(00:02):
Welcome to town. Everyone's unique intheir own way, right. Maybe I
should be concerned about your articles.Don't worry. I still doubt that you're
actually human. Just another day andWater's Edge, Season four, Episode eight,

(00:24):
The Box. Hello, anyone wantto talk? Or are you just

(00:53):
gonna stare at me through the twoway mirror? You know the handcuffs were
of this much? Hello, missNunius? Here some water? And how
am I supposed to drink this withmy hands? Tide? I'm sure you'll

(01:14):
figure it out. Investigator Kendy EzraInterview number one hundred in The Water's Edge
Human Investigation. It is May thirtyfirst, twenty fourteen, one twenty five
am. Subject is Avrah Louisa Nunius. Dark brown hair, green eyes,

(01:36):
medium build. Subject has been calledinto questioning on the basis of the accusation
that she is the human who hasinfiltrated Cryptid Society in order to destroy it
from the inside out. Is everythingI've said factually accurate to the best of
your knowledge? Well, you're supposedto answer. I have the right to

(01:57):
talk to an attorney before answering questions. Nah, that's hilarious. I thought
I told your partner that your Americanlaws don't matter in this room. That
seems very illegal. I suppose itwould be if anyone were to find out,
But since I don't believe you havean attorney coming anyway, they won't,
so it isn't. Now let's startanswering why should I you're already convinced

(02:20):
I'm the human you've been looking for. If you're so sure and you don't
care about giving me a fair trial, why hasn't my mind been a rased
already. If you want to hurrythe process along, that can be arranged.
But my superiors wouldn't stand for amind wipe without proper protocol being taken
first. Seems counter to the wholeWe don't care about your Miranda rights.
My goal is to protect cryptids bya race acryptids memory on the assumption that

(02:44):
they're human, and end up killingthem. That detracts from my goal.
Then let me go I'm acryptid.A mind wipe would kill me. Then
why has every conversation I've had withanyone close to you led me to believe
you're lying? I don't know you'remisinter things. I've been honing my craft
for hundreds of years. I donot misinterpret. But this case is important

(03:07):
to you. It's probably the mostimportant ever. Right. A threat to
the entirety of crypt kind is terrifying, and I'm sure the High Council has
you under a lot of pressure andit's making you see connections that aren't there.
Of course, I'm under a lotof pressure. This is the single
most dangerous threat to our kind sincethe Expulsion the what don't try to change

(03:28):
the subject. You brought it up. The expulsion was a systematic purge of
all cryptid life throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas at the
end of the fifteen hundreds. Therewas a time when cryptids and humans lived
amongst one another, and crypted animalscoexisted with other earthly life forms as well.

(03:49):
What is a crypted animal? Neverheard of a unicorn? Chubicabra?
Those are real. They were humansturned on them first, killing off species.
When a human messed with a creaturethey shouldn't and got what they deserved.
Some cryptoids tried to stop them, but even in those times we were
such a small minority. That waswhen my town was formed in fifty years

(04:12):
or so, that cryptid animals werebeing hunted to extinction. The creators of
Hugh and Maday could feel a changecoming and wanted to prepare, and thank
god they did. It only tookone or two instances of humans spinning a
cryptid self defense claim into a monstrousmurder, and the expulsion began. They
killed kryptids, they did, andthey weren't going to stop until all of

(04:33):
us were dead and gone. Luckily, Hugh and Maday was ready, and
with the ultimate sacrifice from the mostpowerful magic user I've ever seen, we
were shrouded away behind an impenetrable shield, invisible to the humans trying to kill
us, but everyone else. Mostwere killed, but some were able to

(04:54):
sneak away make homes for themselves inthe most remote locations they could find.
For hundreds of years there no cryptidsettlement that could be seen by humans.
Time passes, though, and generationscontinue, so eventually, very small communities
of cryptids showed up across the world. We're drawn to each other and to
the places where magic is strong, and by the mid eighteen hundreds there were

(05:15):
a few towns scattered across the globe. I always thought it was too much
of a risk building cryptid settlements again, and I was right. It only
took a few hundred years, andthere's a human ready to expose everything we've
worked so hard to protect. Ihad no idea. Most today don't on
account of our history being held primarilywith those living in Hyun Miday. I

(05:36):
understand why you're worried about history.Repeating another expulsion would be horrible, But
I have nothing to do with anyof this. I'm not who you're looking
for. I would never expose thesecret. If you're so concerned for Cryptid
kind answer my questions. Fine, when did you move to town September of

(05:57):
last year? What brought you here? Roger offered me the job as editor
in chief? And how could youtell it was a cryptid towne? I
just knew you faultered. Okay,I didn't know, But when I got
here, I found out that Rogerwas acrypted and he knew about me,
so it was fine. I don'tunderstand. I've lived around humans before,

(06:18):
so I'm fine. I don't careabout your motive for moving. Then what
is it? Why can't I feelanything from you? What? I can't
read you? Why can't I readyou? I can't feel a pulse or
you're breathing all the little tells thatvibrate through your aura to tell me when
you're lying and when you're telling thetruth. I can't feel anything. It's

(06:40):
like talking to a rock. Doyou have some magic block or something?
Or are humans simply too dull toeven from an aura that I can tap
into. I'm not a human, you have to be. I've met thousands
of crypted throughout my life, andI have never encountered any who haven't given
off an aura. The only explanationthat makes sense is that you're human.
Maybe your powers aren't as great asyou thought they were. Are you insulting

(07:02):
me? Well, you're like hundredsof years old, right, Sometimes you
can't do things as well after awhile. I'm not snile. I was
given immortality. Doesn't mean your giftswere. You know. I might not
be able to tell if you're lyingto me by using my powers, but
that's just how I do things theeasy way. I know you're the human

(07:24):
i'm looking for. All I haveto do is get you to admit it,
and I won't need any special abilitiesto do that. Good morning,
Margo. I was Friday training youso far? Fine? Thanks? Something

(07:47):
wrong? Look, I know it'searly, but you look troubled. Well,
Kendy brought in another subject this morning? Really this early? Yes?
And arrest? Actually? What?Who? Half nun yez, Kendy.

(08:11):
I'm right here at Jenkins. What'swith the shouting? You booked someone this
morning? Margot told you I did. She's in the interrogation room now.
I'm letting her stew a bit beforeI go in for a second round of
questions. Second round? Why wasI not informed? There was no need.
You're not involved in my investigation. You're arresting what are my citizens on

(08:33):
what sounds like baseless charges. I'mabsolutely involved. You have no idea the
amount of evidence I have on Nunez. Oh really, because just the other
day all you had were vague statementsfrom scarce citizens speaking under dress. Is
that what your idiotic high council likes? Half baked theories that I'll get innocent
people killed. Watch your mouth. We may be in your precinct, officer,

(08:56):
but you're in my investigation. Weboth know I out and if you
overstep, there are a lot ofstrings I can pull to take away that
beloved badge of yours. No,no, no, Look, you can
threaten me all you want if youmade an unlawful arrest, I won't hesitate
to bring in some higher powers ofmy own. I may not work for
some shady counsel, but I imaginesome higher courts would be interested in a
suspect being detained on no basis offact. And how exactly would you go

(09:22):
about explaining my investigation to a humancourt? You want to risk exposing cryptid
kind in order to protect one citizenof yours from being stuck in my interrogation
room for a few hours. Ithought, as much, What do you
even have against her besides secondhand informationand circumstantial evidence? Not much at the

(09:43):
moment, but I'm sure it's her? Then? Why is she still in
the interrogation room and not being preppedfor a mind wipe? Why do you
have to ask so many questions? You are not the only one who conducts
investigations for our living. You mustbe pretty unsure if you've still got or
here or your High Council's bar proofis higher than your lie detect our abilities

(10:05):
can provide. Do they doubt you? The Council trusts me completely. They
just like to deal in absolutes.I need a confession once I get her
to admit to being a human. They'll accept any consequences I enforce, and
I am confident that I can makethat happen within the next few hours.
Come on, Jenkins, you shouldbe thrilled. You'll get your office back,

(10:28):
go back to being the undisputed leaderof the precinct, voice of law
and order in your little beach town. Isn't that what you've wanted since I
walked in that door. What Iwant is to keep innocent people safe.
Gladder on the same page. Well, let's start back at the top,

(10:58):
shall we. I'm afraid I cameon a bit too strong when we first
started chatting. All right, you'reright, Oprah. While I have my
theories, I'm not sure if you'recryptid or a human. So why don't
you and I work together to provethat you're innocent. Sure, if you'd

(11:20):
rather we jump back to the accusationsand yelling, we can do that too.
No, I'm all right, thanks. It's just a bit of a
tonal shift. I feel like Imissed something. Your talk before reminded me
of my real goal here to protectcryptids, all cryptids. So the last

(11:41):
thing I'd want to do is hurtyou in the process if you were in
fact a cryptid. So, inan effort to make this as painless as
possible, could you please tell mewhat kind of cryptid you are. I'm
a cognitional ah, I see acryptid of intelligence, and no wonder you
can pass as a human. Soeasily remind me what powers do cognitionals have?

(12:05):
Again, well, they can varybased on the cryptid, of course,
always something to do with the mind, though, Yes, and your
power. I can talk to plantsreally, yep, since I was a
little kid. Amazing and not apower that one can go about proving.

(12:26):
Yeah, it's no wonder you thoughtI was a human. I look so
basic. No one can tell Ihave a power but me. It's pretty
boring, honestly, is it.Yeah? You don't hear much except I'd
like some water please, or moresunshine or wow, this light is nice
and warm. You know things thatplants think about. You work for mister

(12:50):
Torres, right, I do.What a funny coincidence that you both have
powers relating to plants. Of coursehis is much more involved, although I
do recall him remarking on how hecommunicates with plants. Oh did he yes
in one of your weekly's articles. In fact, he said, instead of

(13:11):
using words, plants communicate in tones. With time and practice, he learned
what these different tones meant and cannow use this ability to provide great care
for them. Very interesting and muchdifferent from the way you seem to describe
your ability. Well, I wasn'tbeing literal, of course, Plants can't
actually talk. It's just easier todescribe it that way. Sure, you

(13:35):
know sometimes I actually speaking of yoursupervisor. We talked a bit before about
your arrival into town. How youwere not aware of that Water's Edge was
a crypted town until your discussion withRoger. Were you aware of the existence
of the cape towns before coming toWater's Edge? No, I had no
idea. I've heard that's pretty normalfor a lot of cryptos, though it

(13:58):
is. Had you ever encountered anothercryptid before coming to Water's Edge that you'd
know of? Of course? Nope, it was all new to me.
I thought it was crazy, honestly, hearing plant voices or tones in my
head all the time. Interesting butwell. According to some research that has

(14:22):
been conducted in he and Midday, the cognitional variant is likely to be caused
by a hereditary gene mutation. Ohis it? That's what the research indicates,
which is why it's surprising that yousaid you had never met another cryptid,
considering it'd be almost impossible for yourmother, father, or grandparents to

(14:43):
all be human and for you tobe a cognitional Well, my grandma might
have been. She passed when Iwas young, I see, But nothing
from your mother or father. Howinteresting? M V. Yes, just

(15:03):
make this easy on both of us. You're human. What happened to helping
prove my innocence? Oh? Comeon, your story doesn't add up.
You're stumbling over your lies. Mypower may not work on you, but
my intuition still does. I don'tbelieve a single word coming out of your
mouth, and I don't think youdo either. You're a human, so
what if I am? Ever, since I've gotten here, I keep having

(15:24):
to be reminded of what I'm not, keep having to pretend, because if
I don't, I could lose theplace and the people I've come to call
home. When I first got here, I thought kryptid was synonymous with monster,
and I was told not to thinkin such black and whites based on
what a person is born as Butyou believe that humans are the monsters without
question, But I'm not. Iwould never do anything to hurt cryptids.

(15:46):
I'm not a monster, but youare a human. Officer Kins Oprah Rogerson
breakfast. I thought you might behungry. I'm starving. Thank you here.

(16:08):
Let me uncompy you. There's noneed for that. If Kendy isn't
around. Thanks, those things hurt. I know, is this going to
be a good cop bad cop kindof situation? Because you have to know
I'm not a threat to anyone Jenkins, much less all of town. No,

(16:30):
no, nothing like that. I'mnot working with Kendy. She doesn't
even want me in here to talkto you. But I'm not going to
sit out there and just let youstarve. Thanks. These christauants are great,
right, my sister made them.Let her know you enjoyed them.
Maybe leave out the well in policecustody part? Yeah? Does everyone know

(16:56):
already that I've been arrested? Ican't say for sure, but you know
how it isn't water's edge where ittravels fast. Yeah. I hope this
doesn't affect the weekly circulation numbers.Look at you sitting in an interrogation room,
handcuffed at the table, and whatyou're worried about, how it'll affect

(17:17):
your work. It's a safer worryto think about. I guess that's fair,
Opera. Why are you sitting here? I know you wouldn't hurt a
fly, You'd become a fixture inour community. And I know there's always
stories of I never thought they'd doit, but I was so so confident

(17:40):
that you were. Sincere Kendy won'tlisten to a word I say, but
I want to help you to dothat though I need you to be honest
with me. I am being honest. I love Water's Edge and everyone in
it, and I would never everdo anything that could put the people I
love in danger. I know thatisn't the part I was questioning. I

(18:06):
think you know the answer already.I suppose I did not. Many cryptids
are completely free of physical differences fromhumans. And then, after so many
months of never seeing or hearing aboutyou exhibiting a power, Well, so
is this it. I'm not goingto say anything to Kennedy, Opera,

(18:26):
but you're able to figure it outwith some passive observation. I'm stuck here
until she decides what she wants todo with me, and she can run
as many tests and ask me asmany questions as she wants until she figures
it out. She practically already has. I'm as good as gone. No,
no, no, I can't believethat even if she figures it out,

(18:47):
she would have to be the mostcallous person I've ever met to go
through with the mind wipe on you. You've been here too long, your
life's become too connected to cryptids,or racing that much would likely kill you.
They'd be counsel sanctioned murder at thatpoint. I think that's the plan.
They couldn't they could. Investigator Estratold me about what happened that made
Huan Monday go into hiding. Itwas bad, really really bad. They're

(19:11):
desperate to keep it from happening again, and I don't think the debate between
my life and thousands of cryptid's liveswill be a hard one for them to
settle. I won't let that happen. How you said it yourself, Investigator
Estra outranks you. If we're doingthings officially, yes, but that isn't
the only way to handle this shit, says Margo. Kendy's on her way

(19:36):
back. Just play along, tryto draw out the investigation while I figure
something out. And whatever you do, don't give her a confession. Obviously,
Jenkins, what are you doing inhere with my subject? Just bringing
her some food kind of the portalstarve. You know, if she needs
food, she can ask me yes, ma'am. So you even had the

(20:03):
police department in on your secret,Jenkins didn't know anything about this. You've
been working with him for weeks now. You would have been able to tell
fair point. At least you've gotuncomfortable enough in your deception to acknowledge that
there was something for him to know. Care to state your guilt for the
record, I'm not stating anything becauseI'm not guilty. Then prove it to

(20:26):
me. Give me something, anythingto prove you're not the human described in
this book that is prophesized to destroythe town. I've given you everything I
can. You've given me nothing.I know you're human, Avarnuniez. I
don't bother arguing. I know youwon't give me a confession. That's not

(20:47):
the part the High Council cares themost about, though. They want to
know that this threat to the cryptedway of life is neutralized. The easiest
way to do that is to findthe human from the prophecy and remove them
from the equation. We both knowthat in is you. So if you
refuse to admit fault, why don'twe talk about motive or as you claim
a lack thereof, I have nomotive. That's the whole point. Prove

(21:11):
it to me. It's the samething I've been saying this whole time.
I would never hurt Cryptids. Ilove living here in Water's Edge and the
life I've built here. I wentthrough a lot of shit before finding this
town, and it's the first placeI've ever really felt like I could call
home since I was a child. Why would I do anything to put that
in jeopardy, to put the peopleI love in jeopardy, all because some

(21:32):
books said I would. Did youever consider that maybe the book is wrong?
The book is not wrong. Howdo you know? Because it was
written by a highly skilled oracle andthe prediction Sllo wasn't an oracle. He
was a plane walker as Orthous trickedhim into writing it, and he may
claim it's true, but he alsoclaimed he wouldn't hurt Juliet and that art.
Where have I heard that name before? I don't know. He's a

(21:53):
demon who likes to mess with things. I'm sure his name gets around.
No, no, I've heard itrecently. I wonder azure thousand. Here
we go. Looks like the demonwas mentioned in some letters we found in
Hyun Mudey, the same letters thatdetailed the facts about summoning said demon and
finding out that the prophecy from thisbook was in fact true. My apologies,

(22:17):
You were correct. I suppose Ijust skimmed this section of my notes.
Excellent. That would seem to bringmy secondary case to a close.
What secondary case? The question ofwho wrote those letters that found their way
to Huyune mude It was a veryminor task in comparison to this investigation,
but the High Council wanted me tofind out who was behind the letters that

(22:38):
detailed the crypted existence and were deliveredwith such carelessness. Potentially exposing the crypted
secret is not something we take lightly. As I am sure you figured out
you said the person involved was Julietteright. Wait, No, I think
it would be safe to assume youmean Juliet Miung. She is your student
at the Universal school after all,and likely a trusted confidant after you handed

(23:03):
over the duties of the Water's Edgeweekly to her for several issues in late
fall of last year. She's justa kid when it comes to prosecuting for
violations of the Crypted Secret. TheHigh Council does not care about age.
Maybe if she were a toddler thesituation would be different, But at fourteen,
she knows the rules we have inplace here and what happens if you
break them. What happens It dependson the severity of the breach, but

(23:32):
typically the punishment is exile what forcedejection from the crypted town and in which
they live. Yes, that includescutting off any communication with crypted friends,
family members, or peers, withno ability to ever return. The Hey
Council will also likely track her forthe rest of her life in order to
ensure the secret is not spread further. You can't do that. You said

(23:56):
it yourself. She's only fourteen. How would she survive on her own?
That isn't the highs responsibility. TheHigh Council seems pretty fucked up. If
it's okay with ripping a kid awayfrom her parents over a few letters,
I don't decide their rules. Isimply investigate the violation of them. Oh,
they will be excited when I updatethem later today. You can't do
this to Juliet. Why not becausebecause I was the one who sent the

(24:22):
letters. I saw them myself.Oprah. It is not your writing style,
nor your handwriting. It can beif you leave her out of this.
Oh, really, delete this partof the interview. Take Juliet's name
out of your case file and showme the letters so I can change my
handwriting to convincingly match hers. I'lltake the fall for it if she doesn't

(24:44):
have to call her me surprised yourwords were true. You really do care
for the people in this town. How noble. But I'm afraid the council
would see right through the ruse, although they tend to gloss over details.
If most other EVI and fits acase with a charge of just attempted exposure
of the crypted secret, I'm surethey would have the time to excrutinize those

(25:07):
letters. But if a larger convictionwere to hit their desk at the same
time, well, I'm sure they'dbe willing to overlook some handwriting that doesn't
quite match. But I'm not thehuman in the prophecy. You're also not
the letter writer, but you hadno problem admitting to that. Come on,
let's just get this whole thing overwith. Give me an admission of

(25:29):
guilt and I'll help you out.You want to blame it all on me,
and you'll leave Juliet and everyone elsealone. You swear on my mother's
grave. I demand to talk tomy friends before you wipe my mind.
Then I want someone to keep youto your word. You're a high flight
risk suspect. Your friends aren't cominganywhere near you. Let me tell office
or drinkings. Then I'll allow thatonce you give me what I need.

(25:55):
