Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome. I'm doctor Sabrinafalki, a host of culinary medicine recipe.
Today we're making easy mocktails, colorful, refreshing, and made with
simple ingredients that could even come from your backyard, and
many of these ingredients did. More and more research shows
that reducing alcohol, or even taking regular breaks from it,
can make a real difference in how you feel. Alcohol
affects your sleep quality, hydration, and even how our body

(00:26):
regulates energies and moods. As a physician, I see firsthand
how small mindful shifts like enjoying a beautiful mocktail instead
of a cocktail can support better rest, clearer thinking, and
overall well being. And honestly, you don't miss the alcohol
when the flavor and the experience are this good. These simple,
naturally delicious mocktails are hydrating, satisfying, and perfectly aligned with

(00:49):
culinary medicine where flavor, health, and enjoyment all come together.
So let's start with our first one. This is a
hamaika or hibiscus lime spritzer. These are dried hibiscus flowers
that you can get if you have a Latin market
here in San Diego. You can get them at pretty
much any grocery store. You can also buy them online.
They create a gorgeous, deep crimson color that feels perfect

(01:11):
for the holidays or any festive occasion. I love hibiscus tea.
I drink it warm in the winter months and cold
in the summer as an iced tea, but this version
feels extra festive. And all you need to do is
simmer the dried flowers in water, and simmering means a
low boil for five to ten minutes, turn it off,
drain off the flowers, and then put it in the
fridge and it'll last up to a week. Make sure

(01:34):
it's cold before you make this drink. It's one of
the classic ingredients in a traditional Mexican Christmas punch, and
it brings back beautiful memories of family gatherings that I
had when I lived in Mexico City as a little girl.
So here we're going to add to our shaker. There's
ice in there already. I've added some of the hibiscus
tea and the ice and lime juice. And it's a

(01:54):
squeeze a half a line and half a cup of
the hibiscus tea to shake it up, and then I
have chosen my glass. I have a large ice cube
in there, or you can use a few ice cubes.
Fill up two thirds of the way with what came
out of the mixer, and then top it off with
sparkling water, and that's it. The next one I'm making

(02:18):
is a strawberry basil sparkler. It's a mix of freshness, color,
and simplicity. This one is a favorite in my house.
My daughter asks for it all the time. And you
can use fresh strawberries in the summer and frozen strawberries
in the winter. So you muddle, which means squishing your strawberries,
which is about four or five strawberries, and you're gonna
put two large basil leaves, and you can also add

(02:39):
two or three mint leaves as well. We're gonna squish
it down once it's squished or muddled. And again for
a muddler, you can use anything you might have in
your bar equipment. If you have that, you can also
muddle using a fork or the back of a spoon.
I'm going to put in a shaker. This shaker has ice,
but it also has still water in it. Half a
cup of still water. You're gonna add your muddled strawberries.

(03:03):
You're gonna shake, shake, shake it up, and then we're
gonna pour it out and we're gonna see this one
has this beautiful light pink color. I'm filling that again
two thirds of the way full. Top it off with
sparkling water, and that's our second refresher. And finally the
mint moheto refresher. It's crisp, hydrating and uplifting. This one's

(03:24):
based on my wedding specialty drink and I still love
it today because it's so refreshing and completely family friendly.
So in this case, we're gonna put the juice of
one whole lime into a muddler or a cup with
a flat bottom. I'm gonna add spragu of mint, and
there's about eight mint leaves in there, and now we're
gonna get muddle that down. And what the muddling does

(03:46):
is it helps the natural oils from the mint be
released into that lime juice. And this one you can
actually have right there. You can leave the muddle mint
at the bottom of your glass and you're gonna add
some ice cubes and top it off again without sparkling water,
and you can use whichever glass you want. And I
love to bring out barware that I've had in my

(04:08):
house or that has been passed down from generations. And
for all of these you can add an edible flower.
So here I have some pansies from my garden, or
you can skip that all together, and you can add
a slice of your favorite citrus. Since you've been using lines,
you can use a slice of that. All of these
add beauty, and they just add the celebratory aspect and
the beauty before you even take your first sip. So

(04:29):
these simple, naturally delicious mocktails prove that health and flavor
go hand in hand. Thanks for being here. If you

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
