Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to the Culture Building Like a Pro podcast, helping
small business owners and managers lead a company culture where
employees are engaged to do their best work because they
want to and not because they have to. Now, let's
jump start your culture transformation with company culture strategists, leadership
coach and trainer Deanna Applin.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Happy Tuesday, and thanks for listening to the Culture Building
Like a Pro podcast. I'm Deanna, and we are back
with another episode of our hash tag Leadershift series. And
if you've been listening for a while, you know that
this series was specifically created to talk about the common
challenges that we tend to face as leaders, but the
ones that don't get talked about enough, and more importantly,

(00:51):
how to overcome them and shift into the level of
leadership that creates an impact and influences excellence among your team. Now,
I don't know about you, but I feel like I
can be honest here and something that I partake in
fairly often, I would say, is what I would call

(01:13):
trash back therapy. Now here's what trash bag therapy is
to me. And you may have heard this term before,
but every so often I just get this urge to purge,
to just get rid of stuff, and I just get
the big commercial size trash bags and I just go

(01:33):
around my house cleaning things out. Some stuff is actually trash,
and some stuff I just give away, but it's something therapeutic.
It's why it's called trash back therapy, about just getting
rid of stuff. But before I even get to that point,
sometimes it becomes a little overwhelming for me. I can
just see things, or get to the point where I'm

(01:55):
looking for things around the house and closets, and it
just seems so hard to find exactly what I'm looking for,
or it's just so much to go through, and it
gets daunting, so much so that it can cause you
to procrastinate with actually purging more often than we should.
But even in doing that, I started to think about

(02:18):
what happens when I get into this mode, and that
daunting feeling really comes because I'm looking at the entire
picture as a whole. I'm looking at everything that I
have to go through, all of the storage totes, all
of the closets, everything that I have to go through,
and rightfully so, it can seem like a lot, it

(02:41):
can seem overwhelming. But what I realized, because this is
just how I tend to think it seems to be
easy for me to reverse engineer, so to speak, certain
behaviors and habits that I may have, and also see
how it's reflected in others areas of my life, and

(03:02):
I realize that this is something that not only I face,
but it's something that we face in leadership oftentimes because
we have a lot on our plates. There are so
many things to get done, so many deadlines, so many
things you're responsible for in a leadership role. And that's
just the task part of it. Let's not forget the

(03:26):
being present piece of it, the actual important part of
being a leader, and that's leading people. It can become
so overwhelming to think about all the things that need
to change that you want to change, things that your
team has voiced to you that you need to pay
attention to, and it just becomes a snowball that keeps
growing and growing, and before you know it, you find

(03:48):
yourself not taking any action because the idea of taking
action seems impossible to do. So for today's Leadershift, we
are going to talk about how you can overcome that.
We are talking about how you can shift from trying
to implement all of the changes at once to incremental change.

(04:12):
When it comes to making changes in your leadership habits
and over all your leadership style, it's important to shift
your perspective. It starts with how you see things. So
instead of solely focusing on the end result, the big picture,
the outcome that you're trying to achieve, think about the
person you want to be, meaning what kind of leader

(04:35):
do you truly aspire to become. And when you align
your goals with your values and your identity, you can
then start to set yourself up for success and actually
achieve that outcome in a productive way. So we're going
to dive into five ways, five simple and real life

(04:58):
ways that you can take action so you can start
to incorporate incremental changes into your daily leadership practices so
that you can see change take place on your team
and in your leadership journey. The first incremental change to
make is to specify each change. So here's what I mean.

(05:19):
Break down your goals into simple, small, actionable steps. So
for each change you want to make, specify the end result,
what is that goal, and then also identify the person
you need to be or the habit that you need
to have to cultivate this change and more importantly, sustain it.

(05:43):
So notice that I didn't just say specify the goal
itself and the end result, but more importantly, you have
to attach what type of leader you need to be
to see this change happen. What habit must you have.
So let's for example, maybe you want to be more
punctual as a leader, meaning that you want to arrive

(06:07):
at the office early or just simply start work early.
If you work remotely, you want to be ahead of
your team, so obviously that's your end goal. You want
to be ahead of your team and available before your
team starts to work. But the type of habit that
you would need and the type of leader that you
would need to be to do this and to achieve

(06:29):
this goal is someone who is more aware of their time,
who manages not more so your time because time can't
be changed, but manage your tasks more accurately so that
you can be available for your team. That may look
like you carving out time in the morning and shifting

(06:50):
your morning routine a bit more so that you can
be available for work early so you can plug and play.
Whatever end result or goal that you want in this scenario,
But the key is to specify the change and the
habit that is attached to that change, so that you
can stay focused and hold yourself accountable for who you

(07:14):
need to be to make this goal happen. The second
change that you would make is commit to one habit
per month, just one. I know you are overachiever. I
know you want to get all of the changes done
at once and see progress. I get it, I understand,
but hear me out. Instead of trying to implement all

(07:38):
of the changes you need to make at once, implementing
one change and committing to that per month is what's
going to help you build that habit so it can
sustain you, so it can keep going. So it's not
something that you're doing temporarily, but something that you are
making momentum in building ongoing. Something I always say is

(08:02):
that moments are good, but momentum is what makes progress.
And you want this gradual approach to help you build
that momentum so that you can see the effects of
your change long term. And the reason why I said
just one habit a month, not two, not three, not five,
is because focusing on that one thing also helps you

(08:26):
get in the mindset of mastery doing something consistently for
thirty days will help it become so a part of
your routine, your behaviors, your patterns that moving on past
those thirty days will seem like second nature for you,
and that's what we want. We want it to keep going. Now,

(08:47):
after you've gotten to a point where you feel like
you've mastered that one habit, you can then add to
the next and before you know it, you're starting to
see yourself become a different type of leader and also
see the results of the progress you're making. Number three,
take action every single day. Consistency is key. I know

(09:11):
we hear this, but it truly is key when it
comes to creating long term change. So make it a
habit to take small, actionable steps towards your goal every
single day. Again, this goes back to what we just
talked about about that one habit change. So whether it's
setting aside time for you to reflect or plan or brainstorm,

(09:33):
which is highly important. Thinking time is something you should
put in your schedule, or it's practicing listening and active
listening at that or if it's you making a point
to seek feedback from your team. You can do this
and implement this every single day because those small actions
not only add up over time, but it will continue

(09:57):
to be a habit and more of a behavioral change
for you. So it's second nature for you to do
these things ongoing. Next, track your progress. This is something
I feel we don't do often enough, and this is
also why it may seem like we're not making any

(10:17):
progress because we're not tracking it. Keep track of the
small winds along the way. So whether you make it
a point to journal how your day win, or break
down your week at the end of the week or
even your month, or just taking that time to just
sit back and reflect on the achievements that you've made.

(10:38):
When you monitor your progress, it helps you stay motivated
and keep that momentum going as you're tackling your goals.
And the last incremental change that I encourage you to
make is to celebrate those wins. No matter how small
it is, you still did something, You still may progress,

(11:00):
You still made a win, and everyone deserves to be celebrated.
A win is simply a milestone, and acknowledging that milestone
gives you that fuel to keep going further, the same
way that you would acknowledge the small wins of someone
on your team, a colleague and encourage them to not

(11:21):
dismiss the progress that they've made. Give that same approach
to yourself first, because your wins matter too. If you've
found this episode helpful, or if you think somebody else
would find it useful, I would love it if you
could share it with them and leave an honest rating

(11:41):
or review an Apple Podcasts or wherever you're listening from,

reach out to me directly. The email address is Culture
at Business advocatespro dot com, which is always left in
the show notes. Remember that leadership is not about a
deest the nation, but it's truly about the journey and

(12:03):
the evolution of you in that journey. When you embrace
the power of incremental changes and committing to just shifting
one habit per month, you have the opportunity to create
long lasting impact in your leadership approach and how you
influence your team. It's not just about the end result,

(12:25):
it's about who you become along the way while achieving
that end result. So take these steps that we talked
about today, take action, implement them, stay consistent, and watch
as you start to see yourself transform into the leader
that you desire. To be have a great week,

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
