Speaker 1 (00:00):
In this podcast, I'm going to be talking about this
little guy, which is the little brother of the slot
bench I've just made.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
So if he's if he's have been following along.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
You're probably saying yourself, is Jesus this guy still banging
on about this this stupid bench. Well, it's not so
much about the bench per se, although I am loving
the bench, It's more about the about the concept or
the other way it goes to geta in the structure itself.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
It's so so so strong.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
I can't get over how like just how versatile of
designers and the structure itself. So I have actually made this,
and it wasn't it wasn't fully geared towards woodworking, although
I probably am going to use it forwood work. And
(01:08):
but I am going to be taking us away with
us to Europe, and I am scheduled to go to
Europe in early October, so I'm basically going to take
the van and just just going to be, you know,
camping in the van basically. But I thought to myself,
(01:29):
I need to be taking something with us where I
can basically sit on it. So the first idea was
to actually just go out and buy a deck chair.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
But this is me and had to just go out.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
And you know, I like to make things difficult, not
necessarily difficult, but I like to do things with my
own hand. So I thought to myself, well, why don't
I make a little work bench based off this design?
And the little work bench can be you know, it
(02:07):
can be used for multiple things. So I don't know,
maybe at the end of the day when I wherever
I should be in Europe, maybe Portugal, somewhere like that,
I can have this, you know, close to the van,
and I can be just leaning against the van, you know,
and it's a nice It's gonna be somewhere nice for
us to sit outside. Not only that, it's probably going
(02:33):
to be used for cooking on although I have got
facilities there in the varn. I have got a couple
of places where I can actually cook. I can cook
at the back of the van. I've got like a
little set up going on there. I can cook inside
of the van, which obviously I'm going to try to
avoid as much as possible because it just stinks the
(02:53):
van out. So this if the well as good and
there's you know, there's not a lot of in I
can I can literally just you know, put my induction
cooker on. Yeah, so on and whatever else I'm done,
and just basically cool on. Yeah, you know, after I'm
after I've finished cooking and clean it off and just
(03:14):
sit back and you know, it's going to be a
seat again. Probably gonna be using it to you know,
get some height for things, you know, if I need
to get on like to say, on top of the
vancy of the I don't know, maybe if the solar
panel needs cleaned anything like that, anywhere where I need
to get some heights.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
This is going to be you.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
Know, it's it's super strong, you know, just to show
you guys that I'm watching on YouTube, so you know
it is. It is super strong. It's you know, it
ain't gonna go anywhere. This is made from twelve millimeters apply.
And I did kind of I did kind of question it.
(03:58):
Not the fact of the twelve millimeter applied, but it's
the fact that it's made out of the Chinese plywood.
And unlike this guy, me, we work bench that I've
just made me told work bench that is, this is
made from twenty two millimeters apply and it's absolutely solid,
(04:21):
you know, and it is Chinese ply but say them again.
I ain't got no worries about this one. But with
this only been twelve millimeter apply in past experience with
Chinese ply I know Chinese plies.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
A lot weaker.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
It's like a lot lot weaker than Birch plywood. So
in reality, I would actually like to go out and
build this out with Birch plywood. And someone actually commented
on a I think it was a YouTube short just
today and I did actually say, you know, I'm going
to take this away with us using it, abuse it
(04:59):
because it will get using abuse. That's what it's, you know,
that's what's gonna be there for, you know, for anything
and everything I say fit and if it holds up, well,
if I'm happy with it, most likely when I come back,
I'm most likely just gonna go out and pay the
money for some Birch ply and actually build another one
(05:20):
with Birch ply And maybe by that time I may
have some you know, some things I may want to change,
you know, when I've been you know, using it whatever,
I'm going to be done with it, because this is me,
I doll. Actually I do actually plan on down a
little bit of woodwork when I'm aware not extensively. But
(05:45):
I am I am actually gonna build myself like a
very small Japanese toolbox, and I'm gonna be you know,
just something nice and small where I can get i
don't know, maybe ten twelve tools in it, and I'm
going to take that away with us. I'm going to
be away for five weeks. So during the five weeks,
(06:07):
I'm pretty sure that there's going to be a handful
of days where I might just I might have nothing
to do, there might be some reason I might just
want to chill out a little bit.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
And obviously, knowing.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Me, when I am chilling out a little bit, I'm
going to end up getting bored. So, you know, depending
if I am just recharging me back type of thing
and I am getting bored, there's always this sort of guy,
you know, the same this This thing goes to go
on about a minute, literally in a minute. It's nice
(06:44):
and light, which is good, but it may be a
little bit problematic when I'm working on it, so I'll
have to kind of, you know, navigate around that. So
the construction of it is it's pretty much exactly the same.
There is obviously a few visual differences, so I think
(07:04):
one of the most visual differences is that the top
and the bottom on the same size on the smaller bench.
On the larger bench, the base is slightly smaller, and
I've got more of an overhang I think on the top,
I think it's an overhang of two hundred millimeats on
(07:26):
the tall bench where the smaller bench isn't, I forget
what that is.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
Now that is what we've got.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
We've got sixty sixty two millimeters. I don't know why
that's sixty two. There's the other side sixty two. I
don't know why that's sixty two. Seems a bit odd.
Sixty Yeah, it's the same. So however, however, I've worded
out a sixty two millimeter as overhang. So the reason
why it's not two hundred for those of your that's
(08:00):
you know, kind of wondering why, is because this is
only twelve millimeters in thickness, and it's actually not twelve millimeter,
as it's slightly younger twelve millimeters, And obviously the big
bench is twenty two millimeters.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
So obviously the thick other material.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
The more you're going to be able to extend it
to have more of an overhang, and you're not going
to have any comebacks where this I am, or I
was a little bit wary about extending it too much.
Speaker 3 (08:34):
Not just that.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
Obviously I didn't want to make it any bigger than
what it was because this has actually got to go
into the van. So that was another thing I had
to take into consideration, was basically, you know, I can't
make this too big, but at the same time, I
don't want to be making it too small because I've
got to get into the van and I don't want
it infire with anything. I'm not overly sure where I'm
(08:59):
going to put in the van yet. Obviously it is
gonna you know, come apart, you know, and it's gonna
be stacked like flat packed. And that's one of the
great things about you know, the big bench and the
little bench.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
It can be put together and it can be flap packed.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
Obviously, the the apron on the on the tall bench
obviously that can't be flap packed. It's just one component.
But you know, the rest of the bench on the
tall bench that can be flap packed and stored, which
is really cool. Same sort of thing with this, so
I have I have only got one cut out on
(09:37):
the on the little bench, and basically yesterday I was
kind of messing around with it, like like an idiot.
I was basically, you know, kneeling on it, and you know,
I had I had my head hung over it, and
I'm you know, I'm bouncing on it with me and
I'm kind of and I'm saying, I'm saying, if there's
(09:59):
any sort of like you know, in this area where
the cutout is, and it was solid, you know, nothing
seemed to be moving. So I'm wondering if I should
maybe you know, have another cutout on the other side.
And one of the reasons I was thinking to have
(10:20):
a cut out before I actually take it away with
us is that I foarding myself.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
When I am away in the van.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
I might have to get this into the van quickly
for whatever reason. Maybe I've I've got to leave that
area super super quick for whatever reason, or maybe it
just starts raining. So it is it is actually, you know,
I can't actually pick it up. It's not too much
(10:49):
of a deal to actually pick it up. Although you
shouldn't really be picking it up like that because it
relies on you know, the downward force, a gravity force.
But I'm thinking if I put another another cut out.
It is actually going to give us two handles. I mean,
I can still.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
Pick it up like this.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
It's it's a massive deal, I suppose.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
But I also thought, with us having another cut out there,
it's going to give us access from both sides. Maybe
that's going to be a good thing when I'm when
i've you know, when I'm out and about and like,
I don't know, maybe a comside, I might want to
have access to both sides.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
You know.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
I'm just trying to afore see everything and you know,
trying to make the best out of the sort of thing.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
So woodwork and.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
Wise, I was messing about with it the other day
just a little bit, just a little bit.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
And I basically had a.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
Strip of or an off cuts of plywood on the
top climbing in the place, and I was playing against it.
Obviously I was sitting on the bench itself when I
was playing. But it was fine. It was totally fine.
So I was really happy about that.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
Now.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
I didn't actually put any holes in it, any dog holes,
that is, so I did. I did contemplate on putting
some dog holes in it, but I haven't as of yet,
and I'm not overly sure I have, I'm going to.
(12:32):
So one of the first things that are kind of
like basically presented itself TOS is that there's actually not
a lot of area between the edge of the bench
and we're the first slots.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Obviously I haven't thought this through very well, but.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
At the same time, I didn't want to be extending
this too much either way. So again, because it's a
Chinese ply, I'm not overly sure if it if it
would be strong enough, if it's if it's such a
good idea to be putting all these holes in, maybe
(13:16):
it would be. Maybe I'm just being a bit too cautious,
So maybe I will, maybe I won't. I'm again I'm
not overly sure about that. However, I did think to
myself that there's plenty of places to you know, grab stuff,
and if I'm smart about it, the tools I do
(13:39):
take away and maybe the little bit of wood I
take away. If I've got the room, I'm basically going
to have to say, our logistics is.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
Inside the varn.
Speaker 1 (13:49):
But if I plan ahead, you know, and have and
have an idea of maybe you know a small handful
of projects that I could do. Obviously I can't say
of workholder is going to be visible on this and
if not, you know, I can address it before I
go and kind of way things up. So that's kind
(14:11):
of the thinking behind it. So as you can say,
the bottom the construction is very it's very similar to
the tall bench. And what I haven't done with this bench,
I haven't actually put any supports under the bottom shelf.
(14:34):
So obviously, if you're going to be putting weights on
the bottom shelf when it's in its upright position, which
I probably will be, but it's not going to be
a great deal of weights where obviously there is actually
a great not a great deal with but there is,
there is considerable weights on the bottom shelf. So because
(14:56):
of that, with the big bench, I didn't need to
support that bottom up.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
I was a bit worried about that.
Speaker 1 (15:03):
So with this one, I'm not ovalue worried about it.
I'm just gonna let it play out. I think possibly
in time gravity might take its effect and we may
get some sort of a sack in it, maybe, but
as of now, I don't think I'm going to do that.
If I'm going to do anything, it is going to
(15:26):
be the cut out on the other side of the
sidewall and possibly a few dog holes possibly.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
I did, however, add the extra sections for the feet.
Speaker 3 (15:39):
And this was and this was for twofold.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
This was basically I wasn't happy with the fact that
it was only twelve millimeters in fitness as as a
foot itself, I.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Wasn't happy with that.
Speaker 1 (15:54):
So I did want to extend the width of it,
or the thickness of it, just to give it a
bit more or meat if you will, you know, while
it's sitting on the floor wherever it's going to be sitting.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
So I wasn't overly happy with that.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
I think one of the things thinking about it now,
one of the things is that if this goes on
to maybe some grass or soil, with it being so thin,
it would have dug itself into.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
The grass or the soil, you know, really easily.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
So obviously the more the more you make something thig
that's going on the grass, the less like it's going
to you know, there's going to be more resistance and
it's not going to go into the soil as easy. Again,
I did down with a little cutouts. Again, these are
very important, especially if the ground's uneven. Obviously, if the
(16:47):
ground is only even it's making contact with.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
The middle.
Speaker 1 (16:51):
Of the feet and there isn't a cutout. It's going
to rock, so obviously it is important. A couple of
things that I should point out if you're planning on
making one of these. Maybe you're planning on making this
this big bench, which by the way, there is free
plans kicking about.
Speaker 3 (17:11):
There is links.
Speaker 1 (17:13):
There is a link in the actual build video for
this if you want to make it.
Speaker 3 (17:19):
But one of the things you.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
Should take in a consideration, which you can say that
I haven't, And to be honest, I wasn't too bored
about this one because.
Speaker 3 (17:28):
It's just going to be using abuse.
Speaker 1 (17:30):
But you can basically see the tear out where the
saws actually come through and.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
There's just been tear out.
Speaker 1 (17:39):
Now, I couldn't minimize this by using some sort of
a tape on this or using a scrap piece of
wood anything like that, but I wasn't too bored about it.
But if you're going to be doing something like this,
it's probably something to take into consideration because.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
You will you will get it. You know, you know
your tear out.
Speaker 1 (18:01):
So it does look a little bit unsightly, but fortunately
for me, the way I've built it.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
I did kind of anticipate this, so.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
Obviously there is there is numerous tearouts like this, but
they're on the under side. So for for taking this
apart and stacking it, obviously it is really easy. And
(18:35):
it's not going to take up a lot of room
in the van, which was one of the main factors.
And I was a little bit concerned about this. I
think it's not so much the thickness of the bench.
It's more it's more the length of it. H. So
(19:02):
when everything's kind of stacked, let's get these on top. H.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
So when everything stacks, as you can say, it's it's not.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
Taking up a lot of room at all. Is it's
I mean the total thickness of this.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
Let's see what it is.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Yeah, we've got.
Speaker 3 (19:33):
What's up.
Speaker 1 (19:34):
That's just done that seventy millimeters let's see what that
is and inches. I'm not gonna I'm not I'm even
gonna try and work that out.
Speaker 3 (19:46):
But we've gotten inches. Yeah, let's see. Let's see.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
So it's like two and three quarter two and three
quote as of an inch. So that's pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (19:59):
And for what it is and for how strong it is,
I am happy with how it's.
Speaker 3 (20:04):
Going to store.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
The only issue is is these two little bits the
top and the bottom, because you're longer. So I think
I think the two the two leg pieces there, obviously
they're not going to be an issue. The two sidewalls, again,
they're not going to be too much of an issue.
Speaker 3 (20:26):
I think I've kind of got a home for for.
Speaker 1 (20:29):
Maybe these these two sections, and you know, the two sidewalls.
I'm not overly sure where I'm going to put the
top on the bottom, but I'm obviously sure i'll find
a player somewhere in the van. So guys, I know
it's been a little bit boring, probably, but I did
think it was a good idea just to show, just
(20:49):
to show the concept that it is doable to have
something a lot smaller for those of you that are
really really stuck on space and maybe you do you
have to take it apart and you haven't got the
room to store something like this, although the big bench
is quite storable in my own opinion, but this is
(21:09):
absolutely great in One of the bonuses with this is
that it is pretty late, and you know, you can
transport it by yourself and literally want on. So that's
the good thing about it. As I said, I just
thought i'd share it. It might be helpful to some people.
(21:31):
Let us know what you think about it in the comments,
and until the next time, I shall say and speak
to you guys later
