Welcome to Monday Musings Danny and Friends. Sports rap always
presented by Advanced Sports and Family Chiropractic and Acupuncture eight
locations all around the Kansas City area. Doctor Woodel and
his staff will fine tune you and have you feeling
good like he has me feeling good and my wife
feeling good. Great treatments, all different kinds. You can hear
about it on a couple of the spots during the
(00:36):
course of this podcast, and we always enjoy the support
of ASFCA. Well, it's the first big football weekend, and
nobody better to break it all down than Stan Weber.
We've got well pretty much lots of misery to dive into.
Of course, the whole area fan base are Chiefs fans.
Of course, the Chiefs lost, and they didn't really look
(00:57):
very good doing it, and then the other call teams
all lost except for Missouri, and they somebody had to
win that game because they were playing Kansas, and after
a slow start, they looked pretty darn good doing it.
And there was definite misery as far as Kansas State
was concerned. Army had the ball almost the whole game
and drove down at the end, won the game three
(01:18):
yards at a time, and the Cats were one drive
away by Avery Thompson Avery Johnson being zero and three.
Right now, they play at Arizona. We'll talk to Stan
all about the football, but there's plenty else going on.
I was out at the ballpark yesterday. The Roys couldn't
finish off a sweep against the Twins, but they're still
in the fight. They could have been a little bit
(01:40):
closer if they had finished the sweep, but they did not.
They lost five to one, and they scored eleven the
night before. And it always seems like if the Rows
have a big offensive night, they don't the next night.
And they didn't, and they lost, but only a couple
of games back, heading into a big road trip in
a huge series with the Guardians or one of the
many teams in the mix right now. For the wild
car and the Mariners, who played a little bit better
(02:01):
of played a couple of wins in a row. They
hold the wild card spot, but only a couple games ahead,
and the Royals do play them on the next home stand,
so lots to.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
Talk about there.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Also, the last eight US Opens have gone to either
Carlos Alcaraz or Janick Center, and yesterday it was Alcaaz
in a very impressive performance. Center wasn't at his bet,
particularly with his serve, but Alcaraz certainly was. He takes
it in four sets and takes the number one ranking
in the world with it, and Casey Current continues strong
(02:33):
and Sporting Kansas City continues not the Current have the
incredibly long clean sheet record going right now, Sporting Kansas
City loses late at home and they need a miracle
to make the playoffs. And we'll finish up with a
little bit of golf, some Rory McElroy magic in Ireland
in front of the home fans. Pretty cool scene there.
(02:54):
All that as part of Monday Musings Danny and Friends
Sports Rap always presented by as FCA.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
More of Danny's Reasonably Irreverend podcast. After this, we're.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
Here with doctor Brad Woodell from Advanced Sports and Family
Chiropractic and Acupuncture. And one thing we like to talk
about is the wide range of services that can help
you out mentally and physically.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
We offer many services from chiropractic, acupuncture, nutritional work, and rehabilitation.
And we take care of patients of all ages from
young to old and customize the care to help them
stay well and stay active.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
What are some of the things that you can do
to help that.
Speaker 4 (03:32):
The first thing we're going to do is we're going
to look at prevention. How do we keep you moving
and aligned? Ideally, just like your car, that expensive car
is going to have your top priority and maintenance. You
want to keep it in good shape. This body of yours,
it is worth a lot.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Advanced Sports and Family Chiropractic and acupuncture. Eight locations all
around the Kansas City area, so you can find one
near you to do all the things that doctor Woodell
has just stressed. It's as FCA. We're here at the
twenty third Street Brewery with Matt Llewellen all the time.
There's exciting things going on, new Water feature, new Beers,
and this fall football is back in Lawrence and that's cool.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Football back in Lawrence.
Speaker 5 (04:11):
Can you imagine that we actually had to endure a
year without it? Well, it is back. It's back on campus.
We're so happy that they're here. Just like years past.
We offer a free shuttle coming from the twenty third
Stree Brewery an hour and a half before game time.
We partner with the Boys and Girls Club to do that,
so it's helping a good cause also, so come in
to the brewery early before the game. Free shuttle to
(04:32):
and from the football game. We love to have you
out here, excited to have the Jayhawks back in town
where they belong.
Speaker 2 (04:37):

college and Pro weekend and when the Royals become no
longer relevant, we will be spending all of our time
on Mondays or Tuesdays with one Stan Webber talking about
football on Danny and Stan's Football Weekend. But for now
he gets to be our friend on Monday Musings Danny
and Friends Sports Rap. He is indeed my friend. We
(05:18):
are together a lot in the fall, that's for sure.
With College Game Day and the podcast and everything else
and Stan Certainly, it was an eventful weekend. A lot
of frowns for the football fans in our area, starting
with the Kansas City Chiefs as they lost to the
Chargers twenty seven twenty one, and they snapped all kinds
of streaks for them, including the one where they had
(05:38):
won seventeen consecutive one score games. They were kind of
fortunate this was a one score game. The Chargers really
dominated the proceedings. Justin Herbert was great. They put a
lot on him and he responded to it. The heroics
of Patrick Mahomes were the only thing that made this
a game disappointing effort for the Chiefs. And afterwards, I'll
(05:59):
start with this, Andy Reid talked about, you know, he
was visibly angry about the fact that his team came
out so flat. But my thought of it was, well, Andy,
they've done this a lot of times during those things
where they win seventeen games by one score, but you
just won the game, so it didn't really seem to
matter as much. But something that has become really kind
(06:22):
of a bugaboo for the chief slow starts finally bit them.
Speaker 6 (06:26):
Yeah, slow starts. And also Danny allowing teams to stay
in the game. I mean, that's seventeen straight win in
one score games is an incredible stat and credit the
Chiefs for being able to do that.
Speaker 7 (06:37):
But that's living on the edge way too much.
Speaker 6 (06:39):
You can talk about slow starts or you can say
just not doing the dominating work you need to do.
Either way, when you're the best team in football, which
they've been for five plus years now, you should have
games where you win by thirteen points, seventeen points. That
should be what every third week. But you just take
care of business and there's no doubt who's going to win.
So I don't know if it slow starts as much
(07:02):
as playing through the competition, or maybe the Chiefs just
aren't that much better than everybody else other than the
NBA type quality of saying.
Speaker 7 (07:10):
In the fourth quarter, we're going to go win this game.
Speaker 6 (07:13):
And that was a highlight of this game in my eyes, Danny,
because I cannot.
Speaker 7 (07:18):
Believe how good Patrick Mahomes played.
Speaker 6 (07:20):
I mean on a one to one hundred scale, he
played like one hundred and twenty seven. In my mind,
his team was not whatever ready or better, or the
shock of having Xavier Worthy injured and Rashi Rice not available.
I don't know, but the Chargers came out with purpose.
I thought, and I said publicly that I didn't think
(07:40):
the Chargers would be able to run the ball and
hurt the Chiefs. Everyone thought they're going to run and
try to run out the clock and show the power
of physical football. And I was going, no, Steve Spagnola
will take care of that. It's going to be justin
Herbert getting to work. Well, they jumped right to it.
Credit the Chargers. They said, we'll just start throwing the ball,
and they did it all night long.
Speaker 7 (07:58):
Herbert was really good, played good football.
Speaker 6 (08:00):
They played good red zone defense. They know what they
are and they've improved from last year. Give them credit.
But the game was still close, and I still think
there's a chance the Chiefs might have won that game
if they were giving the ball one more time. Because
of what Patrick Mahomes did. It was outrageous. He had
the highlight type of you know, the left handed pass
that you show from the Denver game from years ago.
(08:22):
He had stuff like that happened more than once. How
about running backwards and throwing the ball fifty yards downfield
like it's no big deal when it should have been
an in trouble, sack, all those kind of things, and
he turns it into a positive. Running the football, it
looked like he was running against fifth graders. Every time
he decided to run. It was like, no problem, you
don't run it in from ten yards out, Danny, Like
(08:44):
it's no big deal. This does not happen in a scramble.
Yet he did those things. So I really had highlighted
in my mind, even looking back to last year and
the year before, about how far that belief and his
excellence has brought the Chiefs because he was the only
thing that gave them a chance. And I still think
if they could add one stop and he could have
(09:06):
touched the ball one time within a touchdown in the game,
they might have come back and won that game. Which
is incredible because the Chargers look so much better than
the Chiefs except for the brilliance of Patrick Mahomes, and.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
It had to be matched. And justin Herbert was asked
to do a lot. They put a lot on his plate,
and he ate it. He was great. His quarterback rating
was one thirty one point seven. When they needed a
big run at the end of the game, he gave
it to them. He just did it all.
Speaker 6 (09:34):
He really did, and the run was the big thing,
because you wonder, is Justin Herbert ready to make the
plays at the end of the game, And maybe there's
a super big value to it, more than we could
ever imagine as we watch football unfold. It used to
be a sixty minute game. Maybe it's turned into the NBA,
and maybe it's who makes the plays down the stretch
(09:54):
and what's going to be a close game. I don't know,
but Charger fans would say they're not sure they believe
in Justin and Herbert in the critical situations. He protected
a football last year and hardly throwing interceptions. He bought
into the Jim harball system. He gave it a good
shot and he was a good quarterback, but no one
thought of him as a guy who was going to
make the clutch plays. That run at the end wasn't
(10:15):
just throwing the ball, having him tuck the ball and
go by the Chief's best defender, Hall of Famer Chris
Jones around the side.
Speaker 7 (10:23):
I mean that was a significant moment.
Speaker 6 (10:25):
I think to ice the game right there with the
ball in his hands, running the football. So I think
we're going to see a much bigger and tougher version
of the Chargers. Jim Harball was going to bring this.
I never doubted last year when we spoke Danny all
the time that Harball would get this team to where
they needed to be.
Speaker 7 (10:44):
He is a quarterback whisperer.
Speaker 6 (10:48):
I mean the fact that he got Alex Smith going.
You know, he gets guys fixed and better, and he
reaches out to where they are and brings them with
where they need to be to be winners and tough
and believe in themselves. He's done that with Justin Herbert
and the Chargers, but I thought it would take a
little while. This may be the coronation of Yep, they're ready.
(11:09):
They're ready to be primetime players. I think Herbert is.
His postgame interview Danny I thought was so impressive because
he was completely calm and not going to be baited
into being overly excited about winning a game or the
Chiefs like that was worth three wins.
Speaker 7 (11:24):
He didn't do that.
Speaker 6 (11:25):
He acted like a mature winning quarterback and said we're
one to zero and we got to get back to work,
and we're glad we want a division game. Past that,
if you wanted to hear any enthusiasm from justin Herbert.
It was only when he talked about his fellow teammates.
I think Harball's done it, Danny. I thought Herbert was
a talent, but just didn't you know, if you're the
(11:46):
Wizard of Oz, I didn't know if he had that
toughness or heart. And I think Harball is a perfect
antidote for him to now say we truly have another
superstar quarterback. Put him in those names like Lamar Jackson
and Josh Burrow. You know, we got some guys in
the AFC, and I never put Herbert in the same category.
Speaker 7 (12:06):
His talent was good.
Speaker 6 (12:07):
But I think maybe after this game, Danny, he may
be in that listing of who do you think the
best quarterback is in the NFL, and his name would
be mentioned in the top of five.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
I think it was a coming out party, and of
course they've had them before, and last night it was
Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. And what a remarkable Josh
Allen performance. Mahomesy in in the way he rallied his
team back, and you know, the Ravens made a couple
of mistakes that they shouldn't have made, obviously in the
big fumble, but Josh Allen probably quickly inserted himself as
(12:41):
the favorite in the MVP race.
Speaker 7 (12:44):
Yeah, that was incredible.
Speaker 6 (12:45):
I mean, if we just the comparing contrast we have
available to us of what Patrick Mahomes has done with
the Chiefs, I think with Andy Reid, Steve Spagnola, the organization,
Travis Kelcey, Chris Jones respect what the Chiefs have around
Patrick Mahomes so much more than what I do Buffalo
in my comparing contrast. Okay, so I think the Chiefs
(13:09):
have an advantage everywhere over the Bills, even though they've
been cool and fun games, the best of television. Right,
the Chiefs and the Bills are just magical with Jim
Nance and Tony Romo. It didn't get any better than that.
Whenever the playoffs regular season, they put on a show.
But my point here, Danny is I think Josh Allen
(13:31):
has a plow in the ground that's even deeper or
it's a much bigger issue by far than the Chiefs.
I don't think it's comparable at all. Who do I
believe in the Buffalo team, the defense, No, the head coach.
He's a nice guy. I like him, you know, But
this is Josh Allen one on ten, one on twenty whatever.
(13:54):
I mean, it's pretty amazing to think how well Patrick
Mahomes played. And I almost have to brag Josh Allan
up more. There's never been a game forty one to
forty in the history of the NFL. There's never been
a team that's getting two hundred and thirty five yards
rushing in a game and led in the second half
by fifteen points wherever it's ever lost a game. And
(14:16):
it just happened right before our eyes. So incredible. Lamar
Jackson's good. The Ravens are the most talented team in
the NFL. The Ravens should be winning Super Bowls, Danny.
What's missing? They lost what four or five regular season
games last year when they never should have. They they
won a game that they should have lost. Lamar's over
(14:37):
there about crying because he'd lost the game and then
they got lucky and won it going back to the
other direction in the last seconds.
Speaker 7 (14:44):
There's something missing.
Speaker 6 (14:45):
And we know playoff Lamar is not one to trust,
but even the regular season Baltimore is missing something because
that should be the best team in.
Speaker 7 (14:53):
Football right there.
Speaker 6 (14:54):
It's amazing that Buffalo came back and won. I can't
credit Josh Allen enough for for what he did in
the face of what he has to do. It's incredible
and so he deserves to be in the spotlight right
now because his team won. Mahomes team didn't win the
ball game, but incredible play.
Speaker 7 (15:12):
And I'll say this, Danny.
Speaker 6 (15:13):
You know I've been a critic of Week one football
in the National Football League. They don't try in the
preseason as much and things like that to ease their
way into the season. I think they tried a little
harder in the preseason this year. More players played like
Joe Burrow played a lot, et cetera. The play was
better on Week one. There were very few teams that
were bumbling around and looking like, ah, we're not quite
(15:35):
to our normal self. And locally, maybe the Chiefs are
one of those teams. They did go all the way
to Brazil, but I don't think that's the Chief's normal effort.
I think they'll be better in their next games. They
don't have to with Philadelphia coming up. But other than what,
Miami just looking awful, Detroit looking different, maybe a little shaky,
Chiefs maybe a little shaky. Generally, I got thirty teams
(15:57):
plus Danny, who played well, they have not everyone's played yet.
Speaker 7 (16:01):
So it's to be like twenty six teams.
Speaker 6 (16:03):
Twenty seven teams I thought played legitimate NFL football.
Speaker 7 (16:06):
So pat him on the back. That was a good
Week one performance.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
Well, real quickly, the last place Chiefs are taking on
the Eagles this week, and the worries would multiply drastically
if the Chiefs did not come up with a good
effort against the Eagles, and even a good effort might
not be enough.
Speaker 6 (16:25):
Yeah, this is intriguing, and this is dangerous in all
those words, because I do think every year is a
new year.
Speaker 7 (16:31):
I do think.
Speaker 6 (16:32):
Early season starts are important. You've heard me say that
for a long time, Danny. It's a little less in
the NFL right now, with a seventeen game schedule and
weeks off and things like that. It doesn't seem to
matter as much. But the Chiefs just have such a
tough road that it doesn't end. You say, well, if
you lose to Philadelphia, we'll be fine.
Speaker 7 (16:50):
We're the Chiefs. We're going to roll and be back.
You know, you played.
Speaker 6 (16:54):
Baltimore in a couple weeks. Yeah, that's a tough, tough
road right there. So, yeah, the Eagles game should be intriguing.
Will Arrowhead be on fire? Will this be treated as
the start of the season. You got to give the
Chiefs some room for air, Danny, going to Brazil, flying
ten plus hours, playing on a Friday night. You can say, hey,
there's no excuses in the NFL, but come on, these
(17:16):
are real human beings that did not seem like the
NFL opener. So hopefully they'll come back. The Eagles are
not as poor as they looked last week. Let's just
say that, Danny, if you want to go, I don't
think the Eagles are really that great. I think they'll
have a better performance. I'll just tell every bone out there.
You got to know that division games are harder for
(17:38):
teams A and Dallas is not intimidated by Philadelphia at all.
I had told a couple of friends before the game,
I thought Dallas would win that game.
Speaker 7 (17:45):
Danny.
Speaker 6 (17:46):
That's the Cowboys show up and play the Eagles on
the road, and they're not scared at all. And if
Ceedee Lamb would have caught a couple more balls, the
Cowboys would have won the game. I mean, their best
player on the team lost the game. For them, or
they would have won. Everyone would say, oh gosh, how
could that happen? Dallas is awful and Philadelphia's great, and
I'd say, no, don't count that against Philadelphia. This stuff
(18:07):
happens in the NFL, and the Cowboys aren't intimidated by
Philadelphia at all. So good news, bad news. The Eagles
may not be awesome every week. Jalen Hurts does not
play flawless football every game, even last year.
Speaker 7 (18:20):
Dandy.
Speaker 6 (18:20):
The Chiefs fans may think he plays elite every week
because they've seen two Super Bowls of his excellence, but
it's not like that he played very well last week.
Maybe he'll come off a little bit, but overall, the
Eagles should be a better team, which just makes it
a little more dangerous when the Eagles come to play
the Chiefs.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
Let's turn to college football now, and I mentioned there
were a lot of frowns around the smiles belonged to
Missouri fans as they win the border War against Kansas,
shrugging off a deficit early on and a scoop and
score and things like that, and really ended up to
me being clearly the better team, although the Jayhawks were
(18:58):
feisty and tough and actually went ahead early in the
fourth quarter. It was an entertaining game. Missouri had almost
six hundred yards of offense. That's got to be the
biggest concern for Kansas. Just your takeaways from the border War, Well, it.
Speaker 6 (19:15):
Was great theater on a weekend that didn't have a
lot of great games. And if you saw the game
unfold and seeing Kansas out to a twenty one to
six lead, you had new eyes turning onto the game, right.
I mean, people following on Twitter are going, hey, what's
going on around the country? WHOA Kansas is ahead of
(19:35):
Missouri twenty one to six.
Speaker 7 (19:37):
I've got to watch this.
Speaker 6 (19:39):
And so at the end of the day, you know,
a long touchdown run at the end when Roberts went
down the field, Jamal Roberts scored on that long run
made it seem like Missouri fans could celebrate and go
home with a good feel. And I think the confidence
from Missouri is just growing and growing.
Speaker 7 (19:59):
After the game we won, we had five hundred and ninety.
Speaker 6 (20:02):
Five yards total Offensebula Bo needed to play. Well, I thought,
you know, how is he gonna play? He answered to
call all those things. It sounds really good for Missouri
right now. But if he wouldn't have made that run,
the game was still close at that point. So if
Kansas a ton of credit for being feisty on a
day where their offense didn't work great and Jalen Daniels
(20:24):
made some mistakes right, it was a roller coaster of
a ride for football. There were a lot of things
like Pribula fumbling the ball and then bouncing right to
Kansas to get a scoop and score. You don't see
that kind of play that often. He did a great
job of bouncing back on one subject. But then later
(20:44):
Kansas fumbles and the Missouri player bats the ball, which
is illegal. That should not have been a safety. You
know what what the game might have looked like if
the officials would have caught that, Danny, you can't bat
the ball on a fumble. That should have been Kansas's ball.
Penalty on Missouri, not two points against them, two points
(21:05):
from Missouri and getting to football. I mean, there are
some things in there where the risk factor could have
changed even more so. Hand up to Missouri for doing
what they needed to do. You know, when I summarized
the game going in, I thought Missouri would win because
of the thickness of their offensive players over the Kansas defense,
their ability to move the line of scrimmage to run
(21:27):
the football well, they had two guys run for over
one hundred yards and it was a big differential in
the game. Jalen Daniels was the best player going into
the game, and a lot of pressure was on bo Tribula. Well,
he answered a call, bouncing back from that fumble and
making plays. But at the end of the day, again,
Missouri fans should feel happy about winning a dangerous game.
(21:49):
Don't get me wrong, you should always feel happy. But
the fact that they were four or five on fourth
down and most of those fourth downs were only tried
because their kicker issues. Missouri would have kicked goals. They
got rewarded with fourth down conversions that were crazy good
and not high percentage things.
Speaker 7 (22:08):
Danny.
Speaker 6 (22:09):
If they would have kicked field goals, this game would
have been close also, So at the end of the day,
Missouri is the better team. Missouri's quarterback has answered giant questions. Now,
remember you were the ones saying they hadn't played anybody yet,
so we know now Missouri is a good football team. Congratulations,
But man, the fourth down conversions mattered and Kansas, she
(22:30):
just realized they don't have a physically dominating team.
Speaker 7 (22:34):
The man.
Speaker 6 (22:35):
They're well coached, and Jalen Daniels gives you a chance
because he is feisty.
Speaker 7 (22:39):
In fact, he brought him back and.
Speaker 6 (22:40):
Had him in the lead in the fourth quarter or
something that k you should feel really good about. As
they take a week off and they're going to be
heavily favored any the start of their conference schedule. They're
at home against West Virginia and that West Virginia team
just lost to Ohio. They could play Pittsburgh this week.
That's a tough backyard brawl. I think Kansas should feel
very good about them.
Speaker 7 (22:59):
So after the non con, how.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
About the fact Kansas couldn't run the ball at all?
Is that a Missouri thing or a Kansas thing?
Speaker 6 (23:08):
I think it's a little bit of a Kansas thing.
Missouri's defense isn't quite as rock solid as it was
last year. And you know, Devin Neil, you lose that
running back, the best yardage producer in Kansas history. And
coach said, hey, Hi Shaw is going to be fine,
but it's hard. Last year they had both of them right.
As you design the plays the way Kansas designs their plays,
(23:32):
they should find effectiveness in the running game if there's
not some issues. I wonder about their offensive line. I
think Jalen Daniels, if you go back to the present
State game, I thought he ran around like Patrick Mahomes
and carried too much of a load. I think I
mentioned that to you, Danny. So the offensive line has
some issues. Remember, the play calling is different. You know,
Cole Nicky's not here anymore. That's two years ago. So
(23:55):
their design of plays usually give them a chance to
run the ball no matter who the defense is. So
why we look at internally at Kansas to say, if
we lost a little bit of our magic with Devin
Neil not there, the offensive line isn't really in sync,
and are they calling the perfect place. Just because Sambrowski
has been around the program forever doesn't mean he knows
how to call the magical plays or draw him up
(24:17):
the same way as guys before him did.
Speaker 7 (24:19):
So I would look to.
Speaker 6 (24:20):
Kansas and say, is this going to be an issue?
Is the running game going to be somewhat of a concern?
Therefore they lean on the pass. They can do that,
But Kansas the last three or four years had both going.
So I'm not ready to completely credit Missouri's defense on
this yet, but they are an SEC defense, They're on
the road, those kind of things. But I think it's
(24:42):
worth answering because I thought Kansas would move the ball
better Danny, I really did. I thought Missouri would be
holding their breath with Kansas driving the ball up and
down the field. And give Missouri credit that they stuffed
the running game, which made it a little bit easier
to go against Daniels.
Speaker 2 (24:58):
Well, there's big issues in Manhattan, to the point where
I think there was a little bit of psychology after
the game with Chris Climban talking about how he was
proud of his team. They're one crazy good drive at
the end of the North Dakota game from being zero
to three. Army's tough to play. We knew they were disciplined.
They were able to play sort of high school football.
Speaker 7 (25:18):
Really.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
They went forward on every fourth down they had an
opportunity to They ran the ball effectively, but they only
averaged three point seven yards per carry. They drove it down.
It just seemed like they were relentlessly unable to be
stopped at certain times and they had the ball twice
as many plays.
Speaker 6 (25:38):
Yeah, case A and only snapped forty three plays, and
until the last possession that started just above the two
minute time outing the fourth quarter, case A ran four
plays in the third quarter. Now there's a kickoff return
for a touchdown, and then there was a kickoff by
Army that bounced off at Case State and ended up
going back to Army. So there's some reasons. But still
(25:59):
they had six possessions on the day. Even if those
two events would not have happened on the kickoffs, Danny,
it was only an eight possession game going in. I said,
by far the number one key when I said keys
to the game, Danny. You know you have those sponsored
segments right before the games. Yeah, I said keys to
(26:20):
the game value every possession. Army only allows less than
fifty eight plays per game by opponents over the last
ten years, fewest in the nation. You better be good
on middle run defense because the quarterback at Army twelve
of the last fifteen years res rushed for twelve over
(26:40):
the last fifteen games is rushed for over one hundred yards.
Speaker 7 (26:43):
And you better be.
Speaker 6 (26:44):
Good on third down because they're going to go for
fourth down. Well, welcome to what I was talking about,
but Army had one drive right before the half that
was just incredible. They were down thirteen to nothing, and
in Case State had scored on three four possessions, Army
hadn't moved the ball. Can say what Army does. It's
kind of cute, but it didn't gonna work. Case State
led thirteen to nothing, and unbelievably, they ran sixteen plays
(27:07):
in two minutes and twenty five seconds. Danny a sixteen
play drive and they got the two point conversion man
a two point, got a touchdown on a two yard
pass on fourth down. And Jeff Mounkin is very realistic,
a great coach at Army, and he said, if I
had to kick the field goal KSE State probably would
have won the game because thirteen and three, thirteen to
three would not have done it. And if we'd have
(27:29):
missed that, we probably just wouldn't have won the game.
We had to bet on that fourth down play, but
as soon as we scored and it was thirteen to seven,
it was completely different. And he was exactly right, because
after that it turned into an Army game. They controlled
it and Case State is looking around each of the
players who played probably twenty guys Danny easily rotate on
(27:52):
ky State's defense. I don't think they got worn down
that much because they had many guys.
Speaker 7 (27:57):
Coming in there.
Speaker 6 (27:58):
I don't think any of them look a mirror and go, yeah,
I totally screwed this up. You know, I shouldn't have
made that mistake. There weren't that many mistakes. Army moved
like you said high school or fourth grade football. They
had no one outside the tight ends. They had double
tight and all their running backs were inside, not on
a wing. Danny inside of there so they could block
(28:20):
for quarterback run. He would take the snap, shuffle a
little bit to his left or right, and let two
of those running backs run in front of him and
just plow ahead, you know, kind of tush push type
of mentality, and then he would just maneuver his way.
He's a good runner, physically strong, and he would get
his three yards or four yards, and they just keep
doing it and doing it, and I don't think there's
(28:41):
any defender who's going, oh man, I just got physically whipped.
Oh I messed up on this read. There's only one
bad play, a half back pass by Army that moves
the ball fifty two yards downfield. So it's really a
crazy type of game, Danny, because the whole idea of
Case State being a football team is they're one and
two for the first time since two thousand and nine.
(29:03):
They've not experienced anything like this, And like you said,
they were on the edge of the cliff of being
zero to three when you think about that North Dakota game.
Yet they also were head to head and could have
beat Iowa State.
Speaker 7 (29:16):
What is it?
Speaker 6 (29:17):
But you know, if you don't win, you don't get confirmation.
So outside the program, the questions are giant, the displeasure
is big, the unhappiness, et cetera. And like you mentioned,
coach Clement's really just talking to his guys saying, hey,
let's stick together. We really didn't do anything wrong in
(29:38):
this game and we lost. It still counts, but you
gotta flush it. You're not going to play a team
like Army again, and you're not gonna play Iowa State
in Dublin again. Let's get on with it. But it
doesn't ease up to any six day turnaround. And you
know how good Arizona's been playing so far. Wow, they
are And because Case State beat them, I think it
(30:00):
was thirty one to seven last year. It's gonna be
hard for KSE State's players to not go, oh, they're
kind of soft pac twelve ish right, and you know what,
the players down in Arizona going to think, let's showcase State.
Speaker 7 (30:13):
What we can be like, let's turn this thing around.
So it's going to be a.
Speaker 6 (30:16):
Hard, hard game for KSE State on Friday night.
Speaker 2 (30:19):

Welcome back.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
Well for the Kansas City Royals, it kind of looks
at the way you look at it depends on whether
you're a glass half full or half empty type of person.
I guess the Royals had a homestand and that really
should have been better. They had a four and five
home stand. They didn't play particularly strong opposition in the
last two series. They only went four and five, but
(34:11):
there's still two games out. Certainly they could have perhaps
with a strong homestand be tied for the wild card
ahead right now, but they're still right in the mix.
That's the good way to look at it. Five to
one was the count on Sunday out at the ballpark.
Beautiful crowd of over twenty six thousand, lovely day to
watch baseball, only the first Sunday in a while where
you could sit in the sun splashed seats and not cook.
(34:34):
But the fans did not see the Royals offense cook
a little bit of noise in the late innings, but
they couldn't get the big hit, and they lose it
by account of finally five to one, and that means
that they head on the road for a tough road
trip to Cleveland and Philadelphia, still in the mix two
games out. We'll go look at the standings here in
a minute. And besides Saturday night, the Royals had only
(34:58):
three hits with runners in scoring position the entire homestand
that was a big part of it. It's a stat
that I think is overdone a bit. I mean, yes,
it's important, but basically it's important to get hits kind
of any time, and especially it's important to hit home runs.
And that's basically what won the game for the Twins
on Sunday, and the Royals have nineteen games left now.
(35:21):
They probably have to win at least twelve of those.
I would say, of course, it depends on who they play.
The teams that they're chasing have either gotten hot gotten
cold in between, and so it's really up to the Royals,
and they still have the opportunity. And here we are
on September eighth, and they're in the Pennant Race and
that's a good thing. And they were in the playoffs
last year. So being a Royals fan is a good
(35:44):
thing these days, and that's a thing they couldn't say
at all in the early twenty twenties, that's for sure.
So the Royals head out on the road. Vinnie Pasquentino
had a nice RBI hit, but he also made it
out with the bases loaded. He knows that it wasn't
good enough on Sunday, but all is still in front
of the Royals as they head to Cleveland.
Speaker 9 (36:04):
Did a nice shop locating the stuff, get keeping us
off balanced. He pitched so hots off of him. He
did a nice job keeping us, keeping us where we
were today.
Speaker 10 (36:14):
When you look at business homestanding in general, how would
you just assess how you guys played and is there
any momentum you can glean going into on the road
to Cleveland In Philadelphia.
Speaker 9 (36:24):
I don't know what our record was or anything. I
just know that we're still in this fight. So we're
gonna show up ready to go tomorrow. You know, we
talked about momentum a lot, like is it real?
Speaker 3 (36:35):
Is it not?
Speaker 9 (36:36):
Whatever it is, what we know is we have a
game tomorrow in Cleveland, and we're gonna be ready for it.
Speaker 3 (36:39):
So that's all we're worried about right now.
Speaker 10 (36:41):
We talked about being in the fight, just the resiliency
of this team. How much confidence does that give you
knowing that you guys can keep going to the end
and be where you want to be.
Speaker 9 (36:50):
Yeah, it gives us a lot of confidence. Today was
a Today was about executing, which we didn't do, but
we had opportunities for it. So if you don't have
guys out there, there's nothing to executor, not execute, So
you got to try to try to find a positive
from it that we had guys out there. So had
guys out there, left them out there today, but you know,
turn this thing around, get after tomorrow, talk.
Speaker 2 (37:10):
About the sense of excitement whatever. When you're going head
to head with teams like the Guardians and teams that
you they're in the fight too.
Speaker 3 (37:17):
Yeah, it's exciting. That's who.
Speaker 9 (37:20):
That's who, that's who you want to be playing. So
big four game set here, I think what they I
don't know what they did today?
Speaker 3 (37:29):
They won? Yeah, big series.
Speaker 9 (37:32):
They're right behind us, right, so we just kind of
play good, go go in there, have a nice series
and see what happens. But it's all starts with them
with tomorrow, and that's what we're focused on.
Speaker 2 (37:43):
Four night games, early evening baseball as far as here
is concerned. Five forty starts across the board as the
Royals and the Guardians. Basically, this series is gonna hurt
no matter what, unless well, it's going to hurt somebody.
But even if the team split the series, that wouldn't
be good for either one of them either. So we'll
see what happens. Is the Royals and the Guardians go
(38:03):
at it in Cleveland over the next few days, and
they do so in a baseball atmosphere where a lot
of things are kind of decided and a few things
are kind of not And that's a good thing for
the Royals. The American League East looked like it was
going to be decided early this year as the Yankees
ran out to a huge lead and it looked like
the Blue Jays were going to run away and hide
(38:24):
in the East. Well, now it's a real fight as
the Blue Jays have stabilized a bit. They've only split
their last ten games, and the Yankees have gotten hot
and they're two games back in the East. Red Sox
they are only three and a half games back, and
the Rays have gotten hot and that's kept them in
the wildcard races. They're one of those teams in the
wildcard mix that we'll talk about here in a second.
(38:45):
And the Orioles bringing up the rear. They've been pesky
of late, beating some teams and causing some problems, but
they'll still be the last place team. The Tigers haven't
played well of late, but they don't have to. There's
still eight and a half games up on the Royals.
Twenty games over five hundred, still a good season. They's
to kind of try to find tune for the playoffs.
And the Guardians found some form. They've won three in
(39:07):
a row. They won six of their last ten and
that has put them back in position, just a half
game behind the Royals and the wildcard race. The Twins
are in the tank, but they provided a little opposition
on Sunday. Unfortunately, in the White Sox are won offully.
A couple teams in baseball already eliminated from the playoffs.
Twenty seven games behind fifty five wins on the season,
(39:29):
they'd have to fight hard to not lose one hundred,
but they've still got a chance to not lose one hundred,
and after what they did last year, that'd be pretty good.
Somebody's going to win the American League West, but nobody
seems to want to right now. Houston has a two
and a half game lead over Seattle, and both of
those teams have lost six of their last ten. Texas
has started to play well and they've gone seven out
of ten and they are right there as far as
(39:50):
the wild card is concerned, just a shade behind the
Mariners and a bit ahead of the Royals and the Angels.
They provide a tough opposition for the Royals, but overall
a disappointing season for them, and the Athletics have played
well for quite a while now and have had a
representative season for them and a lot of great young talent.
They are an interesting bunch, to say the least. In
(40:13):
the National League, the Phillies have the East all wrapped up.
The Mets sites are on the wild card and then
pretty solid position right now as far as that is concerned.
They are nine games over five hundred. The Giants are
the next team up. We'll check the wild card here
in the second Miami, Atlanta and Washington all distant followers
(40:34):
in the National League East. The Brewers are just amazing.
They just win and win and win and win. Their
thirty four games over five hundred. They're a fantastic story.
Milwaukee a great baseball town and they're having a blast
this summer. Cups fans are having a pretty good time too.
They're going to be in the wild card and haven't
played great for a while here, but they're still nineteen
(40:55):
games over five hundred. The Reds, the Cardinals, the Giants
all kind of sort of kind of in that wildcard
mix that we'll talk about here in a second. And
the Dodgers and the Padres battling is I don't know
if they're battling to win the West They've each lost
seven of their last ten, and that puts the Dodgers
one game behind, the one game ahead of the Padres
(41:18):
in the standings Giants in the wildcard mix. Diamondbacks have
played well of late to get themselves in to that,
and the Rockies have already lost one hundred games on
the season as they limp to the finish line. Wildcard
looks like this in both leagues. The Yankees and the
Red Sox look like they're pretty well in I mean
(41:40):
not completely. The Red Sox are only three and a
half clear, The Mariners have the last wildcard spot. The
Rangers are a game and a half back, the Rolls
are two back, the Guardians are two and a half pack,
the rayser four back. So those teams.
Speaker 7 (41:53):
All in the mix. Tough for the Rays.
Speaker 2 (41:56):
I mean it's gonna be tough for any of those
teams to chase down the Mariners. That the Mariners play
the way they should, They made good moves at the break,
they should be playing better, but still they play, and
they have a fairly easy schedule as well down the stretch,
So still a lot of work to do for the chasers,
but they do have an opportunity in the National League.
The Cubs will definitely be a wild card team unless
(42:18):
they lose about every game, and the Padres have a
pretty good hold on that second spot. The Mets have
the third spot in the wild card and they would
have to really stumble where somebody would have to get
really hot because the Giants are four games back and
the Reds are four games back. Both those teams only
a game over five hundred. Diamondbacks and Cardinals are at
(42:39):
five hundred, so that, I guess technically keeps you in
the mix in baseball as we head down the stretch,
and yes, Kansas City Royals are still part of that picture.
Tennis was a big deal in my household over the
last couple of weeks, and the final was kind of
anti climactic. There was a lot of exciting tennis, but
(43:00):
in the end, it came down to what's inevitable these days,
and that's that Janick Center and Carlos Alcaraz will play
in the final. It's the eighth consecutive final that they've
played in, or eighth consecutive final that one of them
has won, and eighth major in a row for either
In this time around, it was Alcaraz he wins in
four sets. He takes over the number one spot in
(43:21):
the world, and he did it in dominating fashion. The
set he lost the second set to Center yesterday was
the only set that he lost in the entire tournament.
Got this new buzz cut and new lean look, and
it certainly has provided fantastic tennis, and he was just
too much for Centner, who seemed to be fighting health
(43:42):
problems late in the tournament. He definitely had a stomach
bug in the semifinal and maybe it was lingering afterwards.
His serve just wasn't quite as good as it is
and I don't know if even extra sharp Center, you know,
he's just not quite I mean, it's just ridiculous to
say when somebody's this good, but Alcaraz is just that
little tick better. And he is now number one in
the world, and he played just a tick better in
(44:04):
the final and a very exciting US Open, I mean,
a different kind of atmosphere. It's so funny to see
it come consecutively, just about a month and a little
bit longer after Wimbledon, where decorum and all those things
are a big part of the atmosphere. The exact opposite
of that it's real New York at the US Open,
(44:26):
and it was a very cool and interesting Open. But
Alcaaz rules the roost. He's a fun guy. He seems
to enjoy the limelight. He's a showman. It's just cool.
It's a cool thing, and he's a deserved champion. And
now we'll wait for the Australian Open and twenty twenty
six to see if anything changes as far as the
(44:47):
dominance in tennis right now for the big two in
men's tennis, well, the big one in women's soccer right
now the professional ranks is the Kansas City Current. They
haven't given up a goal and an age. They won
again on Saturday, two to nothing. They are in first
place by a mile. They basically are just kind of
(45:07):
cooling their heels until the playoffs and entertaining sellout crowds
and doing all the great things that they've done during
the course of the entire summertime, which has made things really,
really cool and interesting for Kansas City and creates the
kind of atmosphere that gets everybody ready for the World Cup,
which is basically only a year away now. So you
(45:28):
start to pay attention to the US men's national team
and so on and so forth, and probably don't pay
as much attention to Sporting Kansas City. It's been a
lackluster summer. There's going to be all kinds of changes
in the off season, and there need to be. They're
going to name a new sporting director or Director of
Soccer Operations. I think is the actual title DS. I
(45:50):
believe is what it is, and you can't say that
it something that isn't needed. Another loss at home, another
lead squandered. They've given up more more goals than any
team in the league by far, almost sixty goals allowed
so far in the season. And they led this one
one to nothing against Austin. Austin came back, scored one
to tie just before halftime, scored another one late in
(46:11):
the game to win, and they're limping toward the finish.
They're eight points out of the playoffs. Basically, even if
they won all the rest of their games, it might
not be enough for them to get into the playoffs,
but they'd like to finish strong just for pride. Doesn't
look like Kerry Savagnin has maybe made the case to
be the full time coach after being the interim. But
we'll have to see what all the shakeups at Sporting
(46:34):
Kansas City look like as the Kansas City Current have
taken the soccer limelight in Kansas City. And I just
concluded rewatching the finish of the Irish Open, and that's
a golf tournament, by the way, and it was an
unbelievable finish. Rory McElroy was well behind heading into the
(46:54):
final round, but within reach, and he played well, but
he still looked like he was going to lose to Lagergren,
an outsider from Sweden, and he had a two shot
lead after he birdied the eighteenth hole. Seventeen under. Rory
came to the eighteenth holl he had to make an eagle.
Speaker 3 (47:14):
He did.
Speaker 2 (47:14):
He sank about a twenty five foot putt that had
thousands of Irish men and women delirious. And then on
the third playoff hole, after both of the golfers birdied
the playoff hole a par five in each of the
first two times around, larger Gren hit the ball in
the water, Rory made birdie.
Speaker 3 (47:34):
He won.
Speaker 2 (47:35):
A fantastic story, a lot of good stories for europeting
into the Ryder Club. The United States has home advantage,
but there may be more talent on the European side.
That is going to be one heck of a show,
and a fall series golf event on the PGA Tour
will get a lot of attention this week because out
in Napa, California, ten of the US Ryder Cup players
(47:57):
are playing to keep sharp, so a tournament, that tournament
gets an incredible boost. Ordinarily none of these players would
be playing in this tournament, but that tournament out in California,
we'll have a lot of attention on it now as
those players warm up for the Ryder Cup at Bethpage
in just a couple of weeks down the road. Very
exciting week for me. I'm headed home to see my
(48:19):
mom for a little bit, bookending a trip to upstate
New York to go to a reunion of my old
radio station. I'm going to visit Cooperstown, New York, which
is going to be very cool, and all kinds of
great stuff that will be going on for me this week,
including reconcilable differences on Wednesday, a cool profile on Friday,
(48:39):
We've got thirsty Thursdays this week. It's all on the plate.
Thanks to Stan Weber for always bringing the great insights
as far as football is concerned, and I'll wrap it
up for this time around Monday Musings Danny and Friends
