(02:01):
of the Friday night specials they performRocky Horror. You're a Mammoth County,
New Jersey, So without any furtherdelay, we will bring on Ryan.
Hello, Brillian, welcome, Hello, and we have cut. We're just
we're just here for Ryan. Yeah, we're just the Bank Club. Thank
(02:22):
you so much. Means a lot. It's been a hard week. It's
only Tuesday. It's only Tuesday.Hi, Cheryl, that's my sister Jillian.
Hello Jillian. Um so welcome guys, thank you so much for being
here with me tonight. Um,thank you for having us. You're very
welcome. That's my mom. Weall love Rocky Horror, so everyone's really
(02:46):
excited. Um. So, Ryan, tell us a little bit about yourself.
What's your background? How long you'vebeen doing this. I have been
doing Rocky for It's going to betwenty years in November. Wow. Um
and to think I'm only nineteen, that's a fucking lie. Um. I
(03:08):
am. The three of us runthe show. I've been running it for
most of that time. I runthe business side of the show. So
I produced a show. I handlea lot of our theater relations, uh,
money, growth, where we're going, where we've been that type of
end of the spectrum. Aside fromperforming. Uh, you know, I
(03:30):
handled that nonsensical, stressful part ofthe operation. That's a lot. That's
a lot to do. It's abunch. Yeah, And I have several
jobs and I do that one. This one's for free. Yeah that that.
We'll get into that in a fewminutes. But um, um,
Kat and Steve, how how longhave you been doing this? Do you
(03:52):
want to get first first? Uh? I have been on cast for nine
years, coming up on nine years. I joined in two thousand and twelve.
I started coming to see the Friendand Night Specials cast in two thousand
and nine. Um. I'm thetechnical director. I'm also a professional lighting
(04:12):
designer, so I toured with bandsand stuff. Um so I'm just writing
my own show. Looks good, best look at show in the country.
Excellent. You said that out loud. Oh, I'm sorry. Are we
going to have like a gang fight? We'll let me more. That was
like so six years ago. We'relike, we're like four and oz in
(04:33):
gang fights. We're good. Idon't let them come so ked, How
long have you been doing this?Um So, I've been doing this now.
I just celebrated my eleven year anniversaryof doing this. UM. I
joined in two thousand and ten.UM. I started seeing Rocky though when
I was like well or something. My mom took me. Yeah, my
(04:58):
mom took me to see a stageproduction one time time, and it's just
been downhill ever since. So I'mjust still rolling downhill. So I'm the
performance director, So I'm in chargeof like auditions, training performers, getting
performers on the stage, helping themget costumes, you know, writing the
cast lists, kind of organizing ourcrazy theme shows and all that fun stuff.
(05:20):
On top of performing, we allhelp also perform. So, UM,
do you think anybody that's watching doesn'tknow what Rocky Horror is? Oh?
I would, I would. I'dbe confused if there was someone that
didn't. Yeah, people still cometo the show and don't actually know what
it is. I make that jokeall the time that people come to the
show and they don't realize it's amusical. Oh yeah, and it is
(05:45):
YEP. I was going to addressthis comment later. Jillian says, who
do they all play specific characters?Do they change often? Before we get
into that question, I'll bring itback up later. I just want to
know, Like, I just wantto talk a little bit about like what
got you involved in this? BecauseI gotta tell you, I've seen you
guys perform at least four or fivetimes most when you were in Aberdeen,
(06:06):
and I every time I left,I was like, I wonder if I
can join the cast because it justlooks like so much fun. Yeah,
you gotta ask. No, we'realso hiring if you want to, if
you want to audition to the showand say hi, come to the show
and say Hi, Hi a littlebit Hi Christy. Um, So what
(06:31):
got what? What spurns your interestin this? Ryan? Because I mean
you're you're in there, You're committed. Yeah. You know. So when
I was in high school, youknow, well not even high school,
I guess it was maybe eighth gradeeven Uh you know, I I knew
of it. I didn't really knowwhat the hell it was. Like.
I knew it was something I sawon hot topic, Like I remember seeing
like the postcards and stuff. AndI had friends, I had friends who
(06:56):
started going and uh when when wewere in Bridge, uh the woman the
show you see a Millsex County anduh, you know, they tried to
explain it to me and I reallycould not grasp what the hell they were
trying to explain this was. It'sa thing where people, Hello, it's
a thing where people are yelling, people are throwing things. And I just
(07:17):
like, you know, they putit on the TV. He's yelling ap
lines and I go, I don'tknow what this is. They're like,
we just gotta gotta, we gottatake you. So they take me.
I'm fifteen, sixteen, I'm terrified. Um. Uh, you know when
you're when you're a quote unquote virgin, meaning someone who never has seen the
(07:41):
movie before in the theater. Uh, you know, we still do that
kind of stuff, but we don'ttake it as seriously as they did back
then. Back then, if youwere a virgin, you were bad and
to be treated as such. Uh. So, you know, there's a
lot of people yelling and screaming, and it felt like they were all yelling
and screaming at me a bit.You know, they really were, and
I and I wasn't the only one. It was me and a fifteen other
(08:05):
uh scared strangers, and so youknow, I just found the whole space
to be very riveting. Uh youknow, and I think I left saying,
well, I I was cool.I don't know if I'll do it
again. And then, you know, as time went on, you know,
I found myself in a pecarry situationwhere I'm like, yeah, I
don't really have much going on.I'm feeling kind of down. I got
to do something. And then Ijust kept going and kept going, and
(08:26):
eventually they're like, because my mydear friend was on the cast at the
time, and they're like, you'rethis, can your friend just do this
now? He's here every week?We need people. And then I'm like,
oh, okay, I guess I'lldo this, and you know,
and then I threw myself into itlike an animal, as one does.
And you know, when you eatlike this, what does Ron swants to
(08:50):
say? Do one thing whole lastinstead of doing a lot of things half
ass, and I kind of sideyou know, I'm gonna whole ast this
and uh I've been whole lasting itfor twenty years. Yeah, yeah,
yeah, thank you a little bit. That's a wonderful little bit. She's
a huge supporter of the show.So um yeah, let's let's go to
(09:13):
your next What got you involved?Uh, well, my first time seeing
it, my mom took me,I remember, because it was it was
the Rocky Horror show, but abunch of her friends were doing it.
Yeah. Um, And I waslike it was the summer. I was
already in bed and she's like, get up, we gotta go. I
was like, it's almost midnight. She's like, I know, we gotta
go. I was like what inthe like, I'm like eleven, I'm
(09:35):
like, what the hell is happening? And we go and I just remember
she's like, I want you tomeet my friend. And she was a
beautiful, like six foot five tall, drank queen. My mom's like,
this is my friend. I waslike, oh my god. And we
were the front row. It wasme, my mom, my brother,
her best friend, and the personplaying doctor Frankenfurter came and sat on my
(09:56):
mom's lap and draped his legs acrossme and my brother, and my mom
said the look on my face, she was like, oh no, this
is not going to be the endof this. And obviously that's true.
So then I'm like in school andlike I met the only other person in
like middle school, in like sixthgrade that had ever heard of Rocky Horror.
We started going. We actually sawthe Montclair cast first, and then
(10:20):
we're like this kind of far.We found Aberdeen was a little bit closer,
and then basically I was just tryingto audition from that point on.
Ryan actually had to turn me downlike two or three times for not being
old enough. Before I was aliberal child, were a child, and
I was not going to jail fora child. Yeah. So I actually
ended up joining cast before I gotmy driver's license because I failed my drive.
(10:43):
But I was seventeen when I joined, and here we are, excellent
and Steve, how'd you get involved? I kind of come from a rocky
horror like lineage in my family. You're like, I'm a legacy. My
uncle performed in a cast to NewYork. I'm not totally sure if it
(11:03):
was the original, like what wasit to play the playhouse? The original?
But it had a long run atthe eighth three playoff. Yeah,
so I'm not sure if it wasat that theater or maybe one in Brooklyn.
But my uncle performed on a rockyor cast. My mom did for
a little bit. Um. Ijust remember as a kid, like watching
you know, pop up video onMTV around Halloween time, the time warp
(11:24):
would always come on, so likethat song was always that song, that
like stuck in the back of yourhead for a little bit um and then
you know, you know, earlyhigh school comes around. My partner at
the time one to go for likeher sixteenth birthday. So we just found
we just googled Rocky Horror, NewJersey, and lo and behold, Ryan's
beautiful whole ass showed up. Youknow, thank god, thank god it
(11:50):
thank god. At that time,I'd spend so much money to make sure
that Rocky Horror New Jersey actually tookyou. Yeah. Us, So we
went for the first time time, and uh ever since then, it was
almost every week after that for me, you know, I would bring my
friends and like my friend you know, me and my friends would go.
It would be like what first week, second week, third that would be
like I can't make it, andit'd be like, well, I'm still
(12:11):
going. So I would go bymyself sometimes and uh, you know,
I was always into like production interms of like lighting and sound. That
was always my thing. I wasnever really the person that wanted to be
on stage, and I liked lightsand I like sound. So I saw
an environment where I could like reallylearn a lot, you know, and
uh, I just took it Kathleen'shere. Um, I guess the fank
(12:39):
Karen says, the eight Streets playEighth Street Playhouse. That was. That
was the time. My mom justtexted me and she was like, did
you mention the show? I tookyou too, Yes, Mommy, I
did. She did good. Um, well, that's when it comes to
advertising. I did right. Idid the parental advisory in the beginning.
(13:01):
So oh I saw that. I'mlike, it looked very much like ours,
Like it was almost like word forword. I was like, wowee,
we run one only curse in oars. I think that defeats the purpose.
But they're getting the warning. Um. So you guys have been doing
this for so long, and beforethat you you were going to see the
(13:24):
shows. So does it ever getlike repetitive or somehow? No, I
don't really have an explanation for why. It just somehow doesn't. Well I've
I guess I've seen your show atthe show in Aberdeen quite a few times,
and each time it was it wascompletely different. Well, you know,
we have we've always had the privilege. I'll use the word privilege because
(13:48):
we were a weekly show for somany years. I mean, the show's
legacy of being weekly was over twentyyears, even before I came around.
Um, it only just went scaleddown because of COVID and we're kind of
adapting to a new world. Um, because you're doing the show every week,
it gives you the opportunity to doother things. So we had the
(14:09):
opportunity to do theme nights. Sowe had the opportunity say, hey,
this is not just regular Rocky Horrorthis week. You might want to come
see this. And also, youknow, we for a long long time,
we did make a reputation of doinga lot of stuff before the show,
like pre show is like original originalcomedy sketches and stuff like that.
We made a legacy into that.We made a reputation for that. So
(14:30):
that was one other thing where peoplelike, I gonna see what the fuck
these people are gonna do this week. It's gonna be something ridiculous, and
that that became a thing. Soit you know, we find ways to
to not make it stale. Yeah, my friend Dave here says, here's
a bit of sacrilege. He's neverseen Rocky Horror. Well, we are
going to have to change your poorbastard. We are going to have to
change that we're right behind you.I chokes on you. Guys. We're
(14:58):
actually performing the whole show right now. Oh man, would I love that
it's just Ryan playing all of thecharacters and all of the lines with different
hats. Yeah, a lot ofhats. Like a lot of hats,
A bin of hats. I'd imagine. Who do you keep all your costumes
and stuff? Like do people takethat stuff home or do you have like
(15:18):
a storage place? A little bitof both. So a lot of people
will have their like you'll have likeyour main costume mostly, but like we
as the cast do own some solike Riff and the Gentis space suits for
example, we own I think fourof them as a cast, so we
got like different sizes so people don'thave to worry about that. Um.
So we have like some things, but a lot of it. People own
(15:39):
their own stuff, and a lotof people you want to own your own
stuff too. Like once you becomea character, and like you find like
the character that's like your own stuff. Yeah, but like once you find
the character that fits for you, like you become you basically end up becoming
that person. Like when I firststarted playing Columbia, like that just became
my personality, so like my Columbiatailcoats one of my most price possessions.
(16:00):
Yeah, I always find myself.I always find myself dressed as Brad in
the weirdest places, Like every oncein a while I'll put some on Facebook.
It's like, well, I'm dressedas Brady in a parking lot in
such and such. I've burned myFrank heels to so many people's like weddings
(16:21):
and different fancy events. They're reliable, well, they were. The most
intense one was the time that wasnot long ago, which was two years
ago, that I found myself dresseda Frank and further in public in the
sun myself, like, it doesn'tjust happened. Oh no, there needs
(16:41):
to be context here. I'll putthis away. I used to play Frank
a lot. I do not considermyself a great Frank. I consider myself
an entertaining Frank, but not theone you want to see if you're hey,
I looks like a movie. No. But we did a small Pride
festival in Red Bank. It wastheir first one ever, and I realized
(17:03):
there was people were in a park. I am full on dressed as Frankenfurter
and there is sunlight. I amnot used to that in sunlight. It
is dark. It is a darkroom. I can't see people, and
I'm like, well, there's nogoing back. That was a that was
very surreal because I'm like, Iusually played a little safer than that.
(17:27):
But all right, So I justwanted to get back to Jillian's question here.
She says, who do you allplay m specific characters or do you
change often? We work with therotating castlest so we have lots of cast
members that play all sorts of differentroles, but like everyone always ends up
finding like their like niche of likecharacter or characters that they typically play.
(17:51):
Brad, Brad is my spirit animal. I've identified with Brad since I was
young because I was not I wasvery well I still am, I mean,
very very private, very not likewhat you actually see when you come
to the show. And I identifiedwith him because what is Brad. He's
(18:14):
a straight, straight laced guy who'sconfused as fuck as to where he is
and terrified by everything around him.So I'm like, I identify with that
guy. I can do that becauseI wasn't acting, So yeah, you
know, I mean, Brad isstill my rider die. It's just getting
(18:37):
harder as I get older. Ifind myself when Brad falls during Damna Janet,
I always say, it's taken me. I go. That was easier
to get up off the floor whenI was eighteen, Not so much anymore.
There's a lot to be said aboutthat. I got to grab something
and pull myself up. Nothing likemy riff though, being all over the
ground. We'll get you a squattypotty. Don't worry, frigging get me
(19:00):
a rascal. We're just gonna hirepeople that their only job is to get
you back off the ground. Imean, you can do that. I'm
sure we have people that will dothat. Frank's Rocky Horror season in Bakersfield,
California, last for two months.Starts in September, then goes to
Halloween. It's always rocky horrors, always rocky. It's always Halloween and then
(19:22):
California. California is one of themost densely populated rocky horror states in the
country because rocky, because it's abig fucking state, and there's a lot
of freaks in California. So there'salways a lot of rocky horror in California.
Always has been, not lately becauseLa was very very lockdown. Um
but there will be again soon.So yeah, so Kat, what's your
(19:47):
favorite and you mentioned um um yeah, so I guess it kind of also
comes with being the performance director thatlike I go through like phases of like
who my favorite is, Like Columbiawill always like be like my girl role,
which is funny because I actually auditionedas a Magenta, but we all
knew that that was wrong when thathappened, which was not a Magenta never
um. But lately, my tworoles that I like playing the most are
(20:11):
Eddie and Riffraff. Like I wasRiffraff the other night and I still am
walking in pain, Like I hadsuch a good time and I was all
over the place and it hurts, but it was fun. Baby, I
play brand, I play Eddie.H anybody really but uh yeah, I
(20:32):
identified with Riff. Riff was thecharacter that I auditioned as, and you
know, easy man, Yeah, you can tell I'm kind of weird and
like, oh, I'm a littlequiet, and I think Riff is,
you know, weird and quiet, yeah, and a little greasy. Yeah
(20:56):
weird. That's a synonym for oncocaine. I like, I like riff
Raff, because at least in ourcapacity, riff Raff is a character that
can really like break the fourth walland engage with the audience. And you
know, I in real life,I'm I'm you know, closed down,
and I'm quiet and I'm shy.But when I'm on stage and I'm playing
(21:17):
a character, I'm a whole ass, as we like to put it.
So you know, I'm running around, I'm screaming, you know, showing
off body parts. Within reason, within reason, we comply with the law,
thank you very much. Yes,we have to support that. Uh
(21:41):
So it gives me a chance tolike be something that I'm not in real
life. And that's kind of fun. I think that's that's such a main
draw to all of it. Right, You get to be you, to
explore all of this other stuff thatmight be a little tiny facet of your
personality, but you get to liveit, and you get to live it
so loudly and so colorfully with objectsbeing thrown at you. Yeah. Yeah,
(22:06):
yeah, they stopped. Let usthrow a rice though it's a bummer.
Yeah. We talked about that alittle bit um in our pre interview.
Um, that's okay, I getit. Yeah, I'd imagine that
it's got to be difficult to sortof throw stuff around during a pandemic too.
That's also a big factor. That'swhy we stopped having blowing noisemakers.
We didn't want to aerosolize the virus. We figured that might be a bad
(22:30):
look. So now we have alittle handy Yeah, just shake it it.
Um. I remember going to Aberdeen, you guys were selling actual bags
of props. Do you still dothat? Oh yeah, oh yeah,
yeah, those have those, Imean props. Props are the things you
(22:52):
throw props. You'd be amazed howmuch as a regional thing. There's different
places that do it differently around thecountry, and then we all argue about
it when we go to conventions.Um. But uh, in the case
of us, you know, wedo things like the newspaper for for Janet,
you know, toilet paper when doctorScott shows up, um, which
that's different depending on where you aretoo. When the only Texas, No,
(23:15):
it's also different in Europe, Texas, Europe, Texas. What's the
difference at it confuses everybody else.We have glow stick for there's a light
because open flames in a theater justnot a good idea anymore. A newspaper,
Um, noisemaker, we have aparty, popper, playing cards,
(23:37):
stuff like that. You know it'schanged over the years. I think,
yeah, it definitely has changed.I mean, certainly since I first saw
Rocky or it's it's I don't wantto even say how long ago that was,
um, but it's definitely changed alot. Well, it has to.
It's adapted. You know. Theone thing that drives me, the
one thing that drives me to drinkmore than any thing, is when people
(24:00):
come to the show and tell meit's not the same anymore, and I
go find me one fucking thing anywherethat is. You know what else isn't
the same anymore? The lifespan ofa refrigerator. Nothing is the same anymore.
Man, You adapt or die.You move with the line, and
that's just the way it is.And if you're not okay with that,
(24:22):
I don't know. Fuck off,I don't know. Man. You know
what's not the same for me isstaying up to midnight to go to a
Rocky horsh and good news. Nowwe're at ten o'clock. I'm just gonna
say that, lucky for you cansee funny, you can see if the
banner scrolling at the bottom. RockyHard in New Jersey is the website you

into any there's topics, I'm justgonna take a really quick, um commercial

stuff. Um My mom My momthe lips um. So anyway, so
(29:06):
what's the I know we talked alittle bit in the in the pre interview
about some things. Um, andwe talked a little bit about the weirdest
thing you've ever done for Rocky Horror. We talked about maybe the weirdest place
you've ever done, well, theweirdest Yeah, I think me and you
have the same one because I wasjust were you. Yeah, we performed.
(29:27):
We performed in the parking lot ofStaten Island's long largest porn store.
Uh. And it smelled like StatenIsland the entire time. It was the
summer. It was on concrete ina parking lot. Uh. And uh.
(29:48):
The owner got mad at me becauseI was making reference to the people
who were using the booths upstairs, and I go, there, they know
what they're doing. They came outto Staten Island to do this where I'm
not insulting anybody. They knew whatthey were doing and they paid money for
it. So, but that wasvery interesting. We got a discount to
(30:15):
buy stuff in the store. Ididn't discount. She gave like the smallest
discount. I'm like, get thef out of here. This is a
free gig, lady. Well that'sthe thing too. I think that people
don't realize that you guys, youknow this this is a volunteer kind of
thing, right, Yeah, it'sa nice it's an actual and it's an
(30:37):
actual nonprofit organization, so you know, it has it has bills, it
has expenses, it's run it's acompany. It's run like a like a
business. So yeah, you knowit's not just a bunch of gay kids
as something like to think. Okay, there's a lot of gay kids,
but you know they also they alsohave a knack for business. Yeah,
(30:59):
and it's not like just a bunchof kids running into a movie theater taking
out the night like. There's alot very organized. It's very organized.
I mean it still is a bunchof kids running into a movie theater taking
it over. But Ryan has todo the organizer. But it was a
planned engagement. There was agreement signedand everyone is a party to its that
(31:21):
have to be opened, boxes, things that we plugged in, waivers to
be sign tickets to be sold, you know, stuff like that. And
how much do you charge for tickets? Currently the tickets are ten dollars at
that's amazing, which isn't too bad. Yeah, we have these days,
(31:41):
we have we have strived. Sowe've made it a point, by the
way to keep Rocky cheap because Rockyit obviously used to be cheaper, and
I know in some parts of thecountry it's still cheaper. Are some parts
of the country it's ludicrously expensive. But we have strived to make it as
cheap as possible. Ye for anumber of reasons. One, we don't
(32:04):
want to gate keep this experience. We don't want to be this kind of
thing that is like going to uh, you know, Liberty Science Center where
it costs a lot more than youthink it should. You're like, oh,
it's learning, it's science. No, it's seventy dollars, you know,
you know, we want we don'twant to we want it's a lot.
It's it's it's enough. We don'twant to experience to be expensive.
It's an older movie, it's nota first run movie. And also I
(32:25):
won't get too much into it.But on the business side, it's it's
not a unprofitable movie for for atheater because of a whole lot of other
things that don't matter. So it'sit's worth it, so selling it,
take it for ten dollars. It'snot harmful to a business. Uh.
And it's it's very appealing to people, so we try very hard. So
when we did, um, evenwe moved to Red Bank, I'm one
(32:49):
thing I made very sure is thatwe kept the price at that number.
And then thankfully, when we weretaken over by the Basie, they were
graciould us gracious enough to keep thatgoing and they didn't mess with that,
and we were very happy to dothat and happen to have that relationship.
So very cool. Um my sistersalready planning a trip. So you guys,
who would do it? Do it? It's my best friend, ten
(33:12):
Bucks or anything in Jersey is amazingthat you're not wrong. You're not wrong,
that is true. It's like myStarbucks order might be, ten Bucks
might be. So what what keepsyou, what keeps you inspired? What
gets you going back every every week? I think for me, it's like
the sense of family that we haveon our cast that really like keeps you
(33:36):
going so like even on the weeksthat are like super stressful, like I'm
a teacher. I've been teaching ina pandemic, like it's been crazy,
but like even now, it's justlike all of my best friends are part
of the show or have been partof the show. Like I'm still best
friends with people that used to beon the show that aren't anymore, but
like they'll still come and support us. So that's definitely something that keeps me
(33:57):
going. It's just the relationships withpeople. I mean, like obvious,
like relationships with people is a bigpart of my Rocky horror Um experience.
And also because we are the rotatingcastlest it's like it's not I'm Columbia every
single week. It's like I couldbe literally I've played every single role at
this point, I could be literallyany role or any combination of the roles
(34:17):
depending on the night. So itkeeps it spicy for me. Cool.
I think it's just the it's thestability, you know, I like,
you know now it's every every otherweek or the first and the is it
the something you know or something that'swhat it is. Yeah, it's I
(34:38):
know I have to be there atthis time and I'm gonna have a good
time. But it's also it's justit's just a lot of fun. You
know. Well, you're part ofthe Dynasty of Rocky Horror, so you
have you have to say that. There's there's somebody off camera right now threatening
him to say that the Prince ofRocky Horror. It's just Ryan right over
(34:59):
there on the I'm the mayor ofRocky Horror, the Duke of Rocky Horror,
the Duke. So yeah, itwas it was it weird to switch.
You know when when you do somethingevery week and it's like your routine
and everything, and now you're doingit every other week. Is it like,
do you miss doing it every week? Do you think you'll go back
doing it? What was that?I don't don't, right, it's weird.
(35:22):
It was weird. It was weirdnot doing it for months at a
time because we had some shows popup in the summer and then we had
shows in October to be drive insand stuff. Um, you know,
I don't think it needs to beweekly anymore because here's one of the pitfalls
of being weekly. When people knowyou're every Friday night for twenty years,
(35:43):
people always go, oh, Ican go any time yep, And psychologically,
when you do that, you justdon't go. So when we so
now having a more strict schedule,it makes it more of an event.
It gives us the ability to putmore into shows because Okay, we're gonna
bank on this, so we canput all of our energy into this.
Uh. It makes planning a loteasier as opposed to having to stretched things
(36:05):
out across a month. Uh.You know, we're we're again, we're
still getting over COVID stuff. Butwe have plans to put a lot more
energy and resources not even energy isa bad word, more resources into each
show because we have the ability toWe have more time too. Yeah so
so yeah, so I think thisis going to be fine for that.
And plus we have other we doother engagements all year. We have other
(36:29):
venues we work with. We workwith Rutgers Cinemas on Rutgers campus in uh
In, the Livingstone Campus in Piscataway. We've done shows with the Brook Theater
in uh in Um that's not Bridgeand Bound Brook. We we do the
roof of the Asbury Hotel every summer. We have a lot of rank with
other places. So we're not We'restill doing a lot more rocky, harder
(36:51):
than other people. And we wereand we're happy we've we got back before
a lot of other people. Uh. And we were you know, privilege
to do that because we also weput a lot of precautions we in place.
We took things seriously. We're we'vebeen playing things very safe and it
has not bitten us in the assso far, and it's better not at
this point. So I think thingswill be fine for now. We're always
gonna be doing Rocky Horror. We'realways gonna be doing something, you know,
(37:15):
so because we're already, because we'realready trying to plan things for the
summer, We're already got things inthe pipeline. Halloween, there's already some
things in the pipeline. It's justall stuff that's still being worked out.
So one of the things that Istruggle with with doing my ghost tours is
I feel like I miss I likekind of missed out a little bit on
Halloween because I'm doing tours. Youknow, I'm I'm kind of working,
(37:37):
even though I love doing my ghosttours. Do you guys ever feel like
that, like I'm missing out onHalloween? I mean, Rocky Horror is
my Halloween and it has been forthe past, you know, eleven twelve
years of my life, so Ican't miss out on it. If this
is what I do, you knowwhat, it's a good point. Well,
but you know, being in beingin relationships, if you've ever been
(37:59):
in a real relationship with someone whodoesn't do Rocky horror you have you know,
you, uh, you are kindof robbing somebody of their Halloween,
and uh that is something I hopeto do less of as I get older.
But yeah, but I with Steveyour Rocky hard has been my Halloween
for so goddamn long, you know, throughout my teenage years, so I
(38:20):
always but I understand other people doother things and I totally get that,
which is why I look at Halloweenas a month long event. You know,
Uh, it really is, especiallyRocky Horror. You know, anytime
you're doing Rocky are in October,it's it's Halloween. That's the way it
is. You know, It's tryto keep it always Halloween here in this
house. But there's definitely a differentvibe during the month of October. Absolutely
(38:42):
sure, absolutely, Do you guyshave any thought, um, any thoughts
on your weirdest things that because wedidn't get down to you guys down there
about anything trying to think of mymy weirdest one. So definitely, I
would say the weirdest place that I'vedone Rocky Horror was in a cemetery in
Jersey City. I know, wetalked about it a little bit yep,
(39:05):
I always forget the name of it. That was definitely Asthmas weird. It
was cool. I mean, itwas very vibe. Um. I don't
know if I would necessarily want todo it again, but it was cool.
Another weird one for me, whichis weird just because of it was
a lot grander than I expected, was when I performed in Germany, um,
because it was like, yeah,so like we perform in front of
(39:29):
like you know, like between likeyou know, like up to like two
hundred people, like that's normal.I went there and it was like two
thousand people, and I was likeand I was like, threw up?
They do? Did I warn youat all? Did you know it's gonna
be that? Man? A lotof people had done it because it's like
something that's like hosted like within theRocky community, like every couple of like
(39:50):
I don't know if it's like everyyear every two years. So like a
bunch of people before me had gone, and it's like this international like we
had performers from like nine different countrieslike represented. It was super cool and
like I guess I should have justassumed it was going to be this big
thing, but like in my head, I was like I do Rocky hard
in a little movie theater and thenwe go and it's this outdoor amphitheater with
this like giant blow up stage andthere's like three people playing each bar.
(40:15):
It was like a huge wild timeand it was like super fun, but
like I was just like this isa lot all at once. It was
like century overload at first, butthen it was probably one of my favorite
experiences in rappy giant blow up stagesounds like it'd be fun to perform on.
Yeah, Sam, it was ascreat Oh can we get trampolines in
(40:35):
the theater. No, the're gonnabe the horror Come on, sirk the
horror. Um. Yeah, theporn store is weird, you know.
Uh. There have been some divebars that we've done. The god we
Brighton Bar. We used to.We did Brighton Bar a few times.
Rest rest in Pepperoni, pouring outof the home. Here's my mom,
(41:00):
long time coming. The wine barsright now. The wine bar is amazing
though it's just like me drinking Merlotas Rocky we do. We do,
we do a wine bar occasionally. We were doing a wine bar in Highland
(41:20):
Park a few times. That wasn'tthat wasn't bad. So, yeah,
we've done a lot of we usedto do We used to caught. We
used to do a lot of collegeshows. And you never knew what you're
gonna get with the college show becauseyou were always booked by a club.
And sometimes the club would be ableto get like an auditorium. Sometimes club
would be able to get like alarge room classroom. But one time it
(41:42):
was like a small ass multi purposeroom and it was just very intimate.
You know, we're we were sweatingon some Vio majors and stuff. It
was just it was a small Itwas like in UM Stockton College. We
drove all the way down to Stocktona couple of times and it was like
they're like, here's your space, and I'm like to check the classroom.
(42:05):
I'm like, all right, wellwe'll make it work. Natalie here says,
I just like the fact that RockyHorrors found its way into these future
generations. I agree, it's definitelya nice bonding experience a multi generation.
You know what it is, wepass it down like trauma, So you
know, if it's a generational trauma, we just keep passing down. It's
really it's really what it is soliterally, you know, the way your
(42:28):
parents fucked you up. We're keepingit going down house Rocky horror excellent.
Yeah, that would be a goodtime. You can't wear you can't wear
frank heels in there that I don'tknow. I well, that was that
was fun. That that would beinteresting. So, um real, just
(42:53):
let everybody know where you guys arelocated, please. So we are located
at the Basic Center Cinemas and RedBank on thirty six White Street is formerly
bow Tie Cinemas. Um so uh. This happened around the pandemic. The
Basy homes account Basie Theater had purchasedour theater and we're still there. It's
(43:15):
every first, third and Friday atten pm. Um, you know,
barring special events. When October comes, I'm sure we'll do some special special
things at different times, different daysbecause it's Halloween. Well, you know,
we'll get there when we get there. Thankfully, they've been very accommodated
with pretty much letting us have anyschedule we want right now and it's going
good. We hope to keep itthat way, you know, including hopefully
(43:37):
expanding to other opportunities in the future. But that is right. But you
know, We've reform all over thestate, so check us out on our
website. We post events as theycome up. Um, there's always something.
We expect a couple of special showsthis summer. In Halloween. It's
Halloween. You'll you'll you'll see.Well, that's that's the I mean,
(43:58):
it really does. If you goto Rocky Horror in like January, it
does continue that vibe of Halloween forme, at least. Well, we
knew we were doing well before COVID. We were doing Halloween in June.
That was a theme that we didevery June. So it just gave people
an excuse to work costumes again andhave a costume contest and stuff. And
I would do any excuse extra Halloweenfit. But you know, nobody ever
(44:19):
really stopped anybody from coming to RockyHorror dressed as a pirate or anything.
That's pretty much how I started RockyHard. It's just other people, other
grown men, dressed as pirates, and I'm like, all right, I
don't get it, but cool,Sorry about that, by the way,
to the show a few times. That's that's one of the things about Rocky
Horrors that we could see someone showup in a giant Gremlin's costume and it's
(44:39):
like that's normal. You're like, hey, ja, I hired that guy,
you know what I mean? Justlike friend, anyone can show up
in whatever costume they want any dayof the year and it's the normal because
everyone like as long as there isyou know, doing doing human decency and
(44:59):
not the doing anything improper, thenabsolutely we do not care. I feel
like that also. I feel likethat's also part of like why we like
why Rocky Horrors survived so long too, because it's like not even just dressing
in costume, but being able tolike dress as your true self is like
so accepted. Like I remember whenI started going, like there are people
be dropped off by their parents inone outfit, go into the bathroom and
(45:22):
change and like come out in anotheroutfit because like it's like they're true,
like you know, however they wereidentifying whether they couldn't at home, Like
it's just a safe space for thingslike that. So I think that's why
we're still around too. I thinkthat's so important. Trying to get my
(45:44):
cats attention. The real the realstar has arrived, so it's trying to
get it. Come over here, come over here. Who's over here for
a second. I don't know realthe real star. They always steal the
show of a dog at my feetwho's trying to steal the show too.
Yeah, I've been teaching via zoomfor a year. Stormy has been the
star of my lessons. Yeah,it's an at least point here. It's
(46:07):
a cult classic cult cult classic participatepart Hello, participation. Well, you
know, it'd be nothing without theparticipation. It'd be nothing without the participation.
Watching this show. Watching this movieat home is just fucking it's weird.
I've had people literally say to me, I'll just watch it at home.
(46:29):
Okay, who are you also aserial killer? Because this is this
social activity. It's like, youare you you have a bagful of catheads.
It's like, what are the weirdthing you do in psycho? Tell
me, well, here we throwrice in my living room. Well,
you're just gross, You're fucking gross. How How many lightsabers do I have?
(46:52):
I have one, two, three, four or five? Question?
How many five lightsabers? If wehave time, I'll tell you exactly which
ones they are? But um,but yeah, so yeah, the experience
it's we don't call so we don'tjust see we're assholes. We don't just
call it Rocky Horror. We callit the full Rocky Horror experience, and
the experience. The experience starts whenyou get there and it ends when you
(47:16):
leave. We are trying to makeevery bit of an experience, and especially
in watching how our show has grownin production value alone, it's the experience.
Every bit of it is a partof the show. It stops you
leave, you know, but it'sthe whole thing. You know, you're
just watching a show at home,Okay, what then wait for the commercials
(47:37):
and wait for bedroom seemed to becut out and lab scene shorten because it's
on TV. It's like, youknow, it's theater, you heathens.
That's a different conversation. You're notwrong, You're not wrong, right.
I love how how enthusiastic you guysare about it, too, because I
(47:58):
think it's something that you I mean, you obviously have to be super enthusiastic
to get dressed up and do allthis stuff every well every two weeks.
Now. Um, it's just it'sit's amazing, it's great. I was
gonna say the name of my autobiographyis Rocky horr Ruined my life. So
but in a good way. Iguess, well, I'm sure. I
(48:21):
definitely joke. I joke. Doyou guys have um any special themes or
anything coming up? We might bedoing our first ever Pride Night coming up.
We have to like figure out likethe logistics of it, but that
would be our first thing where likeeverything, she's gonna be gayer. If
you can imagine what that would looklike looking at the calendar, I could,
(48:43):
I could, I could bet onwhat day I'd like it to be.
I'd like it to be June eighteenth. We'll see if that actually happens,
but I'd very much like that justlooking at the calendar. Yeah,
let's invite the rest of the caston. You can get the don't I
don't have the sanity that. Idon't have the sanity for that. Yeah.
So yeah, because we're trying toease back into things because right now
(49:06):
we still have we still have westill have audience caps on our show.
So yeah, you're we are onlywe are only allowed to have about fifty
people for the time being. Um, that will change, it will change,
but right now it's just and it'sfine. It's it's it's safe.
So it's truly all that matters rightnow. It's it's you know, you
(49:27):
have there's no chance of anybody youknow, sneezing on you or anything.
And the we we have, wehave toned down some things. We've had
lunch, we have a choice justfor safety. You know. Unfortunately,
right now we're not we we're big. We're big on the inclusivity of the
show. So we like involving theaudience as much as possible. And one
of the real heartbreaking things is thatwe can't right now. So we can't
(49:50):
pull people up on stage. Ican't do things with the virgins. We
just can't risk it right now forpublic health. Uh So we'll make up
for it when we when it comesback. The first the first, the
first group of virgins that come backto the show, they got waivers.
That's it. We need to getthose four pound gummy bears and throw those.
(50:10):
If you've never been to Rocky Horror, now's the time to go so
that you're no longer a virgin forthe other crazy again. Yeah, because
but we we we we love includingpeople. You know, we use people
as props. Here, hold thissign here, you're gonna be the pummel
horse today. You know, you'regonna be this lever and people love it.
We love including people where we can, but right now we just can't.
(50:31):
We just can't can't do that.Remember the time that we didn't have
many chairs and we were like, hey, who wants to be a chair,
and like ten people came running ontothe stage. We had we had
no chairs one Halloween show because wehad blocked off some seats for lighting equipment,
(50:52):
and then we had no one. There was no one that needed handicap
accessibility, so we filled the handicapsection with folding chairs. And then we
had no chairs for dinner scenes,so we said we need some chairs and
like eight people ran up and we'rejust chairs for having a minute. Uh
it's all kind of bad, butuh yeah, I loved it. They
(51:13):
volunteered exactly. It goes back tothe roots of Rocky Horror. Like you
know, the shadow casting started whenpeople, well audience members would just get
up and start performing in their regularclothes. They start The lack of chairs
all started. It did it didn't? It started pretty much the way Steve
(51:36):
said it did, so yeah, pretty much. But you know, no,
go ahead, good, no,no, it just uh you know,
but once when when COVID finally, you know, when the Global Bastard
goes away for good, you know, there's definitely some innovations. We're going
to be making some things that arejust going to change the game as soon
as we can. It's just we'rewe're still kind of unfortunately a little bit.
(51:58):
Our hands are tied a little bitunfortunate only still, and that's that's
fine, better safe than better safethan not that it really because this is
already this is already fucked up enoughfor a lot of people, so we
can't really keep that going. Sowe're gonna be safe until we're told we
can be less safe. So yeah, just happening. Audience impact your performance.
(52:19):
I like, I know, forme doing my ghost tours, I
could only do like usually I'd havelike groups of like twenty or thirty,
and this season I can only dolike ten. And it was like,
it was great. It was sograteful that I could do it. But
it's not the same energy. Theonly thing that that's kind of a bummer
about it is everyone's spaced out.And the one thing we strived for was
(52:43):
for everyone to be close together, because it made it more intimate and you
could really everyone not only could youfeed off the audience's energy, the energy
can feed off each other's energy andwhen everyone's spaced out, I just I've
never personally liked performing that way becauseit's like who where do I direct my
attention to you? To you,to you know, to you? So
that I don't know, I kindof like it. Well, I was
(53:07):
gonna say, however, like westrive to, like our standard is we
perform the same show every show,so whether there's one person in the audience
or a thousand, if there's one, that one person is going to get
the same experience. Yeah, likeyeah, and I kind of like so
the way that the theater does itnow is like you buy the actual seats,
(53:30):
so like you buy a seat likeGee's two and three, and like
now that people have the option tosit towards the back, because normally,
like Ryan said, we kind oflike heard everybody closer to the front.
I feel like as a as performers, it's kind of also pushed us to
like be even bigger and be evenlouder, and be even gayer because it's
like we got to get the personthat's like all the way back there.
(53:51):
So like it kind of pushed youto be bigger. You need to be
bigger and gayer. I always striveto be bigger and gayer, right,
I didn't think that was possible.Speak surprise, um, and so like
it's kind of also pushed us asperformers to you know, kind of go
out of our comfort zones a littlebit. Oh okay, sorry, all
right, hold on, we havea special guest. Oh there he is.
(54:12):
There, he is a special guest. There's his murder Mittens with his
freaking ninety seven. Yeah, he'sgot a lot of thumbs. Oh my
goodness, he's like, I'm done, I'm out. Yeah, he doesn't
he doesn't like being on camera toomuch. Um. So we are almost
up time, at the end ofour time. So I just want to
remind everybody again to check out RockyHarror, New Jersey at Rocky Hart and
(54:36):
Jay dot com. Um, andyou guys are also on Facebook. Friday
Night specials cast on Facebook. Um. But you can find all social media
for these guys on Rocky Horror andJay dot Com. So one stop shop
for everything yeah fins, Rocky Horroron most things, Twitter, Instagram,
tikop chat, TikTok now, tiktokto. I don't know how TikTok works,
(54:58):
but we do not have a LinkedIn, though somebody did try to convince me
to get one, and I we'renot doing it. We're also on good
Reads. Just kidding, I'm justgonna start naming random websites. Well,
Steve always jokes around porn hubs,so you know, maybe we're on only
fans. You might think you mightnot even know it. Now you're right,
we might be god damnit possible again. Yeah, it's one. It's
(55:25):
somebody I know dressed up is madeto that Steve, Steve with a terrible
beard. So we only got twominutes left, guys, any last words.
Um, you know, we hopeyou know. Tickets are or are

come. Otherwise, tickets for Junewill likely be on sale, probably by
the weekend. By the end ofthe weekend, we are trying to do
our best to get a whole monthsworth the tickets on sale as far as
advanced as possible because it's limited.People are liking to pick their date in
(56:08):
advance. Um, and we likethat too, So tickets for June will
likely be on sale by the endof the weekend, but right now May
twenty first on sale. Yeah,be there by tickets on site. Are
you encouraging pre We are encouraging allonline right now. And the one the
(56:30):
link we have, if I'm notmistaken, has no search charges. Uh
fandango charges the crap at you whenyou buy it directly through the basi site.
There are no search charges, Ibelieve. Um, we highly recommend
it. If we just can't guaranteeseats to the door right now unfortunately,
so one day we will be ableto, but that is not today.
(56:50):
So Natalie's requested to sing us thetime warp guys, but I'm not so
sure we have permission to do that. So we never want to come see
here, we do not have Wedo not have the presition to do that.
This podcast will be erased by noneof us. None of us know
the words. We just opened ourmouths, so we really don't have to
know the word. Yeah, that'strue. See the secret is the secret
(57:15):
is I've been pretending these twenty years. I'm a fraud, Isn't isn't Tim
Allen in this movie? Remember thatjoke where somebody tried to what the hell
was it? Somebody tried to Iwas doing trivia at the show one time
(57:35):
before the show at the audiences killedtime, and somebody was emphatic that Tim
Allen was was Frank him Allen ofthe Santa Claus. Yeah, then,
but I'm also but I'm but almlsoI'm also I collect I collect Rocky horror.
Member Abelia have a pretty crazy Rockyhorror page of degenerate Rocky Horror collector
on Instagram and Facebook. By theway, um, I collect a lot
(57:59):
of weird Rocky ship But one timeon eBay there was someone selling a Tim
Curry photo. But it was actuallyjust as signed him Allen of Kim Allen
dressed as buzz Lightyear. Fucking eBay. eBay is great. It was It
was reasonable. Yeah, it wasreasonable. Thanks a lot, Mom,
(58:19):
should I should have bought it?Just real quick, I have a I
