(02:08):

that it is turning your follicles into a wasteland, or
even that healthy diet that's silently starving your hair strands.

(03:32):
comeback story it starts today, So let's go ahead and
get into it in this hair loss Solution, and it's
gonna be your complete guide to thicker, healthier hair. Let
me tell you something you already know but maybe haven't
admitted to yourself yet. Hair loss it's not just about vanity.
It's about identity, your confidence in taking control of your
(03:55):
body's changes as we observe hair Loss Awareness moth this August.
Let's separate the fact from fiction and explore both conventional
and natural solutions that deliver real results. First, we need
to understand why hair loss happens. Your hair follicles. They're
like tiny factories, and when they slow down or shut off,
(04:19):
the result is thinning, shedding, or baldness. And there's three
main primary culprits to this, one being genetics. If your
parents had thinning hair, chances are higher you will too.
But genes they load the gun and lifestyle pulls the
trigger and we'll get into that a little bit later.
(04:43):
Number two is hormones, and for men that's DHT that's
testosterone byproduct and it slowly strangles the hair follicles. And
for women it's postpartum changes like menopause, and also polycystic
ovarian syndrome PCOS. They can dramatically affect the hair density.
(05:07):
We also need to look at lifestyle factors chronic stress
that pushes hair into that resting phase, poor nutrition that
starves the hair follicles. Even over styling causes physical damage.
Let's start by examining some of the conventional treatments for
this monoxidel a brand name Rogaine. It's the over the
(05:33):
counter standard. It's an FDA approved and it works for
about two thirds of users to slow the shedding and
thicken their hair. But if you stop using it, you'll
likely lose your gains and there's few side effects with
this that include an itchy scalp and unwanted facial hair mainly.
(05:55):
Next up is finesteride a brand name Propecia. It's a
stronger option for men. It blocks the DHT production. It
maintains hair in about ninety percent of long term users,
but it carries potential sexual side effects for about just
about three percent of men, and it is not recommended
(06:16):
for women. We also are going to look at low
level laser therapy. It offers a drug free approach. It's
an FDA cleared device that can increase density by about
twenty or thirty percent after six months of consistent use,
but that does require discipline. And when our special guest
(06:37):
joins us, he will share the latest in medical treatments
and technology that are more accessible and more affordable than ever.
As far as natural approaches, research shows several effective options
like rosemary oil. It's been proven pretty effective in clinical studies.
What you do here is you mix five dry with
(07:00):
coconut oil and massage that into your scalp nightly, just
like you would monoxidel. There's also pumpkin seed oil. It
can reduce DHT levels by forty percent naturally if you
take one teaspoon daily, or you can even apply that
topically to your scalp. I also suggest scalp massages. It
(07:23):
increases blood flow by about twenty percent or twenty two
percent in studies with just four minutes of daily gentle kneeding.
You can do that at your desk. If you combine
that with weekly micro needling using a small small roller,
it enhances the results. And folks nutrition it plays a
(07:44):
critical role. Key nutrients for healthy hair include iron and
especially for women, those ferretin levels need to be checked,
and zinc it's essential for protein synthesis. A few others
biotin and B vitamins, and omega three fatty acids. You
(08:06):
also need to look at getting adequate protein because hair
is made of keratin, which is a protein. If we
dive this into separated into men and women, for men
in effective regime would include mourning monoxidyl application plus a
pumpkin seed oil supplement and then maybe a nightly roseberry
(08:29):
oil massage and then weekly do microneedlin and for women
would include an iron rich breakfast with collagen peptides and
an evening peppermint oil treatment that stimulates hair growth. And
(08:49):
what I suggest doing is taking monthly progress photos to
track those changes. But folks, the most important factor is
to start now. Hair loss isn't inevitable. It's often manageable
when addressed early. Every day you wait longer, it's another
(09:09):
follicle that could have been saved. And this hair Loss
Awareness Month, let's take that first step toward that healthier hair.
Maybe your biggest hair loss challenge and maybe it might
be shedding, or maybe you want to slow, slowly regrow
your hair. The solution for this starts with understanding your
(09:33):
unique situation in taking consistent action and whether you choose
medical treatments, natural approaches, or maybe a combination, which is
what I suggest. The power to make a difference is
in your hands. And after the break again, we're going

we're here to help you every step of the way.
So what we're doing is we're talking about hair loss
today and we're giving some hair loss solutions that actually work.
Hair loss, it affects millions, but effective solutions exist when
you understand the root causes. The three main culprits are genetics,
(12:21):
and while you can't change your DNA, lifestyle adjustments can
slow progression. You also have the hormones in particular DHT
and men and imbalances in women from pregnancy or menopause.
And we also want to look at lifestyle factors like
chronic stress and nutritional deficiencies that starve those hair follicles.
(12:45):
Nutrition it plays a critical role and key in nutrients
that you need to look at adding into your diet
or iron, zinc, biotin, omega three s and adequate protein.
The most important factor is to start early. Every day
counts in preserving those hair follicles. While hair loss it
(13:06):
can feel devastating, today's options mean no one has to
accept it as inevitable. Whether you choose medical treatments, medication,
or natural remedies, or as I suggest, a combination of
all of them. Consistency is the key in this hair
loss Awareness month. We want to take that first step
(13:27):
toward understanding your new unique situation in reclaiming your hair health.
Our special guest today is going to discuss the latest
and greatest in hair restoration. Right now, please join me
in welcoming a true pioneer in the field of hair restoration.
It's doctor Ken Washinik. For over fifty years, Bosley has
(13:49):
been at the forefront of hair transplant innovation, performing more
procedures than any other medical practice in America. In leading
their groundbreaking work is no other than doctor Ken, Bosley's
chief medical officer in a visionary in hair science, Doctor
Ken isn't just a surgeon. He's a researcher who has
(14:11):
changed the hair game. He also has a PhD in
cellular biology focusing on hormone metabolism, and he's pioneered revolutionary
work in hair cloning, which brings us closer than ever
to the future of Regenta hair solutions. His leadership extends
across prestigious organizations, including serving as president of the International
(14:34):
Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, in publishing cutting edge research
in journals like the New England Journal of Medicine in
the Lancet, from his role as former CEO of Adaran's
Research Institute to his faculty position at NY School of Medicine,
Doctor Ken has dedicated his career to advancing treatment that
(14:57):
restore not just hair, but also confidence. We wanted to
have him here today to share his insights. Only someone
with his expertise can Doctor Ken. Welcome to the Doctor
Bob Martin Show. How are you today?
Speaker 4 (15:11):
I am doing great and I am thrilled to be
on the show with you. Doctor Adam, Thank you for
ad very kind introduction.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
Well, you've you've definitely earned that. So Doctor Ken, you
know we've been talking about this and it being hair
loss month in August.
Speaker 4 (15:27):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
You know, Bosly has been at this for over fifty
years now, and when you think of hair restoration, to me,
Bosley is the first name that comes to mind. So
with that, I want to say, what age is it
normal for people to start noticing hair loss?
Speaker 4 (15:46):
Well, you know so, Doc, I'm going to answer that
in just a second, but I did want to just
kind of call out something you just said, and that
is that August has been designated by the American Academy
Dermatology as National hair Loss Awareness Month, and and I
just wanted to frame that because that's a really puts
(16:07):
us at the perfect time to be having this discussion today.
So I want to thank you for working in our
topic during the month of August national hair Loss Awareness Month.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Yeah, is a very important topic. What's that It's a
very important topic that we get a lot of questions
on the show, So it being August, it just seems
fitting to have the leader in that is Bosly on
the show.
Speaker 4 (16:35):
Well, thank you very much, and now I'll finally get
around to your question about how hair loss affects people?
What age? How many people? So you'll get you'll get
different different specific numbers depending on what source you go to,
But the bottom line, we're looking at like eighty million
(16:56):
people men and women with hair loss in the US alone.
It's been estimated that in men, the average age that
you see hair loss is about twenty five starting, and
so it's like twenty five through forty is when you
see the most progression and the appearance of hair loss
in men. Women it's about a decade later. So it's
(17:18):
estimated that the average age of a woman when she
starts to know this hair loss is about thirty five.
They think, you know, even though we really focus on men,
because at some point in your life, it's like over
eighty percent of men will be affected by hair loss
in their lifetime. But in women, we know by age
fifty up to about fifty percent of women, once they
(17:38):
hit menopause and they start to have some thingning associated
with that hormonal change, can also experience hair loss. And
I do want to just give a little bit of
definition to what we're talking about, and that's male and
female pattern hair loss known medically as androgenetic alopecia, which
comes from your genes, genetics and the effect of male
(18:03):
hormones androgens on the hair follicle, which leads to a
miniaturization or shrinking of the hair follicles as opposed to
I'm just disappearing, falling out. They just gradually get less
and less useful to you over time.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
If you will mh and yeah, it's not just men problem.
This affects many females as well. And in the first
segment we were talking about some of the causes of
hair loss. But I want the listeners to hear from
doctor Ken your words on this what causes hair loss?
Speaker 4 (18:39):
Well, I think you know, there are a large number
of things that can cause hair loss. And as a dermatologist,
you know, dermatology is the field that really specializes in skin,
hair and nles, and so we see a good number
of different types of hair loss in in folks. The
(19:03):
overwhelming majority is male and female patterned hair losses androgenetic alopecia.
But you could see other things causing hair loss. I mean,
you could have autoimmune issues where your immune system is
attacking your hair. One of those types of diseases called
alopecia areata and there are a number of other type
of infectious type hair loss filiculitis, inflammatory conditions, nutritional imbalances,
(19:30):
hormonal changes that you see, you know, around pregnancy and menopause.
But for our discussion here, I think we'll focus on
the biggest majority. There's eighty million people in the US
that have male and female pattern hair loss, and that,
like I said, specifically something that's inherited genetically, and it
(19:53):
appears that it's a male hormone and androgen that causes
the miniaturization of these hair follicles over time. What's always
interesting and not understood at all is that as as
we age, often you know, your testosterone comes down on
but your hair loss goes up. So you know, the
question is why why is that? And that's just one
(20:14):
of the one of the unpleasant mysteries of the genetics
behind hair loss.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
Yeah, and I think that a lot of times we
think in our heads, well we can't outrun our genetics.
But but just maybe if we made just a couple
of lifestyle tweaks, and that's and that's what I discussed
earlier in the segment about about that with the audience,
Doctor Ken And when we come back from the break,
I want to get into exactly what Bosley can do
(20:42):
for the listeners. So I'm here with doctor Ken washinek
these A, the chief medical officer for Bosley hair Restoration,
the leader in hair restoration America. When we come back,
we'll be right back with doctor Ken. You're listening to
the Doctor Bob Martin Show.
Speaker 5 (21:02):
Are you waiting on a lightning strike? Are you waiting
for the perfect night? How are you waiting to the
time is night? Do you want to learn to deal with?
Don't you want to take the wheel stand? Don't you
another man?
Speaker 3 (21:24):
Money money for.
Speaker 4 (21:31):
Welcome back.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
You're listening to the Doctor Bob Martin Show. This is
Doctor Adam Brockman, and we're all about smarter living and
thriving and teaching you to become your own best doctor
most of the time. And remember if you've got questions
about your health, nutrition, or anything in between, our toll
free hotline is always open at eight hundred six zero
(21:52):
six eight eighty two to two. That's where two licensed physicians,
doctor Bob and myself we're standing by to help you
unlock your best self. That's eight hundred and six or
six eight eighty two to two. Let's get right back
into it with doctor Ken from Bosley and Doctor Ken.
I want you to go ahead and tell us about
Bosley's signature procedure, and that's the Boslely fue procedure.
Speaker 4 (22:17):
Well, thank you, it is. It's definitely a very useful
way to treat hair loss with people that have experienced
some miniaturization of the point of you know, just having
blank areas, bald areas, and their skins. So what we
do with this follicular unit excision or extraction method, the
FUI method that you discuss, the Bosley method that we
(22:40):
use is to take a very small instrument and remove
individual graphs. We call them all grass could have one hair,
two hairs, three hairs, or four hairs usually, and we
remove each of those individually from usually the back and sides,
and then move those hair by hair, one by one
(23:01):
into the area of hair loss, typically the hairline area
in people affected by hair loss. And why do we
do that, Why do we take these individual graphs or
hair follicles from the back and the sides. It's because, luckily,
when we talked about genetics, the genetics are pretty they
(23:23):
cause hair loss in a patterned way, hence the term
male pattern hair loss and female pattern hair loss. So
when you think of someone a man with very advanced
hair loss. Think of old statues from ancient Greece and Rome,
and they show that rim of hair around the person
with a very advanced hair loss and baldness on the
top of their head. But the rim of hair and
(23:45):
the sides and the back stays. And it's because genetically
those follicles, and those are the follicles we move to
replace the hair you've lost in the front and on
the top. Those follicles are not patterned to miniature, so
they're good for your lifetime and when you move them.
And it was published in nineteen fifty nine in the US.
(24:07):
You mentioned, I'm a faculty member at the New York
University School Medicine Department of Dermatology, a dermatologist from NYU.
In nineteen fifty nine, Norman orange Strike he published the
first study in the US that showed that when you
take hairs that are destined not to miniaturize your will
balls from the back and the sides, and you move
(24:27):
them to the areas where you've lost your hair, they
behave they grow just like they did in the back
and sides, and that would just keep growing. They don't
know you move them, so it's called donor dominance and
that's why hair transplantation is such a great success and
gives you the permanency when you move those hairs because
they're not as affected by the miniaturization process that the
(24:49):
hairs we lose are, and those are typically on the
top of your head, your hairline, in your crown or vertex.
In women, it can be a little more diffuse with
less of a specific pattern, but you still see in
women a pattern of hair loss which is thinning over
the top of their hair less loss in the hairlines.
(25:10):
But this FUI procedure is really useful to people. It
really makes a dramatic change in their life. We do
them every day, and that's one type of hair transplantation.
There's another type of hair transplantation called sut or molecular
unit transplantation, where you can remove the follicles in one
(25:32):
strip from the back of the person's scalp and knows
that area that's not affected by hair loss and then
dissect those down with dissecting microscopes surgical stereo microscopes and
into individual graphs one, two, three, four hairs and bring
them around that way. So whether you use this great advance,
which is the FUE procedure, or the other procedure fut
(25:54):
or combine the two. The goal is to get hair
follicles that are meant and will stay for your lifetime
and move them into the areas you've lost the hair,
and that's the beauty of the FUE procedure.
Speaker 2 (26:11):
And Doctor Ken also outside of these procedures, Bosley has
a full range of haircare options, including a online pharmacy
and can you tell listeners more about the other options
that Bosley has to and maybe some of them may
combine a couple of different therapies here.
Speaker 4 (26:33):
So you know, thank you for bringing that up, because
I think it's it's really really important. It's not unusual
when we treat different problems in dermatology, whether it's acne
or psoriasis, we use more than one medication. We use
the synergies between them to get the best results. And
hair loss is the same sort of approach that docs take,
(26:57):
so we like to combine therapies. I mean, if you're
going to have a an FUI procedure hair transplantation procedure,
and at Bodily we've done over five hundred thousand hair
transplantation procedures and over just over fifty years, so you know,
we're we're you know, in our fifty first year now,
and so we we we've done a ton of those
(27:19):
with great success. And what we love to do is
to get a patient to combine that surgery with hair
loss non surgical treatments so that they maintain as much
of their hair that they might have otherwise lost, plus
the hairs that were moved during the transplantation procedure, and
(27:41):
so it's you know, it's a win win. You know,
you're gaining hairs by moving them with the procedure, and
then you're holding on to the other hairs by medical
therapy that can can slow down, stop, or even reverse
and regrow some hair. So that's why we like to
combine those. And one of the things that you know,
you mentioned just a little while back about what age
(28:04):
that do people start to notice hair loss or exhibit
hair loss? And I want to circle back to that
because when you say what do we have at BOSI,
you know, we have a non surgical approaches. So often
when you're losing your hair, the thing you need to
do is get in and be seen by someone. So
you know, come to Bosie, see a hair loss specialists
(28:25):
and have them diagnose why you're losing your hair, and
you want to start the treatment as early as as possible,
so you don't want to wait until it's obvious. You
know when you're losing your hair. I mean you see
it all the time. Some say I'm losing my hair.
You know it runs in my family, and some say
it still looks good, it looks great. But you know
(28:46):
when you're thinning, and that's the time to really get started.
So you can come in and see one of our
experts and talk about treatments like FDA approved medication like
oral an asteroid, topical monoxide, and through the Bosley RX
(29:07):
telemedicine system, you can call in and do all that
from yourcouse and get some medications prescribed using a telemedicine
system if it's more convenient to you than rather than
going into the office.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
We're talking with doctor Ken from Bosley, he's the chief
medical officer there, and doctor Canon. We're coming up on
a break, but real quickly, I know you send an
email to me that said, hey, we're going to give
an offer to the listeners, and I'm going to read
that and I want to want you to go over
this when we come back but if you text the
code doctor to two zero three two zero three, you'll
(29:44):
receive a free info kit, a free consultation in a
two hundred and fifty dollars Bosly gift card. Again, we'll
go over that after the break. You're listening to the
Doctor Bob Martin Show.
Speaker 3 (30:03):
So you saw your dad, I'm a Bush of numbers
signons the one never single lover, I'm stoppable Today.
Speaker 2 (30:37):
Welcome back, Doctor Adam Brockman here as we return to

into our conversation with doctor Ken, Bosley's chief medical officer.
Bosley celebrating their fiftieth year of hair restoration in the
in America. And also it happens to be August is
the hair restoration or hair awareness hair will also awareness month.
And doctor Ken has been kind enough to let our
(31:43):

able to what should they do if they're experiencing hair

Speaker 4 (32:18):

pretty straightforward when I wants you to say it, but
I mean, go to Bosley dot com and you'll be

(32:39):

zero three and come in and get an evaluation. So
I think Bosley dot com is the best way to
get started. And again, I really I don't want to
sound like a broken record, but you want to start
(33:01):
treating your hair loss early, not later. I mean, I remember,
you know, way way back when I first started experiencing
hair loss, and I went to see a doc and
they said, ah, you're still come back when you're when
you're bald, and like, that's exactly the wrong thing to do.
What you want to do is be proactive and not
become bald. But if you do, that's sort of Bosley
(33:22):
fu e procedure, the hair transplantation procedures come in and work. Wonders.
Speaker 2 (33:29):
Well, doctor Ken, I want you to tell me again,
when I think of hair restoration, the first name that
comes to my mind is Bosley. So I want you
to tell listeners what makes the Bosly difference in hair restoration.
Speaker 4 (33:42):
Well, well, thank you for that that's very nice to you.
And the truth is that it's accurate. So you know,
thank you. When you ask people to name a practice
that takes care of people with hair loss, Bosly is
as always the first answer that that you get from people.
It's the most recognized practice in the United States for
(34:05):
treating hair loss, and I say the world to be
honest with you. So we've been going for just over
fifty years. We've done over a half million of these procedures,
and beyond the hair transplantation process, we treat patients every
single day with non surgical approaches to hair loss plus
(34:28):
the procedural approaches. And I think that makes a big
difference is our experience level. So you know, being around
that long, having seen that many patients, taking care of
that many people, it's kind of hard to beat our
experience and the expertise that that brings. I mean, we
have docs that have dedicated their careers to just taking
care of people with hair loss, such as I have.
(34:51):
And because we have a nice group like we all
sort of you know, feed into each other or we
get a collective experience very hard for other people to offer.
And so I think that's one of the main things
is just we have experience, we have expertise, and what
I also think brings some of our best results of
(35:14):
our team. Our clinical teams that assist our doctors have
been with us for a good long time and they
are expert at what they're doing, and they are I
think one of the reasons that we have come so
far and become the leader in the field is we
have wonderful experienced expert providers physicians and a strong clinical
(35:40):
team that supports them. And you want that because you
can go to the best doctor around and if they
don't have the clinical teams to back up that procedure,
then you won't be able to get the same kind
of results you get at Bosley.
Speaker 2 (35:53):
Yeah, and I agree with that. I've been able to
meet a few of your key team members, including Greg
and doctor Kay in Columbus, Ohio, and both of them
were just fantastic and knowledgeable and uh and again, uh, doctor,
can I want you to uh to give our listeners
that that code and uh what they can expect in
that free info kit in a free consultation.
Speaker 4 (36:16):
Well, doctor, you know the thing that you want to
do for that procedure that that offer is to text
the word doctor d O C t O R two
two zero three, dash to zero three. And when you
do that, you'll get an information packet back. You'll get
a coupon for a great offer, a discount that comes
(36:39):
along with you know, being part of this offer on
your show today and and you'll you'll be able to
make it a free consultation to come in and be
evaluated by a hair hair rops expert.
Speaker 2 (36:50):
All right, thank you for that offer. Doctor Ken. Uh
join us in just a short second. You're going to
be back listening to Doctor Ken with Boslo. Your's too
the Doctor Bob Martin Show.
Speaker 3 (37:02):
Someone's gonna stand by.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
Welcome back doctor Adam Brockman here as we return to
the Doctor Bob Martin Show. And well, folks, we've covered
a lot of ground today on today's special hair loss
Awareness Moth edition of The Doctor Bob Martin Show. Before
we say goodbye, let me leave you with this hair loss.
It isn't your bald sins, it's your wake up call.
(37:43):
And look, I get it. When you first noticed those
extra strands in the drain or that widening part in
your head of hair, panic sets in. You start googling
at two am. You fall down those rabbit holes of
miracle cures. But after day I want you to see
there there's a better way and hope, I hope from
experts that know hair loss better than the rest, and
(38:05):
that's the folks at Bosley hair Restoration who have been
the experts for fifty years now. I want to extend
a thank you to doctor Ken, the chief medical director
at Bosley, for letting you know what is the latest
in hair restoration and giving that exclusive offer to the
Doctor Bob Martin show listeners. So Doctor Ken, again, I
just we got a couple of minutes left. I want
(38:27):
you to just highlight a few key points for our listeners,
and again thank you for joining us.
Speaker 4 (38:34):
Well, thanks a lot, Doc, I really really enjoyed our
time together and I'm really really thrilled that we're able
to get this done in National hair Loss Awareness Month,
particularly important topic to so many millions of people and
certainly to all of us at Bosley. So I think
to wrap it up, what you want to do is,
if you're experience of hair loss, find out why and
(38:55):
find out what can be done early, not later. And
there are a couple of ways to do that pretty easily.
You can go to boslei dot com get information, Uh,
make an appointment for a consultation, and you can do
that by coming into our office and meeting a hair
loss expert. Or you can do it remotely now, which
you know is more and more common, you know, to
tell the medicine as it's called is you can you
(39:17):
can be evaluated through a remote consultation and then come
into the office separately. Or you can also go to
bosliarx dot com, which is a telemedicine system platform where
you meet with a healthcare practitioner and you can be
prescribed specific tailored medications for your hair loss problem and
(39:41):
try to address it without even leaving the comfort of
your home. So you have a couple of options. You
can go to bosliarx dot com and you can go
to Bosley dot com get information, making an appointment for
a consultation which is free, and come in and see someone.
And then you know, obviously if you're going to do
hair transplantation for well, we'll need to see in the
(40:01):
office and talk to you about what we can do
with that with say the Bosley after you lead procedure,
so you help restore your hair.
Speaker 2 (40:09):
All right, Well, thank you for that, Doctor Ken, I
really appreciate you joining us today and listeners, if today's
show resonated with you, if you're ready to take control
of your health, your hair health journey, that is, I
want to hear from you. Call us at eight hundred
and six or six eight A two two, or visit
our website Doctor Bob dot com, and I invite you
to take advantage of Bosly's offer by texting Doctor to
(40:30):
two zero three two zero three again that's for a
free console, a free info kit in a two hundred
and fifty dollars Bosley gift card. So for doctor Bob,
our entire team and myself, Doctor Adam Brockman, thank you
for joining us. Remember your hair doesn't define you, but
that confidence when you look and feel good, that does.
