DIRTcar Racing Modified Mafia Tour Preliminary Heats Races at Winchester Speedway, Virginia

This previous weekend was a four thousand dollars event. It
was an unsanctioned at dirt car modified show. But Ray
Cable picked up his second victory of the season at
Winchester Speedway. And obviously, with that said, why trying so
hard to break through in victory lane for this track

this year? He has right now? Momentum wise, I would
say put the ninety nine and the ninety on your
billfold to try to win here tonight. But obviously, as
we mentioned in hot lapse, there is an amazing group
of drivers on the entry list here to race as well.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Oh no doubt you got former winners this year. Mitch
Thomas of course has won here this year. Of course
Justin Collins a former track champion. Got Glenn Elliott also
a winner here, Michael wilt Tabella, you never could count
him out, Mike Franklin, former track champion. As we mentioned,

Joey Polvoy recently won a modified race at the Potomac Speedway.
In of course, Cody Williams is won here this season
and TJ. De Haven, a former track champion here at Winchester.
Cody Oliver's won here before along with Frank Cable, so
we got a lot of cars going to be very
tough in that modified. Again the track record Todd Ninheiser

at fifteen point two four to seven. That is the
one lap track record here at Winchester. As looks like
great job by our track maintenance. True getting. So as
we get them off, we're gonna be ready to go
for qualifying.

All right, We're about ready to send him out. So
ladies and gentlemen qualify. It is about to get underway

Qualifying underway. M hm, So, ladies and gentlemen, it is
time for qualifying. Here comes Mitch Thomas to ninety seven,

ready to bring him out. The first three including Typhoon
tight in order from Morrisville, North Carolina, and Mike Franklin
from right here at Winchester. Three amazing hot shoes ready
to go here in qualifying, and Mitch Thomas will set
the bar. Mitch Thomas said that number ninety seven entry,

ladies and gentlemen, the driver from Oakland, Maryland, and the
Elite chassis with a Corey Race Engine will be the
man to set the bar fifteen eight twenty five to
a fifteen eight eight nine.

Track champion Chris Arnold, winner last two times and Michael

the Motoka Flash Chris Arnold, the inaugural series champion. He
won the North end the South championship and right now

fight hotshoe, he's ready to roll behind him they come

South Carolina. That is Stephen Padola and the Padola excavated entry.
And then you got the number eleven right there of
Robert Kramer. Drivers coming down to the line. They'll take

the checkered flag. We'll see where they end up. And
Chris Arnold highest man in that last group was Stephen Padola.
Remember the top six go to the at Well exterior

That is Cole Hilton, the pride out of Concord in
the Charlotte area of North Carolina. And Cole Hilton has
went up in the air and you see the outcome
of how badly damaged the ninety nine is. Cole Hilton
is beside himself and frustrated.

Everyone please stay off the track until we get the
ambulance or track officials. Everyone else please stay off the track.

Cole Hilton is I mean over the top roof of
his car. And we are also understanding that we have uh, well,
Cole Hilton getting out of the car. We have another
person that we're checking out over there, and you can
see how frustrated, obviously Cole Hilton is. It looked like

he yeah, look at Cole Hilton. If you can, if
our turn one camera man can zoom in, obviously we
can say he's okay, but you can just see the
the heartbreak, just pure frustration. And then we have somebody

else that we're trying to get checked out over there
on the other side of the car. Cole Hilton just
looking at the beaten, battered, bruised number ninety nine as
we are under the red flag here and qualifying his

car up in the air, it got airborne, tumbled a
couple of times. He tumbled a couple of times, and
then now he just walks around and Jimmy, you can
see him holding the Hans device. We gotta paint a
picture for our radio audience, but for those watching you

can see him holding the Hans device. You can just
see how dejected he is. Most importantly he does climbing
out of the car. We have somebody else that will
checking out as well on the passenger side of the car.
And right now we're just working on trying to clear
the accident up. But that's heartbreak for Cole Hilton, that is.

But the main thing is Cole is okay. He's out
of the car. Fans, he is okay. And again we

Cole Hilton obviously got his first career win in the
dirt car modified Mafia to Wear back in May at
County Line Raceway.

It has been a up and down roller coaster ride
over the years for the driver from the Concord Charlotte area.
Finally got again that win at Elm City. Felt that
things were on the curve turning things around for the
driver and then problems where sometimes he would have engine

issues many many years ago, back and back and forth
with engine problems. And now you see him looking over
his number ninety nine machine and we're working on clearing
things up. We have a cleanup going on with what's
going on in turn number two. For those that are

with the promoter and owner of not only the Winchester
Speedway and Gunner's Honey this afternoon, mister Greg Gunner. As

Obviously to give you an update of what's going on
over there in turn number one and two about got
things cleared up, obviously if you're looking on the hook
the ninety nine of Cole Hilton's car now getting ready
to have the dreadful toe vacation back to the overflow
and survey the damage. You know, I was kind of

optimistic talking with Don Mercer, our race director, and I said.

How bad can it? How bad is it? Is? He done?

Speaker 1 (16:37):
Could it get fixed now? Sometimes the eye can confuse us.
Sometimes we think cars could be completely destroyed. They'll get
in there, they'll tinker, they're beaten, batter and bang, get
out the sledgehammers, the bare bond tape for the next thing.
You know, you'll see these guys roll out. However, of
catching the tail end of that flip and seeing the
damage with the halo bars and more of the suspension,

the toe in, then the shocks, I don't think we'll
see the ninety nine for the rest of the night.

It looks like a tough break for Cole Hilton, and
but the main thing is gonna Cole is okay, and
certainly safety has come a long way since we first started,
and I'll tell you haven't. That's why we have rules
here at the Winchester Speedway that they build safe race cars.

We've got ARC Racing, Rock and Chassis, other chassis as
well do a great job getting these chassis cars. As
we're going to resume qualifying, we got Joey Polvoy won
a Potomac last week and On Lacy in twenty eight.

They're trying to work that track back in and just
try to flatten out the surface, if you will. And
once we can get that done on the clay here
in corners one and two, we'll get right back into qualifying.

That's why I heard recently they had the West Virginia

heard they're going back to the three eighths mile now.
They've had different owners from switching it from the original
five ages, then then other owner switched to three aids,

they're going back to the three ages mile oval. So
hopefully the new owner will be doing a little better.

And by the way, Mike Curley not only bought West
Virginia but or Speedway, he turned around and got Elkins
Raceway too.

and me and Greg talked about it this afternoon. Was
all these tracks and promoters and somehow we got to
find a way to come together work with one another.
But the Modified Mafia Tour obviously being at those places
hopefully in the future coming back. I can tell you
it's a done deal. Four times in twenty twenty six.

The Modified Mafia Tour will be back here in twenty
twenty six, which will be our fourth season. And I
will tell you, I think the first time we were here
we had one race? Was it one race the art
first year, the second year we had we had two.
Mike Franklin was he inaugural winner of that. I believe

it was on a Memorial Day weekend. And then of
course we had two race dates last year. We've had
four this year. We're gonna have four next year. And
obviously thank you to great Gunner and everybody here at
the Winchester Speedway. Jimmy, we love coming to this place

Race and action as the Lee Stultz Memorial coming up
for the Super Late Models in two weeks, as we
honor the winning US car owner in Winchester Speedway history,
the Man one titles and the old Sportsman class and
the thirty by ninety modifieds and the Modified class, and

they had drivers like Bill Nalley and Hall of Famer
also Charlie Bieler and a Sportsman class sprint cars, Ray
Doval and of course the Virginia legend himself, the all
time winner in the Super Late Models, Buddy Armor, hall
of Famer himself, as he and Lee Stults said, some

many successful As we get to run that event in
two weeks here at the Winchester Speedway, as we honor
the arch Hall of Fame Coliner Lee Stoltz, the famous
S three that was there for many years and kind
of interesting how that number came about when the speedway
first opened, when the racers were deciding on numbers. If

you had a single digit number, you had to put
the first letter of your last name in front of
the number or next to it.

So Lee decided to put S for the first and
he got the.

Number three, so they put the S three and that
has been probably the most famous number in Winchester Speedway
history and the legends have driven from.

breaking news. We will not be at Tyler County Speedway

will be going to. There's a I hate say it,
but it's a tire war. And these tire wars are
now not only hurting the weekly tracks the drivers, now
it's hurting the sanctioning bodies and the promoters and tracks
as well. Because of that reason, we will not be
running at Tyler County Speedway on Labor Day weekend, so

we will be at County Line Raceway and then we
will be at Potomac Speedway.

But I have to say, I think the powers that
be for putting their foot down standing behind who's your
racing tire before the other ar guys come in and
and you know, we see a tire war. I see
it in dirt, I see it in pavement, you see
it in karting. It's it's the shame that it's just

the that that this is literally where we are now
in our sport. But because of it, now we're losing
dates or we're having to change and go to different
places to appease everybody.

Yeah, I know, especially you got uh who's your tire
war with American Racer?

I think they had a lot during the uh super
Late Model speed weeks, they had that tire war between

So now it's kind of like we're trying to figure

and HBM Repro Racing Tire, they're a part of w

I mean, and I don't want to get off subject
because it's a dirt car modified series events, but you know,
Sports Action TV covers the WKA, the nationals of Regionals, Daytona,

but me and Greg were actually talking with Me and

Greg Gunner were actually talking about to deal with the tires.

So yeah, we want to mention the track. The injured
track official that was on track is okay. Our track

want to add anything more. You don't want to take
away what we don't know right. Sometimes people to make

to interviews with obviously Brandon and Great Gunner because we

was the right information. Sometimes people put hashtag fake news
out there. We didn't want to do that, so we

Sounds like Glenn Elliott, Glenn Burnie, Maryland's Glenn Elliott. He
won his first race in the Modified Manfia Tour at
Natural Bridge Speedway up in the mountains of Rowan Oak, Virginia,
back in August of last year. And he's a late
model Modified Star. And now we hear the driver there
of the same. All right, So we're gonna go back

to qualifying. We're understanding the thirty five had already a
lap completed, Ryan Dolan, so he only gets one lap.
Everybody else that thinks is gonna get a start over
here and right now it's not changing anybody in the

August fifteenth, as we honor the winningest corner in Winchester
Speedway history, the late Lee Stults Arch Hall of Famer
one and modified one in Sportsman he won super Late
Models with legendary drivers from all Hall of famers like

Bill Nalley and Charlie Beeler, Ray Doval and of course
the Virginia legend all time winner here in the Late Models,
Buddy Armol here. As we'll be running that race as
we David Stultz and his family will be having this
race once again.

Jimmy, you mentioned you mentioned David Stoltz, and I remember
as a kid, even before I became a thirty year broadcaster,
going to Fayetteville or Lakeview, Carolina Speedway, and remember David
Stoltz in the cars racing there at the dirt tracks
and they have a Tampa day. So, man, it's awesome
that there was that lineage and that pain homage to

such an amazing person in the area of the sport.

Speaker 2 (01:39:26):
Yeah, he certainly was Lee Stoltz. I only got the
man just a few times, but it was a gentleman
and he always knew. I sked David. I said, how
did he know how to get his favorite drivers to
drive his car? And and I think Buddy Armelds said
it best. I said, what made Lee so good? And

(01:39:47):
he said, this was Buddy Armel's quote. He just got
along with people, and that's something you rarely see. And
mister Stoltz, I actually have. My late neighbor used to
serve our country a gentleman.

Tommy Smoot used to live next door to me. My
hometown Romney, West Virginia now Jersey Mountain Road. His mom
and dad were the postmasters of our general store out
there for a post office. And Tommy used to work
for Lee Staltz, and there was a story he told me.
He said, when Lee didn't have any race regular cars

to work on, Lee would have them working on the
S three.

I asked, I asked if he ever gave him a raise.
He said he didn't know for sure, but I wasn't served.
But I'll tell you he but.

Speaker 2 (01:40:42):
That man was one of the best I ever seen
as mechanic, corner whatever. Mister Lee Saltz, he was a
legend at this track and he was one of the
best corners, winning corners for many years. And the talent
he had was you could be a Hall of Famer.
Some other drivers driven for him, the late Rodney Franklin.

(01:41:05):
A lot of people didn't know he married Lee's daughter.
Darlene was Thee's daughter, and he also had other drivers.
I think the late Red Nonager drove his car one time.
Sam Nally also drove Johnny haberback one time, drove when
I think when Buddy Armor was injured. And he had

(01:41:28):
so many people driving for him, but he was one
of the best corners and he just figured something out.
He knew who he wanted in his cars and that
somehow it just worked. He just had everything and he
was one of the best. Coming up in two weeks,
we're gonna find out who's going to be the winner.

Will win the super Late Model Lee Stultz Memorial coming
up at Winchester. It should be fun. While they're preparing
to the track there, we'll have our track officials there.
You're going to run the track in. Looks like they're
getting ready. We have a lot of racing that's coming

But luckily, as soon as we got up ninety five

and it was just absolutely beautiful love coming to this
place and Winchester Speedway. And obviously, as we already told
you that that we're coming back here four times next
