(00:02):
Welcome to town, Avrah, I'mgonna bother you for the greater good of
crypted kid. I guess you didn'ttell them everything. Then it's not a
bad idea. Okay. I thinkwe're gonna need a change of plants.
Season five, Episode three, BurningBridges. Are you sure you have everything?
(00:42):
Phones, wallets, keys, glasses, all that. Yep, got
it all. And you have enoughmotion sickness pills for the trip. Yes,
funny, you sound like you're parentingme. It's not a long trip.
You don't have to be so worried. Yeah, just a quick boat
ride into Delaware and then we grabour flight home. I doubt there will
(01:02):
be any rogue hurricanes on the way. I know. I'm just nervous.
Yeah, I can tell. I'mtrying to ignore it. I hate flying.
It's not the plane ride. I'mworried about reest. Do you mind
given us a moment? Oh,yeah, no problem. I'm so sorry
(01:25):
you're stressed about this, honey. This whole shrouding business is nerve wracking as
it is, let alone the factthat there's going to be a month until
we're under the protection of it too. But it is only a month once
the high Council comes to Bluff, everything will go back to normal, as
normal as it can without the humanworld. You mean, yes, but
(01:47):
at least we'll have our memories back, and we'll be able to travel freely
between here and Bluff. It's justhard for me to wrap my head around
how could there be magic strong enoughto make you forget that I'm your daughter.
I'm not sure. This old magicworries me with how little everyone but
the High Council seems to understand it. But I suppose they're the only source
(02:10):
of information we have. Yep,sucks anything you'd like to share. I
don't think you want to know.Have you been experimenting with old magic?
Maybe, but it's just to tryand help. I'm not doing anything dangerous.
I can handle it, you know. I know you can. Wait.
(02:34):
Really, I've been underestimating you fora while now. All the chaos
of this last year and how you'vehandled it has shown me that if you're
learning about old magic, I trustyou more than anyone to do good with
that knowledge. Oh mom, I'sstill ask you to be careful, though,
especially with who is in the know. The High Council shouldn't have that
(03:00):
kind of information. And I won'tbe giving it to them good. I'm
afraid that means that we have toget going. Oh right, okay,
I'll let you say goodbye to Reese. I'll see you soon, Nannie.
I love you. I love youtoo, Mom. We'll see each other
(03:23):
soon. I promise. Just staysafe, you too. You could still
come with us, you know Ican't not right now. I know you've
only got so much time with Kendynow you should take advantage of it.
(03:46):
Yeah, got to learn everything Ican from her about old magic. I
guess sure. Yeah, why didyou say it like that? I'm sure
you'll figure it out. God,damn it. What. I'm just really
going to miss you. It's onlya month, and you won't even remember
to miss me. I'll know somethingimportant is missing. See you soon,
(04:13):
So see you soon. Of Ovrah. The phone design must be really good
if you've been staring at it thiswhole time. Oh yeah, that's a
(04:39):
very nice leaf. It was supposedto be a swan mhm. I guess
I'll keep working on that one.Hey what, Sorry, I I think
I'm stuck in a loop in myhead. Yeah that's fair. You want
to talk it through. No oneelse around up me. I called my
(05:02):
parents last night. Oh, andI told them everything. Oh it's not
like it matters, right, I'vealready ruined everything I could possibly ruin,
and every last one of my mistakesin the human world will just be erased
in about ten minutes. I've beengiving them half truths for so long about
(05:24):
so many things. I thought, just this once, this last time,
I should be fully honest with them. I told them about you and Lizzie,
about all the times I've almost diedin the last year, about Shaya
and us. I even told themabout Sybil. I always wanted her to
be the one to tell them, but we ran out of time for that.
(05:47):
How did they take it how I'dexpect. Lots of nervous laughs that
basically translate to, oh God,do we have to send her back to
Impatient? But a lot of explainingand question answering got them to realize I
was being serious. I think itwas this stuff about Sibyl that caught them
to really believe me. Things Ishouldn't have known because I was too young,
(06:10):
and they seemed happy for me.They were thrilled to hear that hy
and I are more than a passingthing. They even asked to come visit
so they could meet you guys andreunite with Sibyl when she was ready.
I guess you didn't tell them everythingthen. I intended to, but I
just couldn't, even if it onlywould be for a few hours. I
didn't want to upset them like that. Hey, I don't blame you.
(06:33):
That's impressive that they took it sowell. Anyway, it took way longer
for Caleb to believe me when Ifirst told him, and that was when
I was standing in front of himwith wings sprouting out of my back.
Well, my dad's always sort ofbelieved in supernatural stuff. He plays it
off as a joke, but Idon't think it is not completely And Mom,
well I don't know what she's thinking, but she didn't beg me to
(06:57):
come home right away or ask ifmy measure still working, so at the
very least she doesn't think it's somehallucination. Caleb thought I had lost it,
and then he thought we both had, and in a few minutes he
won't remember me at all. Areyou going to call him dead this morning?
(07:23):
It was hard enough then. Idon't want to hear him talk to
me like I'm a stranger. Hey, guys, ready to become the above
ground Atlantis civil If anyone can reada room, it's you, Which is
why I am desperately trying to beupbeat right now. I don't want to
(07:44):
snowball this mood into something even worse. It might happen whether you like it
or not. Hey, love, how you holding up? That is the
last thing that matters right now.You are the one that's going to be
most affected by all this. Notlike I need to tell you as I
should be. I'm getting punished forwhat I did. The rest of you
are just suffering because of me.To be fair, it's not like you
(08:09):
reveal the secret to yourself. Notblaming anyone, of course, but we
all kind of had a hand inthis, That's true. Cryptids have been
giving away the secret forever. Honestly, My parents were together long enough to
have six kids. You think mymom didn't know my dad was a vampire.
Ben and I were in the fostersystem when our powers started manifesting.
I guarantee some humans saw what wasgoing on in their minds were never wiped.
(08:33):
There are whole TV shows and YouTubechannels dedicated to investigating the existence of
cryptids. The secret is a secretstill, but only because a majority of
people don't believe that we exist. All excellent points. Too bad the High
Council refuses to hear them. Kendy, Hey, well a long time no
(08:54):
see. Yeah, I've been tryingto make myself scarce since I mean,
public enemy number one. Sorry,I've just realized this is a private party.
I should go. No, stay, that's that's cool with you guys,
right, Oh yeah, our friendgroup loves public enemies right off.
(09:18):
I can't get enough. Hey Candy, h what does the shroud look like?
Well, if it's the same asHughan mid days, it'll look like
a wall of thick fuck. It'snot as depressing as that sounds, though,
(09:39):
more like a bunch of fluffy whiteclouds piled up on top of each
other. They're bright and cool tothe touch, and they let in plenty
of light. I mean they're onlyabout three stories tall or so, so
there's obviously plenty of sun coming infrom above, but it filters in on
the sides too, Like then ustedglass. It might spoil your ocean view
(10:03):
a bit, but it's not toobad. You make it sound peaceful.
It was to me. It wasthe last thing Hannah ever did, a
grand act of magic to protect thepeople she loved. I'll regret her sacrifice
forever, but I was one ofthe people she made it for. Maybe
(10:26):
that's why I find beauty in it. It still trapped you, though it
did. I never really saw thatpart as a problem. The stupid thing
she'd have got into radio before wewent into exile. There it is,
there's the shroud. It's like it'scoalescing right out of the air. Does
(10:58):
anyone else think the color is alittle It's too dark. This is nothing
like you in mid days. Yousaid they were the same. I thought
they would be. But this isn'tlike Hana's magic. This is cold dark.
It looks wrong. Oh finally,I've been looking everywhere for your goat
(11:20):
ass. Roxy. What are youdoing here? Jeez? I knew you
wouldn't be too jazzed to see me, but come on, what a hesis?
How you've been? Kill you?Hi? Have you been? Why
the fuck are you here? Well? You and Dad didn't give me much
of a choice after continuing to shutme out of restaurant conversations, so I
figured I'd come here and force youto talk to me. Of course you
(11:43):
would just barge in. You actlike I don't also have a home here.
You might be Dad's goldencrypted child, but I'm his kid too. I'm
allowed to be here whenever I want. Oh my god, I cannot deal
with this right now. I cannotdeal with this right now. I don't
mean to interrupt, but how didyou get here? Oh my god,
(12:05):
Lizzy, I didn't even recognize youfor a minute. It's been a while.
Love what you've done with your wholevibe? Oh? Thanks, I
just came in as usual, droveover the bridge, took a bit longer
than normal. They had a copthere making everyone stop and show id checking
addresses, I guess, and theylet you through. Yeah. Once I
(12:26):
explained who my dad was, theygave me a hard time, but I
know how to get where I gottago. You shouldn't have come. What
is your problem? Francy can't handlethe idea of a little competition for Dad's
legacy. No, you idiot,Look outside at what you want to show
off your lovely view or is thata storm or something. It's a wall
(12:48):
of magic that just made Mom andthe others forget that we exist. What
are you talking about someone else?Explain I need a minute. Well,
basically, the cryptid government has decidedthe only way to protect cryptids from humans
was to do this. It justwent up. Yeah, your timing is
(13:13):
it's something. Wait, so whatdoes that mean? You're all just stuck
here? We're all stuck here.Roxy. Congrats you're a Water's Edge resident
for the rest of your life. But I didn't. I just wanted to.
It doesn't matter which you just wanted. You're here now. Everyone's already
(13:35):
forgotten us. What the shroud? It makes everyone within it erased from the
memories of those outside. No,No, that's impossible. I know Crypti
stuff is weird, but this isn'tnormal cryptid stuff anymore. What about my
mom, my, other siblings? They must remember us, right? Holy
(13:58):
shit? Did you know about this? Well? Yeah, and you didn't
tell us. I called mom dad, and I had to talk to her
and Nikki and West and Jordan andPenny and explain everything and listen to Mom
sob over the phone. So don'tyou fucking dare try to pin any of
this on me. You didn't callme, you didn't pick up Welcome to
(14:20):
town. You're stuck here forever.Skipping rocks is the worst way to pass
time. Is this what we're gonnabe stuck doing after the shroud goes up
and there's no more human entertainment comingto town. You make it sound like
there's a traveling circus or something. You know what I mean? Movies,
(14:43):
video games, books, comics, music, podcast We're not gonna get any
of it. You can still guessanything on the internet, although I guess
besides the books, there might bea point where you can't get the equipment
to use any of it. Thisis so ridiculous. The new Mario Kart
comes out in less than a month, and we're never going to get a
chance to play it. Ben,there are slightly bigger things to worry about
(15:05):
than missing a game release. Iknow, did you guys tell your other
friends? Kind of? Kathleen andRosie were the only two I wanted to
tell you tell them the truth? No, I said, my dad got
transferred and we had to move rightaway. It didn't make any sense,
but they believed it enough to spendthe whole day with me yesterday, which
(15:26):
was nice, and then a fewminutes they'll forget all of that and all
of us. I basically said thesame thing to my friends early college program
that I got in last minute.I'm gonna miss them. My grandparents seemed
worried. They called this morning. My parents have been getting constant calls from
(15:48):
Camerlac over the past few days.Actually, loss of them seem scared.
It won't be that long until they'reunder this shroud two though the High councils
told them like six weeks. Yeah, it's not really that long, though.
I do wonder how that's all goingto work out. My grandparents are
just going to forget that they hasmy mom. I guess it doesn't make
(16:10):
a lot of sense to me,especially since the house is chock full of
photos of us Aul. Do youthink the High council even knows what they're
doing. It's like someone told themthey had to write a paper two hours
before it was due, and theydon't even know what the subject is.
I don't know. Maybe I'm missingsomething you aren't. I was at the
meeting. They didn't consider any ofthe counter arguments that the town reps brought
(16:32):
up, or even think about theidea to do a real vote of all
the citizens. They didn't even letme finish speaking. You spoke. Of
course she did. This is Jileswas talking about. And then they went
and counted themselves as five separate votes. What yeah, Lizzie told me about
that. Sound more like dictators thana democratic council to me, the shroud?
(16:56):
What do you yet? Jump over? Quick? Who? Who are
you? Oh? My god,Jewels, it's us, I don't know
you bench scrap her. Hey,let me go stop, Juliet, who
(17:17):
are you? Okay? Do youknow who we are? Yeah? Yeah,
I'm good. Cheers. That wastoo close that. I didn't like
that. How my leg does notfeel good? Oh? Yeah, it
looks like you got burned. Wasthat from the shroud? I guess so?
(17:40):
Huh. That thing is kind ofscary and massive. I guess that's
it. No more human world forus, No more Dalton High, no
more traveling, no more college. So what now? Now we figure out
(18:02):
a way to take it down?Yeah? Man, Roger, I was
looking for you at town hall.I wanted to what happened to your office?
Is it really that bad? No? No, I mean it's just
a little messy. That's what youget when the High Council ransacks your office.
(18:26):
They went through your stuff. Yep, well, press releases, papers,
everything offer has ever done. Theytook her old computer, although I'm
not sure they know enough about moderntechnology to know that she has a backup
of everything online. Did they findwhat they were looking for? I have
no idea. I don't even knowwhat they want. With all the records,
(18:48):
there's no reason for them to lookfor possible secret leaks. Stupid shround
to solve that problem already. That'sactually what I came here to talk to
you about about. How the lastweek has been a nightmare. How we
have to rash and food and resourcesnow since the High Council didn't bother to
help figure out how we were goingto be a self sufficient community. How
(19:10):
my ex wife called me the otherday and wasn't sure why or who I
was. I'm sorry, Lizzie,it hasn't been a good day or a
month. It's okay, I understand. Did I tell you I finally got
a job offer? He did?Yeah, the morning the shroud went up.
(19:33):
I tried to respond, but theymustn't have read it until after they
left me a voicemail saying they didn'tknow who I was and couldn't remember me
applying. They kept repeating themselves asif they were forgetting what they had just
said. Not fun. So Ican't imagine what it was like talking to
your axe. Well it's similar.Actually, she had apparently send an a
(19:56):
Lauren to call Roger, so shecalled me, but then she didn't remember
who I was or why she hadset the alarm in the first place.
I hate this damned shroud. Wecould have done this in a better way.
I mean, for God's sake. She's a cryptic too, and soon
she won't even know that our townsexist. Her kid is going to grow
(20:18):
up in a world where there's almostno unlike his family. It's not right.
Glad we're on the same page becauseI have a proposition for you.
What's that Let's make the High Counciltake down the shroud. That's a tall
order, although I imagine that's notthe end of your proposal. We need
to force a public vote on them. The majority of Water's Edge citizens don't
(20:42):
want to be cut off from therest of the world. Maybe some of
the other towns do, but thatshould be their people's decision to make,
and ours should be our own.Since the mayor declared a state of emergency,
the rules change, so technically hecould make an executive order to take
the shroud down. The High Councilisn't likely to care about that, so
(21:03):
that's out right. The other wayemergency decisions are handled, according to Water's
Edge Law, is by calling foran emergency vote. You get signatures of
fifteen percent of the registered voting publicand you can rush a vote in as
little as two weeks. So weget enough supporters to call for an emergency
public vote campaign for the removal ofthe shroud, beat them by a huge
(21:26):
margin, and then they'll have nochoice but to take it down. It's
not a bad idea, Lizzie, although I do worry about the way the
High Council does things. They don'tseem to care about how our systems work
here alrightywhere else for that matter. But they claim to be democratic. So
while that all towns vote was clearlynot, calling for an emergency vote will
(21:48):
force them to either let the votehappen and allow the democratic process to play
out, or it'll out them asthe dictators that they want to be.
That's yes, Lizzie. If wecould get the turnout and the votes,
it'll back them into a corner forsure. They'll have to take the shroud
down. They'll have no choice. It won't stop them from shrouding other towns
(22:11):
if that's what they want, butit will at least give the Cryptids a
chance to voice their opinions instead ofbeing controlled by a weighted group of representatives.
Love it now all We needed somepeople to help us start canvassing.
We need those signatures to call avote in the first place. We've got
to get some people who are motivated, passionate and energyized. Young people should
be good. Oh we've got thatcovered, hi, Roger. Lizzie told
(22:36):
us to wait outside till you areconvinced on the plan. We want that
shroud gone, and if we're notallowed to vote, be sure as hell
want to help get other people too. Wow, Lizzie, you really got
a plan here. What does thatjob you ended up getting offered? Yo?
Assistant manager for a reelection campaign? Why no reason? Thanks for listening.
