Speaker 1 (00:15):
Hello, when Welcome to Deep Blue Sea the Podcast. I
am Mark. I wish Captain Ron was in Jurassic World Rebirth.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Hoffmeyer, I'm Jay Rogue, Snickers Rapper Cluet, welcome you on
this show.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Final Destination nonsense.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
And it's Snickers as well, my least favorite chocolate bar
because it has peanuts in it, So I'm glad. I
really I hate peanuts, so's I'm not let just hate him,
so I like that. That's the villain of this film
is Peanut Rapper. This is DBC the Podcast. On this show,
we've been to the entire Deep Cie seen by scene
do it again, but not today. Today we're heading back
to our a couple of years, I think, for our
(00:53):
Jurassic Park aquatic series because there's a new one out,
Jurassic World Rebirth hit cinemas very recently. It's got a
whole bunch of aquatic scenes in it, so we're gonna
talk about them now. This consider this a spoiler episode
if you if you've seen the film, it's great. If
you haven't seen the film, go see the film. We
loved it. But there's two but one of them is
(01:14):
like very long aquatic scenes. So really three, you have
the Moses Saw taken out the Delgado family yacht. Yeah,
they have the the Essex, which is herschel Ali's Duncan
Kincaid's boat. Great name taking on the mos Saw and
it's spiney Saw, Henchman, Hench Hench Dinos. And then you
(01:37):
have the raft scene with the del Gado family being
chased by t Rex on a fairly flimsy raft.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
There's some great names in this movie, by the way,
Zora Bennett Covert Operation, mercenary, like Duncan King Kid Like
I feel like that's a that's gotta be a reference
to something, but I feel like an angry police chief.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
It's like where's Yeah, I love that bad guy name,
but I like the ed Screen's character is Bobby at Water,
which is what he does. Yehs at Water and he
bobs probably after that for a while.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Yeah. The stars of Hitman, Agent forty seven and Transporter
Refueled Don't have It, don't don't do great in this movie.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Who I'm It's is a spoiler?
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Writer? Is this spoiler and non spoiler?
Speaker 2 (02:28):
Where spoilers? Okay, Group of Friend and Eds Green are
the bad guys because there's a point where they can
go and save some kids, and they're like, oh maybe later,
as you know, they're the bad guys.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
And then doctor Henry Loomis, which I love, you know,
like I like that Rupert friend is his name is Martin.
You just feel like he's a bad guy because of
that Martin Krebs.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
Grips is a bad guy name.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Yeah, I was researching this film and yeah that like
the first third of this movie is water. It's there's
just a lot of boat, a lot of boat in
this movie. And I don't I couldn't have been happier.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Yeah, me too. So I love, like just the film
as a whole. I already enjoyed it. It's a really
straightforward plot of like we need to go over to
day Island and get blood from the hearts of three
of these different animals, the the big ones, one at sea,
one in the land, one on the air, and then
we come back again and they get there and they
they do that and people die along the way. But yes,
(03:27):
but they run into the Delgatto family just to had
a little like cut back from one scene to another
kind of scene.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
There's there's three things I really liked about this movie.
One it's like like you said, it's simple. Hey, Like
in the beginning, he goes and finds Zora. They stand
by a river, which I kind of love, or like
wherever they are, like the water water scene, it's like, hey,
I need to go to this island. We need to
get this guy, likable dude, Henry Loomis. Now, we're just
gonna take a boat and go there and collect blood samples,
(03:56):
you know from Sea Earth Air. I love that. Super easy. Two.
The dinosaurs in this movie aren't antagonists. Even the distortis
w Rex. Distortis Rex just looked in pain and it
looks like the rank it's the rank Coorsaurus what you
named it?
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Sure is.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
But like maybe the mutidon are they're kind of jerks,
but they're hungry like that. That's it. Like they're not jerks,
they're just they're the raptors in this movie, and they
are are are very hungry.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
So all the dinosaurs in this film are just being creatures.
You see, Like the Moses and Sponsors, they're they're hunting.
They don't want they do the hunting. The titanosauruses they're
they're in love. There's romance, like the Quetzkatle is protecting
it's young, it's depending with the nest. The t rex
(04:45):
is asleep, you sleepy Rex, and then.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
It's bummed that it missed its food.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
It's just ah, there's no there's no like Jurassic Park three.
The spin a sure hunting them from the start of
the film to the end of it. It's none of
the silly.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
My brother wrote an article about how the Spinus horse
was a total jerk for movies Soon Clicks and he
broke down all he broke down all the time stamps.
He's like this thing, there's so much food on that island.
But it's like it's like the shallow shark essentially just
a jerk, just a jerk. Yeah, and so like, yeah,
I like the spinous horse on this They're just part
of a food gang. Like hey, work with us, it's
(05:25):
easier to get food copy that. Like they're just they're
just eating and I dig it, Like I like. I
like that. The mutasaurus too, is slow and it's just
in pain and it's big and there's nothing evil or
antagonistic or menacing about it. It just looks like rank
or and it has a rank wrep eating scene, which
is amazing.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
I will qual alms from Total Rico.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
Which yeah, yeah, and it doesn't have three boobs, which
is good, but they and I guess they were mutated
too from all the radiation. Yeah, but and they're kind
of isolated. All right, never mind, so I've mentioned too.
And then the third is I like the characters in
(06:10):
the first one. You love the characters, and the second one,
I don't you have more. You have good actors, right,
I mean you have, but I don't aside from Ian Malcolm,
they're just there's nothing like Pete Postaway's great, but there's
really nothing about his character.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
I mean.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
And the third one, yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Great, great way hunted kind of thing.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
Yeah, get out in the Jurassic World. Nah, Jurassic World,
Falling Kingdom. No Jurassic World Dominion, Uh huh. This but
in this one, like Scarlett Johansson wanted to be in
this one. She fought to be in this one. Bailey
played clarinet on the soundtrack for this. He was so
(06:51):
happy to be in this. Like Mahershaw, Ali was like,
it's not Blade and I can this thing. Got ready
in three months. I could go shoot this and hang
out and I'm done, get a fun paycheck. Actually, he
we'll talk about this at the very end. About his character.
You know, the rest of the cast, you have time
with them, you like them. They're like Zora Bennett has
a life, you know, she's just you know, Mersha Ali
(07:13):
has a life. I think Jonathan Bailey he has more
wrinkles to him. Also, what Manuel Garcia Ruffel has. Reuben
Delgado like the Delgados. I like even Xavier. He comes
across as kind of a a lazy guy, but then
he jumps into the water to save his girlfriend and
he has that really funny peen scene.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
When we first meet Xavier, I'm like, oh, this is
this is the worst character ever written anything ever. I
hate him so much. But the way I ebbed and
flowed with this character across the whole of the film, well,
I hate this guy. And then yeah, he jumps in
to save not Isabella, the other one, Teresa jumps into
save Teresa. And then yeah, the pein scene. And then
(07:54):
when manuelger s Rufo like gets him a side later
and it's like I was wrong about you, and I
just wanted to say, no, you're right, I'm lazy as hell.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
I kept thinking, like I love this guy. Yeah, he's awful,
but I hate I love him.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
And that's what a straightforward plot does, though, is it's
so easy to follow. You can just spend time with
the characters. Remember in Jurassic Park when they're just sleeping
in the tree and they're snot like, there's moments to
just enjoy the characters. And like, you know, even Isabella,
the youngest daughter, she's little so she can go through things,
and she has the toy dinosaur that they're going to
sell a lot of and Teresa just wants revenge.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
The toy dinosaurs. Is My only problem with the film
is I didn't care for Dolores. She yeah, doesn't do anything.
There's no real characters. It's just a toy you can say.
It's just like, hey, I think we can sell.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
Yeah, it's unnecessary, totally unnecessary. But yeah, I've been reading
some reviews about this movie. One star. I hated it.
It sucks and I'm just thinking, what did they wait?
The first one was great? None of them are as
good and that's not a good criteria for grading, Like
you can't grade the seventh film and a sequel to
an all literal, all time classic. And that's not even hyperbole.
(09:08):
That is Jurassic Park is an all time classic that
molded and shaped lives, filmmakers, cinema. And then you watch
Drassic World Rebirth and you go, it wasn't as good
as Jurassic Park. Bro Like nothing, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
You must have a very disappointed life if that's what
you compare everything against his Jurassic block.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
Like Spielberg made a sequel, Spielberg and it wasn't as good.
So it's crazy. This movie takes you in an island.
There's some really fun bits. It's straightforward and everyone's like
doesn't need to exist, yes, And and you know, Gareth
Edwards shot the hell out of this movie. There are
some gorgeous wide shots. There's a shot on the river
(09:53):
where the t Rex wakes up and the Delgado's on
one side and then the t Rex. It's a gorgeous
wide shot and it looks wonderful. And these dinosaurs have scale.
I'm not talking about like one eight five to one
aspect ratio scale, but you can feel their height, you
can feel them like whenever the rank orsaurus walked, you
felt it and that has been missing. And and I
(10:16):
think Gareth Edwards and David Kapp, like the dinosaurs in
this one. They don't murder them with a volcano, thank you, because.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
We have there's so many kinds of dinosaur here. Like
I said, there's no big bad chasing them. It's episodics.
They're just trying to show as many different kinds of
dinosaurs as possible. They go of it. It's like we
can't Delafosaurus cameo. I think it's gonna take out Theresa,
but didn't get scared off by the t.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
Rights the raptors. I think the raptor bit I laughed
so hard. These raptors are about to kill Xavier, and
then the mutodon just comes doun and fights them in
an It's funny and it's well shot, and it's not
the most expensive movie you ever made, and Edwards really
(11:01):
gave it scale and it's not long, so it's on
a summer on a summer blockbuster scale. Knowing that this
is the seventh movie in a franchise released in July
to entertain audiences who want to eat popcorn and see
dinosaur carnage, this movie rules.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
Yeah, agreed, I don't. There's nothing else I want from it.
It did everything I wanted it to do, you know, like, yeah,
there's No, Raptors are always great parts this franchise, but
as any brief seen in it. But that's fine. We've
seen them in other films. Like we've had raptors before
like this, I don't know, awesome. Yeah, I don't get
(11:42):
the complaints people have. Like friends of the show, Justin
got he was looking forward to go and see it,
and he gave me his one word review of yuck.
That's what he said.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
People are going into it wanting to hate it. I'm
telling you that, like they just they want to hate it.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Yeah, and like why, I don't understand why. I didn't
expect you to be as good as Drassic Puck. It wasn't.
But I still had a great time with it. I
had a truly awful viewing experience. Just people, so many
people like running around screaming and coming up up and
down the aisles and flashlights on and phones on. But
I still had a great time with the film.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
Yeah, that bros next to me. This guy's on his
phone for like eighty ninety percent of it, and at
the end of he's like, what is this movie even about?
Like he didn't I want to die inside? But also too,
this movie you understand why they keep going on with
their mission so you have you know, Loomis Is clearly
just wants money. No, no, I'm sorry, Krebs just wants money.
(12:44):
He's there for the pharmaceuticals. They're gonna make trillions on it.
But Bailey and you know Zora and even uh mahershaw
a Lee Duncan who lost the child, I think they're
kind of thinking about, hey, we already like the first
Mosesaurus was hard to get, but they got it. They
got the Gigantosaurus or Titanosaurus. Yeah, yeah, yeah, they got
(13:05):
they got that Titanosaurus. And so they're like, all right,
let's just go get the other one. Let's just go
try and then if anything, we can just put this
open source and help out lives. So instead like they
could have just ducked out. But also I think Loomis
and them we're thinking like, hey, this could be good,
Like we are here, this could be a good thing.
(13:26):
So there's just I don't know, these these people did
a lot of work and they to make a simple
story and I don't I don't know.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
It's it's very deep. Bosy. Yes, yeah, we're's genterly modified
animals that don't really need to be part of the plot,
I guess, but yeah, uh, and it's you know, getting
blood from getting biological stuff from animals to try and
cure disease. So it's not how Zimeo's it's hot disease.
And but then we we do deal more with the
(13:57):
big farmer of it, with and of just trying to
get rich off of though, and and lomis not wanting to,
so it's it's good shocking cribs and who could have
seen that eaten.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
By the rank corsaurus. And they don't kill the rancor
Asaurus either. This isn't Yeah, the rank just just a
total a quatto asaurus, right, it's a mutant. Yeah. And
you know what's kind of cool is it's not a
jerk like the spinosaurus. It's not then Dominius Rex, Who's
(14:33):
who's a legit jerk? It's just a j Indo raptors,
that stupid thing from Fallen Kingdom. I mean, I love
t Rex dinosaur. That thing's awesome, but you have they're
just there. And I have a lot of people who
don't want to watch it because they're like more mutated dinosaurs.
I'm so sick of them. But this one's much more
(14:55):
of a Jurassic Park Lost World than it is he
any of the other one ones.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Yeah, it's ranking the franchise. It's third for me after
those first two. And I think it's in competition with
the Lost World, just because Lost What is better for
me just gonna have so much nostalgia tied to it,
So I don't think it's gonna quite be topped. But
if you're comparing quality of the film, it's probably alongside
that one.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
And I mean, listen, no one has the charisma of
good old Jeff Goldbloom in that movie, like he's just
I mean the tall Grass scene, the scene where the
raptor jumps through the window. There's some wonderful moments, but
also there's some very grating moments, like you know, doctor Sarah,
just I'm fine, I'm okay, you can no dinosaurs are
gonna kill me. And then hey, we can bring this
(15:43):
t rex into this thing and get this cool guy
killed and it's you know, you know what I learned? Though?
Did I tell you the story about Eddie?
Speaker 2 (15:50):
So I'm Richard Schiff's character.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
Yeah, I found a really an interview because I'm working
on a book slowly and I'm writing about Who Got
It Worst? I'm got the Who Got It Worst Hall
of Fame and Eddie's one of them. And so Spielberg
came up to Richard Schiff one day and went, hey, man,
I love your character. I'm gonna keep him alive. And
he's like, nah, dude, I need a death. I need
to get killed. Let's do an epic death. And he
went home that night and he told his wife, and
(16:14):
his wife's like, yo, you could make more money if
you stayed alive. You could be in this entire movie.
And he oh, trap. So the next day he went
home or went to set, was a Stephen, maybe I
should live, and Steven's like, no, I got a great
scene to get murdered, and you're a hero. So everyone
hates that scene, but it's because Richard Schiff. It's because
Richard Schiff. Everyone's like, Eddie got it bad, but Richard
(16:36):
Schiff wanted that. So I don't know, I just think
that's interesting. But I I just had to spend a
I just had to spend a lot of time on it,
and I I don't know. The ups and downs are
higher for Lost World, and I guess rebirth displays on
a nice straight line with a few peaks. There's no
(16:57):
big downs for me, if that makes sense.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
Yeah. Like, okay, so the water scenes. Do you have
a favorite of the water scenes that Moses saw the raft.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
I mean, screen gets screened, which is crazy.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
He gets off the Moses. That gets him.
Speaker 1 (17:13):
I think it gets I thought the Spinosaurus. Okay, that
grabs on. Well, I guess.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
Because like ed screens an act I recognized him. Is
this guy He's going to be in this for a while?
There he goes, he's gone.
Speaker 1 (17:29):
Yeah, screen got screened. He didn't how much screen time? Yeah? Oh,
screen time. But I what I like most is I
like how the sailboats knocked over. Highly irresponsible for Reuben
to be in that water. He's like, we've done it before.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
Bro, there's with three children, essentially none of whom know
how to operate a boat. It would seem I don't
like Zab can keep watching, I think, but he's not
good at it. So yeah, very very irresponsible to have
three kids in dinoh water.
Speaker 1 (18:02):
Terrible idea. But I like when that gets knocked over,
and then just the length of the chase scene, and
I like when they land it brought back Shark bait
vibes where they go into the shallow water, which is
very random. Yeah, but I like when there's this oh.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
Sorry, when Nina gets taken out and she's like they're
trying to pull up as a massive block of equipment
of gear and just goes behind the block and then
you've see in the back kind of spine sal like
wake up and head into the water and then you
never see her again. It's a well shot sequence that see.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
That scene is top three for me. When it wakes up,
it's I would say my top three in this movie
are the Rank or Rank corps Saurus eating Hitman Agent
forty seven because it reminded me of a Return of
the Jedi. I like when the spinosaurus wakes up in
the surf. That's my probably my favorite water moment. And
then my third favorite is after the t rex chase
(18:56):
with the with the very well built raft is whoever
made that is? I don't know what that fabric is, Jay,
but durable, it's that top, it's that John Wick suit fabric.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
Oh, it's a bullet proof inflatable exactly.
Speaker 1 (19:15):
But when the t rex gets its head stuck between
the rocks and realizes that it misses its dinner and
it's like, oh, it's just it's a little bit annoyed.
It gives a chuff and it has a personality. I'm
not saying. I'm not saying it was like, oh, like
Kevin James and King of Queen's Oh gosh, you know,
I just I don't know why I brought that up,
but it's, you know, the flustered husband is what I'm saying.
(19:37):
What so it doesn't do that. It just it's kind
of pissed, that's not gonna eat and maybe it's face hurts.
And those are my three favorite moments, but two of
them involve water.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
I mean the there's one moment in the raft sequence
where little Isabella is under the raft on her own
and the t Rex is above it, and it just
you get the depression of the teeth in the Yeah.
I loved that little detail, like this trying trying to eat.
It's never seen a raft before. What is this thing
(20:09):
just trying wite down on this flexible yellow stuff and
she's underneath it. I like that, And I love the
raft popping out through the little gap because I initially
had no idea what it was. Of some other creatures
going to attack him now, but it's just the rock
and popping out.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
The john Wick raft, the john Wick craft.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
The whole wrap, the whole t Rex evens is fantastic.
I don't know when when she inflates the raft to
start with and the t rex disappears and then the
raft drops down and just gone. I got to the
quick t Rex because that's that's going back to the
first film. How did that t rex get into the
that hole with the raptors. It just appears and it's
the teleporting t rex.
Speaker 1 (20:50):
Teleporting. We need that t shirt teleporting t rex. Yeah,
all the set pieces are well built. You have just Yeah,
the spinas horses are working with thesaurus and then they
slowly attack the people on there. Even the scene where
Zora is trying to get the tag on the Mosesaurus.
I like that she's at the front of the boat
(21:11):
and Bailey comes up to help. I like that Doctor
Henry Loomis during that scene is actually like quite good.
He straps her in. He's successful. He's not a problem
on the boat. And you know, screen doesn't have any
more screen time, which is fine, But it's a fun
like propulsive scene that is basically in a straight line,
(21:34):
and I dig it, and just watching the Moses saurus
jump up in the air and flop, and then seeing
Loomis's face how happy he is watching the spine of
saurus is attack, and how they work together. Just the
over I mean, one thing that he's great at to
it Edwards is overhead shots where you just get a
sense of scale of how big these these suckers are.
And so I enjoyed that. Yeah, it's just a beautiful Okay,
(22:00):
is this movie. Are any of these scenes all timer scenes? No?
But is it a very functional and smart summer blockbuster. Yes.
So I guess when I'm heaping praised on this movie, Jay,
I don't think there's anything in this movie where I'll
look back and just think that's an all timer scene,
(22:22):
which is hard to do. But I will look at
them and be like, these were smart decisions being made
to make a familiar film without clone babies.
Speaker 2 (22:32):
That's it. They tried to go different directions in the past,
and it's evolved, like cloning kids and locusts and things
that are just like this is and like I think
generating a dinosaur that you fire a gun and the
raptor goes after the where the gun was fine. This
is it's the worst parts of the franchise when they
tried to do something new, how much they shuldn'ty shouldn't
try to do something, But I understand why they've kept
(22:53):
it stripped back and straightforward. And I think, uh, Loomis
is my favorite character this time around because he's I've
always been frustrated by the Justice Smith characters in the
previous two films. Franklin is because he's like, gets taken
to the dinosaur areas and just complains when he's there,
(23:15):
doesn't want to be there. It's scared of everything, whereas
Loomis isn't planning on going on the mission. He's like,
what mission? Mission? The betterest what mission? But he's taken
there anyway, and he loves it. He's amazing. He's having
a great time. Yeah, it's it's scary at times, but
like you say, he's he's getting stuck in. He's clipping
(23:37):
Zora to the to the boat like he's going to
get the refill when she fires the whatever the canister off.
There's there's they're trying to. You could see them setting
up the more of a romance between Zora and Loomis.
There's there's some scenes where like do you feel like
maybe was written out a little bit, but they didn't
(23:58):
go down that path too much, which I'm fine with
prefer they don't.
Speaker 1 (24:04):
Yeah, you don't need a smooch. You don't need Like
Jurassic World, that relationship between Bryce Dallis Howard and Chris
Pratt makes me just want to It's just fall my face.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
It's almost like a parody of those I.
Speaker 1 (24:18):
Really and like, you know, I liked watching Malcolm flirt
with Laura Dern, you know, I like that that. You know,
in the second one you have married couples grants on
his own, so I mean that's fine. But yeah, these two,
I mean they're two good looking people experiencing near death stuff.
And he's like, yeah, he catches the DNA, he helps
(24:39):
out I you could see while the two would have
some chemistry on that mission, and that's pretty much it.
There's not a scene where they start smooching in front
of the rank corsaurus, so it's yeah, it's played really well.
And he's just like you said, I was thinking about
this too. You have like Taylioni and and William H.
Macy and the third one, and they're screaming. They're just no,
(25:07):
oh gosh. The Delgados in this one, they follow a
pipeline to a they enact a plan, yeah, and it's successful.
They follow the pipes to the hub. Like That's that
immediately makes me like them. And the fact that Xavier
jumped into water, the fact that just like even there's
that scene where the two girls they're talking very loudly.
(25:29):
There's a conversation scene in this where nobody would be sleeping,
but everyone seems to fall asleep immediately. But I like
that the daughters are sleeping with the dad and Xavier
is doing watch. I like that the daughter doesn't hate
the dad, that the dad doesn't hate the daughter, Like
he doesn't even dislike Xavier. He brought him with. He's
just annoyed that Xavier is lazy.
Speaker 2 (25:48):
Yeah, yeah, I do. Like the youngest I doesn't like
Xavier and she like won't give him any other correction.
Speaker 1 (25:54):
And then you know, there's there's that. It's not kids
who are just unlikable. It's not I don't know, like
there's no there's no Jake Johnson's too, which I like,
there's no like, hey, I'm in an office and I'm
watching a screen and I'm loud.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
But anytime the kids were in peril, I wasn't concerned
for them.
Speaker 1 (26:19):
That's yeah.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
It's just the thing. They're not going to kill a
kid in these films.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
They've never killed a kid, have they They haven't.
Speaker 2 (26:25):
Oh, like the closest they've got is the start of
the Lost World when the little girl faces the compiece.
But then there's a light to see where they say
that she survived. She's fine. Yeah, just just many many
multiple flesh ones.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
Tiny bites. Yeah, she survived and storm Air didn't win. Yeah,
but I you know, I don't mind that they did that.
They you know, I don't. I never worried about them,
even at the end. Spoil We're going in a major spoilertary.
Marsha spoiler territory. Marsha Ali wanted to die in this movie,
but then universal went no, I feel and so yeah,
(27:01):
no he They filmed him dying and Marschalla wanted to die,
and Edwards wanted but the studio went no. So he lived,
which it's commershai. He's awesome, so let him. But but
you know that dinosaur slow. I remember in the Nightmare
sorry Knight of Living Dead remake, when the ladies like
(27:23):
they're slow, we can just walk around them, and then
she leaves the house and then just walks around zombies.
I wonder if this scene with the Flair, he's like, ah,
I was like, wait, I could probably run, and then
he gets up and runs. That's my head kind he realizes.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
Wait a minute, the Donas is chasing the Flare. I
can just throw the I saw the first film. I
saw what you're supposed to do.
Speaker 1 (27:47):
Yeah, and so you know, I can see him living.
So they brought him back and they kind of have
a happy ending for the film. I like that the
Titanosaurus isn't killed.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
I like none of the dinosaurs that killed. Yeah, there's
a Defosaurus eating on a para. What's it that's already
been killed Paris Parasaurolus. I always struggle with that one.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
Uh the films.
Speaker 2 (28:21):
Together.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
That's such a funny scene though, Xavier's peen and then
just Raptor pops up and I just.
Speaker 2 (28:27):
Know the ghal of This isn't a short film, but
in the second half of a film, to put a
peeings put a long peeing sequence in knowing that people
are going to be sat in the cinema they finished
their giant bucket of soda and like, Ah, this guy's pein.
I need to go and.
Speaker 1 (28:46):
Film left do more people? Okay, if you go see
a Tom Hanks movie, does it make you have to
pin war? Ah?
Speaker 2 (28:56):
I'm at what point in his films is the peeing?
It's gen't really like Forrest Gumps in the first half.
Speaker 1 (29:04):
League of their Own. It's kind of closer to the
third maybe when he shows up.
Speaker 2 (29:08):
Yeah, Green Mile, it's in the second.
Speaker 1 (29:10):
First off, I think, yeah, because he cures.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
His well, I think he has difficulty peeing in the
first half, I think, and then second off it's cured,
set up, payoff.
Speaker 1 (29:22):
So it just depends.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
Yeah, it just depends. Yeah, the money Pit he has
like a peeing competition with a fountain. I forget what
point that's in it, because that's a bad film. I
haven't returned to the money Pit. That was the one
and done.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
I've always considered doing a data post about that, but
I just don't want to. I don't want to tackle him.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
So do you reckon any of these characters are gonna cut?
They can make another one. I reckon they're gonna see
a Zora Bennett, dun Henry nearly miss the Delgados. Yeah,
I want some other mission to get waylaid by dinosaurs.
Speaker 1 (29:54):
Again, I think, so why not? It was stupid. I
read an article from The GUARDI in today and they're like,
why is Hollywood so stuck on remakes and reboots? And
I wanted them to add and then I put why
have they always? Yeah, like, look at the nineteen thirties
with all the monster movies. There wasn't just one Frankenstein film.
(30:16):
There wasn't one Invisible Man film. There wasn't one you
know me films. There have been you know me Bond films,
there have been, you don't how many Panther films, Like
just how many Kid Kong films have there been? Like
there's so like Hollywood has always been I'm talking loud
and I don't care. Hollywood has always kind of followed
a remakes or different ip and so yeah, and weren't
(30:41):
a tough time for theaters. So it's just the dumbest thing.
It's just, you know you recently, like I know, some
cool big budget movies have been released, but they don't
make a lot of money. Black Bag fifty million dollar
budget didn't recoup it. My favorite movie of the year,
my number two at Centers too. And davidka by the way,
he's went in twenty twenty five because he wrote Presence,
(31:02):
he wrote Black Bag, and he wrote Drastic World Rebirth.
It's a banger year for David cap Yeah. Just keep
them away from directing movies with Ricky Gerbeez.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
Keep everyone. Yes, my top three films are original because
it's Black Bags in It's Ballad of Waters Island. It's
my top three so far.
Speaker 1 (31:22):
That movie rules, but the second time I like it more.
Speaker 2 (31:26):
I've got Drassic World in my top ten. I've got
Finest Nation, Bloodlines in my top ten, so I've got
Mission Impossible, Final Recording just outside my top ten, Dangerous
Animals in my top ten.
Speaker 1 (31:38):
Oh, that movie rules. What's your list? What's your top ten?
Speaker 2 (31:41):
It's it's mine's different because it's I've got like UK
releases versus us. But my top ten is Mickey seventeen,
Nosferat to Flow, Jurassic World, Rebirth, Dangerous Animals, Final Station, Bloodlines,
Nickel Boys, Battle of Waters Island, Sinner's Black Bag. It's
my top ten films that released in the UK. But
I have like in the middle of I've seen thirty
(32:02):
five so far, which is good for me for this
time of year, and I've got like a block in
the middle of like, hey, fun horror movie is that,
like Companion, The Monkey Heart Eyes, like action horror comedies
like Novacaine, The Death of a Unicorn. They were like
the middle block is those kind of films which they're
very fun, pretty fun. Yeah, I have.
Speaker 1 (32:22):
I guess I'll start at ten Jane Austin Wrecked My Life,
Centers Warfare, Dangerous Animals twenty eight years later Companion, which
I Sophie Thatcher underplays it. I'm not saying she doesn't.
The way she plays that role in Companion has really
stuck with me, like the German speaking scene. Just the
way that she plays it has lingered in my memory.
I love Companion. And then Presence, which hasn't less my
(32:45):
memory than three is Ephis, which is just a joy.
And then the ballot of Wallace Island is number two
in Black Bag Well also on Island. I liked it
more the second time, even though I liked it a
lot the first time, but I like it more the
second time because it's wonderful.
Speaker 2 (33:00):
I need some reason twenty eight years later isn't on
my list, but that would look at Mickey seventeen definitely
be in the top ten. I really enjoyed it.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
Yeah, but I mean it's I don't.
Speaker 2 (33:10):
Know, there's some films that we mentioned that we'll definitely
talking about at the end of the year, with some
incredible aquatic sequences in some of those films.
Speaker 1 (33:18):
I mean, do we need to talk more about I mean,
you know, the end has marhersha Ali in the water.
There's a giant chase scene.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
When there's like the store.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
Has water in it.
Speaker 2 (33:30):
Yeah, it's flooded all over this place, and there's a
reflection in the water of the the music don't coming
down from the ceiling. I was like, great, there's water
over the place. It's fantastic.
Speaker 1 (33:40):
I mean they crawl around and drainage pipes, which is great.
Uh yeah, it's it's it's probably it's easily the most
heavily watered of the group.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
Definitely, And I also.
Speaker 1 (33:51):
Too, we didn't talk about this, but I like that.
Remember how the Durastic World movies, the Trevarro trilogy, We're like,
dinosaurs are now everywhere and they are going to you know,
take over the world and then six years later, Yeah,
they're all dead.
Speaker 2 (34:08):
Yeah, we thought about it.
Speaker 1 (34:11):
They can't deal with this, like they can't. They can't
handle this, these temperatures in this world, so they need
to live the rules.
Speaker 2 (34:21):
They can't. Yea, it dies by the common code kind
of thing, like it's not like, yeah, which is fair.
That's how I feel like that's what it would be.
The world is not out was sixty five million years.
Speaker 1 (34:31):
Eier and it's but it's an elegant solution because some
movies I think, hate the sequels that came before them,
Last Jedi and totally fine, sure, but this one goes, okay,
we can't do this, like they're just dying off. People
aren't that excited. So many people have gotten murdered by
(34:54):
absurd and you know, it's smart. They even put a
research facility on an isolated island. Not good at a
theme park, you know, so they learned, even though they
all died from that or most of the people die
from that. But it's just a yeah, it's an elegant
way to get rid of dinosaurs in the real world.
(35:15):
And listen, a pharmaceutical company would send people to an
island to get blood or samples from dinosaurs. That's just
the way it is what they would do. Why can't
and why can't we kill them? Well, because they're this, this,
and this dies by this moment, so we can't do that.
So as soon as you established this sort of simple idea,
(35:36):
you're on board because you go, okay, fine, that makes sense.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
And there's the time, the ticking clock of continguency plan
as a helicopter, it's going to be here.
Speaker 1 (35:46):
We got to get to the chopper, get to the chopper,
and then they die.
Speaker 2 (35:50):
And then they die. And also this this is I
finally was the first person to tell Wolf Slato a
film with explaining helicopter in it. I got to this
one first, as all this open a day and I
went to Will and said, Will, I can confirm explaining
helicopter and drastic watter of birth, And so I got
a film on the list. Finally, my life's mission completely.
Speaker 1 (36:11):
You did it. I did it, So Jay, let's think
about it. This movie's a lot of fun, but it's
not Aside from that, this isn't a movie that will
have like a long lasting effect with summer audiences and
like merchandising. Do you do you think that's a bad
(36:33):
or good thing, because I mean, critics are split, audiences
don't really like it. It's making a lot of money,
but like, do you think it maybe played things a
little too safe for.
Speaker 2 (36:44):
You could argue that the first film obviously has the
most impact of the franchise. It did the most world building,
most set up because it was starting from a blank slate,
so anything they did was new, and whereas this one
is building upon that but not building much upon that.
(37:10):
Hm hmm. I don't know how this film could become
more iconic, but I also don't know if I want
it to be. I'm more than happy for it to
be a solid entry in the Jurassic franchise rather than
see I. I do like when they when films take
wild swings and show me something new.
Speaker 1 (37:31):
I do.
Speaker 2 (37:32):
I do appreciate that as well, Like that when we
talk about the new Shark movies and it was like,
we guess we see one that's got an underwater surgery scene,
so I haven't seen before. Great love that acaud's show
me something new. And the ones that just follow the
same rule book I don't like as much.
Speaker 1 (37:47):
Hmmm.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
I don't want to have different rules for different kinds
of films. But this has just kind of trodden the
beats of the franchise and done it really well intelligently.
Speaker 1 (38:00):
It's say and it knows it. And I don't think
it's phoning it in either, because Johansson's having fun, Bailey's
having fun, everyone seems to be enjoying themselves, and characters
are given care. I don't know, I don't know why.
I think. I think if this movie came out before
Jurassic World, just YadA, YadA, few things in the script,
(38:23):
it would be much more well received.
Speaker 2 (38:26):
I think so too. It does well if it came
out just after Dressing Park three. There are a lot
of similarities between this and three in terms of going
to the island, bringing and looking for a kid. So
going to on and looking for It's like Dress Park
three has a fairly straightforward plant, like we've got to
go there and come back again. It's just the characters
more annoying.
Speaker 1 (38:45):
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah. So if this was Jurassic Park three.
Speaker 2 (38:49):
Yeah, that's the ideal scenario. I think they don't have
our current Dressing Park three. We have this instead.
Speaker 1 (38:55):
And just hey, go get this okay cool. I think
it would have done better. But I really think, you know,
Dominion even though it made money and Fallen Kingdom and
we had fun with Dominion, we were on the out
now with Aaron a podcast, shit fun with it, but
I think people were sort of jaded by it. And
then but I mean, I don't know how you watch
(39:18):
you know, Thunderbolts was fun, but it's the same thing.
It's the but you know, they're battling depression instead, and
it there's a new Superman coming out and it's I mean,
they just remade How to Train Your Dragon almost shot
for shot and it's made five hundred million and critics
like it. So I don't understand how people can watch
(39:40):
this and be like, oh, yeah, I've seen it. But
then you go see that new live action How to
Train Your Dragon that's a shot for shot pretty much
a shot for shot remake of the original that came out,
you know, fifteen years ago. Yeah, it's awesome. I don't
I don't understand it. Jay.
Speaker 2 (39:53):
So yeah, I'm like, we're getting a live action Moana
starring still starring Dwyne Johnson.
Speaker 1 (39:59):
I don't know, are they making that or is that
a joke? They would try to photos? I saw photos
and I went.
Speaker 2 (40:08):
Oh, no, I don't want it, So I hope it's
a joke.
Speaker 1 (40:11):
You know what live action remakes are. They're just not
as visually interesting. Yeah, as they commated predecessors.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
It needs to be it needs to look real. And yeah,
things look more fun when they don't look real. You
can do more with it.
Speaker 1 (40:27):
Let's just make it less visually interesting. Yeah, yeah, the hey,
Drastic World Rebirth.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
Doesn't need to be designed. Yeah anyway, So.
Speaker 1 (40:35):
Yeah, it's made three hundred and eighteen million already, Jay.
Speaker 2 (40:38):
Awesome, fantastic. Yeah, I hope it makes more. I'm sure
it will. And yeah, I look, I look forward to
the future entries in the franchise and talking about them here,
because they're all going to have water scenes in them somewhere.
They have to. It's they must any any more thoughts, Sweet,
you sure it's good.
Speaker 1 (40:57):
It's listen, you know what. I really like it the
more I think about it. I David kept Gareth thatwards.
He took a lot of notes from Spielberg too, when
Spielberg watched the movie. But the performances are good. People
want to be there. The dinosaurs are interesting, they make
smart decisions. It's easy to follow. The characters aren't dummies.
There's a hidden depth to them. The dinosaurs actually have
(41:20):
some pathos. They they're likable in this. They are not villains.
There's a ton of aquatic action. It is a very smart, fun,
well made summer blockbuster. That's my thoughts.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
I agree, there's lots of dinosaurs in it and they
have fun. Yeah, that's what I needed, so great. Well,
this is actually going to come out with the Mack's
going to come out in two dights.
Speaker 1 (41:45):
This episode.
Speaker 2 (41:46):
I'm going to change the schedule again. The business. If
you are hoping to hear Parana to this Morning this week,
as you have been hoping to hear it for like
four of the weeks in the past, next week this week,
dress it well for birth, so that next week will
therefore be p this Morning with heatherbacks and doublesh. Hopefully
it's recorded. It's been in the can for a couple
(42:07):
of months now, but these new films keep going out,
So how back next week for that.
Speaker 1 (42:12):
Heather's the Best.
Speaker 2 (42:13):
Heather is the Best that has this really fun episode.
That's one of one of my favoritepisodes I've ever recorded
of a podcast, and I just keep kicking it down
the road only I've heard it so far.
Speaker 1 (42:22):
You're getting great, Like, I know, people make fun of improv,
but she'll roll with anything, and it's so much fun
recording because she's funny. So yeah, she really.
Speaker 2 (42:34):
Follow this podcast on social media at Deep Blue Seapod,
email us deep Seapod at gmail dot com. I find
my writings at life versus film dot com, where I
have finished going through Twin Peaks season two and now
I'm going to fill in some Spielberg blind spots and
David Lynch blind spots before checking out Twin Peaks the
return soon eventually. Oh no, we'll see mark any plugs.
Speaker 1 (42:55):
H movies on the Flax podcast. The Alien, Romuluspode and
star Tek generations are doing really well. Also, the Alien
three episode just keeps plugging along and I keep getting
feedback about that episode, so yeah, check those out and yeah,
yeah that's.
Speaker 2 (43:12):
It very nice. Okay, well that will do for Jurassic
Water re Birth. I have been Jane Klewett.
