(00:00):
In today's podcast, I'm going tobe talking about ten essential tools that I
wouldn't be without, and maybe ifI had to travel somewhere, I would
definitely take these ten tools with us, and most likely take some other tools
of us, but had a push, these would be the ten tools I
(00:20):
would take with us. So alittle bit earlier, maybe about half an
hour to go forty five minutes ago, I was actually just putting the finish
on this shake our style shelf I'vejust finished up. And when I was
putting the finish on, I thought, in myself, could have actually build
something like this, you know, with ten tools and thinking about it,
(00:43):
I could. So I thought i'dgo over some of the tools that I
would use to build something like thisand maybe just give a few reasons why
I've picked the tool. I'm notgoing to go into depth about it,
obviously I would be here for ifI did, but I'm just going to
give a very brief overview of why. First up would be the Aoba saw.
(01:07):
I mean, come on, ifjust if you haven't got one of
these, you really need to getour aoba soa the really so versatile I
wouldn't be without one. The reasonswhy I would pick this, and this
has probably been my number one pick. This most likely the way my mind
(01:27):
works, This would be the firstthing I picked from the wall to take
it with us if I was goingsomewhere. So you can rip cup with
one of these, and you cancross cup with one of these. That's
just by looking at it. Youknow, anybody that does a little bit
of woodwork and would know that,so what some people don't know quite a
(01:47):
lot of people. Actually, youcan actually cut circles out with these.
I've done it. There's videos ofus actually down this and the videos of
us cutting their curves as well.Check them out. They're on me Instagram
on the YouTube channel. There isa video called somewhere along the lines of
making a bedside table, and inthat video I actually use this saw.
(02:09):
I think it's actually the same blade. I think to cut a full circle
out with it. So it isvery possible also put a lot of curves
with this, not a problem. You can also do some fine joinery with
it. Believe it or not, there is there is some limitations with this,
(02:30):
but you can easily cut some dovetails with it. I wouldn't hesitate
it all. Cut some dove tailswith it. Don't get us wrong,
I've got dedicated I've got two dedicateddove tails so here that I do use
four dove tailing. But I hada push, I'd easily use this and
I would be okay with the resultsof it. The results are very reasonable.
(02:52):
That goes with other giants, motorsand tanning joints. Obviously, the
tenant joint cutting the cheeks not aproblem with this, so as far as
I'm concerned, and again this isonly my opinion, and this is one
of my top ten tools. Isthat it's worth itsween in gold. And
(03:13):
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this toanyone. So there is a bit of
a caveat to these sores. Youdo have to learn how to use one,
especially if you've been using the lakesof Western SOEs things like that.
Next on the list is a numberfour smoving plane. You can do quite
(03:34):
a lot with a number four, believe it or us. So when I
first started wouldworking, before I hadmy number number five japlines, I've actually
got two there. I learned howto actually straight their users to straighten an
edge GM if I was going todo, you know, some kind of
jointing if I was joining boards togale glue up anything from a meet,
(04:00):
and I've even done it all overup there. I think six seven foot
I might have even done it footone time. Believe it or not.
Again, you do have to learnhow to do that sort of thing,
but it is possible. I've doneit for quite a few years. Another
thing you can do with these isput champas on stuff. Very easy.
(04:21):
These are super simple to use toput champas on, same as roundnova as.
You can do a nice roundova withone of these. You can round
if you're making some sort of tableleg something like that. It's very easy
to round ov out with one ofthese. Again, you don't have to
learn how to use it. Andobviously smoothing you know, you can get
(04:43):
by quite well with one of these. So I would definitely recommend none of
my foot to anyone who maybe isjust starting in woodwork and really really good.
I would also recommend that he getssome sort of after the marke with
blade. You have to mark withblades again, in my own opinion or
absolutely excellent and I think the farsuperior to the the original blades. The
(05:09):
original blade that was in this.It wasn't in bad nick, but because
it's so thin, I find thatthere was just a bit too much chatter
off on my light. And soI've got the after mark with blade which
this is actually a hot blade.I've got hot blade in me number four,
me number five. I also believeI've got one in the Spokeshave,
(05:33):
Yes, I have. I've gotone on New Spokeshave as well. So
if you're able to, if theif your finances allow you to, I
definitely get an after mark. It'sit's not a must, but I think
it's worth it. Next up wouldbe the Humble card scraper. So the
(05:54):
card scraper, it can be anabsolute savior when you've got some really bad
brain. You might be using yoursmooth and plane and you might just be
getting a lot of tear out.So you know, sometimes it's just better
just to pick up a card scrapeand it will sort it out straight away.
If you've got grawly grain, theseare really good. I use this
(06:17):
on absolutely everything. I use thison on table legs, I use it
on boards, you know, obviouslymaking furniture anything like that. These coming
really really handy. You can makethese. These can be made from old
sore blades. You can buy themnothing that like, maybe you want five
pounds buy If that, I'm notoverly sure. I can't remember the last
(06:42):
The last time I bought wanted touse it was quite a while ago,
but the lasts a pretty long time. But again, so cheap, you
know what. I really think everybodyshould have one of these. I did
actually deal with video about the cardscrape. I think I should be due
out in the next couple of weeks. Anyone interested in learning how to shop
(07:03):
and and use one of these, keep an eye out for that. Next
up is a combination square, SoI did think about this long and hard.
I like combinations squares, but Ihave to be honest. One of
(07:25):
the squares I use the most isprobably the speed square. Believe it or
not, I wouldn't really consteller thisfour fine jinery, you know, cutting
join some whatever else, but i'dactually use it for that. I think
it's great to find angles if weuse it for a number of things.
(07:45):
I just think they're really really handy. And I was nearly going to put
this in the list, but Ithink for the majority of people, the
combinations squares, it's going to bemore practical. You can pull multiple parallel
lines. So if anyone that doesn'tknow, you'd actually put the edge to
(08:07):
the work piece, put a pencilthe ruler, obviously you'd have where you're
more than wants to go, andyou can just pull a line with a
pencil. Obviously you've got ninety degreesand you've got forty five degrees. So
these are these are really really good. I don't still use this, but
(08:28):
as I said, I don't tendto use a speed square more. Another
thing, another thing I have starteda using, just while we're on the
subject, as one of these guys, I'm not actually sure I have the
correct name for it. Anybody knowsthe correct name for this, put it
in the comments. So this isreally handy, especially I find when I'm
marking out for joanary. If I'mmarked out for maybe some housing joint and
(08:54):
I've got to go on the otherside, on the edge of the board,
you know, just to take meline down, or maybe a tenant.
I find it good for that sortof thing, or even just squaring
all the way around. Maybe I'myou know, I need I need to
cut something, and I need itto be precise, you know, maybe
you have to finish up with alittle smooth and playing afterwards, just to
(09:15):
make the edge nice and flush.I find that really handy for the you
know, to follow the knife fallround. But as I said, the
combination of square has to pay thepick. Next up is a motors gauge.
(09:37):
So the motors gauge. I've hadthis one for since I was maybe
seventeen years old. I'm now fortythree years old, so I've had this
for quite some time. And youknow, for the likes of motors and
tenant joints. Obviously that's you know, that's what's designed for. So it's
(10:00):
got the two pins on this.Obviously, you pull them to the size
of your motors wall. You setthe defence with the thumbscrew, and you
pull your lines. Also on theother side, it does have a pin
as well, so you can dolike a single line for whatever reason.
You may be ripped down a boardand you may just want to consistent line
(10:24):
all the way down, so maytypically I wouldn't use this for that,
but I don't know. There's alot of old school joiners and maybe some
new school joiners that actually do usethat. Me personally, I wouldn't I
just use the combination squaring a pencil. But as I said, this is
great for repeatable tenant joints. Ifyou are I don't know, if you
(10:48):
are building something and you had maybeit doesn't tenants to cut. This is
just going to be a winner, similar as that. Next up is a
bat and knife. So over howevermany years I've been thinking with wood,
I have tried multiple marketing knives andthis is probably the best. This is
(11:11):
the Stanley Potman knife. This wasrecommended by Paul Selasa's where are seeing this?
And Paul got to bang on thisis absolutely excellent. It's nice,
small compact, It gets you inthe nice tight corners when you need to
get that knife wall in. Thisis absolutely essential for marking out for motors
(11:35):
and tanning joints, housing joints, even the shoulder line on dovetails, things
like that. If there's anyone that'snear like hand tool would work. And
if you're aren't using some sort ofa marketing knife for you know, your
your dovetails or your your motors andtann and joints, specifically the shoulder sections,
(11:58):
you really need to pick yourself up. So sort of mark and knife.
I would recommend one of these,as I said, nice compact,
getting in the type corners. Theblades are replaceable. I believe Paul sellers
sharp and said, I just putin your blade and you know each to
the highly recommend the door. Nextup chisels. Obviously, this is a
(12:24):
lot of people are probably watching thisor listening to this and thinking, yeah,
well that's that's a given. Butit is a given. But a
good set of chisels, and morespecifically the sizes, or at least for
me anyway, So I would definitelyrecommend the minimum of five chisels somewhere around
(12:46):
here, four or five. Idefinitely recommend quote orange half inch, free
quote inch and one inch. Ihave got this eight millimeter one. So
what's that that's close to? Like? Is that like free free afs?
(13:07):
That's close to I think somebody putit in the comments and put it right
of them on but I think that'sabout free eights freefs. Sorry, so
I don't tend to use this onea great deal, but definitely these these
four, So that would obviously bethe the one inch, free quote orange,
(13:28):
half inch and the one quote orange. Ironically, I am thinking about
getting some new chisels. I thinkI'm going to push the boat out and
most likely get some Japanese chisels.Yeah, they are all quite expensive,
or at least some of them canbey expensive. I mean for a set
(13:50):
of maybe five, you're looking atlike tone the pound plus depending on where
you go. So I am lookingto get some Japanese chisels. I haven't
actually used the Japanese chisel yet,but as I said, many years will
be listening or watching them thinking, yeah, it's a given, but it
is a given. So for anyof the you would work as watching the
(14:13):
channel, it is a given youdefinitely need some decent chisels. So very
briefly, why do you need aset of chisels. You need a set
of chisels for pairing, pairing downten and cheeks if you're going to cut
them that way, cutting out housingjoints to remove the thick of the material,
any sort of curves, you canget away with quite a lot.
(14:35):
Obviously, just behind this yat isthis shake our shelf, and it does
have the curves. I did actuallyuse this specific chisel. This is a
one inch chisel. I did useit on one of the curves. I
was actually messing around with a techniquejust to say which was going to be
the easier technique. I ended upactually cutting it with me i oba.
(14:56):
So I did struggle a little bitbecause of the the curve of chart.
It's it's only very small, soobviously there's limitations to what size of a
circle and what sides of the curveyou can cut with a ioba. So
but I didn't actually manage it witha ioba. So the chisels. When
(15:16):
you are using a chisel, itcan be done. I think there's demonstrations
of me doing this in multiple videoson the Instagram. Again, if you
want to check out the Instagram, will be links and the description. I
will also use the chisel too,you know, maybe not off the corner,
just realm over the corner. Sotypically I'll use a mallets me chisel,
(15:39):
take the corner off, and thenfinish up with a shint or rasp.
That's what I would normally do.Obviously, if you haven't got a
shint rasp, you know, youwould just use a file or maybe a
piece of sand. Pa. I'vebiged this little feller up a lot of
times. I really really like it. So this is the kushang. I
(16:02):
think I'm saying that right, ora luban luban. It is a number
forty three. I think this islike pretty much the same as an old
red word forty three. I thinkthis is worth its weight in gold.
It really is. It's very wellmade. I'm not too sure how much
(16:22):
these costs now. I think Imay have appeared about fifty pounds for a
good few years going on sale ata workshop heaven, but I'm not too
sure how much they are now.Strangely, I know some of the guys
from America they've got trouble getting these. You can't import these, or at
(16:45):
least you couldn't import these for somereason. I don't know the I don't
know the full in and out ofthe reason, And I just I thought
it was a bit strange from whatI gollad people who are trying to get
like Lee's sent over and they couldn'tget them sent over. But at the
same time, there was kind ofa shortage of these style of planes,
(17:07):
which didn't make any sense to me. But then again, I don't know
the full ins and out of thesituation. So this it's going to allow
you to create rebates and it's goingto allow you to create grooves. So
for all intense purposes, you couldbe creating tongue groove panel. And if
(17:30):
you wanted to do that, youknow, maybe for the back of maybe
you were making something similar to thisand you were putting some batman on it.
You wanted to put some i don'tknow, some some pine battering on
it, some tongue groove the boards. This would be the philat to me,
those tongue roof their boards. Onceyou've got to set up and you
know how to use it, youcan use one of these really quickly.
(17:53):
So again for for what you cando with this, you can basically build
doors with us, so you've gotthe ability to put grooves in so you
can you know, for instance, those style shaped out doors kitchen doors.
I think they're quite fashionable at themoment. I think every man and the
(18:15):
dogs or every woman that is,is wanting shake our doors in our kitchen,
and you are quite attractive. AndI've built a few sets of shape
our doors. They are really nice. But again, if you don't it
with hand tools, this is thefella or something very similar to this,
it's going to get you those groovesin the doors. So it is really
(18:36):
small just to kind of, youknow, put it in my hand there.
It's very very small, but itdoes pack a punch and I personally
think it's worth like every penny. So if you kind of get something like
this, you know, I woulddefinitely recommend getting some sort of a plow
play and that's going to allow youto create grooves and rebates. Next up
(19:00):
is the route a playing. I'vehad this route a plane for a very
very long time. It's absolutely awesome. So what you're gonna be able to
do with this is you're going't beable to get consistent flat tenants and housing
(19:21):
joints things like that. You canactually use this to put grooves in or
to clean up rebate, yeah, rebates, anything like that. So if
you're I don't know, if you'recutting a rebate and it's it's a little
bit skew. If or you're cuttinga tenant, You've you've chosen to use
(19:41):
the saw and you've cut the cheekof the tenant and it's a bit skew.
With this is the guy that's gonnasort it out for you, and
it's going to get it perfectly ninetydegrees for you, perfectly parallel to the
mainten service. I think these arestarting to get pretty expense though. I
do believe Paul Sellas has a kityou can buy. I've never used the
(20:06):
kits, so I couldn't really commenton it. I have heard some good
reports about it, so basically,it's a kit you go and buy and
you know, you just you makeit yourself sort of thing. Maybe not
the sort of thing for a beginner, maybe not, maybe like intermediate to
advanced woodworker, or at least abeginner that's being down there for you know,
(20:27):
sometime I may be able to dosomething like that. When I bought
this, it was about seventy poundsquite a few years ago, and now
that was on AB I believe. So I've never checked to say what sort
of prices you are now, soI wouldn't have a clue. I know
veritors do some route planes, butagain I haven't haven't used like a route
(20:53):
a veritor's route play, and that'sthis sort of size I do actually fancy
getting myself. I think it's apreston. I think the name of it.
I don't fancy trying one of those. Those are more the square bodied
things that seem to be a bitlonger. I don't fancy trying one of
those, so I am actually justkeep my eyes open for one. I'm
(21:15):
not I'm not looking for one perse. But if I was to be
on a flea market or a carbootsill and I've seen one in front of
us, obviously I would buy itif it wasn't working order. But as
I said, there were a greatbit of kid highly highly recommend these.
Next up, it's going to beagain this might be a given to people,
(21:37):
but some sort of a mallet ora hammer or something like that.
The problem with a hammer. Thisis a very old school hammer, as
you can see, the problem witha hammer is that it is going to
damage the top of your chisels whenyou you know your brain away, especially
(22:00):
this one. This one's got agood bit of way to it. I'm
not too sure of how much itweighs, but there is a good bit
of way to this. It canand will do some damage. So a
really good one I would recommend isthis is like a fourhammer. I can't
really see the This is the thirtytwo millimeter head ones. So these heads
(22:27):
just actually screw on and off likeso this isn't really this isn't really bad
share. It's been like this formaybe a year. You know. I
did order some you your heads forit, but I would have the wrong
size twice. I don't know howit managed managed to do that, but
(22:49):
I did. And somebody actually centersa couple of them and those are the
wrong size. Ironically, but thisis actually quite good. It's a nice
way to it. I don't liketo use it. When I'm using the
chisel, I find I find thatwhen I'm actually using this, this this
specific mallet, I get great control. It's for me. It's just a
(23:12):
nice way. I don't like theweight of this. Again with us wanting
to buy the Japanese chisels, Iwas actually going to purchase a Japanese hammer.
I think I was only looking atit last night, and I think
it was like three hundred grams somethingI had, and what it was stating
(23:37):
on the description is that the threehundred grams was good for using with the
chisels. So again I might Imight splash out and get myself a Japanese
hammer. Maybe I will, MaybeI won't. Feeling than that, if
you don't really want to go outand be spending money on know this,
(24:00):
this sort of kit, which isreally really good. By the way,
it could make something like this.I did do a video on this.
The only thing with these is whatI will say, you do have to
get a decent wood that's that's goingto stand up to it. So this
is beach ironically, and admittedly Iwill say the head should have been a
(24:23):
little bit figure in all dimensions.I just feel I've been using it on
and off for the last maybe weeknow, and I just feel it's it's
slightly underweighted. It needs a bitmore weight. So maybe in the coming
months I may actually redo this andmake a make a bigger head for it,
(24:45):
or maybe get a heavier wood.I kind of have to see what
happens, but you're definitely going toneed something like that. So guys,
what are your ten essential tools? What would you put in a bag to
go to a friend's house to doa little bit of work. You know,
limited space, you know you couldn'tyou couldn't grab, you couldn't take
(25:06):
all of your tools. What wouldbe the ten And I'm not talking about
power tools either, hand tools, hand tools that is known that comments what
you think and until the next time, I should see and speak you guys later.
