Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to the Danny Clinkscale Reasonably Irreverent podcast, insightful and
witty commentary, probing interviews and detours from the beaten path.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Welcome to Monday Musings Danny and Friends. Sports Rap always
presented by Advanced Sports and Family Chiropractic and Acupuncture. There's
eight locations all around the Kansas City area which you
can hear me say a couple times during the course
of this podcast on the new bits of information we
have from doctor woodhele on his new spots, So that'll
be cool to have you check out and make sure
(00:36):
you get your information. If you're not seeing them already,
you should be. ASFCA, well, sports is all about ups
and downs, and there's a winner and there's a loser
all the time. So why wouldn't a Monday look at
our weekend be filled with ups and downs? And it
certainly is some real highs, some pretty frustrating lows, and
(00:56):
something in between. And I guess maybe the end between
is what we'll explore with Jesse Nowle. He was longtime
writer for the Kansas City Star just recently moved over
to the Athletic and a nice move for him. We'll
talk to him about that and the Chiefs who looked
just great. It was the preseason. He had to wait
a couple of weeks before we see real NFL football.
There'll be cutdowns to come talk about all that with
(01:18):
Jesse coming up. Of course, there was college football this weekend,
and our area schools were heavily involved. In Week zero,
there wasn't that much college football, but both k State
and KU played in it, and for k State it
was irish frustration on multiple levels. They lost the game.
Avery Johnson's father and his brother were caught on video
(01:39):
brawling in the streets in a puddle of water in Dublin,
which is not funny, but anyway, they apologized and all that,
but it would look like an absolute public service announcement
for not drinking as the family brawl ensued. After the
Cats fell to the Cyclones twenty four to twenty one,
(02:00):
lots to be frustrated about. K State out gained Iowa
State in the game. Iowa State made the big plays,
they made the big fourth downs, Chris Climbing gambled quite
a bit, and it didn't pay off much of the time,
especially late, and so Iowa State gets their fifth win
in their last six tries against Kansas State, and they
won't play next year, but they're trying to work on
(02:20):
maybe figuring out a way to play. Most years, Kansas
couldn't have had it any better. They opened their new stadium,
the weather was beautiful, it's cooled off, it had the
hint to fall to it, and then they went out
and absolutely annihilated Fresno State and it was easy pickings
to the point where they just sort of ran the
ball on every down in the second half. And so
(02:41):
really just a wonderful Saturday night to start it up
for Kansas and they have an easy one to follow it.
So that is just about the polar opposite of what
k State did. And speaking of polar opposites, our local
soccer continues to be just that. As the Casey Current
win again handily, Sporting Kansas City lose again handily, and
(03:01):
their season is just fizzling on out. Biggest frustration in
probably fifteen years as far as Sporting Kansas City is concerned,
and a lot of frustration came to an end. Not
only for him won Tommy Fleetwood, but in our home
as well. We are big Fleetwood fans. We have lived
and died with his and mostly died with his close
(03:22):
calls on the PGA Tour and this time around and
the biggest payday of them all, the Tour Championship. He
gets the job done. He played well. Others did not.
My wife even watched all of it when she had
been sort of so frustrated with thinking that she was
a jinx for Tommy that she wasn't watching. We watched
it all. We had a great time. It was great
(03:43):
fun and just feel great. And if root and for
a golfer, as we've said, is not good business. If
you win three or four percent of the time, you'll
go to the Hall of Fame. But Tommy Fleetwood gets
a big one and gets the monkey off his back.
It was really really fun in our house. We even
had a toast of Scotch at the end when Tommy won.
So that's all part of the mix. Today on Money Musings,
(04:06):
Danny and Friends Sports Wrap always presented by ASFCA, and
we kick it off with Jesse Nowle from the Athletic
Talking Cheeps. Coming up next.
Speaker 1 (04:15):

(07:21):
have our friend Jesse Newell be our Monday friend today
and talk about the Kansas City Chiefs and he gets
to talk about them in all the best of ways.
After an impressive home preseason game. And first of all,
Jesse a couple weeks on the job at the Athletic
now after a great tenure at the Kansas City Star.
(07:41):
Very exciting move for you. The Athletic is a tremendous publication.
I am a subscriber and you must be really happy now.
Speaker 5 (07:48):
Yeah, I appreciate that, and it is a different roles.
It's kind of funny on these sorts of things where
you're working with the Kansady Star on a Sunday and
then working with the Athletic on a Monday, so sometimes
these things change over quickly. But it's been great so far,
and obviously one of those national type publications where you
can get help from all over the map if you
need help with the story or people reaching out. So yeah,
(08:10):
it's been good so far. Should allowed to allow to
write some bigger stories, some bigger profiles, and looking forward
to where it comes. But obviously the big news here
is Chief season's about to start and a lot of
people are interested in this area.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
No doubt about that. Now, what the heck's going on?
The Chiefs can't win a preseason game, I mean, obviously
it doesn't matter at all, and many of these games
they've played well and led and then if somebody checked
back after they stopped watching, what we lost again. They
lost twenty nine to twenty seven to the Bears, but
that hardly mattered. The offense was almost seamless. If not
(08:42):
for a drop pass, they would have had three touchdowns
and three possessions. It was kind of up in the
air as to whether they would starter as would play
that much they did. The biggest question mark going in
was the offensive line. That was answered pretty well. I mean,
it really couldn't have gone much better.
Speaker 5 (08:59):
No, And I actually I appreciate. I think the Chiefs
Chiefs dot com story on their website was Chiefs starters
outscore Bears by seventeen or whatever. So they were just
ignoring the final score expission game, the preseason game. So
I kind of respect that a little bit because that's
actually how it went. As you're talking about, Danny, you know,
the Chiefs starters dominated, they looked great, and you know
that second game was kind of weird at Seattle, where
(09:21):
the Chiefs had to go to two straight West Coast
teams in a row, really long flights, not much of
a break in between, then went back to training camp
in between and so they really almost took that game off,
so it was good to see for them. You get
back in there and the defense is playing well, playing better,
stronger against the run, and then Mahomes and the offense, Yeah,
showed what can happen if you get some protection. And
(09:42):
the Chiefs on the left side had a lot of
protection with Kingsley Somat to eat left guard and then
Josh Simmons at left tackle. And when Patrick Mahomes gets
a few seconds to go back there survey and have
a pocket in front of him, you're reminded like, oh,
he can throw deep. Oh, we can find guys over
the middle. Oh, this whole operation looks totally different. Definitely
encouraging signs going into Week one. And I think a
(10:03):
little bit on a side note, but the Chiefs playing
on their home field on that grass instead of you know,
playing a much of the starters on that turf which
in Seattle, which a lot of guys actually got injured on,
I think that might have played into it as well.
So the Chiefs flipped things around here in this preseason,
but they have to be happy with how they're heading
in a Week one here coming up against the Los
Angeles Chargers.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
Simmons had looked good all along, but Sue Matilla had
not been very good at all, and it was just
like he flipped on a dime and it was completely
different performance.
Speaker 5 (10:37):
Yeah, and it's interesting too, because he just got knocked
off balanced a couple times in those previous games. It
just seems like he was trying to idea who he
wanted but just kind of got flat footed. And the
first game against Arizona, Blitzer completely knocked him off guard
and knocked him off his feet, and then the second
game it was a defensive lineman. But you know, it's
(10:58):
the Chiefs. I've said this a lot. Mahomes does so
well to deal with pressure, and he does so well
to kind of navigate a pocket, but what he can't
deal with is just immediate stuff, you know, things where
he has no chance to hit his back foot and
see what's coming. And that's what he faced so much
last year, and that's what he faced in the first
couple of games at left guard, when Kingsley was really
(11:19):
getting bowled over before Mahomes could even get set. And
so that third game, that's why it was encouraging. I know,
this kind of an old football phrase is kind of
get your butt beat slowly. And then that's what Josh
Simmons has done a great job up He sort of
just anchors himself on the left tackle side of just
getting himself between the defender and Mahomes and he kind
of gets his butt beat slowly and that's enough for Mahomes.
(11:39):
Solmatia was not doing that. He was getting his butt
beat quickly. That changed the third game. That's to give
the chief some more confidence in him because he's a
great in the run game. He looks super athletic there.
But you know, you really can't afford to have another
guy that just allows guys free rushes to Patrick Mahomes.
That's where we see Patrick Mahomes lose himself mentally, and
it's what the Chiefs are trying to avoid. So that
(12:00):
third game wasn't encouraging sign. We'll see if he can
carry it over. It's gonna be a tough schedule here
to start off with. With some of the pass rushers
the Chiefs go against in the first few weeks.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
I guess it's been hard to judge because when they've
looked bad, it's been generally when the top players have
been out but the defense, I would say that probably
coming out of camp it's not like as much of
a smile as the offense has been.
Speaker 5 (12:25):
I would say not. But I think here's my caveat
with that. I mean, I think there's potentially places that
they aren't as good. And you saw the trade for
Derek Noddy, that was one place where that defensive tackle
next to Chris Jones, as far as a run stopper goes,
outside of Mike Penell, they really had nobody to fill
that role. So it makes sense with them bring Noughty back,
(12:46):
a guy that they've trusted, a guy that they've known
and can fit into their system really quickly here since
he was with the team previously seven years. But I
would say more's depth, Danny. I mean, we've seen years
in the past where you know, the Chief signed like
and Drew Tranquil and we're like, well, why would you
sign him? You know, you don't really have a starting
spot for him, But then Nick Bolton goes down in
the season and you're like, oh, you don't miss a
(13:06):
beat because you have this great backup there. Or a
couple of years ago they signed Mike Edwards and you're like, well,
is he like the force safety and then you have
some injuries you need him to step in and it
really helps out to have this depth. I don't know
that the Chiefs have that this year. Like what if
Nick Bolton goes down, they don't have great options. You
know what if Chris Jones, you know, went down for
any period of time, they don't have great options on
the interior there. I like their starting guys, I love
(13:29):
their defensive end depth. I think they're gonna have a
great pass rush and the pressure rates should result in
more sacks this year. I think their secondary is pretty good.
I think they had a couple of guys emergent linebacker
like a Cooper McDonald in there that they didn't expect.
So I think some of those guys are okay. It's
just a matter of, like you're sort of asking yourself,
what if certain guys go down, do the Chiefs have
the depth necessary to sort of fill in for those roles.
(13:52):
In other past years, they really needed that depth and
they used it and it was kind of what helped
him through the regular season. This year, I just don't
know that there's quite that wiggle room, especially if certain
guys went down. So we'll see how that plays out
of the course of the season. Still could be a
very good defense, but I think it's maybe a little
bit thinner than we've seen in some years past.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
Well, player cut down day comes tomorrow. You can obviously
cut people before that, but you have a great breakdown
of what you think the roster will look like at
the Atlantic. Is there is running back the position group
that probably might see the most turmoil here in the
last in cut down day or when other people cut
(14:29):
some guys that maybe the Chiefs might have an interest in.
Speaker 5 (14:33):
Yeah, I think so. I mean so just kind of
peak guys, bewd the curtain. I wrote up my fifty
three minute projection for the Chiefs right after the preseason
game that night, and then it posted the next morning,
and I said in there that trades and surprises could
be you know, still coming. And the two spots I
said for a trade or potential waiver wire spot was
defensive tackle, which you know one for two so far
(14:53):
that one happened, and then running backsman the other one.
Elijah Mitchell just really never showed that burst. I think
they thought he was going to have recovering from injuries,
and so they're a little bit thin there, and they'd
love to get a third down back who could you know,
pass protect be relied on for that and maybe add
some explosiveness to the pass game. Just because Richard Smith
the rookie, he's kind of more of a gadget role
(15:13):
right now, and I just he tries hard blocking, but
I just don't think you want Patrick Mahomes having to
rely on him to make a bunch of reads when
it comes to blitzing defenders and making sure that he can,
you know, keep the face of the franchise upright. So
I'm sure they'd love to get a guy like that.
And you know, honestly, the Chiefs face is very same
thing last year when they picked up some a JP
Ryan late in the process and he ended up being
(15:34):
kind of missing piece for them. So if there's something
like that out there, potentially maybe a little bit younger
that they could add, I think that is the one
position left out there. The Chiefs will be scouring the
waiver wire and potentially looking for trades to try to
get an upgrade, because right now, I think only three
of those spots have been solidified and they're going to
be looking for a fourth one, especially with Rishard Smith,
his skill set being more of a receiver running back
(15:54):
combo than a true running back that they've had here
in the past. I have to go with that backup position.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
We spend problematical at times. How about the pass rush?
What are we thinking going in?
Speaker 5 (16:06):
I honestly, I think this is kind of This could
be a huge surprise for guys, for people out there.
The Chiefs were tied for eighteenth and sacks last year,
but their pressure rate was really good, so there. I mean,
we know from year to year, if you look at
the studies out there, pressure rate is more correlated year
to year than sacks. Sometimes sacks are a little bit fluky,
correckets rid of the ball, Maybe there's an intentionial grounding
(16:28):
that doesn't get count as us. I mean, there's just
weird things that happen. So for one, you think the
chief sack total would come up automatically in that way.
But you know, we saw Ashton Galotti come in there
and have some really frocious snaps in that Week three.
He's starting to come on defensively, and the less he thinks,
the more he's just allowing his athleticism to play. I
think he'll be kind of a factor in there. Charles Amnahu,
(16:49):
a year after his knee injury, should be better and
so I think that he can provide something there. And
then oh more, Norman a Lot their second round rookie
on the interior, and he just had some amazing pressure
numbers at college a year ago, and he's been hurt,
he's been battling an ankle injury, but he becomes healthy
and they can put him in in that sort of
role with Chris Jones next to him. I just think
(17:11):
this pass rush has great potential with the guys that
they have and a guy like George Carloftis who's still
super young and emerging. So I'm actually going to put
in the Athletic my bold pretches of the season. I'm
gonna say the Chiefs returned to top three in sacks
wow this year, And so to me, that's one of
those things we haven't really talked about that much, but
I see a lot of potential with not only the
edge rushers but the interior of that. And I think
(17:32):
the Chiefs can get back to some of those really
gaudy numbers of that a year ago with maybe a
little bit better fortune coming with the sack numbers.
Speaker 2 (17:39):
Well, that is going to be very good news for
Chiefs fans, to say the least. Now we're going to
get a lot of fun and interesting stuff right away,
and the chief schedules pretty much you know, interesting in
salty throughout. But right out of the box you get
a very key division game and then a grudge game
against the Eagles. So we're gonna hit the ground running,
(18:02):
although we have to wait a little bit to start running.
Speaker 5 (18:06):
Yeah, you know, so a few weeks here, it's kind
of go go go with the preseason. Like I said,
the Chiefs had these back to back crazy West Coast
trips and now it's okay, cut down day, Wait a
couple of weeks. But that game in Brazil will be
passing and it'll be big for the division. I mean,
we know the Chiefs escape by the skin of their
teeth against the Chargers, the Raiders, and the Broncos all
in home games. Last year. Everything came down to basically
(18:29):
the last driver or the last play. So this will
be important one in the AFC West race to start
off with. And then man if the Chiefs did lose
that game, or even if they win it, you come
right back home and you face the Eagles, so that'll
be a marking matchup as well. Sure seems like as
we're going into the season and looking at this thing
from kind of a five thousand foot view, that the
schedule a little bit frontloaded for the Chiefs and that
(18:50):
the back half gets a little bit easier. But yeah,
right off the bat, they're gonna have to be good
and you want to avoid those slow starts. But historically
any Read's been really good with that. They believe that
their training camp sets them up for that because they
pushed so hard in training camp to get things going.
And so history would tell you the Chiefs are pretty
good in September and they're gonna need it this year
because of the competition there is going to be pretty good.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
And I'm sure you'll be writing about this because you
got a couple of weeks before the season actually starts.
You sound like you're pretty positive about the Chiefs, and
why wouldn't you be in general? But what is your
pulse right now as far as the record is concerned.
Speaker 5 (19:26):
Yeah, I'm going with eleven and six in the athletic
and I know that sounds low and I was even
looking back to history, Andy Reid, if you look at
the over under win totals in Vegas in his twelve
years with the Chiefs, he's gone over ten times out
of those twelves. So normally the Andy Reid Patrick Wholme's
combination they win more games than you expect. But last
year was a little bit crazy, we know, like getting
(19:47):
a blocked field goal at the end or joinking in,
you know, a kick against the Chargers. They had some
good things go their way, and the schedule is tough,
and I think the AFC WES is tough, so I
could see some regression there. But eleven to six is
what I'm going with. Seem a little bit disappointing for
chief Stands compared to past years, but it would still
put them right in the thick of the race for
that AFC Championship and potentially getting in another super Bowl.
(20:09):
That would be their four straight, which be a pretty
crazy feet that they're able to pull it off.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
No doubt about that. It's always great to check in
with you. Congratulations again on the news gig, and we'll
be paying attention at the athletic and get to spread
your wings a little bit as far as your chops
are concerned. Always appreciate the time and look forward to
doing it again.

Speaker 2 (23:27):
Thanks to Jesse for providing all the information and congratulations
again on his really nice career move. And let's wrap
up the football with the college variety and let's start
off with well, let's start off with the frustrating part
and we can uplift to the second part of that.
Kansas State was behind all game long, but they fought
(23:48):
and usually they played their best right when they fell behind.
In the end, it was too many Cyclones, too much Cyclones,
too much Rocko Beck who made many big plays. His
stat line looks mediocre to say the least, fourteen of
twenty eight for one to eighty three, two touchdowns, no interceptions,
twelve rushes for eighteen yards. Of course, sacks counts negative
yards for the quarterback. But at the most opportune times,
(24:11):
he made the big throw, he made the big run,
he scored a touchdown. Running, He provided all the touchdowns
in one way or another for the Cyclones, who kind
of have a whammy over the Kansas State Wildcats, who
had to be frustrated. They got a nice day from
Avery Johnson. He himself was also at his best when
they would fall behind. Ended up with a nice line
(24:32):
twenty one of thirty two to seventy three. Cats ran
for four yards per Avery Johnson had some nice runs,
he scored a touchdown. There are a lot of good things.
They played really pretty tenacious defense held Iowa State to
just barely over three hundred yards, but in the end
it was the key plays. It was the fourth downs
that Iowa State would convert. It was the fourth downs
(24:54):
that k State wouldn't convert. At eight minutes to go,
Chris Climban decided to go for it on fourth down
from his own thirty I wouldn't have done it, but
that's just reflective of the way that college football is
coached these days. At that point in time, you think
he felt that his defense wasn't doing a very good
job with Iowa State, who picked up a tremendous amount
of offensive momentum in the second half after the Cats
(25:16):
had played great defense in the first half. But it's
just kind of the way that people think now, and
it's aggressive, and you know, I trust my team and
all that. Sometimes I think punting's the better part of valory.
I mean, one way or another, you're trusting your team.
I mean, if you go for it, you say you're
putting your trust in your offense. But if you punt,
(25:37):
you can say that you're putting your trust in your
defense to make a stop. Well, they didn't get the
first down. I was stay the first down on the
fourth down attempt, I was stay converted a big fourth
down A little bit later on when they're able to
run out the clock and win it twenty four to
twenty one in the state. Now we'll play North Dakota
State next. And they were disappointed afterwards, then really they
(26:00):
should be. That's the risk of you're not playing an
FCS school or a lesser school in your first game.
But I'm sure it was a great trip for the
most part for Kansas State fans to a beautiful place
like Ireland, but they would have liked to cap it
with the victory, and they did not, falling twenty four
twenty one to Iowa State. Well, just about as exactly
(26:24):
opposite as you can get was the Kansas Jayhawks, who
were really pretty much flawless in their game against Fresno State.
They scored Fresno State came back to tie, but after
that it was all Jayhawks. Jalen Daniels was impeccable in
the game. They didn't have to throw the ball that
much twenty times, but he completed almost every one of
them for three touchdowns one hundred and seventy six yards
(26:46):
eighteen of twenty a great quarterback rating of eighty seven
point zero. And it's a lot better to look at
QBR for college quarterbacks because nobody understands the quarterback rating
for at least in the NFL. You know that one
hundred is good in college football, you have no idea.
I think you can actually rack up a three hundred,
I believe. But anyway, basically, the Kansas played two backup
(27:10):
quarterbacks in this game and neither one of them threw
a pass, so he can tell how dominant it was.
The debut of the stadium was electric. It was a
sellout crowd. It was a beautiful night. They ended up
completely stuffing Fresno State after the initial surge by them.
They barely gained two hundred yards in the game. And
you're not playing an FCS opponent there, a bowl team
(27:33):
from last year, and so pretty darn impressive for ku
Jalen Daniels took some shots that probably was the only
slight downside there, but they got him out of there
and he was healthy, and when he is healthy, Kansas
is going to be tough to deal with in their
defense looked maybe better than expected to. So just a
great day at the office in every way for Kansas,
(27:55):
which plays Wagner next up at home. So it'll be
another fun one day at the booth as Kansas wins
it by an easy thirty one to seven, count more
dominant than that twenty four to seven at the half,
third quarter touchdown, and then as we said, it was
basically the equivalent of taking a knee the rest of
the way and Kansas gets the victory. As far as
(28:17):
the other kind of football is concerned, before we get
to the Kansas City Royals, we sort of going, you know,
the order you should football, other football, and baseball sporting.
Kansas City has fist had a really pretty much of
a disaster of a season. They give up four goals,
they have the worst defense in MLS. They had shown
(28:39):
some signs of life a little bit during the course
of the season when carries of Agnen took over, but
that's all kind of gone the wrong way. And playing
at Seattle's no way to try and build some momentum
and they don't as they are down two one at
the half and in the end it was actually I
think I said four too. It was five to was
(29:00):
the final score for Seattle, who has forty four points.
They're a good team, sporting the exact opposite. They're not
six fifteen and six on the season. A nice crowd
in Seattle was happy as Sporting played the foil in
this particular soccer opera, and they lose it by account
(29:22):
of four to two. In their season just kind of
sputtering away, which is just really kind of a shame.
There's no another way to look at it. And they've
really got a lot of decisions to make in the
off season with seventeen players going out of contract, and
so it's just all bad news. And it's the exact
(29:42):
opposite of what's going on with the Teal to nothing
victory over the Portland Thorns that was on the road
and they win handily and they are fourteen to two
and one. They're in first place by a mile. Portland's
actually a pretty good team, and we lost four games
coming into this one. But it was Tim Watchweinga again
(30:04):
doing the job. She got another goal and it was
Lorena the goalkeeper. Ninth clean sheet. Everything is good about
the Kansas City current an. The only thing flying the
ointment so far was the super hot day where they
had to delay the game for a whole long time.
But in the end, just more smiles for the Teal
(30:24):
and great great Kansas City sports story this summer and
keeping the story alive the Kansas City Royals. They were
winners in Detroit by account of ten to eight. It
salvaged the weekend. Every time the Royals look like they're
kind of half dead, they win a few games. Every
(30:44):
time they get your hopes up, they drop a couple.
This the game looked like it should have been an
absolute party when they're up six to one. But Seth Lugo,
who has not been good at all. They keeps saying
he's healthy, and he keeps going out and pitching poorly. Well,
he split up a six to one lead, cras almost
four now. He gave up six runs in four and
(31:05):
a third innings. But the offense has really been one
of the best in baseball since the All Star Break,
and one of the reasons is the sizzling hot Vinnie
Pascuentino hit another home run. He's got six in his
last seven games. His ops has surged over eight hundred,
and they've got another save at the back end. That
(31:26):
was a seamless one from Estevez. So many people have
complained about him, Well, he's got thirty four saves in
a two point sixty seven era. He's been just fine.
The bullpen has been pretty good of late. Also, although
they had the middle relief, didn't have a particularly good weekend.
Speaker 4 (31:42):
So.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
Royals do not pick up any ground. They lose a
little ground on the weekend, but it certainly could have
been worse. There's still just three games out at sixty
seven and sixty four. We'll check out the Pennant races
and such here in a minute. And the Tigers are
just playing great baseball. They were sensational for a while
than they had a stretch where they lost twelve or fourteen,
but they've bounced back from that, and they have all
(32:05):
kinds of guys having really fine seasons and drawn big
crowds and having a lot of fun about one hundred
thousand fans. We're in co America Park over the weekend.
So the Royals dropped two out of three, but as
they've done several times when they have had been on
the verge of a sweep, they avoid that sweep and
now play the Chicago White Sox on the road. White
(32:25):
Sox certainly are a little better, but they're not good.
So this is another one of these series where two
out of three is probably mandatory and anything less is
a severe disappointment. And we're down to about thirty five
games now and Rolls can't afford many more losses sixty
seven and sixty four. Does look like the wild card
will be somewhere around nine or ten games over five hundred,
(32:47):
so they need a surge. And what they still haven't
mastered this year throughout the year is really beating the
good teams. They've done just fine against the teams that
aren't very good, but they have not played well against
the teams and that continued over the weekend. But Sunday
provides a ten to eight wins, so they get a
lot of hits, a lot of contributions up and down
(33:08):
the lineup, but especially from one Vinnie Pascuentino and Mike
Elgar So it continues to just be a steady force.
Two for four, three hundred average, excellent play all around,
and that has probably been the feel good story I
would say of the season for the Royals. He didn't
play very well last year. He wasn't even assured of
a regular playing time when the season started, and now
(33:32):
he has gotten that and he has thrived in doing
that as well. Ten to eight for the Royals in
Chicago tonight for a three game series, finally get a
day off on Thursday. Let's check out the baseball standings,
our baseball round up, as we always do on Mondays.
And it's getting down to crunch time, obviously, and a
(33:54):
lot more things are probably clearer than they were at
one time, and we've got more have nots who don't
have much of a chance. But in the American League East,
the Blue Jays continue to do their work. Their playoff
percentage is ninety nine point seven. That's pretty good, and
there's nineteen games over five hundred, five game lead on
(34:15):
the Red Sox. The Red Sox took two out of
three from the Yankees Yankee salvage one on Sunday. They're
ten games over. So those are the three teams bunched out, Boston,
New York, and Seattle, all within a game of each other. Basically,
who are the teams that the Royals are chasing down?
Speaker 6 (34:31):
Now?
Speaker 2 (34:31):
Texas has started to play a little better, they're back
to five hundred, and the Guardians have gone on another
bad skid. They got hot, They had a terrible losing
streak ten games straight they lost, and then they got
hot and now they're in the tank again. They've lost
five straight games. They've fallen behind the Royals, so to
(34:51):
wrap up the East Blue Jays, Red Sox, Yankees, Rays
at the very periphery of the wild card, and the
Baltimore Orioles. They just started too late. They played good
ball for quite a while now, but it's too little
and too late for them. Royals ten and a half
games behind the Tigers in the division, Guardians twelve and
(35:13):
a half. Tigers cruising towards the playoffs, and they look
like a team that has sort of kind of a
good build for the playoffs too. They got a really
fine bullpen. Twins have died frittered away. They dealt at
the trade deadline and that was a good thing to
do because they've played very poorly since then. White Stocks
won a couple over the weekend, but they've dropped seven
(35:34):
of their last ten, so the Royals need to take
care of business with them. Astro's now up two games
on the Seattle Mariners. Astros had a long cold streak,
but they've righted the ship a little bit. Although they
lost on Sunday, cal Rawley. It is forty eighth and
forty ninth home runs to key Seattle's victory after they
dropped a couple. Actually, the Mariners have been doing the
(35:57):
Royals favor by dropping seven out of ten. But Raleigh
broke sal Perez's primary catcher record for home runs with
those forty eighth and forty ninth, and I'd say that
he's probably going to eventually get tired. But the Big
Dumper is a really cool nickname. It's fun, but nobody
ever says his name without saying Big Dumper like every time.
(36:20):
So anyway, the Mariners holding the last playoff spot right now.
The Rangers, with a bit of a surge, winning three
over the weekend, are back to five hundred. Angels have
fallen away. Athletics have played well for the last three
weeks or so. Real well, they've won I think twenty
out of thirty and they're the last team that the
Roles play this season at Sacramento, and people have looked
(36:44):
at that is not a tough spot in the schedule.
I think that's exactly wrong. I think the Athletics they
can really score and they're going to just be having
fun the last series of the weekend. Let's open matters
for the Royals when they go to Sacramento to conclude
the season. Phillies have things control in the National League East,
as they've won seven of their last ten. Mets have
(37:06):
right of the ship a little bit. They've split their
last ten games. They've got the last wild card right
now by a couple of games over the Reds with
their seven games back in the East, Marlin's had a
decent season for by their standards, but they have fallen
off the pace after a pretty good hot streak. Braves
continued to disappoint, although they've played better of late. The
(37:26):
Nationals are the bottom dwellers there. The Brewers are actually
cooled off a little bit after winning was it fourteen
in a row. They've lost six of their last ten.
They lost a couple over the weekend, but that doesn't
really matter right now anyway. Their lead is safe five
in the division, although the White Sox, I mean the
Cubs rather have gotten hot eight out of ten. They
(37:49):
swept a series on the weekend, pulled within five. The
Reds are hanging in there. They're just behind the Mets
and the wildcard still right in position to do something
with them. Cardinals periphery. They're on the very periphery of
the wild card and the disappointing Pirates are hey, let's
watch and pay attention to them every time Paul Skeens pitches,
(38:11):
and that's about it. They actually play pretty decent at home,
but they're appalling on the road. And out West, the
Dodgers and the Padres have the most fun race in baseball.
Out West. They're in a deadlock tie now at seventy
four and fifty seven. Padres took the first two in
their weekend series. Dodgers bounce back in the third to
(38:32):
tie it up in the West and the Diamondbacks they
need to get scalding hot just below five hundred. The
Giants have fallen away as well, and the Rockies have
played better, actually a little better, but that's still not good.
And they've split their last ten. And every time they
play a little bit better, they go and do what
they did this weekend, which is lose all the games.
(38:53):
And they've lost four in a row. And finally we
get to end with some smiles, some big smiles, to
say the least. As Tommy Fleetwood is a PGA Tour champion,
seemed to be very popular the way he's handled himself
in defeat. His heartbreaking losses and failures caused my wife
(39:15):
to stop watching. She couldn't stand it, and she felt
like she was a jinx, and she felt like it
wasn't creating a good fun for me to have her
moaning and groaning as he fell apart at the conclusion
of two playoff events and the Hertford Tournament earlier, so
about three times in a month it did not happen.
(39:37):
And finally, in his one hundred and sixty fourth PGA
Tour event, after doing everything else in golf, Ryder Cup
record is fantastic. He's cunched the winning he's made the
winning putt at the Ryder Cup, He's won eight times
around the world, and finally this time around it was
his time. He played solidly, bounce back from tough shots,
(39:57):
and what was good for him also the players around
him with more pedigree who started the day with actually
a chance, like Russell Henry and Patrick Cantley, Scotti Scheffler
and Keegan Bradley. Those were the closest players. They combined
to only go two under par. Can't Lay got off
to a horrendous start, so he sort of opened the
(40:20):
door for Tommy, and he was good enough to kick
it in and it was an emotional scene his stepson
was crying on his shoulder at the end, and just
a really cool thing man, a very popular player.
Speaker 4 (40:33):
You know.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
I'm glad he's popular because I like him. He's handled
everything well. He never shirked the media. He said all
the right things, and of course I think he's really
in the end. His popularity began because he's got a
cool head of hair. And I've said before his nickname
is Fairway Jesus, and he's not particularly religious, but he
(40:55):
hits the ball on the fairway all the time and
he kind of has that Jesus look, or at least
people of portrayed Jesus in paintings and the like. But
I'm sure the American fans who are rooting him on
like he was from Georgia during the Tour Championship will
probably not at all be on his side when it
comes to the Ryder Cup in New York next month.
(41:18):
But it was just a real fun thing. In our house,
we lived and died with every shot, and he made
some big putts that had us hooping and hollering and
had the dogs running for cover. And then in the
end he wins it by three shots and wins ten
million dollars for that, and then he wins the FedEx
up that's another ten million dollars. He's made enough money
(41:40):
in his career by being so successful that that's kind
of superfluous. But twenty million dollars is twenty million dollars
and Tommy Fleetwood has it, and he gets to smile, relax,
and I think probably now might be a real factor
for winning tournaments on the PGA Tour on a regular basis.
Tommy fleet would a champ. Smile for the Clinkscale household,
(42:01):
the Clinkscale seamen's household, and just a great way to
cruise into Monday. And after I finish this podcast, I'm
going to go play golf and celebrate with it with
my good friend Joe Spiker from Easton Roofing. And he
put his money where his emotions were. He knows I'm
a big fan. I got a text from him today
and he won money on Tommy betting on him to
(42:25):
win the tournament. So that's cool. We'll talk about that
today while we play golf, and I'll be smiling, and
even if I play a bad round, I will say,
what would you rather have done? Tommy play well and
he wins or you play well. I'm picking Tommy playing
well and winning for sure. So thanks to Jesse Newill
for being our friend today. It's always fun to talk
(42:45):
to you about sports on a Monday. Rest of the
