with us as well. This is part of a music
and youth segment here at WYD, and today we're talking
(00:23):
about why vision screenings should be at the top of
your back to school checklist. It's back to school season
for all of us now across the country, as parents
shop for new backpacks and clothes and kids prepare to
head back to the classroom. That's one important health item
that you shouldn't leave off your back to school checklist,
and that is the visual health of your child. That's
why we're really excited about our next guest. We have
(00:45):
doctor Kate Jordan joining us today. Doctor Jordan is a
pediatric artomologists in Columbus, Ohio and practices at Pediatric Optomology
Associates and Nationwide Children's Hospital. Doctor Jordan, thank you so
much for the time. Really appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
Thank you so much for having me.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Well, I'm excited about this topic. I don't have any
children on my own, doctor Jordan, but I know in
watching my neighbors in particular, I see some of them,
like myself, wearing glasses, So I notice the topic a
lot of people can relate to. Why are regular vision
screening so important for kids? Dout the Jordan.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
Yeah, so helpful to have regular vision screenings at an
early age to catch vision problems so we can get
them evaluated and treated at an early age. A lot
of times children don't realize is they have vision issues.
They assume that the way they see is how everybody
else sees. If they have a lazy eye, they oftentimes
don't notice that lazy eye because they see well in
(01:37):
one eye and they don't really care about the eye
that they're not seeing well. And children's eyes do grow
and vision changes yearly, so having a yearly vision screening
is a helpful thing to detect problems early.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Yeah, I know that's one of the things that helped
me for sure. So what are a few warning signs
that a child maybe having vision issues that parents should
be able to look up.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Yeah, so it's so important to look for if a
child it is squinting when they're looking at the far
away objects or the TV or the board at school,
or if teachers are noticing that, if they're not reading
at their grade level, if they're holding things really close
like books and tablets, and then if there any eye
misalignment like eye crossing or eye drifting. Sometimes kids will
(02:19):
squint at one eye when they go outside or when
they're reading, they'll cover or close one eye to help
them see better.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Yeah. So when is the best time then of the
year for a child to get an eye exam? I know,
of course, what's back to school in full swing now,
it's a busy time. Is this the best time to
be able to add that to your list?
Speaker 2 (02:38):
This is the best time of year. Schools generally do
vision screenings at the beginning of the year so that
if they get flagged to need a comprehensive eye exam,
they can do that early on and then have success
for the rest of the year if they need glasses
or if they need any other further treatment. Children that
aren't getting vision screens at school can also get vision
(02:59):
screen that wellness fairs with their primary care provider or
through the Alliance Club, which partners with ICARE professionals nationwide
discreen vision and kids.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
That's when I was prepared for the segment. I was
reading about the All Children's CE program. Talk to your
audience about it. Why was it created?
Speaker 2 (03:16):
The Children's I Foundation of a POSTS was launched in
twenty or the Children's I Foundation of a POSTS launched
All Children's C in twenty twenty as the first directation
care program. It connects the US families as a pediatric
ophthalmologists who will provide no cost eye care to children
without insurance or access division care. So this is so
helpful in those kids that just don't have vision insurance
(03:40):
or just don't have medical insurance at this time. And
it does operate in over thirty states and in Washington, DC,
and we're really grateful. We have a generous donation from
the Knights Templar I Foundation of two million dollars for
this program. So it's just been a wonderful addition to
providing I care for kids.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Well, this is a great conversation, definitely needed. Dotor Jordan'slob.

(04:23):
