Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to the Danny Clinkscale Reasonably irreverent podcast, insightful and
witty commentary, probing interviews and detours from the beaten path.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Welcome to Danny and s Dan's football weekend. And it
certainly was a productive weekend for the two local teams
that actually did play. That was the Kansas City Chiefs
and the Missouri Tigers. Chiefs went old school. They looked
like the team from I don't know, four years ago,
the team that you expected to win, the team that
made the games look so easy. And the Raiders certainly

(00:38):
helped out by completely capitulating in the game thirty one
to nothing could have been worse in the NFL. When
your backup quarterback plays almost a full quarter, you know
that it's a complete wipeout, and it was. And the
Chiefs look in good position. Only the Broncos are ahead
of them now and they need miracles to win. So
we'll talk about that. And of course in college football,

(00:58):
it was Missouri getting a win that I said, no
matter how it was, I was going to be impressed
because that's a tough place to play. Auburn knows how
to lose. That helped, and Missouri gets out with an
overtime win. The beat goes on next week as they
take on Vanderbilt on the road, and it is a
tough schedule down the stretch, so that made it even

(01:18):
more important to pull out the overtime win for the Tigers.
And of course, looming right ahead after a bye week
for both teams is a Sunflower showdown between Kansas and
Kansas State and a very important season defining game for
both teams. Will have to do some heavy lifting post
loss in this one to have themselves a successful season.

(01:39):
All that's on the line, along with a few other
football notes and amusings as well. It's Danny and Stan's

forward to working with you. Welcome back, Stan. It's going

(05:19):
to be a pretty easy one to break down. I
guess the Chiefs go old school. It looked like the
days when you were amazed that other teams could actually
stop the Chiefs. Chiefs were having so much fun that
I thought they got a little sloppy at times. But
even with that, it was just an absolute cruise from
pretty much start to finish. Twenty one to nothing at

(05:40):
the half, scored to start the second half, and the
Raiders didn't really put up much fight once they got
behind in this game, seeming to realize that this was
going to be an impossible task on the day.

Speaker 4 (05:50):
So easy work for the.

Speaker 7 (05:52):
Chiefs, really easy work when it's all said and done.

Speaker 5 (05:56):
That's not true at the start of the game, Danny.

Speaker 7 (05:58):
Noon kickoff a little bit of a difference for the
Keyna City Chiefs. Maybe harder on a West Coast team,
ish as Vegas a West coast team.

Speaker 5 (06:06):
I want to call them the Raiders and think of
it as California. Okay, Danny, you.

Speaker 7 (06:10):
Know, getting you know, getting a noon kickoff for them
is pretty hard work. Historically it's been tough for teams
to go east. But this could be a feisty game.
It's division foes, it's a rivalry game. Pete Carroll's a
new head coach. Why wouldn't the Raiders just give it
a good try, and they got a rookie running back
that they believe in, and Gente, you can hand the

(06:32):
ball off and use that as a formula to shortened
the game. Those things are all true. At the start
of the game, Danny, and maybe even after the first amazing,
incredible long Chief drive, Pete Carroll I think was saying, hey,
we put them in a bad field position. They're probably
gonna punt here in a little bit and we'll be
down by only one score.

Speaker 5 (06:51):
And they did it again.

Speaker 7 (06:52):
And the Chiefs took bad field position three straight times
and just drove it down for a touchdown like it
was easy, using all the repertoire that they had.

Speaker 5 (07:01):
Everyone's want to talk about Rashee Rice only, but it
wasn't just Rashee Rice.

Speaker 7 (07:05):
How about Hollywood Brown and Xavier Worthy and how about
Travis Kelsey. He's putting some games together now, Danny in
a row where he looks more and more like a
rejuvenated old self.

Speaker 5 (07:16):
But Patrick Mahomes was killing it.

Speaker 7 (07:18):
The defense was great, and at the end of the day,
when you said old school, it really almost is a disappointment.
I often say that the most enjoyable thing in sports
is to sit down and watch a Chiefs game.

Speaker 5 (07:29):
I mean, those three hours are poetry in motion.

Speaker 7 (07:32):
Not only because we follow them here or we liked
him here, Danny, I'm talking about any NFL fan. You
just never know what's going to happen on any particular play.
And no look past an incredible Chris Jones sack.

Speaker 5 (07:44):
You just don't know. The Blitz is the chief Spring.

Speaker 7 (07:47):
It's exciting all the time, and somehow the games usually
end up being close, which gives the opponents some hope
and makes you respect. Oh, maybe the Chiefs won't win
this game, and well that'll be a big deal.

Speaker 5 (07:58):
Man.

Speaker 7 (07:58):
This was truly old school, Okay when I started studying
the NFL intently, Danny, when good teams played bad teams,
they ripped them apart and gave you no hope. And
Pete Roselle, the old commissioner of the NFL who wanted Pard,
he's like the Super Bowl team playing another decent team
and it's just a blood letting, no doubt about it.
And so in that respect, loves what the Chiefs did.

(08:21):
Really put explanation point on what I've been pointing out
with you, Danny for multiple weeks now. That I think
the NFL's wide open. There aren't super Bowl level teams
that have the quarterback to coach the history. There's no
one out there that I point to and say I
trust them to go win the Super Bowl. And I
was starting to trust the Chiefs enough to go why

(08:42):
not the Chiefs?

Speaker 5 (08:43):
Well, now everybody's saying it right.

Speaker 7 (08:45):
It says if the dumbest thing in the world is
for me to say, why aren't the Chiefs the best
team in football? Maybe the Eagles can rise up at
some point and say we're used to this and be
there at the end.

Speaker 5 (08:56):
I'm not going to write them off.

Speaker 7 (08:57):
But you know, you got to look at the Indianapolis
Colts and say, when you win games in the NFL, Nanny,
you win games.

Speaker 5 (09:03):
In the NFL, you deserve credit.

Speaker 7 (09:04):
Doesn't matter what the reputation was at the beginning of
the year or Daniel Jones. You know, other than the Colts,
the Chiefs look like the best team in the National
Football League. And the offense that they're playing with right
now is incredible. And Patrick Mahomes is just dealing out there,
and Andy Reid seems like he's back to tricking the
opponent with cute plays, funny plays, cussword plays, whatever it is.

(09:30):
The Chiefs look like they're in complete control. It reminds
me of the late teens and early twenties.

Speaker 5 (09:36):
When Tyreek Hill was.

Speaker 7 (09:37):
Running around and Travis Kelsey was young, and they were
just dogging people, you know, and you just had to
hope the Chiefs defense wasn't good enough. Well, the Chiefs
defense is the lead card. But now the offense is
on fire and so much fun to watch.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
It is fun to watch, and you know, we could
just sit here and throw bouquets the whole time, and
they deserved it after this game, but I'll say this,
Oh NFL team should go out and get three first downs.
I don't care who they're playing against. That, I mean,
that's just unacceptable. And I didn't think from the time
that there was a scramble like in the second quarter
and Gino Smith, to me, could have made the first

(10:13):
down with a little bit of extra effort and got
his team, you know, fired up, maybe, and he just
capitulated late on the ground. Its signaled to me. Then
there was a run by Pacheco where everybody was just
sort of slapping him on the back as he plowed
for twelve yards. I thought it was an embarrassing effort
by the Raiders.

Speaker 5 (10:31):
You know that's fair.

Speaker 7 (10:32):
Gino Smith looked completely checked out. Yeah, I called him
out in twenty twelve. Danny as a guy. If you
punched him in the gut.

Speaker 5 (10:40):
He'll fold. One of the best predictions I ever had.
My buddies couldn't believe it.

Speaker 7 (10:44):
I was on with you and Kevin between the lines
of four o'clock segment on Sports Radio eight ten WHB,
and I was calling out this unbelievable Top twenty ballgame
with k State going.

Speaker 5 (10:56):
To West Virginia, and I said, K State's going to win.
Kse is to win.

Speaker 7 (11:00):
Colin Klein is going to take care of West Virginia's defense.

Speaker 5 (11:04):
And I do not believe in Gino Smith.

Speaker 7 (11:06):
That's the version that we saw right here. He has
changed my idea about him as a pro quarterback. The
way he played at Seattle was legitimate, you know, and
give him all the credit in the world for still
being an NFL player, But he looked completely overwhelmed or disinterested.

Speaker 5 (11:23):
In the ball game.

Speaker 7 (11:24):
I will say this, Okay, Danny, You're one of the
most fair guys in the world. So your podcast is
the one place we can say that did the ball
just bounce perfectly for the Chiefs?

Speaker 2 (11:34):
My god, my homes could have had I don't know,
four or five interceptions.

Speaker 5 (11:40):
Yeah, if he would have got either.

Speaker 2 (11:41):
One to Probably not though, because a couple of them
were in the same drive.

Speaker 5 (11:45):
But I mean, you know, in the same drive twice.

Speaker 7 (11:48):
If the guy would have nabbed it, you know, then
it probably would have been a pick six, right, and
the score would have been I don't know, fourteen to
seven instead of you know, you know, one of those things.
So at the game they were fourteen to seven, maybe
the Raiders would have woke up. But then they had
a legitimate fumble, a legitimate defensive play ripped the ball

(12:08):
out and it looked like a ground ball to the shortstop.
And here's Exebruary the same thank you, yep, and just
the announcers had trouble even knowing there was a fumble. Danny,
he went bounced perfectly safely to another Chiefs player. And
then I just started shaking my head, going oh by.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
And I think the Raiders. I think the Raiders shook
their head too. I think that's what happened. I think
after a couple of those bounces went against them. They're
like nat not today.

Speaker 7 (12:34):
Yeah, so I'm saying they gave up. I'm going to
give you that, Danny embarrassing. I'll give you that less
than one hundred yards thirty plays. Geno Smith deserves to
be called out right from the start because he needed to.
You know, they got the football first, and they needed
to get going and get downfield and get a field
goal and set the tone. You got to score when
you're in Arrowhead playing the Kansasity Chiefs. Okay, and he

(12:56):
just didn't seem like he was on target or interested
in scrambling or you know all those things. But as
far as a team, when they're you know, star defensive
end walks to the sideline, he's a warrior, right, He's
none for playing every down he's on the sideline hurt
and the ball is not bouncing their way at some point,
what late second quarter, then I'm jumping on board with you.

(13:18):
Embarrassing from that point, but until the balls are bouncing
against so I thought they were trying.

Speaker 5 (13:23):
Chiefs are just so good. The Chiefs really are.

Speaker 7 (13:26):
Good, and they're they're revived, they're having fun. Last year
was a burden on them, Danny, because they were just
trying not to lose. Okay, they were going to go
back and try to threepeat.

Speaker 5 (13:37):
They were going to go back as the best team
in football. Everyone knew it. And they never played to win.

Speaker 7 (13:43):
They just played to survive and then the good things
would happen. And it was it was hard right now
after they hit rock bottom of we lost two games,
they now are having a lot of fun running through
the pack and going we're super Bowl favorites. We're only
four and three. We got a lot to play for.
We're just having fun. Let's see if we can get
back in the playoff race. We might not even win

(14:04):
our division. Man, that's a perfect, perfect setup for a
team to play great, Danny, when Andy Reid's up there
and they actually do have to play with the sets
of urgency in every game. Really they have to win.
They can't mess around. And that's perfect because they're not
Prima Donna's sitting on top of an undefeated season and
saying we're going to our fourth straight super Bowl. They

(14:25):
know they got to work, in fact, with the weird
tiebreakers only because of a tiebreaker, Danny, not the lost column,
but in a tiebreaker world. It doesn't matter today. The
Chiefs actually would not be one of the seven playoff
teams from the AFC at wes the AFC today, So
isn't that perfect to lead with when the players come
in on Wednesday?

Speaker 5 (14:42):
Hey guys, we got to get the work.

Speaker 7 (14:45):
We're the third place team in our division by tiebreaker rules.

Speaker 5 (14:49):
So let's get the work. They're really playing great football
and the defense is still good. But man, we spoke
about I think it was not with you, Danny, but
with you with the weapons, and she's had right.

Speaker 7 (15:03):
I mean, you're talking about the fifth and sixth options
are legitimate, good, scary NFL players and that's what they
have at their beck and call. Now in the passing game,
and isn't Andy Reid brilliant? Like do you really believe
in the runners? Okay, Pacheco will look good here and there, Danny,
but the running game is a weakness in my mind?

(15:23):
How many times do they pass the ball down the
line and substitute the passing game for the running game.
Now you're talking about Andy Reid football. You want to
play cover two, you want to play your safeties back,
We'll throw the ball down the line and just make
you pay for it with these great receivers, or for
Shard Smith, who is really a receiver, only played running

(15:43):
back for one year his senior year at SMU.

Speaker 5 (15:47):
How comfortable is he catching the ball? Danny?

Speaker 7 (15:49):
I mean the fish in water Man. He's the perfect
player for Andy Reid's offense.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
Well, the only thing I would do when I was
when I come in on Wednesday for film, like you
said said, is they were having so much fun. I
thought that they they knew they were going to win
the game. And I thought Mahomes was at the lead
of this pack. He was doing things he shouldn't do,
and if he does it in a game that the
other teams, you know, engaged and good. Now they're playing

(16:17):
the Commanders this week, and they got absolutely whitewashed by
the Cowboys and looked terrible on defense. So it may
be a party again for the Chiefs. But I just think, hey, guys,
we had fun. It was the Raiders. Let's get back
on point.

Speaker 5 (16:31):
No.

Speaker 7 (16:32):
I can see that, Danny, But you know, joy was
something that was missing right for a little while. And
so I think the leaders of the team are really
trying to yank everybody into that mindset that we used
to be scary fun as well as scary good, because
you know, they had grown up to be a.

Speaker 5 (16:52):
Pretty businesslike team when you get right down to it.

Speaker 7 (16:55):
All those defensive players like Karlafiatis and you know, the
guys who'd been in a Super Bowl every year of
their career. These guys, these defensive players led by Bolton,
they're all business. You know, they're not flashing dash. They
come out and they go to work. And I think
they've learned that over the last three years now into
year four of saying, you know, we're business like and
all that. And I think there's a part of Patrick

(17:17):
Mahomes and Travis Kelcey and Kelsey's got to do it
on the field. It can't just be Taylor swift Is.
It's okay, he's got to play great on the field
before he can start having fun and the players follow him.
But he's done it now in this last little run.
And I think Patrick's probably overemphasizing, Hey, you don't realize
how much fun we used to have basketball in the
locker room Tyreek Hill craziness. I mean, it was a

(17:40):
lot of joy. And I think they probably just tried
to overemphasize that a little bit to get everyone on board,
to say it's okay to smile, relax, it's okay to cuss.

Speaker 5 (17:48):
It's a line of scrimmage and be faking it, you know, right.

Speaker 7 (17:51):
I mean they're jacking with people again. Okay, but you
are right, Danny. There's not room for air. You know,
the Denver brom Goes aren't gonna fold. You might not
say they're a great football team, and you might not
believe in bo Nicks to the level of scaredness. Okay,
you know it's not Josh Allen, But I tell you what,
Sean Payton's.

Speaker 5 (18:10):
A legitimate NFL coach.

Speaker 7 (18:11):
Okay, he sets his jaw and that come back against
the Giants was just historic and incredible. They're not a
great team, but they're gonna be feisty. And guess what,
they're one of the few teams in the NFL that
play defense. And it's a division game. Denver's gonna fight
Kansas City and.

Speaker 5 (18:26):
They get him twice.

Speaker 2 (18:28):
There's two more left with them.

Speaker 5 (18:29):
Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 7 (18:30):
And if you know, if you're if you're a game
behind them, the Chiefs are better.

Speaker 5 (18:34):
Okay, I believe the Chiefs are better. Yep.

Speaker 7 (18:36):
But Denver is gonna set their jaw and not back down,
and they play good defense. Who else in the NFL
plays good defense, Danny, the Chiefs. Not many teams don't
play any good defense. They just go out and score
and score and score and score. So I'm just saying
I respect Denver that they are worthy if they have
a better record in the Chiefs to say, why can't

(18:59):
we when the vision and not you? And you always
got to start with being the best team in your division.
I don't think the Chargers have it in them for
some reason. They have the hecks of all hackses. Everybody
gets hurt. Yeah, I mean, you better sign a good
contract if you're an offensive lineman there, because you're going
to be on the injured reserve soon. It's just unbelievable
how they just go down like flies and injuries everywhere.

(19:22):
So the Chargers don't have all their stuff together. But
Denver will maximize how good they are and they play
good defense, so I'll respect them for the Chiefs, So
I agree with you get back to business. But I
think Patrick's saying it's okay to smile and have some
fun and play loose. We can still be great and
play loose. And I'm sure that's brand new information to
a lot of those Chiefs players.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
And quickly the Commanders are next. It's Monday night football.
You obviously paid close attention because watching the Cowboys and
Commanders and the Cowboys just undress their defense. What are
the problems there? And will it be pretty easy for
the Chiefs to capitalize on that?

Speaker 7 (20:00):
It likely is because the Commander's defense is really poor
right now. So Dan Quinn's a great coach, and he's
a defensive minded coach, but he's not dictating to the
offense right now. You know, just go watch a little
bit of the Cowboys tape. No Cowboys offense is good
and the game is much closer than you think. Danny
had just turned right at the right time for the Cowboys.

(20:20):
One of the things that's going to be asked about
is Jayden Daniels. You know, if he's not available right
everyone's going to immediately say Washington has no chance in
this game. But I'll point out to you Marcus Mariota
is a starting quarterback. He feels comfortable in the Washington system.
He's run this offense this year, and you know, one
of the biggest stats that you look at for proficiency.

Speaker 5 (20:41):
If I give you only one stat.

Speaker 7 (20:43):
To look at, Danny, go run and see what yards
per attempt are for a team or a quarterback, both
offensively and defensively.

Speaker 5 (20:51):
But let's keep it simple. For the quarterback.

Speaker 7 (20:53):
I present to you that Jaden Daniels is at seven
point one yards per attempt, pretty good. Marcus Mariota is
seven point three per yards per attempt, and Mariota is
willing to run the football. He's averaging nine point four
yards of carry, double what Jayden Daniels is. So I
just want to point out, Danny, don't sign the game

(21:15):
off if Daniels isn't available.

Speaker 5 (21:18):
Okay.

Speaker 7 (21:18):
The key to them is Deebo Samuel. Okay, he is
the next best big weapon in the NFL in my opinion,
in the last five years after Tyreek Hill. He was
not available yesterday. So Deebo Samuels was not out there.
He's an elite player. And they also were missing one
of their very good running backs as well in the ballgame,

(21:41):
and so that hurts.

Speaker 5 (21:41):
Washington as well.

Speaker 7 (21:42):
So injuries are a factor. Terry McLaurin is the other guy.
Those two guys, Samuel McLaurin were not available. If those
two guys play. Danny, I don't care which quarterback it is.
Washington has the capability to score. I think the Chiefs
will control the game, but they're going to have to
play good offense to do it.

Speaker 5 (22:00):
And I think washington spirit can be broken. The Raiders
is unbelievable.

Speaker 7 (22:05):
I mean, if you follow what Danny I just said,
they started the game with a level seven to ten
confidence and went down to zero by halftime. Right, Washington's breakable.
Does that make sense? Washington is breakable as well.

Speaker 5 (22:20):
But it won't be. I'll point this out.

Speaker 7 (22:22):
It won't be if they're starting quarterback, isn't there you
might sign off and go they're done.

Speaker 5 (22:26):
Nope.

Speaker 7 (22:26):
Marcus Mariota is scary when he's the backup Danny as
a starter. You don't trust him as a backup. When
he has nothing to lose and he's just kind of
saying I'll do my best. He can become dangerous.

Speaker 2 (22:37):
Let's talk some college football. Next to Missoo and the
Sunflower showdown with Stand It's Danny and Stan's Football Weekend
presented by ASFCA.

Speaker 1 (22:47):

Speaker 2 (24:27):
Welcome back. I went in saying that no matter what,
if Missouri went on the road and beat Auburn, I
was going to be impressed. So I'm guess I'm going
to stick to that. Wasn't the prettiest game in the world,
but they got the job done. To me, it was
very similar stand to the UCF game for KU Super
important in a game that I thought UCF kind of

(24:49):
lost as much as KU won, and I thought that
maybe in this game Auburn lost as much as Missouri won.

Speaker 7 (24:57):
Well, Danny Clinkscale steps up and shows he's he's a
man of his word, because Missouri sure tested you, Danny
to say you're happy with that performance. Yeah, how about
Auburn's kicker. You know what a nightmare to be an
Auburn fan. Like this guy was a great kicker with
a lot of strength. Then he had a big part
of his intestine cut out. He's weak, he can't kick

(25:21):
the ball fifty yards hardly. He's trying. He's such a
great story, and he loses you the game.

Speaker 5 (25:27):
Now what do you do?

Speaker 7 (25:28):
I mean, you're gonna beat the guy upright for his
health problem. I mean, come on, but Auburn has lost
four straight games. I think all of our ranked teams
Danny in close fashion and you basically can put the
moniker on them.

Speaker 5 (25:41):
They know how to lose. And that is a big
theme about this.

Speaker 7 (25:45):
But we've watched competitive football a long time, and it's
okay if the other team loses the game. Missouri didn't
dominate the game, didn't go out and win the game,
even at the end of regulation, even in the first overtime,
and not even really in the second overtime, except for
their defense was.

Speaker 5 (26:03):
Good and they played.

Speaker 7 (26:04):
But at the end of the day, you have a
game at Auburn, and that crowd was into it. They
made it a harder place to play. Auburn brought everything
you and I predicted when we talked about it, and
so we do just we need Missouri to get credit.
And you are in a mode in college football survive
and advance. Just survive in advance. And you might look
around and we may split some hairs and talk about

(26:27):
quality of this and quality of that.

Speaker 5 (26:29):
Danny, let me tell.

Speaker 7 (26:31):
You, you're just like every other team in the country.

Speaker 5 (26:34):
So do not Missouri fans. I'm sure they're not embarrassed.

Speaker 7 (26:37):
I've probably mad at this right now for even saying
it wasn't a perfect Missouri game. But my point is
if you win the game, that's what it's all about,
right I saw, I saw Virginia. Virginia played Washington State,
and Washington State was the better team. Virginia somehow wins
the game and moves up three spots in the polls Okay,

(27:00):
no embarrassment there, Like, hey, we won, let's move on.

Speaker 5 (27:04):
So good job by Missouri. You're staying alive. And they
are right now just outside the playoff hunt.

Speaker 7 (27:09):
The top eleven teams in the country are probably going
to be in the college football playoff. One smaller conference
group of six champion is going to join them, but
most likely it looks like Dandy, it'll be the top
eleven teams as we see it, as long as the
ACC and then especially the Big twelve stay in the
top ten or so. But if that's the case, Missouri
is right on the outside and one of the teams

(27:29):
that the TA can go after it.

Speaker 5 (27:30):
Who's in the top ten is Vanderbilt.

Speaker 7 (27:33):
Big game? This is a perfect big game. Auburn was
kind of everything to lose and nothing to gain. First
road game. Auburn's not that good. They're a five hundred team.
But you and I set it up like, man, you've
got to win this game. They did. Now you take
a deep breath and go, are you kidding me? We're
underdogs and and we're going on the road. College game

(27:54):
Day is going to be there. The TV version is
going to be there. I mean, Vanderbilt is a great story, Danny.
But when you physically are an offensive lineman or a
linebacker for a Zoo and you look at in detail
who you're going.

Speaker 5 (28:06):
To go up against, you know, you study this guy, how.

Speaker 7 (28:09):
Big he is and everything about him, how much he
gained since he's been in college. What is bench press is?
What is quickness level? I'm telling you, Danny, Missouri is
way better than Vanderbilt. Now, they have played magical football
and Diego Pavia, Yes, he's.

Speaker 5 (28:26):
A magical player.

Speaker 2 (28:27):
He's a magical player.

Speaker 5 (28:29):
No question.

Speaker 7 (28:29):
He's a one Hey like right now, if I had
to vote for the Heisman, he's my number one guy.
I mean, what they've done this year and the games
they've won, I give him all the credit in the world.
But for them to try to play the role as
a favorite when more than half the crowd's going to
be Missouri fans at Vanderbilt, this is a great situation.

Speaker 5 (28:49):
Yeah, probably Maszoon needs to win.

Speaker 7 (28:50):
If you want to be a college football playoff team,
you don't have to be a college football playoff team
to have.

Speaker 5 (28:55):
A great year.

Speaker 7 (28:56):
Okay, so there's room to breathe here. They did the
hard work against Auburn. I think they'll be a little
bit better and ready for this game. And Missouri physically
is better than Vanderbilt at a higher degree than they
were physically better than Auburn. So that is really some
nice room to breathe because what did Missouri not have

(29:17):
in the Alabama game and not having the Auburn game?
Great running right, either, neither game, and that's you know,
welcome to the SEC's defensive tackle.

Speaker 5 (29:27):
When you're playing Alabama and Auburn. That's not what it's
going to be like Vanderbilt.

Speaker 7 (29:31):
What happens, Danny, if Missouri gets back to being a
great running team again, you can suck the air.

Speaker 5 (29:37):
Out of this game and just go dominate it physically.

Speaker 7 (29:40):
So I think it's a real great opportunity to make
it sound like, you know, you're playing the Kansaite Chiefs
this week on the road at number ten Vanderbilt, but
this couldn't be better. That's this is who you want
to play when they're ranked number ten. Pavia is incredible,
but man, he is going to have trouble getting away
from that defensive line at Missou. I would never bet
against this guy. I mean I know him through Jerry Kill.

(30:04):
I don't know him personally, but Jerry Kill is the
guy who brought him from New Mexico State.

Speaker 5 (30:08):
They're a tandem together.

Speaker 7 (30:10):
Jerry Kills a friend of mine and a longtime coach
and a guy I grew up with, so I really
have a personal understanding. I've been watching this guy, even
at New Mexico State, pull off his magic. But I
think this is too big an ask against Missouri. I
think Missouri's got a great chance to win this game,
and if they can just vault forward a little bit,
just a little bit forward, they could be a part

(30:30):
of the college football playoff.

Speaker 2 (30:33):
This week is the Sunflower Showdown. It's kind of a
different Sunflower Showdown that maybe most teams would have anticipated.
This is not, right now, any kind of battle to
surge forward towards the college football Playoff. What it is
is really a survival test and a game that the
loser of the game is not going to feel very
good about their season, and they're going to have some

(30:54):
work to do and they're going to have some questions
to answer. This is almost a game that the low
the loser, is going to be the bigger story than
the winner.

Speaker 7 (31:04):
Well, I think you said it perfectly, Danny and the
fear of the food chain, the losing side versus the
fun and winning side. It's almost a greater stress and
sense of purpose when you got the losing side staring
you in the face. First of all, obviously, KSE State
fans never thought that their football team would be three

(31:27):
and four right now. They didn't have an official poll,
but the oddsmakers would have said case State's likely the
champion of the Big Twelve, the favorite this year, and
definitely in the game right the Big Twelve championship game,
Mark KSE State in and who else is going to
join him? That was the mindset going in a season.
And now case as three and four. If you lose

(31:47):
this game, Danny from KSE State's perspective, bow eligibility gets
into big time play. You're three and five and you
just sat out a week, and you just lost to
Kansas and you play Texas Tech. I mean, just think
the stress that case State's going to be under if
they lose this game. And there's no way a k
State fan in July and August as they were fired up.

(32:09):
I saw a lot of them, myself fired up for
the season, would ever think that they would be the
underdog getting ready for this game in Vegas. Okay, but
Kansas is the favorite. So that's the k State story.
Losing Wow, is so hard to take on the Kansas side.

Speaker 5 (32:27):
They're the favorites.

Speaker 7 (32:28):
They got a sixteen game losing streak, an eight game
home losing streak to k State. Nanny, that's sitting there,
Lance Leipold has coached four years already against K State
and he's not won one time. If he doesn't win
this game and goes OH to five against K State,
and you turn around and go to Manhattan next year,

(32:51):
and you think, logically, man lightpol might be OH to six,
even though you and I know that should not be
a factor.

Speaker 5 (32:58):
Think about what.

Speaker 7 (32:58):
That'll be in the mind set of the KU fans.
And Lance Leipolt has a chance to be a favorite
and go in this game. They got to take care
of business. This is their chance. Jalen Daniels, a six
year quarterback. They are playing good football. But if they lose,
first of all, Giant missed opportunity against K State. But
then on the other side, they're four and four, okay,

(33:20):
and there's a chance that they might go one in
three to finish the year, dating with the.

Speaker 5 (33:24):
Schedule they have left. And if they end up.

Speaker 7 (33:27):
With this loss and then it damages them a little
bit more and they end up five and seven for
the second year in a row, that would take out
all the joy that you felt early in this year.
So it's not double, it's like triple or quadruple or nothing.
Because you win, you just beat k State and then
at all those streaks and your football team's five and three,
you may have damaged k State enough that they don't

(33:48):
even go to a bowl game in a year that
they were favorites. So this game is giant for the
weirdest reasons.

Speaker 5 (33:55):
Not what we expected at all when the season started.

Speaker 7 (33:58):
But you said it, well, I think it's going to
be more about licking the wounds mid afternoon on Saturday,
because whichever team loses, their fans really aren't going to
be interested.

Speaker 5 (34:08):
In watching any other college football the rest of the day.

Speaker 7 (34:11):
I mean, you know what I'm saying, yep, or sipping
on their favorite beer or anything else. There's there's going
to be just a sick feeling for whoever loses, because.

Speaker 5 (34:21):
Kate U's got a chance.

Speaker 7 (34:22):
And if kase State says we just beat you for
the ninth time in a row and christened your new
stadium look with the same old feeling you've had the
last fifteen years or so, man, that is.

Speaker 5 (34:34):
Not going to be good in postgame tailgates.

Speaker 7 (34:36):
And obviously K State fans can't accept or don't even
think it's possible that the streak can end, not in
the year where they had the things going that they
did end of the year. At the end of the day,
the football teams are leveling out pretty much, Danny.

Speaker 5 (34:49):
Yeah, they're pretty equal.

Speaker 2 (34:50):
I'm a little Dan. I gotta say I'm a little
surprised that Kansas is favored in this game. And job
number one. Reason Number one is they've just been awful
against the run. If somehow in the bye week they
can somehow figure out a way to stop the other
teams from running the ball right down their throat. They're
giving up an average of but almost two hundred yards
a game, almost two touchdowns a game. I gave up

(35:12):
nine point eight yards of carry against Texas Tech. I
mean k State can run the football. I'm astounded their favorite.

Speaker 5 (35:21):
Well. The thing that I will say to you, Danny,
and we'll be able to.

Speaker 7 (35:24):
Talk about even more as the week unfolds is a
great example as I had my son in law come sit.

Speaker 5 (35:31):
Down and I happen to.

Speaker 7 (35:32):
Be watching k State, I mean KU football against Texas Tech,
and I just said, look at the scoreboard. Texas Tech
is blowing them out. Look at the rushing yard age.
I mean it's like almost ends up with almost four
hundred yards rushing Grice.

Speaker 5 (35:45):
YEP.

Speaker 7 (35:46):
So that's the story. You quote it accurately. There's no
reason for you not to say those things, Danny. But
when I break it down and get into the football
and the ex's and oh's, I started showing him and
I said, what they had was two runs that were
incredible be blocked by Texas Tech, poorly defended by Kansas,
and a running back who made a couple of good cuts.

Speaker 5 (36:06):
And sped down the field. But I go, you cannot
ever project the case.

Speaker 7 (36:10):
State's going to have a seventy five yard touchdown run
sometime in the game, So let's just wipe that out.
Never in a game do I predict, oh, there's going
to be a couple of sixty yard touchdowns. You cut
that out, Danny, and you watch the tape closely. Then
you match that up with the second half, only the
second half of the UCF, and you start seeing some hope.
So let me say this about Kansas's defense. If you

(36:33):
create doubt and you let them know that day that
they're not very good on defense, they will give you
the red carpet treatment the rest of the game.

Speaker 5 (36:43):
Okay, just like the Raiders.

Speaker 7 (36:44):
If everyone's listened to the first part of our podcast
and didn't fast forward, Danny. The Raiders laid down and
look like a different team in the second half than
they were at the beginning of the game. Kansas has
that problem when things go bad against Cincinnati the hundred
yards when Texas Tech running all over them, they were,
you know, in that mode. But I've seen them, Danny,

(37:07):
and I think they're going to be fully energized after
a week off, playing out of their minds, and I
think they are going to challenge what is not a
strength of KSE State the running game. Case State's a
passing team now, so it's gonna be worth watching early
in the game. Can Kansas slow down the run? And
I will propose to you if you want to come
over Danny this week, I'll show you plenty of plays

(37:27):
where Kansas' defense is just fine.

Speaker 5 (37:29):
So just don't throw. Don't throw.

Speaker 7 (37:31):
The end statement all in there without saying every game
is a new game and you've got to be able
to break them.

Speaker 5 (37:38):
So that'll be the key. If you want to hear
about keys to the game from the k State.

Speaker 7 (37:41):
Perspective, you've got to punch KU's defense in the mouth
and let them know you're not stopping us today, and
once that happens, the game swings to being k State.

Speaker 5 (37:52):
Should be the favorite. But that is not going to
happen on the first play of the game. It's going
to take a little while and TC it's got to
prove it.

Speaker 4 (37:59):
They do have to prove it.

Speaker 2 (38:00):
We'll see which team does prove it, and we see
which team by three o'clock, probably a little bit earlier
than that because probably both teams are going to try
to run the football. We will see which is the
happy team and which is the team and fan base
in panic, never in panic talking football with Stan. Stan
always appreciate the time, and we'll talk to you again
next week.

Speaker 5 (38:20):
Kate. Thank you Danny.
