In life, you may have no choice but to use something awful that happened to you to protect others from a similar fate… or worse. Damar Hamlin is a perfect example: he’s using a terrible near-death experience to help pass legislation for kids whose heart health is endangered. It is an ideal example for the rest of us, and a comfort for parents scared for their kids’ safety in school.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Dan Riley for Sports Talk on Passionate World
Internet Radio. Sometimes in sports you have no choice but
to try to apply something you saw in the field
or experienced to real life. Sometimes terrible things happen and

(00:34):
you have to make something good come from it. The
saga of DeMar Hamlin is one example. We all remember
where we were when we heard news that DeMar, a

(00:55):
defensive back for the NFL's Buffalo Bills, was hit had
his heart stop at midfield during a game, and had
to be carted away the hospital. We were all horrified
seeing it, and we were left to wonder if the

(01:23):
NFL would have its first fatality on the field since
Chuck Hughes in the seventies. Luckily, that didn't happen. Thanks
to Damar Hamlin's courage and the expertise of the doctors.

(01:45):
Damar is back playing, but he's not going to stop there.
He recently asked Congress to help fund defibrillators in schools,
which he feels are in very very short supply. Damar

(02:15):
has taken something that happened to him and used it
to make sure someone else doesn't go through the same thing.
Let me give you the background for the Hearts Act.
It's called the Cardiomopathy Health, Education, Awareness, Research and Training

(02:38):
in Schools Act, and President Biden actually plans to sign it.
It's going to help fund education regarding heart health and schools,

(03:00):
as well as help make sure our schools have defibrillators
just in case, God forbid, something awful happens where we
may need to bring a child back from death's doorstep.
In helping apply something terrible that happened to him and

(03:31):
using it to good use, Hamlin has made a good
example for us all in a time where far too
many parents are afraid for their children's safety in school.
Hamlin has done something, and he also showed us the

(03:53):
ultimate example of what you can do when something bad
happens to you. Hopefully others will apply this to their
own life. This is Dan Riley for Sports Talk. Thank
you so much for tuning in and so long
