(03:37):
Martin Show. How are you today?
Speaker 5 (03:39):
I'm wonderful.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
How are you I I'm doing great again. I'm excited
to have you on the show. So, folks, these aren't
just executives. These are people that are passionate about empowering
you to take control of your health journey. They understand
the challenges that you face and they're committed to providing
you with the tools and the knowledge you need to succeed. So, Michael,
I want to get into this. And again, a few
(04:02):
months ago we were talking and again you're the CEO
of gen C, which is a major vitamin in supplement retailer.
But you said something that I thought was funny and
also true that we actually don't need supplements to be healthy.
And so most people are going to be like, sit
back and say.
Speaker 4 (04:21):
What, Yeah, well, you get down to it.
Speaker 6 (04:25):
And a lot of doctors will say this, right, if
I have tons of people I run into and they'll
say I spoke to a doctor and they said, you
don't eat supplements, and they're not completing the sentence because
they if you don't, if you eat you know, seven
serving suspinach, workout five times a week, make sure you
(04:47):
don't eat any process ultra processed foods. Stay as close
to being a vegetarian as possible, getting just to write
proteins that are clean. There's a lot of things you
can do, and if you of that perfect life, the
doctors are right, you don't need supplements. The problems for
the rest of us, and I include myself, from the
rest of us. I'm traveling, I'm in the airport ship.
(05:10):
Filay looks really really good right now. Should I have it?
Of course it meets some other needs that aren't purely
on the nutritional side. It's that satisfactions making the trip
feel good. Did I get all my sleep last night?
You know my plan was delayed. I only got five
hours sleep. I know I should get eight. I definitely should.
(05:31):
You know, I probably wouldn't have had any caffeine this
morning if I got all my sleep and everything else.
The problem is for the rest of us, life intervenes,
and so my point to folks is the doctors aren't
wrong when they say you don't need supplements, but the
question is can you live that lifestyle that allows you
to be there all the time. And then there's also
(05:52):
the other challenges. Right, we know soils are getting demineralized
over time, so yes, your grand probably had to eat
three or four apples they get enough magnesium. You probably
have to eat twelve or fifteen. Can you do that?
So the whole thought process is that the way the
life is in front of us, the stress that we have,
(06:13):
the inability for us to really live off the land
and eat all the right things all the time, means
the rest of us needs supplements. And I count of
that as there's always folks they bring up the well
when we tested thirty ultra cyclists who you know probably
have a nutritionist as well as a chef as well.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
As that's all they do. That's their jobs to stay healthy. Right.
Speaker 6 (06:38):
You can argue my job is probably stay healthy too,
but it's but I do that by taking a considered
amount of supplements. And I take them because I see
the science. I get the advantage. I have Rachel and
her team underneath, you know, seventeen super smart folks who
know everything about this category. And as they show me
all those different science on things. I keep taking more supplements,
(07:01):
so I counter the two things of you don't need
to take sultments. You for sure don't if you if
you can't live that perfect lifestyle, and you do want
to make sure you have the best health you can have.
I think seltments are a great way to get there.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
Yeah, yeah, and I agree with that. And really I
think supplementation is for everyone. Because of our diet. Now,
you know, the standard American diet, which is often on
the show, we call it the sad diet we were
talking about. I me know, most of most of us
are getting even if we're trying, we're still getting thirty
maybe forty percent of our foods that are processed.
Speaker 6 (07:37):
Yes, and also process I agree, and thirty forty is good, right,
That's great, absolutely, because if you think about this in
the way of like, well, I'm being good.
Speaker 4 (07:46):
I take care of my health, which I do.
Speaker 6 (07:47):
Like I eat, you know, I eat the healthy breakfast,
I eat my healthy lunch. I almost always get healthy,
make most of my dinners. But at the same day,
I can't you know, I'm at an event, raither be
at work early, something happened. It's just there's too many
bumps in the road, and when you reach out to
what's available for us, it is that is that ultra
(08:08):
process or high processed foods that's out there with sometimes
also ingredients you don't know. So it's you know, I
can't make my whole life about my health. I can't
make my whole life about my diet and everything else.
I have to do some things that are kind of
outside of the you know, perfect So that's where I
say seltments are fantastic because I know that whether I
(08:29):
am perfect every day, I'm still taking care of my
health in a good way.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely, And those those are all great points.
And luckily, you know, with places like GENC, there's there's
tons of options out there. There's there's many many options
out there for people that are trying to stay healthy.
So so what do you see that they're looking for
to improve improve their health and and hit hit their
goals right now? What do you see being some of
(08:54):
the some of the main main targets.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
Well, you know, we go after feet, folks.
Speaker 7 (09:00):
And I'll tell you know, if GNC and you think
people typically think about GNC as a person who's out
there lifting a lot and making and really you know,
in the gym.
Speaker 6 (09:12):
And to be honest, in the nineties, when I first
started shopping at GENC and I was buying my cretine,
that's what I was doing. I was lifting an hour
and a half every day and that was kind of
one of the key things I like to do. But
I think what we've realized, you know, where GNC definitely
is is that our customer is one who worries about
(09:32):
their health. They probably only work out, they probably only
lift once or twice, maybe four times they might, but
they also run and do yoga and do pick a
ball and walk their dog on the weekends.
Speaker 4 (09:45):
Right.
Speaker 6 (09:46):
So the reality is the core customer for us is
not the person who's in the gym every day. We
love them too, but it's really that person who every
day is worrying about their health. Every day is waking
up and saying, what choices can I make my health better?
That's our customer. Because as you said at the beginning
of the show, and I love why we're on the show,
(10:06):
we think of ourselves as real science, and we think
of ourselves as providing advice to those people who need advice.
You know, I always love talking about how you know
this category. The beautiful thing about this category is that
it keeps innovating. The bad thing about the categories it
keeps getting more confusing. Right, you go back few years
ago and there's like one or two magnesiums out there.
(10:26):
Now it's like seven different magnesiums, and it feels like
everybody's taking a new magnesium every other day.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
So how do you figure that out?
Speaker 6 (10:36):
Well, you can just punt and say I'm just gonna
take whatever the best seller shows of an Amazon probably
not your best choice. Or you can come and ask
somebody listen to your show, right, go out there search
on the internet and trying to get the best information.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
Joining us today is Michael and Rachel, the two executives
at GMC. You're listening to the Doctor Bob Martin Show.
Speaker 8 (11:00):

Speaker 10 (12:17):
What did you do with it?
Speaker 6 (12:20):
What did I do with it?
Speaker 9 (12:23):
What would I do with it?
Speaker 8 (12:27):
Got?
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Then I win?
Speaker 7 (12:31):
Rock you bout man, I win.
Speaker 11 (12:34):
Welcome back.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
You're listening to the Doctor Bob Martin Show on doctor
Adam Drockman and doctor Bob and I. We're all about
smarter living and helping you thrive naturally and becoming your
own best doctor. So remember, if you've got questions about
your health, you can call us anytime at eight hundred
six or eight eight two to two. That's where you
find doctor Bob and I to license positions, and we're
here and standing by to help you unlock your best self.
(12:56):
That's eight hundred six or O six eight eight two
to two. All right, we're talking with Michael Costello, he's
the CEO of GENC and Rachel Jones and she is
the the branding operator there at gen C. And before
the break, we were talking about how the sales associates
are trained at GNC to to better serve you and
(13:19):
find a personalized nutritional plan for you. And Michael, I
want you to kind of expand on that a little bit.
And and how are the GNC sales associates equipped to
help help the consumers.
Speaker 4 (13:32):
Yeah, so you know it goes back. You think about
the history of GENC.
Speaker 6 (13:37):
Right, if you go back a long ways back, GENC
used to have this big book sitting in the in
each store that explained all the different things and folks
who go into it and read all of the elements
and what could what you could take the different settlements for,
what was proven, what was suggested?
Speaker 11 (13:55):
You know.
Speaker 6 (13:56):
Now, we do a lot of video training on a
regular basis. We actually have all of our store coaches.
When they start, they go through about one hundred and
twenty hours of training, and as people have been here
for a while, they continually get training. Both we retrain
on different items, like we have a National Vitamin Week
and we'll go back and retrain on multi vitamins. Is
(14:16):
what they do and what they can do for you.
But then also as the science changes and new things
come out, we put out new videos, a lot of
it curated by Rachel and her team, but then that's
put out for the teams to read, understand, and take
a quick test at the end and then really.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
Help through that.
Speaker 6 (14:35):
And then we do we call role playing inside the
stores where we actually work with the coaches to talk
through how to talk to the customer in a very
empathetic way to understand what they're looking for and then
how we can solve those needs. But Rachel can expand
on how all the science shows up in.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
That training.
Speaker 5 (14:54):
Yes, So while I am a registered dietitian and nutritionist
by training, I have some nutritionists and scientists on my team.
We also have a lot of scientific partners at universities
and various health organizations. So the team's constantly staying on
top of the science, what's true, what isn't, looking at
myths and truths around nutrition, and then for all the
(15:17):
products and solutions that we carry, also really putting a
toolkit together of the science and also how to help
consumers pick what's best for them based upon their age,
their gender, their needs, their goals, and all of this
is fueling that education and that training for our coaches,
so that does equip them to work with people in store,
(15:40):
and you can even also chat with a coach online
as well to really ultimately land on what the best
solution is for you, if you think about it. We
have proteins an example, we have hundreds of skews, hundreds
of products of protein, right, but you have people that
could benefit from protein that are trying to lose weight.
You have people that could benefit from protein. We're just
(16:00):
concerned about healthy aging, and you have athletes coming in
wanting to understand what to do you know, before, during,
and after exercise. So the teams really making sure that
we're thinking about the variety of customers that come in,
the variety of products that we have, and really laying
out how to help customers side what's best for them.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
Yeah, and that's and again it's quite a quite a
bit different than what it used to be. I know,
I'll use example, I've went to gen C for for
years and years and years, even as a teenager. I
used to go in there and and study, uh, look
at look at the labels, see what was there. And
you know, Michael said, there's a there's a big book
in there, and uh. And again a lot of like
minded people back then, the sales associates were were always
(16:42):
pretty knowledgeable. But that is how that is how I
got my interest in in supplementation. Was through was through
going in the doors at GNC and looking looking around
and you know we're talking we're talking years and years ago,
and uh and Michael, you know that's a GENC has
been a staple for for people looking to live healthier
(17:02):
lives and supplement for years and years. And I think
you mentioned that GENC is heeled brating ninety years this year.
Speaker 6 (17:10):
It is, Isn't it crazy? Nineteen thirty five, Founded here
in Pittsburgh in the midst of the Great Depression. You know,
who would have thought that somebody, you know, had the
vision of understanding that health was so important that even
in one of the worst economic times, if the country's
ever felt that they could come up with this healthy.
Speaker 4 (17:29):
Food and people would flock to it. I think that.
Speaker 6 (17:32):
Shows that, you know, we're all worried about our health,
right and just we talked on in the beginning of
talking about how it's hard every day to stay there.
The one thing that Seltman's do for you when Genc
I think helps you is that we can help you
kind of cut through all the the noises out there
(17:53):
in settlements and really figure out what we can help
what you can help you do. You know, we always
talk talking about ourselves. We're not the main character, right jenc.
We're the side character. You're the main character in your
life and your health journey. We're there just to support
you as you make those choices.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Yeah, yeah, we say that often, you know, we're Our
goal on this show is to teach teach the listeners
to become their own best doctors. Most of the time
and whether that is you know, eating right and then
and then following that up again, we're talking about you know,
we may mention of ultra processed foods well, the typical diet.
I mean we're talking about sixty or seventy percent of
the diet for most people. So so we have to supplement,
(18:31):
we have we have to do those things to be
to be healthier, make sure that all everything is working properly.
And one of one of the big things that that
I know that I hear from listeners and even in
practice now is about the weight loss journeys and how
we can safely and effectively do that. And obviously GLP
(18:53):
ones that's the that's all the rage right now. But
also and it's good. We need people to get from
from the obesity to a healthy, healthy weight, but we
also need to make sure that they're getting what they
need in their diet. And then Rachel, you told you
were talking to me and you said something interesting about
that that GNC is running studies on these GLP ones
(19:17):
and how how does how does that fit in and
what are what are we finding out with some of
those studies.
Speaker 5 (19:23):
Yeah, so, so the first study we did was really
to get more information about when people are on GLP
GLP one medication, how is their nutritional intake? Right. So,
obviously these medications can help you lose weight because you
eat less, Okay, But what that means is the shortfalls
(19:44):
of key nutrients are even more dramatic than a general population.
So we did a study. We we took a look
at people on GLP ones. Every single one of them
were falling significantly short in protein, the amount of protein
you need to simply maintain lean muscle mass of falling short,
and key vitamins and minerals specifically vitamin D and magnesium
(20:05):
so important for bone health and general health, right, and
then also really falling short in fiber rich foods. So
this whole GLP one era, it's super interesting because it's
this realm of rapid weight loss through medication, very similar
to what we saw with bariatric surgery. But it begs
(20:26):
the question on what should that nutritional support look like
for patients looping to rapidly lose weight through these mechanisms
where you're completely suppressing your nutritional intake. And where we
have come in as GNC is really try to train
our associates and put content out there showing there are
(20:46):
protein solutions, there are fiber solutions, there are multi vitamin
and mineral solutions that ultimately can help you be more
successful on your health journey while you're taking a GLP
one and when you're coming off mm hm.
Speaker 3 (21:00):
And I just think that you know, gen C doing
all these all these studies is a key component in
that transparency and what people are looking for with supplementation
these days. I want to talk about that a little
bit more when we come back from break. We're talking
with Michael and Rachel, two executives at GNC. If you
want to find out more, head over to GNC dot com.
(21:22):
You're listening to the Doctor Bob Martin Show.
Speaker 12 (21:29):
Anyone can choose to make a difference. You can help
people succeed, rebuild after disasters, protect the environment, or feed
the hungry. Not only will you make a difference for others,
but for yourself. You can earn money for college, learn
career skills, and make friendships that last a lifetime. Make
(21:53):
a difference, choose your future, choose AmeriCorps.
Speaker 6 (22:00):
Are you waiting for the writing excuse?
Speaker 11 (22:03):
Are you waiting for you say.
Speaker 6 (22:05):
Shoes while you reading? It's the Chimesney, please studies.
Speaker 4 (22:20):
Find money you in.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
Welcome back, Doctor Adam Brockman here, and you're tuned into
the Doctor Bob Martin Show. And as we're navigating today's
health conversation, I want to remind you about our incredible
listener resources, one being our email health question form. If
you've got a health question or topic you'd liked us
to explore, just go ahead over to doctor Bob dot
com and submit your question through our easy use form
that's doctor Bob dot com. Spell out the word doctor
(22:49):
D O C T O R Bob dot com. And
remember you can always call our toll free hotline at
eight hundred six or six eight eight two two. That's
eight hundred six or six eight eight two two. All right,
we're talking with Michael Costello, the CEO of gen C,
and Rachel Jones, the CSO and head merchant at GNC.
And Rachel before we were before the break, we were
talking about clinical studies and how how gen C is
(23:13):
really involved with with making sure that they're safe and
effective products on the market. And and that's a and
I find that interesting because I don't know that everyone
is aware the GNC does that. In one of these
common misconceptions out there is that supplements are unregulated and
it's kind of like a wild West, so to speak,
of how products are made. How how do you explain
(23:36):
that for for the typical consumer that comes through.
Speaker 6 (23:39):
I'm going to jump in here a little bit for
in and all at Rachel jump because this this is
one that really really gets me upset. And I'll tell
you why we are regulated.
Speaker 4 (23:50):
People say we're unregulated.
Speaker 6 (23:51):
We actually de Shay is the law that's been that
sets all regulations for soltments. We have to put in
things in our claims. We have to be very clear.
We put in the bottle what we say is in
the bottle that it's lasts as long as we say
that it's supposed to last on the bottle, that we
don't put anything in there that's not declared that And
(24:13):
the rules and regulations are actually pretty strong. The challenge
is that the FDA does not have enough resources to
go after all the bad actors. So it's not that
it's unregulated, it's the fact that there are those out
there who are not fall in the regulations and the
FDA doesn't necessarily enforce those, especially when you go into
(24:33):
online marketplaces.
Speaker 4 (24:36):
Or a place like a.
Speaker 6 (24:37):
TikTok where you have things that can be up and down,
and there's some studies out there that like fifty to
seventy percent of the claims on TikTok are false. Now,
so where I go is like, should you find a
trusted brand? Yes, so I prefer that to B, G
and C, of course, But We're not the only trusted
brand out there. There's plenty of really good, solid brand
(25:00):
in this industry who follow the regulations, who follow all
the laws, who make sure that what they put in
the bottle is good, and I take some of those.
Would I take a flat by night version in this category? No,
But would you get your house built by a contractor
who didn't have a license.
Speaker 4 (25:17):
Probably not.
Speaker 6 (25:19):
So it is a little bit of you do pay
for what you what you get, and the regulated versions
the product the companies that follow all the laws are
typically a little bit more expensive, but you pay for quality.
Speaker 4 (25:33):
So I'm passionate.
Speaker 6 (25:34):
Sorry, I do get a littleassion about this because it's
because because I think if people understood the difference that
it is regulated, but they've got to trust the real
brands out there, they'd have a different, different view of
the industry, Rachel.
Speaker 5 (25:47):
Yeah, And at the end of the day, the regulations
are put in place to make sure that we are
offering safe supplements. We are, we are truthful and what
we label and what we claim right, and our team
of scientists and partners, we're dedicated to combing through that research,
identifying the best science, investing in clinical studies where we
(26:09):
need to ultimately live up to those regulations. You know,
so when you look at our multivitamins, for example, will
out that they're proven to work better than a basic multivitamin. Okay,
we are following the regulations when it comes to claim substantiation.
We invested in a clinical study compared our multivitamins to
basic multivitamins shown and we were able to show that
(26:32):
our multivitamins drive the nutrient levels in the body better
than a basic multi that you would get elsewhere with
lower levels, right, And we do the same in creatine
and protein and so on and so forth. So really,
at the end of the day, it just isn't true
that supplements aren't regulated. And Michael's absolutely right. There's different
(26:53):
brands and different teams that go above and beyond even
what the regulations require. Like we do a GNC to
ultimate Uh, you know, prove what we are offering is true,
is going to do what we say it's going to
do and ultimately help the consumer.
Speaker 3 (27:08):
Yeah. Yeah, I agree with both of you on on
that one. Something I'm pretty passionate about to because because
again is exactly what Michael said, You you pay for
what you get a lot of times because it does
for for these companies. Uh, you know, it costs money
to do the third party testing, the research that that
it takes, the studies that it takes, it takes with
(27:29):
that and that's and that's one of the things that
that really most of our listeners they need they need
to realize that. And Rachel, again with you being involved
with that, really on the on the forefront, what are
some of those those products or the studies, the categories
that that you're seeing that you're you're most excited about
(27:51):
and uh, and what what do you see the biggest
the biggest trends being here?
Speaker 5 (27:56):
Yeah, So number one is creating. Any of you may
understand creating as a supplement that's been around for a
long time. It's typically associated with supporting athletes and athletic performance.
But what the science has been showing us now for
quite some time, is creatings one of those supplements that
we all should probably be taking.
Speaker 6 (28:17):
Right.
Speaker 5 (28:17):
There's evidence in not only strength building and speed for athletes,
but maintainingly muscle mass as we are aging and making
sure that we are maintaining our strength right, things like
cognitive health, bone health, and what's interesting going back to
what Michael was talking about at the beginning of this, right,
when you take a look at the average intake of
(28:39):
our diets, most of us are getting less than five
hundred milligrams of creating a day through food because it
is found in food. But to get to the different
benefits that many of the consumers seek, we're at gram levels.
Know for strength the minimum of three grams, and the
cognitive benefits there's reports up to twenty grams. Right, So
(28:59):
at the end of the day, something like creating, we've
got awesome quality creating solutions. We have a G and C,
a variety of delivery formats. We've invested in some studies
on higher bioavailable forms, for example, where you could take
only two pills of one of our products and reap
the benefits of typical five grams of powder. We've got
gummies and chewable formats as well, and just really really
(29:22):
a privilege to be able to offer such an efficacious
supplement to consumers in various forms as that science evolves
and we could tell more people about the benefits. One
other area that I'm really really excited about as well.
I already mentioned our multi vitamins and the studies that
we have behind our gen C clinically studied multivitamins. We
(29:47):
also do a lot of business in our Vita Pact programs,
and what I love about our Vitapact programs is we've
had the experts do the thinking for you. We have
a variety of solutions by age, by under by goal right,
and it's basically in a convenient pack where you could
just take the supplements in that pack on a daily basis,
got your proven multivitamin. Most of them also have an
(30:09):
Omega three supplement plus goal specific supplements that you can
take in a convenient way. And just we are in
the midst of updating and upgrading all of our Vita
pack programs and super excited to bring those to market
very soon.
Speaker 3 (30:24):
Yeah, and Michael, I also want to get your your
opinion on this topic to what you're seeing with the
products when we come when we come back from break

Welcome back, doctor Adam Brockman here as we return to
the Doctor Bob Martin Show, America's number one health talk

and Rachel, two executives at CE at GNC, I want
to also remind you that your wellness journey continues even
when we're off air. First, our physician team is always

you can access our entire podcast library anytime at doctor
Bob dot com. There you can re listen to your
favorite episodes, catch up on shows you missed, or discover
new health insights, all available twenty four to seven at
doctor Bob dot com. All right, let's get back in
today's conversation. Michael, we were talking with Rachel when she
was talking about the third party studies, the sustainability, why
(34:57):
what makes these products that are coming in GNC that
you know what you're getting, and I know you want
to expand on that, so IM go ahead and let
you let you do that.
Speaker 4 (35:06):
Yeah, there's another point.
Speaker 6 (35:08):
I'm very passionate about it in a G and C.
So as Rachel and our team do a lot of
really good work on the GNC branded products right to
make sure we have clinical studies. We have clinical studies
and many of them. But now that the science in
Delsier is and the work that's put in place to
make sure that what we have in that product is
what it says and it does what we say it does.
(35:28):
We also look at our third party and these are
the other brands. And one of the things I'd love
to talk about, like we talk about creating, I take
creating every day.
Speaker 4 (35:36):
I love creating.
Speaker 6 (35:37):
I talk creating up to almost everybody because I think
everybody should be taking it out. But a lot of
people like to take gummies, right it's the newest, one
of the newest trends, and we always like to make
sure we have whatever way you'd like to take yourself
met available. But for longest time we didn't carry gummies
because we couldn't find any out there that actually had
the right amount of creating in them. Because creating in
(35:58):
a in a water, in a gun, any environment a
lot of times breaks down. So just is to give
your listener's confidence if you walked through G and C.
If you got a gummy off of on the marketplaces,
some of them have zero creating in them, or maybe
have some bad stuff in them, like creating others. The
(36:19):
ones we have, we've studied to make sure they have
this right amount of creating. When you buy them, they
have it all the way up to the expirer date
on the product, and you can you're going to know
that you were getting what's in there instead of just
a really sweet tasting piece of candy that you think
is going to do well for you. So that's one
of the things I'm most proud of our team that
our team really keeps science at the front, really make
(36:42):
sure so even though gummies were exploding, we were not
going to bring a gummy in until we could find
one that actually did what it said it.
Speaker 11 (36:48):
Would do.
Speaker 4 (36:50):
That just a bit.
Speaker 5 (36:52):
The other thing that we talked about earlier was regulation.
There are clear regulations around what ingredient ingredients you should
order shouldn't allow into a dietary supplement. We have a
no no list of over one hundred and fifty ingredients
that even when we're looking to bring products in if
any of those ingredients are present, because they don't comply
(37:13):
with the regulations, we don't bring the product in and
we provide advisement to the brands on what they need
to go do and when they've done it, they can
bring it back. But just to add on that, it
isn't just about our own brands. That's the brands that
we bring into have a rigorous screening process.
Speaker 3 (37:26):
Mm yeah, yeah, And that's and that's again that's one
of the one of the differences between the the TikTok shops,
the what what you're finding online in in GNC, and
that is I think one of the one of one
of the key points that I always talk about with
listeners when they're asking how they navigate the supplements, because
it because it is it's muddy, it's muddy water for
(37:48):
a lot of people. And that's why I think it's
so important for GNC the standard they set over the
ninety years. And and Michael, where do you see the
the industry moving forward over the few years. What consumers
are looking for obviously the gummies, but we don't need
them to be candy. We need them to be high quality.
Speaker 4 (38:07):
We need to have high quality, have the ingredients in them.
You know, one of the things I love the most.
Speaker 6 (38:14):
About this industry and having been, you know, a user
since the nineties is I believed a lot in the
nineties about how products was working because I was using
them and I felt it with my body. But now
the science has gotten so much better. The folks like
Rachel and our team, folks who study this and have
made a career now out of really bringing improving the science,
(38:37):
Ing and C and some other top quality brands around
in the industry. That you know, the amount of studies
on creatine, the amount of studies on multi vitamins, the
amount of studies that are just really and and the
data is clearer now, right, so I think multi vitamins
everybody said, hey, it doesn't help you live longer, but
we know, actually it doesn't. Uh, it only increases your
health span, your ability to be functional, which for me
(38:59):
is a huge win, right, the fact that I could
add two more years to my health span. I'm going
to die when I'm going to die, and I hope
it is as long as possible. But really, what I
want to do is enjoy my time here and do
the most things that I can do. And that's where
so you know, multivitamin is now I think it's a
much better claim. We improve your health span, not your lifespan,
(39:21):
right because people said, hey, if I took a multivitamin,
the bus still hits me, yes, but don't can you
live a better time period during that time period. So
for me, the biggest win over time is that science
is getting better and I think consumers are having better
access to that science than they ever did before. It's
not hidden in journals and someplace else. Shows like yourself,
(39:44):
other people on the industry out there talking about it,
and I think that's a beautiful thing for consumers to
have that knowledge at their fingertips, especially with Internet and chat,
GBT and every else they can go after to really
understand what's really real out there.
Speaker 3 (39:58):
Yeah, yeah, and I agree, I read completely with with that.
I think the what what we need to do, and
that's that's part of the process of the of the
show and even what you said with the sales associates
at GNC to to educate them when they're in there.
They can come in you know, listeners again, you can
go into gen C and you can say, hey, this
is what I'm trying to do. And one of the
big buzzwords longevity. You know what you what you said, Michael,
(40:21):
I want I want to be as healthy as I can,
as long as I can. That's that's the key. That's
the key to uh to most of of what we're
looking to do. UH as we as the science catches
up to the supplements that are on the aisle. So
folks again again, we're talking with Michael, the CEO of
G and C, and Rachel the the c s O
(40:42):
and the head merchant at GNC. And we got just
a little bit of time left UH and we'll join
them again after the break. You're listening to the Doctor
Bob Martin Show.
Speaker 16 (40:54):

Speaker 3 (42:58):
Yes, Welcome back to the Doctor Bob Martin Show. I'm
doctor Adam Brockman, and all right, folks, that's another hour
of the show and the books, and today we've covered
We've covered some ground from optimizing your health to navigating
the ever evolving landscape of supplements, and I want to
extend a huge thank you to our incredible guest today.
(43:20):
First to Michael Costello, the CEO of GNC. Michael, your insights,
today's trends in Genc's plan for the future our eye opening.
And to Rachel Jones, the CSO and head merchant of
gen C, thank you for sharing your expertise on how
to navigate the supplement asle and make the informed choices.
We really appreciate you both taking the time to be
(43:40):
with us today and and before. As we're wrapping up.
There's no one size fits all when it comes to supplements.
But but I'm curious out of uh, you know, what
are you guys? What's your go to supplements? What are
what's your what's in your supplement cabinet? And what are
you recommending to family and friends? Michael, we are you?
Speaker 8 (44:01):
You're you know?
Speaker 6 (44:01):
This is an interesting one because I actually take twenty
supplements and I do not recommend that level for anybody.
That requires a level of commitment. But part of my
problem is every time Rachel or some of our team
shows me the science on something new, I'm like, oh,
I got to take that too, So I keep adding it.
I do get asked this question a lot, and I
(44:22):
tell folks, take a very high quality multivitamin, take a
fish oil, take a magnesium. These are really hard for
you to get out of. Take a probiotic and selplement
with with granteine. If you're gonna do nothing else, that's
a good starter pack for every start on. And if
you're not, if you don't have one of those in
your mix right now, you should add to it. And
(44:43):
so I tell folks, once you get to that starter
pack right which I think covers you know, a bunch
of the basic needs, it really allows you to then
if you you know, as you start feeling better about it,
and you want to get more and more into seltlements.
You can start adding to that. You know, could be
adding a protein for those of us who need protein,
could be adding you know, very specific things like a
tea booster or promonal support as we age. But I'd
(45:07):
start with that starter pack and then build on it
based on your personal needs. And I would say, come
into GENC and ask.
Speaker 4 (45:12):
Us about it.
Speaker 6 (45:12):
If you have a question and you're trying to solve something,
come in and talk to us.
Speaker 4 (45:16):
And if you do it right now.
Speaker 6 (45:18):
You know Black Friday deals, We've got a lot of

There are different ones are announced for each weekend. But
come in and visit us, get your ninety cent drink,
and talk to us about what needs you have.
Speaker 3 (45:36):
All right, all right, and Rachel again, we only got
a minute or so left. And what's in your meta?
Are your your supple in my cabinet? Alwaysn't. I don't
like to call them medicine cabinets. I call him somepthlem
my cabinets.
Speaker 5 (45:46):
Yeah, I agree with Michael. What's in mind for a
healthy foundation is a multi vitamin, official oil, a probiotic,
and I also have creatine. But my husband also, he
is very athletic and has some austio arthritis from his joint,
so he's got a joint health supplement in our cabinet.
And I have a teenage son who's all about the
creating and the protein too as he's rounding out his
football season. But totally agree with everything Michael said. We've
(46:10):
got a lot of expertise at GENC that could help
people find what should be in their cabinets and help
them live well.
Speaker 3 (46:15):
All right, Well, well Michael and Rachel, thank you very much.
I appreciate your insights Today. Again, folks head over to
GNC dot com and take advantage of their specials that
they have there for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Every
little bit counts, So thank you for tuning in to
the Doctor Bob Martin Show. Until next time, stay healthy,
stay happy, and keep striving for your best selling This
