us. Also, Sony into Friendsat iHeart Radio on Amazon Music for glad
you all can join us as well. Was this part of our newsic and
youse segment here at WYAD. Andtoday we're talking about something that so many
people deal with, and that ishigh blood pressures. Were beginning a new

(00:44):
year, a lot of people aretrying to be healthier. Unfortunately, though,
high blood pressure is one of thosethings that is a growing health epidemic.
Half of Americans have high blood pressureand seventy five percent of them don't
have an under control well. Thereis a new option that's available to help
individual struggle with their high blood pressurehere to talk to us about it.
Today, we're excited to welcome doctorBarry Bertolae to our broadcast. Get the

(01:06):
carniologist's joining us from the North MississippiMedical Center. Want to talk to them
knowingly about what high blood pressure hypertensionis, but also about this new treatment
option. Doctor Berdlelie. Thank youagain for the time. We do appreciate
it. Yeah, thank you forthe opportunity to be here today with you.
Well, this is a big topicand here in the South, of
course, I mean, we hearso much about about high blood pressure and
the dangers of it. Hypertension,of course is also what it's called,

(01:30):
doctor Bertolaz, So let's begin there. What exactly is hypertension. So hypertension
is high blood pressure. So weall have a blood pressure that is the
circulating pressure of blood moving through ourblood vessels. But sometimes that blood pressure
can become too hot, and wedefine that when it's measured at one hundred

(01:51):
and forty millimeters of mercury or higher. So one forty or higher would be
high blood pressure. And unfortunately, with that's medical consequences. So we can
see that at that higher number, you're an increased risk of a stroke,
heart attack, heart failure, orkidney failure. And as you correctly pointed
out, very high risk in theSouth. And it's one of those things

(02:15):
too, as I talked to familymembers, Doctor burda Ley, a lot
of times, things we don't thinkabout that are dealing with their kidneys can
be tied back into hypertension and thenhigh blood pressure. Just why does this
conversation get so important? But technologyis definitely helping us out. So tell
us about this new error for thetreatment of high blood pressure. Yes,
the FDA recently approved a new medicalprocedure for the treatment of high blood pressure.

(02:42):
This is a metronic simplicity renal system. And then this is a minimally
invasive procedure that can now help uslower blood pressure in people that their blood
pressures can't be controlled through diet andthe attemptive medications. And that's what this
conversation is so important. Can youtell us more about the procedure, doctor

(03:02):
Burdeley, and who exactly is agreat candidate for it. Yes, So
this procedure is done somewhat like ahardcat and the fact that it's a minimally
invasive procedure, it's done through asmall puncture and a blood vessel. We
then go up to the kidney arterywith a specially designed cafeter. We then

(03:23):
send radio frequency waves through the bloodvessel wall and we disrupt or calm down
the nerves that are going into andout of the kidney. And when we
do that, that helps us lowerthe blood pressure. After we do that
procedure, nothing is left behind. We pull everything out and after about three

(03:45):
hours of observation, then the patientcan go home, so it's an outpatient
procedure. This procedure has been provento be effective, meaning that we're seeing
about a nine to millimeters of mercuryreduction blood pressure for most patients. And
then it's also been determined to bevery safe. So the patients that should

(04:06):
be considered for these procedure are thosethat have high blood pressure that is poorly
controlled through diet or in an attemptat medications, or are those people that
are considered to be at high cardiovascarrisk because of their high blood pressure,
those people that are high risk forstroke or kidney failure or heart issues.

(04:30):
And this is so important. It'ssuch a great conversation for us to be
able to have put the Burley.I want to ask you, in your
years as a cardiologist, what hasit been like for you to see personally
the advancements that have been made, especially when it comes to helping individuals light
things like their high blood pressure. This is actually amazing technology. And then
the advancements in time. So theidea for this actually popped up one hundred

(04:51):
years ago. But one hundred yearsago, people used to have to have
their stomachs cut open and then theywould cut these nerves with scalpel. And
so that's where this started back inthe nineteen thirties. And now we're using
modern medical technology. We're able todo this in a non invasive fashion in

(05:12):
less than an hour for people, and we can get these permanent beneficial effects.
It's very very safe and this minimallyinvasive technique. What's such a great
thing to be able to know againthat it now has FDA approval and something
that can definitely give hope to meansof patients, Doctor Burdley that is struggling
when it comes to high blood pressure. Again, everyone, Doctor Berry Bertley

(05:34):
has been our guest gets the cardiologistat the North Mississippi Medical Center talking with
us only about of course the dangersof hypertension of high blood pressure, but
also this great new procedure that's availableto be able to help those dealing with
it, Doctor Burdley, where canour audience go for more information? I
would steer your audience to beyond HBPdot com. So HBP stands for a

(05:56):
high blood pressure, So beyond HVPdot com and we'll make sure that we
linked it up for our audience dotthe Berdolay. Thank you again for the
time. Really appreciate it and forthe great work that you're doing. We
appreciate that as well. Thank youvery much. Thanks for the opportunity do
it, and we thank your audiencefor tuning in to another great segment of
Conversations Live, part of a newzeasand You segment here at WYAD. Until
