(01:02):
across all of our podcast platforms, are watching us on
our Vimeo scream at Kimmy t TV. Thank you so
much for being here. Today's a special one. We've got
an incredible cast from the highly anticipated second season of
Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Now I remember be'st premiering

(01:23):
on Disney Plus on December tenth, twenty twenty five. I
had an opportunity to chat with the cast at Comic
Con twenty twenty five. We held onto this coverage because
I wanted to make sure that we actually did it
right when the series was about to drop, so all
these things will be fresh in your mind. So we're

(01:46):
going to start off the discussion with the star himself,
Walker Scobel, who plays Percy Jackson. So when we look
at your character at the end of season one, we
really saw this maturation process of you growing into young adulthood.
Are we going to see that more in this season?

Speaker 4 (02:05):
One hundred percent?

Speaker 2 (02:06):
One hundred percent.

Speaker 4 (02:07):
I mean, as it goes on, it's it's we're in
very similar stages of.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
Our lives, you know.

Speaker 4 (02:11):
So it's it's it's, uh, it's really interesting to like
kind of play it.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
How I am, you know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
So I'm lucky for him. I'm lucky I get to
do that, you know. So talk about the interaction between
you and your younger big brother and how are we
gonna experience that.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
I mean, Daniel did an amazing job.

Speaker 4 (02:31):
I think reading the books, it's really hard to like
picture Tyson in live action, you know what I mean,
Like how do you do that?

Speaker 1 (02:37):
And uh yeah.

Speaker 4 (02:38):
I think Daniel just did a spectacular job. And and
you know, he's very's Tyson is is. I think it's
a very good adaptation of the book and also taking
some like of his own liberties and and he gives
it just an amazing performance. And he needs to be
very likable even before they put the eye on, you

(03:00):
know what I mean. For the idle work, I remember
that being a huge thing that the VFX guys were
talking about. Daniel really needed to how do you say
it more? He had to come off a certain way
for the idle work, and it really worked. He did
a really good job.

Speaker 5 (03:14):
I really enjoyed talking to Walker about his character Percy
and some of the gems that he dropped just what
we have to look forward to in season number two.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
He also really paid homage to the book and how
there's going to be a new character that's going to
raar his I we say in season two it's going
to be his brother who name is Tyson played by
Daniel Demir. And let's talk with Daniel right now about

(03:52):
the character Tyson and what it means that Percy has
a brother and what's that dynamic going to be like
in the second season. Yes, are you going to be
like a protector for Percy, kind of like a big
brother looking out for him.

Speaker 6 (04:07):
Yeah, I mean it's it's a weird mix because I'm
technically the younger brother, but it is also like like
there's a there is definitely that protection aspect. I think
it goes both ways. Honestly. I think there's a lot
of Tyson that that's similar in a lot of ways
to Grover in season one. I think there's that that
friendship that builds and that kind of like taking care
of each other. But yeah, that protective instinct of his
is definitely comes to the forefront a lot of the time.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Yeah, you know what, I'm a younger brother too, and
I'm taller than my older brother, So.

Speaker 6 (04:31):
I get that my little brother is like he he's
he's got me right at the tip. So I'm like,
I keep on trying to like keep keep calling my
little brother. But yeah, I mean it's at this point,
he's he's like almost sixty five as well, it's it's
a hard kind of title to give him.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
Yeah, and what are you more? What do you most
want the fans to get from your character arc and
this season too?

Speaker 6 (04:50):
I think, honestly, I think being able to see that
being open and honest and loving is a strength in
its own. I think a lot of people viewed as
a weakness and that we you have to put up
walls to kind of protect ourselves from people. And again,
it makes sense life's difficult, people are not always looking
out for us. But I think it is a superpower
in its own to be the light in the midst

(05:10):
of the darkness and to be able to show up
and be yourself and be who you really want to
be as much as you possibly can. I think other
people can look to that as an inspiration to be themselves,
even more so with as well.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
So one thing I like about your character, it's the
first character in mythology that has a disability.

Speaker 6 (05:25):
So that's crazy. Yeah, I didn't even think about that.
I mean it's like again, playing him, it's felt so special.
I think there's there's a lot of people that don't
characters in the in the project that don't treat him
too kindly along with that being being a big, huge
aspect of it. And so to be able to kind
of like write a character that has a disability like that,
but in it right right, it's where he has so

(05:47):
much of his own power. I think it's such a
beautiful thing.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
One thing that I really enjoyed talking to Daniel about
his character Tyson, was did y'all know that the character
has a disability with that one eye? So that is
dear to me as a person living with a disability,
to really have that story amplified out there, And you know,

(06:12):
I thought it was pretty cool. Did you? Maybe maybe not,
but I thought it was. But looking forward to the
dynamic between Percy and Tyson, and yeah, just can't wait
for that. All right, now, we're gonna be joined by
Leah Sava Jeffries. Now. Leah got her started back in

(06:36):
the hit show Empire. Some of y'all probably remember her,
but she was really really, really really really little, and
now she is Annabeth Chase on Percy Jackson. And one thing,
if you watch the first season, she was kind of
like the protector, you know, no nonsense kind of person.

(06:59):
But Tory the end of the season one she began
to kind of open up a little bit, kind of
loosen up. I pose that question to her and also
what we have to look forward to in season two.
She also has a religious centure and it kind of

(07:21):
gave her a conflict to really playing this character. You'll
see what I mean. Check it out. You knowin came
a long way from empire and now to you know
what that means. You know, we know what that means, right,
so so so talk about me in Greek mythology and
playing such an integral character in the series.

Speaker 7 (07:45):
Okay, so playing a person that death like if I'm
coming from annabs side, you know, like it's really it's
really fun. It's really amazing, especially for someone like who
if I'm coming from ambside, like someone who has studied
into that and things like it's really nice like play

(08:05):
this and stuff and like no and like you're like
oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah, like I got this, like
I know this part, I know this part and stuff
like I'm doing this right now or like this is
that and it's actually like it's really enjoying and stuff
like when you're studying it and like you're seeing all
different things that you're gonna do in the show, and
then coming from my perspective, it's it's a it's a
it's not a new thing because I have, like I've

(08:27):
studied and read the books. But if I'm coming from
like like Leah save Jeffries before all that stuff, it's
a new thing because you know, like I like I
am a believer of God, like of Christ, so like
you know, like trying to learn like Greek mythology. It's
just like it's so different cause it's like two and two,
you know what I mean. It's like instead of saying

(08:48):
thank you, like like thank God, like they're seeing like
thank God's uh plural. So it's it's kind of funny
because like how it is and things. But honestly, it's
it's just really cool. Honestly. It's learn like certain things
about it and just like make like little like connections
here and there and stuff, you know.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
What I mean.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
Well, great talking with you. I can't Hopefully you see
your daddy this season. Hopefully we see your father this season.
I know, I know, I really enjoy chatting with Leah,
have her open up about playing that character and really
what to look forward to in season two and if
we ever gonna see her father, if her father's gonna

(09:27):
make a gonna make it appearance, so we have to
wait and see. Let's move to another powerful woman, and
that's your good John. If she plays Clarice LaRue and
if you notice kind of like the dynamic between she
and Percy, I don't know, they kind of got to

(09:49):
like a little. You know, you were growing up in
elementary school. You know, when you like somebody, you would
treat them bad. You know, That's how we did in school.
We were young and dull. But what's up with their dynamic?
Let's have your answer that question for us. But when
you look at your character, yes, do you kind of

(10:13):
have a crush on Percy and that's why your character
so hard on him? What's the deal between you? Are
we going to find out season two why you don't
like him that much?

Speaker 8 (10:21):
Guys, we'll definitely find out season two why Clarice doesn't
like Rossie.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
I mean, come up with whatever answer you want.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
I would love to.

Speaker 8 (10:30):
Actually, I want to hear the fan theories.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
I want to know what they think.

Speaker 8 (10:34):
I wonder what they think is why, because you will
find out in the season two when it comes out.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
One thing I like about your character is that the
last episode, the look in your face that final episode,
so that there's some conflict going on. Are we going
to find out about that? Absolutely?

Speaker 8 (10:52):
I think the big thing about this season for Clarice
is that you get to understand her reasons why. This season,
you get to actually peelback that like stoic kind of
aggressive lair and understand her inner workings and her deepest,
darkest traumas and thoughts and what she's been through and
has decided to get her to this point.

Speaker 6 (11:13):
So yeah, you'll.

Speaker 8 (11:14):
Discover a lot about her this season. And I'm so
so excited because, you know what, we all love to
hate her.

Speaker 1 (11:19):
I love to hate her too.

Speaker 8 (11:21):
She's great, She's everybody's favorite bully. But I think at
the end of this season, I think all the fans
will have a reason to love her in some kind
of sick, twisted way.

Speaker 9 (11:30):
For sure.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
Are we going to see her in a singing scene?

Speaker 8 (11:35):
Listen, if we want to put me in Percy Jackson
the musical, I would love to be in the musical.
I don't know, we'll see. Maybe I'll write a theme song.
Who knows Hello, Rick Becky. Everybody at Disney, can I write.

Speaker 1 (11:46):
The theme song? I don't know what that was going
to be like with yours character and Percy Clarice and Percy,
I don't know what's going happen, So we'll they have
to wait and find out out. Let's find out what
Grover is up to. Really enjoyed catching up with Arian,

(12:07):
him Hadari and just about they look for Pan. What's
going on? What we have to look forward to is
staying away from the lotus flowers. Let's find out you
went looking for Pan season two. Yeah, you're staying away
from the lotus flowers.

Speaker 10 (12:25):
I'm trying, man, It's it's difficult when you're on the road.
I mean, I'm just hungry and drenched in mud and
rain all the time and sand. So I'm trying to
stay away from from that dangerous stuff. But I have
some I have some run ins with some pretty pretty
interesting foes. I guess you could see that.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
What are you looking forward fans to seeing how your
character has grown in season two? What do you want
us to really focus in on.

Speaker 10 (12:50):
Oh, that's a good question. I'm excited for people to
see Grover like on his own little bit. He's never
really been without this company, and he's always had some
sort of family, whether it be Percy or Thaalia and
Luke or you know, Annabeth Throughout He's never really been
on his own and he kind of has to fend
for himself a little bit more and step up to
the plate. So I'm excited for fans to see that.

Speaker 1 (13:12):
I'm looking forward to it and hopefully get season three four.

Speaker 2 (13:16):
Five Me too, man, that's the hope.

Speaker 1 (13:20):
So I guess we have to see what's going on
with Grover's character, finding pain, Lotus flowers, the Yeah, we'll
all be in suspense when it comes to that one
cliffhanger that really left everyone just sell shot was who
was behind the deception? Luke got a chance to chat

(13:43):
with Charlie Bushnell about his character Luke and what's kind
of going to be just his character arc in season
two and what are some things that are in store
your character. We know the Halfloods, they never want to
be like their godlike parents, but we see them having

(14:05):
the same kind of struggles with doing right and wrong
your character in season two, are we still going to
see kind of like that conflict of knowing which way
to go in your journey?

Speaker 9 (14:18):
Yes? Uh, you know, although although Luke definitely his full
steam ahead on on you know, his mission on bringing
back Chronos in the Golden Age, there definitely is still
a bit of an internal struggle there, and he you
can see that he definitely still has a lot of

(14:39):
love for particularly like Annabeth and and even Percy, and
I think he's still holding on to hope that they
will join his side, because I think he truly just
believes that what he's doing is the right thing, you know.
I think he's what he it's what's best for everyone.
And I guess his personal experience, like you know, nothing

(14:59):
is good has come from the gods, you know, And
so I think he's still holding onto that hope. But
as the season goes on, I you know, I think
he slowly starts to realize that it's not going to happen.
And you know, if they're not, if they're not going
to join him, I think he's going to get him
out of the way, you know. So yeah, it kind
of gets to that point.

Speaker 1 (15:20):
Now, talk about what it's like playing a flashback character.
How did you have to keep timeline straight in your
mind of younger Luke and older Luke.

Speaker 9 (15:31):
Yeah, Well, I mean for for flashback. Luke actually like
reading the Demigod Diaries. There's like a Luke's diary in
that book, which was really helpful and I pulled a
lot from that for younger Luke. But yeah, I really
I'm so happy that we got to do that this
season because I think it really I think it really

(15:55):
uh we get to see the history between between Luke
and Annabeth, and I think that really deepens their relationship
and I think the audience will get to understand their
dynamic more and I think it makes it, you know,
that much more tragic kind of where they're at now,
and you.

Speaker 1 (16:15):
Know, keeping like the timeline straight in your mind. Yeah,
and playing that character and it has to be challenging.

Speaker 9 (16:21):
Definitely, and especially like the way we kind of shot
this season, it was, you know, it's a bit all
over the place. Like one day we'd be shooting episode
five and the next day we'd be shooting episode seven,
next day we be shooting episode three. So we really
I think like the main the main thing for us
was just making sure we were constantly reading the scripts
over and over again and just so it's like ingrained

(16:45):
in our bodies and we know exactly what's going on
when Uh So, you know, that's more of like a
technical technical answer, but I think that was like very
helpful for all of us.

Speaker 1 (16:55):
Was just reading the scripts over and over again and
all right. I really enjoyed Charlie about Luke's character and
just what may be in store. I think he cann
be cutting up again, what y'alla think? I also had
an opportunity to talk to the creative team who brought
this next chapter to life, and John Steinberg, the executive producer,

(17:19):
really gave some good insight on this production and what
it all takes to make this happen. So, John, when
we look at this production putting all this together, we
see the finished product, we're like, oh my god, how
has technology played a role and making just some of

(17:40):
the scenes that we see, all the amazing effects and everything.
How has that played a role in what we're seeing now?
Because I grew up from Jason and Augernaut, so it
didn't look like that when I was younger, it.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
Did not, but you know what, it was still fun.

Speaker 11 (17:54):
I think that's the challenge, right, is to make sure
that we're telling a story that doesn't need all the
bells and whistles to make you care, but to bring
the the bells and whistles to bear when there is
a problem that that otherwise would stop a story in
his tracks. And I think, you know, the biggest, the
easiest to understand example of that this season is Tyson.

(18:16):
I think the idea of bringing a character into not
just into the show, but into a central relationship with
the with Percy, with with you know, with our main character,
and being able to cast an actor who would be
able to give her performance that would make you believe
that these two kids were forming that relationship when one
of them has one eye is a thing that I

(18:38):
don't know how you would have done ten years ago.
I don't know how you would have done two years ago.
And I think, you know, ILM being a partner on this,
I think it was it was weirdly encouraging to hear
them say we don't know how you would have done
it three years ago either, but we have some ideas
and there's some solutions I think that might work. And
then seeing the finished product. Just recently watching a Cyclops

(19:03):
come to life is pretty pretty amazing.

Speaker 1 (19:05):
One thing I really enjoy watching things on streaming is
that you can play around with timing. You can have
an episode that's thirty seven minutes forty five minutes and
talk about how that changed the game when it comes
to storytelling and making sure that you have, you know,
just the storyline that you want out there for.

Speaker 11 (19:24):
The I think there are probably ways that it's changed
a lot. When I started in TV, you had to
hit a timing to the second and there were scenes
that probably weren't the strongest scene in the episode, and
there were different ways you would have caught that episode
if you didn't have that kind of requirement. But at
the same time, I think if you're telling the right story,

(19:45):
the net result is probably in the same ballpark. It
is freeing editorially, I think to be able to feel like,
let's find the best version of this and we have
partners in Disney Plus who were going to put it
on the air, that there's no real requirement that it
do anything other than be great.

Speaker 1 (19:58):
I like to thank John for his insights and a
let's talk to executive producer Dan Schuttz and find out
his take on the series and what it meant to
have this season two. So Dan, you and the team
have to be just excited at the success of the
show and just where we're at today, getting ready to

(20:19):
drop season two in a few months.

Speaker 2 (20:21):
It's pretty nuts, I mean, because so much time and
work goes into getting these seasons ready, especially the scope
and the scale of the kind of thing that we're doing.
So it's amazing. And just get to work with this
cast and this group of people is I mean, it's awesome.

Speaker 1 (20:37):
One thing I love is the character arcs and then
the cast, I mean, phenomenal job in casting. And when
I look at like Cyclops being a part of season two,
in my mind, I'm like, that's the first disabled mythological character.
Thank you all for bringing them down to light.

Speaker 2 (20:52):
You know what, he's really the second one in the show.
Who is Hephaestus?

Speaker 1 (20:57):
That's true who?

Speaker 2 (20:58):
And we cast Hefestus in season one one. We cast
Tim Mominsen, who who had a stroke and he came
and played a Festus who is disabled god And it
was an unbelievable experience for him because he wasn't sure
he could act again, and we brought him into the
show and he did an incredible job in season one.
And Tyson, who has one eye, he We're just so

(21:20):
lucky that we got Daniel because it doesn't work if
you don't have that performance, like the heart that that
Daniel brings to it, the care, the really the youth,
like you know, he's he's an older guy, but he's
he brought this youth as a psyclops and and that's
what we needed out of the role. And he just

(21:42):
you know, when you're using that technology and putting creating,
putting it into one eye, it's like, if you don't
have that performance in there, it's never gonna work.

Speaker 11 (21:50):
Now.

Speaker 1 (21:51):
I had to get a chance to go over to
hall As because I was in transit and I miss
a lot of the great things that were in hall Ahs.
So if I missed something, just let me know and
do that. But when it comes to like the just
the story arc and what season two is going to
show us, what are you most excited for fans to see.

Speaker 2 (22:10):
There's so many different things, but mostly it's the it's
the relationships between these characters. Like I think when we
dive into these books, it's about evolving these you know,
taking what's in there, but evolving it, pushing it, you know,
finding the real meat of why these people are together
and and why you know, as their arcs go forward,

(22:31):
why they they're connected to one another. And I think
that's why people respond to these books like kids when
they read them, they feel seen in these books, whatever
they're going through, whatever's happening to them in their lives,
and this really is that. That is our responsibility to
try to push that as much as possible so that
they fall in love with these characters all over again

(22:51):
that they had loved from these books.

Speaker 1 (22:53):
What's been the biggest challenge putting autists together to this
masterpiece that we see.

Speaker 2 (22:59):
I would just say it's the scope and scale. Like
you set out to do something, and it's all about
hiring the right people who can achieve this and then
going for it. And Disney's been so supportive both financially
and with what they want this to be, so we've
been given the tools to really deliver this on a
really high end scale. And that's been the biggest challenge

(23:22):
because every season the books just get more complicated, the
scope and the set pieces get bigger, so it just
keeps challenging us every year.

Speaker 1 (23:32):
I don't know about you, but I really really enjoy
talking to the creative teams behind productions as you can
see how the sausage is made and just how things
we see at the finished product just comes life. So
we hope you enjoy our discussion with the cast of
Percy Jackson and the Olympians season two as well as

(23:55):
the creative team behind the scenes. And Don't Forget It
debuts December tenth on Disney Plus. So thank you all
so much for tuning into the entertainment zone. I am
Paul almade Slaine. We'll see you next time. Until then,
stay healthy, stay safe, and remember I love y'all of life.
Take it, folks.

Speaker 3 (24:21):
