Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Dan Riley for Sports Talk and Passionate World
Internet Radio. According to reports, the NCAA is going to
share data and logos with sports books for the first
time ever. The money will be used to fund programs
(00:22):
to educate people on the harms of sports betting. Look,
it looks very hypocritical, but the truth is this is
a needed thing. Sports betting is a business that praise
on young people now through advertisements. They need to be
(00:45):
educated on betting scandals and the lives it ruined more
than ever, especially athletes. Look, sports betting is not a
harmless activity. For decades, it funded the mafia in this
country and left innocent people broke and helpless with the
(01:09):
behavioral disorder they had to deal with. In fact, if
any of my listeners are dealing with the betting problem,
go to Birch'shealth dot com. You will find resources to
aid in recovery. In Michigan, go to Don't Regret the
(01:33):
bet dot Org to find resources to help or find
tips to keep your betting from getting out of hand.
The NCAA needs to tell athletes at our colleges about
Art Schleister, the Black Sox, the City College, and New
(01:55):
York scandal in the nineteen fifties and Pete Rose educate
them about the lives betting has ruined and the awful
company it could attract if an athlete is dumb enough
to bet. College athletes are more vulnerable than pro You
(02:18):
can't pay off a debt in college. Being in debt
to a betting app now means being sued or arrested
because you can't pay. Being in debt to an illegal bookmaker,
on the other hand, means you're in debt to criminals.
(02:44):
The NCAA needs to invest as much time and money
as possible in gambling prevention. The NFL does, and other
leagues should follow its example. Gambling doesn't just threaten the
(03:05):
integrity of games. It leaves you in bad company if
you're doing it with an illegal bookmaker, and it frankly
destroys your mental health because you can get addicted to
it long after your playing career is over. Being college
(03:31):
students college athletes risk falling into that crowd. We can
no longer push aside the truth sports betting is not harmless,
especially for athletes, and you can go from the big
(03:58):
man on campus to broke or in jail because you
got involved In this I applaud the NCAA for investing
money in gambling prevention by allowing betting companies to use
their logos, if only for the reason that, while it
(04:23):
looks hypocritical, it's going to help fund the battle against
betting corruption in college sports. This is Dan Riley for
Sports Talk. Thank you so much for tuning in and
