Speaker 1 (00:00):
And now effective communication with Phil Zeller, CEO Dale Carnegie, Southwest, Michigan.
You ever have those things that just pop up during
the day and they bring back a flood of memories
into your mind, you know the ones. It's the little
things for me through there was the other day, just
minding mile business. All of a sudden, I see Winnie

(00:21):
the Pooh, Winnie the Pooh. You remember Winnie the Pooh.
You know, he was the bear. He was this little
simple bear, but he always was optimistic. And that's why
I think, that's why I brought the back the memories,
Because Winnie the Pooh, although he wasn't sharp, he wasn't
fast man, that bear was optimistic though. That bear was

(00:42):
always always happy, and always on a mission, and always
looking to do something that brought happiness for himself and others,
and always looking to help his friends out there in
the woods. And I thought to myself, you know what,
as I thinking about those memories, I remember whenning the Pooh,
and that's the good memory. But then I started thinking

(01:03):
processing winning the Pooh, and there was this other careacchter
on winning the Pooh? E or and e or was
this is this very unhappy I wanted to believe he
was a donkey. Maybe you recall what he was, but
he was never happy, and he was always a bit
sarcastic in his responses to Winne the Pooh, and he
he would kind of try to squash Winnie the Pooh's

(01:23):
enthusiasm and zest for life. And the beautiful thing about
it is that Winnie the Pooh was resilient. And I
think one of the things that attracted me to Winny
Pooh Winnie the Pooh as a child, what I watched
in those memories was Winnie the Pooh was resilient. Winnie
Poo did not back down, He did not change who
he was. He stayed humble, and he was out there

(01:44):
to help people make good things. And even though one
of his friends was very negative and even negative toward
his enthusiasm, it didn't stop him. Now, I share this
story with you today because oftentimes that's that's a cartoon,
and then that's awesome that when the Pooh could never
be distracted or taken away from his enthusiasm. And one

(02:04):
of the challenges I want to share with you today
on effective communication is that oftentimes I see people who
are friends or family members or leaders or in management positions,
they will squash another person's enthusiasm, and then all of
a sudden, that person whose enthusiasm was squashed because somebody
wants to be an e or to a Winning of

(02:26):
the Pooh type person a squash or enthusiasm. If that
person doesn't have the resilience of winning the poop, they're
going to shut down. They're not going to share the
good things anymore, and they're not going to share what
they're enthusiastic about anymore. And actually you're going to lose
that person really given one hundred and ten percent because

(02:46):
they don't feel appreciated for their enthusiasm. So a mentor
of mine taught me years ago. He said, phil, whatever
you do, don't step on another person's enthusiasm, just don't
do it because if you do it and it happens
one time, they won't forget and they're less apt to
open up and share with you later. And we need people.

(03:08):
We want open communication. We need open communication. We need
to expand the bandwidth. Y'all want more bandwidth. So let's
make sure that we don't ever squash a person's enthusiasm. Now,
some of you saying, well, wait a minute. Sometimes their
enthusiasm is misdirected. It's going in the wrong direction. Okay,
I hear you. I hear it. And if you really

(03:29):
want to help that person and lead them, don't make
a direct statement about it. Don't make a statement about it.
If you want to help them and redirect that enthusiasm,
ask them a question like, how so, then what happens?
What will it lead to? All simple questions that they
can continue down their train of thought with their enthusiasm

(03:52):
and share with you where it goes. And as you
take an interest in it, they'll get excited. They'll stay
excited and want to participate more, and they'll want to
do more because of you just being there to listen
and engage and ask questions. And again, if you want
to get frustrated because that enthusiasm, for whatever reason, you

(04:16):
don't see it going the right way, don't shut it down.
Don't shut it down because tomorrow, when that person doesn't
want to apply themselves, you're gonna get frustrated then too,
And tell me what's gonna impact you more? So take
a breath and just ask them, I hear you, how so,
what happens next? When we do that? Then? What and

(04:36):
what will that lead to and get them to own
their enthusiasm in a productive way to produce results. And
if you do this as a leader, people are gonna
love working with you and you're gonna have those charged
energy type a people that get things done around you
because they're gonna they know they're valued, they're appreciated, and
they can put their enthusiasm to work for you because

(04:58):
as Dale Carnegie said, he said, enthusiasm is more than
just a zest for work. It is the whole of
life and living. If you have it, you have a
priceless possession. Cherish it. So my challenge to you, lader,
make sure that you bring out the enthusiasm and everyone,
and most importantly in yourself to earn the life that

(05:20):
you deserve. That go make it happen
