Wall as well as radio to movie. He balled out,
had a safety TfL for BYU versus Stanford and a
pick for the Cougars to essentially seal the deal late
and in the game, Volatause Sotowala We're gonna get to
know him a little bit better in this segment, as
he pontificated from the pulpit post game for the bau
Cougar football team after a nice win over the Stanford Cardinals.

Rubies in dot com.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
All right, falatao satuwala baller shot collar. Did you want
to finish with another shutout?
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Folataw You know after the is being able to get
out of it and only allow three points to go
up is great for defense? I would say so obviously, Yeah,
it would be great to keep the shut out.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
But it's not bad either.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
You get only giving up one point five points per game?
Is this defense? I thought they were gonna skunk them,
I'll be honest, I thought, yeah, I thought it was coming.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
I think the last time BYU had back to back
skunkings was back in two thousand?
Speaker 1 (02:46):
Was it two thousand and eight? I think it was
hear you played?
Speaker 2 (02:50):
No, that was actually the year after me oh I
graduated August or what it was a May two thousand
and eight. Though from BYU keep trying to put you in
the whole nine. I would like I would have loved
hey in the nil era.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
Yeah, and I was a juke. I would have got
that d bro.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
You've been twenty ten, well, I would have got at
least an extra year back. Would have been nice, been nice,
would have been very nice. Yeah, two thousand and eight,
I think it was Wyoming Ucla. Remember when by You
beat UCLA fifty.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
Nine to zero. Yes, I do remember that. I think
it was either before or after.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
That that they ended up skunking Wyoming as well in
two thousand and eight.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
That was a good two thousand and eight. To be
honest with you, the only reason three points on the
board is because that's the NFL head coach. Understands well,
if I scored three, I don't get skunked. If that
was a college coach. I think the college coach goes
for it on fourth down. I was hearing the BYU
radio broadcast They're gonna go forward to try to go
score a touchdown, and when I saw the field goal
(03:51):
Union been, I was like, business decision. That's an NFL coach.
If that had been a college coach, I don't think
they would have scored. I think they would have gone forward,
turned it over by you would have kept it. But
I think the coach was a little bit smart at
his decision there. Yeah, there was another year and I'm
trying to find it. I had actually tweeted out the
particular stat during the game and look, it's hard to
(04:13):
do this, even versus like piss poor competition. It's hard
to limit scores.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Yeah, that's right, so fit it was two thousand and eight,
Ucla fifty nine to zero and then Wyoming forty four
to zero. That was That was the last time, two
thousand and eight. But I want to say there was
a game in that there was a team in the
nineties that also did it.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Anyway, so tough to do.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
It's not an easy thing to do, and BA almost
did it versus Stanford now Folatau. How did you feel
about your own personal performance?
Speaker 3 (04:42):
It was a fun game, definitely had a probably one
of my best games I've had in college. But I
would say it's still a lot to improve on. I
don't know, but it was a lot of fun to
be able to play and make plays tonight.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
A lot of fun making plays balling out for Brigham,
his best performance. I think that's his best performance all
time as a BYU Cougar. He's a true sophomore though
a lot of I mean, you got Tommy out there,
true sophomore raider is now it's crazy. He's actually a
tenured guy in the back or crazy man. But you
got some young talent, there no doubt about it. What
(05:16):
did you see followed out one of the best players
of the night when you were able to uh tally
that safety for the Cougar defense.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
Yeah, our coaches were alerting us screen and draw. Obviously
not that kind of screen is what they're expecting, but
you know, we were in a zone. So I just
I saw my guy kind of break back, and we've
been working on screencalls all week, and so as soon
as I saw him go back and kind of prophiel
the QB throw the ball, I just broke on it
and end up making a tackle with the rest of
(05:45):
the defense round behind me, which is great.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
That's, like I said, Jay Hill deserves a lot of
credit here with his safety. They were calling screen draw,
screen draw, screen draw, They were in zone. Prior to that,
they had run so Man's man concepts. They have brought
the house and Stanford was banking on it. Stanford was
was banking on a pressure. They didn't bring that pressure.
(06:10):
They sat in their zone and gobbled up that uh
that screen essentially and that wide receiver screen didn't work
out for Stanford. Coach Frank Reich and his crew b
YU got their safety, no pun intended. Did Stanford throw
anything at you and the defense that you weren't prepared
for fallatau, I would say.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
We were prepared for everything.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
Coach as a genius, Like sometimes I don't even know
how he knows what's coming, but he knows what's coming
every time.
Speaker 4 (06:36):
So we were ready for everything.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
Yeah, obviously Stanfords is a great team though, and they
definitely just had a couple missed opportunities. But I think
our defense is blown out and we were straps on
on the dB side and then our our D line
and the backers are getting there so fast that we
barely had a cover.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Even even if that that's a money quote right there,
Jay Hill, Coach Hill is a genius. There was nothing
thing that we weren't prepared for. We were completely ready
for anything that Stanford threw in us. No surprises now whatsoever,
pure execution, pure preparation.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
Love it.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
What did you see? What happened on that I n
t folla towel? How did you How did you get
into the passing lane and pick off that pass?
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Yeah, we were disguising all night, kind of just giving
the quarterback different looks, So I think he thought we
were man. I was showing man on the tight end,
and then our corner, our corner blitzed on the play.
So I was covering the flats on that one and
I kind of jumped out and they had a fader
on the outside, so I started to pedal with it
just to kind of bluff a little more. And I
knew my responsibility was flats and I had someone deep
(07:43):
over the top, so I was just waiting for something.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
To come out.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
And as soon as saw the out route and he
let it go, I knew I was gonna make it.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
Great play, great coaching, great scheme. Vollatawe taking us through
that progression on the defensive side of the ball, the right,
the illusion maybe of even complexity. Uh, these simulated pressures.
You show one thing, you do something else.
Speaker 5 (08:10):
Go.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Branson was fooled and he made a mistake and threw
the pick to number eleven.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
Shout out to.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
Folettaw, Now, what what strides do you think you've made
thus far since uh, you know, at the beginning of
the season, fall camp, and maybe from last year.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
I'd say, with all three of me, Tenorwall and Raider
a right, we can we compete a lot for our reps.
But I think just wherever coach will feels like we'll
fit the best reach situation he'll he'll put in there.
And so I think just keep my head down and
keep working is what's gonna get me more reps. But
also I trust when any other guys out there, that
coach is gonna have the right guys out there and
(08:46):
they're gonna make the play.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
So got a lot of talent on that back end,
good football players, and they all deserve playing time. A
couple last things, does this second year in college football
feel different than last year?
Speaker 3 (08:58):
Yeah, the game definitely feels a lot slower than the
last year. You know, coming in I was just a freshman.
I only understood really what the free safety was doing
last year, so just trying to get on the field
with that, and then coming into this year, I've learned
all the strong safety stuff, and with both free and
strong I've learned the rest of the defense. Definitely has
helped me a lot to understand what they're doing and
be able to help.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
Them with what my job is.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
And then being in the program for a year like bigger, faster,
stronger has definitely helped me to make more plays.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
And feel more confident in making plays.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
Things are slowing down.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
For final totalit he's making big time plays for Brigham.
A couple last things here, how much does that front
seven make your job easier?
Speaker 3 (09:37):
It's it's amazing, Like just having one of the best
linebacker and d line groups in the nation. Like like
I was saying earlier, with coverage, now having to cover
that that long on that one robin play, you know,
I was a little out of coverage, sorry not. And
that one play on the in the red zone when
they when they we were in man coverage and they
kind of threw it out the corner of the end zone.
Speaker 4 (09:58):
Tommy pass has had a great blitz and that will
put pressure on the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
Like so, just being able to have our defense at
home allows the DBS to be able to make a
little mistakes. Not that it's good to make mistakes, but
we all cover up mistakes with how great everyone else plays.
Speaker 1 (10:13):
No doubt about it.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Final thing, what do you take from these two games
to get ready for East Carolina?
Speaker 3 (10:23):
I think just understanding that we're a great defense and
we're able to stop the run game cover in the
past game, but there's still a lot of work to do.
It's nice to have a week so we can make
sure our whole defense and offense is all healed up.
And having the extra bye week to prepare for another
game is great, just being able to watch more film
and be ready for that game coming up.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
All right, there you have it.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
That's follow It's how Satawala in a Little Player profile,

and pontificating from the pulpit post game after a nice win,
(11:48):
after a nice dub over the Stanford Cardinal. We'll come back, though,
don't go anywhere, Still lots to get to. This is
Cougar Sports on one O three nine ninety eight point
three ESPN. The fans speak to Cougar Sports and it's
time for Cougar by kinda been.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
Criddle breaks down the latest sound bites from Cougar Athletics
here on one O three nine at ninety eight three ESPN.
I'm a fan, Welcome back Cougar Sports. Right here one
O three nine, ninety three ESPN. The fan Ronald the
three man Weaver here holding it down for Ben Criddle.
He'll be back shortly in the fourth hour. Don't go anywhere,
(12:21):
Still a lots to get to as we are recapping
all of the Stanford sound postgame previewing the bye week
East Carolina coming up next week. Cougars need to go
three to zero to finish a non conference late but
until then, gotta break down the post game sound then
to get into a little sea on a MOA. This
cougar bike is gonna be brought to you by Utah
Protective Films. He ain't hit up our guy, Jared Bledsoe.
(12:43):
He's a former BYUI receiver that's been helping the football
team Gil it's a basketball team deck out their riots.
Let him help you. I just heard from a little
birdie that a handful of people have been going. You
need to come to keep it going. He'll take care
of you. Mentioned mincrid or ESPN. You get fifteen percent
off of these. That's in fifteen percent off any service.
If you're looking for the rap tenth the crumb delete
(13:05):
for your vehicle, that's where you have to go. Give
him a call today eight zero one, eight hundred nine
to seven to sixty seven. That's eight zero one, eight
hundred nine to seven sixty seven. To schedule your appointments today,
go to Utah Protectifilms dot com. Let's jump right into
it on MOA. The guy that broke out during the
Kansas State game. The sophomore who went to ten View
High School, the native of Victorville, California. This season, he's
(13:28):
had ten rushing attempts for sixty two yards, averaging six
point two yards per carry, and he's got a tuddy.
Scored his first toudy against Stanford. Always good when you
get in the end zone, shake off that rust. Last
year he played eleven games, he started in one. He
had twenty nine attempts for one hundred and forty four yards,
and he had three tudies long of twenty four on
MOA is the future. Don't know what's gonna happen with LJ.
(13:51):
L is on pace tout one thousand yard season, Brett,
and if he does, you don't know if he's gonna
come back. Running Backs, it's a The NFL is not
for long, as they say, and running backs have a
span of six maybe what five to six years. I
was gonna say, hey, that's too long. Five to six
years is a running back now? Dereck Henry, what he
did has been phenomenal, but he fumbled last night, you know,
just for people know the most critical moment. And he's
(14:12):
thirty one. Anyway, The point is running backs don't last
very long in the NFL. So when it's your time,
it's your time. So if LJ breaks out, you don't
know if he'll come back or if he'll go true,
so is the next man up. You got some other guys.
You got Jovesa de MOONI, you got Press and Rex,
A lot of guys that like in that running back room.
But until then, the designated RB two, the backup guy
of LJ goes down, is Mo and he can carry
(14:35):
the load. He can tell the football too. Guys, don't
get it twisted. Newly married, by the way, shout out
to him, uh and the russ Dan family. Good people.
If you haven't had a chance to meet that family,
always want to give a shout out. Caught up with
this pops after practice because I interviewed him and he says, hey,
thank you for doing that interview. I said, of course,
thanks for having such an amazing kid. Teach them correct
principle because is great. They're all great, But on A
(14:57):
is one of the gonna be one of the fan favorites.
I think by the end of season. Let's get to
his question, is gonna go one by one year again?
Post game in Stanford, Siona, take us through your touchdown run.
Speaker 5 (15:09):
Well my runs. Beforehand, I felt like I was doing
pretty pretty bad. I think there was a little chip
on my shoulder for sure. It wasn't the best game
that I've played, but as we were in the red zone,
we've weren't the best at converting touchdowns to residents tonight
or yeah, touchdowns to the red zone tonight, And so
(15:31):
I just.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
I just had to get it in.
Speaker 5 (15:34):
I had to do something positive in my own head.
And so they called the play and yeah, just.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
Had to get it in, Bratt. Sometimes you and I
both know this. We go to the gym, you've got
to get it in. Yeah, even if you don't want
to get the whole forty five hour, hour and a
half workout with the son and maybe the fifteen to
twenty minute hits, a half an hour hits, you gotta
get it in. You can't skip. And He's right, you
just had to get in the end zone. And I
think that's do beneficial. I think he's gonna play very
well come East Carolina and Colorado, because sometimes you just
(16:07):
got to get the rust off and you have to
have a tough day in the office, maybe personally, and
like he says, have a chip on your shoulder. And
to be honest, you got to give Stanford credit too.
Defense in the second half did a really good job.
They have a very good defensive front BYU wasn't able
to maybe run the ball as much as they would
like to, maybe early in the first half, and when
they tried to win the second stand For was up
for the task. So I get that he only had
(16:29):
seven attempts twenty nine yards, but I still think this
is the guy you need to watch out for.
Speaker 6 (16:33):
Yeah, this BYU team as a whole, Chase Roberts and
everybody that you listen to postgame, they seem to have
this really perfect balance of Look, we get that we won,
and we're not gonna beat ourselves up about it. We're
not insecure about it. But also none of us are
pretending like this is our standard. You heard Jay say
like we should have scored a lot more. I mean, honestly,
(16:56):
in this question, it feels like he's his brain is
somewhere Else's head is somewhere else because he's so disappointed
in how the game went. And look, we think is awesome.
We think you played a solid game. To your point,
credit to Stanford, they really understood in that second half.
All right, cool, we understand the m of this team
is they have an incredible run game. They got a
(17:17):
great offensive line who frankly was getting almost three four
yards of untouched push every run, get every run play
to start that game. So what Stanford said was, Okay, cool,
watch this. We're gonna load the box. If you guys
want to throw it outside, go ahead. But I think
that's part of why is so frustrated with himself, because
eventually Stanford caught on.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
They figured out. They said, okay, cool, we're gonna come
and stop the run.
Speaker 6 (17:41):
And this team feels like even if you try to
stop us, even if you try to load the box,
it shouldn't be that easy. So I love the mentality
of where this team's at. I'm sure they're gonna come
back angry, hungry, and frankly destructive when they run through ECU.
Speaker 1 (17:56):
The defense gounna be a little bit satisfied. Jack was
happy about it shut, but he sussests a lot he
can improve. He was smiling in the post game. Maybe
some people might sailing characteristic for a Jack Kelly, but anyway,
the point is, if you're the offense, has nothing to
be happy about. He did not play up to your best.
Chip on the shoulder and you hear it, and you're right,
his head's not there. I remember sitting down seeing him.
He's kind of looking trying to think of what to say,
(18:18):
because he was very disappointed in what happened. And that's
good because when that's why I think there's a chance
that they could replicate what they did last year, humble
and hungry, because when you look at this film, you
can't be like, oh, yeah, we actually know you didn't
You didn't execute. Maybe the boys up front didn't push
as well as they need to. They did, were flagged
a little bit. Maybe you didn't hit the holes hard.
Maybe you were a little bit slow coming out of
(18:39):
the break. But SI one is still explosive. So I
think you're gonna have an opportunity to still see number thirty.
He still calling him Isaiah. Pacheco runs angry, runs hard,
bounces right off, he keeps going, doesn't know how to stop.
Takes multitude, as it says in the scriptures of Defenders,
to bring that brother down. He's sticking the lower extremely.
Let's get the number two. Cione. Tell us, how would
(18:59):
you just describe your complimented role with LJ.
Speaker 5 (19:03):
Yeah, you know, LJ is like the fantasy. You know,
he got the four just leave and all that, and
then when he's tired. I just come and try to
run downhill, try to bring a different skill set to
the field.
Speaker 4 (19:14):
And so it's actually.
Speaker 5 (19:15):
Awesome having a guy like OJ in front of me,
just being able to have someone the trust like know
that he'll get the big yards and he'll do his job,
and then being able to come in and do my
job as well. It's a fun duo.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
I don't know too much football, Brett, but I know
just enough. And Ben, if he's gonna get text messages
about this, and maybe you will get chastised, but I
think this is what you should do when LJ breaks
off them forty five yard forty nine yard big yard runs. Yes,
go back to LJ right away. But if you tap
him out of you bring ce on. End up tempo,
go up tempo, two minute drill style, keep running it
down the opposition starts to go back to what I said.
(19:52):
I've been preaching this for the longest time, ever since
the post game afterwards, talking to you know, Ben and
other media members following the game. I talked about this
with you on the podcast this morning. He gotta run
the football. They came out of that second half thirteen
play drive eight times. They run the football, go up
temple with CIONI. When LJ breaks off that keep the
(20:12):
defense tired. Don't let him. Well, you would have let
him up too, because you're bringing in a But at
the same time, unless he would be on the field
and you broke off the run, than you wouldn't. But
give it to and let him go because I believe
he's the guy if you go one two punch quick,
so only can have a lot more touchdown, say LJ.
Not because he's better necessarily, but because of the nature
of how fast you move. I like Bau's offense in
(20:33):
two minute drill, and I know Jake did last year
when he was here, but I'm looking at that. If
LJ pops for these big runs, Brett just go right
back to it, go to number thirty and keep running it.
And I think you're gonna be in the red zone
a lot more often than you think.
Speaker 6 (20:45):
The end of the first half, they had a two
minute drive that looked really good until ended up getting
stalled out there at the end. But I nred percent agree.
What excites me most about this duo is that it's actually.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
A trio ron. They have to split back formation that
they run.
Speaker 6 (21:03):
They have LJ on one side, they have on the
in the on the other side, and then in the
middle they have bar Bachmeyer, who those who don't know
he had more carries than on Saturday. Bachmeyer had twelve carries,
had seven. LJ had eighteen. So this is just a
dangerous backfield. And again, once they forgive defenses more room
(21:27):
to respect the pass game, that is going to open
up the truck with this trio. This dangerous backfield between
a LJ and Bear Bachmeyer.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
You heard it from Kilane in the first hour in
the nitty gritty he doesn't like Barlow on the shoulder
on a linebacker even though he can't run him over.
But at the same time, like you said, once you
open up that pass game, you might see forty seven
truck a lot more people, and you're definitely gonna see
number thirty and number four truck people as well. Let's
get to number three. Tell us what have you seen
(22:00):
Bear Bachmeyer in your eyes?
Speaker 5 (22:03):
I like his uh, his short term memory. I think
it's super important, especially playing at this high level of football,
to be able to just focus on the next play.
We had some bad plays throughout the whole game, but
Bear being a freshman, being a young kid coming into
this uh, this new league. You know, it was it
(22:24):
was good to see and refreshing to see that he
bounced back up after every sag or after every bad
baar or whatever it may be, and executed the next play.
So that's that's something I really like about Bear.
Speaker 1 (22:34):
That is a talent that he has. She owned is
exactly right, like Bear. Just hot back up, Okay, I
got boom hit on that. Okay, cool, sacond, no problem,
Get up, walk off the next pass, boom k pressure
my face, no problem. All right, Short, you gotta have
a short term memory. And can I be honest, I'm
gonna bring in a sport that people aren't gonna like,
but it's very true. And he played it, and Jake
played it. I played baseball, and you have to have
(22:56):
a very short memory in basketball when you play these
skill pusitions. In baseball positions where the ball is coming
at you fast, third base, second short, you screw up
a double play, you overthrow, or you bobble the ball,
you take too many steps in your footwork, you approach
the first out. Have a short term memory in the infield,
you really do. You can't think about it. Pitchers because
it's going to throw off the mental ability and you're
(23:18):
focused for the rest of it. You got to have
a short term memory. So I think baseball has played
a factor when I get the opportunity to ask to
Bear about that, and hey, Seany said this, how much
of maybe playing baseball helped you with that the nature
of the game, because it does in football, you can
you get away with that two degree because there's more people.
But baseball, being individualized the way it is, like, you
don't always get that. Like if a pitcher dwells on
(23:39):
something too long, you can't now maybe bear himself as
a quarterback, but chase my dwell on something, but the
ball might it might not be his route that play,
or it might be a running player is different. And
I'm not trying to take away I'm not trying to
say there aren't those moments, but I think just thinking baseball,
that factor applies because of how less physical.
Speaker 6 (23:55):
It is, is more of a mental dynamic and how
you think in the Almighty of one ted Lasso, here
we go be a golf goldfish, a golfish. And it's
funny that Shone mentioned this because he's not the only
player to bring up.
Speaker 1 (24:10):
This fact about Bear. He's talked about a little bit.
Speaker 6 (24:13):
Other guys have mentioned this about Bear, Like one of
his superpowers is that he's just always onto the next thing.
Speaker 1 (24:18):
He doesn't dwell in the neck, and he doesn't let
him mess it up. He is one of the most
mentally toughest true freshman quarterbacks that I've seen in a while.
That speaks a lot to his character. To be that focused,
to be that locked in at the age of eighteen
nineteen as a young man, speaks to how he was raised,
(24:40):
as he's talked about, speaks about who his parents are.
We had Hank Bachmeier on the pregame on Saturday. Hank,
they are so mentally tough that it's gonna take a
lot to break them. And for the fact that he
hasn't turned over the football tells me a lot more
about who he is and the player that he is
going to become. That mental toughness, And I'm not trying
(25:02):
to compare people. Oh, you could be a Homewreks. That's
the Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, you know, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Like,
the quarterbacks are the greatest, right you think about whether
they just they move on to because you have to,
right And I just I don't see that. Jalen Hurts
got to give your flight. He goes flastl off sly
right like I see that in Bear of just how
(25:24):
he moves on, and I said, Wow, that's that's contagious
and that's how you build confidence.
Speaker 6 (25:28):
It would be so easy for Bear to have imposter syndrome. Absolutely,
eighteen year old kid, he comes in here to be
the starting quarterback, to replace a guy who all these
teammates loved.
Speaker 1 (25:40):
They were all great friends with Jake.
Speaker 6 (25:42):
Then there's McKay and Tracon who are also ahead of him,
who are also.
Speaker 1 (25:45):
Friends with everybody there.
Speaker 6 (25:46):
Steals the job from all of those guys justifiably, so
he earned it.
Speaker 1 (25:51):
It would be so easy. And he's younger than everybody.
Speaker 6 (25:54):
He doesn't have the reps, he doesn't have the snaps,
he doesn't have the time experience with this team that
everybody else has. It would be so easy for him
to feel the weight and the pressure of I don't
know if I deserve this. I don't know if I
earned this. There's other people who they've worked just as hard.
Because Bear's a great kid, He's a nice kid, it
would be so easy for Bear to feel imposter syndrome,
(26:14):
and you never get the sense that he does.
Speaker 1 (26:16):
I'm doing a little five finger that women might do
when they're in the club at a manor do or
you check like that, that five little word, five little word.
You know what I'm talking about. D O U B
T doubt. Doubt is not in this this kid's brain
at all. I hope I spelled it right, and if not,
then people a gonna roast me for my lack of education. Anyway,
The point is Bear Bachmeyer is a very confident individual.
(26:39):
Shehona giving him some praise. Get to the final one
before we go to break number four. Is it an
advantage to have your bye week this early in the season.
Speaker 5 (26:48):
Yeah for sure, With you know, Bear trying to get
everything settled, trying to figure out everything, I think this
bie week would definitely help us get that extra film working,
be able to adjust. We need to adjust and improve
for the next week, and so I think it's a
super beneficial just to see where we were at these
past two games and then go from there.
Speaker 1 (27:09):
I have said this Brett way before Barry even got
the b YU and the whole Jake thing. Was gonna
happen and other things right, and even when Barrett committed
in those regards and Jake was still here, right in
the situation, I said, the bye week is beneficial for
whoever the quarterback was going to be, because once Jake
was no longer at the university, I said, McKay, Trason,
(27:30):
or Bear, whoever gets the job. Right, even though he
said it was McKay's to Louise Bear won the job,
that quarterback would need a chance to go back and
look at the film having either not played for two
seasons yep, or being a true freshman, and that has
been on full display. We've hit on that and my point,
Brett and I've been right about this. And I said
this to the first I repeat it again for those
that might be listening or tuning into the podcast later on.
(27:52):
I said that Bear would struggle against Temfido, and struggle
is that he would see a P four defense and
things would be maybe a little bit fast, and he
had to just I think, come East Carolina, You'll see
him be quicker, You'll see him be more sharp, You'll
see him execute things. And East Carolina's gonna be their
toughest non conference game that quarterback over there can play.
No doubt he'll be a test for Boy's defense. But
I think Bo's offense is gonna be something to be
(28:14):
dealt with in the next couple of weeks. Ay Rodd
and them are gonna get them dialed in. But that
is your cougar byte. Guys, that was brought to you

down has been critical. Stepped out for Amuma taking care
of some other business duties. Gonna get into a little
player profile segment. I'm gonna hear the post game sound
from Byuy receiver Chase Roberts has right. Chase was a
little bit on the case, had a nice d ball
pass from Beart Bachmeier. The chemistry still needs to be built.
(29:40):
That's what happens when your quarterback comes in a little
bit later in June and you haven't had a full
offseason together. Nonetheless, Chase and Bear are gonna get it right.
I think Chase, even to give you a little tease
said during the bye reps, reps reps from a certain quarterback.
This player profile gonna be brought to you by one
of our newest sponsor guy us Myers Meets and Fines Foods.
(30:02):
That's right, actually gonna be on remote next Friday, not

We're gonna be on live remote next Friday, September nineteenth.
I believe that will be the day before he takes
on East Carolina as well.
Speaker 6 (30:39):
I gotta say this. I don't care who this offends.
Brisket is the greatest meat of all time. It's brisket, Nope.
And I love me some stake. I love me some
New York Trip. I love me some New York Trip.
Speaker 1 (30:52):
Medium pull pork's good too, but brisket brisket's to go.
And you know where you gotta go. You gotta go
to Myers Meats because it's to go get it today.
It's gonna melt in your mouth. Go trust me. Grab
a full uncooked brisket, ready to go at Myers meets
Myronmeats dot Com. All right, let's get into it. Brat
Chase Roberts. Let's look at the stats of what Chase
because he was a little bit on the case this
past Saturday against Samford. Was surprised that they played him
(31:16):
as much single coverage, thought that they would double team
a little bit more. Was hoping to be why you
would be at a pound the rock established to run
a little bit more. So you can see a little
bit of Chase. But you saw a sighting. You saw
why he's gonna be an NFL receiver. And he had
five receptions for eighty four yards, averaging sixteen point eight
yards per catch, and then along of forty one he
(31:36):
dropped a touchdown pass. He talks about that a no,
he wants that one back, but without further dodo, let's
go ahead and get it to the questions that he
was presented that the media ourselves pegged at him on Saturday.
Let's start with number one, We're gonna go question by question, Chase,
how's the chemistry between you and Bear coming along?
Speaker 4 (31:57):
It's coming.
Speaker 7 (31:58):
Yeah, it just takes time, you know, obviously, with a
short time that we had when he came in late,
and with faul Cam going through some you know, different
injuries and things like that, and you try to figure
out who's the starting quarterback.
Speaker 4 (32:09):
And it's it just takes time.
Speaker 7 (32:12):
And I think it's it's been awesome to have game
reps now and to be able to get the everything rolling,
to hit on a deep ball now, and now I
think it brings the confidence to Bear. I need to
make catches myself and all the receivers as well. And
the pass games you gonna start soaring and and you'll
start seeing it soon. And right now it's it's figuring
(32:34):
things out, and it's been a great couple of games.
I think, perfect for us to start the season. We
have a bye week, now, rest up, heel up, and
then really get rolling. Get that connection even more in
the next two weeks.
Speaker 1 (32:46):
Did that connection more even the next weeks you mentioned
he dropped a toughdown pass. Wants that one back Brett obviously,
And I asked that question to start off, because I
think that's the most important question. How is the chemistry
coming along your wide receiver number one? He is QB one.
I have posed a question on Twitter how many touchdowns
will this duo have this season together? How many? Right?
Hasn't been too many thus far, they haven't been able
(33:07):
to get in the end zone. And he said it's coming.
He seemed really positive facial expression. And I think a
lot of people are gonna be very confident because you
saw the forty one yard strike. Finally they opened up
the playbook a little bit for Bear there. I think
people forget two things.
Speaker 6 (33:24):
Ay, Chase Roberts has had a different quarterback every year.
He's gonna be ru if I'm not mistaken, John Hall,
Keaton slove Is, Jake Redslov and now Bear Bachmeyer. So
this guy has literally just been full chemistry every single season,
trying to figure out the new guy.
Speaker 1 (33:42):
And then again the point that.
Speaker 6 (33:43):
He makes is we were trying to figure out what
the quarterback was for the last six months, and you
find out just over a month ago, not even a
month ago, who your starting quarterback is going to be,
and you find out it's Bear Backchmeyer, a true freshman
who had not even been at the university for longer
than two three months. So frankly for their first P
(34:04):
four game, for Chase Roberts to go, what was it
five catches eighty four yards? Obviously you'd love to see
that touchdown on the screen pass, but it was a
little bit of a hot pass.
Speaker 1 (34:15):
They'll get it all figured out for your first game.
Speaker 6 (34:18):
I never felt like the chemistry was lacking between Chase
Roberts the beerback Meyer, but it certainly has some upward
trajectory to hit.
Speaker 1 (34:25):
And it definitely will. And let's kind like this. You
mentioned up the quarterbacks. How many can I throw something else?
Hit you as INU game one reception six yards? How
about sol jam Alva Peters? How about this true? How
about those guys as well? This guy's received passes from
six quarterbacks, probably maybe seven. And that's tough. You know,
you don't see that a lot. No, you don't see
(34:47):
it that a lot, justin fields going Ohio State through
to how many guys you know, you look at that
multiple years. You'd love to see the chemistry with one guy.
That's not what Chase has been dealt. And it's crazy
that he's been able to step up time and time again.
So Chase Roberts and the chemistry with Bear, we'll come
along slowly, but surely he's very positive, lot very optimistic
about Let's continue on. Let's go Number two. Chase take
(35:09):
us through the deep catch that she had with Bear.
What was the assignment? What was the route?
Speaker 7 (35:13):
Yeah, we set it up right before you know, we
even went out to the field.
Speaker 4 (35:17):
We knew what played.
Speaker 7 (35:17):
We were running me and you know Bear talking about
it and and we've repped it before, hit it in
practice and now it's just executing in the game one
on one. Took him outside and then slipped under and
he led me a perfect ball. So that's what that's
what we do. That's by a football. We'll keep We'll
keep doing that.
Speaker 1 (35:36):
That is bou football, to throw it deep, go under.
Notice I asked that question, asked the first to us,
trying to get him to tell us a little some
some you know, But Chase red Chard Senior, he knows
what he's doing. He's not he's not a goofy at all.
He knows exactly what he's doing, how he's doing it.
But yeah, slipped right under. It looked like it was
great single coverage. You and I both were surprised how
much they played him one on one. I was hoping
(35:57):
that they can give in the ball a lot more
during the game. But again, five for five for eighty
four not bad. A spoiler alert.
Speaker 6 (36:04):
They're gonna ask him about that single coverage later on
in this interview we talked about ad nauseum. It felt
like throughout the course of the offseason, I mentioned the
stat a couple times.
Speaker 1 (36:16):
I'm gonna bring it up again.
Speaker 6 (36:17):
There was only one person in the entirety of the
Big Twelve conference was better in contested catch situations than
Chase Roberts.
Speaker 1 (36:25):
And that's statistics.
Speaker 6 (36:26):
That's not me saying that there was one person better
than him, and it was one Tetoa McMillan, who if
you didn't watch an Arizona game, man, you were missing
out last season because that kid was scary in a
jump ball situation. Only one person had more contested catches
than Chase Roberts last year, and it was Tetero and McMillan.
Speaker 1 (36:43):
So for them to go single coverage as much.
Speaker 6 (36:46):
As they have, he's probably gonna be the best jump
ball contested catch guy in the Big Twelve this season.
We shall see, but he clearly was good at it
when in position on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (36:56):
There's no doubt in my mind, if Beart throws him
a good ball, gives him a chance that you're gonna
it's gonna be There's no doubt. You saw that he
slipped underneath bear through it perfectly. The dB had no chance.
One hundred percent was behind them. Let's go number three
right now, Chase, there is some struggles in the red zone.
What do you attribute that to?
Speaker 7 (37:13):
A lot of it was stupid penalties, little things like
that that we need to clean up as an offense.
And it happens, you know, that's first couple game jitterus.
That's what happens when you start college football and you
you get going and you you know you need to
be clean, and that's that's Those best teams are the
ones that can clean up that little stuff and execute
(37:35):
in the red zone and get points on the board.
Speaker 4 (37:37):
And luckily, we have the best kicker in.
Speaker 7 (37:40):
College football and he's able to put it through the uprights,
but we need to we need to get it in
the end zone.
Speaker 4 (37:45):
And that's something that we're going to focus on.
Speaker 7 (37:47):
That's something that our offensive coordinator coach Roderick has been
so good in the past, and we need to execute
as an offense and do what we do.
Speaker 1 (37:55):
Ay harping on the rest, but the ref got it wrong.
There was no blocking penalty on the key, and that
was that whatever that was was incorrect. It took a
touch on the board. Nonetheless, even if they had have
won thirty five to three, it doesn't matter. The point
is that was wrong. But Chase is right, and I
love both things. Capature. We talk about this. They do
have the best kicker in college football, but at the
same time, they do need to get Indian zone. Both
(38:16):
of those things are true. But Chas is really honest.
I like when players just straight up to say how
it is. Chase said it last year. No, we need
to be blowing teams out by twenty thirty forty. That's
what we're capable of doing, and they're stupid penalties. That's
the Cup is back. Yeah, I mean it's very simple.
Can't have that and they'll get that fixed up, cleaned
up again. A lot of these issues that you see,
these procedural things. It's not like and I'm not trying
(38:38):
to take a shot here, but fumbling the football while
you're punt returning is different than Okay, I dropped the
pass or okay, the block. Those things can be corrected.
Those those errors, those mental errors, in my opinion, are
a little bit different to fix than the other stuff
because some of that stuff, you know, with bringing up
PK obviously a little dinged up. Yeah, you know, injury
is a little different compared to Okay, brand I had
(39:00):
my right hand out here, and I should have had
it in ideye, he can fix those. Let's go number
four with Chase. Chase, please take us through what are
the conversations in the huddle, like when you move the
football down the field and then you get stalled in
the red zone like that on the sideline.
Speaker 7 (39:17):
Yeah, just I think understanding that it happens, especially like
I was saying these first two games and things will
start clicking and Bear is such like was saying, he's
he has that short term memory loss. He moves on
and he's such you know, he's so mature in that way,
and he's able to lead the offense.
Speaker 4 (39:33):
And I think that's that's.
Speaker 7 (39:34):
A great attribute to have as a quarterback, and what
a great game to learn from and to have those
mistakes in the red zones so that we don't make
him again. Right, we can get lined up, we can
get going quick, and we can score and punch it
in the end zone.
Speaker 4 (39:46):
Do what we do. So it's it's I think perfect.
Speaker 1 (39:49):
For us, it is perfect for him, right. I think
you've noticed this too. Whatever Bear makes a throw that
doesn't work out, or guy drops the pass, there's no emotion.
You don't see it. He doesn't throw his hands up,
put his hands on his helmet. He just jogs back
to that lab. Get the guys back up, like, all right,
guess what, I'm gonna score touchdown right here. You know
it was Bruce Mitchell that had talked about touchdown on
(40:10):
this play. Gass watch you know that you want that
confidence from a quarterback and it speaks to the maturity.
And he said, what nineteen, he's a freshman doing that.
You expect that from a Chase Roberts, a red shirt
senior number five. Chase, Please tell us were you surprised
how much you were in single coverage.
Speaker 4 (40:28):
I just go out and play.
Speaker 7 (40:29):
I don't really worry about the matchups and things like that.
I just try to do my best and try to
make place for my team. So that we can win
the game.
Speaker 1 (40:41):
Oh, Brett, bred Brett, he thought about it. Yeah, that's
my favorite. He thought.
Speaker 6 (40:47):
People who don't work in the media, you don't know this,
but I'm not to put you on game with this.
When typically when a player or a coach or anyone
who's in media, when they stutter, it's because there's the
answer that they want to give and the answer that
they're supposed to give.
Speaker 1 (41:02):
And look, I respect the game.
Speaker 6 (41:04):
I respect that they're exactly there's things that you want
to say that they just they can't always say. And
I totally understand that. I'm here for it. And we
don't know what Chase was gonna say.
Speaker 1 (41:15):
Oh, I could take with him, but he smiled when
when Jake Catch asked the question.
Speaker 6 (41:19):
And that's how you know Chase is a good guy,
that's how. And we know that Chase that one thing
you know about Chase is that he's a good guy. Stupid,
I think is the most vile word I've ever heard
him say a.
Speaker 1 (41:29):
Couple of questions ago.
Speaker 6 (41:30):
But that was fun to hear Chase, because you know
the answer he wanted to give was they were putting
me in single coverage.
Speaker 1 (41:36):
Yeah, they don't take I'm that dangerous.
Speaker 6 (41:38):
But obviously he can't say that because it's a good
smart guy doing the media. We don't need to overdo
take things out of proportion, good guy, Chase.
Speaker 1 (41:47):
Because they've already don't know what told me today, but
they did that. So I agree with you. I understand
why in those regrets. At the same time, Chase, men
need to get with Keanu said, I don't think if
you played me one on one that's the best idea
for you might not work out. I think it's okay
to allude to some things that you saw. Keanu backtracking
a little bit when that injured it was an injured
(42:08):
left guard. The guy came in they like Kean and
right up above them. Yeah, and it was one on one,
and I just shook my head and says, do you
not understand who that is? Don't do that. It's gonna Hey,
there's a reason all been double team in the triple team.
If you are fifty seven straight up one on one,
he will burn you anyway. It's the same for number two. Deuce. Deuce,
don't do deuce that way because if you do that,
you're gonna get in trouble. I'll promise you East Carolina's
(42:30):
gonna double Chase a lot, because if you don't, he
gonna hit his head on the goal post. Ask Arizona State. Ouch,
never mind, don't know why I brought it up. Don't
know why I took that shot, but that came out
of nowhere. Number six, Chase, How satisfied are you with
how the defense is playing right now?
Speaker 4 (42:46):
They're awesome? You know, to allow three points the past
two games. We need to.
Speaker 7 (42:51):
I think be better as an offense. Uh, And they've
been playing lights out obviously with the turnover setting us
up in the best foot position that we could possibly have.
Now it's just finishing our drives and being able to
be the best, uh, you know, on both sides of
the ball. And I think once we can combine that
and get that going. Special teams offense defense were really
hard to beat.
Speaker 1 (43:11):
Bad Boys, Bad Boys. That was the band of the day.
I was brought to you by Rold and we ran
bad boys, Jack Kelly, Isaac Glaska. When you got those
guys canon Tonavasa Talato saw to all of who's heating
up Raider to Moody. When those guys make plays and
they flip a short field for you, Oh, the offense
loves it. Kansas State last year is a prime example.
Two turnovers right there, you had one two strike plays
(43:32):
in the end zone. Oh, if you're an offensive guy,
I see a Chase hype the crowd up because he's like,
I want to see these guys get turnovers to put
us back on the field. You love that. If you're
a fifth year senior, Eou's defense is phenomenal.
Speaker 6 (43:45):
I'm sure that only makes you feel worse. And I
mean that in the best way. But like when the
defense has given you so much and you're not able
to put it away, I'm sure that's got to make
you feel tough because you may not feel as though
you're carrying your weight the way that they are for you.
But the pushback is, Look, everybody has bad days. Like
(44:07):
that's why you marry a bad, bad day. That's why
you work with people who are great, is because you're
not gonna be on every single day. There's gonna be
times where you cannot perform, you cannot put up the
way that you need to. That's okay because you've got
a team around you who can dominate. And look, there's
gonna be times this season where the defense may get
(44:27):
let a couple get away from them that they wish
they hadn't, And the offense is gonna say, hey, brother,
don't even worry about it. Pick up, we're gonna go
get one for you, and we're gonna we're gonna guest score.
We're gonna put your bat uck out on the field.
Let you have a great opportunity to go bring this.
Speaker 1 (44:39):
One home team sport all three phases of the game,
no doubt about it all. Let's get into number seven.
Let's go number seven. What do you take away from
these wins as you get ready for East Carolina?
Speaker 7 (44:48):
Chase, Yeah, just learn from our mistakes, the little stuff
that we need to clean up. And I think when
we clean up those little stuff, we're being Stanford by
a lot more, you know than we did today. Uh,
scoring in the red zone and you know, fixing those
little things. So I think that's really it, getting on
Q as an offense and putting up more points.
Speaker 1 (45:09):
Chase has said it a few times and he's mentioned it,
the numbers, the blowouts need to happen, and he was
frank right there, Yeah, and we clean those things up,
we're being stand fired by a lot more. We are right,
if everything went well, what thirty five to three, I
think we both can say that comfort. But maybe if
it goes your way you can get forty one, forty two.
You never know. But the point is they left some
points on the board. Everyone felt that way. Offensively, I
(45:30):
even think they do. The defense was phenomenal. But speaking
of the defense offense, you're going into the bye week now, Chase,
what are you focusing on this week? Is the bye
week is now here?
Speaker 4 (45:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (45:42):
I think healing up, resting up, as well as getting
those reps with Bear, being able to get the past
game going and then getting on the same page and
learning and growing and getting that confidence in each other
as an offense as receivers, and just keep rolling. I
think we have a great I think it's been a
perfect first couple of games for us, and we'll start rolling.
Speaker 1 (46:05):
Boom shocka locka you dig yes, boom boom boom boom boom.
I got that power. I don't know why they came
to my mind anyway. The point is that's the severe
ADHD person speaking right now. You love to hear that
as a fan fans, I guarantee fans like to hear
that again. That chemistry with Bear. It goes back to
Bear's first interview. What takeaways? What do you look all?
Go score a touchdown on our first drive. That's what
(46:26):
you want to hear from players, because that's what they're
focused on. Right. They're very hard on themselves. They are.
They can tell you this. They played, I played rugby.
Athletes are overly, hyperly critical. They might not tell you that,
but they are, and they want to be perfect in
every aspect. You cannot be because that's just not how
it goes. Even Zach Wilson's perfect game of throwing in
(46:47):
Idaho patitable, there are probably still some throws that maybe
the trajectory of the ball and it's impossible to do that.
But you'd like to hear this from Chase Brett. I'll
let you close it out before we go to break
those comments about the bye week. I'll ask you this,
and I'll ask the fans this.
Speaker 6 (47:03):
If this is what Chase Roberts and Bear Bachmeyer look
like when the chemistry is not where they feel that.
Speaker 1 (47:09):
It needs to be, let me ask you this, Ron,
Let me ask you this.
Speaker 6 (47:13):
Ask me what is it going to look like when
they feel like their chemistry is on point? How scary
will that be? Is what I'd like to know. Because
the other thing about like, I think Bear had a
solid game. I give it a B minus on the game,
Like because he didn't make any mistakes.
Speaker 1 (47:32):
He didn't turn the.
Speaker 6 (47:33):
Foot, I shouldn't say it didn't make it six. He
didn't turn the football over, is what I meant to say. Now,
could they do better at getting guys involved, maybe taking
some heat off of those screen passes? Sure, the Bear
didn't have a bad game. What is it going to
look like when the upside that we know exists, the
potential that we know is there is finally achieved. This
(47:57):
is going to be a scary duo and a scary
pass game to combine with an already dangerous round game.
Speaker 1 (48:04):
Yeah, the ground game is definitely dangerous. And once you
continue to start feeding l janc On more and once
starts to click a little bit and this chemistry comes down,
it's over. It really is. For that, I remind you
two games. West Virginia always has a good defense. Michael
Coach Junior was named to the preseason All Big twelve
teen in the twenty twenty four season. He tatled many tackles.
(48:28):
I think he's still on the team him and then
a guy by the name of Smith's noted. Yeah, those
guys are or where you want to see the chemistry workout. Yeah,
Smith is their best corner for Utah that game because
you'll be what three games in the conference play just
about that'll be your fourth conference game, second home. Excuse me, yeah,
second at home. That is where you needed to be
(48:50):
clicking on all Cylindership. You have to have it there
because number the other deuce on the opposite side for
the team up north deuce deuce. That's gonna be the
matchup that everybody's gonna be watching, promise you, because Smith
is a problem and we will see if Chase is
on the case, had had you know, a few good
(49:10):
moments in the last game that they played in. But
looking forward to seeing Smith Snowden and Chase go at
it come October eighteenth. But that chemistry's got to be down,
because I promise you, if you don't have it down,
even if you do got it down and you throw
it to Smith's side of the ball might not work
out for you. Well, I'm not gonna lie. I respect
talent when I see it, and Smith Snowden is a problem.
(49:31):
He's one of their best athletes on the team, no
doubt about it. And you might get one, you might
get two, or you might not get any at all.
But we'll see. That's what they're focus staring during the
