(00:00):
Okay. So the Arizona State Fairruns from September twenty second through October twenty
ninth. That's an awful long timefor a state fair. So you're on,
you're only open on weekends. We'reopen Thursday through Sunday. Okay,
has has the Arizona State Fair alwaysrun like that? Pretty much? No,
it hasn't. Actually, we've madea couple of changes over the past
(00:22):
few years, just based on youknow, attendance, based on the you
know, how people come to thefair. You know, we've noticed that
we used to be open Wednesdays throughSunday, but Wednesdays used to just be
so slow. So we decided, you know what, let's just open Thursdays
through Sunday. And it's worked muchbetter that way. And then we expanded,
(00:44):
so we used to be a fiveweek fair and now we are six
week fair. Wow, that's apretty long fair, it is, you're
telling me? Yeah? Yeah, okay, all right, So how many
years is this stair been running?Do you know? This is one hundred
and thirty ninth year the Arizona StateFair has been running. Before it was
(01:07):
a state we used to be calledthe Arizona Territorial Fair. So after the
Arizona became a state in nineteen twelve, it became the Arizona State Fair.
Okay, all right, and wherephysically is it located again, could you
give us an address? Yes,we are in Seeings, Arizona. Address
(01:27):
is eighteen twenty six West McDowell Road, Phoenix, Arizona, eighty five zero
zero seven. Okay. So oneof the first questions it always comes up
about these things, is the parking, especially for seniors in the handicap parking.
So what's your parking situation like?So we have two parking lots available
(01:49):
for our fair goers. For fairgoers, we have the North lot,
which is twelve dollars to park andyou will find ada possible parking lot there.
You will also have in that sameparking lot our VIP parking, which
is reserved pre booked parking only forthirty dollars and it's right in front of
(02:12):
one of the admission gates, sonot much of a walk, barely anything
get out of your car, presteps in your inside affair. So that's
always, you know, a goodyto have, but again it is limited
capacity and you have to be prebooked. Then we also have the West
lot, which is only placed oneight dollars. It's a little bit of
(02:34):
a walk, but it's still fairlyclose. Both very affordable price. Yeah.
So those are two parks lots thatwe have here at the fair.
Again, we have ABA accessible parkinglot in our north lots. Lots of
space is available, so anybody whoneeds to say us that will have it.
(02:55):
Okay. So one of those thingsI don't like, y asks a
senior two is what are the restroomfacilities? Like? We have facilities all
over the fairgrounds, mainly where allthe buildings are at you'll find a restroom
there. H inside the call ofCum you do have an ADA accessible if
(03:19):
you come to a concert, therewill be ADA accessible bathrooms as well.
So anywhere in the fairgrounds that there'sbuildings around, you will find restrooms inside
the buildings. But also there willthere are you know, temporary restrooms all
over the fairgrounds as well. Youknow these things are so big. Do
(03:40):
you like have a map that youhand people when they come in. We
have a map on our fairgrounds website, so az State fair dot com.
You will find a map there thatyou if you know you're looking for restrooms,
you can click restrooms through a filteroption and it shows you all the
restrooms available. And we also havea app that you can download if you
(04:02):
want to, you know, haveit on your phone already. It also
has a map with all of thoselocations listed as well. And then well
if you are on the grounds, they are printed maps, big big maps
throughout the fairgrounds where you can goand see, you know, what you're
looking for and it's listed. Wealso have video screens all over the fairgrounds
(04:25):
where it has the you are heremaps as well, so it tells you
you are here, you know, this is what's around you. And then
we also have our you know, customer service reps all over the fairgrounds as
well that can help you there inthese great orange shirts and Arizona State Fair
and they will let you know theclosest West room as well. And also
(04:46):
refillable water bottle stations. We haverefillable water bottle stations all over the fairgrounds
as well, so if you know, you can bring in a empty water
bottle water Tannis, sir and fillthem up all over the fairgrounds for free.
All right, And if I wascoming in the gig with a bunch
of kids under twelve, where shouldI go first. Oh man, Well,
(05:10):
if you come in with a bunchof kids, I know they're gonna
want to write the rights. Sothere isn't there's a section in the carnival
area where a lot of the rightsmeant for kiddos are are there. You
know, if you go to ourwebsite acctatecare dot com, you can look
at all the rides we have onthe ground and you can you can filter
it through height requirement, tickets ticketsneeded, and it gives an idea of
(05:35):
how many rights are available depending onyou know, how high, how the
heights of your kiddo, and alsohow many tickets you're gonna need. There's
also great educational exhibits in the agriculturalcenter, kind of teaches the kids,
Hey, you know, this iswhere your food is coming from. This
is how you grow tomatoes. Thisis how you raise a cattle, how
(05:58):
you raise the dots. You know, this is what chickens looks like when
they're just worn. This is howyou milk a cow. You know,
a lot of kids growing up inthe city don't know that part of life.
And so the Agricultural Center at theFairgrounds there's always such a great treat
to teach kids, you know, how how this happens. And you know,
in our in our cities, especiallyin the state of Arizona, you
(06:21):
can also take them to the competitiveexhibits where you know, people enter their
prepositisy, their fine arts, they'reculinary, they're quilt, they're sculptures,
all that, and they compete fora blue ribbon. And that's really fun,
you know, to go see thehow talented our neighbors are in here
in Arizona. And that's always funfor kids to see as well. So
(06:44):
and then after that, you know, you can always grab a treat,
grab an ice pink tone or contcandy, corn Douk, turkey leg or
one of our you know, newfair food items that the kids want to
try and you know, enjoy thefair as well as that. Okay,
so where I mean there probably asfood as you go in the gate,
right, it's probably is it allover the place. It's all over the
(07:05):
place. Yeah, So you'll findfood vendors look to all throughout the fair
grounds. You will not you willhave all these different smells. As soon
as you walk in you really wantedto, you know, see where your
nose takes you first. But asyou know as you'll you can grab a
food food vent, you go goto food vendor, grab a circular I,
(07:25):
grab ice, some Cohan Fright twinkies. And then besides that, there's
a stage where you know there's ahypnotist doing you know, its show or
you know, look at the WildlifeZoo stage where there's going to be live
demonstrations on different animals as well.Like you have like four H buildings and
(07:45):
you're talking about animals, so there'sfour H yes, there is four H
and then as well as a pettingzoo, so it depends on you know
what. You know, you canvisit both. They're both inside the Agricultural
Center. So there's a different youknow, every week there's different shows.
The first weekend we have the rabbitsand caves, and then we have sheep,
(08:07):
then we also have goats the nextweek after that, and then on
the third weekend of the fair isopen, we have Youth Week. You
know, Youth Week is always sospecial to us. You know, all
the kids come and show all theanimals that they've raised to show at the
Arizona State's Fair. And then afterthat we have Education Week, and then
after that we have very dough andall that good stuff. Yeah, I'm
(08:33):
just laughing. It's a lot toremember, Okay, yeah, it is.
It is. Every week there issomething different in the Agricultural Center.
There's different you know, different showshappening. So you know, if you
decide to come every you know,a different day every week, you'll always
find something new at the Agricultural Center. So what's the temperature been running in
Phoenix lately? Ooh, right now, it's at ninety five, So it's
(08:56):
not terrible. No, it's nottoo bad. And humidity is pretty pretty
low, isn't it. It ispretty low unless it rains, and we
did get rain last night, soit's a little humid right now. But
honestly, I don't mind it.I'd rather than you know, than the
hot burning fun. But you know, opening weekend, it looks like we're
(09:16):
gonna get good weather. It's gonnabe still in the nineties. So how
many buildings, I mean, there'sbuildings that people can go in to cool
off. So if I the seniorpersons coming in the gate again, where
would you say I should go first? Oh? Man, let's see.
Well, if I really enjoy goinginto the Colisseum, because inside the coliseum
(09:37):
is where you have all your competitiveexhibits. So again you're you're quilt,
so you're culinary, your demonstrations. You know, you can find woodworking demonstration,
leather making demonstrations. Uh, youknow you'll have to see all the
co photography, sculptures, fine art, all that is in there, and
that you can spend hours in therejust looking at all the art, all
(10:00):
the competitive exhibits. And then alsomost of this stuff is for sale,
so if something catches your eye,you can buy it. Not cool,
Yeah, there's great artists in there. Also. One of my other favorite
parts of the fair as a shoppingpavilion. Inside the shopping pavilion you'll find
hundreds of vendors and these can rangefrom so many different things, but one
(10:22):
of my favorite ones is a shecomes every year and she sells purses,
you know, leather purses and they'reall crafts handcrafted from Mexico. So there's
great, great quirky things that you'llfind inside at a shopping pavilion that you
probably won't see it at the shoppingmall. If you know, it's it's
stuff that you know. These vendors, they get their business all over the
(10:46):
United states, They tour, theyyou know, they travel, so it's
a lot of really cool things thatyou'll not you'll not find anywhere else.
So I like taking a taking, you know, a tour through there to
the shopping pavilion and then I forthat, you know, my favorite the
agricultural center, cute little animals, and but my favorite for sure is all
the competitive exhibits and all the shoppingthat we have to offer. Okay,
(11:13):
all right, so is the Ihave to ask this question. I get
different answers from different state fairs andplaces. Is the carnival admission included with
the price of gate admission? Itis not. The carnival is noted with
gate admission. So our gate admissionis fifteen dollars. Ages eight and up
(11:33):
so seven and under are free. And once you come in, you go
to the carnival ticket box and thenyou buy your tickets there. You can
also buy your tickets on their app. It's much easier to do it on
the app. We do have unlimitedright wristbands on Thursdays. So if you
have someone who is a thrill seekerwants to ride every ride available to you
(11:56):
know that that we offer. I'ma ride risk bands called fifty dollars and
you get to write any ride youwant a limited times. And what about
ground decks. What have you goton the grounds? Oh man, we
have tons of grounds entertainment. Wehave everybody favored the grand Stands series and
at the grand Stands every weekend there'ssomething different. Opening weekend, we have
(12:22):
monster trucks. After that, wehave Figure eight racing. After that,
we have rodeo, both Native Americanrodeo, high School rodeo. After that
we have extreme bull riding, whichis last year was one of the first
year we did it and it wasso awesome. That's October twenty one.
Then we have quarter midget racing andagain to close out the fare, monster
(12:43):
trucks. All that is free withadmission. You don't have to have a
separate ticket. It opened to anybody, all ages. And another fun thing
we had is tribute bands happening nightlyat the backyard stage. Every night there's
the contribute band. They have twosets every night six thirty and I mean
(13:05):
sorry, six pm and eight thirtypms. And this can range from you
know, brunomr zon Jovi, PrinceTina Turner, Michael Jackson, Queen,
Rolling Stones, you name it.There's a tribute band happening every night at
the backyard stage. The evening entertainmentwas you have paidv entertainment right. That's
(13:26):
also we have concerts as well.We we the Arizona State Payers known for
having great concerts every year. Unfortunately, due to COVID twenty twenty we didn't
have them. Twenty twenty one andtwenty twenty two we didn't have it as
well. So after a three yearhiatus, we the coliseum concerts are back
(13:48):
this year and we have six concertslined up. We have three country concerts,
Walker Hayes, Brothers, Osborn,Carly Pierce, and then we also
have an R and B show NeoLatin, Becky g and then Violent Fems
and those those are all held insidethe Colosseum. The Colosseum but they require
(14:15):
a paid ticket. So these ticketsrange from twenty five dollars to one hundred
dollars depending on the section that youchoose. But all of these tickets have
include fare admission, so if onceyou buy the concert ticket, you do
not need to buy a fair admissionsit's included with it. So they can
buy the cancer ticket at the gate. Yes, you can buy the but
(14:39):
I would it would be better ifyou buy it online. That way,
you have it already in your phoneand you just can walk in with it.
They scan it you walk in,you don't. You don't have to
wait in line, you know, just come in with it. That includes
your fare admission. So, forexample, if you buy a twenty five
dollars ticket to Violent Fems, thatincludes your fifteen dollars admission fare admissi and
(15:00):
so technically it's a ten dollars concertticket. It's you know, it's such
a great deal. Oh that iscool. Yeah. So so what hours
generally is this the sair run?So opening weekend, we actually have special
opening weekend hours every day Friday twentysecond, Saturday to twenty third, Sunday
to twenty fourth, we open atfour pm. After that from September twenty
(15:24):
eight all the way to October twentynine that we open at noon. You
must have a lot of people thatwork with at the fair, right,
yes, we do. We hireover a thousand seasonal workers. Okay,
all right, you know that thatputs the third together and works the fair.
(15:46):
Yeah, so that's a lot ofwalking around for a lot of people.
So do you have chairs or somethingthat people can rent or oh to
or work or people who come tothe fair, people who come to the
fair like handicap people or people.Yes, you know, you know,
(16:06):
we at every gate we have ifyou want to, let's say, rent
a scooter. You know sometimes thatevery gate has a copper Star Medical Supply.
They're the ones who provide all ofour rental equipment. They're available at
every gate to make do They alsooffer pre registration, so if you want
(16:30):
to make sure that you have theright one that you want, go online
to our website acctfair dot com.You can rent your your your scooter or
whatever it if you would like torent for the day there. It's great,
it's easy. And then there's lotsof seating areas around the fairgrounds,
lots of them. We have workedtremendously over the past three years to really
(16:55):
up our seating arrangement areas just becauseyou know, we want to make sure
that we're providing everyone so the best, you know, possible experience at the
fairgrounds. And a lot of peopleare like, we want more seating or
you know, seating areas, shadedseating areas, so we have done that.
The backyard is a great place toreally sit down with a family,
and you know, there's lots ofpicnic tables there where you can grab you
(17:18):
know, your fair food and goenjoy the backyard stage where there's tons of
community stage performers as well as thetribute bands at night. Hey, Branda,
what's your favorite fair food? Oh? My favorite fair food is a
fried bread. I love fried breads. Okay, It's very traditional, but
I love it. It's my favorite. Every every Friday, I call it
(17:40):
my fried bread Friday Day and Igo enjoy a nice fry bread. Okay.
So the Arizona State fair Grounds, you have other events for their crew
during the year. I have interviewedthe Maricopa County Fair before. So what
else goes out? What else goesout at the fair Grounds besides those two
things, besides Maria Pobec County Starand arass say for there's tons of We
(18:02):
have tons of partners that come everyyear to conduct their events at the fairgrounds.
We have the gun Show, theBridle Show, we have two dog
shows, and we had tons ofe the ai A sports shows that happened
here, and we also have thegraduations for the Phoenix Union High School as
(18:22):
well, held inside the coliseum. So lots of lots of partnership that we
have had over the years that weprobably host their events at the fairgrounds.
Okay, so what's coming up afterthe fair? I believe we have a
gun show. After the fair, there have gun show in November, I
believe, yes, and then afterthat we have the ANLS it's lifestock show
(18:45):
that happens in December January during theNew Years, they come and do that,
and after that we start all ofour event seasons. So from November
to about May, tons of eventshappen name at the Fairgroom. There's not
one weekend where there's not an eventhappening for sure. Okay. Well,
(19:07):
I thoroughly enjoyed talking to it.Sounds like it's going to be a great
time and hopefully people can listen tothis and the interview will help them out
as to how to park and howto get the tickets. Yeah, for
sure, go online as state furdot com. You'll find all the information
that I would say. Try toget your tickets online so that you know
you have them already on your phoneand you don't have to you know,
go at the gates. Spend youknow, save time, save money,
(19:30):
and get to the fund faster.Sounds great. Thank you, Brianda,
Thank you so much. Bybye.Appreciate it. Bybye.
