(04:57):
in disengagement. Uh, you know, because it's not just this
gen z on the line, it's everyone. These systemic patterns
they ripple through families and workplaces every day, and today

And what can we do to change the narrative? Starting
right now, Stay tuned, stay engaged, because the Doctor Bob
Martin Show is rolling out the red carpet for critical thinking,
practical health wins in a community that's defining what real

(06:05):
wellness means today and for every generation to come. Let's
go ahead and dive into one of the most shocking
health contradictions of our time that should have every parent
educator in young adults sitting up and taking notice? Did
you know that Generation Z, the same generation that's obsessed
with protein powders, wellness influencers in claiming to prioritize health

(06:30):
over money and career, is actually becoming the heaviest generation
in modern history. Isn't a statistic that we can just
brush off. This is a health crisis that's hiding in
playing sight, and it's wrapped in instagram worthy smoothie bulls
and fitness challenges. So I want to paint you a
picture that's both troubling and eye opening. We have a

(06:53):
generation that's simultaneously more health conscious in more unhealthy than
ever before, and the implications for their future and even
for our healthcare system are staggering. The numbers they tell
a story that contradicts everything we see on social media.
Obesity rates among sixteen to twenty four year olds have

(07:15):
skyrocketed from around thirty percent in two thousand and two
to almost forty percent in twenty twenty two. And here's
the kicker. Over fifty six percent of young Americans age
eighteen to twenty five are now classified as overweight or obese,
despite sixty percent claiming that they prioritize a healthy lifestyle

(07:36):
over money, career in personal enjoyment. This isn't just about
vanity or fitting into clothes. We're talking about a generation
that's setting themselves up for diabetes, heart disease, joint problems,
and even a shortened lifespan while posting about their latest
detox tea in their workout routine. This is a paradox

(07:59):
that it becomes even more alarming when you realize that
gen Zers actually drink less alcohol, they smoke fewer cigarettes,
and they use fewer recreational drugs than previous generations. These
behaviors we typically associate with better health outcomes, Yet the
gen Zers, they're experiencing unprecedented rates of mental health challenges,

(08:23):
reported disabilities, and physical health problems that should have all
of us asking what is going on. As a practitioner,
a health practitioner who's worked with thousands and thousands of
patients across multiple generations, I can tell you that the
answer isn't simple, but it's absolutely critical that we understand

(08:44):
it because gen Zers are at risk of becoming what
experts are calling the left behind generation when it comes
to health, and the culprit isn't just one thing. It's
this perfect storm of factors that create the a thief
that's robbing these young people of their vitality while convincing
them that they're doing everything right. So first, let's talk

(09:08):
about the social media wellness trap that's scrambling their understanding
of genuine health. Nearly seventy two percent of Gen Z adults,
they turn to social platforms to learn about health topics,
where they're bombarded with influencer promotions on say, protein obsessions,
extreme diets, and fitness challenges that focus on appearance rather

(09:31):
than sustainable health. I've seen patients in my clinic who
can recite the protein content of nearly every food they eat,
but they can't tell me when the last time they
had a genuine conversation with a friend without looking at
their phone, or when they last walked anywhere instead of
driving or being driven. And the second massive factor is

(09:54):
the sedentary lifestyle epidemic that's affecting this generation more severely
than ever before, with exercise rates actually declining among Gen
Z from twenty nineteen to twenty twenty two, with fewer
than half of the individuals aged eighteen to twenty five
engaging in physical activity at least once a week during

(10:15):
the first three months of twenty twenty two, and despite
their obsession with posting jim selfies in fitness content. So
think about this for a moment. We have a generation
that's more likely to research the perfect pre workout supplement
than to actually work out consistently, and more likely to
follow a specific diet than to move their bodies regularly,

(10:37):
and more likely to track their macronutrients than to track
their daily steps or their sleep quality. So, folks, this
is a critical conversation that we need to have and
there's more to this story. So when we come back,
we're going to get right back into it again. You're
listening to the Doctor Bob Martin Show. If you are

(11:00):

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Welcome back. We hope you took that time today. Get
a quick breather, maybe stretch, hydrate, or even jot down
some of your own wellness goals. You're listening to the
Doctor Bob Martin Show, and I'm doctor Adam Brockman and
Doctor Bob and I we're all about smarter living and
helping you thrive naturally and teaching you to become your
own best doctor most of the time. And if you've
got questions about your health or the topic we're discussing today,

(13:06):
our toll free hotline is open at eight hundred six
zero six eight eight two to two. Again, that's eight
hundred six zero six eight eight two to two. All right,
let's get back in today's conversation. We're talking about gen zers.
Despite all these health trends that they're they're a part of,
are more healthy or are more unhealthy and overweight than ever?
We're talking about these critical pieces of this puzzle. And

(13:29):
the third one being is that the food environment that
we're navigating, that's all of us, not just gen zers.
You know, gen zers in particular, they're trying to avoid
alcohol and cigarettes, but they're also swimming in the sea
of ultra processed foods, energy drinks, in convenient meals that
are engineered to be addictive and consumed when they're staring

(13:53):
at their screens. I've had twenty two year old patients
tell me that they've never cooked a meal from scratch,
they've never eaten a meal without entertainment, and they've never
experienced genuine hunger because they're constantly snacking on processed foods
that they you know, processed foods, they spike your blood

(14:13):
sugar and they leave you with more cravings throughout the
day and within just even a few minutes. So that's
one of the factors. And another factor is that it's
absolutely devastating. The disgeneration is the has all these mental
health crisis is that they're often masked by their wellness

(14:34):
performance on social media. We're seeing unprecedented rates of anxiety, depression,
and disorders, you know, like just to disconnect with from
society or what we call this, you know a word
for this big orexia. It's you know, this overweight that
we're looking at social media and where where it's a

(14:55):
self image problem that we're having. And this is even
not just a female thing. This this particularly among young
men who have become obsessed with weight training supplement use,
in skipping meals while withdrawing socially, they create this dangerous
cycle that undermines both their mental in their physical health.

(15:16):
So here's what's really concerning to me as a healthcare provider.
Over forty percent of Gen Z consumers find it challenging
to stay motivated to exercise, which is higher than a
round that thirty percent that's average across the board for everyone,
and more than a third Gen Z ors they struggle

(15:38):
to manage their weight despite having more access to health
information than any generation in history. This trust gap is
equally alarming. Only sixty three percent of Gen Z adults
trust their primary care provider. That's a lot or somewhat,
which is twelve percent lower than the rest of you

(16:00):
as adults, meaning they're getting their health guidance from TikTok
influencers instead of trained professionals who understand the complexity of
human health. Now, before you think I'm just here to
sand the alarm without offering solutions, let me share what
I've seen working in practice the last few years and

(16:21):
what every listener can start implementing today, whether you're a
gen Z or yourself, or you're trying to help a
young person in your life break free from these patterns. First,
we need to shift the conversation from restriction and performance
to nourishment and movement for joy instead of asking how

(16:43):
many grams of protein did I get, we need to
ask how did this meal make me feel? And what
movement brings me energy rather than exhaustion. Second, we need
to address the screen time elephant that's in the room.
We need to establish phone for zones and times, in
particular during meals within an hour before bed because the

(17:06):
constant stimulation is disrupting our sleep. The ability to recognize
hunger and fullness cues, and even a capacity for genuine
social connection that's essential for mental health. And third, we
need to teach practical life skills that somehow get lost
in this wellness noise. How to cook simply there's nutritious meals,

(17:31):
how to shop for real food instead of products, and
how to distinguish between genuine hunger and emotional eating. And
how to find physical activities that actually we enjoy rather
than just exercise that we think we need to do.
And fourth, we need to help the gen zers develop

(17:53):
what I call health literacy, the ability to evaluate health information,
understand that their worth isn't tied to their appearance or
their adherence to the latest wellness trend, and to recognize
that true health is about those consistent small changes the
sustainable practices rather than perfection in extreme measures. The good

(18:18):
news is that gen Z they have incredible potential. They're
more environmentally conscious, they're more socially aware, and they're more
willing to question conventional wisdom than previous generations, which means
they can absolutely turn the ship around if we give
them the right tools and the support. I've worked with

(18:40):
hundreds of young patients who's transformed their health not by
following the latest influence or the diet or their latest
fitness challenge, but by learning to listen to their bodies,
prioritizing sleep and stress management, finding movement they love, and
building genuine connections with people who support their well being

(19:02):
rather than just their performance. The key is helping them
understand that true wellness isn't about perfection, optimization, or looking
a certain way. It's about building a life that supports
their energy, their mental clarity, their relationships, and their long
term vitality. So if you're listening and you're part of

(19:25):
gen Z, or you have someone in your life who is,
I want you to know that you have the power
to write a different story for your health, starting right
now today, with the next choice you make about what
you eat, how you move, or how you spend your time.
This generation doesn't have to be that left behind generation.

(19:45):
They can become the generation that figures out how to
navigate our modern world while protecting to their own health
nourishing their health. But it's going to require these honest
conversations and practical squize skills that they need to develop
in a willingness to prioritize genuine well being over wellness

(20:06):
performance from influencers. And that transformation starts with each of
us taking responsibility for our own health and supporting the
young people in our lives to do the same. All right, well,
thanks for sticking with us today on this important topic
as we're peel back that curtain on gen Z's wellness paradox.

(20:27):
In gen Z, despite prioritizing health and cutting back on smoking, drinking,
and drugs, they face skyrocketing rates of obesity, chronic stress
in the mental health struggles, not because they don't care,
but because modern life has hijacked these habits. Too. Many
young adults are swapping real food and movement for Instagram

(20:49):
health trends, ultra processed meals, and endless screen time, all
while feeling isolated and overwhelmed. The solution isn't harder workouts
or stricter diets. Return into the basics, savoring real food,
moving for joy, logging off at meal time, and connecting
with real people beyond the apps. So if you're a

(21:11):
gen Zer or care about someone who is, remember, true
wellness isn't about that perfection or the viral trends. It's
about consistency, self awareness and compassion. Let's champion sleep, stress management,
and the critical thinking. Just one step, one conversation, one
healthy meal at time. Gen Z's story isn't written in stone.

(21:35):
With our help, the community, knowledge and genuine support, this
could be the generation that flips that script on modern health.
Let's help them in ourselves make it happen. All right, folks,
when we come back, we're going to get to some
of your questions. You're listening to the Doctor Bob Martin show, waiting.

Speaker 7 (22:00):
On a lightning stake?

Speaker 2 (22:02):

Speaker 7 (22:18):
Don't you beat another many?

Speaker 8 (22:24):
Honey?

Speaker 2 (22:25):
You waing folks, welcome back. You're listening to the Doctor
Bob Martin Show. I'm doctor Adam Bruckman, and folks, we're
about to get to your caller questions. If you've got
a question, give us a call at eight hundred six
zero six eight eight two to two. That's a Doctor
Bob Martin Show caller hotline. That's eight hundred six zero
six eight eight two to two. Before we get into
your questions, I want to talk about something that doesn't

(22:48):
get nearly enough airtime, and that's your oral health. You
might think of brushing and flossing as basic hygiene, but
did you know that your mouth is a frontline defender
for your overall wellness. It's true. Oral health can impact
everything from your heart to your immune system. And that's
why I'm a big fan of the Spry Dental Defense System.

(23:10):
Now this isn't just another toothpaste on the shelf. Spry
is a science based suite of solutions that takes your
mouthcare up a notch, making it easier than ever to
keep your smile in your body truly healthy. Let's get
into the why. The secret in ingredient in Spry is xylatol.
That's a natural sweetener that does a lot more than

(23:33):
just taste good. Every time you use Spry toothpaste, you
swish with Spry mouthwash, or you pop a piece of
Spry gum, or even they're mints, you're actually feeding your
oral defenses. Why because xylotol works by starving the bad
bacteria in your mouth. These bad bacteria, the troublemakers, thrive

(23:53):
on sugar and they churn out acids that erode your enamel,
but xylotol puts them out of At the same time,
xylotol stimulates saliva, which acts like your body's natural mouth rents.
It helps to keep clean away those food particles, and
it neutralizes acids before they do damage. Spry's approach is

(24:15):
all about synergy. Their toothpaste is fluoride free but packed
with xylotol. Their alcohol free mouth washed sues your gums
without those harsh chemicals, and their gum and mints let
you keep up with that protection wherever you go. I'll
be honest, My dental visits have never been smoother since
I started using the full Spry system. If you want

(24:37):
to know my routine, I use Spry toothpaste and mouth wearings.
I follow that by a piece of gum after meals.
That simple combo helps me bust up bad breath, protect
my enamel, and it also keeps plaque from ever getting
a foothold on your teeth. And you don't have to
look very far to get started. Spry is available at CVS, Target, Sprouts,

(25:02):
natural grocers, and other familiar stores. Wherever you shop, there's
a Spry product ready for you. If you're interested in
learning more about the science behind the smile, head over
to Clear dot com that's spelled x L e a
r dot com, where you'll find everything about the Spry
system in the equally popular Clear nasal sprays. So, if

(25:25):
you want to rethink oral care not as a chore,
but as an investment in yourself, a genuine defense system
right inside your bathroom cabinet, go Spry and go healthy
your teeth. Your dentist in your future self will thank
you the Spray dental defense system. All right, let's get
to some color questions again. If you want to join

(25:48):
in this conversation, call us at eight hundred six zero
six eight A two two Again, it's eight hundred six
zero six eight A two two. First up, we have
and from Mount Vernon, Iowa, Hi.

Speaker 8 (26:00):
This is and from Mount Vernon, Iowa, and I would
like to know if you have any suggestions for kidney stones,
how to not get them, if there's some supplement that
could be taken to help reduce them. Just received my

(26:22):
first one back in January, and I just would like
to make sure not to ever have that happen again.
There's still a little bit there that the doctor has
to go and remove, but I would just like to
know what can be done to not have kidney stones.
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (26:42):
Okay, great question, and thank you for calling in from
Mount Vernon. Kidney stones they hurt, right, and you're not alone,
and they're more common than people think, and the risk
of reoccurrence is real if we don't take action. So
here's what we need to know. Prevention is all about
making your body as in hospital to those stone formations

(27:04):
as possible. The good news many strategies are simple, safe,
and they fit right into everyday life. First up, let's
talk about water. Now, that's your best friend. Staying well
hydrated is the single most effective thing you can do.
Aim for enough water so that your urine is light
yellow or clear. For most folks that's at least two

(27:26):
to three leaders. So think about eight to twelve cups
a day. So if you make that a habit, a
water bottle on hand at all times, preferably one that
is BPA free, And next up, your diet matters. If
your stones are the most common type, like the calcium oxalate,

(27:50):
try to limit high oxalate foods like spinach, beets, almonds,
and chocolate. Now you don't have to cut them out completely,
but balance and portion size are key. At the same time,
don't skimp on calcium. In fact, getting calcium from foods
like yogurt or cheese during meals can actually help because

(28:11):
it binds with oxalates in the gut and it prevents
the absorption of those oxalates. So if you cut back
on some of those oxalies, you cut back on salt
and added sugars, as both of those can ramp up
stone risk too. Now as far as supplements go, and
again you may check with your doctor if you're working

(28:32):
with a healthcare provider on the kidney stones, especially since
you should be being monitored magnesium and vitamin B six.
They both have evidence of lowering risk in those that
are prone to those oxalate stones. A typical starting point
is magnesium citrate about two hundred to four hundred milligrams

(28:53):
per day, Envitamin B six and about fifty ten to
fifty milligrams for that daily. But again work with your
healthcare provider for your personalized plan. Some people they benefit
from potassium citrate or even other natural sources of citrates
like lemon or lime juice in your water. It can

(29:14):
help keep that you'urine less acidic and less favorable for
stone formation. And one last thing and if you're prone
to stones, limit high dose vitamin C as that can
increase oxalate formation in some people. So summary for everyone
that's listening. Hydrate hydrate, use moderate salt and sugar, get

(29:37):
balance balance in calcium, and talk to your healthcare provider
before starting a supplement plan to make sure that you're
doing the right thing. So stay strong with this and
thanks for opening up on this topic. It's a good
question for everyone, and anyone with a question or a
personal experience, I invite you to give us a call
at eight hundred and six zero six eight A two
to two or check for more resources at doctor Bob

(30:01):
dot com. All right, so we're coming up on a break,

we have a telehealth hotline or a telehealth service and

Don Welcome back to the Doctor Bob Martin Show. I'm
doctor Adam Brockman, and we're here every week guiding you
through the latest evidence, answering your health questions, and spotlighting
hidden solutions that might be game changers for your well being.
If you ever wondered about alternatives to mainstream medications, especially

(34:55):
when it comes to your mood, today's next question is
for you. We received a great question from Mary in Texas.
Mary heard me mention an herbal remedy that was studied
in the New England Journal of Medicine alongside in a
depressants like Lexapro and zoloft, but missed the name. And
so here is Mary's question.

Speaker 9 (35:16):
Mary. Last week, last Sunday night, a week ago, doctor
Groffman mentioned very effective that had the Journal of New
England Medicine had done a trial with lexipro and zoloft

(35:39):
and this particular herb was just as effective. And he
said it, but when he spelled it, I couldn't understand it.
All is why is why is in yellow? And then
I thought it was the Oh, but I don't think
that's correct, and then ju so it's why and yella

(36:03):
question mark, question mark JS and juice you as an uncle,
I wanted to get the correct name of the herb
and how you how and where you can purchase it?

Speaker 2 (36:17):
Thank you very much, all right, Mary, thank you for
your call. The herb I reference is called you Ju
and it's spelled why you e Ju again, that's why
you e ju Ju. It's a classical herbal formula from
traditional Chinese medicine and it's been used for centuries for

(36:38):
mood support and emotional balance. It's a blend of botanicals,
uh and it also it's a formula that is specifically
created to help the body and brain restore balance. So
here's what's exciting. Recent modern studies, including that one that
we highlighted on the show in the New England Journal
of Medicine have compared you ju to leading in a depressant,

(37:00):
and the results for mild to moderate depression you jew
was it was as effective or similarly effective to both
likes ofpro and Zoloft, with the added benefit of fewer
side effects like drowsiness or sexual dysfunction. And that's huge,
especially for people who are sensitive to medications or they're
looking for gentler natural options. So how does it work?

(37:24):
In simple terms, the botanicals in ujuw help modulate neurotransmitters.
Those are the chemical messengers in your brain that affect mood, motivation,
and energy. And instead of blasting your system, youjuw gently
nudges your body back to homeostasis or balance, helping lift
low mood, improve energy, and ease feelings of being stuck emotionally.

(37:49):
So many practitioners also use it for symptoms that overlap
with mild anxiety or emotional fatigue. Now, in my own practice,
I've seen patients you either didn't tolerate pharmaceutical as well
or simply wanted a more holistic path, and for some
incorporating youju either as part of a supervised integrative plan

(38:10):
or temporarily making lifestyle changes. It made a real difference.
They felt more emotionally stable and they reported improve mental clarity,
often without the side effects they that you fear with medications.
But let's also be clear rbal isn't always risk free
like prescription drugs. Botanicals can interact with medications, and they

(38:33):
can affect your liver enzymes, and they aren't suitable for
every single person. So always always check with a healthcare provider,
especially if you're already on antidepressants or other mood or
later related medications. And if you're interested in trying you
jew make sure you work with a skilled herbalist or
a licensed integrative practitioner. They'll be able to ensure that

(38:57):
you get a quality product in the right dosage for you.
Don't just grab the first bottle that you see online herbs.
They should be sourced from reputable providers and companies who
test for purity and potency. And for listeners who want
to dig more into the science, head over to doctor
Bob dot com after the show in that you can

(39:17):
re listen to the episode on this study from the
New England Journal. And if you are struggling with mood,
the best first steps as far as being holistically minded
is to scheduled movement outdoors, prioritize sleep, and eat colorful,
nutrient rich foods. And whether you choose medications, herbs, or

(39:38):
a combination, the goal is to always fully support your body.
You do might offer an option for some, but the
real solution includes talking and not just supplements. So again,
connect with friends, family, or a trusted provider about how
you're feeling. Mary, thank you for the sharp ear on

takeaways from today. We put gen Z under the microscope,
not to judge, but to understand what's beneath the headlines.

(43:30):
Today we learn that for all those so called wellness
wisdoms out there, the less booze, the less smoking, more
fitness bands than wristwatches, gen Z is the biggest generation
yet when it comes to the waistline, nearly forty percent
of young adults are now considered obese. And those stats

(43:50):
aren't just numbers. They're warning signals about the health trajectory
of our future workforce, our friends, and our loved ones.
But we also impact the why behind the shock value
you heard about screen time, ultra processed foods, the stress vortex,
and dishing engagement from healthcare and that's outpaced the kale

(44:12):
the CrossFit. In the mental health hashtags, we called out
policies that missed the mark and reminded everyone no generation
is immune from marketing, misinformation or the modern lifestyle squeeze.
But here's where we chart a different course from the
doom and gloom cycle. Today's conversation was not about blame.

(44:34):
It's about reclaiming at home, at the office, in the classroom,
and inside every one of us. As we turn insight
into action, Let's do it with optimism. Your do now
habit for the week is get moving. Literally, add just
ten minutes of walking, playing, or stretching to your day,
