Speaker 3 (01:51):
Brett ben Crittle caught up with Emerson Goalman, a guy
pushing to be QB three. You wanted to know who
QB two was, Aaron Rodders told us in the first
hour in the nitty gritty who that was? But Trason
and Emerson had an or next to the name. So
let's get caught up with the freshman out of bountifall,
the player of the year last year, just got called
(02:12):
to his mission on to Brazil. Let's hear from Emerson
golemn interview with Ben Critical from yesterday.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
All right, we got.
Speaker 5 (02:19):
Emerson Goleman BYU quarterback Emerson, how the heck are you?
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Man?
Speaker 4 (02:22):
Thanks for let me interview you.
Speaker 6 (02:24):
Doing well, doing well, It's been awesome.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
Okay, Well tell us Emerson, you're one of the quarterbacks
in the room.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
How has it been thus far at b YU. When
did you arrive at BYU?
Speaker 7 (02:33):
Yeah, so I moved down here like three days after
I graduated the end of May. Trey get as soon
as possible, And it's been awesome. I've loved being around
the other quarterbacks, and they're all really good dudes and
obviously great quarterbacks, and been able to learn a lot
from them, and I've honestly loved every moment of it.
Speaker 5 (02:49):
So I know, during spring it was almost like you
were taking maybe a half day in high school with Bountiful, right,
and you were able to maybe at least come down
and watch practices and try to associate with the program
that you had committed.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
Is that correct?
Speaker 7 (03:00):
Yeah, So I I cleared out my schedule so every day,
like at lunchtime, I would drive down to Provo and
watch spring ball and take notes and start getting a
feel of the offense. And I think the biggest thing
was just seeing how things are around, see how the
quarterbacks operate.
Speaker 6 (03:14):
And it was awesome to build it.
Speaker 7 (03:16):
They let me just come in and Matt was so
good to me, Matt Mitchell and helped me get a
get my feet wet a little bit before moving down.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
So well, thus far, I think you've been uh to me.
Speaker 5 (03:29):
As I've watched faul camp and the practices that the
media has been able to watch, I think you've shown
quite well for a true freshman. What feedback has Coach
a Rod and Coach Mitchell given you through this process?
Speaker 6 (03:41):
Yeah, I think they've they've I mean, they've been phenomenal.
They I love.
Speaker 7 (03:45):
Playing in this offense has been amazing, like way, I mean,
I knew it was gonna be awesome, but it's been
It's been so much fun and the way everything schemed
up and they do such a great job of getting
the whys behind everything, really going through the thought process
so we can get all that done in the meeting
rooms and so we can come out and play free.
Speaker 6 (04:02):
And so it's they do.
Speaker 7 (04:05):
They do such a good job, and it's been a
privilege to work with them, and they really do know football,
so it's been great.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
Well, how how impressed I've been with you.
Speaker 5 (04:14):
I was surprised not to see you get any playing
time versus Portland State, but Killani clarified in the post game, Hey,
we want to conserve Emerson's red shirt. Were you a
little bit disappointed that you didn't get to go out
there and play some bolvers Portland State?
Speaker 7 (04:26):
Yeah, I mean, I'm I always want to play and compete.
I'm a big competitor at heart, Like you won't meet
anyone more competitive than me.
Speaker 6 (04:32):
But it was it was awesome to be a part of.
Speaker 7 (04:34):
It was great to see what cold then we got
in there with Tracon indicated, and I was happy for.
Speaker 6 (04:39):
Them and and all.
Speaker 7 (04:41):
I think patience is important and I'll be ready when
my opportunity comes, and uh, but it was great to
see my my teammates go out there and play so well.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
Going back to your recruitment.
Speaker 5 (04:49):
You're one of the best quarterbacks in the state if
you think you want to state championship, and I think
you were a five D player of the year if
I'm not mistaken, So you were a little bit under recruited.
I think underrated. How did that kind of that that
that recruiting process occur from your standpoint, Like, give me
your perspective on how that all went down with so
much productivity, especially your senior year.
Speaker 7 (05:10):
Yeah, it really drove me crazy at times, but uh,
because I felt like I had a really good year
and I knew I could compete or beat out anyone.
Speaker 6 (05:19):
In the high like in high school.
Speaker 7 (05:20):
Ranks, and uh, but it did come late, and I
think it took a lot of trust. And my whole
mentality during the season was like, I fi, I only
going to play high school.
Speaker 6 (05:30):
Fotball once and if.
Speaker 7 (05:32):
I want a state championship, you'll all take care of itself.
And that's what I told my coaches and my teammates,
and and we won state and then I I still
didn't get anything for like another month, So it was
it was a stressful time for sure, but I but
at the end of the day, like I think having
a chip on your shoulder is a really really good
thing and staying humble super important.
Speaker 6 (05:51):
And and I ended up where I wanted to be.
Speaker 7 (05:53):
There's nowhere else in the country I want to play for,
and so I can't be I can't.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
I can't complain who was involved in that recruitment.
Speaker 5 (05:59):
Who who were some of the teams that finally reached
out to you and started to show interest and who
you Who were you ultimately deciding between once you made
the commitment to bu Yu.
Speaker 6 (06:07):
Yeah, so it was mostly by U and Utah State.
It was really interesting.
Speaker 7 (06:10):
So it was a it was an interesting year for
BYU for Utah Sports, just with staff change at Utah
on offense and obviously the Utah State coaching staff.
Speaker 6 (06:17):
Changed, and but I heard a.
Speaker 7 (06:20):
Lot of contact with Bronco men in hall and it
was a cool experience for me just because growing up
being such a big BYU fan, I love Bronco mental.
I mean, his his biography is up in my room
above my bed, and I love the program he he runs,
and so it was really cool experience to get to
know him, and nothing but good things to say about them.
But at the end of the day, like I, Uh,
(06:41):
if anyone's gonna believe in myself, it needs to be
it needs to be me. And so I I never
could have lived with myself if I didn't fulfill my dream.
Speaker 6 (06:47):
And come play at Uyu.
Speaker 5 (06:48):
So so, if I'm not mistaken, initially it was just
a preferred walk on spot, right that you that you
ended up taking rather than taking a scholarship. So betting
on yourself, uh, seems to be something that's in your
your core philosophy internally.
Speaker 7 (07:04):
Yeah, So I came in on a preferred walk on
and that was one of the biggest things. Like some
people in my ear like what are you doing? Like
like Utah State wants you more or whatever. And but
so it was super cool at the beginning of fall
camp to be put on full scholarship and not as
much that it doesn't really matter, but it does. It
means a lot, and it shows that the coaches believe
(07:24):
in you. And and so, like I said, like all
I knew all I needed was a foot in the door.
Speaker 6 (07:29):
And then I think working hard can get you anywhere.
Speaker 5 (07:34):
So what number are you gonna be wearing if you
do end up trotting on the field, so that we
can see.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
Sixteen number sixteen? Did they give that one to you?
Or did you get to choose those?
Speaker 6 (07:42):
They just gave it to me, But I'm happy with it.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
So yeah, did what number did you wear in high school?
Speaker 7 (07:46):
Four for Taysom Hill? So I was I was a
big taste. Taysom Miill was my hero and so growing
up I didn't get to play talk football till sixth grade,
and so my parents didn't want me to get injured,
and so I always knew like when I when I
got to play to I was gonna pay four, And
so I wore four all through high school. But LJ
looks pretty good in four. So I can wait, I
can wait my turn.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
Have you met Taste them yet?
Speaker 2 (08:08):
I have not.
Speaker 7 (08:08):
I've met a lot of guys here, like a lot
of YU legends, but I have not met Taystem So
I'm one day.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
Yeah, I'm sure he'll be around here shortly. You'll be
able to meet him soon.
Speaker 5 (08:17):
What what skill set do you feel like you provide
to the quarterback.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
Room that's maybe a little bit different or differentiating.
Speaker 7 (08:23):
Yeah, I think I think some of my biggest assets
would be my speed. And then also I think I
do a good job staying poised, and uh, I'm pretty fearless.
Speaker 6 (08:35):
Like I don't really get to I try not to
get to.
Speaker 4 (08:39):
Rattle.
Speaker 7 (08:39):
I try not to think too much about the the
moment and just like I try to be in the
moment and not think about too much about the consequences
and play free and and make sure.
Speaker 6 (08:47):
I'm a big believer in doing all.
Speaker 7 (08:48):
The thinking in the meeting rooms and pre snaps so
you can play smoothly and fast and confidence.
Speaker 5 (08:54):
So did you do any of your athletic testing here
at b YU were able to get test? Did on
your speed, your agility, your jumping ability?
Speaker 7 (09:02):
We do tons of testing, but it's all kind of like, uh,
splits and explosiveness, and so it's been all they do.
Speaker 6 (09:09):
They do a phenomenal job.
Speaker 5 (09:10):
So I was told that you had, you know, roughly
like a forty inch vertical.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
Is this true?
Speaker 2 (09:15):
In high school?
Speaker 6 (09:16):
I had a thirty eight inch standing vertical at a
Nike camp. It was the highest in the camp.
Speaker 7 (09:20):
But I haven't tested like a true We do fourth plates,
but it's a little different.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
So sure, so pretty explosive then, And have you ever
tested out your forty time?
Speaker 6 (09:29):
In high school? I was a four to six four
to six three. It was the fastest ever in I like,
you're faster than I'm a lot faster now, So I've.
Speaker 4 (09:36):
Gotten a little bit bigger, faster, stronger since those days.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Right.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (09:40):
What did you make of the offensive output versus Portland State?
Speaker 4 (09:43):
What stood out to you? What did you like about it?
Who did you like?
Speaker 8 (09:46):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (09:47):
Game, I thought all around, it was a phenomenal game
a play.
Speaker 6 (09:50):
I love the game plan. It's been so fun.
Speaker 7 (09:52):
I love learning the offensive camp and stuff, but now
being able to be a part of the game plans
for each week.
Speaker 6 (09:56):
I really loved it. And I thought bare play phenomenal.
Speaker 7 (09:59):
I thought everyone, not just the starters, but the twos
and threes that went in all took that moment and
played really well. And I mean there's guys all across
the board that played super well. I thought bar did
a great job of being fluid and making some really
good plays. And I mean, he's a gamer and it's
fun fun to watch him play so well.
Speaker 5 (10:16):
What do you like about Bear's skill set that you
think maybe set him apart from the other quarterbacks in
the room in order to become QB one.
Speaker 7 (10:22):
Yeah, I think I mean all the quarterbacks are phenomenal,
And I think some of the stuff that Bears makes
him so special is he's just such a fluid athlete,
and he plays so free, and he can make plays
off of multiple platforms, and he has a really pure throw,
and so it's been awesome to learn from.
Speaker 6 (10:40):
Him and the other guys. So he's super impressive.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
Bear. I understand you just got your mission call. Where
have you've been called to serve.
Speaker 6 (10:45):
Brazil Sa Paulo Interlagos mission?
Speaker 4 (10:48):
So congratulations?
Speaker 5 (10:49):
Anyone in your family that has served in served a
mission or served in South America and in the region.
Speaker 7 (10:55):
Yeah, so my dad served in California and my older
brother served in Thailand. He got back, but then my
uncle served in juistafora in Brazil, so I wasn't expecting.
I speak Spanish, so I was a little surprised. But
I've what I've heard is I'll be able to pick
up Portuguese pretty quick.
Speaker 6 (11:12):
So I'm excited.
Speaker 7 (11:14):
And but for now, I'm trying to be where my
feet are while while still preparing for my mission.
Speaker 6 (11:19):
But I don't want to waste this fall, wile here
and make the most of it.
Speaker 4 (11:23):
What are you studying?
Speaker 5 (11:23):
It be?
Speaker 4 (11:24):
What you're right now.
Speaker 5 (11:24):
I know you're getting into probably the pre res etca
about what classes you've been taking.
Speaker 6 (11:27):
Mostly just generals right now. So it's been pretty good.
Speaker 7 (11:30):
I I mean today I had Biology University, one on
one Humanities that was it today.
Speaker 6 (11:36):
So but it's pretty easy.
Speaker 7 (11:37):
I feel like the hardest part is just making sure
I find time to get homework done.
Speaker 6 (11:41):
But but I'm excited. It's great to be on campus.
Speaker 5 (11:43):
And I by you so yeah, I heard too the
grape point you had like a four point zero GPA
and I did you have like a thirty act or
something like that coming out of high school?
Speaker 7 (11:51):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (11:51):
I got a thirty four thirty four. Yeah.
Speaker 7 (11:55):
My mom did such a good job of pushing me
in high school and helping me see a vision for myself,
and as she pushed me to study really hard, especially
for the act, and so a.
Speaker 6 (12:06):
Lot of good support from them.
Speaker 5 (12:07):
So give a shout out to mom and dad the family.
What do you love about being a part of the
Galment family?
Speaker 7 (12:12):
Oh, I mean, I couldn't ask for better parents and
siblings I love. I mean, some of my highs of
my week is going up to Bountiful on Sundays and
playing some games in the yard with them, whether it
be cornhole or I have an awesome family. We're all
so close and really value my relationship with my siblings
and my parents.
Speaker 6 (12:30):
So it's been awesome. Having my brother back from his mission.
Speaker 7 (12:32):
I get a room with him down here and in Provo,
and it's been it's been so special.
Speaker 6 (12:36):
So it is special.
Speaker 5 (12:38):
Why should Cougar Nahould go out and support you guys
on Saturday versus Stanford?
Speaker 7 (12:41):
I think I think great things are coming for BYU.
I think when you do things the right way off
the field, and good things happen. So I'm excited for
for what's to come this year, and hopefully we can
build off of our win last week and stay humble
and hungry.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
Right, yes, indeed, one last thing? What do you like
about a Rods Often.
Speaker 5 (13:00):
That was that attracted you to it when you were
getting recruited and you know you took it the PWO
with the hope of getting a scholarship, but.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
You were bought into the program and the and the scheme.
Speaker 7 (13:08):
I imagine, Yeah, I love the misdirection like it's so
we run a lot of plays, but we run not
as many as the defenses probably think because we know
how to run a million different looks, million different plays
out of a thousand looks, and so it's really hard
for teams to understand to see, like especially our ballcarriage,
Like our play action game is second.
Speaker 6 (13:28):
To none, and we always have there's a lot of creativity.
Speaker 7 (13:32):
And I think everyone saw that on last Saturday with
the Worldly Bird reverse that worked out pretty nice to
Cody and stuff like that. They're they really I couldn't
ask for a better offense to plan, and so it's
been awesome. And the blending of QB and the run
game and then play action, it's it's really awesome.
Speaker 5 (13:51):
So Emerson Glandladies and Gentlemen. Number sixteen, yep, all right,
there you have it.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
Number sixteen wanted to be number four. Taysom Hill was
his hero growing up. That stuck out to me the first,
the former Cougar. I just wrote that down. I said, wow,
you know he wore that his parents don't want them
getting hurt. I just thought that was the need to
Taste inspired a lot of qbs, you know, a lot.
You look at that, I mean, you compare bear to
taste not necessarily in like stature because Taystom's ripped.
Speaker 2 (14:19):
But in terms of like maybe numbers, you're doing that role.
Speaker 3 (14:23):
Size size what yeah, Sizeman And when I say size people,
it's around. He's not saying size. And I'm like, I'm
not talking about definition of body time, but it's rare
for a quarterback quad here Bruce Barnum Sandar like that
is all I'm gonna say in Numbergard going medieval.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
But anyway, but yeah, humble kid, very humble kid.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
Likes a Rod's offense, a lot of misdirection defense, thinks
to run a lot more plays than normally what they do.
Took the p w O route, really wanted to be here,
said he went up to Utah State, talked to Bronco
and said, no, not for me. You know, none against it.
And Moronco is a great coach. He just looked at
all of that staffing change. When they happen, Brett, you
and I both know when they happen, it's probably gonna
(15:04):
end up somewhere else. You've seen a lot. Look at
the Stanford l J. Martin hes dom obaa, multiple people,
not just what happens. So you're happy that if you're
a BA fan, you got Emerson on the side, Nice Beale,
can throw, can scoot Bono's mission rooming with his brother.
So I'm a fan of this kid and I really
(15:25):
root for him.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
He'll he'll leave. I think in January is when he's going.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
You know, he commented greatly on bear Off throwing on
platform throws both. So Emerson is a future quarterback in
this In this room, you have to like, well what
you see out of Emerson gom and your takeaways.
Speaker 8 (15:43):
Yeah, I was really happy to hear that they're trying
to preserve his red shirt, and I think that says a.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
Lot about Klannie.
Speaker 8 (15:49):
I think it says a lot about Emerson that he's
willing to listen and be like, look, would it be
awesome for him to get in and get time.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
Sure, for his young as he is, that would be awesome.
Speaker 8 (15:58):
But I think for or for him and for Klanne
to say, look, let's look further down the road. There
may be a game later in the season when we
need you, not when it's just fun to have you.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
There will be games later in your career what we
will need you.
Speaker 8 (16:13):
You will be needed and it won't just be a
oh it'll be fun to see Emerson play today.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
I think that says so much about.
Speaker 8 (16:19):
The maturity of this young man that because he could
just he could go along with that and still be
upset and be like, Wow, I can't believe they didn't
put me in.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
That's that is. There's not a single guy on this
team who is about them.
Speaker 8 (16:32):
Every single guy that we hear interviews from, they're all
about the team.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
They're all about being bought in on BYU, about.
Speaker 8 (16:38):
The scheme that they're playing in, whether it's defense with
j Hill, whether it's Emerson Goalman being bought on this
scheme with a Rod And what did he say, the
a million different looks out of a thousand different plays
or whatever.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
It was like, these guys are intelligent.
Speaker 8 (16:54):
They're bought in on the team irrespective of how long
or how little they may have been here. And that
is entire entirely the personality of Emerson Goleman.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
So no one cares about this, but shout out to
Isaiah Glasker and Peyton Collins. Looks like the lovely couple
finally went ig official. So I know that has nothing
to do with the segment, but I am pontificated looking
at everything. If he didn't know that gotta have future Cougars.
I mean the McKenzie twins, look at them. Hey, you
gotta keep the athletes in the family. Strong, loyal, strong
(17:26):
and true. Auld Bau anyway, but very humble young man
Emerson preserving the red shirt, which is nice.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
They've said that because that's a guy you're gonna need.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
You know, you don't know what's gonna happen with the
future Rider Lions, right, and when I mean the future,
he's coming. But if something were to happen injury wise,
get dinged up, you want to have a guy that
can come in take over to your backup guy. You
have no idea. So Emerson's in the room. Good at
preserving the red shirt. This kid has a lot of talent.
Is gonna be a good college football quarterback. I believe
Riley Jensen was the one that even said that first,
(17:56):
that he's got a he's got a future, or it
was Gary Shotty.
Speaker 2 (17:59):
Actually mighty one those jo I'm gonna have to go
back and check tape.
Speaker 3 (18:01):
Anyway, that was your Cougar Inside Report that was brought
to you by big otires.
Speaker 2 (18:05):

Speaker 3 (18:12):
He is your guy, located at seven forty eight East
State Road in American Fork. It's not just tires, it's
the one stop shot for all things related to get
your oil change. I just got mine done. Get your breaks.

Speaker 3 (18:34):
Let's get into a little and Drew gentry sound on
the flip side, don't you say, Brett, Let's get more

that will be between these two. Stanford leaves a series

uh just tote as well, both of those, but that
will come later in the third hour. Gonna get into
some Andrew Gentry sound here this second. It's gonna be
brought to you by the Utah Advocates Injury A turn,
that's right guys, so Bau fans, you need to know

Speaker 3 (20:15):

twenty four to seven three sixty five.
Speaker 2 (20:25):

the injury attorneys at the Advocate no cost consolations. You'll
never pay a dime out of pocket while the advocates
work on recovering the compensation you deserve. All right, without
further do Brett, Let's get into it, Andrew Gentry, this
(20:52):
is a guy that transferred from Michigan to BYU.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
Was a part of that national championship team.
Speaker 3 (20:58):
So he's a national champion even though he was dinged up,
was coming back from an injury of Liz Fronk injury,
which is a very difficult injury to come back from.
That's not just an injury that you can just look up.
It's not like a soft tissue injury, you know, a
growing or a hamstring or a shoulder ac joint. That's
a big time injury. Not a lot of people are
(21:18):
able to come back and perform at a high level.
But Andrew was in fall camp, looked good off fall camp,
and has been healthy ever since then, so you really
haven't looked back. So shout out to the BAU strength
the conditioning staff on getting him right, getting him back
to tip top shape, because that is a future NFL
draft picked. In my opinion, both him and Isaiah jodd
(21:41):
I think we're playing at the next level. I mean
Isaiah Joddall was rated by a Pro Football Focus as
one of the highest graded offensive linemen.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
So will Andrew Gentry be a future pick? I believe so.
Speaker 3 (21:52):
And I think as the season goes on, he's just
going to get better and better. I think he had
a pancake in that Portland State game, but the game
again Stanford will tell us a lot more.
Speaker 2 (22:01):
We're gonna go question by question here. This is from
yesterday's media availability.
Speaker 3 (22:05):
Let's start with number one, Andrew, What did you do
last weekend that you want to bring to Stanford?
Speaker 9 (22:13):
Yeah, I think, speaking from an offensive perspective and an
offensive line perspective, we use a physical game. We moved
the ball well, obviously ran the ball well, and you know,
I think the better we can run the ball, the
more pressure it takes off the offense as a whole.
Right when you have that, So I think just consuming
the run game, continuing the physicality, but then also the execution.
I feel like we executed a high level. Always things
to clean up, but I felt like we knew what
(22:34):
we were doing. We were on the right guys most
of the time, and when you're doing that, it's gonna
be hard to lose games. So I think, yeah, again,
physical play and execution will be big going into this week.
Speaker 3 (22:43):
He got to be physical, right, Brett. I think you
would agree Stanford. Although it's Stanford, it doesn't matter that
they lost to Hawaii. It's still a P fourteen. It's
a good program, gonna be a well coached team. You
heard it from defensive players. We've heard it from sound
from follow tells out to while you heard it from
tenn a Wall. Yeah, they made some mistakes during Week zero,
that hail, you know, first week of football. It's a
program that you can't overlook. You can't take lightly. You're
(23:04):
two and one all time against him. Excuse me, they're
two and one against you all time. Last time he
beat me at Jaron Hall, Hinkler or Pazi. You had
a pretty good team. You got a better team, I think,
talent wise. But you're gonna have to stop the run.
You're gonna have to be in the trenches. They're gonna
be able to run the football. And I know we're
talking offensive line here, but we're gonna catch up with
John Plattz, who is the color analyst from Mento Basketball
(23:26):
and Football and the football sideline reporter for the Stanford Cardinals.
And this four kid. He can run the football like
they can run the football. They can push up front,
and BA needs to do the same thing. Bau has
a talented offensive line. He heard Andrew Jents. We need
to be physical from the point of attack. We need
to do the same thing that we did. You need
to push, get four or five yards out, getting to
the second level, getting to the linebackers.
Speaker 2 (23:47):
So LJ. Martin can do that and I want to
ask you this, Brett. If LJ.
Speaker 3 (23:51):
Martin is able to replicate what he did, I know
it's not gonna be off eight carries, that'd be crazy.
But if LJ is able to have a fifteen twenty
yard day and go for you know, let's say, one
fifty up up close to one sixty against Stanford, what
would that say about Bau's offensive line LJ.
Speaker 4 (24:08):
Marten?
Speaker 3 (24:08):
Because AP has been given a lot of praise to LJ.
Martin and saying at the one thousand yard season is here.
Now he had seven hundred and I think thirty eight
or eighteen yards last year. He's got like one hundred
and thirty one of that already, so he needs like
five hundred and thirty to catch that. What would that
say about Bou's offensive line in the run game?
Speaker 8 (24:28):
Yeah, I mean BoA's offensive line deserves more credit than
they are getting. I think we as the media have
done a really good job about talking about the Isaiah
Jadas in the world, the injured gentries of the world.
Speaker 2 (24:40):
They deserve so much of the credit.
Speaker 8 (24:43):
For the entirety of those four hundred and sixty eight
yards that were put up onto Portland State. What's interesting
is why against Stanford hawai Wan twenty three twenty We
know that, but what's more significant to me is that
Hawaii didn't even rush for one hundred yards on Stanford.
And that's again that's a game that they lost. But
(25:05):
the strength of that cardinal defense week zero against the
Rainbow Warriors was the fact that they did a really
great job of clogging up the interior of that offensive
line for the Rainbow Warriors for Hawaii, which means BYU
clearly has the potential, the talent, the star power to
(25:26):
push past one hundred yards.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
Clearly. The question is where will that balance out between what.
Speaker 8 (25:32):
Hawaii did last week and what or two weeks ago
and what BYU did last week? Where will BYU fall?
I'm with you, I do think LJ. Martin once this
thing gets out of hand, I think LJ. Martin's first
and second half will probably be lopsided. I think it
may be closer. I think it'd be closer to thirty
(25:52):
to forty yards in the first half, and it'll probably
be an explosion in the second half when they start
running away with it. But again, again, the credit for
all of that needs to go. I shouldn't say all
of it, but a lot of the credit and a
lot more than they are getting should be going to
that bou offensive line.
Speaker 2 (26:10):
And Andrew Gentry is a massive piece of that.
Speaker 3 (26:13):
Yeah, he definitely is a massive piece. Excuse a massive piece,
no doubt about it at all. Andrew Gentry is going
to be critical in the running game with is Aji.
They can do a lot of things when you have
a four star talent like this along the offensive line.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
So let's move on to number two. Let's keep it
going number two.
Speaker 3 (26:32):
Andrew, what was your first home game at Laville Edwards Stadium?
Speaker 6 (26:37):
Like, yeah, it was great.
Speaker 9 (26:39):
I mean I've played in some cool venues, right, you
go from obviously the Big House, played a lot of
games there to Beaver Stadium to the Rose Bolt to
the National Championship, right, so been in some cool venues
and Allies was up there at the top.
Speaker 6 (26:49):
It was sweet. I mean, the fans were awesome.
Speaker 9 (26:52):
Just the tradition that they have that fourth quarter show
is crazy. I've never seen anything like that before. They
told me to expect a lot and it was sweet.
But no, the fans were great. I mean, Kugrenation been
awesome from the start. But being out there in the
game environment was huge. I mean then you look too,
and you know it's the fourth quarter and we're up
big already, and everybody's still in the stands. I mean,
I think it just speaks to how loyal fans we had,
and that was awesome to see.
Speaker 3 (27:13):
Yeah, fans, loyal follow Tell said the same thing, sixty
four thousand and you look up in the fourth quarter,
they're all still there. That's gonna be bau fans unless
it's the Wisconsin game my freshman year getting belt TABOOTI
like thirty eight to three, then fans my leave.
Speaker 2 (27:26):
Yeah, and Jonathan Taylor I think was in that game,
so that's a little bit.
Speaker 8 (27:29):
I was kind of shocked that more fans didn't leave
because it was clearly a blowout, and you and I
were both at the arena, both at the stadium were
fans didn't start leaving until probably four minutes to go
in the fourth like really at the end of the game.
I thought people would leave at the end of the
third quarter, again, just because it was such a blow up. Now,
when you have a fourth quarter show, that is what
(27:51):
it is at Lavell Edwards Stadium. Definitely, the drums up there,
it definitely keeps people in their seats.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
But it was it's going to get better.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
Exactly, the drones are coming, come on exactly the probably
waiting for the Utah game, maybe the West Virginia action,
but the drones are coming.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
Just you wait on NC.
Speaker 8 (28:10):
But no Andrew mentioned that the environment. To me, the
biggest piece of that answer is maybe not everyone who
lives out here has had this experience. I went to
high school twenty minutes from Beaver Stadium at Penn State,
so I've been to I Benda that grew up in Atlanta,
went to Sanford Stadium at Georgia a couple of times.
This is a guy who has played in these biggest venues. Yeah,
(28:33):
in the country. Beaver Stadium is up there, one of
the biggest stadiums in all of college football, same with
the Big House. For him to say that Lavelle Edwards
Stadium is up there, that may not mean that may
not resonate a lot with BYU fans because obviously BYU
fans think that their place is the place to be.
(28:54):
But coming from a guy who has played in all
those environments to say that BU is up there, for me,
as someone who's been to those arenas. That is incredibly
high praise for what cougarnation and what BYU brings to
the table in that environment.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
Yeah, shouldn't be taken lightly.
Speaker 3 (29:10):
I definitely think that's something that fans should pay attention to.
Andrew Gentry's played in some big environments, Rose Bowl, the
Big House, Now l Ees, this is the guy on
the offensive line that's going to be the most unfazed
by any environment that he goes into because he's played
in it. And even necessarily if he was hurting, my
apologies and wasn't playing, having experience that you know what
(29:31):
that's like. So Andrew Gentry, need him, need him to
stay healthy, need to stay healthy, and he's looking fantastic
coming back off that list.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
Front number three, Andrew.
Speaker 3 (29:45):
Is there a message this week specifically about going from
an FCS opponent to a p FOR opponent that changes
your mindset?
Speaker 9 (29:56):
You know, the way that we want to look at
it is every week it's a nameless, faceless opponent.
Speaker 2 (29:59):
Right.
Speaker 9 (30:00):
You go in and you prepare for every game like
it's the National Championship and you're playing you know, Wellhouse
States number one this week, right, so you're playing Ohio State, Right,
It doesn't matter whoever we're playing, right, But you prepare
for that like it's the National Championship, like you're gonna
win every game, because you can't just go week to
week and say, okay, well this team isn't as good
and you know we can take this off for that, right,
And so I think the preparation is the same, right
that you mentioned. We're replicating that then trying to get
(30:20):
better as well, right, looking at things that we can
clean up. But every week, right, that's the goal, is
cleaning up the mistaction last week, getting better and every
week just continuing to grind and that that process, right.
Coach Wood always talks about the process over the prize, right,
that we're a process driven team, and so we're going
to focus on the process of getting better rather than
the win every week and who we're playing.
Speaker 3 (30:38):
The process of getting better every week over the prize,
even though the prize is win the Big twelve title.
To gods who all playoffs, they believe that they can
get to the National Championship and can win it as
they should.
Speaker 2 (30:50):
What are you planning for?
Speaker 4 (30:50):
Then?
Speaker 3 (30:51):
That's what I always say, right, even though people and
us in the media saying I don't think so.
Speaker 2 (30:56):
They're the ones on the team. They know what they have.
We're not fully there.
Speaker 3 (30:59):
We have our horses and things, but we're not directly
at practice every day and we're not putting in the
work or all the work that they put in in
the offseason. They should feel that way in that regard.
But Brett, there's something that stuck out. He is like
the fourth or fifth or sixth player who I've heard
it's Meati availability sound us doing interviews as said, want
to know is like you're playing Ohio State.
Speaker 2 (31:20):
Like they all have mentioned that in some shape or form.
Volatiles mention it.
Speaker 3 (31:24):
We'll get to my nay with Dom Mackenzie Emerson, I
think mentioned with being in Canada.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
Devriez mentioned it.
Speaker 3 (31:29):
You heard Cili said, there's multiple of these guys that
did it, So there's something has to be paying it
in the locker room or whatever. The culture messages have
been drilled into their brains. They all are like, want
to know, play Ohio State to get the best performance.
Because I think you would agree with this if you
had that you're playing Ohio State every single week, or
if that was the national championship, you wouldn't go out
(31:50):
there and you know half, you know what if you'd
bring your a game and you'd be like, I gotta
go lay that brother out, respectfully, I gotta go win
the game. And I think the leadership up on this team,
even guys that have just come in, is different a
year's past, because I haven't heard that until the last
two seasons.
Speaker 2 (32:09):
There's no cockiness to this team at all.
Speaker 8 (32:13):
There's a balance between confidence and arrogance, and this team
seems to have found the perfect level where you hear
him say every week it's a it's a faceless opponent.
Will Farren kind of said a similar thing where he's like,
I'm just focused on being one on zero with each kick.
Someone else said, we're just going one to o every week.
(32:36):
It's not that they're saying we can beat everyone. Give
us Bama. They give us like they're just saying, whoever
it is, we got a game to play on Saturday.
Whoever it is, nameless, faceless, We're here to ball out
irrespective of who it is. Aaron Roders said the same
thing last.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
Week in media availability.
Speaker 8 (32:55):
His thing was, look, I'm not I'm not planning for
when this game gets out of hand. I'm not planning
when our twos and threes are going in. What I'm
worried about is how do we win this week. I'm
not worried about getting guys extra reps and not worried
about the extra stuff. I'm worried about how do we
win this game right here, right now. And that seems
to be a mentality that is infecting every member of
(33:15):
this team in the best way.
Speaker 3 (33:17):
It's a disease that is a good disease, yep. And
there doesn't need to be a cure for it anytime soon.
Because when you have egos, when you have people that
have cockiness to it, or maybe that are playing for themselves,
as Connor pay mentioned about a certain player that we
won't bring up in the past, when you're playing for
yourself and not your brothers, that that it creeps in
and that can affect the culture, that can affect the
(33:37):
locker room, that can affect a position group when you
have that, no doubt about it at all. So it's
something that you really have to buy into if you're
looking at it from the outside perspective, because that is
starting to be contingent. Even those that talk like Tommy
Prass is a very confident individual. Don't let you know.
Tran Aleck Janner very confident individual. Don't let you know
the even some silent killers like Isaiah Glaska who let
(34:00):
you know in that regard. But those guys never come
to a point where it's you know, cockiness, it's confidence.
Is we are dedicated to the craft and we as
the players, even though I'm saying we, they are, they're
dedicated to making sure that they get the job done.
Let's finish up with number four right here before we
go to break. Got to pay the bills in the
(34:20):
next segment. Number four. Andrew, who's placed it out to
you this past Saturday against Portland State?
Speaker 6 (34:27):
I mean everybody, honestly.
Speaker 9 (34:29):
I mean I think he just speaks to them right.
The fact that they could go in, you know, not
really expecting how much they were gonna play, and going
in that whole second half and move the ball as
well as they did and spore as many points as
they did, or there wasn't.
Speaker 4 (34:38):
Really a role.
Speaker 9 (34:39):
So I mean, I would give a shout out to
any guy that went in on the offensive line, you know,
special shout out to Coca Final. He played great, I
mean seeing him out there, true freshman. He didn't play
high school football in games his last two years, so
to see a true freshman go out there, I remember
my first game as a true freshman and playing at
the big house, right, and the nerves that you have.
It was just the second half similar to what he did.
But it's nerve wracking experience. And he went out and
(35:01):
I thought he did well and just just played hard,
and so Especial sat out to him. But really, all
the guys on the old line did did really well,
and I'm really happy with those guys and they've done well.
Speaker 3 (35:09):
I want to bring up a point of a guy
who said, and I hope I said the name right,
and I know we we had his brother in the
show when they committed, but Ceo sua lat too female,
change your name right?
Speaker 2 (35:20):
I think I got that wrong, and correct me if
I did. I apologize.
Speaker 3 (35:23):
Three ten six' five freshman From, Oakland. CALLIFORNIA i think
his older brother might BE KLEPPI i could be wrong about.
That correct me If i'm. Wrong the fans. Will but
to not having, played he SAID i schootball was freshman. Season,
However andrew mentioned. It that's big and to get that
shot out he, said, EVERYBODY i you saw me bread
through my hands of, okay enough with everybody after The
(35:44):
saturday won't be everybody struck. Out they will have to
be playmakers that'll win you the game one hundred percent
or the entire position group had to be In. Unison
but when you bring up a guy like, this it
really stands out BECAUSE i think he was another, kid
local kid that was thinking about going. ELSEWHERE i can't Remember,
phils you, Know stanford or another, school but to get
him and other brothers and they changed their last name
TO lat two.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
Finale but to be able to do, that it's it's.
Speaker 3 (36:09):
Crazy SO i just really wanted to highlight him and
how you how you discussed that because when you sing
a lot of certain player like How tommy Praz, Is
Evan johnson other people are DIFFER.
Speaker 2 (36:18):
Lj, martin that means a.
Speaker 3 (36:19):
Lot so that's high praise coming From andrew that he
stuck out to him in that regard a lot Of
depp offensive. Line AND i think they're gonna be. Fine
over the, years there were question Marks brett going. In
we didn't, know but right now looking at, IT i
think they'll be. Okay, Yeah and what proves that to.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
Me more than.
Speaker 8 (36:33):
Anything what proves valid everything he just said is That
ron the scoring slow down when they got to the second.
Speaker 2 (36:41):
Half now the run games slow down when they got the. Ones, Dude, yeah.
Speaker 8 (36:48):
Because a lot of times what you can see AND
i think we may be taking this for granted a little,
bit but not everybody's twos and threes are capable of
DOMINATING fcs. Schools and there's a difference bet between winning
AN fcs game and dominating AN fcs. Game some, teams
when they put their, twos, threes and fours, in it
became it could becomes kind of a close battle between
(37:10):
YOUR fcs school and your.
Speaker 2 (37:12):
Backups and WITH, byu it felt like if.
Speaker 8 (37:15):
They rolled their threes and fours and twos out to
start the, game and had they held their, starters you
still would have won that game by a massive, margin
which just goes to show the depths on this team
is incredible and Everything Andrew gentry, said he's not just
blowing smoking his. Teammates they're one hundred percent accurate in
(37:36):
being that good because of everything you saw in the
way they dominated On.
Speaker 3 (37:41):
Saturday, yeah they, dominated no, doubt and you're gonna have
to dominate Against.
Speaker 2 (37:44):
Stanford this, GAME i think is gonna be a lot about.
Speaker 3 (37:46):
It we discuss it in the first. Hour the trenches
and the run. Game you gotta HAVE i think over two.
Hundred if you get over two hundred and, fifty that'd
even be.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
Better rushing. Yards this is where you're running the dang
for the.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
Ball this is a game where you get confident because
when you go To colorado those lines are a dodo
and you want to.
Speaker 2 (38:02):
Win so this is where you test. Yourself, yep you test.
Yourself you get it right before the.
Speaker 3 (38:06):
Buy so come out of the, buy you, execute and
then you go To Colorado Injury conference play and you
take care of. Business it's the offensive line playing the
defensive line. Play they come out, physical. Violent they set
the tone just like in basketball If kiba when fus
when they would set the tone grabbing rebounds and blocking.
Shots you set the tone from jump the guys they
take that upon. Themselves everything. Else i'm pretty sure we'll
(38:28):
fall into. Play but that was your player. Profile second

we sent. You they'll take care of Your Game Day
Men's health Dot. Com, okay let's get it to The
cougar Byte brett Bear. Bachmeier, obviously he goes against his.
(41:46):
Defense there might be a little bit of, bias but
he thinks that THIS byu team is a top ten.
Defense he caught up With Spencer lonton obviously after the
win Over Portland State less hear From bear on what
he had to say on they can improve in about the.
Speaker 2 (42:01):
Defense what's that like for you to watch four different
quarterbacks take? Snaps, yeah it was.
Speaker 10 (42:06):
FUN i, mean those guys are my brothers and and you,
know my cess is their success and vice. Versas SO
i mean the camaraderie in that room is second to,
nine and so it was special watching them.
Speaker 1 (42:17):
Play and then just generally, SPEAKING i know that you
lead the, offense but what are you feeling when you
watch your defense go out and play the way that they?
Speaker 10 (42:27):
DID i, mean, yeah their top ten defense in the,
country and and, uh it's it's cool to to know
that you, know you kind of have a safety valve
on defense and and you know you know that they're
going to get a. Stop, yeah so it's a great
feeling to have, them to have them out.
Speaker 2 (42:43):
There who'd you get THE mvp of your team to?
Speaker 8 (42:45):
Tonight?
Speaker 4 (42:47):
HMMM i mean all five guys up?
Speaker 6 (42:51):
Front, yeah all five guys up.
Speaker 1 (42:52):
Front that's a Veteran and that might be the most
veteran thing you've done, tonight is crediting your offensive.
Speaker 4 (42:57):
Line, YEAH i.
Speaker 2 (42:58):
Mean it starts up.
Speaker 10 (43:00):
Front and you know we're gonna go Get Rice krispies
or something like.
Speaker 2 (43:03):
That so here we Go Rice christiers Or Rice Krispy
treats or both both and. Milkshakes, okay now we're hearing.
It both and. Milkshakes he likes. Milkshakes and who was.
Speaker 8 (43:15):
It we did an interview with someone the other day
who said they were going to get. Milkshakes it's J
martin we heard. From, yeah it was.
Speaker 3 (43:22):
One he said going to get. Milkshakes he, Said Rice
Chrispy treats and. Milkshakes Bear bachmeyer has a sweet To
maybe that's why the body's not built Like taysom because
he liked E Yu.
Speaker 8 (43:31):
Creamery we need a bare Bach buyer. Milkshake we had
the one TIME U Blue cougar tail just for one.
Game for one game this, season can we get a
specific Bear bachmeier?
Speaker 2 (43:46):
Milkshake you, know, brother you brought a really good. Idea
you need to put that on socials. NOW i need
to do that right.
Speaker 3 (43:51):
Now this is the third or fourth time we've heard
milkshakes be mentioned by, somebody and that he Said.
Speaker 2 (43:56):
RICE i love HOW i said.
Speaker 3 (43:58):
BOTH i just need to teach him to correct Both
boff not bot. H Both rice Chris bys And Rack
chrisby treats BOTH R brockmeiers a sweet. Tooth i'm starting
to learn, that. Boy, sure and veteran, Answer, brett the
boys up. Front if you don't mention the boys up,
front you know they. Can they can let someone take
your head off and they'll keep you protected in the right.
(44:18):
Way so veteran.
Speaker 2 (44:19):
Answer but.
Speaker 3 (44:19):
No the big, thing and we need to put this out,
too agree or disagree is Bear Bachmeyer we know it
was last. Year Is BYU's defense for the twenty twenty
five twenty six? Season is it or will it be
a top ten? Defense however you want to phrase that.
QUESTION i agree with. THEM i think it will be
a top ten defense because they took away the. Most
(44:41):
they took away the ball the most last, year right
in The Big. Twelve it was the top defense in
The Big. TWELVE i think you're gonna see the same
thing replicated as the season goes, on not just taking
away the.
Speaker 2 (44:53):
Football they won't do it as, much BUT i think
they're gonna get it to the.
Speaker 3 (44:55):
QUARTERBACK i think they're gonna, disruption stop the, rush stop
the run game of other, teams and really put him in,
second third and long and then get after the. Quarterback
that's something That Jay hill has been able to dial.
Up they have some of the best defensive backs in
the country last year and taken away the. FOOTBALL i
think you got what thirteen guys that had, interceptions thirteen different.
Dudes and NOW i think what you're gonna see is
thirteen different guys have sacks and get to the. Quarterback
(45:18):
AND i bring it up and that's not hyperbole Because
eddie hackeruin The arkansas game two years ago had a
strip sack right. There jay rob look what he did
at the line of scripmag in the nickel. Position that's
Why Tommy prasses might have a big. Year he already
had a good year last, season but he might take
a huge jump volatile Soatsuwala Jay hill gives a guy
his guys an opportunity to make. Plays but the milkshake
(45:40):
Lover Bear? Bachmeier will base defense be a top ten?
Defense and what flavor of? Milkshake Brett? HAMMER i ask,
you those.
Speaker 2 (45:47):
Are two loaded. Questions I'm i'm. TRYING i never ask
you a loaded question. Ever, YEAH i think if you
could somehow just based off this interview.
Speaker 8 (45:56):
Alone we don't Know. Bear we don't know what his
ice cream tendencies. Are we did hear from this though
Rice krispy. Treats i've never heard of A Rice Krispy treat,
milkshake but that could go. CRAZY i do think we
need some form of one Game Bear bachmeyer. MILKSHAKE i
just put it out On Ben krittle ON X. So
(46:16):
i'm curious to know what the fans think A Bear
bachmeyer milkshake would taste. Like i'd love to Ask bear
at himself when we get him in media. Next we
need to ask. Him, okay we hear so much about the.
Milkshakes what is the go to milkshake For?
Speaker 2 (46:30):
Bear.
Speaker 8 (46:31):
Bachmeyer but The but what he loves more Than milkshake's
ron we He moore loves just as much as the
big boys up, front is he loves his. Defense as he,
said these boys could be top. Ten he, said this
hops like. Championship SO i, said, LOOK i understand it's week,
one week, zero not everybody has played, everybody But i'm
(46:53):
just curious with one. Game Play boy is not the
only team to play IN fcs School where DOES byu
rank in terms of total, defense in terms of rush?
Yards in terms of all those, THINGS byu through the
season so far only has given up fifty one your
fifty one total yards per ESPN's total defense stats of
(47:16):
twenty twenty, Five So bou's number one in that. REGARD
byu gave up negative five yards. RUSHING byu was the
only school to hold a defense to negative yards. Rushing
and as far as as far as passyards, go there
are five schools six schools ahead OF, BYU Ul, Monroe,
(47:40):
Florida San Diego, State, Louisiana Raging, Cajun's, oklahoma And washington
say and nobody's given them craft for PLAYING fcs. Schools
but in terms of total, yardage nobody did it better THAN.
Byu funny, enough these schools who gave up less passing
yards THAN byu In week. One Washington state gave up
(48:01):
one hundred and eighty eight rushing, Yards oklahoma gave up
one to seventeen To louisiana gave up two oh. Six
SO byu just Through week one just threw overreactions from
the first game of the. Season week, one B oru
starting to look like they could be on pace to
certainly prove. Everything Bear bachmeyer just said in being a
(48:22):
top ten, Defense.
Speaker 2 (48:25):
Yeah they're On they're gonna be on. PACE i think
to be a top ten.
Speaker 3 (48:28):
Defense they were good last season already this, POINT i
think you're gonna see, That no.
Speaker 2 (48:33):
Doubt it's. Early but, hey J, hill don't DOUBT J.
Hill when you GIVE J hill, time he. Delivers. Uh
maybe he should be the new Male.
Speaker 3 (48:41):
Man maybe he should be the New Carl malone Because
jay he'll always make sure his guys are, prepped ready
to go. Delivers but Rice chrispy milkshake There backmeier gonna
ask him that next time in media availability for. Sure
good Thought brett on. That but that was you Coogabyte
brought to you by Game Day Men's, Healthy, guys Game
Day Men's. Health if you want more, energy you want more,
muscle if you want to lose belly, fat Then Game
(49:01):
Day Men's health has the peptide, therapies fat burning and
the t shot testoster on boost that help. You free
testoster on and test and console plus fifty percent off
your first. Year if you MENTIONED espn the, fan they
got Four utah locations four that Is Pleasant Grove, Lehigh Cottonwood,
Heights South ogden again free, testosterone test and consolation plus
(49:27):
fifty percent off your first. Year when you MENTIONED espn De,

way it looks like it's gone, up by the, way,
yea it is not eighteen is now, twenty so they're

Uh stevens than Booboo. Johnson so that coming up right
