Laura Cronin, a post-primary teacher with significant experience in mainstream and Special Education Needs (SEN) settings is calling for a serious overhaul of the teacher recruitment process in Ireland.
She says that despite the media's claim that there is a severe shortage in her subject areas such as Home Economics, positions in the Southeast or nationwide are non-existent.
With nine years of experience, Laura is unable to support herself with substitute or maternity contract roles when teachers on these contracts are not paid during school closures.
Despite her passion for it, Laura is stepping away from teaching.
Speaking to Damien on 'Déise Today' this morning (Thursday), Laura delves into the reality of the teacher recruitment industry in Ireland, from the cost of upskilling, the challenges of the hiring process, and the stigma around teaching.
