Speaker 1 (00:01):
Just like the Couper football team, Ben Qrittle was built,
not born, and since two thousand and nineties built himself
into the go to source on the radio and online
for all things Cooper's. This is Cougar Sports with Ben
Krettel on one O three nine ninety eight three ESPN
the Fan.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Welcome back Cougar Sports.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
One of three nine nine eight point three EESBN Devan.
I've been Crittle broadcasting from our ultimate Tailgator, our ultimate
tailgate event just south of Lavelle Edwards Stadium. Stop on by,
say hello, We've got some modducs cooking up here.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Sorely.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
We're right here at the South Swig in Provo. We'd
love to see you. Love to get your prep for
this Bou Stanford matchup by you have your favorite welcoming
in the own one Stanford Cardinal who lost a WI
week zero in a close one. Uh why then follow
that up with a loss to U of A forty
to six.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
I believe so.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Whai And granted the Hawaii did have an injury at
quarterback I think in that Stanford game where they weren't
completely on running on all cylinders versus U of A.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
But you know Stanford. It's their first loss.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
It was their first loss ever to Hawaii, I believe,
and so that was pretty devastating for a team coming
off four consecutive three and nine season looking to rebuild,
be revamped, remodel, restructured with an interim head coach Frank
Reich and a GM trying to figure out how to
win in Stanford in the modern era as a member
of the ACC conference only getting what thirty percent sheriff
(01:29):
media rights right now, AP got that confirmed, So they're
like only a one third member of the ACC right now,
and I think they're on the brink of relevancy. That's
my personal opinion. So you got to come out with
a convincing victory tonight. B Yu won and oh they
had an awesome victory over Portland State doing what they
were supposed to do, sixty nine to zero at home.
(01:51):
So now you got to get to tow and O
and you get a P four win, a ACC win.
Shout out to Baylor also who got to win over
the ACC and SMU loved what I saw there. But
I do want to get a little college football report
right here momentarily from Zach Robinson, but big Coogar wrote,
all of our sponsors. We got Royal Army brand here,
(02:12):
Royal Army brand dot comy will you swagger to by fans?
Four fans, Come and get your white out gear prior
to entering into Lavelle Edwards Stadium.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
You're supposed to wear white. I believe the lids.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
Are we going white lids tonight Royal jerseys and then
white pants with the Royal accents.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Yep? Okay, love that, love that look.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
And I'm sure Stamford's gonna bring their their their uh
their cardinal.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Red into the city. They're all white. They're all white.
Stanford's all white, okay, and then they're they're Stanford Cardinal. Uh.
I guess uh maroon accents. So we'll see.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Uh should look good on ESPN right late night kickoff
one of the three really late kicks eight fifteen pm.
So uh the uh uh, the the Cougars under the lights.
Levell have bawled out and they've done really well, as
have the the Rock and the Royal Army, which I damaged.
The fan base that show up, show out, be loud,
(03:04):
be proud, disruptive and be a part of the win.
Be the twelfth Man that's why you play at home
versus P four opponents, so you can get wins and
have a competitive advantage. You can look back at recent history,
whether it's Utah when you finally broke the curse in
twenty twenty one with Jared Hall at the Helm, or
the or the ASU game at home, create false starts,
(03:27):
be a part of that win because you know that's
the way you can lift lift where you stand as
a fan at Lavelle Edwards Stadium. But one also give
a big cougar ard to Banterwealth. Banterwealth dot Com can't
do our show without Vanter Wealth. We're at our ultimate
tail Gator owned operated by a certified Financial Planner NFLPA
Certified Financial Planner, Blaye Anderson, who's right here next to
(03:48):
me playing.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
How the heck are you, buddy?
Speaker 4 (03:49):
I'm doing great, loving it, happy to be out here
and excited for another game tonight.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
It's a big game on the number of fronts. I
know BYU is a heavy favorite twenty and a half.
I think the over runners at forty four and a half.
But and FPI think gives b what you are like
a ninety nine point two percent chance of victory.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Something like that sp plus.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Bill Conley of ESPN said that he'd be surprised if
it's not a bigger win than twenty one points. If
it's less than twenty one points, you'll be surprised.
Speaker 5 (04:16):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
And so we're coming in confident as media members, as fans,
and you'll you'll hope BYU's football team is as well.
But man, it's uh, it's it's gonna be may It's
gonna be a much tougher game than what we experienced
versus Portland State, no doubt about.
Speaker 5 (04:32):
Oh yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
And I love the backstory behind this too, going up
against Stanford, with the Bachmeyer brothers coming from there. Hopefully
we get to see a little bit more of Bear tonight,
see the arsenal, see what he can do, see more
of what this team is about. You mentioned it earlier,
this would be this is a big opportunity for Stanford.
I mean, if they could come out and play tough
and play big, so we gotta be ready. I like
(04:54):
our chances. I know we've talked a lot about covering
and not covering. I like our chances to cover again.
But great storyline with this as well.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Yeah, good teams win, Great teams cover. Is this gonna
be a great team? A lot of EAU fans feel
like this is a great team in the making. This
is a team that won in spite of quarterback play
poor to medium average, lukewarm quarterback play. Jake redslap by
the way, is I don't know if that that game
is kicked off?
Speaker 2 (05:19):
The Tulane game, I haven't. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
If we want to get a little college football update,
Zach Robbinson, give us a little update on all the
college football scores here, let's roll through them.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
What do you got for me?
Speaker 6 (05:30):
Yeah, I'm gonna give you some big twelve scores real quick.
Right Here are boys up North Utah taking on cal Poly.
They're up twenty one to six. Cal Poly just kicked
a field goal. Missouri is up on Kansas forty two
to thirty one. That game just ended, so that's a
win from Missouri. West Virginia is down to Ohio seventeen
to ten. Rice and Houston just kicking off just now.
Oregon defeated Oklahoma State sixty nine to three, and this
(05:54):
game also just ended. Colorado with thirty one seven.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Wow man, Oklahoma State.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
There was some banter going on between Gundy and uh
Landing pregame this week and their pressers UH Gundhy essentially said, hey, like,
we spent on our roster.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
I don't know it was like seven million or something
like that.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
And and Oregon states, you know, thirty million or what
have you. And Landing equipped in his pressure stating, you know,
some people have excuses like we invest to win. Some
invest to have excuses. Uh and shoot, Orgon took it
to him. Now now we don't have much room to talk.
Be what you last time we faced by you faced
Orgon at Orgon, it was not pretty. It wasn't that
(06:34):
bad though it was it was, it was bad, but
it wasn't that bad.
Speaker 7 (06:37):
It wasn't that bad though. Like that was that was
That was a score BOMs down. That was a belt
of booty by you got beat by Organ. They didn't
get a belt of booty performance like they scored more
than three like.
Speaker 8 (06:47):
And they didn't give up. What was it seventy point
seventy points?
Speaker 4 (06:51):
Was that game at Oregon two? Yeah, that was on
bo Nix's plan. Well today the Oklahoma state was up.
Speaker 5 (06:57):
Yeah, that was the organ they got bad update.
Speaker 7 (06:59):
It looks like, uh what Tulane and is down to
South Alabama seven to zero, seven to zero.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Right Lane has not had the ball yet though, so.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Just kid and and and Brendan Sullivan and Jake reds
Laft will be switching. Yes, uh they will. They're coach
starters essentially. Kyle and the fam love you guys. We'll
chat with you here shortly, but uh yeah, that you know,
just to kind of keep tabs on Jake reds up
and going back to my point, b YU fans feel like,
b why you want in spite of quarterback played, so
(07:27):
Beart Bachmeyer, the Stanford transfer, the four star quarterback coming
in and becoming the starter. All you have to do
is manage the game and you can win eleven games.
And b YU fans minds, that's kind of how you're feeling.
With a schedule that is pretty fortuitous. In the first six,
you do have a four game gauntlet between you know,
Utah and in Texas Tech and TCU. That's it's gonna
(07:48):
be a tough one, right. Those are some good teams
that are balling out, have great talent, great coaching staffs
as well. But b YU fans feel, hey, we can
get to ten wins once again. This season with a
true freshmanquarterback because of our top twenty five defense, top
twenty five special teams unit, and a supporting cast on
offense that can establish the run game LJ and SciOne.
(08:08):
You have blocking tight ends and corson Kean need Noah
Muayaki looked pretty good as well. You have a great
wide receiving corps and Chase Roberts and Parker Kingston, Jojo Phillips,
Cody Hagen is definitely gonna be a star, I believe
with this BYU offense, Tanakul hopefully getting back healthy again,
et cetera.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
But there's a great supporting cast.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
And that's why Vway fans are so optimistic about twenty
twenty five because it's not necessary because Bear Bachmeyer is
the greatest quarterback to come through BYU.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
It's that he's big, he's strong, he's.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Fast, he's got running ability, and he's a pretty good
bro He's a good enough thrower, and he's gonna make
hopefully good decisions under the architecture, under the guidance of
Aaron Roderick. Would you echo those same centen it's Blaine Anderson.
Speaker 4 (08:54):
Yes, absolutely, it is. It's the surrounding cast We've talked
about it some before. It seems like this is an
id situation if we're going to have a freshman quarterback
come in because of the supporting cast and the people
around him. So I am excited, and I know many
of us fans are. I think tonight's going to be
a great night under the lights and great points. I'm
(09:15):
totally with you and absolutely echo those remarks and feelings
real quick.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
For all of our listeners here that you know, they
may have a financial planner, they may have a firm
that they invest with, a traditional firm, whether it's you know, Leshwa, Fideliti, etcetera.
There's many firms out there that handle money and helping
you know, investors invest.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Why should they give you a call get on a
free Q and.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
A no obligation to invest Q and A with the
tax mart Wealth Advisors of ban Terwealth.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
Well, one of the things I would mention first is
as a certified financial planner, as a CFP, it's my
job to bring the pillars.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
Of financial planning together.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
So that's coordinating with the estate planning attorney, the accountants,
and the other professionals that are involved in putting together
a comprehensive financial plan. But as an independent firm, we
do a lot of specific types of investments, investing in
private investments, whether it be real estate or other tax
advantage vehicles, that provides diversification in a portfolio. Right now,
(10:13):
we're helping a number of clients and even a few
listeners through a ten thirty one process and they work
with other financial professionals.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
That's okay.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
This is a type of transaction that we've been doing
for a lot of years. We help with replacement properties
and it's part of a tax strategy. So incorporating the
tax planning and the investment planning is a big part
of the overall financial plan and that's what we focus on.
And then the thing I'd like to mention is that
our clients know when their next appointment, when their next
(10:41):
communication or strategic financial planning session is going to be
with us. That's important. So if you're looking for a
firm that communicates often and that is advanced in the
tax and investment strategies, that's what we've been doing for
seventeen years now.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
Love that well, you guys do great work. What are
some of the questions typically that our listeners have is
there kind of a typical line of questioning that they
navigate through when chatting with you and your team.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
Yeah, they do. It.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
Seems like a lot of questions have come up around
creating income and how to do that within a portfolio,
and so, yes, there's diving in stocks, but we have
our income notes. We do our real estate investments and
a number of passive investments that help create income. It's
good for the tax strategy side of things, but our
band or custom income notes are something that we do
(11:32):
a little bit differently. It's something we do each month.
We work with a lot of the large institutions in
creating monthly cash co pons and higher rates.
Speaker 5 (11:41):
There's, of course.
Speaker 4 (11:41):
Always some risks that go to it, and that's what
we help explain before investing. But creating income in a
portfolio something that comes up quite a bit with listeners.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
Blaine Anderson Banterwealth Banterwealth dot Com talking to BYU Football
as well as we prep you for these BYU Stamford game.
You know, there was a couple of individuals that addressed
the media from Stanford, Frank Reich and Scotty Edwards. Scotty
Edwards is one of those guys that you lost in
a recruiting battle versus Stanford. Scotty Edwards is the starting
(12:12):
safety for the Stanford Cardinal. And what's crazy is he
grew up a BYU fan. So this is me telling
another story about how important.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
This game is versus Stanford.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
You have a young man who grew up a BYU
fan that probably came to a multitude of BYU football
games and he's starting for the Stanford Cardinal. Now, he
chose the Stanford Cardinal most likely due to maybe a relationship,
but most likely I would say it's due to academics.
He's a high academic kid, comes from a great family.
I interviewed him in his during his recruitment and great
(12:49):
young man was looking for, you know, a holistic experience,
and he chose the academic prowess of Stanford over BYU
and his football perier. And part of that had to
do with maybe was in a bit of a rebuild mode,
you know, twenty and eighty twenty nineteen and getting into
the COVID year, some question marks. Scotti Edrews is now
a tenured player there at Stamford, and he's stuck it
(13:11):
out at Stamford. But you don't want to miss out
on guys like Scotty Edwards, and so when you hear
him discuss, hey, it was a I grew up a
fan and it's somewhat of a dream to play at BUYU.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
And then that changed along the line.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
Along the path, you have to ask questions such as
why did you lose Scotti Edwards. Klane mentioned in his
press conference, we recruited a bunch of those guys. They
have good football players on the Stanford roster and you
may have lost out on them, right, you lost out
on those guys. You don't want to miss out on
those guys going forward. They're coming off three or sorry
four to three to nine seasons.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
It's an imperative.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
You're gonna win in a convincing win under the lights
of leavel tonight and I can't wait to see it now.
I would like to see BYU covered. I'm petty, you know.
I want to step on the throat. I want to
push them off the cliff of a into a relevancy
here tonight at Lavelle Edwards Stadium. So I want them
not only to win, but to cover twenty and a half.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
That's doable now. Earlier in the week.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
I was a little bit hesitant to say Boa he's
gonna cover I think BoA's gonna cover it.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
Right now.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
We do have some clouds coming in. Is there gonna
be precipitation? There was like a thirty percent chance, I
believe last time I checked of precipitation. Could it get wet,
could it get wild? Could it get a little bit sloppy? Yes,
if that occurs. I actually think that.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
Boats well for BYU.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
BYU almost tallied five hundred yards of rushing versus Portland State.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
That's a lot of yards rushing.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
A Rod has been adamant all fall camp that this
team is going to be able to run the football.
In fact, he had one of those like chuckles of
like I gotta convince you guys about how good our
rush attack can be. He's like, we're gonna be good. Okay,
We're gonna be good running the football. Ljcon our offensive line.
(14:57):
I do think our offensive line is more physical at
the point of attack than it was even a year ago.
I think we were really good in pass pro last year.
I think this year we're actually even better in the
run attack. Andrew Gentry and Isaiah john Of both I
think are better run blockers than Caleb and Braiden. Not
to take anything away from Caleb and Braiden, both professional
tackles now in one in the NFL, one in the CFL.
(15:20):
But and then you have a bunch of guys on
the internal side of things that are coming back Wayln
Austin Leus, Kyle super Choke, Bruce mitchell Is, Sonny Macassini.
All those guys are bigger, better and stronger than ever.
So we're gonna be able to run football. Actually think
it would be beneficial. It would be actually benefit BYU
if it did get a little sloppy tonight. Now, one
of the questions I've been kind of asking cougarnation most
(15:45):
boy fans, the hypercritical VYU fans said, we did not
throw the ball enough versus Portland State for me to
conclude on whether or not bear Bachmeiers actually is a
good throwing quarterback.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
He went seven of eleven.
Speaker 3 (15:59):
The four or incompletions were a little bit off target,
could have been picks versus better defenses. Okay, so they
were good decisions, per a rod, but they were all
kind of sort of bad balls to a degree, not
completely off mark, but they just weren't as accurate as
the tenured, loyal, strong and true Bay fan is accustomed
(16:21):
to from quarterback player.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
That the bar is pretty high as it relates to
quarterback play.
Speaker 3 (16:26):
And so, how many throws do you think bear Bachmeyer
gets to night lits stock metrics with Baterwealth Batterwell dot Com.
How many throws they got? Eleven throws? He got eleven
throws versus Portland. Say, and that was just in one half.
He's gonna play the entirety of this game. How many
throws do you think bar Bachmeyer gets under the lights
of level tonight?
Speaker 4 (16:45):
Well, so we had eleven in the first half last week.
Speaker 2 (16:48):
He's got to have it. Then at least we need
at least twenty twenty.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
Yeah, we're gonna play it, play it true at least twenty,
but I'd love to see twenty five. I mean, I
can see where some of those comments come from about
the game last week. I mean, it was a great game,
a lot of points, but I would love to see
more of Backmer, see more of what kind of passery is,
what kind of quarterback he is. So hopefully we get
to see more of that tonight. If he plays more.
(17:12):
We got to at least count on twice as many throws.
So twenty two is where we need to be. I'd
like to see more than that. It'd be fun to watch.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Yeah. Look, and Bear did tod a lot.
Speaker 3 (17:21):
I mean there was a few times where he just
tucked and ran and he showed his ability to run.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
He can bootscoot and boogie.
Speaker 3 (17:29):
Yeah, and then he looked like you know, fly B
forty seven bomb or flying B forty seven bomber jumping
into the end zone for the Tuddy looked really.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
Dynamic with the ball in his hands.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
You could see a little bit more Bear Bachman on
the run game tonight than you did even versus Portland State.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
Oh yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 4 (17:45):
In that game against Portland State was probably as good
as we could hope for, certainly by the score, but
even for him, he got comfortable first time playing with
a crowd, and l Ees got some throws, got some touchdowns.
But tonight, I'm sure it wasn't gonna see.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
A lot more. Yes.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
Also, as a side note here, we were discussing recruiting
and winning and recruiting. Hunter Kleig was originally committed to
Stanford before retracting his His commitment ended up at Utah
and then he served his mission.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
Okay, came back and he.
Speaker 3 (18:14):
Thought, you know, b Yu's actually be a better place
for me. I interviewed him earlier in fall camp and
and he kind of told me the story about how
that all occurred. And and so look that type of
high level of young man who was at OE three
defense end three and now has moved up to the
second OWI behind Logan Latuwi.
Speaker 2 (18:36):
Like you could have missed out on Hunter Clake.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
Wow, it was a battle between Stamford Utah BYU and
ultimately b Y was the third team at that time.
Now that Boa is in the P four, now that
they have uh, they they've always had a great education,
they have nil opportunities. Those are the guys that you're
gonna continue to get if you continue to win on
the football field. In my opinion, the individuals is looking
(18:59):
for the whole stick experience that by you can provide
for you. All Right, guys, we're gonna take a brief
time out. Appreciate Blaine Anderson and his crew uh being

Speaker 3 (19:36):

their their CPAs that they invest with you, Uh, then
you're gonna aid them and support them and align with
them their their their their uh their their accountants in
order to uh save them money on their taxes at
the end of the year.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
Just yesterday I had a conversation with the client's accountants
and we walked through a few different strategies. And those
types of conversations are so efficient for clients. And we
know it's not what you make, it's what you keep.
The largest bill that our clients are going to pay
during retirement is their tax bill. And so to me,
this is one of those core essential planning items is
to have your professionals communicating. That's an intentional approach that
(20:16):
we take is to work as tax smart wealth advisors
and alongside clients professionals. But then also we bring a
lot of things to the table when it comes to
tax advantaged strategies and it's an important part of comprehensive
financial planning. So thanks Ben for having me on tonight.
We're looking to make deposits in the memory bank. We

We're gonna be playing on natural grass today. Make sure
you got your screw ins and you're not wearing vapor cleats.
Don't want to do that tonight. You always want to
have a competitive avantage on.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
Your home field.
Speaker 3 (22:57):
Love vapor and play by playboys and you're not able
to attend. Is gonna be Mark Jones on the mothership.
ESPN color analyst, Roddy Jones, Siline reporter Quin Kesinich is
gonna be on the shideline hopefully Stamford's prep for the
elevation as they have to play at forty five hundred feet.
Uh so you want to fatigue them a little bit,
little go fast, go hard doesn't hurt anybody, but the opposition.
(23:21):
They better have brought their oxygen takes for the sideline
because it can get pretty uh, it can get pretty uh,
you know, depleted that oxygen.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
Level if you're you're, you're, you're, you're you.
Speaker 3 (23:33):
Know, kind of engaging in some high level level cardiovascular
play where white as I mentioned B why he's gonna
be wearing the white caps, Okay, white lids, royal jerseys
and h white pants with the royal accents obviously B
while you're led by Koloni Sataki in his tenth year
seventy three and forty three.
Speaker 2 (23:54):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
He graduate from Brigham back in two thousand and now
he's got his dream job of leading the Cougars. Frank
Reich in his first year as interim head coach for
the Stanford Cardinal. His career record though as a coach
in the National Football League forty three, so hopping around
five hundred. His record at Stanford as an interim head coach.
Oh and one, we're gonna hear from Frank Reich here momentarily,
(24:16):
b hy you at twenty and a half point favorite
and the over under said at forty four and a half.
Speaker 2 (24:20):
Guys, you picking the over or the under? By the way,
does B why you cover tonight? Yes? Or no? Why?
Speaker 5 (24:24):
Why not?
Speaker 3 (24:25):
And then what do you pick it over? Under Andrew Peterson?
You start off with us one am, I let's go spread?
Is are they gonna cover? And then you picking the
over or the under.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
The spread.
Speaker 8 (24:39):
I'm less confident this week that they're gonna cover the
spread than I was last week. I was pretty oudamant
BA was gonna cover. Stanford's actually got athletes. No disrespect
to Portland State, but the athletes at Portland State are
nothing compared to what Stanford and b way you as
Stanford has actually actually has some athletes that can create
some problems every once in a while here and there.
I'm still gonna pick BA to cover the spread, and
(25:01):
I am yeah, I'll go with the over if I'm
gonna cover. If I'm gonna say Boa is gonna cover
the spread, I'm also gonna go with the over.
Speaker 2 (25:09):
I like it.
Speaker 3 (25:10):
Ronald the three man Weaver, what do you think does
BYU cover the twenty and a half points? And then
you're picking the over or the under night forty four
and a half total?
Speaker 7 (25:18):
Yeah, I definitely think bo you covers. I think they
hit the twenty one. It could be worse, but I'll
go right at twenty one even though it's so over
and yeah, because of that, I think you will cover
the spread. I don't think BA is gonna just put
up twenty one points tonight. Then I think he'll be
close in the first half. You could see a fourteen
to three, ten to three type game, and then Ba
he pulls away in a second. I don't know if
Stamford will scored more than ten to thirteen points to
(25:39):
but I'm gonna pick the over for sure because I
think by you can put up about thirty five to
forty one points in this game.
Speaker 3 (25:45):
The only thing that concerns me if I'm gonna try
to make a case for Stanford football is. There's two things.
Number One, they're coming off a bye week after a loss.
I would have actually liked them to win that first
game or over Hawaii for a number of different reasons,
right because you want them to come in and have
confidence as they enter.
Speaker 2 (26:01):
Into Lavelle Edwards STATEIU.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
If you don't want them to have a little bit
of a chip on their shoulder and kind of have
that sense of urgency about survival mode coming off of
bye week. So those two things, I would rather not
have them come off a bye week to prep and
get ready for BYU. Allocating two weeks of preparation not
the idealic thing for BYU. But in the same note,
BYU played Portland State, the worst team at college football.
(26:24):
I hope they did look a little bit ahead in
their preparation at least during fall camp as they were
looking at Stanford Cardinal. And what's good for BYU is
I think that that Bear Bachmeyer and Tiger Bachmeyer a
very smart human beings, and they know the personnel well
and they knew the scheme pretty well coming out of
(26:45):
springball with Frank Reich and his staff. So any information
commtitive information that they can provide to a Rod Kalani
and Jay Hill.
Speaker 2 (26:55):
It's a boot.
Speaker 3 (26:56):
There's a reason why Bear bachmeer. One of the reasons
why Bear Bockmeyer is the starting quarterback. The schedule is
a big key there. McKay Hillstead and Tracey Morga had
pretty good fall camps as well. I don't think it
was just absurdly lopsided that bear Bachmeyer was out performing
those two guys.
Speaker 2 (27:14):
But what Bear did provide was higher upside.
Speaker 3 (27:16):
Yeah, maybe a slightly better running ability, more physical running ability,
and he had a little bit of familiarity with Stanford
week two. And if you're gonna start up true freshman,
you want to do it on the front end of
the schedule, not the backup. Right, You're not going to
insert Bear Bachmeyer heading into the Utah.
Speaker 5 (27:35):
Go ahead.
Speaker 3 (27:37):
Rump and then the other looking good guys repping the
Royal Army brand gear.
Speaker 2 (27:42):
Love that looking good, feeling good, playing.
Speaker 3 (27:44):
Good, shout out to the fans, showing up, showing out. Also,
the other thing I would say is the talent that
clay at Stanford is good.
Speaker 2 (27:50):
It's good.
Speaker 3 (27:52):
Over the last six years their recruiting ranking composite per
two four seven, it averages out in the top forty's
top thirty five.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
It's not bad. That's good. It's good.
Speaker 5 (28:02):
That's good, real good.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
Been as they.
Speaker 3 (28:05):
Say in the Spaniel, you know what I mean, mutto Bienne.
I don't know if if that's actually a portoguez, but
I'm serious, Like they have good clay there, and they
typically have good retention, so most of the clay has
been retained. So that's the other component I'm looking at.
But let's get to know the foe through the eyes
the voice of Frank Reich. He addressed the media will
(28:26):
reap between the lives of little bit head coach of
the Stafford Cardinal earlier this week, pontificating on coming to
Provo under the lights of Lavelle.
Speaker 8 (28:35):
Hi, Frank, what were your impressions of bear Bachmeyer during
spring practices and has BYU utilized him.
Speaker 5 (28:41):
Through the first game the way that you kind of
saw him operating in springball.
Speaker 9 (28:46):
Yeah, my impressions of him were very positive. So and yeah,
just from looking at the film and watching the game
or some of it on television, you know, he's an
explosive athlete, a strong arm, you know, as a threat
to run the ball. So kind of figured that having
a little bit of that QB run game would be
(29:08):
in there with with him, and and uh, and he's
got an explosive arm as well.
Speaker 5 (29:13):
Just a quick follow up on that. Were you surprised
that he won B why you starting job?
Speaker 7 (29:19):
No?
Speaker 9 (29:19):
I wasn't surprised. Wasn't surprised. I mean, he's a talent.
He's a talented talented guy.
Speaker 3 (29:26):
Thank you, Kyle Dylan.
Speaker 7 (29:28):
So does the familiarity that you have with the bock Myers,
especially Bear, does that help with game planning at all?
Speaker 10 (29:35):
This week?
Speaker 2 (29:36):
You can give you guys an advantage at all?
Speaker 9 (29:39):
I really don't think. So, you know, someone someone here
we were talking about that earlier. But you know, we
were both ways, you know, on what we know about
Bear and Tiger, and but on what they know about us.
And this is my experience with that kind of thing
is that it usually gets overrated. So I'm not particularly
(30:02):
worried about, you know, what they're telling them about what
we do, because honestly, we've changed a good bit from
when they were here as well. And and uh, you know,
and they run a different scheme than we run. And
so I think right now we're early in the season.
I think both teams are focused on what we are
focused on our players and what we do more than
(30:24):
anything else.
Speaker 10 (30:26):
Thank you, Dylan John.
Speaker 11 (30:28):
Yeah, levering off what you just said about their scheme
being different, coach, it seems there's a lot going on
at the mesh point with that offense. I mean they've
got jet you know, jet motion, they've got orbit motion.
They have got a lot going on there at that
mesh point. Described the b hy U offense for for
Stanford fans.
Speaker 9 (30:46):
Yeah, I mean, honestly, I have not you know, I
have not looked as much at their offense and more
when I was just watching the game live because of
when it was on and we were able to watch
it live. But you know, obviously as offensive coach, I've
been focused more on their defense. But no, they're they're
(31:06):
gonna obviously, I have dynamic run game and like you said,
with you know, with quarterback being involved in the run
game and the play pass and getting him on the move.
You know, he's he's he's a good athlete, so you're
gonna get him on the move. And got a lot
of stuff, a lot of action going on. So certainly,
respect really this is a very well coached team. You
can see that they're a good football team. Their schemes
(31:28):
are very sound, you know, defensively, you know, I feel
like I'm watching an NFL defense with everything they do.
I mean, they do a little bit of everything. They're
they're multiple in every way. Their their pressure package is
quite sophisticated. A lot of stuff you see at the
NFL level, and they do a good job of executing it.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
Thank you, John Ben come back, Zach Okay. So interesting.
Speaker 3 (31:54):
Frank Reich gave a massive compliment to Jay Hill in
this defense. He stated, like they are utilizing NFL schemes,
multiple fronts, you know, pressures, blitches, coverages.
Speaker 2 (32:14):
Look, we already know that Jay Hill's a great DC,
and we.
Speaker 3 (32:17):
Know that the talent that he has coached up and
inserting the position mastery is fantastic. But I think it
means something to hear Frank Reich elaborate on the defensive
scheme and the and the coaching staff of BYU there.
I mean, you're talking to coach that has been in
the NFL for like thirty years. He's got eighty games
as a head coach under his belt in the National
(32:39):
Football League and he's sitting here pontificating about how good
this defense looks, how complex it looks, how they execute.
I think that's that speaks volumes about the future of
this BOI defense. It's an imperative to retain j Hill
as your DC, as your assistant head coach for time
and all eternity. I'm kidding, backing off of the Stanford Uh,
(33:02):
you know, sacrilege. I'm kidding, But like, for as long
as possible, we need Jay Hill.
Speaker 2 (33:08):
Hand them a blank check, tell him to fill it out.
Speaker 5 (33:10):
Let's go handim a blank.
Speaker 2 (33:11):
Check, Let's go. What do you want?
Speaker 5 (33:13):
Man hey?
Speaker 7 (33:14):
I think And he said this to Ben, I think
he's gonna be a while. He said him a kaloney
speak the same language. He lets him running how he wants.
And when you have a partnership that works, it's not
always good to go switch and beyond your own and
starts your own thing.
Speaker 5 (33:26):
But I agree with you, you need to keep j
Hill as long as possible. But that does speak volume,
right and I and I think that's the biggest thing.
Speaker 7 (33:33):
If you were to ask any big twelve coach about BYU,
what sticks out to them. I think the first thing
that will come out of the mouth is well, they
have a really good defense and Jay Hill has those
guys together. I think after this season been, depending what
he's able to do eight and four, nine and three,
Jay Hill will start to have that credit mentioned year
on going forward of Yeah, Bau's defense is no joke.
(33:55):
It's something that you want to look at because this
is the NFL coach that's mentioning j Hill, and it's
an NFL scheme.
Speaker 5 (34:00):
I mean, and I think he knows that.
Speaker 7 (34:01):
Will you make sure there Sanders look very one dimensional
when I mean, I know Travis had a big game,
but there's really only two catches been. When you keep
those guys quiet, that doesn't go unnoticed from the college
football world.
Speaker 3 (34:12):
Let's get back to the Frank Reich so sound head
coach of the Stafford Cardinal during interim head coach as
the as he addressed the media earlier this week.
Speaker 12 (34:21):
Yeah, I kind of want to getr thoughts in one
of your messages to to Ben Golbranson going on this week.
He had a rough outing week Week zero against to
why it's kind of what your mess is going into
this week and also just kind of the quarterbacks as
a whole in katese Go Branton as a rough out
and is there any chance you guys might make a switch.
Just talk about kind of your messages to go Branston
and the quarterback room as a whole headed endo this
week Week two matchup.
Speaker 9 (34:42):
Yeah, our message to the whole team is we just
need to play good football. As heartbreaking as you know
any losses, you know, but certainly a week one loss
after a whole offseason of working hard and all the
anticipation and excitement around you know, what we were doing
and how we were feeling, and then for not to
go well, you know, he just we got to learn
(35:02):
from that, and we gotta and we got to move
on and we got to stay the course. So that's
really the message not only to then, but that's the
message to the whole team. Stay the course. And we
we've worked hard, the players and coaches, we worked very
hard over the last six months to install the schemes
that we have to tweak things and and and mesh
things around what we believe our players do best. So
(35:24):
h continue to believe in what we're doing, continue to
believe in in yourself and uh, and we just have
to focus on executing our schemes.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
John playing it to at by.
Speaker 3 (35:37):
Us Let's come back gold Branson was boo Boo was
trash in Honolulu. He was not good at all, Like
he was a bad quarterback. He was a fairly highly
tauted quarterbacks. He's a red shirt s team. He's been
in that program for a while now, it's a new scheme,
new coaching staff.
Speaker 2 (35:56):
Then he's a transfer from Oregon's that's right, he's a
transfer right, six year quarterback. He's been around college football, been.
Speaker 3 (36:02):
Around college football. He's a pro style quarterback, though not much.
He's not very fleet of foot. I would actually be
more like a little bit hesitant to to declare that
by is gonna cover the spread with with like a
backup quarterback, seeing pt like the Oklahoma State situation with
Rango last year, right like coming in and running into
(36:22):
an RPO and zone Reid and he was a dual
threat quarterback that was scampering and and honestly with that
game could have got out of hand and we b
what you could have lost that game had Tannerwall not
tracked rang Gel from behind and injured him quite honestly,
you know, mid in the middle.
Speaker 11 (36:37):
Of that game.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
Yeah, On the other hand, b Way you did play.
Speaker 8 (36:41):
They played a lot of quarterbacks they were not expecting
to see U see if that quarterback was not supposed
to play at all last year it was gonna be
kJ Jefferson's show.
Speaker 2 (36:49):
I don't remember it was. It was a Ja Curry Brown, Yeah,
was that his name, something like that.
Speaker 8 (36:54):
And then then you've got you know, SMU throughout Kevin Jennings.
We were able to cover this one there, you know,
and Baylor Sawyer Robertson. People don't remember this. The kwan
Finn was the starter at Baylor to.
Speaker 2 (37:06):
Start the year.
Speaker 5 (37:06):
Five four star.
Speaker 8 (37:08):
The kwan Finn was supposed to be the starter. The
transfer I think he transferred in from a mac team.
He was a highly paid, highly touted transfer quarterback. He
started Sowyer Robertson was not supposed to play much last year.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
He played against the Bay You.
Speaker 8 (37:21):
Seem to be the team that you just throw out
the new quarterback at Brandon Rose. Brandon Rose two for
Utah and so's it's not like it would be a
new thing. But BYU did show they had they had
some struggles initially adjusting to a new quarterback.
Speaker 2 (37:37):
Yeah, and that's the thing. It's like I think these
change ups.
Speaker 3 (37:40):
Right number one, it's you know, maybe it's poor quarterback
played from these respective institutions, their respective programs. There's also injuries,
but also they're just trying to find a spark, and
they typically trying to find a spark versus a BYU
football team that is employing some NFL schemes.
Speaker 2 (37:55):
And luckily for BYU, they've been able to adapt to
it in game. But it's been tough. It's been difficult. Uh,
we'll see what happens to Nigo Branson should get the start.
Speaker 7 (38:04):
Yeah, for the Stanford card, we confirmed that Benia. There
was some talk that they could try a live shot,
but we just confirmed that it will be go Branson.
I know that was a talk, but I don't think
you'll see it back unless Barney place poorly.
Speaker 5 (38:16):
There will be I would.
Speaker 8 (38:17):
Say, by the way he gets up three scores, I
think they're gonna try it out in a new quarterback.
I think they're gonna try to do whatever they can
to get a spark. They're gonna try it out the backup,
so I expect to see the back bay he's gonna cover.
Speaker 2 (38:27):
You're gonna play two quarterbacks to night.
Speaker 3 (38:28):
Yeah, yeah, exactly there's gonna They're gonna try to find
a spark. Frank's gonna try to find a spark some way, somehow. Uh,
and that could be the with the with the Franke
Frank Reich doctor is ordering right now is a little
change up at quarterback if it gets out of hand early.
Let's get back to Frank Reichs sound head coach. Stanford
Cardinal interim head coach. As he was addressing the media
earlier this week.
Speaker 11 (38:49):
See thousand plus noisy place. I know as an NFL
guy went to places like Seattle and there were some
domes and whatnot. But that couple with a bit of altitude.
What's your sort of coach approach on those factors as
you go into the game on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (39:04):
We prepare for it, right, I mean, we've been obviously
having the bye week, We've had a few extra practices.
We've been practicing in the noise. We know that it'll
be a tough crowd there. We anticipate the noise. You know,
that'll be important for us to keep our poise. I
think our guys will. I believe our guys will do
a good job with it. The way we've been practicing
it with it in practice has been good so far,
(39:28):
you know. And as far as altitude, and listen, I'm
not saying it's not real played in altitude coaching altitude,
you know more than a couple of times, and you
just can't worry. These guys are in shape. I don't
find it to normally be a factor. You get there,
you're by the time, gain time, and you're not even
thinking about it. So we just focus on Again. The
(39:50):
message continues to be, hey, focus on what we're doing.
We'll try to rotate guys anyway we want. We wanted
to do that last week. I think we did a
good job of rotating through guys last week. We'll do
the same thing this week.
Speaker 10 (40:03):
Thank you see it? Yeah, Frank, you mentioned you'd seen
BYU's defense and seems fairly sophisticated. Who are maybe one,
two or three guys from that defense, either watching it
live or watching now some video who really jump off
the page.
Speaker 5 (40:20):
So to speak for you, well, I'll.
Speaker 9 (40:22):
Just talk more in units. I mean, right, I mean,
they've always they have very good front seven. I mean,
you know they obviously a defensive line has been very
stout and they have a fair amount of turnover. I
think they're only returning three or four starters from last year,
and last year's unit was really good, especially you know
when you most of the film we have is from
(40:44):
last year. So and then in the one game that
had obviously it was a pretty lopsided score, so you
only get a certain amount of value out of that tape.
So we're really still looking off last year. So I listen,
the tough upfront. They're gonna play odd front, they're gonna
play some even front. They do it all they and
(41:06):
they use their guys well, and they mix up what
they're doing. So, you know, we just have to have
a sound package always when you're going on the road
in an environment like this. One of the keys will
be gott to stay out of third and long in
games like this, you know, and we've got to protect
the football. Uh, you know, we got to be able
to be effective on first and second down. You know,
(41:29):
we got to be effective on first and second down
to kind of neutralize the crowd and to neutralize the
schemes that they have. And that's the other thing about
what they do. I mean, they mix it up. I
mean sometimes sometimes you know, teams that are complex on
have complex blitzes. A lot of times you don't see
those until third down in the NFL because everybody wants
(41:52):
to kind of play sound stuff on first and second down.
But this team, they'll they'll pressure on first and second
down with stuff that you might typically see until third down.
So it presents a unique challenge like that. But there's
also you know, we always look at blitz as being
an opportunity, and you know, as a quarterback, I've always
looked at as an opportunity. So you know, we will prepare.
(42:15):
I think we're doing a good job preparing. I think
the coaches have done a good job prepared for the
different things we could see and excited about the opportunity.
Speaker 7 (42:25):
Thank you, ky.
Speaker 2 (42:28):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (42:28):
So Ronnie, you want to chime in on Frank once
again elaborating on Bli's defensive front comprised of Gantletwnavasa, John
Tumbly Pey.
Speaker 2 (42:36):
We had a really nice outing in his.
Speaker 3 (42:37):
First start as as a defensive lineman for the Kougs
logo Latui on that weak side oe spot and then
on the strong side spot you have Billy Poha and
Body scooon Over that was inserted right after that I'd
include him in that starting rotation as well.
Speaker 2 (42:55):
Over under front, they're going to show a lot of
different looks.
Speaker 3 (42:59):
You could have multiple multiple fronts as well, thirty forty
fronts to be included in that. Frank really elaborating on
how specialist defense is in that defensive front.
Speaker 12 (43:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (43:07):
The reason why I wanted to comment on it go
Branson struggled in that first game of what third along?
Speaker 5 (43:11):
Right?
Speaker 7 (43:12):
He really struggled, and he mentioned that you gotta stay
out a third along on the road in this type
of environment, being coming off of BUYE. That's the last
thing you want. And the reason why I want to
praise the defensive line. Yes, I know it is Portland State,
but Jay Hills expected more, right. He challenged his guys
and I think they stepped up to the task and
did what they did. The seconds even held him the
less yards in the second half than the ones did
(43:33):
in the first. At Perkoloni to TALKI in the post game,
but I even want to mention that this game is
more critical.
Speaker 5 (43:38):
You gotta set the tone in the trenches.
Speaker 7 (43:41):
This game is gonna be one and lost, in my opinion,
in the trenches in that I really think that the
defensive line is gonna take a lot.
Speaker 5 (43:47):
Of pride tonight and stopping the run.
Speaker 7 (43:49):
I think you could see Keanu Tonavasa and Hunter Klett
have a day, I really think so. I know Keanu
draws a lot of attention, but I think what John
dalm obay I put on film, I think he'll have
some attention. But the defensive line I think we'll get
after go Branson to and I put him in third along.
Speaker 2 (44:03):
I just wanted to highlight that well, Andrew.
Speaker 8 (44:05):
I'm just gonna say this, defensively, the most important position
group for tonight's game is gonna be the defensive line.
And the reason I say that, I'm not trying to
disrespect Gole Branson or the wide receivers of Stanford. The
best player on Stanford's offense is by far their running
back running.
Speaker 5 (44:21):
Michael Ford is nice.
Speaker 2 (44:22):
He's a good player.
Speaker 5 (44:23):
The player.
Speaker 8 (44:24):
If Stanford's gonna make this a game, it's gonna be
through Micah Ford. It's gonna be through him running the
ball down your throat. They're gonna try to They're gonna
try to number one. They're gonna try to run the
ball so that there's limited possessions for BYU, and they're
gonna try to wear down that defensive line. If the
defensive line can keep Micah Ford in check, BYU wins
this game. That's the defensive key for me. It's gonna
(44:47):
start and end at the defensive line.
Speaker 5 (44:49):
And Ben not just that. We got a couple of
injury updates as well.
Speaker 7 (44:52):
You got no Joe Anthony Hall li receiver, so lil
thin and inn Jordan Anuvu.
Speaker 5 (44:57):
Those guys are out.
Speaker 7 (44:58):
So you force Micah forward to have a short game,
force go Branson to throw the ball.
Speaker 5 (45:02):
Yeah, they're thin at wide receiver too.
Speaker 3 (45:04):
Scotty Edwards and Colin Wright are healthy this week for
the Stafford Cardinal. Uh So that's that boats well for
the Stanford Cardinal. At least Scotty coming back. He was
a great defensive back for Stanford and he continues to
be as far as BYU injury updates, Waylany Lapowil probably
gonna be out, Tanakua uh questionable to out Reggie Frishnet
(45:25):
It will be a game time decision.
Speaker 2 (45:27):
Any other injuries that that we should be made aware of.
Speaker 3 (45:30):
Anybody else that we're concerned about, anybody else go down
to injury, you know, there's been some question marks around
you know, the linebacking corps.
Speaker 2 (45:38):
You know how healthy are certain guys.
Speaker 3 (45:41):
I saw, I saw Shay Bryan Strather get a little
bit deemed up last week in the game.
Speaker 2 (45:45):
You wonder, Okay, is he gonna be ready to.
Speaker 3 (45:47):
Go to backup Sialia Sarah, Well, we have to employ
Max Alford this week. You're gonna have to delve into
the depth. There's no ifsanswor butts about it. And so
hopefully BYU's front seven is built to stop the run
in micah Ford. If you do that, make this team
one dimensional. Gol Branson is not, in my opinion, a
good enough quarterback to really hurt you on the back end.
