La historia de la química hoy en día reivindica el nombre de mujeres como Marie Curie, Berta Karlik, Ida Noddack, Marguerite Perey, Rosalind Franklin, y en Colombia, mujeres como Ángela Restrepo Moreno, microbióloga y una de las científicas más importantes del país que aportó a nivel mundial en diferentes investigaciones; son mujeres que desafiaron los sesgos culturales de su tiempo e hicieron la diferencia en el ámbito científico. En la actualidad, a pesar de que existe mayor conciencia por la necesidad de tener espacios laborales y científicos equitativos y libres de discriminación, aún existen barreras que desincentivan la participación de la mujer en el mercado laboral.
