I slutningen af 2. verdenskrig skete der noget, som ikke burde kunne lade sig gøre. Mellem 17.500 og 20.000 fanger blev kørt ud af koncentrationslejrene i det nazistiske Tyskland. Den mest kendte del af operationen bestod af en masse hvide busser med røde kors og dannebrog på side og tag, som blev ledt af den svenske greve Folke Bernadotte, der var vicepræsident i det svenske Røde Kors. Men ideen til aktionen og initiativet kom fra dansk side - og bestod af rutebiler, fiskebiler, motorcykler og personbiler. Vi skal tilbage til februar 1944. Til København, hvor en lille fiskekutter stævner ud af Københavns Havn i den kølige morgenvind, med den initiativrige dansker Carl Hammerich ombord. Med sig har han en dristig plan, der skal redde fanger ud af koncentrationslejrene.

The Brothers Ortiz is the story of two brothers–both successful, but in very different ways.
