Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to the Culture Building Like a Pro podcast, helping
small business owners and managers lead a company culture where
employees are engaged to do their best work because they
want to and not because they have to. Now, let's
jump start your culture transformation with company culture strategists, leadership
coach and trainer Deanna Appling.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Happy Tuesday, and thanks for listening to the Culture Building
Like a Pro podcast. I'm Deanna, and I hope that
you've been doing well. I hope that these latest episodes
of our hashtag Leadershift series have been useful and valuable
for you, and that you're ready to dive into more.

(00:49):
We're continuing on with our series and in our Hashtag
Leadershift episodes, we talk about common challenges that we face
as leaders, the challenges that don't get talked about enough honestly,
and how to overcome them. But more importantly, we dive
into how you can shift into the level of leadership
that creates an impact and influences excellence among your team.

(01:13):
One thing that is so important to me you probably
know if you listen to this podcast, but I am
so incredibly passionate and dedicated to helping new leaders essentially
find their footing when it comes to this world of leadership.

(01:34):
Why because oftentimes people who step into a new leadership
role don't really have a blueprint of what to do
as a leader. There is a very big difference between
being a manager and being a leader. Managers manage processes,
which essentially means you can do your job very well,
you know the process is very well, which is likely

(01:57):
how you got to be into a managerial role. But
leaders lead and influence people, and sometimes that is not
talked about as often as it should be in the workplace,
and especially for those entering into the role of being
a new leader. How do I know this because I

(02:18):
was one of those people who was very good at
my job, got promoted, became a leader, and realized pretty
soon that even though I knew the work, I did
not know how to lead people, and definitely not as
well as I thought I did. That put me on

(02:38):
a path of making a lot of mistakes and also
having to overcome a very very sharp learning curve simply
because I didn't have the tools and the resources needed
to be a good leader or to be set up
for success as a new leader. Honestly, that's a lot
of the reason why this podcast was even create it.

(03:01):
And in this episode, I want to tap into one
of the things that I know that I struggled with
becoming a new leader and becoming a better leader at
that and I've witnessed a lot of other leaders struggle
with as well, including those that I've worked with and coaching.
So what we're going to do is dive into how

(03:22):
you can shift from being passive in your new leadership
journey to giving yourself permission. We're going to talk about
quite a few things that you can give yourself permission
to do and to be.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
As your new leader.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
But this will also help position you to have a
greater impact in your new leadership role. As a new leader,
it's so easy to fall into this trap of feeling
incapable or unsure about your capabilities, which ultimately leads you
to being passive in your approach as a leader. But

(04:01):
here's the thing. You have everything that it takes to
lead and make a difference. You just need to give
yourself permission to do so. So we're going to break
down some steps that are very actionable for you to
take that will help you reach your own potential in
leadership and allow you to grant your self permission to

(04:25):
be the leader that you desire to be. Now, the
first thing that I want you to do is to
give yourself permission to lead, and specifically to lead differently.
You're not a robot. There's no one like you. There
is no copy paste version of you, and there is
no mold, no cookie cutter mold of what a leader

(04:46):
should be. Give yourself permission to lead authentically in a
way that aligns with your values, your strength, your personality,
and your perspective. Your uniqueness is what will help you
really shine and create impact in your leadership style. Now,
while we're talking about uniqueness, if you haven't listened to

(05:09):
last week's episode, I highly recommend that you listen to
that in terms of what you can do to tap
into your uniqueness, and that is episode one hundred and
sixty one and it's titled hashtag Leadership From Imposter to Influential,
And that'll give you more of a guided step of
how your uniqueness adds value to your team and propels

(05:33):
you further in your leadership journey. The second thing I
want you to give yourself permission to do is to
make decisions. It sounds really simple, right, but if you're
a new leader. I know that you know how it
feels to be a bit unsure about when you can
take authority and make certain decisions and when you shouldn't.

(05:56):
But as a leader, I want to remind you that
this role now positions you to make certain decisions to
impact your team and organization. And if you're in this role,
it's because you're being trusted to do so. You've displayed
or shown some capability that says that you can do this.

(06:17):
I know it may seem intimidating to do, but don't
be afraid to trust your instincts and make some calls
that are tough. That's a part of leadership sometimes and
it's necessary. So give yourself permission to be decisive, and
not only that, be confident in your decision making process.
If you want more guidance on how to be more

(06:40):
decisive in your leadership, I will link an episode where
we talked about that in more depth in the show notes,
so be sure to check that out. The third thing
I want you to do is to give yourself permission
to define your vision. So here's the cheat code. Sometimes
we forget this, but I want to remind you of this,

(07:02):
and I want you to keep it in the forefront
of your mind. A leader who is not clear on
where they're going will lead people nowhere. I'm gonna say
that again for the people in the bag, just in
case you didn't hear clearly, A leader who is not
clear on where they're going will lead people nowhere. You

(07:23):
need a vision, and you need to define what that
vision is. And as a leader, you have the power
to shape that vision and the direction of your team
even if you haven't been given one by corporate and
this does happen oftentimes, so I don't want you to
wait for someone else to define your vision for you.

(07:46):
Give yourself permission to really dream big and create a
vision that inspires and motivates your team to greatness. And
you can do this by focusing on your leadership vision.
This is separate from your performance objectives that have been
given to you by HR and the company as a whole.

(08:08):
This is specifically your vision of how you want to
lead and where you want to see your team and
how you plan to get them there, and the impact
that you want to make along the way. If you
need help understanding what a leadership vision is and how
to get started with one, I'll also link another episode
where we talked about this in the show notes to

(08:29):
get you started. The fourth thing I want you to
do is give yourself permission to set the tone. Your
attitude and your demeanor set the tone for your team's culture. Why.
Because you're the mirror. You as a leader have a
unique position in your role to showcase, not just tell,

(08:53):
but showcase to your team what is considered normal and
acceptable and what isn't. So give yourself permission to lead
with positivity, empathy, and even respect and resilience. Be the
example that you want to see in your team. And
when you do this, you'll see them follow suit because
they have a model to follow. Number five, give yourself

(09:18):
permission to be brave. One thing I wish I had
just an idea of, or was made aware of getting
into leadership for the first time is that it requires courage.
You have to have the courage to take risks, to
speak up and stand up for what you believe in,

(09:40):
and stand up for your team. Sometimes we tend to
look for that outside validation from our superiors or executive
level management or or something from the outside to say, yes,
you should go in this direction, Yes you should do this,
and that doesn't happen oftentimes, especially in leadership, and this

(10:03):
is where you have to hone into your positioning as
a leader and really give yourself that permission to be
brave when things seem uncertain, when conflict arises, you have
to have the courage to stand up for what is right,
what you stand for as a leader, what your company

(10:23):
stands for, and ultimately what you want your team to
stand up for as well. And remember that true leadership
will oftentimes require you to step outside of your comfort
zone to do this. Next, give yourself permission to have
the conversation. Why, Because difficult conversations are a part of leadership,

(10:48):
no matter how uncomfortable it is. Give yourself permission to
have those conversations, whether it's related to performance issues with
your team, resolving conflicts that may have come up, or
simply providing feedback. This is the fun part oftentimes of
being a leader, the unpretty stuff that many times we

(11:11):
know is a part of the job, but we aren't
given the tools to do so. So I encourage you
if you're having trouble with approaching that conversation with someone
on your team that you've been avoiding for so long,
simply remember to approach them with empathy, honesty, a willingness
to listen, and offering how you can help support them

(11:35):
and what they need to overcome certain challenges. Number seven,
give yourself permission to delegate. You don't have to do
it alone, and you're not supposed to. That's why you
have a team. Give yourself permission to delegate tasks and
responsibilities to your team members because that's what they're there for,

(11:56):
and you have to show them that you trust their
abilities and empower them to take ownership of their work
when you delegate, and not only helps relieve you of
some of the workload, but it also helps cultivate a
sense of trust and autonomy with your team and it
helps them strengthen their skill sets as well. Delegation is

(12:20):
something that many leaders struggle with, whether you're new or not,
and I did do an episode specifically on how you
can delegate more effectively and that will be left in
the show notes as well if you find yourself struggling
with that. And lastly, number eight, I want you to

(12:41):
give yourself permission to take care of yourself again. This
is Deanna here from the Culture Building Like a Pro podcast,
and I give you permission, and I want you to
give you permission to take care of you. You have
to take breaks, have to recharge, and you have to

(13:03):
prioritize your well being. Why, Because you are human and
not a robot. You need to be refueled and recharged
and poured into so that you can pour into your team.
This goes for your role as a leader professionally and

(13:25):
your most important role that you'll always have as a person.
Get clear on what you need to fill your own
cup and to refuel yourself so that you can give
your best when you are leading. If you find yourself
struggling with some of the challenges that a lot of

(13:48):
new leaders face. Myself included when I became a leader
for the first time, things like being passive and just
knowing what to give yourself permission to do in this
new role. And you need help, unique guidance. You want
to plan, you want the accountability to be able to

(14:09):
grow in your leadership journey and your impact with your team.
I have a program that would be perfect for you,
and it's called New Leader, Big Impact. If you're interested
in joining this program, you can apply by going to
beaproinc dot com slash New Leader big impact and the

(14:30):
link will be listed in the show notes. I would
love the opportunity to work with you and help you
reach your goals and gain your confidence in leadership. If
you have any questions about this episode, don't hesitate to
reach out to me. I can be reached via email
and that addresses culture at Business advocatespro dot com, which
is left in the show notes. And feel free to

(14:52):
share this episode with someone who you think would benefit
from it. Remember that you give yourself permission in your
leadership role. You give yourself permission to lead, to make decisions,
to define the vision, to be brave, and to ultimately
have the impact that you were put in position to make.

(15:16):
There may not be people in place to give you
that outside validation and thumbs up that you're doing something
right or to tell you when to do something, and
that is a muscle that you'll have to exercise often
to get stronger in. But it's possible, and you were
putting this role for a reason, So give yourself the

(15:39):
permission to be the leader that you desire to be.
And the sooner you do this, you'll start to see
a greater impact with your team and get a head
start in creating that culture that you desire for you
and your team have a great week.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
