Episode 16: Neuer Zollof

Passing the studios of the “Westdeutschen Rundfunk” (WDR) (radio station) we will reach the “Neuen Zollhof” (new customs yard).The group of three high-rises created by Canadian-American designer and architect Frank Gehry is as controversial as the rest of the architecture at the “Medienhafen” (median harbour). The project’s official name is “Neuen Zollhof” (new customs yard), but the natives leisurely call it the “Gehry-structures”.Different materials, multi-coloured facades and different height asymmetric elements have been combined to form a unit despite the differences. The focal point is the silver façade of the centre building, which reflects the other two buildings. The “Gehry-structures” have become a new and unmistakable landmark of the city long ago
