Heine was a renowned German journalist, writer and poet, who was born in the now obsolete house at the back of Bolkerstraße 53 in 1797. He often astounded his readers with his original Rhenian mentality and open demeanour. He was considered “the last romantic poet” and some say that he made everyday language suitable for lyrics. In his book “Ideen. Das Buch Le Grand” (Ideas. The Book Le Grande), he described his native city as follows: “Düsseldorf is a quite beautiful city and if you think of it, and if you were incidentally born there, you will feel nostalgic. I was born here and I feel like I have to return home immediately and when I say “return home” I’m speaking of Bolkerstraße and the house I was born in...”At Heine’s time it was a guesthouse here. Upon its restoration in 2006, it now accommodates a book store and literary cafe. A memorial plaque above the entrance reminds us of the city’s famous son. It is a cultural island on the party-mile.
