame us for trying to
score and in a two minute situations. So once we
saw that, I think it was easy to shut down.
I'm not trying to pat stats. I'm trying to keep
guys healthy. And at the same time, you can keep
guys healthy but then work on depth and get some
(25:25):
valuable reps. I think it's going to pay off in
the long run. We had o Lineman. I mean that
there were very valuable reps with those because and they
were able to have some success. And then we went
down to the line on our on our players and
it was a you know, it's a great time for
those guys to be in that situation. So I didn't
mind it at all. And you know, I just talked
to my wife on the phone. She's like, it you
(25:47):
stop trying to look so disappointed when you score and
stuff like that. I was just I wasn't disappointed, Like,
let's just run the clocked out and you know, trying
to do the levelle like thing. You know, But but
when when the team's rolling and guys are doing what
they're supposed to then successful, we'll be there, and so
I'm I don't mind what they had, what we did
(26:07):
in the second half. I thought the coach Barnum too
and he felt he felt fine with everything, So that
made me feel a lot better.
Speaker 5 (26:14):
Diego, that's uh, that's Killanie not playing Bear in the
second half. There are many bou fans that wanted to
see Bear in the second half because he only attempted
eleven passes. So if you're gonna have any question marks
surrounding Bear Bachmeyer heading into Stanford, it would be I
think his passing efficiency, proficiency, the throws that he made
(26:35):
that were incomplete. What do you make of those throws?
Speaker 4 (26:40):
Gee?
Speaker 7 (26:41):
Man, well, I think it was the right target, right target.
I think he was just inaccurate, okay, and with repetitions
that that's a normal thing. This guy hasn't had a
lot of reps relative to where Resloff would have showed
you this year or even McKay hill said, or treats
more gay that's going to come. There's no question in
my mind he will be accurate. He just needs more
and with more reps. That's why I love that the
(27:02):
by coming when it is because Stanford, they should be
able to get by. With Barry Whittle and the defense
dominating and b Way you doing what it does. They're
going to need Bear to be more proficient. Probably come
East Carolina, definitely come Colorado, and I think with the
schedule working out, he's going to get there because he's
on top of it.
Speaker 1 (27:20):
With his reads, I really do believe that.
Speaker 7 (27:21):
I think he's making the progressions very smoothly and he's
reading coverages.
Speaker 1 (27:28):
Again, Portland State's probably not the best test. I don't know.
Maybe everybody was open all the time.
Speaker 7 (27:33):
That very well could have been the fact, but it
seemed like he was making the right reads.
Speaker 5 (27:37):
To me, I'm still not convinced that Bears a good
or great throwing quarterback. I think he's an average too
sometimes good throwing quarterback.
Speaker 4 (27:48):
That's what I would.
Speaker 5 (27:49):
Say, Like from an arm strength standpoint, from a mechanic standpoint,
I told you guys consistently throughout Fall Camp, I'm like, yeah,
he's good enough, And quite honestly, Jake was good enough.
But every once of all Jake would actually happen elite throw.
You know, he had it in him to make an
elite throw.
Speaker 4 (28:04):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (28:05):
If Bear has it him yet as a true freshman
to make an elite throw, elite trajectory, elite timing, elite armstrength.
I don't know if it's there yet, and I don't
know if we're gonna see that Vert Stanford. I do
like him as a decision maker. I think he's smart,
and that's where you're gonna get maybe a better return
on investment is his decision making, whereas Jake his decision
(28:25):
making was.
Speaker 10 (28:26):
A little bit vollat all, a little bit you know
what I mean, Like pulling it versus Oklahoma on the
goal line rather than handing off the LJ and trying
to connect with Cody Epps because he was a little
bit selfish, right.
Speaker 5 (28:40):
That was not not good, Bob. So that's where that's
where you're getting back.
Speaker 4 (28:46):
That's what you're getting.
Speaker 5 (28:47):
But you don't get that opposite hash NFL throw that
you could get every once in a while from Jake Retzlava.
Speaker 4 (28:56):
So it's interesting.
Speaker 5 (28:57):
Anyway, Let's go with one more SoundBite that will take
a brief time out and come back with our question
of the day. What we actually learn from this game?
What do we know about this team after this game?
When you said there are areas that you can improve on. Killatti,
does anything come to mind right away?
Speaker 8 (29:15):
Yeah, yeah, right away.
Speaker 11 (29:16):
I think it's the I mean, it's at the end
I cut you off.
Speaker 8 (29:19):
It's the penalties.
Speaker 11 (29:21):
And then I say that it's like, I don't know
if that was any of the ones, but it doesn't
really matter. I think we had a couple holding penalties
and then we had one that took away a great
return from Kennon Debrees, So there's that, and then then
then then a fifteen yarder targeting, you know. But I mean,
(29:41):
the guys is just really excited and apped up to play,
but we have to have better mindset and better control,
be more disciplined. We've been really focusing on that. We
had a delay game, but we were trying to milk
the clock, so I don't I don't blame the guys
on that one.
Speaker 8 (29:55):
They're just trying to milk it too much. But yeah,
other than.
Speaker 11 (29:59):
That, I think I think execution wise, I think we
did for the most part of the guys. Actually, all
eleven guys in the field played clean football and assignment
sound football. I want to watch the film see how
we did fundamentally, if we if we missed a lot
of tackles or not. But I thought the guys flying
around they looked really good.
Speaker 2 (30:15):
Man.
Speaker 8 (30:15):
I just from what.
Speaker 11 (30:17):
I watched and what I saw in all three phases,
I thought we looked really good and looked really fast,
and I'm really excited about that.
Speaker 5 (30:24):
All Right, there you go, guys, any thoughts there as
we wrap up that segment.
Speaker 1 (30:28):
G Man, I just want to reemphasize b Way's fast.
Speaker 7 (30:31):
This is a fast, fast team, fastest team b Way
he's ever had.
Speaker 1 (30:35):
I think it's very apparent they have some absolute burgers.
Speaker 5 (30:38):
Well, now I need to ask this next question to Kalate.
Is this the fastest team you've had since you have
been I'm sorry, is this the fastest team you've ever
had since being?
Speaker 4 (30:46):
F Uyu kilt one last sound bite the number.
Speaker 8 (30:52):
Six tell you that.
Speaker 11 (30:54):
Yeah, when we look at all the stuff and see
how quick they were on it's just we need them
to be though, because if you go the wrong way
and you do it faster, you're really wrong, you know
what I mean? So, and that took some practicing, but
the guys have actually been working really hard on it,
and we just got to keep We just got to
keep working though.
Speaker 8 (31:12):
Stay humble, keep working.
Speaker 11 (31:14):
I think I think the guys are excited that their
teammates got opportunities to play in second half, and they're
really excited when the guys got to score.
Speaker 8 (31:21):
Touchdowns and stuff like that. So she had just got
to keep it rolling, though.
Speaker 11 (31:25):
So we're gonna nitpick this thing and try to find
ways to get better anyway we can, because that's that's
just what we do as a staff. But really proud
of the entire staff and how hard they worked, and
proud of our players and the mental state that they
came into the game was awesome.
Speaker 5 (31:40):
Fastest team to ever come through Brigham, faster than Nate Solberg,
Faster than.
Speaker 4 (31:48):
Who else is a part of that class. It's Rod Wilkerson.
Speaker 1 (31:53):
Rod Wilkerson, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (31:54):
Come on, faster than those two guys.
Speaker 1 (31:58):
Well, they have lateral movement too.
Speaker 7 (31:59):
I don't think you'd ever accuse of Roder Wilkerson or
Nate Solberg of having really deaf lateral movements, Let's be honest.
I think that's the big difference is it's not just
straight ahead, it's lateral speed. These guys have quicks and
I think that's probably even more important than the straight
ahead speed.
Speaker 5 (32:17):
All I'm saying, g man, I mean, that's a tall
order right there to say it's the fastest team ever.
Speaker 1 (32:23):
I don't think it's.
Speaker 4 (32:24):
It's not even closed, right.
Speaker 5 (32:27):
Do you think the four by one team of twenty
twenty five comprised the BYU football players is faster than
the four by one team with Rod Wilkerson, right, Cody
Fons beck.
Speaker 4 (32:41):
Ooh, Cody Foh, Nate Solberg, oh Man.
Speaker 5 (32:46):
Brett Cooper also was a Blazer. Brett was fast, bro.
Speaker 7 (32:50):
Yeah, it'd be comparable. But like I said, it is
the lateral movement that I think this team has over
that team, and you take that lateral movement of this
year's team the week.
Speaker 5 (33:00):
All right, we'll go to break guys. Question of today.
What do we actually learn from this game? What did
we learn? What do we know now that we didn't
know before before the Portland State game. We're gonna discuss next.

Speaker 5 (35:34):

Speaker 6 (35:36):
All right, he has people Bread. I know you're wondering

Speaker 1 (35:38):
He I can tell Bread don't like it either.
Speaker 4 (35:42):
Yeah, it's not a great song, but.
Speaker 1 (35:45):
It's a fantastic song.
Speaker 5 (35:47):
Stop it all right, So let's what did we learn? No, no,
I kind of feel like I'm back in Morocco again,
I'll be honest.
Speaker 6 (35:58):
That's what I thought too.
Speaker 5 (35:59):
This was I was like that kind of felt like
I needed to go get some shwarma.
Speaker 4 (36:05):
That's what I felt like.
Speaker 6 (36:06):
That's what I felt like.
Speaker 5 (36:07):
And I love shwarma by the way. You go, you know,
so there you go. I'm kind of hungry. I'm not
eaten all day. So let's talk about what we learned
about this BYU Cougar football team.
Speaker 4 (36:17):
What can be learned? What did we find out?
Speaker 8 (36:20):
Gee?
Speaker 4 (36:20):
Man, like, give me like some hard line, like I know,
I know, I know.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
We didn't learn a darn thing about this football team.
Speaker 4 (36:30):
Wow, nothing nothing, nothing, nothing.
Speaker 7 (36:33):
But that is a great things, Ma Brets Matting because
the foundation is set, the coaches are there, you know
the system, you know what this team is, what it presents,
what it's going to be.
Speaker 1 (36:46):
That's a strength that I already knew everything.
Speaker 7 (36:49):
I knew every single thing that I saw transpire come. Well,
maybe not everything, you can Nippick, I didn't know where
Ryan Miiley CAFUSI was.
Speaker 1 (36:57):
Going to be a guy.
Speaker 7 (36:58):
What do you I interviewed him. I know, man, I
didn't listen to it. Sorry, but maybe some little nuances
here and there. But I'm talking out on a macro view.
Speaker 6 (37:06):
No no, no, don't do that.
Speaker 1 (37:08):
You want me to go micro No, no, no no.
Speaker 6 (37:10):
You also believed in a micro win.
Speaker 1 (37:13):
Okay, I said my piece. Let's hear what what Brett?
Bring the hammer, Let me get, let me get, let
me get on the first.
Speaker 12 (37:19):
First of all, you didn't even believe that they would
cover the spread, goofy.
Speaker 6 (37:23):
So now I'm gonna get you.
Speaker 4 (37:24):
I'm coming.
Speaker 12 (37:27):
In front in front of your face as I'm doing
right now. And I told you I was gonna get
you on to the day you first say that. And
now you have the audacity so academic. That's not academics.
Speaker 6 (37:38):
If everything was.
Speaker 12 (37:38):
So macroing on poor you'd been like, yeah, they're gonna
beat him, they're gonna put up fisy, But you didn't
even believe that right there. Now you're gonna come in
on a Tuesday after a nice weekend and tell the people.
Speaker 1 (37:49):
Of false story.
Speaker 5 (37:50):
I'm me answered here. I appreciate that that fire that.
Speaker 4 (37:56):
Call him out for the lack of a belief.
Speaker 5 (37:58):
But I I I get it, g Man, you already
knew this team now, Brett, I disagree, Brett, what did
you learn like?
Speaker 4 (38:05):
And why do you disagree with the g Man?
Speaker 9 (38:07):
So I just disagree with the premise because there's I
think there's a lot of people who believe you can't
learn anything from FCS games. There's one thing you can learn.
You can learn whether or not you suck. I agree
because because I'm not sure if anybody remembers, but Peel,
you played this team in twenty seventeen and you did
not learn the same thing then that you learned with
(38:28):
this team now. So you can absolutely learn when you
play an FCS team, you don't find out whether you're great,
but you can find out whether or not you're good.
Speaker 1 (38:36):
Or you suck.
Speaker 9 (38:37):
And we found out on Saturday this team absolutely does
not in any way suck, which may I add, goes
a long way because there have been years where we
struggled with FCS schools and we didn't have a kicker
who could hit from fifty five plus, and we didn't
have a freshman quarterback who looked really great, and we
didn't have an LJ.
Speaker 4 (38:58):
Martin.
Speaker 6 (38:59):
So you learned that you have a team that.
Speaker 9 (39:02):
Can dominate poor competition, which is not something that every
team in the country can say.
Speaker 7 (39:06):
My only counterpoint is that we already knew that.
Speaker 6 (39:10):
But until it goes out on the field, I don't
know that you believe that what the true freshman.
Speaker 9 (39:18):
I just don't know until because you can think a
lot of things from fall camp, but until you actually
go out and you see your team play.
Speaker 6 (39:25):
I mean, let's let's be honest. Did this team score
on their first drive offensively? Uh huh?
Speaker 9 (39:31):
I don't think so so, and when that happened, I said, Okay,
maybe this is just they need to kick the dust off.
And I agree with you, g Man, I think they're great,
and I theoretically, I think that when you watch.
Speaker 6 (39:42):
Fall camp, you're like, Okay, this team's awesome.
Speaker 9 (39:44):
However, the reality of the situation is until you watch
your team go out and dominate an FCS opponent, you
don't really know as much as you maybe think that
you do.
Speaker 7 (39:53):
I also, it was a validation, I think, is what
you're saying. It's a validation of what we thought we knew.
Speaker 6 (39:59):
Well.
Speaker 5 (39:59):
I do think you brought up a nugget, the four
first defensive players to come in.
Speaker 6 (40:04):
Yeah, that's something.
Speaker 5 (40:07):
So you mentioned it. We're the four first four guys
to be inserted.
Speaker 7 (40:11):
Body Scoon over Hunter klegg uh Oriyan Miley Kafusi, And.
Speaker 4 (40:19):
Yeah, I think that's intriguing. Those four guys that were.
Speaker 1 (40:22):
Stuff like that's always intriguing.
Speaker 5 (40:24):
That's I would say, Shaye Bryant Strawther is going to
be one of those guys too that's inserted as like.
Speaker 1 (40:29):
But we kind of knew that already.
Speaker 4 (40:31):
Okay, all right, we are that. Okay, so let me
ask you this.
Speaker 5 (40:34):
Did you were you convinced that Jovesa du Moudi could
be a viable RB three?
Speaker 1 (40:39):
I was not.
Speaker 5 (40:40):
After this game, are you convinced that he can be
a viable RB three?
Speaker 1 (40:43):
No, I'm still not there.
Speaker 4 (40:44):
You're still not there.
Speaker 1 (40:45):
I'm still not.
Speaker 4 (40:45):
See I'm actually I like him now.
Speaker 5 (40:48):
I like him because of his speed, his scattiness, and
then you saw some of the highlights come through. We
got to see him in practice too. I was like, Okay,
he's quick, he's scatty. But then you got to see
him in a live game do it against SFO.
Speaker 4 (41:00):
That's not good.
Speaker 5 (41:01):
But he was he I think he's gonna be good
enough to be an RB three. I like him at
RB three. I'm fine with him at RB three.
Speaker 4 (41:09):
Is he a star?
Speaker 1 (41:10):
No?
Speaker 5 (41:10):
But I like the changing. He's different than jone, and
he's different than LJ. So I like that. I I
felt validated, or rather, I feel more confident in Joe
Vessa as RB three.
Speaker 1 (41:23):
Can I be honest, I didn't really watch much of
the second half?
Speaker 6 (41:29):
Man, do you hear this? Get him? This is like
this guy.
Speaker 9 (41:33):
This is like when someone says a movie is bad
but they haven't actually seen it.
Speaker 6 (41:36):
They flip through it one Ti'm on cable. Oh but
it can't be that.
Speaker 7 (41:39):
I am a newspaper writer. Okay, we have deadline. We
knew how that game was, so g Man was typing
up stuff. But anyway, I I'll go with what you
said about Joe Vessa.
Speaker 4 (41:51):
Can I bring up someone who's intriguing one more thing?
Speaker 6 (41:55):
I think?
Speaker 4 (41:57):
Look, let's go back.
Speaker 5 (41:58):
A year and a half ago in spring ball, when
we were having a kicking competition Will Farren versus Matthias Dunn.
Speaker 1 (42:07):
Oh my gosh, do you remember this? It never got
lower for the kickers.
Speaker 4 (42:11):
And remember every practice we went to like they missed
every kid.
Speaker 1 (42:14):
Can I describe this?
Speaker 4 (42:15):
Like every kid?
Speaker 7 (42:16):
But like the whole team was surrounding them, and we
saw some of the worst balls and I seriously thought
that they were having some defensive lineman kickfield goals sprinkled
some linebackers, and then we've learned though they were the
real kickers.
Speaker 1 (42:29):
It was like, are you kidding me?
Speaker 5 (42:32):
And k pop Tips kept on, Hey, we're gonna be fine.
We're gonna be fine, Like are we sure? I asked
the question like should we go to the portal.
Speaker 6 (42:39):
And get another kick?
Speaker 4 (42:41):
And then there's no offense.
Speaker 5 (42:43):
To Will right Like I was like, hey, I'm just
not seeing it, and Kelly was time and time again,
and then you know, Will took the job last year,
but at no point like over the last year where
we're like Will Farron is indubitably an NFL kicker, right, Like,
indubitably he's an NFL guy.
Speaker 4 (42:59):
He's the next level. I think after this game him
setting the.
Speaker 5 (43:01):
Record tying the record of Owen Potman for a fifty
six yarder on grass, yes at elevation, but with like
ten fifteen yards this fair, and then Killani on the
back end saying he's a next level kicker.
Speaker 4 (43:13):
I'm like, he's an NFL kicker. I love it.
Speaker 5 (43:16):
I love that the fact that we have an NFL
placekicker and it's coming off of an all time score.
Speaker 4 (43:21):
He's got the all time scoring record. Jake Oldroyd.
Speaker 7 (43:24):
Here's my comfort, Will far and it's a movie cup.
I think you're gonna like this is remember Off of
Space how he goes through that hypnosis and nothing affects him.
He's just going to do what he does and he
does not care. That's Will Farren. Nothing gets to him.
It's like he was hypnotized. He's like the dude on
the office space where it's just like, ah, I don't
care they ask him. Is like I whatever situation you
(43:48):
saw that with his reaction over that forty six yard
field goal over.
Speaker 1 (43:52):
Utah, Yeah no, I don't care. If it's just what
I do, it's not a thing.
Speaker 7 (43:57):
He's the main character from Off of Space after being hypnotized.
Speaker 1 (44:01):
I love it. That's what Will Ferron is right now.
Speaker 4 (44:03):
So that's something I learned. I mean, it was validated.
Speaker 5 (44:06):
I thought maybe possibly, but like when I look at
the journey of Will over the last year and a half,
that's not that long of a that's not that long
ago when we were talking about should we go into
the portal. He gets the starting job, he proves us
that he's a guy. He hits the game winner. But like,
even going into the season, are we're like, is he
an NFL guy?
Speaker 6 (44:24):
And I think he's an NFL kicker?
Speaker 5 (44:26):
And so like that's something I learned and it's validated,
and I think that that's tangible, and I learned about
this team.
Speaker 4 (44:31):
I think Will's going to be an NFL kicker.
Speaker 9 (44:34):
I think one of Will's best strengths is someone who's
spent I spent a lot of time with Will Ferren.
Speaker 6 (44:40):
One of his biggest strengths.
Speaker 9 (44:41):
Is that he is such a goofball, like when you're
in a stressful situation, again, because I've hung out with
him a number of times when you're stressed, like he's
the guy that just somehow pops the bubble and takes
the load alf And I think that's his biggest strength
as a kicker. And you heard it in media of it,
and you heard it host game when he's like, yeah,
I just how to take us through this? How did
(45:04):
you make this kick? I don't know I just you
just kind of go up there like he doesn't think
too deeply about it.
Speaker 6 (45:09):
In the best way possible.
Speaker 9 (45:11):
I was telling Ronnie like, it's almost like Steph Curry
when he goes up to hit a free throw, Like
you're not concerned whether or not Steph is gonna hit
the free throw. You're just kind of getting on your phone.
You're kind of like, g man, You're just, hey, what
am I riding next? You're there's zero concern at this
point as to whether or not Will Farron can do
what he's going to do.
Speaker 6 (45:30):
It's an afterthought.
Speaker 1 (45:31):
And how about the kickoffs? True? Even the kickoffs were.
Speaker 12 (45:34):
Just that's a great question about the loss.
Speaker 1 (45:40):
Give me more of that. That was beautiful.
Speaker 4 (45:42):
You know something else, That's what I think.
Speaker 5 (45:45):
It's a good takeaway from this game that was completely
out of hand immediately, Like, what what can you really
learn about a team in a sixty ninety zero demolition
destruction of the worst team in college football?
Speaker 4 (45:58):
There's not There's not much, but there's a few little things.
Speaker 6 (46:01):
Here and there.
Speaker 12 (46:01):
I think the depth that we were looking for as
media members is they're like, I like what I saw
out Lucky Few.
Speaker 6 (46:08):
He reminded me of running hard like Moore.
Speaker 12 (46:10):
I know people like, oh, that's garbage time, But I
think the running back people who they have, I think
if those guys get their number called, they could With
the offensive line and the boys up front, I think
they'll have a chance. Now, obviously guys need more reps,
and we didn't have an opportunity to even see Preston
Rex at our logan pains.
Speaker 5 (46:26):
Why you've averaged nine point eight yards per carry. I
do think there is validation from a Rod. Remember a Rod.
Out of all the things that a Rod declared.
Speaker 6 (46:34):
We're gonna be able to run the football.
Speaker 5 (46:36):
One of his most adamant commentaries in fall cap was
we're going to be able to run.
Speaker 6 (46:40):
The Well, that's why I bring that point up, because we.
Speaker 5 (46:42):
Were gonna be everybody's running the football four hundred and
freaking sixty eight yards. Now that's Portland State once again.
But I think you've talked about this a lot, and we've.
Speaker 4 (46:52):
Discussed a lot. Gie man offensive line.
Speaker 5 (46:56):
I think it's going to be better than it was
last year, and I think it's primarily to the there
are more aggressive violent nature at the point of attack
in the run game. Yeah, one thing Ben yeah, yeah,
and which Caleb and Braiden are both very long, obviously
high level tackles in pass pro, they weren't as violent
(47:17):
at the point attack.
Speaker 4 (47:18):
I do think you get a little bit more drive.
Speaker 5 (47:20):
You're also a little bit shorter than you were, maybe
comparative to to Braiden and Caleb. We're talking well no, no,
I mean Caleb's like six eight and and and and
uh Andrews probably six eight, but I mean Braiden six',
nine AND i means super tall and uh In, Caleb,
Yeah kayla's tall. Man isaiah's not six, eight he's six.
Speaker 6 (47:40):
Six. Yeah whoever said he's six?
Speaker 1 (47:43):
Eight That's.
Speaker 12 (47:43):
Walsh also, Speed, ben we saw all the speed you
Saw Cody, hagen you Saw Parker kingston and even say
this AND i like this Touchdown Dominic. MACKENZIE i don't
know how he needs to maybe improve to get, time
but like.
Speaker 4 (47:56):
He's got to come down with that.
Speaker 6 (47:57):
Ball he's got to come down with that triball From tracy.
Speaker 5 (47:59):
Body that one more playing time you come down. Without
and that's the one in my, opinion AND i agree with.
YOU i said it right there in the box and
the ball went.
Speaker 1 (48:07):
UP i was, like, oh.
Speaker 5 (48:07):
Boy in my, opinion the best ball that was thrown
all night was Tracing borgay's ball.
Speaker 6 (48:13):
To domini given the.
Speaker 4 (48:14):
Question it was a beautifully thrown.
Speaker 6 (48:17):
Ball he's got to come down with.
Speaker 2 (48:18):
It it was.
Speaker 5 (48:18):
Gorgeous it was a fantastic. Football dom's gotta come down with.
That and you can Tell donal's pretty tick top about
it because he did push.
Speaker 6 (48:25):
Ups afterwards because he knew he dropped and he made
it up on the end of.
Speaker 1 (48:29):
Round you know.
Speaker 6 (48:29):
That but but but the point, is like that speed
that he.
Speaker 12 (48:32):
Using cody Dom, parker like all the guys that remember
they overlap with missions and. Everything you see those guys
now here on the, team and he's got to make
the catch if he wants more playing. Time BUT i
just don't think in space or with these in, rounds
you can Guard Cody higgen or Dom So i'm on
Your cody, train even THOUGH i didn't say it.
Speaker 4 (48:48):
Earlier, No, No cody is a.
Speaker 6 (48:49):
Star LIKE i think.
Speaker 4 (48:51):
That that's one thing THAT i came away with AND
i knew he'd be, good.
Speaker 6 (48:55):
But but he showed.
Speaker 5 (48:56):
ME i think he can be a star this. Year,
YEAH i think he can be a star that this,
Year like and highly, utilized and we. Should if we,
don't we're missing out on a great opportunity to to
showcase one of the most dynamic players that have come
through B yu with his top, end speeding.
Speaker 4 (49:14):
Quickness even he.
Speaker 5 (49:15):
Hit THAT b button bro on that, catch you, know
litt spin. Move, now he almost he almost got out of,
it you, know talking about on the on that deep.
Perception he looked, good, baby look. Good he's, quick he's,
fast he's, nimble he's fleet of. FOOT i love me
From Cody. Hagen anything else that we.
Speaker 4 (49:30):
Learned uh from?
Speaker 5 (49:32):
This uh this game Versus Portland, State Carson ryan is
just as good of a blocker as he is a pass.
Catcher like he may be a better blocker than he
is a pass. Catcher and that's that's. Impressive he had
so many fantastic. Blocks he was awesome in the run.
Game that's gonna help a.
Speaker 1 (49:49):
Lot i'm gonna get props to Tell alfred the highest
graded de.
Speaker 4 (49:54):
Good for, him man, talent Bah bro great.
Speaker 5 (50:00):
Comments did you see when he split the double team
on that screen and made the?
Speaker 4 (50:05):
TACKLE?
Speaker 1 (50:06):
O my, lord oh, NO i did, no, no, NO
i do remember that?
Speaker 4 (50:10):
Now he was like a freaking just a bullet went
right through the double. TEAM i remember, That, BRO i
was so.
Speaker 5 (50:19):
Impressed that is not an easy thing to, do to
split two big old human beings on the outside like.
That just go with linear violence and push through and
then make the. Tackle most DB's run around, THAT i.
Speaker 1 (50:36):
Think tell him's gonna get more. Reps Come stanford telling you.
Speaker 4 (50:41):
Telling you.

Speaker 6 (52:43):
Things this man we're gonna hear.
Speaker 12 (52:46):
From we'll get into his little the postgame sound from
him had the school record fifty six yard field. Goal
Will farren is that dude. Goaded kline called him next
level cooker. Kicker excuse. Me in the first, Hour i'd, Asked,
well the question which we'll hear, About, hey what does
that mean to have that type of trust that your
(53:07):
coach is gonna row you out there in those pressure
moment situations reminder of The utah, game Asked well.
Speaker 6 (53:12):
Himself it's, like it doesn't matter where it's, at it's going.
Speaker 12 (53:14):
In, Right it's good to have this AND i bring
this up, because and this is none Against jake old
troy but when he was, kicking there were some question.
Speaker 6 (53:22):
MARKS i.
Speaker 12 (53:23):
THINK i think Fans brenda tell me if you agree
or disagree with, me had some nervousness about whether it
was going to go in or. Not With, will he's
pretty much automatic when he steps up. THERE i DON'T
i don't even watch Because i'm, like, yeah it's going.
In there's no way it. Doesn't and he tied the
field goal. Record let me correct. MYSELF a lot of
people think he broke, it but he tied the. Record
(53:45):
BUT i think he's gonna get. IT i Think ba's
gonna be in a situation where they're gonna have an,
opportunity you. Know but he tied the record for the
longest field goal, held you Know Owen. Pachmann he also
made a fifty six charter that was in two thousand
Against New. Mexico, Soh, brett your, thoughts your takeaways just
on the kick that was.
Speaker 9 (54:04):
Made, well it's funny that you bring it. Up we
didn't talk about this before, this but we. DIDN'T i
had this exact same, thought Like Jake oldroyd was, awesome
but there were times a la The baylor game when
there was a question, mark not even, concerned just like
a question.
Speaker 6 (54:21):
Mark is he gonna make this because it's a tough field?
Speaker 8 (54:23):
Goal?
Speaker 9 (54:24):
Yeah AND i THINK byu fans have been lulled into
this great spirit of optimism and almost naivety that you
When Will farrens steps. UP i, mean it's Like Steph
curry hitting a free. Throw you you're not. Worried how
many yards is? This what's his field goal?
Speaker 1 (54:43):
Range?
Speaker 6 (54:44):
Okay? Cool So Will farren's gonna kick this field?
Speaker 9 (54:46):
Goal, okay let me go scroll on my, phone see
what's going on On, instagram because, like you're not at all.
Worried there's no question in your mind whether or not
that thing's going. In and that's not just A Will
farren thing like that is all time great. Kickers most
kickers are not like. That once you get past forty,
(55:07):
five once you get past fifty, yard no matter who
the kicker, is you start thinking about it is this
guy that, Dude when you have put yourself in position
as a kicker to be money lights, out nights out
from past fifty, yards that starts to put you in
conversation for a best kicker in the country and BE nfl.
Speaker 12 (55:29):
Kicker, yeah And calinie mentioned, That and if you missed
any of that, sound you can download the first hour
after this. Segment once this is, over it'll be posted
to the podcast On, iTunes, Speaker google play About kline
call him the next level. Kicker let's get into some
of the postgame sound from the man himself that addressed
us in the. Media not surprised had to bring him
(55:50):
out when you tie a kick like, That AND i
do believe he'll have an opportunity hit a sixty. YARDER
i Think Will farren we will have that opportunity.
Speaker 6 (55:57):
Some point this.
Speaker 12 (55:57):
Season don't know if that will be at home or
on the, road BUT i believe that it definitely is Coming,
brett AND i think that he'll have. It he actually
comments on if he were to break the, record how
would he feel about that the. Opportunity let's hear from.
It let's get into question number. One take us through the.
TYING i guess setting kick Will.
Speaker 13 (56:15):
YEAH i think it's funny every time there's a big,
Kick everyone's, like, well happen, here will happen, Here And i'm,
like it's always the same process for me or if
it's one of the pats we hit, today or a
game winner or a long, KICK i go through the same.
PROCESS i approach it the same. WAY i even hit
the ball the same. Way and IF i hit the
ball pure and straight every, time then then good things.
(56:36):
Happen so it's kind of the. Extent it didn't feel
much different than a lot of the other Balls i've.
Speaker 12 (56:41):
Hit, yeah a lot of us maybe make, it and
maybe not those in the, media but a lot of
people man take us through that same ganis same. Thing
you hit it the same, way nothing, more nothing, less, calm, cool,
collective three.
Speaker 6 (56:54):
Seeds that's will.
Speaker 12 (56:55):
FAREIN i think that's important to note because every kick
bred sometimes people, well you, know make it a big
deal and he's, like not, really you, know just a normal,
process normal kick for, me even though when you start
get to that fifty plus range it gets a little.
Speaker 6 (57:07):
Difficult regardless of who the kicker.
Speaker 9 (57:10):
Is obviously we're not, kickers but my guess is if
you are, one the best thing you can possibly do
is not think about it too, much because it's imagine
similar to free throw in that nature where a lot
of it is mental and your body knows how to do.
Speaker 6 (57:28):
It it's just not messing up the muscle.
Speaker 9 (57:30):
Memory and SO i think when he gives a response like,
that it's, like, Oh, phil or will you what.
Speaker 6 (57:35):
Do you think about? This what he's?
Speaker 9 (57:37):
DUDE i JUST i just kind of go up AND
i kick the ball and it's not that deep BECAUSE
i imagine if you start to make it that, deep
then you start to freak. Out the crazy thing to
me Is Will. Farren obviously he tied the. Record you
know what else he tied Ron he Tied Portland state's
passing yards on the. Evening this is with fifty six.
(57:59):
Yards and if you want to get, technical here's a
stat of the day for. You, Technically will Kit farren's one,
kick that fifty six yarder was for more yards Than
Portland state had that on the entire, day considering theyanded
it with negative rushing. Yards So Will, farren you could,
say was more productive as a kicker than the entirety
(58:20):
of The Portland state football team brought four quarters.
Speaker 12 (58:22):
The incredibile like this as he stepped out for a.
Moment but he would love IF i Mentioned Tommy. Prass
is How tommy mentioned in the post game last YEAR
i scored more points In Kansas state and left. TRUE
i don't know how many people maybe like that, comment
BUT i thought that was just funny now that you
bring it up of a more productive day Than Portland.
State but as you, Know Portland state is due To
i'm also getting a little bit shootout for my tweet
(58:43):
ON x about the ap pole that's nor here or.
Speaker 6 (58:46):
There we're not gonna get on that tangent back to
the sound will how long with a field coat can you?
Makes on the?
Speaker 13 (58:52):
DAY i THINK i can make it from wherever the
coaches put me. OUT i feel confident right now AND
i trust that they'll put me in.
Speaker 6 (59:00):
Spots, LOOK i can kick it from. Anywhere it don't matter.
Speaker 12 (59:06):
Anywhere let's put it out, there doesn't matter it's going
IN i. Have it depends on the, DAY i mean,
yeah because sometimes if the body's not, right if the
hamstrings are a little bit you, know, tweakish maybe the
foot or, something if you're dealing with the nagging, injury it.
Depends but when he's, HEALTHY i, mean he had room to,
spare And caline mentioned that in the first segment that
he could have hit that kick from sixty five to
sixty six he had a. Bunch so it's good that
(59:30):
you Have Will farrin because now you have to put
prit excuse, me plan tam. Pran there's no such thing
as that plan FOR bau to beat you on all three.
Phases special teams picks up where it left. Off Jack
kelly had you, know the block field goal By john
that my peas face mask helmet and then takes it
to the. House if you're a, team you don't have
(59:51):
to worry about just Bo he's scoring on offense and
their defense taking it to the. House now you gotta
worry about their special teams in that. Regardless keep moving.
Forward go to question number. Three you've made eighteen in a.
Row does that come in to play it? Out when
you're stepping up to the line to kick another, kick WILL.
Speaker 8 (01:00:10):
I just go on?
Speaker 13 (01:00:11):
KICK i follow the SLOGAN i guess of being one
for one every. Time so it's not That i'm setting
a goal to be this percentage this year or to do.
This it's that this, Kick i'm one for, one and
in that situation made the long cake and it's like it's.
Great and then now we move on and you might
have to go hit another one so and it is
a kick or it's hard to live in that world
(01:00:32):
of like streaks or of. Whatever SO i don't think
about it a. Lot just wipe it and move on to.
Speaker 1 (01:00:37):
Them it's the right.
Speaker 12 (01:00:38):
Answer you can't be focusing about previous kicks or future.
Kicks you got a kick in that. MOMENT i focus
on being one for one in that moment and let
it add.
Speaker 9 (01:00:46):
UP i love the answers that we're getting spioy football
team From Will. Farrin if you listen to Bear bachmeyer
post game and he's, like what was your favorite part
of the evening and Bear, bachmeer you, Know i've just
that my offensive line blocked for. Me like everybody is
giving these perfect and NOT i shouldn't even say giving
perfect answers. There they have a perfect. Mentality they're not
(01:01:10):
they're not trying to give the right. Answers they're just
this is who they.
Speaker 6 (01:01:14):
Are this is the.
Speaker 9 (01:01:15):
Mentality, AGAIN i don't think it makes any sense for
wilfare and be, like, MAN i hope we can get to.
Nineteen hope we can get to twenty five kicks in a,
row because if you don't make the next, one it
doesn't matter how many more you kick after, that all
it matters is going for one for. One it's similar
to what we hear coaches say Like i'm not worried
about going twelve and, Oh i'm worried about being one
(01:01:37):
to oh this.
Speaker 6 (01:01:38):
Week SO i one hundred percent agree with, well smart.
Speaker 12 (01:01:40):
Kid smart. Kid you do have to focus on the.
NOW i know a lot of people sometimes don't in
the past or the. PRESENT i think sometimes maybe that's
what got The jack. O'joy remember The baily game when
you miss a couple those things happen The texas. Kicker
but WHAT i loved about The texas moment the guy
comes over and it's, like, hey don't worry about.
Speaker 6 (01:01:57):
It, Yeah, hey and the Same. Jared what do he
do even? Have do they want to really get? Me Embraced?
Speaker 12 (01:02:01):
Jake And jake was emotional because he was, like, MAN
i felt, like you, know he probably thought that he
cost his team moments in that, game could have put it.
Away but at the end of the, day that's why
it's a team. Effort you build everybody. Up it's a collective.
Thing and you see that from more. Front let's get
back to the. Questions let's go number. Four here And
Brandon gurney Of The Daily hero asked this. QUESTION i remember,
it and this is shout out to him on noticing.
(01:02:23):
This but you, Know will got a little creative on his.
Kickoff so you got a little creative on the Kickoff.
Will it looked like it was a lob you, know
lob wedge down to the seventeen yard. Line he executed
it really. Well take us to the mentality of that
and how that came.
Speaker 13 (01:02:38):
About, yeah that's Coach pepinga thrives on that kind of.
Stuff he's very creative with special teams and he's very
effective on the way he goes about. Things so that's
a kick that we've had installed for a while, now
and he's very particular about how he wants. It doesn't
need to be too, high it doesn't need to be
this or. That but given the game situation or the
(01:03:01):
scheme that the other team has for kickoff, return he
has a ball that he wants hit in a very specific.
Way SO i just do my best to go out
and practice and figure out exactly how he wants to
hit it SO i.
Speaker 4 (01:03:12):
Can go do in the.
Speaker 6 (01:03:12):
Game he's very.
Speaker 12 (01:03:13):
Particular Gay Pop Kelly papinka demands excellence on special teams
And Will farrin And sam vanderhar and everybody. Else No
parker had the, fumble, unfortunately but he demands. Excellence you,
know you got to do, that AND i THINK pk
will clean it. Up, TIGER i know ran, backwards lost some.
YARDAGE i think you'll see those things cleaned. Up but
that's why he played non conference at the, beginning right
(01:03:35):
to get all of those things. Out but back To,
will the main important thing is he's executed those kicks really.
Well they're penning opponents where they. Won and if you
think about, it WHEN i hurt that, QUESTION i went
back AND i watched the full game began BECAUSE i
always do.
Speaker 1 (01:03:46):
That watch the.
Speaker 12 (01:03:47):
Tape they Pinned Portland state nice. Like there was a
lot of times That Portland state was really put in difficult. Situations,
obviously we know It's Portland state arguably maybe the one
of the, worst you, know teams in college football this.
Year but it's gonna be very interesting in bread to
see what they do To stanford this Coming saturday and
how special teams is.
Speaker 9 (01:04:05):
Executed special teams is clearly a critical piece of THIS byu.
Team but WHAT i love even more is you see
a lot OF K pop's personality through his special. Teams
and even, more you never get the, sense ever That
Kelly papinga is just the special teams who's only trying
(01:04:26):
to coach special teams well just so that he can
get a defensive coordinator job, somewhere or just so we
can get a sexier, jobs because that's not who he.
Speaker 6 (01:04:33):
Is that's not who the S biou football team.
Speaker 9 (01:04:34):
Is Kelly papinga is obviously a guy who knows, ball
he's a guy who knows. Defense but he's also a
guy who, says, hey we can make special teams, creative
we can make. It we can throw you curveballs like
they did with this kick that pilosaking in. Particular AND
i JUST i love that because it continues to echo
the mentality of this football, team which is we just
(01:04:56):
do our, job Like i'm not worried about if the
job is the, sexiest if it's exa exactly WHAT i
want to, do if it's WHAT i grew, Up i'm
doing my. Job and if everybody does their, job if
ever he, does there one to eleven does coaches love to,
say then we will.
Speaker 6 (01:05:08):
Win and this is a perfect example of.
Speaker 1 (01:05:10):
That do you want?
Speaker 6 (01:05:11):
Eleventh and it all works out back to number.
Speaker 12 (01:05:12):
FIVE i BELIEVE i asked just, when IF i recall,
Correctly klaney, said you're a next level.
Speaker 6 (01:05:16):
Kicker what does it mean to have that trust from
your head? Coach?
Speaker 8 (01:05:19):
Will it's.
Speaker 13 (01:05:20):
Big colonne's also kind of a one for one head,
coach where like one of one where he puts in
the time to get to know us and AND i
think that speaks to him just as, much if not
more than that speaks to. Me he's a guy that
he's not bigger than anyone. Else he's gonna put me
in good. Situations and as he does, That i'll go
(01:05:41):
and execute the best of my.
Speaker 12 (01:05:43):
Ability even WHEN byu has lost games in the, past
effort's never been an.
Speaker 6 (01:05:47):
Issue AND i bring this. Up you look at The alabama,
game effort was a. Problem you love that being From
georgia and you love to see.
Speaker 9 (01:05:54):
That.
Speaker 12 (01:05:54):
Right i'm not praying On kellen De bor's, downfall But
i'm bringing up a point of when your players love, You,
YES i used that fo a, world when they're brought
into your, culture when you're here a, player Saying kline
puts more to you that sometimes maybe we put into
him that makes you want to go out and die
for that, player saying THAT i played, RUGBY i remember
going to go die for my. COACH i want to
(01:06:15):
make sure that leave it all on the. FIELD i
want to make that guy look bad or my, teammates
some of my. Brothers and you hear that From will
in that. Regard So kolani is one of. One you're
not going to get too many coaches Like. Kilani let's
you number six really. Quickly how much pride does this
program take in special? Teams, Will, yeah it's.
Speaker 13 (01:06:32):
BIG i THINK i think it speaks to a couple of.
THINGS i think it speaks to the depth that we have.
Today we were rolling through. Guys lots of guys were
getting their first plays on, KICKOFF orki off return or punt.
Return and it also speaks to the unity of our.
Team special teams is cool because you have the, offense
you have the, defense and special teams is where everybody plays.
(01:06:54):
Together so being a united team and having a lot
of depth makes it so people are ready to go and.
Perform if people are excited to go and make plays
on special, teams bright your.
Speaker 9 (01:07:07):
THOUGHTS i love what this says about this team's effort
kind of what we talked about the last, question because
if you listen To kilani in media availability and post,
Game kilanne doesn't feel like that this was a perfect,
game and it's very easy in a game Like Portland
(01:07:29):
state to overlook the. Effort but there were some effort,
issues Specifically Parker kinkston fumbling the. Ball, again it wasn't
Like Parker kinson got rocked solid on that. Play he
just wasn't necessarily finishing through the play and taking care
of the, football and again that got cleaned. Up so special,
(01:07:49):
TEAMS i think To will makes a great point that
special teams is kind of where everybody comes, together and
this team clearly takes pride in their special.
Speaker 6 (01:07:59):
Teams as we talked about K pop.
Speaker 9 (01:08:00):
EARLIER i love that It will sees this as an
opportunity for everybody to make plays, together whether your, offense,
defense or.
Speaker 1 (01:08:09):
Whatever it.
Speaker 12 (01:08:09):
Is one wrong, snap one wrong, bobble will miss assignment
and fifteen seconds can change the direction in momentum for
the other. Team you saw that last year and HOW
byu was able to do. That in regards let's go number,
seven you tied the record On. Saturday what would it
mean to You will to finally have the record of
the longest field go AT?
Speaker 6 (01:08:27):
Byu well DOES.
Speaker 13 (01:08:31):
I wouldn't say it means a ton to me because
of that kind of idea of like winning a long
kick as opposed to just wanting to put three points
on the board FOR. Byu that's kind of the MINDSET
i fall, into where IF i IF i get to
go and show off the leg and do a big,
kick that's. Great but also if IF i need to
(01:08:51):
hit something, short or IF i they don't use me
at all but we win the, Game i'm just cheering
for The cougars and that's ALL i can.
Speaker 12 (01:08:58):
Do, right, answer then don't use me in. All as
long as the team gets to. Win that's ALL i care.
ABOUT i, mean it doesn't mean too much to. Me
sure not only is that the right, answer he actually
believes that, though, like, well if we'll get the, longest
we'll go. Great he doesn't care, Great like it's about
helping The koks. Win you want these type of players
in your locker room and your, program and they got them.
(01:09:18):
All this is not Just Will. Ferren you got other
guys like this just want to make this very. Clear other,
GUYS i don't. CARE i, MEAN i don't care IF i.
Score do we win a?
Speaker 6 (01:09:25):
Game? Sure like that's.
Speaker 12 (01:09:26):
It, Like i'm pretty sure if you ASKED lj the,
question hey would have been nice getting his, Own, yeah
it'd been, Nice BUT i, mean do we? Win like
these guys don't, care and, well you don't have egos
that will change. Things they go back to That Mark
pope team Of Tenneca knight and this is not a
shot and people think it. Is BUT i remember Beating
utah on him in the court of, pounting, pouting being
upset IF i didn't get in the.
Speaker 6 (01:09:45):
Game you can't have that. Mentality got to be a team.
Speaker 9 (01:09:48):
Player AS i was listening to this, question and my guess,
is if you're listening to this on the, radio you
understand this as.
Speaker 6 (01:09:56):
Well you knew what he was gonna. Say there was
no party listening to. That there was going to, go,
oh maybe he'll be, Like.
Speaker 9 (01:10:02):
I'd love to have the. Record that would be in
the world to. Me you knew the answer was going to, Be,
uh it's not that important to. Me what's more important
is that we make the kick and that we win
the ball. Game that's a football player. Mentality it's a
football player.
Speaker 12 (01:10:13):
Mentality that was let's talk about stat segment the post
games out With Will fair and it was brought to
