Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to the Danny Clinkscale Reasonably irreverent podcast, insightful and
witty commentary, probing interviews and detours from the beaten path.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Welcome to Danny and Stan's Football Weekend. I guess technically
it's the first one of those. We did baseball yesterday
because the Chiefs played on Monday night football. We'll talk
to Stan about the Chiefs and they're now two and
three start after a kind of wild, wacky, up and down,
weird loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, which captain football weekend,
(00:38):
which included a split of the two local teams that played,
disappointment for k State at the end once again, and
Kansas getting a very very badly needed victory. I think
they got a lot of help from UCF in that one,
but we'll get Stan's take on that. No matter what,
it was a great win for the Kansas Jayhawks before
a bye week, and Missouri has a big time match
(01:00):
up this week with Alabama, sort of a season defining,
maybe era defining game for Eli Drinkwitz and the Tigers.
A lot of that to talk about, but certainly we're
diving into the Chiefs in depth next as we talk
on Danny and Stan's Football Weekend. It's presented by Advanced
Sports and Family Chiropractic and Acupuncture and we're talking football
(01:24):
with stand Next.
Speaker 1 (01:26):

Oh Danny, this is a really exciting time at the brewery.
We're starting at New Brunt Saturdays and Sundays, starting at

at some of those fancy schmancy places you go to. Okay,
but it's twenty third three Brewery laws. But then, yes,
we've got a waterfall out on their patio. I thought
it was a great patio anyway, but now it's got

Speaker 4 (04:46):
Look forward to working with you.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Welcome back, and I'm gonna sort of leave the slate
clean for you, Stan, because I think it's pretty hard
to explain a lot of the things about the Monday
night football game. I guess I would say that neither
team t was certainly seamless. A lot of mistakes made
in the game, a lot of big mistakes made in
the game. There was some excellence there too, on both sides.
(05:08):
Kind of a weird game.
Speaker 6 (05:11):
Really was, because there is not reason for me to
just throw a lot of negativity towards the Kansas City
Chiefs after watching that game. I don't have that you
give up a touchdown return that was incredible to give
up a touchdown return when you're abow ready to score.
I mean that in the NFL probably makes a giant difference.
(05:32):
I could be considered fourteen points.
Speaker 7 (05:34):
And momentum and all of that.
Speaker 6 (05:36):
But there were other things where you look at the
Jaguars at the inch yard line with the fumble being
knocked out Nick Bolton, great play and knocking it out,
punching a quarterback sneak away.
Speaker 7 (05:46):
It's a great play, but still.
Speaker 6 (05:47):
Could have been a millimeter difference and that would have
been a touchdown for the Jaguars. And then there was
a play that's controversial where the Chiefs got the ball
at about the ten or fifteen yard line after an
interception and scored easily. So it's just hard to point
to one thing and say, oh, that's just unacceptable, because
Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 7 (06:05):
And the offense looked pretty good.
Speaker 6 (06:07):
The offensive line looked as solid as it has in
a long long time. They weren't giving up a lot
of pressures at all. They were able to run the
football decently. Patrick Mahomes again just incredible running the football
and throwing it in the Chiefs defense didn't seem as
if that was awful defense. It just seemed like, right
when Jacksonville needed to make a miraculous play or get
(06:28):
a penalty, it happened at the right time, and it
just kind of continues on and suddenly they have an
interference in the end zone, able to score and they
get a win. Credit Jacksonville a lot. That's where you've
got to start. I mean, Trevor Lawrence, what a wild
experience he is. I mean at times he runs a
ball like Patrick Mahomes. His touchdown run was crazy, but
(06:51):
he had other runs where you're sure he's going to
lose five yards and somehow might have gained seven yards
and just looked like Patrick Mahomes running the football. We
saw a lot of that in this ball game. But
just sitting back there and throwing the football, you couldn't
have said, oh man, I really believe in Trevor Lawrence
until he threw a dime against Cover two on third
and long on that possession that led down to their
(07:11):
last touchdown. I mean, maybe one of the top five
throws all year long. They I mean, the Chiefs defense
was right there. The window is so small to deliver
that ball, and he did it perfectly. So yeah, again,
I'll credit Jacksonville. Anytime you're behind the Cans Sea Chiefs
fourteen to nothing and you come back and find a
way to win, you deserve a lot of credit. In
(07:32):
the NFL, if your record is positive and you're four
and one, you deserve a lot of credit. Okay, this
is in Vanderbilt. You're working through an easy sketchle and
you say, oh, you know it's all going to turn
around when you play the tough SEC teams. It's the NFL.
So I credit Jacksonville. Look at the can and Sea
Chiefs and say, you know, I don't feel that bad
about them, but the losses are piling up. I think
(07:54):
they're still okay to get into gear and make the playoffs.
I'll provide this one. This is one of the most
interesting things to me. There's a group of teams. Are
seven teams like the playoffs in the AFC. As you know,
Danny can I look around and I could say, okay,
I can identify like seven teams right now, and the
Chiefs would be the eighth. So they got to get
to get to work and move up the ladder. And
there's all kinds of opportunities to do it. But what
(08:16):
is really surprising to me, Danny is the fact that
I look at the two and three record and I say,
do you realize the Cancaity Chiefs are two and three
and so are the Cincinnati Bengals. And I could not
have more different thoughts about what I project these teams
to do in the next five plus weeks, Danny, than
Cincinnati and the Chiefs.
Speaker 7 (08:36):
So the record obviously not where you want it.
Speaker 6 (08:39):
And Detroit's next, and that's a heck of a challenge,
maybe as hard a challenge as there is at this
point in the season, as.
Speaker 7 (08:45):
They've come back with Feurer. But look at that.
Speaker 6 (08:47):
I mean, Cincinnati is in big trouble at two and three,
and I think the Chiefs are going to be fine.
But it's amazing that they lost the ballgame. It's amazing.
I mean, you don't want to be too negative too much,
but I just thought a highlight for me was why
was Chris Jones so exhausted? Was Vince Lombardi saying fatigue
(09:07):
makes cowards of us?
Speaker 7 (09:08):
All?
Speaker 6 (09:09):
I mean for him to stand there and not hustle
down the line, and possible I think he might have
got there and put a hit on Trevor Lawrence and
kept him short of the goal line. Your best player
just stood there at the two yard line basically, yep,
and watched the whole thing unfold on that last touchdown run.
That's the hardest one for me to reconcile about. How
do you feel about that? You love Chris Jones, but
(09:31):
how does Andy Reid and the staff handle it? I mean,
he's got a big voice, He's going to be commenting
on everything, and for him to give as little effort
as I've saw in any play this year in the
NFL when the game was on the line, That's probably
the weirdest feeling that I have about the game.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
And afterwards, really not even taking any responsibility for it.
He kept saying we need to do this, we need
to do that, never said I never really referenced the
play in particular, and I mean he did, but he
he didn't say I needed to do better, I needed
to hustle more. I thought he was going to be
down whatever. I thought that was a bad look too.
(10:08):
In addition to the play.
Speaker 6 (10:10):
Yeah, I think so, I do leave a little room
for reality here, Danny. And you know, maybe in defense
of him, if I'm his lawyer or something, or his agent.
Speaker 7 (10:20):
There's a chance that he doesn't realize that he didn't move.
Speaker 6 (10:25):
You don't go back and watch the play seven times
over after you lose game, Danny.
Speaker 7 (10:29):
That's not what the players do.
Speaker 6 (10:29):
Do you understand, Nate, the play occurred, and if you
ask a player what happened, as Patrick Mahomes, he'll probably
be ninety percent correct. You ask other players and they'll say, well,
the guy went around my left side, and he'll be no,
you look at the video. It's not true at all. No,
that was your perception. I just wonder as a play unfolds,
if he doesn't know that he stood there so long
(10:52):
and showed so little effort. He didn't go back at
game's over. I don't think he's going over there looking
at the video. So that's my only hope is that
sometimes when you play lacklusterly and you go back and
look at it, you can't believe it yourself and you
want to beat your head against the wall. Maybe he
just doesn't understand how bad that play was on his behalf.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Let's talk about the game turning play. You mentioned how
much it was worth at that point in time. It
moved the Jags chances of winning the game. From twenty
seven percent to seventy so obviously tremendously significant, but people
might not understand quite how Patrick mahomes to his credit
(11:33):
as opposed to Chris Jones. He just said, well, they
got me there. You know, I didn't recognize the coverage.
They'd never run that coverage on me. And a lot
of fans will probably say, how could he throw the
ball right to the guy who was you know who
went meant for the touchdown? Now, that guy, by the way,
was the defensive player of the Year in the NFL,
of the month the first month of the year in
(11:53):
the NFL, and he made a heck of a read
and dropped into that coverage. But tell us what a
quarterback is seeing there?
Speaker 6 (12:03):
Okay, I want to start with a couple of words
that hopefully will resonate. First of all, you hear about
a zone blitz, and it's a now fifteen years but
you know a fairly modern thing. In his zone blitz
would just mean to a football play that a defensive
lineman who you would always expect to rush if there's
a four man front, actually drops back in coverage.
Speaker 7 (12:27):
You see Chris Jones do that once? All right?
Speaker 6 (12:28):
They drop back in coverage and maybe you send a
linebacker somewhere and you really haven't sent more than four people.
Speaker 7 (12:35):
You just change up who they are right now.
Speaker 6 (12:37):
You could do this with blitzes and go to the
nth degree, but basically, all the mindset is here Danny
is the equivalent of his own blitz is that when
the ball snapped, you can't see everything. You get certain
keys that you read. But one thing that almost every
quarterback would believe in that situation is the four defensive
linemen who lined up close to.
Speaker 7 (12:58):
The line of scrimmage are going to be rushing okay.
Speaker 6 (13:00):
And if they deviate from that, it's something that you
have to notice, and it would be a curveball to
your brain. Now, he's a linebacker, so you're going, we'll
stand he's a linebacker, he's not a defensive lineman.
Speaker 7 (13:11):
What the heck are you talking about?
Speaker 6 (13:13):
But what he did in that situation was run to
the line of scrimmage and almost engage the Chiefs offensive lineman.
So Patrick saw him flash. And in a goal line
situation like that, it's very normal for them to fill
the gaps quickly.
Speaker 7 (13:28):
You can't just stand around in the end.
Speaker 6 (13:30):
Zone and say, oh, I wonder if Kareem Hunt's running
the ball, now you've got to go. And when he went,
the four defensive linemen are rushing, but he's taking up
one of the gaps near the guard. He committed to
take that gap, and Patrick Mahomes's brain immediately wrote him
off as if he was just another lineman, completely wrote
(13:50):
him off, thinking that guy's fighting to get to me
and never thought about him dropping.
Speaker 7 (13:56):
So all the reads that he.
Speaker 6 (13:57):
Had back there where he's looking at the safety, where's
the corner, where's my receivers?
Speaker 7 (14:02):
And obviously he doesn't want to.
Speaker 6 (14:04):
Throw the ball into the end zone to a receiver
he thinks is going to hit the stride if there's
another robber sitting there.
Speaker 7 (14:09):
So Patrick's looking ahead of where the receiver's going.
Speaker 6 (14:12):
He's looking at what's happening, and he pulls the trigger
and goes boom. We have run a little mesh play,
not necessarily a pick, and my guy is wide open
and I'm gonna stick it on him right now at
the goal line. You'll step in the end zone and
we have a touchdown. He never thought about this guy
dropping back. It's almost like a defensive tackle dropped back.
(14:35):
But a defensive tackle probably would have had the ball
hit him in the chest and follow the ground right.
This guy's a linebacker who caught it, so he disguised himself,
almost took his zero number, and it's almost like he
had a seventy four on because Patrick rode him off
like you are not in pass coverage and then ended
up throwing it right on him. Now what Patrick said
(14:56):
about you know they haven't done that before.
Speaker 7 (14:58):
You know, that may be a great explanation. It usually
is by Patrick that in.
Speaker 6 (15:01):
Goal line situation, when that guy's come, he's never dropped
back off right and he got me. So it's really
the equivalent to his own blitz. A quarterback starts making
a lot of assumptions. There are certain things, you know,
they always talk about. Romo's always telling you, hey, they
put a guy in motion. If someone chases across the
formation with him, you know it's Manda man or a
decent amount of Manda man if it's a combo coverage.
(15:23):
Those kind of indicators are flashing through a quarterback's mind
and going to step one, two, three, four five about
what the logic is. And so when that guy came forward,
he goes Lloyd is done. He's rushing me, and then
he popped back in like a ghost, like uh oh,
I did not see that, and stuck the ball right
on him. Great play and one of the greatest returns
(15:44):
I've ever seen, because when Patrick Mahomes through that interception,
like the greatest quarterbacks that I've ever known, Danny, they
made it their personal responsibility go make the tackle right
and Patrick Mahons showed up fast like a linebacker, and
you go, okay, he's gonna drag him down to the
fifteen yard line. He's totally upset about the interception, and
then he kind of falls and doesn't get him and
(16:05):
it just continues all the way to the almost punch out.
How about Thornton hustling down the field even after getting blocked.
It was incredible, and he punched at the ball just
like he should. I mean, it took every bit of
you know, that's one hundred plus sideways you know about
what one hundred and twenty yard run after the interception.
That he did everything flawlessly, and so did the guys
around him. Just an incredible play by the Jaguars.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
In the end, there's a lot of good things for
the Chiefs as you mentioned, but they had twelve penalties.
They looked like legit penalties. The past interference certainly was,
and then other little mistakes not so littlely then, like
Harrison Bucker is having a bad season, there's no other
way to put it, and he kicks the ball out
of bounds and gives him the forty yard line. There
(16:49):
was just too much.
Speaker 7 (16:49):
Of that, yeah, at wrong time.
Speaker 6 (16:53):
You know, the passing interference is third and thirteen to
twelve at the thirteen yard line, or third and thirteen.
Speaker 7 (16:59):
At the fourteen. You know, I play my board game
of Danny.
Speaker 6 (17:02):
Every one of the guys who plays are like, oh
my gosh, the defense has such an advantage here. The
offense has got too far to go and the field's
too squeezed. Just almost no way it's gonna work. And
then they get a good pass rusher on Trevor and
he throws it up and you get a pass interference.
You know, I hate those passing inferences where the defender
runs and doesn't stop in time. But it was he
(17:23):
grabbed his arm, so you know, get out of jail
free right there to the kickoff out of bounds.
Speaker 7 (17:28):
A couple things happened with that Danny.
Speaker 6 (17:31):
When Bucker kicked that football out of bounds, you get
the ball at to forty and you also don't run
any clock, right because if you keep the ball in play,
you know, he grasps it the five or ten. You
know the story the new kickoff, you're used to it. Yeah,
at to five or ten, he heads out. Maybe he
makes it to the thirty. Generally they make it to
about the twenty eight to thirty yard line that's instead
of the forty, So that's a dozen yards and they
(17:53):
run off what six seven ten seconds off the clock
to make it a little bit harder on a jaguar.
So yeah, that was for Bucker to do. That was
a giant heir. It's almost like scoring with fifty seconds
left in the game and then missing your first pat
in about four weeks and and you're behind by one
instead of tying the game. You know, that's it seems like.
(18:15):
That is how big a play it was. And again,
great discipline by the Jacksonville player, because how many times
have I seen the NFL players not let it bounce
even though the momentum is going to the sideline, they
don't have the guts to say. I think it's going
to roll out of bounds. That guy had a lot
of patients and said I'm gonna wait, wait, wait, and
sure enough he gets the ball at the forty yard line.
So a big starting position, a big point in the
(18:38):
game as well, because they need a touchdown not a
field goal.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
Let's talk about the Lions now. Most people think that
they probably are playing the best football in the league.
Philadelphia's offense hasn't been great, so the lines have stepped up.
They've had one hiccup. There are no undefeated teams left
in the National Football League, but the Lions look like
that'll be a big challenge. And the Chiefs better beyond
point penalties and little mistakes, are not going to get
(19:02):
it done against the Lions.
Speaker 6 (19:04):
No, not at all, and the Lions will be super excited.
Speaker 7 (19:08):
They're still in the developmental stage.
Speaker 6 (19:11):
These teams like Buffalo, Cincinnati and Detroit have got this
window from being bad to good to racing up to
the top of the league. Danny, And if you don't
actually grab that Lombardi Trophy, a lot of times your
time goes away, and Cincinnati's time might have gone away,
right It may be over when they were really good
(19:35):
and knocking on a door. We know Buffalo had that
four year stretch it's historic in the early nineties, or
they didn't win the Super Bowl. You know, is this
Josh Allen team ever going to win a super Bowl?
It looks like they're still relevant right now. But Detroit,
I would say, has been in the cycle long enough.
This is year three of good Detroit Danny, so they
better be careful. But I happen to believe when I'm
(19:57):
speaking to you that I think they still have excitement
level of an early team up and coming right, you know,
not down on themselves when things go well. Don't feel
like their failures. If they don't win this game, like
they got beat up and just it looked awful. When
they started a season against Green Bay, You're going, what happened?
You know these what happened?
Speaker 4 (20:17):
Look at the.
Speaker 6 (20:17):
Baltimore Ravens the last couple of weeks. But they bounced
right back, and I don't think they've lost their youthful enthusiasm,
if that makes sense. I think Dan Campbell's not Yeah,
he's a veteran coach in time, but I think he's
like still an up and comer, excited about the opportunity
to be put in the same sentence with the best
in the league and not saying everything to lose and
(20:39):
nothing to gain. I think they play like there's a
lots of gain, and therefore I think they're super dangerous.
I think they're super dangerous, Dannie. I think they will
play with passion. They have all the answers. Their running backs,
he got two running backs.
Speaker 7 (20:52):
They are elite. The quarterback Jared Goff.
Speaker 6 (20:55):
I can't say enough good things about how this guy
has bounced back and playing at a high level. And
we start listening our top ten quarterbacks or maybe even
top five, you start bringing his name in. He's running
the offense very very well. And the defense. It's nice
to have Aiden Hutchinson back. You know, he's the best
defensive player, and they lost him for much of last year.
So now you've got that pass rushing effect. And you know,
(21:18):
maybe there's some coordinator changes. You know, there's coordinators that
were with Detroit last year are not there this year.
But I have not seen a big fall off. That
first game is kind of overreaction time. So yeah, this
game's very dangerous. And the fact that as far as
winning or losing, I still god I might be the
most naive guy in the world, Danny. But I think
if the Chiefs lose to Detroit, they still can make
(21:40):
it back into the playoffs and even maybe win the division.
I still look him as likely the best team in
the division even with a loss to Detroit. But you've
got to have your concern level skyrocketing. You've got to
be nervous and excited and say must win and those
kind of things when this game is being played. And
if you're an Arrowhead and you're a fan, you know
to yell loud and rock the place and just will
(22:03):
your team to a victory. Chiefs can match up fine
with Detroit, but man, this is gonna be hard. This
team's a lot better than Jacksonville. Let's just say that.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
We'll talk college football. Coming up next with Stan Weber.
It's Danny and Stan's Football Weekend Tuesday Style presented by ASFCA.

Welcome back too. Games one bye and a split decision.
As far as the locals are concerned, let's start with
I think it's at this time of year, it's probably
always the bigger story maybe when one team loses. So
we'll start with Kansas State because they are in a
bit of a pickle now at one and two, two
and four. They seem to have gotten things fixed. It's
not like they played badly against Baylor, but the sequencing
(24:25):
of the game, the failure to get in on first
and goal from the two at the end, the little
things towards the end of a game that have not
gone the Cat's way. Avery Johnson was good once again
in this game. There were some good things to talk about,
but Baylor looks like they're a good, solid football team
and they squeeze it out on a late long field goal.
Speaker 6 (24:45):
Yeah, there's so many different views you could take on
this and it is so unfair to ever mention Patrick
Mahomes's name with anybody else in the world. You know,
But after watching case State on Saturday and the Chiefs
on Monday, I'm sitting there going and Avery Johnson put
together a really good game. He rushed with purpose. First
drive of the game, they score a touchdown. He goes
(25:06):
thirty one yards with his speed untouched, one yard from
his longest run of his career longest run. This year,
case State's up seven and nothing. He throws for career
highs of twenty nine completions, forty five attempts, three hundred
and forty four yards, two touchdowns, a rushing touchdown seventy
two yards Danny. That's four hundred and sixteen yards of
(25:28):
total offense. It's been way back in the early teams,
or maybe before that KSE State has had someone with
four hundred and sixteen yards of total offense. Jake Waters
in two thousand and fourteen had four hundred and thirteen.
Speaker 7 (25:43):
So you'll go further back. So here you go, go, Hey, man,
look what Avery did.
Speaker 6 (25:46):
You really like what he did except for he threw
a pick six Danny, and it was just an unbelievable
interception in return.
Speaker 7 (25:53):
Does that sound like.
Speaker 6 (25:53):
Patrick Mahomes a little bit? Yeah, he played so good,
but how do you erase that return for touchdown? So,
you know, Case they did a lot of things well
fully expected, Danny.
Speaker 7 (26:04):
You know, we talked about this game.
Speaker 6 (26:05):
I think we nailed it that Baylor is a high
scoring team, but their defense is suspect. Case State's going
to have to be ready to score more than they
have this year and get ready for those games in
the thirties and you know, pressing toward forty and that's
exactly what we ended up with in a super close game.
And everything like that is much predicted. But the pain,
the pain, Danny, is when you look in the mirror
(26:27):
and you say, Case State led by fourteen points and
had the football in the fourth quarter, fourteen point lead,
and the football in your hands after a fourth down stop.
That's when the pain becomes big because you say, I
can't create any scenario that you're going to lose a
game like that, and it haunts KSE State like Houston
(26:48):
did last year. Houston's not nearly as good as Baylor,
but Houston was down by ten, which is almost like
twenty with Houston last year under Willie Fritz in case
State had the football up by ten and lost that game.
So it's that kind of reminder, A big blow to
KSE eight, no.
Speaker 7 (27:05):
Doubt about it.
Speaker 6 (27:06):
Truly thought it would go right down to the wire
and that either team could win.
Speaker 7 (27:09):
It'd be super close. It all ended up that way.
Speaker 6 (27:11):
But the fact that KATE loses a close game that
they played well enough in to win is disappointing. And
while we credit Jacksonville, I think you're probably on board
with me when I said, you know, some of those
plays Jacksonville made are really really good plays. When KSE
was up by fourteen and didn't move the ball and
(27:32):
punted back to.
Speaker 7 (27:32):
Baylor, You're still fine.
Speaker 6 (27:34):
You're up by fourteen, it's thirty one to seventeen, and
then this tied end. Michael Treege just goes off on
plays that well. You can't ever get mad at the
k State defenders. Michael Trieg is a fifth year senior
who is six four two forty and a receiver type,
and he goes up on the first play. They just
throw it up to him and say, hey, what's going
(27:55):
to happen, and he snags the ball out of the
air above the k State defender for forty two yards.
They go back to him on the next play, and
it's Sports Center's top play of the day on a
college football Saturday, Danny with major League baseball games, the
best play in the whole country or maybe world, is
him running down field along the left sideline, reaching his
(28:18):
left hand up with a defender right there and snagging
the ball with one hand, never touched it with the
other hand. They went back and reviewed it because they're like,
did he have complete control? Did he have his feet
in bounds? So he goes forty two twenty nine. In
the next plays eleven yard touchdown pass case a was
in good shape and boom they then they go analytically
(28:40):
for two and.
Speaker 7 (28:41):
Pull within six. So that's how quick it turned around.
Speaker 6 (28:44):
It's hard to be mad at the k State defense
on any of those three plays that brought Baylor back.
Then you get an unbelievable throw over the middle, over
the middle, dating not to the outside, gets picked six,
and because they went for two, you're down by one
and in shock case and the very next play had
a forty one yard pass and said we're fine, We're
gonna go back and get it. But unfortunately, you know
(29:06):
how much red zone football's winning football or not. Case
State snapped the ball inside the five three times on
that possession Danny and couldn't make a touchdown. They kicked
the field goal and ended up losing on a fifty
three yard field goal with the other direction.
Speaker 7 (29:21):
So if you would have.
Speaker 6 (29:22):
Scored a touchdown down there with three snaps inside the five,
you're saying you're a winner. But that's what we know.
The NFL is like in KSE State's experience. That now
four losses Danny already this year by seven points or less.
It's a stat that I track really really closely, and
four ties the most that I've seen in a long
(29:43):
long time.
Speaker 9 (29:44):
I'm going to have to go back to my research
and see if KSE State's ever lost more than four
games by seven points or less in a season worth
the halfway mark, and they've already got four in that
bad column.
Speaker 2 (29:56):
Well, they have to get back on the horse. And
they obviously play against TCU this week. What do you
see in the horn Frogs and what kind of game
do you expect?
Speaker 6 (30:07):
Well, it's gonna be a little bit like Baylor. It's
just that TCU's defense is not quite as poor as Baylor's,
so they'll play better defense. But the games in Manhattan,
so that kind of didn't sit back out. So replicating
what I saw last week is what I expect because
TCU has such a good quarterback, you know, a veteran quarterback,
(30:28):
and we saw Sawyer Robertson really leading the country in
touchdowns and passing yards last week. But Josh Hoover is
a really good quarterback. So TCU is good. But it's
weird that they're not like they're not beatable. I mean,
they're gonna be there and play a close game. They
could have should have lost to Colorado last week. Who's
(30:51):
jumping up and down Danny around your world saying that
Deon Sanders, Colorado's team's a great team this year.
Speaker 7 (30:56):
I don't think so.
Speaker 6 (30:57):
No, the Colorado played with them every down of the game,
and TCU the score don't get to score. TCU scored
on a fourth down play to score a touchdown to
make it look better. It was a dead even game.
So I'm not scared of TCU. But with Hoover throwing
the football and the TCU football team that they have
this year, I fully expect this game to be another
(31:18):
super close game, right down to the wire.
Speaker 2 (31:21):
We'll see how it goes. The Kansas Jayhawks win a
close one at UCF, I'll say it out loud, it's
probably unfair. I think UCF lost this game as much
as Kansas won it. I can't even describe the lack
of creativity on the four plays down by the goal
line when UCF's trying to punch it in to tie
(31:41):
the game. But the Jayhawks did some things well too
in this game. Kind of a strange game, scoreless fourth quarter,
Jayhawks get a win. They badly need it and in
the end that's all that matters.
Speaker 6 (31:51):
Yeah. You know there's a guy who talks about the competition, Danny.
I think his name's Bill Self. That brings up you know,
sometimes you got to just put to the other team
in the position and let them make mistakes and lose
the game.
Speaker 7 (32:04):
Now, maybe it wasn't Bill Self.
Speaker 6 (32:06):
You can correct me if I'm wrong about that, right,
You know, that's part of athletics, and man UCF played
the role. I mean they act like when it was
raining that there were seventeen defenders for KU out there
that they've never seen rain before. In Orlando, Florida Tavian Jackson,
the quarterback who could make things happen, and they scored
on their first four possessions of the game and really
(32:28):
did a good job and was attacking the Kansas defense.
Speaker 7 (32:31):
When he got rushed, he just dropped the ball before he.
Speaker 6 (32:34):
Even got hit and then laid on the ground and
cried like he'd been killed. I mean, you like what.
And then cam Fanter came in and he was a
starter and he'd do one good thing and three things
bad and you know, yeah, but okay, you played with passion, Danny.
That defense looked different. They deserve a ton of credit.
They were down fourteen to nothing against a super dangerous
(32:54):
team coming off that Cincinnati lost. They were damaged psychologically,
like this was a hard, hard game and now everything's
going wrong and we're behind, and they just set their
jaw and played great and shut out UCF in the
second half. So you and I can sit back. Hey,
if we were in New York or in California breaking
(33:15):
down this game, we absolutely could talk about the things
UCF didn't do. The play calling by Scott Frost, I mean,
it was it was not good enough a lot.
Speaker 2 (33:26):
It's like Scott Frost thought he was still playing at
Nebraska and all they had to do was hand the
ball off and surely we'll score with four drives from here. Yeah,
I mean, come on, and.
Speaker 6 (33:37):
The feeble peaching for the goal line and fumbling and no,
it was UCF was very unimpressive. But I think, you know,
like a bill selfism, Kansas put game pressure on them, right,
and they did not respond. You know, you walk away
thinking a lot worse of UCF. I'm not talking about
Kansas at all right now, just well, what I thought
(33:57):
about UCF three weeks ago. They were undefeated under Scott Frost.
They have some talent. Where I think they are now
is they've fallen off the end of the cliff. I mean,
it's back to, oh my gosh, you're playing a big
twelve teams. Things aren't going to go well, kind of
like they found out last year. At some point Kansas
broke them. But from KU's perspective, we're not in New York,
we're not in LA We're right here. I don't care
(34:18):
how you win, Danny. That was a must win. That
was a must win because you do not want to
create the negativity of this three game stretch that.
Speaker 7 (34:27):
I loved right.
Speaker 6 (34:27):
I mean, I was saying, who wouldn't trade with Kansas Tech,
West Virginia Home, Cincinnati at home, and UCF. Well, unfortunately
Kansas didn't realize how good Cincinnati was because they went
and won against Iowa State, so impressive. But Kansas could
have easily won again Cincinnati. We know that they go
win at UCF. But man, now you got at Texas
Tech coming up. You could not afford a three game
(34:50):
losing streak here. That was a complete surprise. Now you
become dangerous, like, what the heck, we have nothing to lose.
Speaker 7 (34:57):
Texas Tech has blown out everybody, Nanny.
Speaker 6 (35:01):
And he'd go, oh my gosh, that makes it so hard,
you know it doesn't you realize they really haven't had
any adversity. The most points in anybody's scored against them
this year is fourteen. Okay, but that's Oregon State, Kent State.
I know they took care of Utah, but how good
is Utah? Their fewest points they scored was at Utah.
(35:21):
That was an impressive win thirty four to ten. But
they really haven't played anybody yet. And for them to
just prance around and say, look at our stats, you know,
We're the best offense in the country. We're one of
the best defenses in the country, and all these things
they may find.
Speaker 7 (35:38):
Okay, they may find.
Speaker 6 (35:39):
Like I talked about Cincinnati coming, I said with you, Danny,
I call his game day and on your podcast.
Speaker 7 (35:44):
I thought that game would be close. I really did.
Speaker 6 (35:46):
I didn't say, okay, you will win. But still generally
I thought Kay was the better team at home. Right now,
who doesn't say generally Texas Tech is better than Kansas.
But they may find out that Kansas plays the role
of Cincinnati KU. I mean, Kansas is gonna be hard
to deal with now if they got a breath of
fresh air a win on the road. If Texas Tech
(36:07):
just thinks this is going to be easy, the name
of it might run into problems. So this is all
about Texas Tech because I think Kansas will play out
of their mind. It'd be so excited and they can score.
And you better be able to score to be Texas Tech.
And guess what Kansas can and they can get in
the shootout. So this week everything to gain, nothing to lose.
Speaker 7 (36:25):
Last week was a danger zone game, and KU found
a way to win. They did.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
Indeed, that was the good news in the college ranks.
And we'll check out that one. That's an evening game
on Fox. It's the feature game on Fox. It should
be an exciting game, and Kansas hopes it's exciting because
they I think if one team's going to win handily,
it would be Texas Tech. Stan always a pleasure talking
football with you, and we'll talk to you again on
Saturday and Sports Radio E ten And have yourself a
(36:52):
