Welcome to the Culture Building Like a Pro podcast, helping
small business owners and managers lead a company culture where
employees are engaged to do their best work because they
want to and not because they have to. Now, let's
jump start your culture transformation with company culture strategists, leadership
coach and trainer Deanna Appling.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Heavy Tuesday and thanks for listening to the Culture Building
Like a Pro podcast. I'm Deana and I'm excited to
be back with you again this week for another episode
in our hash tag Leadershift series. In these episodes, we
talk about the common challenges that we tend to face
as leaders, you know, the ones that don't get talked

(00:48):
about enough, and how to overcome them. But more importantly,
we dive into how you can shift into the level
of leadership that creates an impact and influences x among
your team. And last week's episode, if you haven't listened
to it, I encourage you to check that out before
this one, but we talked about how you can shift

(01:11):
from being insecure about creating leaders into becoming an impactful
leader in their professional journey. So again, check that out
if you haven't already. But one of the things that
we talked about in that episode is imposter syndrome. And
if you're not familiar with imposter syndrome, it's basically an

(01:33):
inward dialogue that we tend to have with ourselves, and
this impostor basically tells us that we aren't good enough,
we are inadequate, we can't measure up, we shouldn't be
where we are, and it tells us this based off
of really no evidence. To be honest, so factually and

(01:57):
what is proven and things that we can see where
you deserve to be where you are. Imposter syndrome makes
you feel very anxious and tries to convince you to
believe that you shouldn't be there or you shouldn't have
what you have. And because I believe imposter syndrome is
such a big thing with leaders, especially new leaders, and

(02:19):
I know this from my own experience but also from
talking to other leaders and clients that I've worked with,
I want to make sure that we dive into ways
that you can overcome this if you are battling with it.
So in this episode, we're talking about how you can
shift from impostor to influential. Now before we talk about

(02:44):
how you can overcome imposter syndrome, in your leadership journey.
I want us to talk a little bit more about
what imposter syndrome is and understanding it better and debunk
some of the myths around imposter syndrome. One common belief
about it is that it only affects those who are

(03:05):
inexperienced or unqualified, but that is not true. Imposture syndrome
has a sneaky way of affecting people at any stage
of their career. So it doesn't matter if you have
tons of accomplishments or if you're a beginner, if you
just landed this leadership role, or if it's your first role,

(03:27):
or if you've been in it for fifteen years. Imposter
syndrome isn't a reflection of your capabilities. What it is
is simply a product of your inner critic. And this
inner critic is running wild and causing a lot of
chaos inside. So if you feel like you are struggling

(03:48):
with imposter syndrome and like it's getting the best of you,
you may be believing these three myths. And I'm going
to give you strategies on how to overcome and essentially
debunk these myths. The first is thinking that you're not
qualified enough That was a little triggering for me because

(04:11):
that was something that I faced so long although there
was evidence supporting that it was untrue, and if I'm
being honest, it's still something that I have to practice
telling myself that it's untrue. So what I want you
to do is something that I did, And this is

(04:31):
a strategy, an action step that will help you debunk
this myth, but also reaffirm and reassure you that you
are qualified and you are enough. I want you to
take inventory of your skills, think about your experiences, everything
that you've achieved, first and foremost, acknowledge how long of

(04:52):
a way that you've come, and based off of these
things that you have proven factual evidence of. This is
proof that you are more than qualified. Then you give
yourself credit for The next myth is believing I'm just lucky.
It's only a matter of time before people realize that
I'm a fraud. When we say it out loud, it

(05:15):
can seem a bit extreme, But if we're honest with ourselves,
how many times have you thought that? How many times
have you thought that you got a certain opportunity, or
you were promoted, or you achieved something and it was
a fluke because you really didn't deserve it, and people
are going to find you out. They're going to shine

(05:36):
that spotlight on you and bring the cameras to prove
that you're a fraud, you're an imposter. If you battle
with this thought, I want you to recognize all of
the hard work that you've done in the accomplishments that
you've made. I personally don't believe in luck, and I
don't want you to believe in luck either. I want

(05:58):
you to believe in purpose and positioning. Now, while you
may have received maybe a once in a lifetime opportunity
and experience a form a favor of grace, and it
seems a little too good to be true, that doesn't
take away from the fact that your dedication, your skill set,

(06:19):
your talent, and your gifts are what got you where
you are. And the third myth is believing that you
have to be perfect. This is another one makes my
chest to get a little heavy just saying it because
I relate to it so much. I battled with this

(06:40):
thought so much. You don't need to be perfect, You
just need to progress, and in order to progress, that
means you have to get better. Striving for perfection is
a myth because we're human. I want you to instead
look at the things that you may have to work

(07:00):
a little harder, at the mistakes that you've made, or
even what you might consider a weakness for yourself or
an area of improvement. Don't look at it as being imperfect,
but embrace those things and understand that those are opportunities
for your growth. That helps prove that you're where you're
supposed to be where you are because you've gone through

(07:23):
what it took to get there. You do not have
to be perfect to be an effective leader. You just
need to be authentic. And to be authentic means to
acknowledge where you've come from, the makings of what brought
you to where you are, and being transparent enough to
share this with the people that you're leading so that

(07:46):
they know they don't have to be perfect either. They
just need to embrace the things that they need to
strengthen and that they can get to ultimately where you
are as well. So now that we know some of
the men of imposter syndrome and we've talked about what
you can do some actionable steps to overcome those ways

(08:07):
of thinking and being, let's dive into an approach that
I use for myself and for my clients to become
an influential leader, and that's by tapping into your sauce. Yes,
I said your sauce. Something that I help my coaching
clients get very clear on is their sauce. And that

(08:31):
is what I call basically your unique blend of leadership
qualities that set you apart and make you influential as
a leader. Now, everybody's sauce is different. It's unique to you.
It's the makings of you, the things that brought you
to where you are, that put you in the position
that you're in. And I personally believe that if every

(08:55):
leader gets clear on their sauce, you will see much
more transfer in how you lead others and how they
engage with you. Because, let's face it, in my opinion,
we can give people the recipe. And what's the recipe.
I'm talking about the leadership books, the theories, the articles.

(09:16):
We can do all of this. We can look on
the internet and we can easily type in how to
be an effective leader and so many things will come up,
useful things at that I'm not even saying that they're wrong,
but you can have the recipe, and you can try
to duplicate the recipe, but what makes it good and
what makes it impactful is when you put your sauce

(09:39):
on it. So that's what we're going to talk about today. Now.
I know you're probably wondering where in the world this
sauce come from? Why is she calling this sauce? And
that's because sauce is an acronym for a few things,
and the S and sauce stands for service. To be
a leader who shifts from empowts syndrome to being influential

(10:02):
is a leader who focuses on service, meaning you're removing
obstacles for those that you lead. This is also a
powerful way to combat imposter syndrome and to help you
shift your focus from self doubt that lying in our
critic that you have inside of you, to service. So
simply ask yourself, how can I remove obstacles for my team?

(10:25):
And that's by prioritizing their needs. And when you do this,
you not only empower your team, but you gain a
sense of purpose and fulfillment in your leadership role because
you're helping to create an impact.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
The A in.

Speaker 2 (10:39):
Sauce stands for ad and that is for you to
add value and usefulness. I want you to challenge the
belief that you have to be perfect to be influential.
That is so untrue. Instead, focus on adding value and
usefulness to what you do and to who you lead.

(11:00):
You have a unique perspective based off of all of
your experiences, the things that you've learned, the things that
you've witnessed, achieved and accomplished, and that alone brings an
incredible amount of value to the table. So embrace your
strengths and leverage what you've done, what you've learned, and
what you've overcome to help you make a meaningful impact

(11:23):
with your team. The U in sauce stands for unique,
and not only want you to think about what makes
you unique, but think about this in a way of
embracing your authenticity. So embracing the little things about you
that is specific and unique to you. Recognize that your background,

(11:44):
your skills, and your perspective, which is very key. And
I believe that a lot of people lose sight of
how powerful your perspective is and how it makes you unique.
This is what makes you a valueable leader. And when
you tap into that and try not to focus on

(12:06):
copying other leaders. This allows you to step into being
yourself in the most authentic way so that your team
can connect to you in that way as well. The
sea and Sauce stands for commit You have to commit
to making a difference every day if you want to

(12:26):
be an influential leader. Sometimes imposter syndrome stems from that
fear of not measuring up to what's expected of you.
But I want you to not focus on the external validation,
so the validation that comes from the outside, that comes
from people, that comes from titles. I want you to

(12:48):
commit to simply making a difference every day in the
lives of those that you lead. That's the influential part
of you, So regardless of who sees it, regardless of
the recognition that you get from it, I want you
to commit to doing that so that your impact will
begin to speak louder than your self doubt. And you

(13:10):
can do this by setting meaningful goals and taking action
on them every day. And when I say meaningful goals,
I mean the goals that actually create impact. Being a
leader who cares about their team. What's if that's something
meaningful to you and that you've determined that you want

(13:30):
to master in your leadership journey and you want others
to experience, I want you to decide what those goals are,
what those tasks and actions are that will reflect that.
And lastly, the eat and sauce stands for empathize. I
want you to focus on understanding the needs of your team.

(13:53):
Once you cultivate empathy as a pillar in your leadership approach,
you'll start to create connection with your team. So, in
other words, seek to understand their needs and their challenges
and even their aspirations. When you empathize with your team,
you'll begin to build trust with them and create an

(14:16):
environment where they feel like they can thrive there and
more importantly, that they have a leader who cares about
how they grow as professionals and not just the work
that they do. If you have any questions about this episode,

would benefit from it, please send this episode have them
join the team here of being more impactful leaders, and

(14:59):
also leave an honest rating and review in Apple podcasts
or wherever you're listening from. Remember that your sauce as
a leader is your unique land of service, value, authenticity, commitment,
and empathy. Use this to help you in your leadership

(15:19):
journey and how you approach your team on a day
to day basis. Remember that you have the power to
make a difference, and that power supersedes imposter syndrome. You
are where you are because you're supposed to be there,
and you bring something so unique to the role that
you're in that even if someone else can fill those

(15:42):
shoes and perform the job tasks that you have, it
does not mean that they can create the impact that
you can. That's the value of your sauce, and the
sooner that you tap into that and silence that voice
of imposter syndrome that can sometimes be so loud internally,
you'll start to see more of an authentic and engaging

(16:06):
connection with your team, and you'll start to see meaningful
and even more productive and engaging results with your team
simply by your influence. Have a great week.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
