Speaker 4 (01:25):
I'm doing good man? It's football season. It was fun
to have a big slate of football games this weekend,
that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
Yeah. I know you watch a lot of football.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
You try to watch it as much as you can
live you're coaching football as well. Like how much football
do you consume during the football season between coaching and
then watching film.

Speaker 4 (01:47):
Yeah, it's a lot. Because I help out on so
many teams, I'm trying to prepare as best I can
for all those games. But then just because I'm training
a lot of quarterbacks throughout the offseason, I want to
watch all of their games as well. And then, just
because I love football, I also want to catch the
games that are the big time football games. So a

(02:08):
lot of nights I have a lot of stuff on
that I've recorded that I go back and watch or
access to tape that I watch again, and then you know,
a lot of the time, Saturdays and Sunday, I mean sorry,
Sundays and Mondays are a big tape watching day as
well from the previous weekend. So but it's fun. I
love watching tape. I loved it as a player, more

(02:28):
studying opponents, and now it's watching the guys that I'm
either coaching here locally or had that I've coached across
the country.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
As it relates to college football in its entirety, what
were some of your main takeaways from the weekend from
the week of college football.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
Well, I think everybody was tuned into the Ohio State
Texas game because to have a game like that kicking
off your first big Saturday, and I know it's been
kind of the top to Texas, wasn't quite offend with
Arch and all that what everybody thought. Ohio State went
out there with a freshman, you know, retro freshman quarterback

(03:07):
and was able to go and now become the number
one team in the Country. I thought one of the
better games was the LSU Clemson game. I know that
Clemson was going into this season with really really high hopes,
and LSU was pretty dominant, especially defensively, especially late in
the game, with a lot of the things that they did,
And you know, I think those were two of the
better games. Over the weekend, I watched the Miami Notre

(03:30):
Dame game as well, saw Miami be a really good
football team. I also watched the South Carolina Virginia Tech game.
You know, there was just a lot of good football.
I think you have a lot of teams that, oh,
here's high hopes, here's a lot of expectations. Oh it
doesn't pan out.

Speaker 5 (03:44):
One thing I've always learned though, sometimes those teams that
may not get that first win really learn a lot
and then they actually become really strong teams at the
end of the season. So to me, it's going to
be really interesting to see where this Texas where this team,
where this Notre Dame team who started a freshman quarterback, Like,
who do they become as the season goes on. I

(04:06):
mean even the UCLA Utah game, Like I tuned into
that because of my relationship with Nikoly and my love
and like, oh, you know, they're talking about a doud
game for UCLA and Nico and Utah Pop.

Speaker 4 (04:16):
That's gonna mesed to see both of those teams what
they've become in the next six to seven weeks.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
As it relates to Arch Manning, I think, do you
think some of the constructive criticism is valid in his
maybe decision making his arm strength. There's a lot of
criticism being heaped on Arch right now. With the there
was a tremendous amount of hype. Look, you come in
with the last name Manning and the recruiting rankings and

(04:42):
you're essentially the number one recruit and your recruiting class,
all those things, expectations were pretty high.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
What did you make of Arch's performance?

Speaker 4 (04:50):
I mean, I think a lot of the expectations because
of the hype rolled over from his freshman year, right
being the number one recruit in the country choosing Texas.
He really didn't play all that much and he only
played sparingly against some poor teams his freshman year, So
I think it just all kind of rolled over, and
I think people wanted it to be the storyline of
him being this top player in the nation. I mean,

(05:14):
I saw some people choosing him as their heisman favorite,
and you know, a Jordan Rodgers caught a lot of
heat because he actually came out and said, how can
you say that when he really hasn't done anything? And
you know, Jordan wasn't wrong, Like you shouldn't give somebody
those type of preseason accolades without them having done something already.

(05:34):
And I think that all it was was it just
showed where he's at. He's, you know, a young quarterback
playing in a big time game against a really good defense,
a really good defensive coordinator. That's a tough spot to
be in. I think there's things that, like all quarterbacks
that are playing young, you have to work on. And
I don't want to say that he's not going to
become a really good player in college football, but from

(05:54):
what we've seen last year and this year, there is
no way that right now you can say he's in
the top five quarterbacks in the country. And so that's
just the way that it goes. And he's gonna keep
working and he's gonna, you know, Sark is gonna keep
coaching him up. And that's why I say, like, what
can this Texas team, what can he become. We don't know,
but for right now know the hype and everything did

(06:15):
not match what everybody saw on Saturday.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
Do you think they're the concerns of arm strength and
even his h his forceful way in which he tries
to create off platform and throws are valid. Are those
two criticisms valid? Do you think he I just saw
a lot of side arm action, which I don't think
he necessarily needed to employ, and some some you know,

(06:37):
you know's some question marks around his arm strength on
some of those high level throws.

Speaker 5 (06:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (06:43):
Well, I don't think he came into college football being
counted as somebody with an absolute cannon. I think that
everybody kind of knew where his arm strength was at
and they kind of said it's enough, you know, but
it's not a canon, and so, you know, I think
it just it was what it was. Like, He's out
there playing against a really good defense, and some of
those throws you would have liked to have had a

(07:04):
little bit more on it. And yes, do I think
his arm angle at times was what it you know,
came out and it didn't need to be at that like, yeah,
like it just it wasn't clean, It wasn't strong, and
that's just so far what he showed, Like, I really
haven't seen any throws yet from him in the games
that I've seen that would say, oh, this guy has
a top tier arm and you know, but the thing is,

(07:25):
you don't have to to be a really really good quarterback.
You know, the winningest quarterback in college football for a
long long time, Kellen Moore. I don't know if Kellen
can throw it over sixty yards. And quarterbacking is way
more than just arm talent. It comes down to what
you're able to see and process and decide and split seconds.
It's about accuracy, it's about resiliency, it's about so many

(07:47):
things being a leader, you know. And I get it.
That's where they say this kid's growing up around ball.
He's this bloodline, Like I get it right. The name,
the training, I know, the quarterback group that he works with,
they have nothing but high form. I'm sure there's good
things in store for arch Manny. It's just right now,
the expectations and what everybody thought and what it played out,
It's just it didn't line up, you know, And maybe

(08:10):
who knows, maybe they'll go on in absolute tear over
the next stretch and everybody will feel differently, But right now,
that was a lot on him, and the expectations were
so high, and I don't think it was valid for
that to be placed on him when he really hadn't
done much.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
John Beck on the Line, Cougar Sports one of three,
nine ninety eight point three ESPN The Fan. This segment
brought to by Odeon Men's Where Odeon menswear dot Com.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
John, Let's pivot, what did you learn? What can we learn.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
From a drubbing A completely demolition, A complete demolition of
Portland State in the sixty nine to zero victory for
the BYU Cougar's what'd you learn about this BA team?

Speaker 4 (08:46):
Well, here's one thing. When you play a team like
Portland State, you're supposed to take care of business. How
many times have we seen a team go out and
play a lower level team that's not really great and
stumble through a couple quarters or for whatever reason, the
game is like thirteen to three at halftime and everybody's
scratching their head, going, wait a second, I thought we

(09:08):
were supposed to absolutely demolish these guys. So the positive
was BYU did exactly what they were supposed to do,
you know, I think the spread was like forty four
or something like that. I mean, they did what they
were supposed to do. The offensive line was dominant the
line of scrimmage. The throws were getting out quickly to
where they needed to go. There wasn't a lot of

(09:28):
pressure on the quarterback at all while making some of
his downfield throws. The run game was set up really well.
The runners were breaking tackles, the linemen were out in
front like It looked like a very dominant performance of
what was supposed to happen when you play a Portland State.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
It's let's talk about bear Bachmeyer's performance. What did you
make of it? What did you like about it? What
would you like to see improved?

Speaker 4 (09:55):
It was good. Here's what I think is great. You
asked a freshman to come in and in his first
ever college football game. You want to set him up
with completions. You want to set him up with success.
You want to help him out in the run game.
You want to keep him upright in the past game
and at the end of it, even though there will
still be some maybe throws he would like to have

(10:17):
back or reads that he would see differently, does he
get to feel success, does he get to feel completions,
does he get to feel the team moving the football.
All of those were accomplished. You know, I would say
you probably had a handful of just very quick now
screen throws where it's just just get the ball out,
get it to a guy and let us get blockers

(10:38):
out in space. Those are guaranteed completions. He had a
few really nice dropback throws, a couple of sale routes
that he had. I love that he made some plays
kind of off script with his legs. Had a little
sprint out down in the end zone that he kind
of kept himself. Put a little move on the first
defender that came to him and was able to get
in the end zone. Had a really nice touchdown throw

(10:58):
in the red zone off of a little key paction
to a corner out in the back of the end zone.
Very decisive throw as the corner tried to fall off like.
It was good stuff. It was exactly what you would
hope for for a young quarterback because you always sit
down and you say it's going to be about development,
and yes, there's going to be times that his development
and growth is going to happen through adversity, through some

(11:20):
disappointment and through some failures. That's just bound to happen
when you play a young quarterback. But let's start him
off on the right foot. Let's let him feel some
positives and some good and that was accomplished. And to
go out in your first start as a freshman and
to be able to feel what five touchdowns feels like
and a big win, that's awesome.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
Were there any other players offensively or defensively that stood
out to you in this game, someone that maybe you
weren't expecting to stand out and they showcased their abilities
and could be a rising star within the offense or
defensive rooms.

Speaker 4 (11:54):
I don't know if it's somebody that I didn't expect.
I've heard good things, you know, Carson Ryan, I heard
so many good things about It's great to see Chase
out there running around healthy. You know, you get to
see Cody Hagen make a big play. That's like, did
I say his name right, It's Cody Hagen. Cody, Yeah, yeah,
you got to see him make a big play. I

(12:15):
thought LJ looked very strong running the football, running through tackles.
I mean it was solid, like the old line was dominant.
I mean I think that from the names that I've
heard buzzing throughout the offseason and buzzing throughout camp, they
showed I'm going to sound like Coach Green for the Cardinals,
they are who we thought they are, oh like right,
like yeah, like it was like that's who we expected

(12:37):
them to be.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (12:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
It's hard for me to kind of look at this
win and take away a whole lot from it.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
I do think one of my main.

Speaker 3 (12:48):
Takeaways in this game is that that Will Farren, he's
he is at kilane stated he's the next level kicker.
That dude is an NFL kicker, right, I mean he
looks the part. I mean, he's got the leg, and
he's got the actor and he's got the stoicism.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
Yeah. That's the thing too, is the poise, right, the
poise to just come in and knock stuff down, you know.
And I'm going to kind of utilize his story, right,
some of the things that he was able to have
happen for him that kind of set the stage for confidence, right,
to be able to have some of those big kicks

(13:23):
that he's had. That just sets the stage for the
rest of the way. And that's why I think for
a young quarterback now kind of chasing that back to
bear of like, that's why you want some good things
to happen early. One of the most difficult things for players,
especially quarterbacks, is when their initial beginnings have a lot
of difficulties sometimes because of the situation. I've seen a

(13:47):
lot of talented players go in and the situation is
very difficult and there's far more placed on them, and
their mistakes feel magnified because of the situation that they're
playing in, and that's difficult in the beginning. It's why
you see sometimes qbs in the NFL where people say, oh,
he didn't pan out, or you know, this didn't work out,
Like people don't realize a the positive of having good

(14:10):
things happen early. And I call that lift off. When
you're able to have lift off early and you're already
off the ground, Now some other things can happen you're
already off the ground. Other times, in difficult situations, that
person just feels like as soon as they get off
the ground, they're brought right back down to it and
you don't get that lift off. And then what happens

(14:31):
is people just took page on that player. And so
it's great to see some of these guys have such
great beginnings, and yes, I think from a talent standpoint,
Will is absolutely going to be an NFL guy.

Speaker 3 (14:43):
A couple other things that I noticed, and you mentioned
Cody Hagen. I feel like Cody should end up being
a high profile target in obviously the past game, but
also in the run game with these end to rounds,
these jets.

Speaker 1 (14:59):
He runs hard.

Speaker 3 (15:00):
You know, you want to utilize that that skill set
as much as you can.

Speaker 1 (15:04):
What do you see What type of role do you
see Cody Hagen ka Hagen having this year?

Speaker 4 (15:10):
Well, I think he can grow into a variety of them.
I've heard so many good things coming out of camp
about him. You know, speed was always one, but I
heard some of these really good catches that he was making.
To see him have an end around where just like
you said that, I like the type of run. You know,
what we're going to find out is what all of
this looks like when we start jumping into Big twelve play.

(15:35):
You know, I don't know the overall position Stanford is
going to be in during that game as a team,
or what they're going to look like. ECU saying thing,
I think the hope is that Dyu just continues to
grow through these games and then we get to see, okay,
now let's see what it really looks like in the
conference against conference opponents. I watched TCU last night and

(15:58):
there's you know, they're they're going to be a strong opponent.
And you look at Texas Tech and some of the
stuff they did, they're going to be a strong opponent.
You look at some of the teams that BYUS wanting
to battle to be in the lead and the top
of this conference to potentially play in the conference championship.
There's some pretty good teams that you know, as BYU
goes through conference play, we find out, okay, this is

(16:20):
what this team really is. And then that's where people
can step into some roles because it's always about maximizing
all of the weapons that you have and utilizing everybody
in every strength that they can bring to the team.
And going back to Cody, he's going to be able
to need to be used in every possible way he can.

Speaker 3 (16:39):
John, going back to bear Bachmeyer, the offense, how they executed,
they were on time, right, they were on page, They
got what they wanted, it seemed on every single drive.
Just dominance everywhere, and so they have their first test
this week versus Stanford. Stanford's coming off a bi week.

(17:00):
You're familiar with Stanford, You're familiar with what they're doing.
I know they have an interim head coach, obviously, Andrew
Lux the GM there. He's he's, you know, trying to
instill a new culture. Bear Bachmeier was just there and
he left for maybe greener pastors at Brigham. But give
me your synopsis on on you know what BYU's offense

(17:21):
is going to come into contact with versus Stanford that
maybe they didn't come into contact with this week, versus
Portland State.

Speaker 4 (17:30):
You know, that's a tough one because I only watched
a little bit of the game that Stanford played against Hawaii,
And the one thing I don't know is I don't
know who's playing for Stanford that's a returning starter and
who has been elevated because of the exodus of a
lot of players. A lot of players left that program.
And I just know because of conversations that I had

(17:52):
with people during that period of time where a lot
of players are leaving, you know, Bear being one of
them that I had conversations with of you know, of
Stanford really trying to do everything they could to keep players.
There were so many conversations going on with the head
coach and Andrew Luck of trying to get players to stay.
And even after those conversations, they lost a lot. So

(18:13):
I'm not sure the caliber of you know, these might
be guys that they weren't anticipating as starters that they're
having to play as starters because the other starters left.
That's the part where I don't totally know. I haven't
watched them on tape yet. It's just going to be
interesting to see. I just know any time a program
has gone over that type of turnover and you're exchanging

(18:35):
players and more players are having to step up that
are young. Usually the more youth and inexperience you have
on the football team that are on the field, the
more mistakes happen. It's a greater chance of instead of
having ten players on time doing what they're supposed to
do and maybe one makes a mistake, it's eight players
on time doing what they're supposed to do and three
making mistakes. And when that type of stuff happens defensively, offensively,

(18:59):
specially teams and makes it really difficult to have consistent
success to hold on to a drive to continue to
get first downs, to keep an offense off the field
defensively because you're just you're giving up too much because
of mistakes.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
Is the talent level at Stanford though, good enough to
be by us the question?

Speaker 4 (19:19):
Right.

Speaker 3 (19:20):
I know they have some issues in the coaching staff,
and you know they're trying to maybe reinstill a little
bit of confidence in this team coming off a loss.
But I feel like the recruiting rankings over the years,
even though there has been attrition, has been good.

Speaker 4 (19:36):
Yeah. I mean you would think that Stanford does have
the poll. I know a lot of athletes that they've
had their site set on Stanford forever, despite the situation
of the coaching staff. It's where they dream to go.

Speaker 5 (19:49):
You know.

Speaker 4 (19:50):
The one thing I will say is Stanford usually always
pulls very very high quality individuals from strong families, and
you know those guys can the good football players. They're
like very committed. So I mean, look, I don't think
it's going to be a pushover. I don't think it's
going to be a sixty nine to zero game. They may,
and they should give far more of a fight and
far more of a challenge. What that will look like,

(20:12):
I don't think anybody totally knows what would.

Speaker 3 (20:15):
You like to see Bear Bogmeier improve upon from this
performance versus Portland State? What would you like what do
you think is going to be tested by versus Stanford?

Speaker 4 (20:26):
Oh man, that's tough because, like you know, when you
when you watch the tape, are there some throws that
maybe could be a little bit more accurate? Yes? You know,
are there some plays that you know, like tell me
what you saw right there? And why did you fill
the ball had to go here? Okay? Yes, But at
the same time, he threw eleven passes, completed the majority

(20:47):
of them, and in the run game ere everything will
worked out good. So I don't know if it's as
much about like what to improve upon on this game
to the next of just where does his continued development
need to happen at the collegiate game, it's going to be.
What did not really show up in this game is
critical downs, meaning if it's a tight ball game, how

(21:10):
are you performing on those critical downs? What is your
decision making? Like if you're only you know, it's tied,
you're only up by three, you're down by three those
critical second and third downs, and maybe even a fourth down.
The nice thing about Baar, and I've said this before
on the show and to people that ask me, he
has played so much football over the last three years

(21:30):
with him at the helm, leading his team in critical
downs and situations. I've watched that kid, you know, with
five minutes left in the fourth quarter, take his team
to a go ahead touchdown, and then the other team
marches down the field, scores, and then he's got to
go do it again. I've watched him do that time
and time again. He did it twice back for back
years against our team at San Clementy. But I've watched

(21:51):
him on tape do it time and time again. So
the good news is he's had a lot of experience
doing that. It's now, does this show up this Stanford week?
Does it show up this ECU week? Because what we
know is it's going to show up when we hit
big twelve play. So whatever situations arise that will feel
like that in these next few games. It's going to

(22:11):
better prepare him for when those conference games are happening.

Speaker 3 (22:15):
John Beck here into Keeping up with the Cougars, brought
to you by Odion Men'swearodion Menswear dot Com Final thing
before we let you go. John Cougar's in the pros.
Who are you looking forward to watching? Who do you
think could have a nice season in the NFL in
twenty twenty five?

Speaker 4 (22:33):
Oh man, You know, it's tough because at this time
of year, coming out of the college stuff, right like,
it seems like there's so much of a focus this
opening weekend on all these college guys, and I've been
watching so much tape of them, I haven't even begun
to look across the board and say, all right, where
are some of those BYU guys at that maybe aren't
even offensive players, but are just BYU guys Like I

(22:56):
know Blake, Blake feeling got hurt because I was talking
to his dad the other day. It's to see guys
go down. I know we've talked on the show before
about Zach Wilson in the position that he's in as
the two in Miami, and if something were to happen
to Tua, you know, do I feel like that could
be a good situation for Zach? I do you know
you look around to see what other guys are in situations.
I think Taysom Hill is still coming off of an injury.

(23:19):
I think that Kyle van Noy is in a good
situation still playing, and you know, his team can do
some really really good things, and he's been able to
really capitalize the back end of his career on things.
You know. It's just it's interesting how my mind. You know,
that's a question, Ben that I could have been better
prepared for, just because of the situation that I'm in
and mentally. But you know what, I can't sit there
and give the long list of guys that are everywhere

(23:41):
in the NFL. But once that NFL season starts and
then I start paying attention to where those guys are
out and what's happening, then I'm probably more better prepared
to give a better answer for that one on this show.

Speaker 3 (23:51):
Now, John, I always appreciate our time together and can't
wait to see what happens in this twenty twenty five
BYU football season. I do think this year with a
true freshman quarterback, yes, with a supporting cast that is
robust defensively, special teams, and even offensively, I.

Speaker 1 (24:08):
Think they have a good supporting cast.

Speaker 3 (24:10):
I think this is the year that a Rod makes
his money a bit, you know what I mean. He
lost his redshirt senior that went over to lane had
a nice performance that was unfortunate. Right now, he's got
to win with a true freshman. I think this is
one of the biggest challenges that a Rod has faced
as a play caller. I can't wait to see how
he navigates it.

Speaker 4 (24:31):
Yeah, you know. The good thing is I look back
to the Keyton Slovas year, right like, nobody was able
to anticipate the struggles that we were going to have
in the run game and in protection. Nobody could anticipate
the number of third and longs. It was insane how
many times Yu was in third and eight plus that

(24:52):
is so so difficult as an offensive coordinator to call
games in those environments. And so you know, right now,
BYU is healthy, DYU has the opportunity to roll and
to have that around your young quarterback helps a lot.
And so my hope is that all those guys stay
healthy for a Rod, because with a young quarterback but

(25:13):
healthy guys around him, you can still do so much.
And I've always loved Arod's creativity. When the run game
is rolling, he does a really good job, especially in
the red zone, of some really creative plays. I think
that people if they really knew the subtleties that he
comes up with in certain situations and capitalizes on some
of the things that he picks up on defensively and

(25:35):
some of their rules. He does a really good job
of those things. And so I'm looking forward to that.
And it's funny then because of that question, and then
you gave me a little bit of time as you
were talking about the next question, I started thinking about
some of those YU guys. I started thinking about, like
Fred Warner and San Francisco of GHAM looking for a
big bounce back year, right, Like San Francisco is a
really good ball club that had some struggles because of

(25:55):
injuries last year. Fred's arguably the best linebacker in pro football.
So you know, I'm sure expect him a big year.
We got Puca coming back, you know, and I hope
Max Stafford can be healthy. This is going to be
his final run probably as a professional, and you know,
I want nothing more than Matt and the Rams to
have a great season, and you know Puka is going
to be a huge, huge part of that. So those

(26:17):
are just a couple of guys off the top of
my head. As you were like talking, I'm like, you know,
those guys are on some really good ball clubs that
could potentially do some really good things. Now they're in
the same same division, but truth potentially really really good
football teams and guys that might be able to have
some some big years.
