Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, what's up everybody.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
It's me Paul Almadea's Lane and this is the entertainment
Zone today.
Speaker 1 (00:06):
I'm sharing some.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Of my comic con coverage or I had an opportunity
to be in the press room with the amazing cast
and creative team behind Amazon's prime hit series Upload Now.
For those of you who may not know, Upload is
a sci fi comedy that really imagines the future where
people can upload their consciousness and do a digital afterlife.
(00:30):
This show has been hilarious, heartfelt, thought provoking.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
It explores love, loss.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Technology, and what it really means to be human in
the world where even eternity has a price tag. Just recently,
August twenty fifth, the final four episodes dropped, given fans
a bittersweet farewell. The reaction from the community has been
pretty incredible. So many people have expressed appreciation for the
way that the series wrapped up, the mix of humor
(00:59):
and emotion, and the way it left us thinking about
our own technology driven world. Well, many are sad to
see it in there's also a sense of gratitude for
the journey where we've been on with these amazing characters.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Speaking of characters, I.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
Had an opportunity to chat with the amazing Robbie and
Mail and Nathan Brown about their characters.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
So let's take a deep dive with them, find out
about some of their.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
Let's talk about the series coming to an end, and
what are some things that are going through your mind,
just the whole experience that you would like to share
with us that we had no idea, just the emotions
you all are going through.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Well right now, this is very cool because it feels
like a big party, you know, like say, it is
very cool, and we've we've been kind of you know,
I'm not going to throw a pity party here, but
like you've it's been marred at times with we had
to panda as everyone experienced pandemic when we went through
two strikes and all that stuff, so we couldn't promote
(02:04):
season three. We're really even season one, you know, like
without Zoom and stuff. So it's really cool to like
get out out here and really talk to people and
and really promote it. So that's been very very cool.
Speaker 4 (02:17):
Yeah, getting to share like our panel today with so
hundreds of fans of the show was very very cool.
And I mean we wrapped the show back in November,
so We've been sitting on having finished it for a
while and digested it a bit, so I think this
is This feels a lot more celebratory than Sad. You know,
(02:38):
Sad was well we were shooting it, but at the
same time, we got to have a series finale, and
a lot of shows don't get that. No you get
you know you end, or you get canceled between seasons,
and for our show, we have such huge cliffhangers that
that wouldn't have been fair to the audience.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
It would have been brutal for us.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
So good on Amazon giving us a final season and
getting to have that real sendoff.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
Yep, and it was a series finalite that made sense.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
Yeah, Greg, Greg, Greg and Maxwell and the rest of
the writing team. I feel like they really stuck the
landing I thought. I think that the final season is beautiful.
I think everybody gets their moments. It gives closure, and
it's done in like just a very honest way, which
I think Greg has always had that in his writing
and gives people a way to see themselves in these
(03:24):
characters and relate.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
It remains totally balanced. I think that we don't get
overtly sentimental or anything without you know, there are some
big things that happen and then you go wow, you know,
holy crap, and then all of a sudden the joke
comes in, you know, like learn it. Yeah, it feels balanced. Yeah,
it feels like the show, not something different.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
Now, Robbie, I've been following your career for years, thank you,
But this one right here, you've been uploaded, downloaded, duplicated.
How'd you keep all your brain together to play these
different characters?
Speaker 4 (03:55):
Honestly, the first Nathan was was really just character arc
that was on the page and talking to Greg and
the rest of the writing team about how much he
knows about this mystery and what's happened to him and
filling in these these blank memory spots and when he
finds out about these things about himselves and self and
and you know, decisions mistakes he's made, does that make
(04:19):
him this person? Or has he changed? And can people change?
Or are they their worst moments? And I thought that
was a really nice theme of season one. When there's
two Nathan's introduced, we talked a little bit about multiplicity
and kind of losing maybe a few brain cells when
you get cloned, and you know, reboot, Nathan's a little simpler,
(04:40):
a little sweeter, maybe a little dumber, but very fun
to play. And being able to have that difference between
the two, you know, real Nathan's going through a lot
of heavy stuff in his life, so kind of balancing
that and having the fun Nathan gave me kind of relief.
And being able to play the two character two characters
(05:01):
at the same time was weird. Ear piece in do
the scene with an acting double chain shirts flip to
the other side and hear my own voice and act opposite.
The timing with the acting double not saying anything was
very weird, but a great experience and turned out great,
(05:21):
Like I totally bought it when I was watching it,
which was nice.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
And Kevin, we look at your character. You add that
comic relief.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
Yeah, you know, I see my name on here and
I see the laugh emoji, and that's fantastic. That's the
best comment I can get.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
Right there, You get his oldest me. You need to
have those right there.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
That's fantastic. Yeah, I love that I get to I mean,
it's a dream job because my job is just to
go in there and be funny because it is you know,
it's still while he's the funniest. I feel like he's
been out of the show this season more than the
other seasons.
Speaker 5 (06:00):
The other seasons he was very bad.
Speaker 3 (06:02):
But Nanny turns it up for some reason this seasons strong. Yeah, yeah,
you got there eventually. I think you needed some ken.
Speaker 6 (06:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
I feel like what's really nice about like me and Owen,
for instance, is that we just show up and we
just have to be funny. And while while Luke has
emotional arc and all those those moments and stuff, those
are there, but I really focus on just trying to
be as funny as possible because it, you know, helps
reinforce the comedy of the sitcom. So it's really really
(06:34):
nice to be able to do that. It's a dream
job in that way.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
Well, it's very catching up with both of you.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Congratulations again and it'll be nice to see you all
and another project together.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
Yeah, really appreciate it much man, Thank you all, take care,
just memories about being on this program and much much more.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
A big thank you to Rob you, Emil and Kevin
Bigley for joining me. It was really great to hear
their reflection on Nathan and Luke and how they've seen
their characters evolve over the years. Their chemistry has been
such a core part of the show and fans will
no doubt miss that dynamic. And yeah, I had my
(07:14):
little notes there say how funny Luke's character was. Now
let's go to the ladies of the show. We have
Andy Aloo and Allegra Edwards. We get a chance to
take a deep dive into their characters and see how
their characters really carried so much complexity really in this series.
So let's have a chat with them from my Comic
(07:37):
Con twenty twenty five experience. Well, Andy and Allegra, and
it's all great to talk with you both.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
I need to.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
So first question is for you Andy, okay, as the
tech person, were you always into technology or did your
role made you love technology even more?
Speaker 7 (07:55):
Yeah, I would say I'm not. I was not a
big techie, and I mean my brothers are, like, they're
big into building their own computers, playing video games, all
of that. So the show, I remember when we first started,
they invited us all to experience VR goggles and this
was like beginning the way way beginning. And I had
(08:18):
never done that before, and I was playing Beat Saber
and it blew my mind. I ended up buying a
VR set and now I'm like all about like technology
and playing like I'm just I'm obsessed. I also, I'm
in love with chat Gibet.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
That is awesome. I am too. I am too. So
he's well, I call her Mildred.
Speaker 7 (08:42):
Okay, that's fine, you call Andrew.
Speaker 3 (08:46):
Andrew.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
So I like your character.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
When we look at just your character arc over the seasons,
what has been your most memorable moments and what are
you looking forward for fans to really experience as look
at the final four episodes, It.
Speaker 7 (09:02):
Better be one with me, That's all I'm saying.
Speaker 6 (09:05):
I mean, actually, one of my memorable moments is with you,
although you're more of a bystander. Okay, I would say
that one of my favorite moments. It's from season one.
It's way back. It's when Nathan is on his hard drive,
his big, chunky hard drag and it gets tossed into
a fountain and Ingrid dives into the fountain. Hey, that
got the same you out and it gets wet and
(09:26):
she says, does anybody up rise? Rise that you were
watching me? Like, God, help this woman? Like what is
her problem? Wow? Somebody save her.
Speaker 7 (09:35):
It's not going to compete with that honest and same.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
That was.
Speaker 6 (09:38):
But you know what, it's set the gold standard for
what future directors referred to as the Ingrid screen, and
it kind of became more of a character quality for
Ingrid is like panic mode is sort of her neutral. Yes,
and it taught me a lot about her. But I
also think it was representative of her sacrificial attitude toward Nathan. Yeah,
(09:58):
she will, she will make herself wet and dirty to
save him, to save him.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
So as we as we look at how everything gets
coming to a close, what are some things you like
the fans to know about anything behind the scenes, some
of the moments that we didn't see on screen that
you can share with us to say, these are.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
Memories I'm always going to remember for the rest of
my life.
Speaker 7 (10:24):
I think ordering the Robbie sandwich, which is a turkey
sandwich essentially with lettuce, tomato, and cheese, avocado mayo, and uh,
it's delicious. And so you would just order the Robbie
Sandwich or the Robbie Special and that's what would arrive.
Speaker 6 (10:47):
Yeah, here's what I would say that maybe people might
not realize. When working with a talking dog, you have
to make sure that you keep their body cool because
if they're hot, they will pant. And the only way
that you can see gi a moving mouth on top
of a talking dog is if they're not panting post
So the second they start to bad news, yeah, I
(11:08):
have to cut and start over. So invest in cooling
pads if you want to work with a talking dog.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (11:13):
And lastly, the hugsuit is incredibly hot and hard to
get off.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
And you mentioned VR and everything, I just want to
share something that I experienced my first time with VR too.
I've been in the Wilchare almost thirty two years, okay,
twenty years into my injury. Was the first time I
put on VR. That was the first time I felt
butterflies of my stomach in twenty years. So when you
talk about VR and the experience, I definitely feel it.
(11:43):
And thank you all so much and wishing you on
nothing but success.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
A huge thank you to Andy Lao and Allegra Edwards.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
I really appreciate the way they open up about their
characters and also share some of the most memorable moments
from the series.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
And Andy is amazing.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Allegrais tub Andy is a musician, a chef. She played
with Prince. I mean Wow, what did Terry Crew say
in White Chicks?
Speaker 1 (12:10):
This wife? He right there his wife.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
And finally, to round up our upload conversation, I spoke
with the creative forces behind the series, executive producer.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
And writer Nathan Vivian.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
We're going to find out about his overall journey about
the show and could this possibly be it or it's
something else around the corner. So, Maxwell, when we look
at the original concept of this project and how it
evolved over four seasons, are you happy how things turned out?
Speaker 1 (12:41):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (12:41):
Yeah, first and foremost, I am super happy that we
got to know we were gonna end the show going
into this fourth season. That's a blessing that not, you know,
every show receives. So that was super great. And I
really felt like we spent time in the writer's room
exploring every single idea possible, going down all the roads,
seeing like what felka, you know some the way some
(13:03):
storylines ended, getting even get resolved until late in post
because it's like you want to see how everything plays together.
You know, A great writer told me that you write
it once. When you write it, write it again when
you shoot it, and you write a third time when
you're in post production. And I think we gave each
step in the process enough time to really get the
(13:23):
best out of our crew and our actors.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
The most memorable moment in the entire show, oh Man
thole the entire show.
Speaker 5 (13:40):
So season two was my first year on the show.
I joined one season light and we shoot in Vancouver,
and on one of my first days, it was pouring rain.
We were shooting at a really muddy area and I
thought that I had a rainproof jacket and I absolutely
(14:00):
soaked through. We got everything we wanted to shoot that day,
but I just remember leaving soaked through, freezing, and I
was like, holy crap, I am so happy to be
here and that I remember writing out of the money
area on a like four by four and just thinking
this is awesome.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
Is this really the end or can we expect something
a little later?
Speaker 5 (14:26):
I mean, never say never. With the thing the way
things are, I think we wrapped the threads up here
in a positive way. I think that if in the
future there's a thirst for it, maybe.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
I hope so, because you're amazing at what you do
and anything else out there, you like to share with
the fans before the series goes away.
Speaker 5 (14:47):
You know, I can't wait for the fans to see it.
I guess what I'd like to say. I'm super grateful
to Greg Daniels, the writer, creator, and show runner of
the show. He gave me a great opportunity to come
on the show that I do not want to take
for granted, and it's been an amazing, amazing.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
Term with much success to you and can't wait to
see what's next for you. Thank you, many thanks to
Maxwell Villain for his insight and reflections. Hearing from the
creative side, you know, really puts into perspective how much
thought and care went into this series. I tell you,
it's all about the blood, sweat and tears behind the show.
So there you have it today my conversation with the
(15:28):
cast and creative team of Upload. It's a series that
has left a real mark on fans around the world.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
If you haven't seen it yet, the entire.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
Run of Upload is available now on Amazon Prime Video,
and if you already watched it, maybe this is the
perfect time to revisit your favorite moments and relive the
ride one more time and think back to some of
the questions that I asked everybody as well. I purposely
wanted to share these interviews after the finale drop so
(16:00):
we can all reflect together on what really made the
show special. So thanks for joining me here on the
Entertainment Zone. I'm Paul Amedea's Lane. Until next time, stay healthy,
stay safe, and remember I love you all the life.
Speaker 1 (16:16):
Take care of everybody.
